No-cost energy efficient items, how do i access the no-cost items.
All you have to do is complete a Mass Save® Home Energy Assessment ! At your assessment, you receive eligible no-cost programmable thermostats, advanced power strips, faucet aerators, and water-saving showerheads. It’s that easy!
What is an advanced power strip?
A “phantom energy load” is a term used to describe the energy you lose when your electronics are plugged in or left on while you’re not using them (think about when you’re sleeping). Instead of unplugging all your devices around the house one by one, an advanced power strip makes it easy to reduce wasted energy with a switch of a button.
What is a programmable thermostat?
A programmable thermostat is a great way to save on your heating and cooling costs. You can adjust your temperature settings so that your home automatically adapts to your routine, saving energy and money while you’re at work or sleeping. You control the settings and you can adjust them when special circumstances come up like vacations, dinner parties, and more. No more remembering to turn the thermostat up and down!
What is a faucet aerator?
A faucet aerator helps you save energy and money in the kitchen and bathroom. It lowers a fixture’s water usage by about 4% using a mixture of air and water to create a more consistent stream. It’s a tiny, round device that is hardly noticeable and you can actually run the faucet for a longer period of time, while using less water.
What is an energy-efficient showerhead?
An energy-efficient showerhead helps save water and energy, without you having to do a thing in the shower! Due to its advanced technology, it uses less than 1.5 gallons of water per minute, all while providing you with the water pressure that you love.
Home Energy Assessments
What is a home energy assessment.
A Home Energy Assessment is a way for you to learn about how your home or building loses and consumes energy throughout the year. A Home Energy Specialist will come to your home, show you your savings opportunities, and address your energy efficiency concerns such as home discomfort or high energy costs. You’ll get a custom home energy report that details findings and recommendations and you also get access to Mass Save program benefits like HVAC rebates up to $2,750, 75%+ off insulation upgrades, 100% off air sealing, access to 0% financing for energy efficiency upgrades (up to $25K for 7 years), and no-cost items like programmable thermostats, advanced power strips, and water-saving devices.
How much does an assessment cost?
As a Mass Save partner, we always offer Home Energy Assessments at no cost. There is no additional cost for participating in the program because you help fund it through a charge on your monthly energy bill.
Who can sign up for an assessment?
Massachusetts residents who live in a single-family home or building with 4 or fewer units can sign up for an assessment with us. You can be a homeowner, renter, landlord, or building owner – you just need to have an active utility account with one of the Mass Save sponsors, like Eversource, National Grid, or Cape Light Compact. We cover the entire state so don’t worry about if your neighborhood is eligible. We can help you figure out if you’re qualified – just call us at (781) 305-3319.
I’ve already had a Home Energy Assessment before – do I still qualify?
If you have completed an assessment on your home in the last 3 years, you are not eligible to sign up for another assessment today . The good news is that y ou can still take advantage of the rebates and incentives through the Mass Save program, you just need to call us at (781) 305-3319 to move forward.
How long is an assessment?
An in-person assessment can last up to 3 hours and a virtual assessment can take up to 90 minutes. We’re always respectful of your time and will work efficiently so that you get the most thorough assessment without taking up too much of your time.
Are home energy assessments invasive?
We’ve seen many, many homes in our time, and we equip our Energy Specialists with tools to get around a large variety of challenging home obstacles. No worries if you are in the middle of moving, have kids, or your house is just a little messy. We’ll work around it. All you have to do is let us in, and we’ll take it from there.
Will an assessment help me save money?
The more energy you consume every month, the more you pay in energy costs. A Home Energy Assessment is designed to lower your energy usage, which means less money coming out of your wallet. The assessment is about long-term solutions that can help your entire household understand energy efficiency and create habits to live a greener life. While every home is different, our neighbors are often surprised at the difference s they see from making easy home energy efficiency upgrades.
How are you handling assessments during the pandemic?
The health and safety of our customers and employees is , and will always be, a top priority . We follow social distancing guidelines, limit our in-home time as much as we can, and wear personal protective equipment like masks. We are constantly monitoring the facts and we will continue to adjust as needed to keep everyone safe and healthy. If you are feeling unwell, we offer rescheduling options that are easy so that we can get you back on the schedule when you’re well. We also offer virtual Home Energy Assessments.
I can just DIY an assessment, right?
Our employees love a good DIY project, but we would not recommend taking this one on by yourself. If you choose the YouTube route, you won’t get access to the Mass Save rebates and incentives and you’ll miss out on the opinion s of trained energy efficiency experts. It is recommended by the Natural Resources Defense Council, the U.S. Department of Energy, and other s to get a professional for your assessment, instead of handling it on your own.
How experienced are the Home Energy Specialists?
HomeWorks Energy was founded in 2008 and we’ve been working nonstop since then to help Massachusetts residents save energy and money. We have performed almost 140,000 Home Energy Assessments and we’re proud to have grown to be the largest Home Performance Contractor in the state. The Home Energy Specialists at HomeWorks Energy are certified, trained, and experienced to give you a quality assessment of your home.
Do I get no-cost energy efficiency items with an assessment?
When you complete a Home Energy Assessment, virtually or in-person, you can get programmable thermostats, advanced power strips, faucet aerators, and water-saving showerheads at no cost. If you choose the virtual option, the items will be mailed to you after your completed assessment.
Am I required to make any upgrades after the assessment?
The assessment is a no obligation experience for all our neighbors. Your Home Energy Specialist will show you how you can save more energy and money year-round, give you a custom home energy report, and install your no-cost items. If you are ready to make any upgrades such as discounted insulation, we can schedule it on the spot. If not, there’s no rush – we will be here when you’re ready to take the next step toward additional savings.
If I’m a landlord, can I get an assessment on my building?
Of course ! W e work with many local landlords to make their buildings more efficient. If your building has 2-4 units, we can help you find increased incentives such as 100% off insulation. To access the rebates and incentives, all units mu st be assessed – we can do them all at once or separately if that works best for you . If your building has 5 or more units, click here for further information.
Can I sign up if I’m a renter?
Yes, renters are eligible to sign up for an assessment and access all of the no-cost items available. To get the full line of Mass Save rebates and incentives, we will need to work with your landlord to do a full building approach. We do this often, so we’re happy to facilitate any conversations – it can be as easy as sending us your landlord’s contact information and we can take it from there.
How do I schedule an assessment?
Call (781) 305-3319 to sign up over the phone or go here to schedule online. It’s easy and only takes a couple of minutes!
What if I can’t afford to make my home more efficient?
Mass Save® provides many incentives and rebates to make improvements more affordable. Our Moderate Income Incentive provides insulation installing and air sealing at no-cost for income-qualified customers. With each assessment, we’re also able to install no-cost saving measures such as low-flow showerheads, advanced power strips, and programmable thermostats. Even if nothing else, getting an assessment will still give you valuable information and improve your home’s energy efficiency.
Heating & Cooling Consultations
What is a heating & cooling consultation.
A Heating & Cooling Consultation is a no-cost, no obligation way to learn about your replacement options, whether you’re looking for a new boiler, furnace, air conditioner, or ductless system. We’ll listen to your concerns, take a look at your current system, and provide you with a custom quote that solves your home’s unique energy efficiency challenges.
How much time does a consultation take?
A Heating & Cooling Consultation typically takes about 90 minutes. We know that you have a busy schedule, so we move quickly and efficiently, but we also take pride in giving you the best quote and the most accurate information.
How much does a consultation cost?
At HomeWorks Energy, we never charge for a Heating & Cooling Consultation. There’s no catch and you are not required to move forward with any work unless you’re ready. We’re just happy to help our neighbors get the best information to make the most informed decision s about their home.
Do I have to get both heating and cooling quotes?
We are experienced with home heating and cooling systems, but we will just follow your lead and give you the quote that you need. We’re here to give you a quote for what you need now or next season.
What happens after the consultation?
Before we walk out the door, we will give you your custom quote and answer any questions you may have about the recommendations. Our company does it all so we can easily move forward with replacement right away or wait until you’re ready – no pressure!
Are there heating and cooling rebates available?
Great question! Because we are a Mass Save partner, we can help you access heating and cooling rebates up to $10,000 and 0% financing for system upgrades (up to $25K for 7 years).
Is a Home Energy Assessment the same thing as a Heating & Cooling Consultation?
No, an assessment and a consultation are different offerings . If you want to learn more about a Mass Save Home Energy Assessment, click here . If you have any questions about which no-cost offering you should schedule, call (781) 305-3319 and we can help you figure it out!
How do I sign up for a consultation?

What energy efficiency rebates and incentives are available.
Thanks to the sponsors of the Mass Save program, you can get no-cost items like programmable thermostats, 75%+ off insulation, 100% off air sealing, up to $10,000 in heat pump rebates, 0% financing for energy efficiency upgrades (HEAT Loan), and more.
You don’t even have to worry about that because we take care of all the rebate paperwork for you. It’s our goal to make the process as simple as possible for you!
Are the rebates just for Massachusetts residents?
Right now , eligibility only extends to homeowners, renters, building owners, and landlords living in or with properties in the state of Massachusetts, with a current electric account.
What can I use the 0% financing for?

If I’m a municipal electric customer, can I use the HEAT Loan?

Homework's is a fierce competitor in this new world of Mass Save home heating renovation and financing. Very professional. Very knowledgeable. Very punctual. Very thorough. They do the world themselves and their value for money is excellent.
We hired them to do annual maintenance on our combi-boiler. The boiler was working fine before the service, but since, it has been constantly throwing an error and shutting off. They came back multiple times to try to resolve the problem. During one service they created a gas leak, which then exploded the ignition. The system continues to throw errors and shut off. After multiple attempts, they finally agreed to refund what we had paid up front for a service contract and for the parts to repair the exploded ignition. This review is a fair and honest representation of our experience with this company, and is protected by the Consumer Review Fairness Act.

They insulated the 2nd floor and attic for the owner upstairs of a two unit condominium. I own the first floor. This company showed up on a Wednesday, didn't clean up afterwards, then came Thursday, didn't clean up afterwards. Then came Friday, left at 8 PM didn't clean up afterwards. There is insulation all over front and back porches, front and side yard. They left two gutters unhinged as well. They don't work on the weekends. I called to complain and to see if they can come back and clean up their mess and reconnect gutters. Nope. Maybe Monday then? Update: they came back the following Monday and cleaned up what I didn't do myself (front and side yard) however, they did not reattach the back gutter right so a handyman is coming today to fix it... I don't recommend this company.

I had HomeWorks quote a heat pump. They came and surveyed and quoted nearly $22,000. The quote was sent in a contract by email. I responded to the email that the quote was extremely high and that I was not interested. Every day for over a month now they send me the same contract asking for my signature. I've asked Russ the estimator twice to stop sending the contract. No response. I've also reached out to the office and I am still receiving contracts by email every day. Maybe I need to forward to the Attorney General's office?

Good Morning, Andy. We regret and apologize for the ongoing inconvenience these emails have caused you. There is an option within the email that you can access via the "more actions" button to decline the contract, which will put an end to those emails as they are otherwise generated automatically. Additionally, the automated system will discontinue those emails after 30 days. Again, we sincerely apologize and thank you for considering HomeWorks Energy. We hope you have a great day!
I recently had an energy audit , air sealing, and insulation work done by Homeworks Energy. The process was easy and the work was done to my satisfaction. I believe that a true measure of a company is how they handle things when things don't go as planned. In my case Homeworks handled my problem quickly and went above and beyond. They work with MASS SAVE and know their business inside and out. From the auditor, installation techs, customer service and more, they all were excellent. If you choose Homeworks Energy you won't be disappointed. A totally satisfied customer.
HomeWorks is exceptional. We had Ian come by and assess our house and he was easy to work with and very communicative. With a quick turnaround he was able schedule an appointment and everything was seamless. He also provided us with MassSave information so that we could do the work we would not normally be able to afford so quickly. We had insulation installed in our basement yesterday and it was a fantastic experience. A crew of 3 highly skilled professionals, very thorough and friendly. It's been less than 24 hours and I can already feel the difference of temperature in my house. And a bonus- I think they left my basement cleaner than it was! Superb professionals that I highly recommend! Certainly using them on all future projects.
Work was done professionally and timely but trying to reach customer service isn't easy
I recently had insulation installed by folks from HomeWorks. The installers were very skilled and very considerate. We love HomeWorks. They have always been very efficient and reasonable.
This is a sham. They make estimates so they can be reimbursed Ny mass save and then don't do the suggested work Theymake a mess, have hidden charges , don't come prepared with proper equipment and make promises they don't keep. Certainly not worth the back and for thing -- had to send out multiple appraisers and take forever to get back to you. Do NOT use this group. Terrible.

Hi Katherine, I'm sorry to hear you didn't have a great experience. This is certainly not the norm. I'd love to talk with you to better understand what happened and see if there is anything we can do to make this right. We will direct message you shortly. Thanks, Chris Nichols, COO
I want to take a minute to give Victor Moreno, Weily Tavarez, and Roberto Gomez the recognition they deserve. This crew did an amazing job insulating my house. A special shout out to Victor, who went above and beyond to make sure the job was finished that day and everything was cleaned up, leaving no mess behind. Victor did a great job communicating with me and answered all my questions. He didn't seem taken back at all and didn't make me feel like I was a bother. Well done gentleman, well done!

Hi Tammie, Really appreciate the positive review, we'll definitely post this one team wide! Our installs have really difficult jobs, and I love seeing them get shouted out! And you're right, we're very lucky to have Victor, Weily, and Roberto! Thanks, Chris Nichols, COO

Jerod Mayo Brings New Energy to Patriots Schedule Release Video
The Patriots' latest schedule release video signifies a notable shift in the team's atmosphere since Jerod Mayo took over as head coach, highlighting increased player engagement and a more fun environment. Featuring high-profile former players like Rob Gronkowski and Ernie Adams, the video marks their surprising return, indicating improving relationships and a positive cultural shift within the organization.
- Gronkowski’s return featured prominently in the video, his first major re-engagement with the team since his 2018 retirement and stint with the Buccaneers.
- Ernie Adams, a close friend of fired coach Bill Belichick, also made a rare appearance, suggesting a shift in dynamics within the Patriots' circle.
- The atmosphere at Gillette Stadium is reportedly more relaxed and fun under Mayo's leadership.
- Numerous former players are now frequently seen around the facilities, some even joining the staff.
Continued appearances and engagements from former players and staff could further solidify Mayo’s positive influence, setting a precedent for a new, more inclusive era in New England . Watching how Mayo's leadership style impacts the team's performance and culture will be crucial in the coming seasons.
Jerod Mayo's tenure marks a refreshing change for the Patriots, fostering a more vibrant and inclusive team environment that could lead to strong organizational cohesion and potentially impressive on-field results.

- power outage
Most power customers to be restored by early next week, but hardest-hit may take longer: CenterPoint
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Harris County customers without power fell below 550,000 on Friday evening, more than 24 hours after severe thunderstorms with hurricane-force winds barreled through southeast Texas.
As of 10 p.m. Friday, the live outage aggregation site PowerOutage.us showed 520,474 Harris County customers without electricity, a 40,000-customer reduction from three hours prior.
While CenterPoint Energy's customers are part of the total, the storms affected the utility's operations. The winds that topped 85 mph caused significant damage to the company's transmission and distribution electric system, including in Bellaire, Cypress, Baytown, Greenspoint, Humble, and Spring Branch.
In a statement late Friday, the utility said more than 78% of its customers, or 2.2 million, have power. Representatives added that mobile generation resources will enable temporary power restoration to certain areas of its service territory, including critical facilities.
In addition, CPE said 920,000 customer outages were counted at its peak, and that crews restored more than 340,000 customers' power in about 24 hours.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said it could take weeks to restore power. But later Friday, CenterPoint officials told ABC13 it'll take days, not weeks.
CPE requested approximately 4,000 line workers and 1,000 vegetation professionals to help.
The strength of the winds couldn't be overstated.
Some Houston residents told ABC News correspondent Mireya Villarreal that the winds sounded like a freight train coming through.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire drew a comparison to 2008's Hurricane Ike.
Outages span all over: from downtown Houston to Spring Branch, the east side, including Channelview and Baytown, north around the Cypress area, and west, including Katy.
According to CenterPoint Energy, the hardest-hit area was likely over the Highway 290 Corridor from Jersey Village to Waller.
"In the hardest hit areas, it is possible that customers are out through the weekend and into early next week," Alyssia Oshodi, CenterPoint Energy's director of communications, explained.
ABC13 asked which areas may have to wait longer for power.
"As specific as I can get, we know some of the hardest hit areas were up north, the Cypress area," Oshodi said.
Officials said most of the damage is expected to have been caused by straight-line winds.
Customers were encouraged to check their weatherhead, where power enters the home through an electric service drop, which is often a pipe on the side of the residence or building. If that's damaged, customers must contact a qualified electrician to make repairs before CenterPoint can restore service.
You can keep up with outages and plug in an address using CenterPoint Energy's outage tracker .
The utility said customers should always avoid downed power lines and damaged electric utility equipment.
Elsewhere, Entergy, serving areas north and east of Houston, reported 6,200 customers without power by 5:30 p.m. Friday. The utility's peak outage was at 8 p.m. Thursday when 44,500 customers had no power.
You should treat all down and damaged equipment as energized and report them to the company at 713-207-2222.
Whitmire warned that the outages also affect traffic lights. CenterPoint officials did not provide details Friday night on when the streetlights would be fixed. Power poles are down, and some are snapped in half.
The power outages are also affecting connectivity.
Comcast said it has opened all operational Xfinity WiFi hotspots in the Houston area, free of charge, to all residents.
AT &T said that some of its customers may also be experiencing wireless and wireline service interruptions due to the outages. Anyone experiencing issues can call 800-288-2020.
Verizon said its customers are having similar experiences.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Struggling on Front Lines, Ukraine Strikes Harder at Russian Energy
A huge drone attack targeted southwestern Russia and the Russian-occupied peninsula of Crimea, hitting oil facilities and a substation, leading to rolling blackouts.

By Constant Méheut and Andrés R. Martínez
Constant Méheut reported from Kyiv, Ukraine, and Andrés R. Martínez from Seoul.
Struggling to contain Russian advances on the battlefield, Ukraine is increasingly taking the fight to Russia beyond the front lines in an effort to disrupt its military operations and put pressure on its economy — targeting airfields, logistics hubs and critical energy facilities with missiles and drones.
That strategy was on full display early on Friday when a series of explosions struck fuel depots, oil facilities and a power station in southwestern Russia and Crimea, the Russian-occupied Ukrainian peninsula. Just a day before, Ukrainian missiles hit an airfield in Crimea, destroying at least three jets.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had shot down more than 100 Ukrainian drones on Friday, a figure that would represent one of Ukraine’s largest air assaults against Russia in months. A Ukrainian security official said Ukraine was behind the attack.
Although the full extent of the damage was unclear, the Russian authorities reported that an electricity substation was hit in the Crimean city of Sevastopol, leading to rolling blackouts.
Just 70 miles east of Crimea, on Russia’s Black Sea coast, fires broke out at several oil facilities, including in the port of Novorossiysk, which operates an important oil terminal.
Crimea, which Russia illegally seized a decade ago, and nearby Russian Black Sea ports have long been a prime target for the Ukrainian military.
Attacks there have three main objectives: reducing Russia’s capacity to use Crimea as a launchpad for missile and drone attacks; disrupting supply lines that funnel fuel and ammunition to the battlefield; and degrading the Russian fleet docked in the region to ease the pressure on Ukrainian operations in the Black Sea, such as exporting grain .
Ukraine has increasingly been striking Russian oil facilities in what military analysts say is an attempt to complicate the Russian military’s logistics by hitting facilities that supply fuel for its tanks, ships and planes.
Ukrainian officials also hope the strikes can undermine the Russian energy complex, which is at the core of the country’s economy and war effort — accounting for about a third of Russia’s federal budget revenue — although they do not appear to have had any serious effect yet .
The attack on Novorossiysk could mark an escalation in the Ukrainian strategy.
While Kyiv had previously attacked warships in Novorossiysk, the assault on Friday was the first time it had targeted the oil facilities there, said Damien Ernst, an energy expert at the University of Liège, Belgium.
Novorossiysk is a major Russian port for oil exports, with about 1.5 million barrels of Russian oil passing through each day, Mr. Ernst said. It’s also the terminal for one of the world’s largest pipelines, which exports most of Kazakhstan’s oil, or about 1.3 million barrels a day.
Verified footage of the attack showed a large explosion above the city’s oil terminal, although it was unclear whether the attack caused any serious damage to the terminal.
But it may raise further concerns in the United States, where the Biden administration has urged Kyiv to stop attacking Russian oil refineries out of concern about global oil markets .
In addition, American oil companies have a stake in the terminal. Chevron, for instance, is a significant shareholder in the pipeline transporting oil from Kazakhstan. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Ukrainian attacks on Crimea, an important logistical and military hub for the Russian Army, have been more frequent.
Mikhail Razvozhaev, the Russian-backed governor of the Crimean city of Sevastopol, home to about half a million people, said on Telegram that schools had been closed across the city as a result of the attack. He added that repairs to the substation that had been hit would take about a day and that the resulting power shortages would force the authorities to introduce rolling blackouts.
It was the third attack in two days against Sevastopol. A day before, the local authorities reported Ukrainian missile attacks on the Belbek military airfield outside the city. Satellite images verified by The New York Times showed that three Russian jets had been destroyed and another had been damaged.
Ukrainian officials have long maintained that targeting Russian assets and operations in Crimea is critical to their war effort. It “is extremely important for us, because it’s the way for us to reduce the number of attacks from that region,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this year .
That objective appears be even more important now that Ukrainian troops are losing ground on the battlefield.
Russia last week launched a new offensive in the northeast, quickly capturing several settlements in the Kharkiv region and forcing Kyiv to rush troops to the area.
Mr. Zelensky told Ukrainian journalists on Friday that Russian troops had advanced up to six miles from the Russian border into Ukrainian territory, but had not reached the stronger defensive lines in the region. He added that the situation in the area had stabilized.
Ukrainian officials and military analysts say Russia’s offensive in the northeast is meant to further stretch Ukraine’s already thinned-out forces. Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukraine’s top commander, said Russian forces had extended the front line by about 45 miles.
President Vladimir V. Putin has suggested that the goal of the offensive is for Russia to push Ukrainian forces back from the border to prevent them from shelling Russian villages and cities.
Speaking to reporters during a trip to China on Friday, he said Ukraine’s regular shelling of Russian border areas, including the city of Belgorod, had forced the Russian Army to “create a buffer zone” in the Kharkiv region to protect civilians.
While Ukrainian drones can fly to distant Russian targets, such as oil facilities, artillery shells have a range only of several miles. But unlike drones, shells cannot be intercepted and they have been widely used in the war to pin down troops and constrain military operations.
Mr. Putin added that his forces had no plans to take the city of Kharkiv itself. Most independent military analysts consider this claim credible, saying that Russia does not have nearly enough forces in northern Ukraine to threaten the city, Ukraine’s second largest.
But analysts add that Russian forces could push within artillery range of the city and pound it, creating chaos and panic. More than 8,000 Ukrainian civilians have already been evacuated from settlements and villages north of Kharkiv, according to the local authorities.
Bogdan Yahno, head of the Kharkiv region for the Relief Coordination Center , a nonprofit group helping people to evacuate, said shelling had intensified on Kharkiv and its outskirts in recent days. “The fight is getting closer,” he said.
Anatoly Kurmanaev and Maria Varenikova contributed reporting.

Energizing the game-changers: how to grow the renewable energy workforce.

George Sakellaris is the founder, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of Ameresco.
Driven by the need to decarbonize and increase efficiencies, as well as the Inflation Reduction Act and other policies, the renewable energy industry has grown exponentially in the last few years. This is a success story that is worth applauding. The trick, now that we have gained so much speed in such a short period of time, is to sustain the momentum.
One of the obstacles that could force a significant slowdown is the workforce itself. It cannot be overstated that filling the talent and skill gaps across several industries is key to enabling the future we envision for our children and grandchildren. However, I would argue that performing training and upskilling and providing the education and experience necessary to develop the next-generation workforce is nowhere more vital than in the renewable energy industry.
Renewable Energy To Triple By 2032
This need is seemingly everywhere we look in our warming world with last summer’s massive wildfires in Canada and Hawaii, 100-year storms soon projected to arrive nearly once a decade, and the effects of sea-level rise becoming all too real in often flooded coastal communities. These are just a few stark reminders of the urgency to transition to clean energy sources and embrace sustainable practices.
However, my sense of urgency and passion to find talented, capable people who can implement practical solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions stems not only from the impact of the climate crisis but also from the projections of renewable energy’s rapid ascent. Morningstar is forecasting that renewables will more than triple by 2032, at which point they will be responsible for 45% of the total energy generation mix in the United States. It’s an exciting prospect, but it will also require people at all levels of the workforce and throughout the supply chain to be able to support it.
The Best Self Cleaning Litter Boxes Tested For Months
Aurora alert: why you now need to pack a bag for sudden solar storms, leak reveals an etf perfect storm could be heading toward bitcoin after 6 trillion fed inflation flip unleashed a crypto price boom, shining a light on solar.
Solar energy is also expected to be one of the fastest-growing renewable energy technologies over the next decade. That growth has already begun as nearly half of all the solar capacity currently on the grid has been installed in just the last three years. Much like the clean energy industry as a whole, the need for workers in solar is also vast. According to the Department of Energy , the solar industry needs to grow from 330,000 workers now to 1.5 million workers by 2035 for the U.S. to achieve its decarbonization goals.
Let’s break down those numbers a bit using my home state as an example. By 2030, more than 38,000 workers in Massachusetts must be trained and ready to deploy some or all of their time on climate-critical work.
Thinking Globally, Acting Locally
"Think globally, act locally" has been a mantra of the environmental movement for decades, and with good reason. Like the concentric circles emanating from a pebble thrown into a pond, we can often make a big impact on the world around us by taking action in the surrounding communities in which we live and work.
As business leaders, one step we can take to further support these actions is to hire locally whenever possible. Whether a project is being developed in Hawaii or Halifax, hiring local subcontractors and training new hires can help create job opportunities for the local workforce and businesses.
In my experience, I have found cultivating strategic engagement with regional subcontractor networks is one way to ensure your local hiring efforts are effective and support the renewable energy ecosystem during your specific project and beyond. By leveraging the specialized knowledge and customer relationships that these subcontractors possess, you can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of your project and contribute to the creation of success stories that underscore the positive impact of local hiring on the industry as a whole.
My company, Ameresco, for example, has taken this approach by locally assembling components for a street light improvement project with the city of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Energy Authority. By tapping into the city’s workforce and resources, we can better foster a community-centric approach.
Additionally, we can strengthen the talent pipeline by investing time and resources to partner with higher education institutions on cooperative education, internship and mentorship programs. By collaborating with colleges and universities, this approach can lead to successes that not only help students currently participating in the programs but also inspire more students to stay and work locally to strengthen the community’s economic base.
These co-op and internship programs can have a significant impact on the renewable energy sector, ensuring that the people involved have a personal stake in the success of a given project, leading to potentially higher quality work and creating a space for creativity and innovation. This symbiotic relationship between a business and local higher education institutions exemplifies how businesses can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of both education and industry.
Creating The Next Generation Of Game-Changers
The up-and-coming generation of young people will be key to reaching our net-zero goals. We have recently seen action on this front at the federal level. In September of 2023, the White House announced the American Climate Corps , an initiative to train young people for jobs in the clean energy economy.
The private sector also has a role to play in bringing the younger generation into the renewable energy workforce. While internships and cooperative education are not new concepts, they can still be highly effective. Bringing a co-op student into a company allows the student to explore or refine their career path, gain the knowledge and experience needed for their chosen industry and role, and make the connections necessary to begin to develop a professional network.
When I founded Ameresco, energy efficiency was first dismissed as a pipe dream by potential clients and financiers. Yet, we built a thriving business after implementing our solutions and showcasing their undeniable impact. The industry has quickly blossomed alongside us, paving the way to a revolutionary moment for energy and how we consume it throughout our daily lives. Now, it is a pivotal moment for all of us to embrace and train the next generation of game-changers to take the energy industry on its critical big leap.

Energy minister travels to Italy as Whyalla steelworks owners flag further delays
South Australia's energy minister has travelled to Italy to "eyeball" the firm tasked with developing a $500 million furnace for the Whyalla steelworks as pressure mounts on the global metals empire of the plant's owner Sanjeev Gupta.
Mr Gupta's company GFG Alliance signed a deal in April last year with equipment maker Danieli for a new electric arc furnace for its Upper Spencer Gulf facility .
Tom Koutsantonis is in Europe seeking an update on the project directly from the manufacturer, which is based in Italy's north-east.
"I want to eyeball Danieli," he told ABC News.
"I want to know where it's up to, how far away is it, where are we with integration, engineering and design."
The state and federal governments have committed more than $110 million to the project.
It is a crucial part of Mr Gupta's plans to decarbonise his Whyalla steel-making operations by 2030.
Danieli has told ABC News the contract with the Whyalla steelworks is in place and engineering work is proceeding.
But the Italian manufacturer is building more than one electric arc furnace for GFG, and the other one is facing major challenges.
Danieli has "suspended" the contract to build a similar furnace for GFG's steel plant in the Czechia, Liberty Ostrava, amid a dispute over an unpaid power bill.
The plant's energy supplier, Tameh Czech, cut electricity to the facility last December, accusing Liberty Ostrava of missing payments since June.
Tameh Czech has told the ABC Liberty owes it $130 million.
Liberty has proposed a restructuring plan, which it said had the support of 90 per cent of its creditors.
Tameh Czech "disagrees with the plan" and said the "correct and logical step, which corresponds to Liberty Ostrava's current financial situation, is its insolvency".
GFG companies under investigation in UK
The problems in Czechia are not the only business concerns Mr Gupta has in the region.
GFG Alliance owes around $889 million to the administrators of the collapsed supply chain finance firm Greensill Capital.
In March, the administrators revealed GFG had not made repayments in three years, and warned it may consider "recovery options" if a restructuring plan could not be agreed to and implemented.
A spokesperson for GFG said the company had signed a new framework agreement with its major Greensill creditors.
The company insists its Australian businesses are not exposed to any Greensill-related debt.
Some of GFG's companies in the UK also remain under investigation by Britain's Serious Fraud Office (SFO) for "… suspected fraud, fraudulent trading and money laundering within the GFG Alliance, which includes examining its financial agreements with Greensill Capital," an SFO spokesperson said.
GFG has "consistently rejected any wrongdoing" and pledged to "cooperate fully" with the investigation.
Back in Whyalla, the existing blast furnace at the steelworks has been offline since mid-March, with repair works set back again last week when a "break out" occurred, cracking part of the outer shell.
Premier Peter Malinauskas told parliament this week the state government now expects operations to resume by July.
"The last couple of months have probably been the most challenging for the team in Whyalla," Mr Gupta said at the World Hydrogen Summit in the Netherlands this week.
"I'm very confident the blast furnace will be back; we need it for our transition [to green steel]."
"Of course, our future is the DRI (direct reduction plant) project, but that will take us three years to complete and during this time we need our blast furnace running and serving our needs," he said.
Transition to green steel now expected in 2027
The DRI project is another part of Mr Gupta's plan to phase out coal-based steelmaking at Whyalla.
The plant will process magnetite iron ore that can then be fed into the electric arc furnace.
In recent days, GFG Alliance received positive results from testing of Whyalla magnetite in direct reduction iron plants in Canada and Egypt.
"Both of them yielded the best results the industry has seen so far," Mr Gupta said, "proving that Whyalla's magnetite really is the best in the world".
Until this week the "transition" to green steel was planned for 2025, but GFG now expects the shift to happen in 2027.
The company also wants to use hydrogen to help power the electric furnace and DRI plant, which would be sourced from a large-scale plant the state government is building outside of Whyalla.
"We're doing it there for a reason," Mr Koutsantonis said.
"It's alongside magnetite resources and it's alongside a steelworks, and we want to decarbonise steel.
"The first one to decarbonise steel — it's a path to prosperity.
"We're not ready to transition to an electric arc furnace, this blast furnace needs to survive, and the government's entire strategy in Whyalla has always been about keeping that blast furnace hot," he said.
There are also hundreds of jobs that rely on the steelworks operating.
Many of the 1,100-strong workforce at the Whyalla plant are on about 30 per cent less pay while the furnace remains offline.
GFG Alliance has said employment arrangements would return to normal once the steelworks is operating as usual again.
