12 Best Manhwa Websites List Online In 2024

South Korean comic books, also known as manhwa, are some of the most riveting forms of artistic expression and popular entertainment in today’s world.

With the growing surge of attention that manhwa is getting across the globe, more and more places where you can read manhwa are popping up online.

However, many of these sites and apps are insecure and unreliable so you may be risking your data and privacy when you visit them.

Often you also have to deal with crappy translations, poor user and reading experiences, low graphics quality, and other annoyances that prevent you from enjoying the comics the way you’re meant to.

As a voracious reader of manhwa myself, I’ve done all the research for this article and put together a list of the best manhwa websites.

Almost all of these sites boast of large libraries and loads of free high-quality manhwa content to choose from.

Let’s find out what we have hee.

What's the best Website to read the Manhwa?

I am almost up to date with the Manhwa on Webtoon. But I saw that the manhwa is further on some Websites than the Webtoon. So I don't know what I should do now. Should I just stick to reading on Webtoon or should I read it on a Website?if yes which is the best Website to read it on?

Bato. Trust. only one without 12 ads that take u off the website and it also has almost every manhwa on it

Flame and Asura are probably the most popular ones for good reason. I personally use Flame and haven't had any issues with it, can't say anything on Asura tho

Personally I have the worst experience on Asura, whenever I bookmark a manhwa im reading it gets corrupted and I lose all progress. This isnt even an issue on my web browser because it happened on chrome and firefox. And their bookmarking system built into the website doesn't work at all either

Rn Asura got accounts finally so bookmarks work fine(for now), but they fully delete comments several times on whole site, so if you care about them then kinda sucks

Go with care. There ist also a lot of NSFW which can be turned of and a whole lot of other good stuff. Toongod .org

flamecomics.com . It may lag tho and also, use an adblock

Depends on the title honestly, Asura and Flame are top 2 for me but they mostly do shounen action type my personal favourite is manhwa-freak though they have both manhwa and manga (not a lot only few but all great title) and if you want to read everything literally any manhwa I suggest zinmanga or mangabat

Where can i read solo leveling?

Thank you for the answers

Do you mean the manhwa or the novel ?

And btw u/JailOfAir is right, did you even google it ?

I’ve only just started researching personally after watching the first episode of the new anime on crunchyroll… I couldn’t handle the wait for more… so I wanted to start reading… what’s the difference and what would you recommend- the manhwa or the novel? Also I personally did google it and this was the first thing to popped up in my search 🔍 …

As far as I remember, story wise, the Manhwa is pretty complete in the first part (and even adds a few scenes) but is kinda lacking and rushed at the end (but still pretty good).

Imho the manhwa is good enough and more accessible if you want more of SL but also reading the Novel gives you the more complete experience.

The manhwa gets carried by art, the novel unfortunately doesn't have that perk so it's just straight up dogshit. That's the difference.

https://sololeveling.net/ is the best one I think. A lot of the others cut it in pieces as if it's a manga, so reading it is a little dizzying, but the link I sent you loads all images.

You can choose to read one page at a time on there if you want, and it has it cut in the correct places, but reading on your phone and scrolling is really the best way (especially if you're like me and get motion sick easily, but also like to read fast).

Is there way to read it now

https://mangadex.org seems to work well doesn't have any splicing or missing panels

Found this place works great no ads and loads fast https://www.solo-leveling-manhwa.com/

Thanks a lot bro! been reading this manhwa at other website, manhwa not in correct order.

https://mangazoneapp.com/ if you want to download the app for iOS or Android. You can download chapters for offline use. It saves your spot too across devices. I googled the same thing and this reddit thread popped up first like others have said, but original post was 4yr ago. I hope OG got his answer.

I don't mean to be rude, but have you even tried to google it? There's literally dozens of sites that host Solo Leveling, I find it weird that you would come all the way to reddit to ask.

Anyway. here you go:

https://mangadex.org/chapter/639592/1

Where can I read solo leveling (manhwa)

Mangazone stopped supporting solo lebelong so I need some help

I personally prefer https://mangatx.com/manga/solo-leveling-manhwa-free/ they don’t have any pop ups and the format is clean

It just says they dont have any sponsors for me and wont open the manwha

4 years later and I'm thanking you, but... The website is down. "mangatx.com currently does not have any sponsors for you."

Right now (went watching after the first ep on anime *-*) I'm reading on https://slmanga.org/ they have no ads and soo far the only site that have all the pages working most of the others I visited either had some sh*tty quality or mid-page broken images

Someone was kind enough on this forum to give me this other link https://w1.sololeveling.net/manga/solo-leveling-chapter-80/ this is what I’ve been using recently and it works great.

Tried reading it on many websites but they're all full of ads, this one doesn't have any and loads fast, can recommend https://solo-leveling-manhwa.com/

Thanks man 🫶🏻

Where is the best place to read manga online?

I’m very new to reading manga, and while I would like to have physical books, I don’t have the money nor the room for volumes at the moment.

I’m wondering, where online is the best place to read manga. I have found a couple random websites for the choice reads that I have looked for, but I’m wondering if there are any websites that I can find where there is a large collection of manga that can be found. If not, what are some of the best websites that can be used in conjunction with each other to provide most mainstream manga.

Also, if there is somewhere I could potentially download manga and that is a better option than just looking on the websites, I am able to do that as well.

Any other advice is appreciated as I don’t really know much about where to find or read manga, so all advice is helpful.

Edit: Here's a resource for full list of sites

https://reallyneedcash.com/free-manga-sites/

well, you can try mangapill or mangafire

You should try to visit: https://comick.fun

One of the largest comic libraries. You can find official scans or comics from popular scan groups.

Website is gone. Got a new link?

the website is fine, but try to use https://1.1.1.1 or protonvpn.com

check https://comick.cc

Tachiyomi was a perfect site but it sadly got deleted

The best place that is currently popular among the community is mangadex.org. Scanulators usually post their scans onto it immediately after it’s translated, and the site holds manga, manwha, and also manhua.

True but for first chapters it sometimes doesn't have the translation in english, which is weird

I usually read in portuguese there

Why is everything is Spanish?? 😭 there are way more English and Korean readers

Usually on the home page it'll be showing whatever updated last, so if a scanlation group that TLs to Spanish uploaded recently then it would show. If you don't want to see that just go into the options and filter English only.

Can mihon be downloaded on iphone?

It’s when a physical book is photocopied, literally scanned via a printer or high resolution photographs. Basically you’re reading what is a physical book online

What are your guy's favorite sites to read manhua/manhwa on?

I currently just use asura scans, but I have tried both reaper and zero scans. I try to only use official sites that pay the authors.

I think Mangago.me has the most amount of manga. I'd suggest making an account so you can display multiple pages at a time whilst reading. It also has user made lists and has all the comments intact.

Asura scan is a kind of like premium website for manhwas/manhwas. The problem with sites like reaper scan and zero scans is that the catalog is quite small and low quality. There is a site I’ve been using for a while now which has one of the biggest catalogs of works I’ve seen it’s called mangakakalot.com it’s got works of mangas / manhwas and manhuas it’s got over 100,000 stories . There are a few more that are pretty good but this is the biggest one I know of. Ps if you need any other recommendations for sites hmu.

I also used to use mangakalot but since it just scrapes the mangas from the actual sites I don't believe the authors receive payment from it so I dont use it anymore. It also bricked my phone from the sheer quantity of trackers and adware it placed on it.

It’s a pretty good site problem is there are many sites with the same name mangakakalot the one I use has no ads. The problem with the artist and them getting paid and reading it on different sites then the one that translated it is your conscience and which site is easier and more convenient for you to use. And I think the ones that get paid are the translator since the original art work is released in Korean or Chinese first and in their perspective countries then later a scans team picks it up and releases it in English translation. Ofcourse there are some studios that do the artwork and translation since they adapt it from a novel first.

Manga websites with no ads

Can someone please suggest manga websites that have no ads?

I just can’t seem to find a good manga reading website that’s free!

Try mangazone app, no ads at all

Comic.cc has a lot of great mangas and no ads

You can read mange for free with no ads here https://www.mangasub.com/

Where can I read??

hey i'm tryna read the boxer and idk any good website to read it on, so can you guys jus say where you read it.

Mangafire.to, bro, it's the best currently!

You’re the best man. I’ve been looking for a good site for weeks!

For anime, I would say it's currently aniwave ( https://everythingmoe.com/ )

It's on webtoon

ik u wrote this comment a long time ago but its so weird how I keep noticing series on webtoons being SUPER short on episodes, like I remember years ago reading FAAR into the Boxer, then I come back to it recently and its only showing up to 7 chapters? And I look it up on other sites and its at chapter 145 (around) and I keep seeing this with other comics like mage and demon queen even saying its been completed.

The reason for that is that webtoon has been shifting it's model towards something similar to tapas. So there are, and I could be wrong as it's been a while since I read it, roughly 98 chapters on Webtoon. At the time, that was the end. I believe webtoon allows 1 free chapter a day after the initial 7? Unless they've changed again.

You can read it, for free, here: https://chapmanganato.com/manga-iq985525

7 Great Manhwa That Blend Genres

10 manhwa characters who hide their strength, solo leveling: 10 things only manhwa fans know about sung jin woo, key takeaways.

  • Manhwa platforms offer diverse reading experiences for fans, from simple interfaces to inclusive LGBT+ stories and mainstream works.
  • Variety in manhwa platforms means options like free browsing, subscription perks, and deals, catering to different reader preferences.
  • Challenges like limited libraries, confusing user interfaces, and varying currency systems should be considered when choosing a manhwa website.

Despite the ever-pervading influence of manga in pop culture, Korean comics or manhwa have been on the rise courtesy of remarkable works - especially hits that have been adapted as anime, films, and even television series. Moreover, with the manhwa scene also accommodating up-and-coming authors and artists, it’s easier for almost anyone with a story to tell to share their works to a wider audience. Unfortunately for newcomers, finding the best website to read manhwa may end up much harder than usual - especially with many of them functioning through chapter-unlocking via special currencies.

best manhwa yandere male leads

7 Best Manhwa Yandere Male Leads

Yandere male leads in Manhwa are intensely obsessed with their love interest and have the potential to become killers. Here are some top examples.

Thankfully, manhwa reader hopefuls don’t necessarily have to quit their journeys just because access to websites can get tricky. In fact, some manhwa websites can specifically tailor to a reader’s needs, be it casual free exploration or more dedicated reading. However, just what are some of the best manhwa websites out there?

10 Mangatoon

Decent selection of manhwa and manhua hindered by its ui.

Mangatoon

Subscription Fee, System

Coins: USD 0.99 (100) up to USD 99.99 (10,000 +50), access to all stories until Coins run out.

Advantages

Decent library of works, including manhua. Separate options to submit works as a contributor, or put them up for review to become a contracted work.

Disadvantages

Currency options somewhat confusing. Limited library of manhwa to read. In-page ads can be off-putting for readers, although this seems limited to viewing the site in mobile devices (not the app). Translations not as good compared to other sites. Janky transition from website to mobile-optimized interface, even on browser.

Mangatoon is a great option for reader looking for a decent starting platform to get a more fulfilling manhwa reading experience. The platform contains not only novels and manhwa , but also manhua (Chinese comics) - perfect for expanding a fan’s reading selection. Its small library of works can make reader choice rather limited, making its price point a potential factor for contention when it comes to securing purchases. Chapters usually cost 20 Coins to unlock permanently, or 10 Coins to borrow.

Aside from having a limited library, the presence of in-page ads on buttons that lead to affiliate pages when clicked can become off-putting for potential readers - although this is something only prevalent when viewing the website on mobile. Another potential turn-off for readers would also be its off-putting interface, as sometimes images don’t load, textboxes have default fonts, and certain areas of the site transition to mobile-optimized formats even on desktop.

Simple Interface, Coins Purchasing Emphasize Comfortable Reading

Lalatoon

Subscription Fee, System

Coins: USD 4.49 (20) up to USD 44.99 (320), access to all stories until Coins run out.

Advantages

Straightforward reading platform. Accessible interface. Mature works locked under age restriction.

Disadvantages

Limited library of manhwa. Simple interface doesn’t generate a lot of visual appeal.

Lalatoon is a must-try for manhwa fans who want more straightforward reading sessions. Compared to other platforms, Lalatoon has a more compact library that doesn’t complicate the browsing experience. Fans can immediately choose from daily releases, new series, and recommendations. There is even a dedicated tab where Lalatoon gives a thumbnail view of daily releases, and a separate tab for genre selection.

best reincarnation manhwa featured image

10 Best Reincarnation Manhwa, Ranked

The reincarnation subgenre is among one of the most popular emerging subgenres, sharing tales of reincarnation into the same or different worlds.

Despite its small library, Lalatoon has a dedicated section for adult stories and even features works that dwell on boys’ love and girls’ love . Lalatoon locks its chapters behind Coins, which readers can buy for what seems to be a reasonable rate. Episodes can be unlocked at prices beginning 3 Coins, while most stories offer a lot of free chapters prior to meeting a paywall.

8 Pocket Comics

Straightforward ui, accessible interface make reading more enticing.

Pocket Comics

Subscription Fee, System

Coins: USD 0.99 (10) up to USD 99.99 (1,000 + 104), access to all stories until Coins run out.

Advantages

Compact reading interface. Decent selection of manhwa for readers. Newcomer promos and Bonus Free Episodes available, making it enticing to purchase Coins.

Disadvantages

Limited library of works. Episode costing may vary, as some cost Tickets instead of Coins, which can be confusing.

Pocket Comics is a decent platform for readers who are also fans of compelling manhwa and want to read them with an intuitive app. Its bright interface can encourage more productive reading, alongside a straightforwardly navigable UI that makes choosing works much easier. As with other platforms, Pocket Comics offers featured works. However, its selection seems to be more specialized: recommended works for newcomers, must-reads for the month, updates for the day, and even special promos.

Featured image of Strongest Vampire Characters

7 Strongest Vampires In Manhwa, Ranked

A lot of vampires exist in manhwa, but these individuals are the strongest and most intimidating of the bunch.

Pocket Comics locks episodes with currency in the form of Coins, of which chapters usually cost around 3 to 5 Coins to unlock. The abundance of promos and bonuses for fans can make reading in Pocket Comics very enticing and worthwhile, although some series being unlocked behind another currency (Tickets) with variability in acquisition can be off-putting.

7 INKR Comics

Decent selection of titles alongside sleek interface, simple ui.

INKR

Subscription Fee, System

INKR Extra: USD 4.99/mo or USD 44.99/yr. Coins: USD 1.99 (32), up to USD 99.99 (1,600 Coins)

Advantages

Some selection of mainstream works available. Separate options to Rent (with Ink) or Unlock Permanently (with Coins) chapters. INKR Extra comes with perks (Weekly Free Ink, Bonus Coins, Free 1st Dibs on hit releases, access Rentable Chapters for free, Discounts). INKR Studio showcases publishers and their works. Earnable Ink can be converted into Coins. INKR for Publishers gives aspiring authors and artists the opportunity to submit works.

Disadvantages

Limited library of works. Hefty Ink cost for Coins conversion can make collecting tiresome.

INKR provides readers with many options when it comes to choosing works they want to read, making its website similar to other platforms that also offer similar services. Instead of a convoluted system, however, INKR has a more straightforward system: Inks can be used to “rent” manhwa chapters, while Coins can permanently make chapters available for reading. The INKR Extra subscription also offers perks such as bonus Coins and monthly free Ink, as well as first dibs for free previews of the site’s most popular releases.

Despite this appeal, however, the limited number of works featured in INKR may turn off some users when it comes to fully exploring the platform. While INKR has some mainstream manga such as Vinland Saga , there’s not a lot of works at the moment to justify a full subscription in INKR Extra.

Simplified Interface, Unlimited Reading Promo Hindered By Smaller Library

Toomics

Subscription Fee, System

Toomics VIP: USD 8.99/mo, USD 39.96/ 3mos.

Advantages

Decent selection of manhwa. Toomics VIP gives an unlimited reading option. Frequent promotions for first-time VIPs. Mature content locked behind age verification.

Disadvantages

Fairly limited selection of manhwa for its unlimited reading pricing.

Toomics is perfect for manhwa fans who want a more compact platform for their reading experience. Right off the bat, Toomics boasts a more straightforward platform with a gallery of highly-viewed works , recent episodes, as well as weekly and upcoming releases. It also has a mature section locked by a dedicated button, which leads to an age verification.

featured image for manhwas with blended genres

These manhwa are a hybrid of different genres, that elevate their stories in noticeable ways.

Unlike other manhwa reading platforms, Toomics skips point-based episode unlocks and opts for unlimited-reading offers through Toomics VIP. However, compared to other platforms, the pricing for Toomics VIP is more expensive for its smaller library of works.

5 Lezhin Comics

Brings inclusive, lgbt+ stories to the limelight.

Lezhin Comics

Subscription Fee, System

Coins: USD 4.99 (20) up to USD 39.99 (1,400 + 500 Coins), access to all stories until Coins run out.

Advantages

Large selection of LGBT-themed stories. Mature section appropriately labeled and separated from core content. Free episodes are available daily, as well as opportunities to earn Bonus Coins.

Disadvantages

Email-based submission process for creators seem limiting. Lacks in selection of more mainstream manhwa.

Lezhin Comics provides a lot of inclusive content, making this a great site for manhwa fans looking for more variety in the works they're reading, especially as the reading platform highlights LGBT+ content. Its plethora of reading options highlight the popularity of the boys’ love (BL) genre , making the website perfect for romance fans. Its tabs feature daily releases, series sorted by rankings, a dedicated tab for BL and GL (girls’ love) content, as well as a separate locked tab for mature content. Hopeful creators can also submit works via email, although this is an area for improvement as other sites have dedicated platforms for indie creators.

Coins are the reading currency in Lezhin, with price ranges similar to the tiers of other paid services. Episode cost in Coins can vary depending on factors such as popularity, although it seems per-chapter costs in Lezhin are much cheaper compared to other platforms. Unfortunately, Lezhin suffers from a lack of mainstream pieces - something that fans who want to explore more niche works may appreciate.

4 Tappytoon

Consistent pricing per episode and has option for monthly subscription.

Tappytoon

Subscription Fee, System

Tappytoon Club: USD 4.99/mo, specific perks; Points: USD 4.99 (3,900) up to USD 94.99 (91,000), access to episodes until Points run out.

Advantages

Tappytoon Club provides monthly coins, daily bonuses, 12hr Time-Till-Free chapters. Vast library of both manhwa and novels. Time-Till-Free and Points-for-Ads provide free browsing options. Various promos, bundles, and deals can lessen spending. Episode cost is consistent across titles.

Disadvantages

Tappytoon Club akin to a game battlepass, reading is still limited. Episode cost regardless of title status seems inefficient for stories. Points earned through ads not enough for multiple episodes.

Tappytoon offers many viewing options for manhwa fans, ensuring there's some way of reading manhwa that fits a reader's preferences and available devices. As with other platforms, Tappytoon is accessible on desktop and mobile apps. However, the service has a more diverse slate of stories - specifically novels that not all platforms feature. Tappytoon also has a Time-Till-Free option to read episodes for free at a limited time. At the same time, securing Points via ads can give readers things to do while waiting for their favorite series to release an episode.

Manhwa Characters Who Hide Their Strength featured image

These characters are experts at concealing their true abilities to fool their opposition or for other noble reasons.

Subscription-wise, Tappytoon locks manhwa episodes under a consistent paywall of 300 Points regardless of story. Tappytoon Club also offers a monthly USD 4.99 subscription for access to a bundle of Points per month, Points for daily check-in, and half the waiting time for Time-Till-Free chapters. Perhaps the largest setback facing Tappytoon Club is its pricing model, as some users might see its cost still outweighing the benefits. For starters, getting the lowest Point-tier (3,900 for USD 4.99) means only being able to read 13 episodes at a time. Moreover, Tappytoon Club freebies only support an extra 14 chapters’ worth of Points (+4,400) monthly, give Points to cover an episode every 10 days (+30 Points per check-in), and a 12-hour refresh for daily free reading.

Myriad Of Reading Options Provide Browsing Versatility To Manhwa Fans

Tapas

Subscription Fee, System

Ink: USD 1.99 (1,600) up to USD 99.99 (80,000 + 50,000), access to episodes until Ink runs out.

Advantages

Access to mainstream and indie titles. Free Access and Watch Ad options provide more free viewing options. Tapas Creators allows fans to create their indie titles. Bundle Feature can buy episodes in bulk, while 1-Tap auto-purchases episodes for a lower price when swiping on the next locked chapter after a previous episode. Free Episodes and Free Ink can be obtained via promos, invite referrals and events.

Disadvantages

Regular price adjustments and multiple Ink-based purchases can make keeping track of reading options confusing.

Tapas offers diversity to the manhwa-reading scene with its plethora of manhwa choices across different genres and even reading options. Similar to most other platforms, its desktop and mobile iterations make reading their selections of impressive manhwa and novels accessible and intuitive. However, unlike other platforms, Tapas does offer different free-browsing options outside their Ink system. These include Free Access that makes chapters available for limited timeframes, and Watch Ads that unlock episodes after watching an advertisement. Tapas Creators also provide fans with the option to create their indie manhwa.

In terms of availing episodes, Tapas has a currency called Ink that can be purchased in bulk, much like in other services. Ink can be used to purchase episodes in bulk via Bundles, and 1-Tap that auto-unlocks episodes upon swiping. Perhaps a point of contention regarding Tapas has to do with its pricing, as the variability of Ink costs per episode can limit browsing options for readers. Moreover, multiple Ink-based purchase methods for chapters can make keeping track challenging for casual enjoyers.

Use Coins To Read Episodes, Or Aspire To Make An Original Webtoon

Webtoon

Subscription Fee, System

Coins: USD 0.99 (10) up to USD 64.99 (723), access to episodes until Coins run out.

Advantages

Access to both mainstream and indie titles. Fast Pass provides early-access features to episodes. Webtoon Canvas lets indie creators showcase their stories. Daily Pass and other free-browsing options frequently available. Free Coins are given periodically through promotions.

Disadvantages

Limited free-browsing options. Coins system can limit browsing opportunities.

Webtoon has a recognizable green branding it has earned for being one of the most popular manhwa-reading sites, making the site a must-try for newcomers. Perhaps considered the “OG” mainstream manhwa website, Webtoon has some of the most comprehensive libraries of manhwa across various categories, including mainstream works . Aspiring content creators can also become a creator via Webtoon Canvas, giving them a platform to publish indie stories. As with other platforms, Webtoon has a user-friendly mobile and desktop interface integrated fairly decently with its pricing model.

Webtoon uses a Coins system for viewing its stories. Locked episodes can be unlocked and stored in a user’s library through Coins, which they can purchase for different amounts at a time. Coins can have a variety of uses, such as early-access Fast Passes for specific series, and an Episode Bundle to unlock a set number of episodes. Webtoon also has free-browsing options, such as Daily Passes that refresh daily, or Free Coins that are periodically given during promotions. While Webtoon has one of the most expansive manhwa libraries in the reading market, its subscription model can cause headaches for fans - especially since the country and the payment platforms are only available in select countries, alongside potential payment technical issues.

Monthly Subscription For All-Episode Access Instead Of Per-Episode Pricing

Manta

Subscription Fee, System

Manta Unlimited: USD 4.99/mo, access to all stories.

Advantages

Manta Unlimited’s monthly fee lets users maximize their manhwa reading, while Free Passes let users access stories for free at a limited time. The platform is accessible in both mobile and desktop formats.

Disadvantages

Limited Free Passes mean users have to wait a certain timeframe for the pass to refresh. Discontinued series only stay for some time and can be permanently removed from libraries.

Manta has a reasonable subscription option that makes this reading platform a practical choice for fans willing to splurge for quality reading time. Both the Manta website and mobile app are navigable and accessible to users, with an interface that immediately displays the highest-rated series, completed stories , and genre hits. Manta also has suggested stories per day, encouraging users to try different stories instead of sticking to a few favorites.

However, what makes Manta an ideal subscription-based platform is its payment model: the Manta Unlimited program. Unlike other websites with per-episode or credit-based subscriptions, Manta makes all pieces available for reading with a straightforward USD 4.99 monthly fee. Another alternative for readers would be Free Passes, where “locked” series episodes can be made available for 72 hours with limited Passes that refresh daily.

Best Websites to Read Manhwa

Image of Jordan Althoff

Manhwa  is a Korean comic that is designed for digital publication instead of physical volumes like its manga counterpart. Because of this, many apps and websites have been launched, specifically for digital comics, also known as webtoons. Here are the best websites to read manhwa.

The homepage for Lezhin.

Lezhin has the biggest selection of LGBT manhwa and has all of the biggest names in the genre, like Jinx and Sora & Haena . It runs on a Coin system, where every episode is either 20 or 30 Coins, depending on the manhwa. Its most popular deal is $15.99 for 560 Coins + 150 Bonus Coins. It is more expensive, but Lezhin will give regular readers ample chances to gain free Bonus Coins to go toward unlockable episodes. There are also wait-until-free options.

4. Tapas Comics

The homepage for Tapas Comics. This image is part of an article about the best websites to read manhwa.

Tapas , also known as Tapastic, is a website and app that has a large variety of manhwa and other webtoons for readers to explore. Both its app and website are easy to navigate. Readers can search by genre and then by popularity, what’s trending, and what is a Tapas Original. However, for those who want to read more mature content, that is only available on the website and not available on the app. Some webtoons are free, some are on a wait-until-free episode basis, and others need to be unlocked with Ink, the currency for the site. The best deal on Tapas is the 8,000 +2,500 Ink for $9.99, but there is a $1 and $5 option. Each manhwa episode Ink cost will differ depending on how popular the manhwa is, with episodes being up to 450 Ink. There are sales and ways to lower the cost.

Tappytoon is comparable to Tapas in terms of the amount of content and how much it costs. The best deal on Tappytoon is the $9.99 option, which gives 7,000 +1,000 Points. It seems less than Tapas, but every episode, no matter the popularity, is 300 Points. Tappytoon does have popular manhwa like Solo Leveling and The Max Level Newbie . Its sorting system doesn’t get quite as specific as Tapas, but it will list those that are complete and which ones are currently trending.

2. Webtoons

The homepage for Weebtoons. This image is part of an article about the best websites to read manhwa.

Webtoons has a huge library of Manhwa to sift through and has a really easy way to navigate both the website and its app. It has a lot of well-known manhwa, as well as other well-known indie webtoons like Lore Olympus . The best deal on Webtoons is $9.99 for 100 Coins + 8 Coins. Each episode can be anywhere from 3 to 7 coins each, depending on the webtoon. However, there are a lot of wait-until-free options, with more webtoons eventually being free instead of being locked behind a paywall indefinitely.

The homepage for Manta. This image is part of an article about the best websites to read manhwa.

Manta gets the number one spot because of its price. Manta, unlike the other apps and websites, has a pay monthly option for $4.99 a month that allows readers to have access to an unlimited amount of episodes. This replaces the pay-per-episode format of most apps and websites. For those who don’t want to pay the monthly fee, a huge selection of manhwa is available under the wait-until-free system. The app and website are both easy to navigate as well, making it an all-around great reader experience.

And those are the best websites to read manhwa. For more Manhwa content, check out the top manhwa similar to Solo Leveling .

good websites for manhwa

The best sites to read manhwa and webtoons

Francisca Santos

Finding a good manhwa or webtoon to read these days isn’t easy, not because there are few options, but because there are far too many to choose from. What makes it even harder is finding a website that caters to your specific tastes in manhwa and webtoons.

Japanese manga has been around much longer holding a steadier popularity level. Essentially, this also means that the comics world offers endless options for reading manga , from VIZ Jump to Manga Plus, but sadly, the selection for manhwa is more limited. However, if you’re searching for the best sites for reading manhwa and webtoons in English, we’ve got you covered — as always.

Lezhin Comics

One of the best websites for reading manhwa and webtoons is definitely Lezhin US. The official translation team is efficient and quick in their work, and on top of that, they offer a vast collection of titles. Known as the website with the most extensive selection of spicy BL titles , Lezhin also features a wide range of genres, from GL and historical to action and even slice of life. It is a paid service though, and not one of the cheapest; you purchase coins, which you can then use to buy chapters. However, with such a vast library, you’ll never run out of things to read.

Webtoon App

WEBTOON is undoubtedly one of the platforms you’ve come across at some point during your search. It contains some of the most popular romance titles in manhwa, and overall, it boasts some of the coolest features among all the reading platforms: If you’re an artist, you have the opportunity to submit your work to be published on WEBTOON. This means that non-licensed South Korean manhwas also find a place on WEBTOON, providing a wide range of reading options. Moreover, you can read on WEBTOON for free, that is, if you don’t mind occasional ads.

INKR Website

If you’re seeking a one-size-fits-all reading platform, INKR would be the one for you. This app offers not only manga and webtoons but also manhua —Chinese comics—and manhwa, all translated into English. While the titles may not be as widely known as some others on our list, you’ll find some of the best gems in the medium, like the popular BL title, Whose Baby is it? which is so worth your time and a tooth cavity. Similar to Lezhin, INKR operates on a coin-based system where you acquire ink, which can then be exchanged for coins to purchase chapters.

Tappytoon logo from their website with a white background

Tappytoon sits right at the top of our recommendations for one of the absolute best manhwa and webtoon reading apps. Similar to Lezhin, Tappytoon isn’t afraid to delve into more mature-themed stories, often featuring explicit and spicy content instead of wholesome romances. However, you’ll find a bit of everything to suit your taste, from the action-packed Solo Leveling to the wholesome historical GL, Her Tale of Shim Chong .

Mostly a paid platform, Tappytoon does require you to purchase points to unlock chapters. Don’t be too discouraged though because it offers an entire section of free webtoons and manhwa that become available for a limited time. It’s the best of both worlds.

Toomics logo with some manhwa characters behind the letters

One thing we ought to remember is that the interfaces of these websites are often very similar to each other. At this point, before we commit to any of them, we should also consider: the variety of manhwa they offer; and if they have any unique features that enhance and facilitate our reading experience. That’s where Toomics comes in.

Not only is its library incredibly vast, but it also offers a way to find only works that are family-friendly, in case you might be reading in the same room as your grandma . Much like most platforms, Toomics is also a paid service, but if you subscribe to their services, you can access their entire library without needing to pay for each individual chapter.

Tapas logo with a yellow backgroup, saying "Daily Story snacks"

Tapas is a true gem in the world of webtoon and manhwa reading platforms. Firstly, it’s one of the main websites that hosts well-known titles for fans and readers, including names like Dear Door and Red Candy . Secondly, much like WEBTOON, it offers a diverse range of content, not limited to just South Korean manhwa .

On Toomics, several indie authors can also publish their work, offering a much wider variety of webtoons and comics — like Heartstopper . Toomics is also one of the few platforms where the content is almost entirely free, only requiring you to watch ads to unlock chapters. Alternatively, you can purchase the in-app currency called “ink” to avoid ads.

Manta comics' logo with cellphones showing their app

Manta is more of an underrated recommendation, as the app is possibly one of the most recent platforms on this list. However, that doesn’t make it any less worthy of praise. Manta boasts a modern and sleek design that sets it apart from the brightness of many other reading apps. However, its catalog is still a work in progress. Nonetheless, in just a couple of years, Manta has grown to gather some of the most loved titles in webtoon and manhwa, such as Under the Oak Tree and Love Jinx. Manta is also a subscription-based platform, and by subscribing, you gain unlimited access to all its comics.

Netcomics logo from the Appstore

Netcomics is also among the most popular manhwa and comics reading websites, not only for its vast library and variety of stories but also as one of the pioneering reading websites for South Korean webtoons in the U.S. Netcomics’ origins date all the way back to 2006, when manhwa wasn’t nearly as popular as it is today. Much like most platforms, it also holds licenses for a long list of popular titles among manhwa aficionados, and it also includes a toggle button to include or exclude mature content.

Regarding payment, Netcomics works a bit differently. You can rent chapters by purchasing coins, which ends up being the cheaper option since the chapters are much more affordable than on many other platforms listed here. Alternatively, you can buy chapters using more coins. However, some titles are free, and new chapters are released for free every 24 hours.

WebComics logo with a drawing of a lady from their youtube channel

WebComics is also a classic in the comic stratosphere. Let’s be real, we’ve all gone through the phase where all we read were stories on WebComics and WEBTOON, and there’s a reason for that — they are the most family-friendly and affordable options for manhwa readers on a budget. Aside from having a ginormous library, WebComics offers one of the largest selections of free webtoons out there. However, if you want to access even more stories on the site, WebComics also provides a subscription-based alternative.

6 Places Where You Can Read Manhwa

Do you want to read manhwa but don't know where to start? Here are 6 platforms where you can find some of the best titles (legally)!

When it comes to Asian comics, manga gets the most attention. Naruto , My Hero Academia , Demon Slayer —chances are you’ve heard of at least one of these titles if you’re a sequential art fan. But there are plenty of other Asian countries that create their own comics. Case in point: manhwa from South Korea. If you’ve never read manhwa, don’t worry. Now’s the best time to become a manhwa reader.

A few manhwa series were licensed by North American companies during the manga boom of the early 2000s. The market contraction in the late 2000s saw these series enter licensing limbo. In the years since, manhwa has shifted from print to digital. Today, we more commonly know manhwa as webtoons. If you’d like to learn more about manhwa and webtoons, Rioter Christine wrote this great introduction .

Given the transition to an online format, there are several manhwa apps and readers that let you read titles. Legally, even! Like with manga, there are many less-than-legal places that let you read manhwa, but let’s support the original creators. Some of these webtoon apps and reader sites let you access series for free, so there’s no excuse.

Tapas (Android, iOS, Browser)

Tapas calls itself the YouTube of Comics. I’ll let you decide if that’s accurate. Tapas features a wide variety of series, separated by genre to make discovery easy. And if you want something spicy, they also have a mature section. The site offers a good mix of free-to-read and premium series. For the premium series, you can read the first few chapters for free but anything beyond that will cost you “ink,” which can be bought with cold hard money or earned by watching videos via the mobile app.

Webtoons (Android, iOS, Browser)

When I think of places to read manhwa, Webtoons is the first one to come to mind. Look at the name! Many popular K-Dramas like Cheese in the Trap or the highly anticipated True Beauty started their lives as Webtoons comics. All series on Webtoons are free to read, but if you can’t wait, you can buy coins to pay for early access to new chapters. Believe me, I understand. Because Webtoons are optimized for reading on your mobile phone, marathoning an entire series in a single afternoon is easy.

Tappytoon (Android, iOS, Browser)

Welcome to the home of the massively popular Solo Leveling series. Tappytoon follows a familiar format. You can browse series by genre or recent updates. Mature titles are found under a separate category. Like other platforms, you can read a few sample chapters before using tokens to access the rest of a series. Some titles operate under a “Time Till Free” model where you must wait at least 24 hours before you can read the next chapter. It makes marathoning a series difficult, but it’s a budget-friendly option. (If you’re not a fan of reading manhwa via an app, no worries. Some North American publishers are licensing titles for print release. You can expect Solo Leveling from Yen Press next year, for example. And if you’re already an existing Solo Leveling fan, check out this list of recommendations .)

Lezhin Comics (Android, iOS, Browser)

Lezhin calls itself publisher of premium webtoons—the idea here being that by following a premium model, it gives creators more creative freedom with the types of series they tell. As a result, many of Lezhin’s most famous series—like Killing Stalking and Painter of the Night —fall in the mature category. The number of sample chapters you can read before having to pay varies. Sometimes you can read as many as seven chapters. Like Tappytoon, Lezhin now offers select series under a “Wait Until Free” model.

Toomics (Browser)

Toomics is a newer platform in the webtoon world. So much so that their FAQ assures visitors it’s a legal site that pays its creators. Like other platforms, Toomics allows manhwa readers to browse via genre or update. A nice feature is that you can also view a schedule of when new releases are scheduled to drop. Users can purchase coins to buy chapters or can opt for a monthly subscription that gives unlimited access. Depending on how voracious a reader you are, the latter might be the smarter choice.

Netcomics (Android, iOS, Browser)

Netcomics offers a selection of both manhwa and manga. Unlike the other sites featured here, you have the option to rent titles. It’s cheaper than buying chapters outright, but you must read them within 72 hours, after which they expire. If you’re a fast reader who stays on top of your reading list, it’s a great option.

Hope that was helpful in guiding you through the various platforms where you can read manhwa. If you need some manhwa recommendations, here are some suggestions . If you’re new to reading Asian comics on apps and want more options, here are some manga platforms to check out .

20 Viral Hit (2020)

Written by taejun pak and illustrated by kim junghyun.

Viral hit main promotional poster featuring the main cast

The best part about Viral Hit for readers who enjoy it is that while it's adored on Webtoon, it's not even the most well-regarded work by its writer, Taejun Pak. Also known as How to Fight , Viral Hit follows Hobin Yu, the last person any reader might expect to create a thriving NewTube channel about fighting due to his small stature and meek personality as a bullied student. Still, Viral Hit defies all expectations and creates a compelling, exciting experience readers crave until its completion.

Viral Hit defies typical shonen conventions and is an engaging read due to Hobin's use of shonen tropes, including being unusually resilient and having a high pain threshold , which enable him to outlast his opponents. Additionally, Hobin's adaptability is a compelling factor in his development as a fighter, gradually empowering him to take on fighters and athletes of increasingly higher skill levels. It also helps that Viral Hit has an anime recently aired over the Spring 2024 season for fans craving more manhwa adaptations.

19 Noblesse (2014)

Written by jeho son and illustrated by kwangsu lee.

Noblesse takes off Cadis Etrama di Raizel, better known simply as Rai, wakes up from an 820-year-long slumber. The Noblesse is the title bestowed on the strongest of the Nobles and Rai is the only known person to bear the title. Unfortunately, the meaning of the title came to be muddled with Rai's disappearance, setting the stage for the story to take off with his return.

Having slumbered for so long, Rai is unfamiliar with the world he wakes up to, and mistaking a school uniform for the commonly worn attire of the age, Rai finds himself attending a high school run by Frankenstein, a devout follower of his who had been looking for him for ages. With over 500 episodes and a sequel series, Noblesse's story can feel drawn out at times but it still manages to be quite an enjoyable read full of exciting supernatural elements, great world-building, and equal amounts of action and comedy.

18 The God of High School (2014)

Written and illustrated by yongje park.

Yu Mira and Jin Mori God of High School

The God of High School is a cult-classic action series and a must-read for anyone new to the medium . The story revolves around Mori Jin, a seemingly regular high schooler who happens to be an expert at Taekwondo. Jin's skills draw the attention of the organizers of a mysterious tournament called "The God of High School" which pits high schoolers from all around the country against each other in an epic fighting tournament where the winner is promised one wish fulfilled by the organizers. Here, Jin encounters various kinds of fighters with varying styles and personalities, which makes every battle more unique than the last.

Of course, The God of High School eventually evolves into much more than a simple fighting tournament, but the story remains just as exciting and packed with action regardless. With well over 500 chapters, this series is the perfect binge-read with a vibrant art style that has held up for the last decade since its release.

17 Shotgun Boy (2021)

Written by kim carnby and illustrated by hongpil.

Shotgun Boy Manhwa

Shotgun Boy deals with some subject matter readers may find disturbing, particularly its violence and allusions to school shootings.

Standing as a prequel to Sweet Home , Shotgun Boy tackles similarly sensitive topics, including bullying and the looming possibility of its protagonist, Han Gyuhwan, being pushed to commit a massacre. However, for those familiar with Kim Carnby's other work, the deeply troubled protagonist is suddenly set up to be his world's savior as horrific monsters attack his classmates . Armed with a shotgun, Gyuhwan must fight back against these threats in a darkly entertaining thriller manhwa.

Delivered over a concise sixty-eight chapters, Shotgun Boy becomes far more than a creature feature by the end of its run . The series also follows characters who encounter violent threats from human assailants, along with other characters with seemingly transcendental powers. But the greatest thing about Shotgun Boy is that, if enjoyed in tandem with Sweet Home , it's like a chain of nightmares for readers seeking the best horror manhwa on Webtoon.

16 Marry My Husband (2022)

Written by sungsojak and adapted by lico.

jiwon and jihyuk from the cover of Marry My Husband

Marry My Husband is a classic revenge story with a beautiful romance to boot . The story revolves around Kang Ji-won, a cancer patient who discovers her husband cheating on her with her best friend when she has only six months left to live. To make matters worse, Ji-won finds out her husband and her best friend have been waiting for her to die to claim her life insurance. Ji-won's life is cut even shorter when she confronts the two and her husband ends up killing her in a rage.

However, when Ji-won opens her eyes she finds herself ten years in the past and vows to take revenge by having her best friend marry her lousy husband and suffer as she did with her abusive in-laws. Now with a new outlook on life, Ji-won discovers she has always been surrounded by people who care about her and even finds love along the way. Safe to say, Ji-won's revenge is incredibly satisfying and the heart-thumping romance between her and Ji-hyuk makes this manhwa all the more compelling.

Marry My Husband has also been adapted into a 16-episode Korean drama starring Park Min-young as Kang Ji-won.

15 The Greatest Estate Developer (2021)

Based on the original web novel by bk moon, adapted by lee hyunmin and illustrated by kim hyunsoo.

A man with glowing red eyes shows a demonic appearance.

The Greatest Estate Developer is among Webtoon's most entertaining isekai manhwa, which combines the well-loved trope of game mechanics with a healthy dose of comedy . The story revolves around Kim Suho, a regular civil engineer who finds himself transported into the medieval world of a novel as a useless side character named Lloyd Fronterra, who is known for being a drunken lout who brings ruin to his estate and his family. Lloyd is all but destined for a pathetic death; however, Suho makes up his mind to avoid this fate no matter what.

Thus, Suho begins to use his existing knowledge and skills to bring innovation to the world of the novel with only two goals in mind — to get rich, and to live an easy life. Of course, these goals end up being nearly impossible to achieve, but this is precisely where the fun of the story truly begins. The Greatest Estate Developer is charming and incredibly engaging with a surprisingly likable protagonist and a most absurd sense of humor that all together make this manhwa impossible to put down.

14 Purple Hyacinth (2019)

Written by ephemerys and illustrated by sophism.

Best Manhwa First Chapters Purple Hyacinth

Unlike its flowery name, Purple Hyacinth is a dark, mysterious tale full of murder, conspiracy, tragedy, and even romance . The story centers around Officer Lauren Sinclair, who has the unique ability to detect lies and has devoted every moment of her being to uncovering the truth behind an old tragedy that took away one of her dear friends. However, Lauren somehow ends up joining hands with the city's most dangerous assassin, Kieran White, who goes by the alias that makes up the name of the series.

Purple Hyacinth Trailer Thumbnail

Thus, Kieran and Lauren set out to unmask the criminal organization terrorizing the city of Ardhalis known as the Phantom Scythe. Despite beginning their partnership ready to kill each other at the slightest sign of betrayal, the two eventually forge a bond that threatens to grow into much more. Altogether, Lauren and Kieran's enticing enemies-to-lovers dynamic coupled with the enthralling mystery of the Phantom Scythe make Purple Hyacinth an absolute page-turner.

13 The Remarried Empress (2020)

Written by alphatart and illustrated by sumpul, the remarried empress (2020).

The Remarried Empress is a fantasy drama series beloved by many for its romantic art style and swoon-worthy love interest. The manhwa follows Empress Navier and her budding relationship with Prince Heinrey which takes off when her husband, the Emperor acquires a new mistress. Despite being simplistic, T he Remaried Empress's plot is far from predictable despite the very first chapter dropping the ball about the eventual divorce between the Empress and the Emperor and her subsequent marriage to the Prince. The story and art remain consistent in quality throughout, with each new character introduced adding depth to the plot.

The Empress herself is kind and capable, very much the typical strong female lead, but with an air of composure befitting her status. Her developing relationship with the mysterious Prince Heinrey amidst the underlying politics of high society and the ensuing melodrama brought about by the power-hungry mistress makes this manhwa an absolute page-turner.

12 See You In My 19th Life (2020)

Written and illustrated by lee hey.

See You In My 19th Life Ji-Eum watching over a sleeping Seo-Ha

See You in My 19th Life (2020)

See You in My 19th Life follows a girl who can remember all of her past lives. When she reincarnates for the nineteenth time, now known as Ban Jieum, she vows to find a boy named Mun Seoha she befriended as a child in her eighteenth life. As her relationship with Seoha develops, she unravels several mysteries including why her eighteenth life was cut short, why she can't seem to remember her first life, and what caused her to retain her memories in the first place.

While the concept of past lives is nothing new in manhwa, See You in My 19th Life certainly has a fresh take on reincarnation . The art is simple yet adorable and while the Netflix adaptation does mostly do the story justice, there are definitely some major differences that set the two apart that make the manhwa worth a read.

11 Bastard (2015)

Written by carnby kim and illustrated by youngchan hwan.

Bastard Jin Seon and Dongsoo

Bastard (2015)

Bastard is a thriller series that follows Jin Seon, a young boy whose father is a murderer. Following the death of his mother, Jin is forced into being an accomplice to these murders for fear of his father getting rid of him as well. That is until his father sets his sights on Yoon Kyun, a girl from school that Jin manages to befriend. Jin is forced to take a stand against his father and thus begins his journey to get stronger in order to break away from his father's influence.

While Bastard's art is simplistic, the muted sepia tones do a wonderful job of conveying the ominous atmosphere and mostly bleak tone. The author also does a great job of portraying the cold terrifying nature of the father with some panels being certifiably bone-chilling.

10 Hero Killer (2021)

Written by kkulbeol and illustrated by beolkkul.

Turning the world of heroes and villains on its head, the lead duo of Hero Killer is exactly as it sounds: two villains, the main character formerly hailing from the Nameless syndicate, and the deuteragonist leading that same group. Ihwa is a villain who wishes to avenge her sister, Yeon's death at the hands of the Hero Clan , who are more corrupt than their name suggests. Engen, the Smiling Man, saves Ihwa, the Hero Killer, while he uses her to strike against the Hero Clan and to investigate the circumstances of her sister's death.

Hero Killer is a prime example of the best revenge manhwa on Webtoon , with fantastically designed characters and a dark, compelling world with new chapters coming weekly. It's a violent spectacle of an action series, where its characters harness Gifts that grant them their powers in the series to fight and survive. While Engen's abilities and featured Gift are compelling, Ihwa boasts Gift absorption as her ability, being an edgier spin on Rogue, depending on the perspectives of the reader, creating exciting, unlimited potential for every chapter.

9 My In-Laws Are Obsessed With Me (2021)

Based on the original web novel by han yoon seol, adapted by seungu.

One fantastic hook of My In-Laws Are Obsessed With Me is that it has one of the best first chapters in manhwa history , playing up the sinister twist that leads to Pereshati Jahardt, an aristocrat heiress, betrayed by a family she loves and cruelly murdered . In typical manhwa trope fashion, she is resurrected and returned to the time before these events, where she decides who she must trust. This brings Pereshati to Therdeo Lapileon, a "bloodthirsty war fiend," giving early impressions of an enemies-to-lovers webtoon premise as she tries to marry into his family.

However, the Lapileon family has a bizarre curse, with each member using this to varying ends, including Therdeo seeing Pereshati's reaction once she's exposed. Learning about this introduces a new conflict on top of Pereshati's revenge quest against those who murdered her the first time. The result is one of Webtoon's most compelling, best manhwa experiences , with an attractive and compelling male and female lead duo.

8 Lookism (2022)

Written and illustrated by taejun pak, lookism (2022).

In terms of premise, Lookism is as unique as it gets. After being bullied relentlessly, seventeen-year-old Daniel transfers to another school hoping to turn over a new leaf and maybe even make some friends. In a mysterious turn of events, he wakes up one night with a tall, fit body and a face handsome enough to make heads turn. However, to his horror, he discovers he still has his old body and has somehow been split into two bodies that he can switch between. While one is awake, the other sleeps.

The series as a whole is a critique of beauty standards and the attractiveness bias that pervades society while also managing to be lighthearted and entertaining. All in all, Lookism is definitely worth checking out, especially for those looking for more after watching the Netflix adaptation .

7 Sweet Home (2017)

Written by kim carnby and illustrated by hwang young-chan.

Being the most recognizable horror manhwa available on Webtoon and yet another stellar work from Kim Carnby, Sweet Home's legacy is truly impressive when weighed against other series in general. It depicts a similarly troubled protagonist like that of Shotgun Boy , with Sweet Home's hero beginning his journey at the lowest point of his life before hell erupts on earth all around him. The chaos of Sweet Home builds quickly, getting readers hooked instantly thanks to its fascinating, nightmarish premise, a fittingly bleak color grading scheme, and some truly horrific monster design.

Cha Hyun-soo is the star introduced at the start of Sweet Home , whose strained family bond is abruptly cut short after a tragic car accident, after which he is withdrawn, despondent, and suicidal. The terror of a monsterization crisis erupting around his apartment complex, along with Hyun-soo's resistance to monsterization giving him unique abilities, prompts the boy to become the story's survivor-turned-hero . Sweet Home is not only one of the best horror manhwa, but one of the best webcomics on Webtoon, and has a popular live-action Netflix adaptation.

6 Wind Breaker (2013)

Written and illustrated by yongseok jo.

Wind Breaker

Wind Breaker (2013)

Wind Breaker centers around Jay, an extremely talented biker and the student president of Sunny High. Coming from a family of doctors Jay spends all his time focusing on studying with biking providing a brief respite outside of academics. However, Jay's life takes a turn when he is forced to join the Hummingbird Crew, the school's biking team.

Full of exciting races and well-developed characters, this series is the perfect blend of action, humor, and slice-of-life with grungy, trendy art that only gets better. Moreover, the author displays extensive knowledge about biking techniques and a contagious passion for biking which all add to the appeal. Windbreaker is perfect for Webtoon fans wanting a little more sports action out of their manhwa .

5 Tower of God (2010)

Written and illustrated by siu, tower of god (2010).

One of Webtoon's most popular manhwa series of all time , Tower of God by SIU follows Bam, a young boy who enters a tower that's said to fulfill the wishes of anyone who reaches the top. However, Bam's motivations are different from the rest as he enters the tower solely to find a girl named Rebecca, a dear companion who once kept him company in the dark cavern under the tower, told him stories about the beautiful world outside, and taught him everything he knows. In order to make his way up the tower, Bam is forced to complete a dangerous challenge at every level. Luckily, he finds several companions along the way who help him along his journey.

While the plot sounds generic, much like any fantasy series out there, Tower of God offers much more in terms of world-building, the universal themes it explores, and how well it fleshes out each of its side characters alongside the protagonist. While Tower of Gods' style leaves much to be desired at first, it improves exponentially as the story progresses and should not be a reason to shy away from the series.

4 The Horizon (2021)

Written and illustrated by jh.

The Horizon

The Horizon (2021)

Set in a post-apocalyptic landscape ravaged by war and ideology, The Horizon follows a young boy and girl struggling to survive in a kill-or-be-killed world that forces them to lose the innocence of childhood. The two children are motivated to move forward in hopes of finding a safe haven. Along the way, the boy is confronted with the choice of whether to abandon his humanity for the sake of survival and must decide how far he is willing to go in order to protect his dear companion.

The series stands out among other Webtoon manhwa due to its surprisingly dark, serious tone and the lack of color throughout the series which represents how the relationship between the girl and the boy is the only spot of color in their otherwise dark, dull lives. Although there is very little dialogue or narration the rugged art style is highly evocative and haunting. In all, The Horizon is a deep, heartbreaking story about finding hope even in the darkest of moments .

Solo Leveling, Under the Oak Tree, and Omniscient Reader

Visual design can be the main reason a story pulls in a reader, which is why the best manhwa art styles make their series so fascinating.

3 The Boxer (2020)

The Boxer

The Boxer (2020)

From the same author as The Horizon , The Boxer is far from a simple sports Webtoon. The series starts with the renowned Coach K recruiting the prodigy Yu with the goal of coaching him to be boxing's next big threat. Although Yu starts off as the protagonist, he is hardly the central focus. Instead, the story explores each of its side characters in great depth, helping set up the contrast between Yu and everyone else.

The story eventually explores Yu's traumatic past and his struggle to find meaning in fighting, violence, perseverance, ambition, and life itself. In that sense, boxing isn't the central focus of the series either, but rather the backdrop against which the author explores deeper issues. While the plot can get a little slow and the fight scenes can get a tad repetitive, The Boxer does tell an excellent story and explores several serious themes with charming character designs and well-handled character arcs that make it worth sticking through.

2 Eleceed (2019)

Written by jeho son and illustrated by zhena.

Eleceed Jiwoo and Kayden

Eleceed (2019)

Eleceed takes off when Jiwoo, a boy with cat-like reflexes and speed meets Kayden, a dangerous assassin stuck in the body of a fat orange tabby cat. What ensues is a charming action-comedy with plenty of cat-related gags and shenanigans. Moreover, Kayden and Jiwoo's contrasting personalities make for an interesting dynamic with both characters being extremely likable. While Jiwoo is chatty, kind, and selfless, Kayden is every bit the prideful loner, not unlike a cat much to his irony.

Overall, Eleceed makes for a fun casual read that will leave Webtoon readers chuckling after every episode . Not only is the art undeniably stunning with no shortage of attractive characters, but the series also handles its characters and their development really well. All things considered, the series is highly entertaining and full of silly antics, with humor that hits the mark every time, stellar action, and lots of cats.

1 Omniscient Reader (2020)

Written by singnsong and illustrated by sleepy-c, omniscient reader (2020).

Omniscient Reader follows Kim Dokja as his favorite novel suddenly becomes a reality after releasing its final chapter, The world is plunged into chaos with monsters and mythical creatures of varying kinds making an appearance. Rather than being plunged into the world of his favorite novel in typical isekai fashion, Omniscient Reader reinvents the isekai trope with Dokja watching as his favorite novel takes shape around him. However, Dokja has an advantage. As the only reader who read along faithfully till the end of the novel, only he knows the ending as well as what to expect and how to survive in this post-apocalyptic world.

Although the premise of the series isn't anything new, watching Dokja rise to the top is addicting even more so because of the video game-like format. Moreover, the series has beautiful art and stunning fight sequences with a plot that only gets more intriguing as it progresses. All of this adds up to make Omniscient Reader Webtoon's best manhwa .

The 30 best manhwa of all time.

The 30 Best Manhwa Of All Time

“Manhwa” (만화, 漫畵) is the Korean word for comic or print cartoon, much like the Japanese “ manga ” and the Chinese “manhua”. And while these three popular media share some historical origins in the early 20th century when Japan occupied much of East Asia, they are today different for more than just the nationality of their artists.

Part of what defines the Korean manhwa, apart from being read left-to-right like in English and the frequent use of vibrant colors, is the emphasis on online publications. Manhwa’s boom in the 2010s came hand in hand with the rise of free online comic-sharing sites like LINE Webtoon and Lezhin. Today, there are over 15 million daily readers on the LINE app alone, and “webtoon” has become a catch-all term for online comics produced both by well-known artists and users themselves. Manhwas are now almost exclusively published and read in this format, continously exploring new creative horizons.

With that in mind, we’re here to offer you a guide to this expanding world! From high politics to LGBTQ+ stories , all presented with astonishing artistry, here are the 30 best manhwas sorted by genre (though many of these defy simple categorization).

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the number of great manga out there, you can also take our 10-second quiz below to narrow it down quickly and get a personalized manga recommendation 😉

Romance/Drama

1. true beauty by yaongyi.

Status: Ongoing

good websites for manhwa

It follows Lim Jugyeong, an awkward teen who’s picked on by the popular girls at school for her looks and unconventional love for horror manga and heavy metal. After one particularly humiliating experience, Jugyeong begins to binge watch beauty bloggers at the advice of well-meaning netizens. By the time high school starts, she has transformed herself into a goddess of beauty who instantly becomes popular. She’s ready to go to great lengths to maintain her perfect facade, all of which comes under threat when the most handsome boy at school sees her bare-faced at a local manga shop. Combining lighthearted comedy with a much more serious discussion of contemporary beauty standards, True Beauty insightfully captures both the painful lows and the euphoric highs of our high school days, and what it means to truly love oneself.

2. Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe

good websites for manhwa

Based on the classic myth ‘The Abduction of Persephone’, but transposed to a modern fantasy setting complete with modern technologies, Lore Olympus kicks off with Hades attending a party at Zeus’s place. At the party, he notices Persephone’s beauty and makes some fateful comments that set off a chain of events fuelled by gossip, lies, jealousy, and forbidden love. Through stylish and immersive visuals, Smythe’s delicate and nuanced retelling deals with heavy themes such as sexual assault, harrassment, abuse, and trauma without ever romanticizing it, nor condemning her characters to eternal victimhood.

3. Let’s Play by Mongie

If we’re ranking manhwas by popularity, Let’s Play by Mongie is another one to beat — and for good reason! With its light touch, humor, and tantalizing romance, this modern-day Pride and Prejudice -esque story about a game developer and a famous streamer will have you hooked from the get-go.

Sam is young, single, and on the verge of fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a game developer. There’s just one obstacle standing in her way: when she launches her first game, a popular gaming personality gives it a scathing review. And of course that isn’t the end of it — the reviewer turns out to be her new neighbor as well! Capturing gaming, meme-culture, and social anxiety with warmth and accuracy, Let’s Play is a true gem which serves plenty of plot with a side of adorable doggos to boot.

And to really keep readers on their toes, Quimchee throws in a good amount of reflective moments to balance the humor, too.

Centering around Shin-ae, a girl whose life has consisted of one misfortune after the other, I Love Yoo is all about learning to trust again. Shin-ae wants nothing to do with other people and certainly not with romance, but fate has other plans. Her plan to live life as a near-recluse is spoiled when she accidentally bumps into a stranger and ruins his clothes. As a result, she’s drawn into a love-triangle involving him and his estranged brother . The story that follows is delightfully addictive, and it’s only more so given the atmospheric soundtrack that comes with each chapter!

5. Yeon Lok Heun by Han Su Yeong

Status: Ongoing

good websites for manhwa

The leading lady Yeon Lok Heun has managed to hide the fact that she is in fact a lady since early childhood. She was thus able to learn both martial and spiritual arts growing up — two sets of skills she will put to use as she heads towards the imperial palace to clear her father’s name. At the palace, she meets the young emperor Garyun who promises to save her father in exchange for her lifelong servitude. Continuing to conceal her gender, she travels the empire solving problems of an otherworldly nature. But one question hangs in the air: how long can she keep up the charade?

6. Cheese in The Trap by Soonkki

Status: Completed

The 2010 romantic drama Cheese In the Trap is among the OG legends of webtoons, and it’s continuing to touch the hearts of millions of readers year after year. And if you won’t take it from us, then know that this evergreen story has seen both a movie adaptation and a live-action drama. Needless to say, it’s a manhwa you simply cannot miss.

Cheese in The Trap follows Hong Seol, a hardworking and humble student who is returning to her studies after a long break as the recipient of a prestigious university scholarship. There, she gets involved with a senior — Yoo Jung — who would have received the scholarship if it weren’t for her, and her already difficult life seems to take a turn for the worse. To everyone else, Jung is known as Mr. Perfect, and he has no qualms about manipulating his admirers to get what he wants. By giving Seol his attention, he unwittingly makes her the target of envy and malice, threatening to disrupt her precarious balance and throwing her right into a love triangle that will tear at the reader’s heart strings.

7. Shall We Have Dinner Tonight by Park See-In

good websites for manhwa

Do-Hee Woo and Hae-Gyeong Kim didn’t expect to bump into each other when they decided to try dining alone at a restaurant. And they certainly didn’t think they’d form an instant connection. Making a deal to meet up and eat together on a weekly basis, their friendship quickly becomes deeper as they help one another heal from past heartbreaks. The scaled-down plot leaves plenty of room for Park See-In to really explore the strengths and insecurities of these two characters, as well as the conflicts that arise between them. Bringing it back to the basics and stripping away all the special effects, this is a refreshingly honest look at human relationships.

8. Your Throne by SAM

Bridging the romance and fantasy genres, artist and author SAM delivers thrilling intrigue and high stakes every Saturday with Your Throne , whose popularity in Korea has quickly led to an official English translation.

Starring Medea Solon and Psyche Callista, two main characters who are both vying for the position of Crown Princess of the Vasilions Empire, Your Throne is replete with political struggles which only get more complicated when they accidentally switch bodies! Having lost her place next to the Crown Prince Eros, Medea is determined to do whatever it takes to reclaim  what is rightfully hers. Fairytale visuals meet fantastical worldbuilding as SAM keeps her subscribers on tenterhooks in this deservedly popular ‘toon.

Horror/Suspense

9. hive by kyusam kim.

good websites for manhwa

When the world teeters on the edge of an apocalypse brought in the form of giant, oxygen-doped killer bees who are seeking to reverse the food-chain, mid-level manager Lee is forced to abandon everything in order to save his family, as well as humanity. Loosely based on the science of prehistoric creatures and climate change, Hive pitches modern, technology-dependent humans against nature in a high-stake battle for survival. As it’s dedicated readership will testify, it’s a wild ride from start to finish that will make your skin crawl. And if you can’t get enough of the buzz of this bug-invasion, make sure to check out the two prequels The Dog Man and Dead Queen !

10. Dead Days by DEY

No manhwa list is complete without some zombie horror with a bit of gore. Dead Days by DEY doesn’t mince its words as it proceeds to deliver high octane action within 62 episodes. And baked into all the action are some big questions about the will to live, human instincts, and selfish desires.

When Dead Days kicks off, the zombie virus has already broken out and we now follow the survivors of the resulting apocalypse. As zombies roam the streets, survivors are trapped within their homes, unable to leave for fear of their own family-members-turned-predators. With scratches at the door, two high schoolers — strangers to each other — are stuck in opposite apartments and must figure out a way to communicate and survive until help arrives. Beyond fulfilling the expected requirements of any zombie story worth its salt, Dead Days ' stunning artwork, its attention to detail, and its round characters elevate it to immortal heights.

11. Sweet Home by Carnby Kim and Youngchan Hwang

Some of you might recognize Sweet Home from its monster-slaying adaptation on Netflix or the names of the creators for their equally successful psychological thriller Bastard . One thing that is certain is that you’ve come to the right place for some top-quality, hair raising suspense, full of grit.

Don’t let the title deceive you, because this manhwa is anything but sweet: the protagonist, Cha Hyun-Soo is a high school student who is suffering from the loss of his family and struggling with suicidal thoughts. Adding another layer to these weighty topics, the residents of Hyun-Soo’s apartment complex must band together in order to survive a monster apocalypse, where people turn into monsters that reflect their deepest, darkest desires. In Sweet Home , Carnby Kim and Youngchan Hwang truly tap into an old truth: the scariest monsters are often the ones hiding in our own heads.

12. Distant Sky by Inwan Youn and Sunhee Kim

good websites for manhwa

The deliberate use of shadow and light matches the mood of the storytelling perfectly from the get-go: readers first get to encounter a boy as he wakes up in a quiet building, surrounded by dead people. Outside, Gangnam is shrouded in complete darkness — there’s no electricity nor any stars in the sky — and the entirety of Seoul seems deserted. He must venture out now in the hopes of finding more survivors to this mysterious disaster. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

Fantasy/Supernatural

13. catharsis by ahniki.

And if you can’t get enough of monster-fighting action but prefer low-key horror that’s actually heavier on the fantasy side, Catharsis by Ahniki is an exquisitely drawn manhwa you should immediately check out. Readers be warned: you’ll be hooked from the first slide.

Following Leon — a boy with the unusual ability of being able to see voices in terms of colors and whose dreams are beginning to come to life — Catharsis operates on the edge between nightmare and reality. When he learns about an organization called "Catharsis" that fights monsters which feed on fear, his life is forever altered. Together with Leon, readers will get a chance to see fear and courage in a whole other light. So come for the slaying, and stay for characters you can’t help but to root for in this display of epic storytelling.

14. The Gamer by Sangyoung Seong and Sang-A

Loosely drawing from role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and the fantasy series Discworld, The Gamer is about, well, gaming. From its first episode in 2013, The Gamer is a long-standing crowd favorite among both actual gamers and those who simply prefer to read about it.

The first season starts off with Jihan Han, a normal high school student who, instead of being drawn into a game, discovers that his own world is taking on video-game qualities. But not everyone can see when stats and levels start appearing next to people — only a select few are able to navigate this new world.Being one of the special few, Jihan must juggle regular homework with a quest to exterminate a monster and “level up in life”.

15. The God of High School by Jongje Park

good websites for manhwa

Set in three different realms — the realms of humans, demons, and gods — the story follows Mori Jin, a 17-year old martial artist who is invited to take part in a tournament called “The God of High School.'' Using “borrowed power” from the gods, participants compete at a regional level, gradually progressing to a national championship from which three representatives will be selected to compete for Korea on the world stage. The winner will receive anything they want from the host corporation — a corporation that may or may not be plotting something beyond Mori’s wildest imagination. With lovable characters, a well-developed world and magic system, and plenty of kick-ass action scenes, this manhwa is sure to hit the spot for those of you looking for your next binge-able read.

16. DICE by Hyunseok Yun

With over 1.2 million subscribers, DICE by Hyunseok Yun is one we’d hate to miss. Hyunseok Yun has taken a tried and tested premise — a zero-to-hero story with a touch of magic and the supernatural — and given it a refreshing spin, completed by a wonderful cast of characters.

Much like Lim Jugyeong in True Beauty , the main character of DICE , Dongtae, is a bread-shuttle for his classmate — he’s literally forced to do snack runs for his classmates and continuously pushed to the bottom of the barrel. He’s weak, has low grades, and is utterly friendless. That is, until he meets the new transfer student, Taebin, who lets him use his magical dice that can give the player strength, intelligence, and beauty. But as Dongtae rejoices at the prospect of winning his crush’s attention and climbing the social ladder, word gets out about the magical cube, complicating Dontae’s life even further. Accompanying this enticing storyline, the artwork perfectly balances a sense of mystery with straight and clear delivery for an exciting reading experience.

17. Solo Leveling by Chu-Gong and Dubu

good websites for manhwa

When portals that connect the human and monster worlds begin to appear, a portion of humanity (known as hunters) starts to develop superhuman powers to preserve the balance of the world. Sung Jin-Woo, the protagonist of Solo Leveling , has the lowest and weakest rank of all; yet he finds himself trapped in a dungeon and must fight together with his companions to escape. But that’s not all — Jin-woo’s powers have not reached their full potential just yet, making this a particularly addictive take on the classic hero's journey .

18. Kubera by Currygom

For some otherworldly female-driven fantasy, look no further than Kubera by Currygom — a vibrant story about resilience, vengeance, and reconciliation. With minimalist, easy-to-follow artwork, the thrilling and action-packed narration gets to take the lead, resulting in a page-turning read.

When the eponymous Kubera loses her entire village to the monster Sura on her 16th birthday, she is made both homeless and orphaned. Salvation arrives in the form of a magician named Asha, who suspects that the name ‘Kubera’ belies an age-old prophecy, and who takes her on a journey where magicians and humans must face off against Gods and Suras.

19. Tower of God by SIU

Tower of God by SIU was an instant hit upon publication, largely due to its unique characters and endlessly complex villains. Though you can expect an exploration of human desires, greed, power, and revenge, this is also a heartfelt depiction of friendship and the lengths that we will go to to protect it. And if you’re a fan of anime, there’s an excellent adaptation available with an equally excellent original soundtrack. A full house, some would say.

As for the plot, it’s almost better to know as little as possible about this one before going in so that you can uncover it piece by piece. But to give a basic premise, there’s a Tower of God, wherein your wildest dreams can come true at the risk of great peril. Our main character Bam, finds himself trapped underneath the tower with his childhood friend Rachel and when she is drawn into the tower, Bam too must begin to climb in order to save her from its enticing and corruptive power.

20. Noblesse by Jeho Son and Kwangsu Lee

Whoever said that vampire stories are going out of style clearly haven’t come across Noblesse by Jeho Son and Kwangsu Lee. With a big cast of charming characters, this tale can turn the most vampire-adverse readers into loyal followers, proving once and for all that these immortal creatures are truly here to stay.

When vampire Rai wakes up from a 820-year slumber, he finds himself in a new and changed world. In order to learn the ropes, he starts his new life as a high school student at a school founded by his servant, Frankenstein. Looking forward to living peacefully, he is disappointed to say the least when a mysterious organization called the Union starts to attack his mortal friends.

21. The Strongest Florist by Hyun Hoo Joo and Kumtata

good websites for manhwa

Jaeho has a fearsome presence to say the least; with a body built like a tank and an intimidating scowl, his overbearing father expects nothing but a career in MMA fighting from him. Meanwhile, all Jaeho wants is to become a florist. To escape his father’s ambitions, he enters into a virtual reality game called “New World”, where he might be able to fulfil his wholesome dream. Upon befriending the in-game AI elves, he’s given an unprecedented quest that only he can fulfil. With its colorful visuals and lighthearted content, this one is a real happy-pill of a read, served with a side of action.

22. Dallae by Choonae

Dallae is a wholesome manhwa about cats and lost high school loves — a perfect palate cleanser between martial art and vampires. Or, you know, just a straight-up good story in its own right. And Choonae certainly knows how to deliver both cuteness overload and punches to the heart in rapid succession.

When Bo-eun finds a cat in an azalea field, she dubs her Dallae (Korean for Azalea) and brings her new companion home. But Dallae’s arrival coincides with recurring dreams about Bo-eun’s high school friend Saeyeon. As Dallae comes and goes as she pleases, Bo-eun begins to suspect that her feline friend is hiding a secret which is somehow related to Saeyeon and she must try to unravel her feelings in order to find out the truth.

23. Heesu in Class 2 by Lily

good websites for manhwa

Heesu has a secret crush on his best friend Chanyeong, and he knows it’ll never be returned. Even so, Heesu’s happy to just be around him, talking about his girl problems and supporting his sporting achievements, being known to others only as “Chanyeong’s friend”. So it’s as surprising to Heesu as everyone else when a rumor about Heesu’s ability to give accurate love advice starts to spread, placing him at the center of everyone’s attention. With simple, adorable art Heesu in Class 2 captures the innocence of first love and the confusion of high school, as the relationship dynamics shift and the characters continue to learn about themselves and each other.

24. Unrequited Love Skill by Teunteun and Carbonara

Flipping the script on Heesu in Class 2 , Unrequited Love Skill is a story about friendship, love,  and complicated relationship statuses, which tenderly captures the spectrum that sexuality operates on.

Yuna has known that she’s gay since high school when she started to develop romantic feelings for her friend, Dahye. Dahye, on the other hand, is certain of her love for men, even though all of her crushes have come to nothing — the boys and men she’s attracted to all end up falling in love with Yuna instead. Despite everything, the two have put their friendship first; or at least until Yuna decides that it might finally be time to move on. The balance is thrown, and the two have to ask themselves where to draw the line between friendship and something else.

25. Always Human by walkingnorth

good websites for manhwa

Always Human is a story about nanobots, genetic engineering and about falling in love. In a world where people apply fancy mods to change their appearances and functions, our main character Sunati can’t help but notice a girl at the bus stop who never changes. Like everyone else, Sunati is constantly changing herself and admires the bravery and confidence she sees in this other girl’s more natural look. But as she musters the courage to approach her, she soon finds out that things are not always what they seem. Complete with an original soundtrack and vibrant colors, Always Human is an innocent story about getting to know the true nature of ourselves and the people around us.

26. Semantic Error by Jeosuri

good websites for manhwa

Chu Sangwoo is a Computer Science major who would love to get through university on his own. But forced to partake in a liberal arts group project with a bunch of freeloaders, his rigid personality is put to the test. Having done all the work on his own, he rightfully decides to remove his classmates’ names from the hand-in, putting a spoke in the wheel for Design major and campus star Jang Jaeyoung, as well as his plans to go on a study-abroad program. Their paths continue to cross in a hilariously infuriating way, bugging up Sangwoo’s perfect world.

27. The Boxer by JH

More than 7 million readers have enjoyed JH's explosive sports-meets-action-meets-thriller manhwa, The Boxer , updating regularly every Thursday. The premise is simple, but who doesn’t love a good Rocky Balboa underdog, striving to rise to the top?

In The Boxer , a young man with raw talent asks himself whether he has what it takes to make it to the top. There’s more to it than just physical strength and endurance — it will take precision, a whole lot of heart, and a dogged determination to achieve perfection. It’s the test of a lifetime, and readers will be knocked out by JH’s ability to capture the sport of boxing in superfluid detail, while making them root for the dynamic cast of characters.

28. Wind Breaker by Yongseok Jo

good websites for manhwa

The main character of Wind Breaker , Jay, not only gets perfect grades but is also the student body president. He spends his time focusing on his studies and is on a straight and narrow path to what he has been taught is success. But that’s only until he is roped into joining the school’s biking team — the Hummingbird Crew — where he discovers that there is more to life than textbooks and equations. With sleek artwork and a seriously addictive storyline, Wind Breaker will have you racing through the chapters while delivering a healthy motivational boost to brighten anyone’s day.

29. Just for Kicks by Josie Fox

Sports are often a win-or-lose game filled with pressure to perform, but it can also be a lighthearted past-time, a chance to move and sweat, to eat and laugh. Josie Fox’s Just For Kicks is exactly the kind of easy-going, comedic celebration of sports which foregoes the high achievements in favor of low-commitment and pure enjoyment.

At a university Taekwondo club, a group of amateur athletes train together and share events from their daily lives. The sweet, bite-sized chapters filled with simple illustrations are perfect for when you need a quick pick-me-up during your lunch break or afternoon tea. And if you ever needed confirmation that anyone can get enthusiastic about sports, this is it!

30. Plum by Samkimart

good websites for manhwa

VIZ typically releases the most recent chapters of ongoing series like My Hero Academia, Dragon Ball Super , and One Piece for free shortly after they're published in Japan. These free chapters are available for a limited time — usually around a week — after which they are archived and accessible through a paid subscription. This model is great for staying up-to-date with the latest releases without any cost.

The platform typically offers extensive free previews, up to 60 pages per volume , allowing a deep dive before purchase. Additionally, the Viz Manga App for mobile provides a vast selection of titles for just $2 a month. There’s also a 7-day free trial, which I used to read the entirety of Urusei Yatsura .

You can read many free volumes without needing to sign in. With its user-friendly interface, VIZ serves as an excellent gateway for both new and seasoned manga enthusiasts.

2. Book Walker — Save Big on Manga and Ebooks When Signing Up

  • Types of content covered: Mixed genres, including shōnen, seinen, and simulpubs
  • Ad Supported: No
  • Registration required: Yes, for both free and premium content
  • Availability: Worldwide, with some regional restrictions

Book Walker offers substantial discounts on initial purchases upon registration, allowing you to rapidly expand your digital library. The platform frequently features promotions like discounts, coin-back offers, and unique perks such as autographed illustrations or exclusive book covers. Using such promotions, I managed to purchase all 8 volumes of Lucky Star at half price.

A screenshot showing Book Walker's registration page

The service offers a broad assortment of manga and light novels, including exclusive titles and special editions not available elsewhere. It also releases chapters simultaneously with its debut in Japan . You can even pre-order unreleased comics and download chapters for offline reading.

Signing up for a free account on Book Walker allows you to access their library, but full access to all content, including complete volumes and series, typically requires purchasing the items. The free account lets you buy books, take advantage of promotions, and read any available free samples or promotional content that usually changes every month.

3. Manga Plus — Immediate Access to New Chapters Directly from Japan

  • Types of content covered: Mainly shōnen and seinen hits from Shueisha
  • Ad Supported: Yes, free access with ads
  • Registration required: No registration is required to access the free content, but creating an account can provide additional features
  • Availability: Global except for Japan, China, and South Korea

Manga Plus by Shueisha allows you to read the latest chapters from Weekly Shonen Jump simultaneously with their release in Japan. The platform features popular titles like Jujutsu Kaisen and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure , available in various languages.

On their website and mobile app, you can read the first 3 and the latest 3 chapters of the ongoing series for free . Some series may occasionally offer all chapters for free, viewable once per chapter. Additionally, Manga Plus provides a selection of older manga titles that are available at no cost.

If you're interested in a paid subscription, the service offers 2 plans — a standard one for $1.99 a month with over 6,000 chapters of the current series and a deluxe plan for $4.99 a month that includes over 15,000 chapters from both ongoing and completed series.

4. Kodansha — Access a Vast Library of Award-Winning Manga

  • Types of content covered: Extensive range including shōnen ( Attack on Titan ), shōjo ( Cardcaptor Sakura ), seinen (Ajin: Demi-Human ), and more
  • Ad Supported: No, relies on sales and subscriptions
  • Registration required: Yes, for purchasing and subscriptions
  • Availability: Global, with some regional licensing restrictions

Kodansha stands out as a treasure trove for manga enthusiasts , offering a digital platform to purchase and enjoy a broad spectrum of seminal manga titles, from the intense action of Attack on Titan to the magical adventures of Cardcaptor Sakura. These series are renowned for their high-quality translations and synchronization with Japan's publication schedules, ensuring you're always up-to-date.

A screenshot showing Kodansha's home page

While Kodansha’s manga is primarily available through third-party digital bookstores, signing up for accounts on these platforms often unlocks additional perks like free access to first chapters , the ability to save reading progress, and easier purchasing processes. Kodansha provides both subscription services and individual purchases to cater to different reading preferences, ensuring timely releases and high-quality translations.

It also offers the K MANGA app, which allows reading on mobile devices , though I found its 1 free chapter per day limit a bit annoying. That said, the service does offer an amazing selection of titles to read, and there’s even a reward system that lets you buy manga using in-app points.

5. INKR — A Curated Selection of Free and Paid Niche Manga From Various Publishers

  • Types of content covered: Diverse catalog including manga, manhua, and manhwa across all genres, such as shōnen, shōjo, seinen, and yaoi.
  • Ad Supported: Yes, a freemium model with optional ad-free subscription
  • Registration required: Yes, for free and premium content
  • Availability: Global, though subject to licensing restrictions

Formerly known as Manga Rock, INKR offers a centralized platform for a wide variety of comics, not just from Japan, but also from South Korea, China, and beyond. INKR stands out for its commitment to content diversity and its robust set of features that enhance the user experience.

INKR's interface is designed to be user-friendly and responsive, featuring customizable reading options to tailor the visual presentation to your preferences. A standout feature is the chat function, allowing users to discuss their favorite series and chapters in real time . Plus, the platform includes a unique search function that recommends manga based on your current mood.

The service operates on a subscription model, and there’s a decently sized collection of free-to-read manga . I also recommend using Ink (INKR free-to-earn currency) to rent chapters from various titles in our catalog. Just bear in mind that this feature is only available in INKR’s mobile apps (iOS and Android).

Choosing the best manga website depends on your reading preferences, budget, and the importance you place on accessibility to the latest releases. Here’s a detailed guide to help you select the perfect manga platform:

  • Evaluate the diversity and breadth of the catalog. If you’re a fan of the mainstream, popular series, sites like VIZ and Book Walker might be more appealing due to their extensive collections that include simultaneous releases from Japan. For readers interested in a wide range of newer and less mainstream titles, Manga Plus and INKR could be better options.
  • Consider the cost and type of access you prefer. Book Walker combines manga and anime, offering a dual experience for a single subscription fee, which is ideal if you also watch anime. Kodansha and VIZ offer flexible purchasing options, from subscription access to individual volumes, which might suit budget-conscious readers or those who prefer to own their manga.
  • The ease of use of the website and its reading interface is crucial. Check if the platform allows you to customize your reading experience , provides high-quality images, and loads content quickly. Platforms like INKR focus heavily on a user-friendly experience with customizable reading options.
  • Look for a platform that legally obtains its manga. Supporting legal sites helps contribute to the manga industry and creators. All platforms mentioned — VIZ, Book Walker, Manga Plus, Kodansha, and INKR — are legal and support the creators.
  • Check for additional features that enhance reading pleasure , such as bookmarking, notification updates for new releases, and community features that allow interaction with other fans. Sites may also offer unique features like editorial content, bonus materials, and interviews with creators.
  • Ensure the platform is accessible globally or if there are regional restrictions. If you often read on the go, consider the availability of apps or offline viewing options.

When visiting manga websites, staying safe and protecting your personal information is crucial. Here are some practical tips to keep your manga reading experience secure :

  • Use legitimate sites. Stick to well-known, reputable manga websites that legally distribute content. Sites like VIZ, Book Walker Manga Plus, Kodansha, and INKR are licensed to distribute manga legally. Using legitimate sites reduces the risk of encountering malware or phishing attempts.
  • Check site security. Before entering any personal information, verify the website’s security by looking for a URL that starts with "https://" — the 's' stands for secure. Also, look for a padlock icon in the address bar, which indicates that the site uses encryption to protect data.
  • Use strong, unique passwords. If you create an account, choose a strong, unique password that combines letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using the same password across multiple sites to minimize risks if one site suffers a data breach.
  • Install antivirus software. Keep your device protected by installing reputable antivirus software. This software can detect and remove malware, provide real-time protection against threats, and scan files before they are downloaded.
  • Enable two-factor authentication. If the website offers 2FA, enable it. 2FA adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification (like a code sent to your phone) in addition to your password.
  • Be wary of ads and pop-ups. Many free manga sites rely on ads for revenue, which can sometimes lead to malicious sites. Use an ad blocker to prevent unwanted ads and pop-ups from appearing. However, remember that some legitimate sites may ask you to turn off ad blockers to access their content.
  • Regularly update your software. Updates often include security patches that protect against new threats.
  • Be cautious with personal information. Limit the amount of personal information you share online. Be careful about what details you provide on manga websites, especially in forums or in your profile.
  • Monitor your account activity. Regularly check your account for any unauthorized activity. If the site allows, review your login history to see if there has been any access from unfamiliar locations or devices.

Are manga sites illegal?

Not all manga sites are illegal. Many operate legally, having obtained the necessary licenses to distribute manga content . These sites typically compensate the original creators and publishers, ensuring that your support also benefits those who create the manga.

However, many illegal manga sites distribute copyrighted material without permission from the creators or publishers. These sites don’t compensate the creators and often violate copyright laws, which can also lead to legal repercussions in some jurisdictions.

Is it safe to read manga online?

Illegal manga sites pose significant security threats. They can harbor malware, redirect you to phishing sites, or connect you to insecure advertising networks. These risks can compromise both your personal information and device security. However, it's important to be aware that even legal manga sites can track your reading habits and may share this data with advertisers, leading to targeted ads. Always prioritize online safety and privacy .

What manga sites should I avoid?

You should avoid any manga sites known for hosting pirated content. Many sites, including BATO, Manga Fox, and MangaDex, often distribute manga illegally, which can expose you to various security risks, such as malware and phishing attacks. Sticking to legitimate and licensed platforms is the safest way to enjoy manga online.

Finding the perfect spot to read manga online can feel overwhelming, especially when you want to steer clear of illegal sites and pesky ads. By opting for trusted sites like VIZ, Book Walker, Manga Plus, Kodansha, and INKR, you're getting access to a vast array of manga and supporting the creators in the right way.

Each of these platforms brings something unique to the table. Whether it's snagging the latest chapters directly from Japan for free or enjoying your manga uninterrupted by ads, these top sites offer a secure and delightful reading experience. So, if you're revisiting timeless classics or catching up on the latest releases, these websites are your best bet for a safe and satisfying manga adventure.
