FTCE General Knowledge Test Registration
To register for the General Knowledge exam, you must first create an online FTCE/FELE account. Once you are logged in, select âGeneral Knowledge (GK) (082)â as your exam. From there, you can register for the exam, pay the $130 testing fee, and schedule your testing appointment.
On the day of your exam, you should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled appointment time. Once you arrive, the check-in process will begin. You will be asked to sign in and provide two valid forms of government-issued ID, one of which must be a photo ID.
After the check-in process, you will be asked to place all personal items in a locker outside the testing room, or you may be asked to leave them in your car. If you wear eyeglasses, they will be briefly removed and inspected before you enter the testing room.
Once the test begins, you will be allowed to take breaks. However, the timer will not be stopped during your break, so use your break time carefully.
How the FTCE General Knowledge Test is Scored
Your final FTCE score is calculated using a scaled scoring method. This method works by taking the number of questions you answered correctly and converting it to a scaled score. To pass, you will need to achieve a scaled score of at least 200 on each multiple-choice subtest, and you must achieve a score of 8 out of 12 to pass the essay subtest. You must pass all four subtests to pass the exam.
You will receive your official score report within four weeks after testing.
Retaking the FTCE General Knowledge Test
If you wish to retake the test, you may do so after waiting 31 calendar days and re-paying the necessary exam fees.

FTCE General Knowledge Practice Test Tactics – Best 5 GKE Tips To Pass Quicker Now
Scared of failing the FTCE General Knowledge test and wasting hundreds of dollars to retake it, only to fail again?
Florida educators call the Florida Teacher Certification Exam “frustrating” and say “It defeats you.”
Don’t let their FTCE prep mistakes and exam failure be YOUR experience!
Whether you’re taking the FTCE General Knowledge exam for the first time or the fifth time, make THIS the time you pass!
See: The Secret To Finding A FTCE Study Guide — That Actually Helps You Pass!
To pass the FTCE General Knowledge test, follow these 5 steps below.
FTCE General Knowledge #1: Stop Procrastinating! Begin Preparing For The GKE Today!
Good teachers fail the FTCE General Knowledge test only to retake it and fail again and again.
Your first step is easy: go to the fl.nesinc site to skim the information available about the FTCE GKE.
The FTCE General Knowledge Test (082) is really 4 subtests, which cost $130 your first time:
- The Essay Subtest (825) allows 50 minutes for you to write 1 essay.
- The English Language Skills (ELS) Subtest (826) allows 40 minutes to answer 40 multiple choice questions.
- The Reading Subtest (827) allows 55 minutes to answer 40 multiple choice questions.
- The Mathematics Subtest (828) allows 1 hour & 40 minutes to answer 45 multiple choice questions.
You may already be frustrated, wondering where to begin your preparation. Don’t give up!
Here comes the secret to passing the FTCE GKE: you must dig deeply into the details of each of the 4 subtests to understand all 4 General Knowledge Exam subtests!
FTCE General Knowledge Practice Tip #2: Understand YOUR FTCE GKE Weak Areas
Just because you have read through the Competencies tested by the FTCE General Knowledge doesn’t mean you understand the GKE !
You MUST know your weak areas to pass the FTCE GKE.
Which areas of the General Knowledge Exam do YOU need to review?
The best way to begin is to know the details of each subtest and use those details to prepare for the GKE.
Here’s how:
- Print out the 6 pages of “Competencies and Skills and Blueprint.”
- Get a highlighter.
- As you carefully read each “Skill” that’s tested, highlight the skills that are your weakest .
Look at your list. Then ask yourself this question:
Have you ever been surprised by a low score on an exam because you studied for days, took dozens of FTCE practice test questions and thought you knew all the material?
If that describes you, take the free FTCE General Knowledge practice tests offered on the fl.nesinc site.
How well did you do on the skills you thought you knew?
The IES (Institute of Education Sciences) finds that “without training, most learners cannot accurately judge what they do and don’t know, and typically overestimate how well they have mastered material when they are finished studying.”
Use the FTCE General Knowledge practice questions and your list to find those weak areas.
Next, look at the pie charts on your General Knowledge Test Blueprint. Each of the Competencies lists an “Approximate Percentage of Subtest Questions.”
The actual number of FTCE General Knowledge questions for each Competency varies from 7-20. You can’t afford to ignore ANY of the Competencies, but it makes sense to focus on those with the highest number of questions on the Subtests.
How should you focus your test preparation time? Choose practice tests, flashcards or other test-prep materials based on YOUR needs!
Go to: Finally, Get Rid Of FTCE Overwhelm And Anxiety Once And For All…
Tip #3: Choose FTCE GKE Practice Test And Study Materials Made For YOU!
You know the blueprint. You know your weak areas. Now read what research says about preparing for high-stakes tests like the Florida Teachers Certification Exam General Knowledge Exam.
Not all test prep tools are equal.

Tip #4: Use FTCE General Knowledge Practice And Prep Guides Wisely!
Once you have your prep books, use research to get the most out of them!
A recent meta-analysis of 118 articles that researched practice testing. Use their results so YOU can pass the FCTE GKE:
- Use many short practice sessions (Bucknell Teaching & Learning Practice says 20-40 minutes)
- Take time between the sessions (5-10 minutes)
- NO cell phones or other distractions
- read ALL of the explanations for both correct and incorrect answers
- learn the words , phrases or types of questions that confuse you or take much more time
- mark the questions that take more time than others and look for that pattern ( is it the Competency you don’t understand or is the same type of question confusing you every time)
Remember that test-taking is a skill ! Like many teacher candidates have already found out, you may know the material , but if you don’t know how to take the FCTE GKE, you may not pass!
Tips #5: Plan To Pass The FTCE General Knowledge (GKE)!
FTCE study guide books , practice exams, flashcards or online videos can help you to pass the General Knowledge Exam if you follow Step 4.
But there is one more thing YOU need to know to pass the Florida Teacher Certification Exam’s GKE.
You need to know what passing means. A passing score is what you need. So what is that magic number? Each is listed below, along with the Competencies that have the highest percentage of questions.
- Essay: 8 out of 12 points. The two scorers’ six-point rubric scores must add up to 8!
- The English Language Skills (ELS) Subtest requires 70% or 28/40 correct answers. Conventions questions are half of the test! Study the rules and take the practice tests!
- The Reading Subtest requires 75% or 32/40 correct answers. Each Competency is nearly even, with 10 to 14 questions.
- The Mathematics Subtest requires 72% or 33/45 correct answers. Over 60% of the test is based on “algebraic thinking and the coordinate plane” and “probability, statistics, and data interpretation.” Make sure your study materials cover these Competencies!
Give yourself the gift of time to follow these 5 Steps and YOU can pass the FTCE General Knowledge Exam!

The Florida Legislature has determined that the quality of a teacher's general knowledge is an important part of the overall level of teaching excellence in the state of Florida and has passed legislation for ensuring educator quality. The General Knowledge Test provides a basic foundation for instruction for teachers at all levels of teaching and instruction, and the competencies and skills assessed by the test are aligned by law to state standards.
Potential Alternatives
Please note that the Florida Department of Education does not have the authority to waive or alter program requirements determined by Florida colleges or universities. The program requirements of Florida colleges and universities are independent of the certification requirements set by the Department.
Test Redevelopment
The General Knowledge Test was redeveloped in 2014, and new passing scores for all subtests were established by numerous committees of content experts representing all levels of the profession, including K–12 teachers, district leadership, and college faculty. All regions of the state were represented during this multi-year development process. These content experts, representing the education profession in Florida, ensured that all test materials—including competencies and skills, test questions, and passing score recommendations—were placed at an appropriate level for the Beginning Effective Teacher Candidate (BETC). These representatives of the education profession also established the level of complexity and rigor for the General Knowledge Test to ensure that teacher candidates possess an appropriate level of proficiency and knowledge to effectively instruct Florida's students.

FTCE General Knowledge: Essay (825) Exam Scoring Guide
What is the FTCE General Knowledge: Essay (825) Passing Score?
The FTCE General Knowledge Essay (825) consists of (obviously) an essay written in a 50 minute period. A score of 8 out of 12 points is required to pass.
How is the Exam Scored?
Each examinee’s response on the General Knowledge Essay is scored holistically by two raters using the scoring rubric available in the Test Information Guide for the General Knowledge Test, which evaluates both the substance of the essay and the composition skills demonstrated by the examinee. These elements include ideas, focus, organization, style (diction and sentence structure), and mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and usage). The two raters’ scores are combined to achieve the examinee’s total score. (If the raters’ scores differ by more than one point, an FTCE Chief Rater resolves the discrepancy.) The scoring rubric ranges from 1 to 6 score points, resulting in combined totals that range from 2 to 12 score points. To achieve a passing score of 8 score points, an examinee’s response would require a minimum score point of 4 from each rater.
When Will I Get My FTCE Score?
Official score reports will be posted to your account within 4 weeks of your test date.
How Do I Understand My Score Report?
This oneâs easy: if you pass, you will see the “PASS” status on your score report. If you do not pass, you will see the “NOT PASS” status on your score report with a numeric score.
For those who pass the exam, this is probably the end of what you need to know. For those who fail the exam, you will want to study your comprehensive score report closely in order to dissect what you did wrong so that you can correct it for next time.
For more information on understanding your score report, see here .
What if I Need to Retake the FTCE General Knowledge: Essay Exam?
If you happen to fail the exam, donât fret, it happens all the time: the first-attempt pass rate for the General Knowledge Test in Florida is only 62%. To retake the exam, you will just need to wait 31 days and pay the exam fee again. No problem!
Please PAY ATTENTION to that â31 daysâ part: the registration system does not block you from re-registering within 31 days. Instead, it allows you to register and take the exam again, but when your score is processed and the administrators figure out that you didnât wait the full time, theyâll then invalidate the new score and keep your fee payment (no refunds). So be wary and make sure to wait it out.
Also: if you happen to fail the exam, there is an option called a Score Verification session, wherein for $75 you can review your test and submit scoring challenges for review. This could result in a score being changed from a Fail to a Pass, so itâs an option worth knowing about should you find yourself in this position!
