The benefits of eco-friendly products go beyond just helping the environment. Choosing to buy sustainably can give you better quality and be good for your well-being.

Shopping for sustainable products can also save on your finances. Here are some of the top benefits of eco-friendly products.

Benefits of eco-friendly products

1. eco friendly products are usually safer.

One of the main benefits of eco-friendly products is that they’re usually safer. Regular products are often made with harmful chemicals that can be bad for our well-being.

One example is non-organic cotton clothing. Companies hire farmers that use pesticides on the cotton being grown.

Some clothing manufacturers will even use heavy metals when dying the fabric and applying finishing pieces. These harmful ingredients can last in the fabric long after it’s been manufactured.

In an article by lifestyle brand Goop titled, “ Is Your Clothing Toxic? ”, they noted many potential negative effects that can occur from wearing these products. These unsafe materials aren’t just in clothing. They can be found in beauty products, personal hygiene products, and even toys.

Eco-friendly products are generally made with natural or organic ingredients. Those ingredients are safer for us. Eco-friendly companies work with manufacturers that do not use chemicals during the growing process.

2. Sustainable products can be softer

Many consumers find that eco-friendly clothes, towels, and sheets are softer than products made with regular materials. Take for example these organic towels made by Coyuchi .

Many of the reviewers of the product described these towels as being very soft. The same praise is often given to other products made with organic cotton or other eco-friendly materials.

3. Green products are more long-lasting

A frustrating thing about non-sustainable products is that they don’t last very long. That’s not the case with sustainable products. Many of them last at least twice as long as their counterparts.

One such example is energy-efficient light bulbs . These bulbs can last anywhere from three to 25 times longer than regular ones.

You have the lights on longer, and your wallet stays fat not having to buy a new one. Clothing can also be more long-lasting when made sustainably. Compared to regular cotton clothing, hemp clothing is more durable.

Regular cotton t-shirts typically last about 10 years. You’d think that’s not bad, but in comparison to hemp, that’s nothing.

Hemp t-shirts can last for potentially double or triple the time of cotton t-shirts. From bamboo straws to bamboo toothbrushes, eco-friendly products can last you for years to come.

4. Shopping sustainably is less expensive

As mentioned earlier, eco-friendly products can be less expensive in the long run. We know you’re probably thinking, “Aren’t eco-friendly products expensive to buy?”

While it’s true some items are expensive, you may not need to buy another one anytime soon. Replacing a product every one or two years can become costly over time.

Going back to the light bulb example, an incandescent light bulb can be as cheap as two dollars. The lowest price for an energy-efficient light bulb is about $10.

An LED light bulb will last you 25 times longer than the regular light bulb. That’s a lot you can save not having to replace a regular incandescent bulb over and over.

5. Reducing demand for harmful products

Businesses make decisions on what they supply based on demand. Right now, more people are buying regular products over sustainable products.

If you choose to buy more sustainable products, you help to curve the demand of non-sustainable products. The main objective of a business is to make money.

If companies that produce regular products see people buying more eco-friendly products, guess what happens? They’ll start creating more sustainable products in order to keep up with the market and keep making money.

It’s similar to the current vegan trend that’s sweeping across fast food restaurants. More people are becoming vegan causing food businesses to provide more vegan options to make money. Interestingly enough, it’s also good for the environment.

With less demand for meat, companies produce meat less. Meat production causes a release of carbon emission gases that harm the planet.

6. Gives fair wages for workers

It’s often the case that sustainable companies work with manufacturers that operate under fair labor practices. Many of these businesses have fair trade certifications. A fair trade certification means three things:

• Fair pay for workers
• Safer working conditions
• Benefits to support living costs

When you buy an eco-friendly product, you’re helping workers across the world live more comfortably. You’re helping families get everything they need.

7. Protects the environment

Of course, the biggest benefit of sustainable shopping is that it protects the environment. Products that are sustainably produced reduce the impact we have on the planet.

Less greenhouse gas emissions are released into the atmosphere, and fewer resources are used to make them. Eco-friendly products are also generally recyclable.

That means they can be used all over again, and save even more of our natural resources. Additionally, companies that make sustainable products tend to have them delivered in recyclable packaging materials .

Environmentally friendly products are market-oriented products that cause minimal environmental degradation and their production is linked to a product development process that is structured in a way that considers the impacts that can be caused to the environment throughout their life cycle.

Introduction

The environmental degradation caused by human activities has increased during this last century beyond what the Earth system can sustain. Climate change, ocean eutrophication, and biodiversity loss are some examples of the factors that have exceeded natural boundaries (Rockström et al. 2009 ).

Traditionally, product development (PD) focused on achieving quality, cost, and time targets, while environmental aspects were only indirectly considered (Abele 2005 ). However, given the current socioecological situation, it is now urgent to integrate sustainability aspects in PD. To address such issue within the firms’ boundaries, PD is now conceived from a sustainable development...

There are so many ways to reduce your carbon footprint via your kitchen , and the best place to start is with your meals and your food waste.

An eco friendly kitchen is designed to reduce its environmental impact through sustainable habits and practices. The focus is on eliminating food waste, composting, reducing trash, conserving energy, and using eco friendly materials, tools, and appliances.

When we bought our house, I got to organize my kitchen into an eco-friendly dream. Our kitchen is pretty small, but we’ve prioritized a place for composting our food scraps, a spot for all of our eco friendly cleaning products under the sink, a cloth towel system to avoid using paper towels, and the BIG thing – swapping our appliances.

All of our appliances were over 40 years old and really inefficient. Not to mention the family of mice living in our oven… we chose energy-efficient appliances, and swapped our gas stove for an induction cooktop which I love!

Whether you own your home or you rent, you can make all different levels of changes to accommodate your eco friendly kitchen. Whether that’s small habit changes like tossing vegetable scraps and coffee grounds into the compost instead of the trash, making sure to recycle, and ditching single-use plastic. All of these efforts add up to massive impact. You’ll save money, reduce waste, and promote a healthier planet.

1. reusable food storage containers.

Swap single-use plastic food containers for reusable ones. Single-use plastics fill our dumps and landfills so using reusable food containers was one of the first steps I made when creating a more eco friendly kitchen. There are several options to choose from — glass, stainless steel, and silicone are just a few.

I avoid storing leftovers in plastic for health reasons from the synthetic estrogens as well as microplastics . I prefer glass containers because you can microwave them, and they’re clear so you don’t forget what you’ve stored in them.

Glass snapware is one of my favorites because they come in various different shapes and sizes and are leak-proof. The lids for snapware are often made from plastic, with a silicone lining, but the glass base isn’t. Just make sure you take the top off before heating up leftovers in the microwave.

Plus, if you buy things like peanut butter or pasta sauce in glass jars, you’re getting a glass container to reuse for free! So making the swap to reusable containers is an easy swap to make.

You can also invest in some glass canisters for storing your dry goods from the bulk food store. Many places, like The Container Store, sell these both online and in-person.

Silicone bags are another decent option for food storage. I love the ones Stasher bags sells, as they’re easy to close and can be used in the microwave, oven, and freezer, making them quite versatile.

If you still have some Tupperware that’s in decent shape, you don’t have to toss it out though. You can upcycle it by using it to store non-food items, or even utilizing it to freeze food scraps for your compost.

2. beeswax wraps and silicone lids

Replacing your plastic wrap with beeswax wraps or silicone lids for leftovers is yet another way to reduce how much plastic you use. 

I’ve been opting for beeswax wraps for years now and I’ll never go back to saran wrap! These wraps are made with natural beeswax and organic cotton, making them compostable at the end of their life. Beeswrap has also begun selling vegan versions as well, made using plant-based wax.

Beeswax wraps come in all different sizes for various uses: There’s small, medium, large, and bread wraps to choose from. Getting a variety pack is ideal for beginners, as it lets you work with an assortment of sizes.

To use beeswax wraps, you simply use the warmth of your hands to secure the wraps onto your surface. You can use them to secure plates, bowls, the ends of cut produce, bread, loose produce, and more.

I like to keep some silicone lids on hand as well, as they’re also reusable and more environmentally friendly than plastic wrap. Silicone lids can be used to cover small, medium and large dishes and bowls. They’re also very easy to wash by hand.

Both options really do keep your food just as fresh. Additionally, if you’re in a pinch, you can always just use a plate to cover a bowl in the fridge.

3. stainless steel or bamboo utensils

Plastic utensils can melt or fall apart easily, and they’re also teeming with microplastics.

Stainless steel and bamboo should be your go-to as you create your new sustainable cooking arsenal. They’re more durable, last longer, and curb plastic pollution. There are also so many chic options for stainless steel and bamboo these days. No need to give up on style. 

For silicone utensils, Oxo is a reliable brand. Oxo is a 1% For The Planet member, which means they commit 1% of their annual sales to environmental nonprofits.

I personally love bamboo and I even have a bamboo dishwashing brush to do my dishes with.

Caraway just started selling a knives and utensils set too: The utensils are made from FSC-Certified Birch Wood, and the metal is made from premium German steel. You can just get the knife set or the utensil set on its own, or together.

However, if you’re looking into more budget-friendly options, I suggest checking your local thrift store. Often times there will be secondhand wooden and silicone utensils there at affordable prices.

I would advise you clean your thrifted wooden utensils before using them though: Just boil some water and let them soak in it as it boils. Don’t forget to oil your wooden utensils on occasion too using olive oil or coconut oil. This will keep them looking like new.

To store your cooking utensils, consider using an upcycled mason jar, or a thrifted vase or canister.

4. eco friendly cooking pans

If you’re a long-time reader of the blog you know I cook a lot, and having eco friendly cooking pans is a must. I’ve reviewed several cookware brands and bakeware sets .

Most conventional non-stick cookware contains Teflon coating. Teflon is made with a specific kind of Perfluorocarbon (PFC) that makes the surface of cookware resistant to sticking.

The problem with this is when Teflon coated pans get overheated (above 500 degrees F), the Teflon coatings on nonstick cookware start to break down, releasing toxic chemicals into the air.   

It only takes 2.5 minutes for a traditional non-stick pan on high heat to exceed 500 degrees F and begin releasing forever chemicals, aka PFAs. PFAS don’t break down in our bodies, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals.” Instead they just just stay and build up in our bodies year after year.

It’s best to opt for non-toxic materials like ceramic, cast iron, or stainless steel — not only do they last longer than their plastic counterparts, but they also guarantee a cooking environment free from harmful chemicals.

There are some really nice-looking brands out there. One of my favorites is Caraway Cookware . They boast plastic-free shipping, are Teflon-free, and have a recycling program.

5. compost bin or compostable bags

I love my compost bin! Composting is one of the best ways to keep food scraps out of landfills and create nutrient-rich soil for plants like herbs, fruits, vegetables, and even flowers.

Contrary to popular belief, you also don’t need a lot of space (or a yard, though I do have an article on backyard composting ) to compost. Even better if you have your own veggie garden to use all that glorious compost in. Building a veggie garden on my balcony is on my list of projects to tackle.

There are tons of countertop compost bin options available, or you can build your own . If you do settle on a countertop compost bin, I recommend lining it with one of these compostable trash bags for easier clean up.

I also love using my Lomi , which is a great option for those who love plants, have limited access to industrial composting, or live in an apartment. It can fit on a countertop, or a sturdy display table.

You just feed it your food scraps and Lomi creates nutrient-rich Lomi Earth (aka pre-compost) which is rich in microbial cultures and organic matter. This is perfect to use on plants of all kinds, lawns and gardens, as it will help them flourish

If you’re new to composting, here are 125+ items you can compost around your home . Items like banana peels, eggshells, veggie peels, yard waste and even hair can be composted!

Also, be aware that biodegradable and compostable aren’t the same thing. Essentially, biodegradable simply means a product will eventually break down. But compostable means it will not only break down, but also return to the earth and become a beneficial part of the soil.

For example, plastic is technically biodegradable (because it will break up into microplastics over the course of hundreds of years). However, it is not compostable, because these microplastics will never fully integrate with the soil.

And something that you can use in any room in your home — are eco friendly cleaning products .

Most traditional cleaning products are full of toxins that are harmful to your health and bad for the environment. In fact, there’s no federal law that requires companies to disclose the ingredients used in your cleaning products.

When these harsh chemicals go down our drains, they eventually end up in our waterways where they can harm aquatic life.

Be sure to read the ingredients label on your cleaning products and research any ingredients you find questionable. As a general rule, you’ll want to avoid phosphates and methylisothiazolinone, as both are considered toxic to marine ecosystems.

What’s more, many people reach for single-use products like paper towels when there are so many other more sustainable options out there. 

Reusable paper towels are just the beginning. You should also look for sustainable dish soap , dishwasher detergent , all-purpose cleaning spray, sponges, and sanitizers.

Here are some simple ways to keep cleaning in the kitchen sustainable:

• Use a wooden dish brush with a replaceable and compostable head
• Try a dish soap bar, or refillable dish soap option
• Clean your sink using natural all-purpose cleaners, or baking soda
• Use rags, microfiber cloths, or compostable Swedish dish cloths to clean up messes
• Clean your oven using a baking soda paste instead of harsh chemicals
• Utilize reusable + DIY disinfectant wipes

For example, if you normally don’t use a crockpot, but one recipe calls for it, ask someone you know who has one if you can use it for the night.

Paper can be recycled by ripping off any sticky labels on its surface (such as price tags), folding sheets neatly so their edges line up, and placing them in a paper bag. The bags should be sealed tightly, then placed into boxes for recycling pickup.

Eco-friendly products are always a good idea

Trying to decipher the ingredients of major commercially-available cleaning products can be a particularly difficult task. Thankfully, natural alternatives exist if you are looking to avoid exposure to all the cryptic, environmentally and personally harmful agents and preservatives.

Here at Greenpop, our favourite brand is Better Earth who stand out by selling a range of natural, biodegradable and proudly South African cleaning products. They’ve been supporting Greenpop since 2014 and we are lucky to enjoy the use of their high-quality cleaning agents in our offices and at our events . 

Using ‘green’ household products means choosing the safer option for your health, your family and the planet. Indeed, many cleaning products carry “Toxic!”, “Warning!”, “Flammable!” labels yet we continue to spray/wipe/mop them around our homes, pets and children! Companies will use harsh and toxic chemicals in order to cut costs to produce the competitively strongest cleaning products and the consumer’s health is often completely shaded by this profit goal. However, because of the environmental and health costs, eco-friendly products may be more financially sustainable in the long-run.

Choosing products that are gentle on the environment is not only about reducing your own coughing and sneezing but also helps the planet. Green cleaning products are usually made using natural ingredients and sustainable manufacturing practices such as those of Better Earth which are manufactured locally with every effort made to reduce their carbon footprint. Also, a more conscious consumption of household products helps mobilise households to participate in the preservation of precious resources such as plastic, metal and water. For example, grey water from washing done with eco-friendly products is often safe for use in watering gardens or flushing toilets, which cannot be said for more chemical and toxic alternatives. 

Whilst more commercial products may be cheaper (on the surface level) or easier to use, it is our shared responsibility to make buying choices that are better for ourselves, the planet and generations to come.

We chatted to Kerry from Better Earth, who gave us a run-down on our favourite cleaning product provider.  

Can you tell us about Better Earth?

Better Earth provides cleaning products that are gentle on the environment (and your hands) but also high quality cleaning agents. All of our products are as effective as other cleaning products but provide peace of mind to the eco-conscious user.

Our eco-friendly products are manufactured locally and are free of sulphated surfactants, parabens, animal products, colourants and synthetic fragrance.

We are endorsed by Beauty Without Cruelty (an animal rights organisation) and our eco-friendly products are completely bio-degradable and perfect for grey water use. 

What about your products?

Our product range includes NEW Toilet Tamer, NEW Body Wash, bathroom and toilet cleaner, air freshener, cleaning spray, floor cleaners, dishwashing liquid, laundry gel and a dish washing gel for automatic dish washing machines. 

What do you find most challenging about your business?

I think that we used to find it challenging to convince people that natural cleaning products are as effective as conventional products but that is slowly changing. Now we need to find ways to make natural products more available to more people.

How do you address environmental challenges?

We think about every aspect of our business from an environmental and social aspect. We have identified the areas that we are behind and always make it our mission to continually make things better.  A great example of this is that we have recently found suppliers for our packaging that can offer us recycled material! We are very excited about this as we can now actively use discarded plastic and find a use for it.

If someone was interested in eco-friendly cleaning supplies, what would be a few things you would suggest?

The beauty of being in the environmental industry is that there is so much room for new ideas and growth. 

We need all the fresh thinkers we can get when it comes to solving environmental problems so I would say to anyone interested that they should go for it!

Why did you choose to get involved in with Greenpop in a sustainable way ?

Eco-friendly products in focus at 'Style Bangkok 2024'

A dazzling array of eco-friendly lifestyle products, fashion and crafts will take centre stage during "Style Bangkok 2024", which will take place at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center's (QSNCC) Hall 1-4, Ratchadaphisek Road, from Wednesday to Sunday.

This is the seventh edition of what is hailed as Asia's premier lifestyle and fashion trade show organised by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) in collaboration with the Board of Trade of Thailand to showcase the full potential of Thai soft power.

Held under the theme "ChicNature", the fair seamlessly blends environmental consciousness with chic trends, presenting products that capture Thailand's unique identity.

Boasting over 500 exhibitors and 820 booths, the event spans various categories of lifestyle products including furniture, fashion and leather goods, gifts, home decor, houseware, kitchenware, toys, stationery and spa products as well as new materials for the hospitality industries by internationally-acclaimed Thai brands, local designers, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and craftspeople.

This is an opportunity for global buyers to explore the diverse and dynamic landscape of Thai design and manufacturing, discover the rare gems of creativity, meet the unsung heroes of Thai craftsmanship who blend traditional techniques with modern design, and negotiate trade with the creators and manufacturers behind the sustainable products.

This year's highlight is the "Pha Thai Sai Hai Sanook Pavilion" held in collaboration with the Community Development Department to promote apparels and textile products from local producers towards global markets.
