Two streams. Real world learning. Accelerated master’s admission. Empowering undergraduate students to positively impact urban life in their careers.

It is with great excitement that Simon Fraser University launches a new Bachelor of Arts in Urban Worlds this fall. A collaborative degree between the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Environment, the new major addresses the growing need to tackle the world’s urban issues and improve upon its possibilities.

With over half the world’s population living in urban spaces, cities matter. They produce, reflect, and amplify most of the dynamics, potential, and problems of global society. With planetary pressures like population growth and climate change, urban spaces need to be more resilient and sustainable for society to thrive in a turbulent world. SFU’s new major in Urban Worlds tackles these topics and turns them into opportunities for students to gain the knowledge and skills they need to effectively shape cities and urban life for a better future.

“Our world is urban. Wherever we live, cities shape our lives,” says SFU Geography professor, Nicholas Blomley. “Cities are centres of culture, political decision-making, innovation and creativity. Cities reveal and intensify human problems such as racism, climate change, and inequity. The Urban Worlds major grounds students in the dynamism and diversity of the city.”

Directly addressing SFU’s priority to engage in global challenges and vision to advance an inclusive and sustainable future, urban-minded SFU undergraduate students can now put their passion for making positive change in our cities towards a degree. Two stream options allow students to curate their studies to match their interests. Additionally, students can choose accelerated Master’s admission to take their studies to the graduate level.

B.C. Ministry of Education approval was awarded thanks to the collaborative effort of Geography professor, Nicholas Blomley, and Urban Studies professor, Anthony Perl. A true collaboration at every level, Urban Worlds exists as a degree option from the Department of Geography (Faculty of Environment) and Urban Studies Program (Faculty of Arts and Social Science).

Urban Worlds students take their foundation year courses together, then choose a stream in Urban Change (through FENV) or Urban Studies (through FASS) for years two and three. The streams allow students to focus on their areas of interest in this excitingly complex and layered area of study. All Urban Worlds students reconnect for fourth-year capstone projects, and they graduate together with a degree that will create opportunities for graduate studies as well as jobs and career pathways.

Urban Worlds students’ career opportunities include (but are not limited to) urban and land-use planners; senior managers in government, construction, transportation, production utilities; senior government managers and officials; economic development; sustainability; business development officers; market researchers and analysts; and emergency management.

The major’s course load cleverly combines existing courses with new courses like URB 101: What is a city? This class is being offered for the first time in fall 2024. Check out what instructor Mei Lang has to say about URB 101.

Urban Worlds’ diverse course offerings help to make this degree unique. An exciting range of studies, including courses about Indigenous peoples, international studies, and sustainability, are offered alongside courses in quantitative geography, statistics, life sciences, data ethics, and social research, coalesce into this exciting new major. The total course offering spans 23 of SFU’s programs from five faculties. Urban Worlds connects the SFU academic community in an ambitious new way, taking interdisciplinary teaching and learning to new levels. It is no exaggeration to say that Urban Worlds is a shining example of SFU’s commitment to collaborative teaching and innovative learning.

Peter Hall, SFU’s Vice-Provost and Associate VP Academic, says, “SFU researchers are at the leading edge of global research on the urban condition; from urban economies to social inclusion, from sustainable communities to literature, from urban policy to housing. The Urban Worlds major provides undergraduate students an opportunity to engage with this expertise while learning and living in one of the world’s most interesting urban spaces."

Offering an immersive, experiential, and interdisciplinary learning approach, Urban Worlds reveals where, why, and how fundamental socio-spatial processes, such as gentrification, homelessness, and migration inform the challenges of urban development in various contexts around the world. Students will learn how urban change influences social change and how to shape cities and urban life for the better.

This knowledge provides students with the highly employable skills that are required in occupations needed to support the social and socioeconomic fabric of cities, 21st-century urban change, and its accompanying challenges.

Employability is a focus of this program both inside and outside of the classroom. The major’s fourth-year studies focus on real world learning, as students apply what they’ve learned through partnerships with the City of Vancouver’s City Studio (in GEOG 461) and the City of New Westminster (in URB 499). Additionally, practicum options are made available to all students.

Also, Urban Worlds students are eligible for accelerated admission to SFU Master’s programs in Geography or Urban Studies.

"Urbanization is growing faster than our understanding of how to improve cities,” says SFU Urban Studies professor, Anthony Perl. “The know-how and know-why that students acquire from SFU's major in Urban Worlds will enable them to manage the disruptions and minimize the inequities that arise from urbanization, advance the common good, and deliver on government commitments to make cities better for all."

This ambitious new major moves SFU’s What’s Next journey forward: provincially, nationally, and internationally. From climate change and migration to racism, gentrification, homelessness, and housing crises, professors in Urban Worlds courses invite students to explore global urbanization, tackle urban challenges, and create sustainable solutions. Students will learn effective ways to work with people and organizations to develop equitable, inclusive, and healthy communities. Urban Worlds invites students to strengthen their commitments to reconciliation, equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice. Graduates of the Urban Worlds major will make a difference for B.C. by expanding education and credential models, accelerating impact and innovation.

A launch event is being planned for Thursday, Oct. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Metro Vancouver in Burnaby during the UN-recognized Urban October . Please stay tuned for more information.

In the meantime, we invite you to share this information about SFU’s new major in Urban Worlds with your faculty and staff colleagues, as the major’s success will depend on a continued institutional commitment to collaboration. Let us ensure that students are aware of this new degree option, and of the exciting range of courses being offered this fall and in coming semesters.

The Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education Announce Partnership with Joint Venture of Canadian Postsecondary Institutions to Establish the Canadian Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement

View French language release

For nearly two decades, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Community Engagement Classification has recognized postsecondary institutions in the United States for demonstrating their commitment to their broader communities through engaged learning, research, and partnership practice. Now, a new initiative will bring the classification to a group of Canadian institutions.

The U.S.-based classification has been the leading framework for postsecondary institutional assessment and recognition of community engagement in the United States. Postsecondary institutions and campuses that choose to invest in the classification process find it to be one of rigor, designed to recognize high-quality, equitable community engagement that is deeply rooted and pervasive across the institution.

The framework, after being contextualized for Canada over a four-year pilot process that purposely centered the values of reciprocity, reconciliation, accountability, collaboration, courage, and equity, diversity and inclusion, will now be implemented in Canada.

“We are thrilled to announce our collaboration to bring the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement to institutions of higher education across Canada,” said Timothy Knowles, president of the Carnegie Foundation. “This endeavor will recognize and elevate Canadian colleges and universities that are dedicated to high-quality, community engagement, integrated into scholarship, teaching and service.”

“ACE is excited to welcome Canada as the newest country to adopt the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, joining Australia and the United States,” said Ted Mitchell, president of the American Council on Education (ACE). “The significant amount of work that went into the development of this classification underscores the importance of community engagement in Canadian higher education. The partnership provides an opportunity for learning and sharing about community engagement in a global context.”

McMaster University, Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, Simon Fraser University and the Université de Montréal are the signers of the joint venture agreement to serve as inaugural hosts for the Canadian Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. In the near term, the work of this Joint Venture of Canadian Postsecondary Institutions and its management team will be as follows:

  • To establish a distributed administrative and research home to support Canadian operations;
  • To establish a Canadian Carnegie steering committee to provide strategic and policy guidance to operations;
  • To launch a first cycle of the Canadian Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement; and
  • To establish a Canadian Carnegie review panel to review and determine the classification status of applicant institutions.

“Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers, and cultural advisors shared their wisdom and guidance throughout the journey, encouraging pilot participants to consider Indigenous ways of knowing, being, doing and connecting – and recognizing the importance of a decolonized approach to community engagement,” said Susan Mide Kiss, vice-president of community engagement at the University of the Fraser Valley and Canadian pilot participant.

In 2022, the Carnegie Foundation and ACE partnered to re-envision the future of the Carnegie Classifications. As part of that agreement, the Universal and Elective Classifications have been brought together under a single organizational home at ACE.

Additional information about the Canadian Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement will be announced later this year.

This press release is issued jointly by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the American Council on Education, McMaster University, the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, Simon Fraser University, and Université de Montréal.

  • établir un centre administratif et de recherche pour soutenir les activités canadiennes;
  • mettre en place un comité directeur canadien Carnegiechargé de fournir des orientations stratégiques et politiques afin de guider les opérations;
  • lancer le premier cycle de la Classification canadienne Carnegie pour l’engagement communautaire;

Mr. Kevin Solomowitz Wins 2024 Excellence in Innovation Award

Kevin works on two laptops at his desk in a school setting

We're excited to congratulate Kevin Solomowitz, a graduate of Loyola's Educational Technology Program, on being selected as the recipient of this year's Excellence in Innovation Award. This prestigious award recognizes Kevin's outstanding work in integrating technology to create innovative and engaging learning experiences.

Before starting the program, Kevin admittedly lacked confidence in using technology for virtual teaching after having to adopt new tools rapidly during the pandemic. However, through the rigorous coursework and hands-on training in the Ed Tech Program, Kevin's technological skills and self-assurance have skyrocketed. He has become a creative force, seamlessly blending tools like Google Workspace, Kahoot!, video content, and interactive Hebrew lessons to craft dynamic and student-centered lessons. For example, he found that projecting maps and videos sparked his students' curiosity far more than textbooks alone. His Hebrew keyboard projection exercise is an ingenious way to get students practicing vocabulary at their own pace.

Beyond his own classroom, Kevin has taken a leadership role in providing professional development and mentoring colleagues at his religious school. He has guided teachers in using the school's learning management system and introduced them to user-friendly tools that quickly got them excited about tech integration.

The Learning Design & Technology Program (formerly Educational Technology) is proud to have such a gifted and creative leader among its students. Once again, congratulations to Kevin on this outstanding achievement!

Master's Degrees Admission Process and Requirements

The Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology offers a Master of Arts degree program in school counseling or a Master of Science degree program in clinical mental health counseling, with the option to specialize in addictions counseling or child and adolescent counseling.

Prerequisites for admission

Applicants to all graduate programs in the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology should have graduated with, or be about to graduate with, a bachelor's or a master's degree from an accredited institution appropriate to their chosen field of graduate study. Experience in human service (field work, or service learning, or volunteer or employment) is helpful.

Materials to be submitted for application

All of the following materials must be submitted to the Graduate School by the appropriate deadline.

  • Graduate School application form and application fee
  • If coursework was completed within the United States, submit copies of all current and previous college/universities except Marquette.
  • If coursework was completed outside of the United States, a transcript evaluation is required. A copy of a course-by-course evaluation is approved for the application process.
  • Test scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test are normally required, not the GRE subject test (psychology). Please see the GRE website for score reporting schedules. NOTE: The GRE is optional for 2024-2025.
  • A statement of purpose. Please use the guidelines listed on the Marquette Graduate School webpage on drafting a SOP .
  • Resume or Vita.

For further application information, please contact the Graduate School at 414-288-7137, find Marquette's admissions materials online or email Coreen Bukowski , academic coordinator.

Virtual Interviews

After all applications are reviewed, the highest-ranking applicants will be contacted for an interview, which is required for admission. International applicants and others for whom the timeline/CST wouldn't be conducive can request to interview over the phone on a mutually agreed date/time prior to the listed interview date. Master's interviews will be periodically all day (8am-4pm CST) on Friday, March 8, 2024 .

Applicant evaluation by departmental faculty

Department faculty comprehensively review applicant files, emphasizing all aspects of applicants' backgrounds. Our assessments of potential for graduate study and success in the field are based on all components of the application, and we do not use cutoff scores with regard to previous grades or test scores. The previous median GRE combined test score of our recent master's in counseling students was 303, and the median undergraduate GPA was 3.5. The median score on the GRE writing assessment for master's students was 4.5. The faculty admits students with lower test scores or grades when there are significant compensating factors that are important for determining success in the field. If relevant, applicants should highlight these factors in their Statement of Purpose.

Those applicants who are judged to show good potential for graduate study in our department are then invited for an interview with the departmental faculty and a group of current graduate students. After the interviews have been completed, faculty review each application and make a decision about admission to the program.

Tuition and financial aid information

Tuition for a graduate education student can be found on the Graduate School tuition page . This level of tuition is fairly competitive with other institutions.

Most of the scholarships and assistantships that we offer go to doctoral students, but occasionally there are assistantships given to master’s students. Master’s students who are primary and secondary school teachers in southeastern Wisconsin are eligible for two scholarship opportunities: the Milwaukee Area Teachers Scholarship, which provides scholarships for K-12 teachers from the greater Milwaukee area, and the Catholic Schools Scholarship, which covers part of the tuition for students employed by Archdiocese of Milwaukee schools. These scholarships are available only to students enrolled at Marquette. More information is available at the Graduate School's financial aid page.

We will not know the number of assistantships available to next year's students until our admissions offers are sent out during the middle of the spring semester.
