How to Start a Backyard Herb Business in a Month

First of all, you need a place for the plants to grow. You can build a mini-greenhouse/raised bed for under $300. It’s important to have access to the mini-greenhouse/raised bed from all sides and that it has plenty of sunlight, so don’t locate it next to a tree or other shaded area. A 40 inch wide by 30 foot long raised bed/mini-greenhouse is a good size. That’ll give you room for about 400 potted plants (it’s recommended you use six-inch pots – a bigger size will produce a bigger plant).

Next you’ll need a good mixture of potting soil. This mixture, used by many professional herb growers, should do the trick:

8 cubic feet topsoil.

8 cubic feet washed sand

4 cubic feet perlite

12 cubic feet peat moss

10 pounds dolomite lime

10 pounds dry organic fertilizer

After you’ve decided what herbs you’d like to grow, you can buy herb seeds online from places such as Johnny’s Seeds and Richter’s. Be sure to focus on the most popular culinary and medicinal herbs to boost your sales.

Now you’re ready to begin growing! Soon those profits will be growing too. Many of your seeds will germinate within a week or two. Take good care of them. Only use organic fertilizers. These will help your herbs with a low-stress growth rate. Also, every week during the growing season, apply a liquid seaweed or liquid fish emulsion as a foliar spray. This will provide healthy nutrients.

It’s also important not to over water your plants. Generally water them just once a day in the morning. Also be mindful of which herbs can still grow in cold weather and which ones might need to be started indoors.

When your herbs are grown, you’re ready to start selling them. Based on your local laws, maybe you can sell them right out of your own garden. Or perhaps you can set up a roadside stand. A charity fundraiser can be a great place to sell potted herbs and people are often willing to pay more for them if they know some of the profits are going to a good cause. One grower in our area sells her herbs at 6 charity fundraisers every summer, and grossed over $32,000 at those six. She donates 25% to the charity. Win-win! The farmer’s market is another great place to get customers. The larger 6″ potted herbs seem to do better at farmer’s markets than the smaller 3 & 4 inch sizes, as folks are in a spending mood, and like buying a plant that’s almost ready to harvest.

Make up flyers and put them up on local bulletin boards. Or consider having business cards printed. One successful grower puts a recipe on the back and found that customers are less likely to throw them out. Whatever you do, add your personal, creative touch, and you’ll find the customers will keep coming back.

Good condition and good fertility of soil is a very important factor for herbal farming. The soil must have to be well drained and free from water logging.

Prepare the land in such a way so that it crumbles easily. Because of this, the roots will be able to get sufficient water without rotting the roots and the same time strengthening them.

Some herbs can also be grown via vegetative means, such as rooting cuttings, division of the plant, bulbs or tissue culture. Rooting cuttings works best with soft stemmed herbs such as mint, lemon balm, basil and stevia.

How and when the herb is harvested is critical for a high-quality product. For example, basil should be harvested in the cool of the day, handled very gently, and packed in coolers immediately after cutting. If you are creative and organized, there should be little waste. For example, if you have an overabundance of fresh basil, make pesto and freeze it. As with any crop, it is important to establish markets before the crop is planted. The most successful growers in North Carolina have been the ones who have been creative with their marketing strategies. For example, for restaurant sales feature an “‘herb of the week” and provide some free herb and recipes for chefs.

Another herb crop of interest in North Carolina is garlic, particularly elephant garlic. No matter how you sell your herbs, it is important to educate the customer. Most people are fascinated with herbs, but they know little about them. The more they know how to use herbs, the more they buy. One way to handle this is to provide recipe cards with your herbs. If you are selling herb plants from your farm, display gardens will help make sales. Offer tours of the gardens. Describe the plants, how to grow them, how to landscape with them, and how to use them. Provide plans for the display gardens along with a list of plants needed, and have plenty of those plants for sale. Herb fairs and festivals have also proved to be excellent promotional tools and big sales events in North Carolina. During these events, demonstrations and talks are offered on a variety of topics such as how to make pesto, how to use Chinese herbs, and how to make a tussie mussie.

People are hungry for herbs and herb products and we haven’t even begun to reach the full potential of what can be offered, from plants, to teas, to wreaths, to soaps, etc. You are only limited by your imagination and your abilities to manage a diverse operation and effectively sell your products. The keys are to take advantage of the many opportunities to market; direct sales, wholesale, mail-order, and craft shows. Successful marketing of herb plants at farmers' markets, farm stands, or retail nurseries starts with high-quality, healthy plants and benefits from an attractive, informative presentation. If you want a favorable return on your investment, you should visualize your marketing plan before you plant seeds or start cuttings, because your greenhouse production should be tailored to your final presentation.

The first thing to consider is how you are going to transport and display your herb plants. That will determine the size and type of containers you will use, which will determine the prices you can charge. With that decision made, you will know how to schedule your plantings to have the right size plants for the price points you want. In other words, marketing and production are so closely interrelated that they should be planned simultaneously.

Here are some addtional ideas and tips to consider as you plan your herb plant sales:

  • Press-fit trays, which hold the pots securely in the tray, are a good choice for plants that are going to be transported to and from market several times. Another benefit of these trays is that when a customer removes one pot, the others won't fall over. Press-fit trays and the pots that fit into them are available in several sizes, square or round.
  • Are organic products big in your market? You might want to offer organically-grown herbs in the OMRI-approved, biodegradable Fertilpots . These fiber pots are available in round, square, or strip pots in a range of different sizes.
  • Whether biodegradable or plastic , pots can get bigger as the season unfolds, with sales of the smallest pots high in early spring for veteran gardeners and 4" pots a month or so later, when less-experienced gardeners decide to buy herbs. They are more likely to achieve success with a larger plant, and therefore more likely to buy again from you next year.
  • Try mixing up culinary herbs in a six-pack. It's a good way to introduce your customers to the many interesting kinds of basil , sage , or thyme . Or, put together other compatible herbs such as Italian parsley and basil; chives and garlic chives ; rosemary and thyme.
  • Don't display your flats of herbs on the ground, where they may not be noticed; put them right at waist level (or up to eye level), where customers can see, touch, and smell them. Fragrance is a strong selling point for herbs.
  • Provide variety information and cultural hints, either with purchased plant tags or handmade tags. Create more detailed planting instructions on cardstock or paper to offer customers along with their purchases.
  • Make prices sensible and easy to understand. Separate plants according to their price points. You know you need to get more money for the slow-growing, hard-to-propagate herbs like rosemary, lavender , or lemon verbena than you do for easy annuals like basil. Since customers don't necessarily understand the distinction, use different pots or at least different locations for the higher-priced herbs. And if you offer the same herb in more than one size, make sure the higher-priced plants are noticeably larger than the smaller ones.
  • Don't try to sell herbs that have become seriously rootbound in small pots. Instead, try moving them up into gallon pots or making mixed-herb containers in larger, decorative pots. Herb sales can continue across seasons — if you keep the plants looking healthy.
  • Provide recipes for culinary herbs, or note key attributes on the price signs. A flat of Genovese Basil , for example, could have a sign that says Makes the best pesto! and the oregano sign could say True Greek Oregano — Known for its aromatic & flavorful leaves . Let customers know why your herbs are special.
  • Finally, inform customers what, where, and when you can provide them with your herb products. Time spent reaching out to communicate your offerings and knowledge via a blog, website, email, or social media can pay off by building brand recognition and community.
