More options for learning with Google Workspace for Education

Feb 17, 2021

[[read-time]] min read

Over 50 new features across our education products — including Classroom, Meet, Chrome and more.

During the 15 years we’ve been building tools for educators, we’ve seen the needs of instructors, education leaders and students evolve. We’ve learned that a one-size-fits all approach isn't what educators need from tools like G Suite for Education. Whether you're in a rural elementary school, urban university or homeschool setting, our technology and tools should adapt so you can focus on what matters most: teaching and learning. That's why we're making a few changes to provide you greater choice and flexibility in selecting the best tools to empower your institution.

Introducing Google Workspace for Education

Today we’re introducing the next era of G Suite for Education: Google Workspace for Education. Google Workspace for Education includes all the products you already use, like Classroom, Meet, Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and many more. More than 170 million students and educators worldwide rely on our suite of tools. Everything you need to teach, learn, connect and share will remain all in one place, accessible from anywhere on any device. To meet the diverse needs of institutions around the globe, from Pre-K to PhD,  it will now be available in four distinct editions instead of just two.

Our free edition G Suite for Education will be renamed to Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals . If you’re currently using this edition, you won't see any changes besides a new name and new features. We'll keep building new solutions for this free version by listening closely to educators and their needs.

Institutions that need more powerful security tools or that want to expand the teaching and learning tools available to their instructors can extend the capabilities of Education Fundamentals to meet their specific needs with one of our paid editions:

Google Workspace for Education Standard  builds on Education Fundamentals to provide institutions with enhanced security through  Security Center , greater visibility with tools such as advanced audit logs and more controls like advanced mobile management to make online learning even more secure.

The Teaching and Learning Upgrade  builds on Education Fundamentals or Education Standard to enhance educators’ instructional impact by providing advanced video communication capabilities in Google Meet, features to enrich class experiences in Classroom and tools that guide critical thinking and academic integrity with originality reports.

Google Workspace for Education Plus  (formerly G Suite Enterprise for Education) builds on Education Fundamentals, Education Standard and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade. This is the ultimate edition for a comprehensive solution with advanced security and analytics, teaching and learning capabilities and more.

Education Fundamentals and Education Plus are already available today and institutions will be able to purchase Education Standard and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade starting  April 14, 2021. Institutions that already purchased G Suite for Enterprise for Education will start to see the new edition name, Education Plus, in their admin console and will automatically get all the features of Education Plus.

For a complete comparison of our Google Workspace for Education editions,  visit our website . We’re always expanding the capabilities of all our offerings. In the last year alone, we’ve added dozens of free features such as hand-raising in Google Meet, rubrics in Classroom and grammar suggestions in Docs. And we’ve continued to heavily invest in our premium offerings by launching over 25 new features in 2020 to expand our advanced security controls and enhanced collaboration tools.

Introducing a new storage policy

Google has traditionally offered unlimited storage to qualifying schools and universities for free. However, as we’ve grown to serve more schools and universities each year, storage consumption has also rapidly accelerated. Storage is not being consumed equitably across —  nor within — institutions, and school leaders often don't have the tools they need to manage this. To support schools into the future and ensure fair distribution of this valuable resource, we will be implementing a new pooled storage model and helping admins and school leaders manage their storage. Nothing is changing today and we expect that more than 99% of institutions will be within the pooled storage provided by the new policy.

We remain committed to providing all institutions around the world with a best-in-class experience, including ample free storage to support quality educational experiences. The new storage model will provide schools and universities with a baseline of 100TB of pooled cloud storage shared across all of your users — more than enough storage for over 100 million docs, 8 million presentations or 400,000 hours of video. This policy will go into effect across all Google Workspace for Education editions for existing customers in July 2022 and will be effective for new customers signing up in 2022. To empower admins to adapt to this model and optimize their storage, we will provide tools to identify and manage how storage is used and allocated far in advance of the policy going into effect.

We will contact impacted institutions directly in the coming weeks to discuss a range of options for getting the storage they need. Large institutions will be provided supplemental storage later this year and all schools can gain additional storage through Education Plus and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade. For details on how to prepare for this upcoming change or to learn more about how you’ll be able to increase the storage pool for your institution, please visit our Help Center .

What’s next for Google Workspace for Education

We’re investing even further in Google Workspace for Education with dozens of new features on the way to support the needs of institutions. For example, saved drafts in Google Forms are coming to Education Fundamentals and Google Meet meeting transcripts are coming to the Teaching and Learning Upgrade. Education Plus will get both these features, as well as Classroom roster syncing. Stay tuned for more news throughout 2021.

Choice, flexibility and simplicity will continue to be guiding pillars for Google Workspace for Education, now and in the future. Whichever edition is right for you, we hope our tools keep empowering your school community to better collaborate and manage classes efficiently and securely.

Google Gift to OU Polytechnic Institute Provides for Industry Collaboration

Interlocking OU logo

Bonnie Rucker [email protected]

TULSA, OKLA. – Google has gifted the University of Oklahoma Polytechnic Institute (OUPI) at OU-Tulsa $250,000 to purchase a high-powered computing system to train students and collaborate with the commercial sector. This marks the third consecutive year Google has presented OUPI with a gift to further OU’s progress toward establishing a model for applied technology education.

Google’s support will allow OUPI to serve as a workforce solution for Tulsa and northeastern Oklahoma and align OU’s educational and research capabilities with the needs and opportunities of the region’s growing and dynamic economy. OUPI currently offers a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity. Applications opened for two additional bachelor’s degrees in applied artificial intelligence and software development and integration this month.

“We are committed to being a student-ready school that produces industry-ready graduates,” said Teri Reed, Ph.D., director of the OU Polytechnic Institute. “And this new gift from Google will allow us to take OUPI’s commercial sector connections in applied artificial intelligence to a new level. It will provide the perfect platform for our students to train, gain industry-driven experience and graduate ready to make an impact in roles that are highly sought after and vitally important in our community.”

“Our state continues to benefit from Google's investment in Oklahoma, both through its data center in Mayes County and its support of higher education, schools and nonprofits,” said U.S. Sen. Markwayne Mullin. “OU’s ability to purchase the latest AI technology with Google’s support ensures graduates are ready for today’s workplace technology environment.”

With a history of driving industry in Oklahoma, Google has created jobs for more than 800 Oklahomans and awarded more than $3 million in grants to Oklahoma nonprofits and schools to expand technology education. This gift is part of Google’s ongoing commitment to support economic development in Oklahoma, a commitment that the OU Polytechnic Institute shares.

“Google is proud once again to fund innovative educational programs with the OU Polytechnic Institute, which fosters collaboration and connection between students and industry leaders,” said Andrew Silvestri, Google’s head of external affairs in Oklahoma. “OUPI’s efforts in expanding student opportunities drive our future workforce and fuel economic growth. By equipping students with powerful computing tools, we’re helping them develop the skills needed to succeed in today’s high-tech world.”

“Google has demonstrated leadership in ensuring that northeastern Oklahoma can thrive as a hub for technological advancement. Google’s continued support of the OU Polytechnic Institute is an example of their dedication to the entire state,” said Susan Bynum, vice president of OU-Tulsa. “These funds from Google allow us to purchase the technology for OUPI graduates to truly stay on the cutting edge of industry innovation in applied artificial intelligence. It will also be instrumental in our efforts to recruit exemplary faculty and talented students. OU-Tulsa is extremely grateful to Google for this continued show of support.”

The OU Polytechnic Institute’s cutting-edge curriculum, developed with industry partners, focuses on applied knowledge, assisting the northeastern Oklahoma region in continued efforts to become a tech hub for growth and new jobs.

Partners for the OU Polytechnic Institute include Tulsa Innovation Labs, along with philanthropic partners such as the George Kaiser Family Foundation, Pamela S. and Terry L. Carter Scholarship Fund, Bank of Oklahoma and Williams.

About OU Polytechnic Institute

The University of Oklahoma Polytechnic Institute (OUPI) at OU-Tulsa is focused on high-demand, advanced and applied technology-based education. OUPI prepares graduates to transform industries in Oklahoma by offering innovative programs that meet growing demands in areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, software development and integration and digital manufacturing. OUPI at OU-Tulsa will create a pipeline of extremely skilled graduates with experience in high-demand fields, leading to high-paying jobs that will retain talent in the state and attract new students.

Changes to Google Cloud Platform Access

Under the Cardinal Cloud program , University IT (UIT) offers Google Cloud Platform (GCP) as a cloud infrastructure technology solution for the Stanford community. To improve cloud security by directly associating account holders to our campus directory, UIT is offering a free Stanford Google Workspace ID to external collaborators.

Staff, students, and faculty already have a Google Workspace ID—it’s how we in the university access Google Drive, Google Docs, and other Google apps. Additionally, anyone with a full-sponsored (paid) SUNet ID has a Stanford Google Workspace ID.

Now, people with base (free) SUNet ID can request a Google Workspace ID to use when logging into GCP. Rather than using a personal Gmail account, using a Stanford Google Workspace ID will help associate the login to the external collaborator.

By tying a Workspace ID with a SUNet ID sponsorship, GCP admins and project owners can confidently manage groups of roles and permissions, knowing every member is directly connected to Stanford.

Stanford Google Workspace IDs for Base SUNet IDs

To request a free Stanford Google Workspace ID, please submit a Help request . Don’t have a SUNet ID? Learn more about free, sponsored base SUNet IDs . Once collaborators are assigned a role in a GCP project, they can log in and begin work. They can also be added to Stanford workgroups using Workgroup Manager , which synchronizes with Google Cloud.

Keep in mind, this new ID doesn’t include the Google Workspace tools (Docs, Drive, Sheets, etc.).

For more information regarding Stanford Google Workspace IDs in GCP, visit the Stanford Google Workspace ID page .

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University and Google announced Thursday (May 23) a new collaborative research project aimed at exploring the use of AI to develop innovative solutions for low-carbon industrial building design. The project seeks to leverage AI’s power to explore new materials, technologies and design strategies that can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of industrial buildings, such as data centers, not only across the U.S. but globally.

“Google is committed to using AI to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including climate change,” said Ben Townsend, global head of infrastructure and sustainability at Google. “We are excited to partner with Purdue University on this important research project, which has the potential to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon building practices in the industrial sector.”

Conventional construction processes and physical plant operations of industrial structures pose persistent challenges when builders seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. That’s one reason why Purdue and Google are partnering on research efforts to develop new, sustainable building design approaches.

One focus area will be to prioritize the use of low-carbon building materials. The partners said research findings from this collaboration will be shared with the wider research community and industry stakeholders, aiming to boost the adoption of sustainable building practices.

“By combining Purdue’s expertise in engineering and building science with Google’s cutting-edge AI capabilities, we aim to develop innovative solutions that can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of industrial buildings,” said Travis Horton, a professor in Purdue’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering who also holds a courtesy appointment in mechanical engineering. “This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and our belief in the transformative potential of AI.”

AI is a foundational component of the  Institute for Physical Artificial Intelligence , a  Purdue Computes  initiative.

The partners said AI has the potential to have a profound impact on industrial construction, as it could provide innovative applications of low-carbon building materials, which would support reducing operational costs and making progress on global sustainability goals.

“At Google we are committed to sustainability, and we believe that technology can play a critical role in reducing carbon emissions,” said Townsend, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from Purdue.

Google, which owns and operates data centers all over the world, is continually examining systems, including innovative construction design processes, to reduce the carbon footprint of its facilities to ensure efficiency and eco-friendly construction.

“The potential to combine Purdue’s understanding of innovation and design processes with Google’s AI capabilities to enable highly efficient and scalable sustainable design foreshadows the far-reaching promise of AI to help society address its most complex challenges,” said Joe Sinfield, a professor in Purdue’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering and the director of Purdue’s Institute for Innovation Science.

Microsoft Update Warning—70% Of All Windows Users Now At Risk

This is dangerous—70% of all Windows users face an impending security nightmare.

Updated August 6 with new key-logging warnings for Windows users.

This has not been a good few weeks for Microsoft. Fresh from the Recall recoil, CrowdStrike struck, with various ups and downs with Copilot momentum in between. But the constant throughout has been an impending security nightmare for the vast majority of its Windows users, now just months away.

We’re talking Windows 10, of course, and the staggeringly painful campaign to warn hundreds of millions of holdouts that they need to upgrade to Windows 11. Back in June, I reported on the latest Microsoft nag —a full-screen warning that “end of support for Windows arrives on October 14, 2025; this means your desktop won’t receive technical support or security updates after that date.”

If there was any doubt as to the real danger in leaving Windows unprotected, then Monday’s US government warning should quickly change minds. A 2018 Windows vulnerability has been added to its Exploited Vulnerability ( KEV ) catalog. “Microsoft COM for Windows,” CISA warns, “contains a deserialization of untrusted data vulnerability that allows for privilege escalation and remote code execution.”

Users have been given until August 26 to patch or cease using Windows systems. Clearly, this 2018 vulnerability does not impact Windows 11, nor any other Windows system updated in the last six years. The Windows 10 risk, though, is real.

The prompt for CISA’s warning appears to be an August Cisco Talos report claiming that a Chinese hacking group with links to the country’s Ministry of State Security may have successfully exploited CVE-2018-0824 as part of an attack on a government research center in Taiwan. The center was “likely compromised,” Talos says.

“APT41 is a prolific and dangerous threat actor that all users and cybersecurity practitioners should be keeping track of,” Talos warns . “APT41 created a tailored loader to inject a proof of concept for CVE-2018-0824 , a remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft COM for Windows, directly into memory to achieve local privilege escalation… Users should ensure all Windows systems are up to date to the latest version to protect against this vulnerability.”

If CVE-2018-0824 and APT41 all sounds a bit niche and unlikely to target your own Windows PC at home, then SnakeKeylogger is quite the opposite. The Register warns that “criminals are preying on Windows users yet again, this time in an effort to hit them with a keylogger that can also steal credentials and take screenshots.”

“Its arsenal includes keystroke logging, harvesting credentials, and capturing screenshots,” Fortinet ’s security research team warned this month of the SnakeKeyLogger trojan threat to Windows users. “Based on the FortiGuard telemetry, there were hundreds of 0-day detection hits. Moreover, the sites that the trojan connects to were queried several times which suggests infection.”

Windows 10 Vs Windows 11, July 2023-July 2024

While this hasn’t surfaced into a full scale zero-day warning as yet—more variations on a theme, it’s yet another reminder as to potential Windows vulnerabilities if the OS is not tightly managed. SnakeKeylogger targets users by way of malicious downloads, shared over email through phishing campaigns.

Back in 2022, Check Point Research warned that SnakeKeyLogger “is usually spread through emails that include docx or xlsx attachments with malicious macros, however this month researchers reported that SnakeKeylogger has been spread via PDF files. Users are advised to maintain good antivirus software and attachment scanning, as well as to beware the attachments the download and open to keep safe.

Putting aside CVE-2018-0824 being woken from the dead and the much more current SnakeKeyLogger RAT, the real challenge for many Windows 10 users is more one of hardware than the softer UI side of their Windows OS. If their machines are not suitable for Windows 11—as many are not, then they find themselves in an upgrade trap, having to buy new hardware for no ostensibly good reason other than Windows 10 coming off support. This becomes a resentful purchase to say the least.

But we are where we are. Windows hasn’t changed its stripes, and nor has Microsoft’s approach. The threats disclosed this week are serious in themselves, but they’re also further good examples as to why the prospect of hundreds of millions of Windows users heading towards end-of-support is a security nightmare.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Maybe, just maybe, users are now starting to listen—albeit not enough, not nearly fast enough. As Windows specialist Neowin has just reported, “in July 2024, Windows 11 hit an important milestone: for the first time since its launch in October 2021, the operating system crossed the 30% market share mark.” Just. With the latest stats from Statcounter showing better than 7% year-over-year growth for Windows 11.

But that means that more than twice as many Microsoft Windows users are still not using Windows 11 than those that are. Even now. Three-years post launch.

Window 11 isn’t at all new, and all those converts and non-converts know its pros and cons; so setting aside a Copilot AI-driven boost, the question is whether this is a trend or a blip. Certainly, when you look at Statcounter’s Windows 10 chart decline over the last year (above), the line chart is not something you could ski down. Similarly, Windows 11 growth is an easy stroll up a gently slope, to put it mildly.

And so, while it’s clearly good news that there’s some movement, the reality looks worrying. There will be some accelerated shifting to Windows 11 in the coming months ahead of their October 2025 end-of-life, and there will be some companies and home users (when it’s available) taking up extended paid support. But there will also be many millions of users coming off support and taking the risk. With plenty of headlines fueling the reluctance, this problem isn’t going away ( 1 , 2 , 3 ).

Take a look at Reddit or even the comments to this article and you’ll see the large body of Windows users opinion that is waiting for Microsoft to pull a late rabbit from the hat and extend Windows 10 support. Quite how that will land with all those who have made the investment to upgrade remains to be seen.

Given the experience of recent weeks, with those global images of blue screens of death all around, come next October, this could be a hackers’ paradise for some time at least. The other factor that will play will be bad actors taking advantage of the bad situation and mailing out scam after scam to target worried Windows 10 users.

Expect to see plenty of that through 2025.

Susan Wojcicki , who helped turn Google from a start-up in her garage into an internet juggernaut, and who became one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent female executives with her leadership of YouTube, died on Friday. She was 56.

Her death was confirmed by her husband, Dennis Troper, who wrote on Facebook that she had been living with lung cancer for two years. He did not say where she died.

Ms. Wojcicki’s more than two decades with Google began in 1998 in her house in Menlo Park, Calif., part of which she rented to her friends Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the company’s founders. For $1,700 a month, the two used the garage as their office to build the search engine.

Ms. Wojcicki, who had been working at Intel, soon joined Google as one of its earliest employees and was its first marketing manager. Over the years, she reached its executive ranks, becoming Google’s most senior woman employee. She eventually led YouTube, which Google acquired in 2006, and which became one of the world’s largest social media companies.

“She is as core to the history of Google as anyone, and it’s hard to imagine the world without her,” Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, said in a statement .

When she became YouTube’s chief executive in 2014, Ms. Wojcicki was hailed as the most powerful woman in advertising. She had made Google enormously profitable, and she was expected to repeat the trick at YouTube. She led Google’s ad business and played a key role in its acquisition of DoubleClick , an advertising technology company, in 2007.
