The system's slogan is Miracles Made Daily, a weak and generic slogan and says nothing, and honestly does nothing to inspire. First, I don't want a miracle, I want a professional doctor to save me – if I'm relying on God to save me, why would I pony up for health care services? I know what they are trying to say with this slogan, but it misses the market big time for me. I agree with the Jackson policy that individual departments do not necessarily need slogans.….

Benchmarking Digital Marketing Strategies for Businesses

Digital Marketing StrategiesIt would be prudent for me to shift a larger portion of my marketing division promotional budget to digital marketing. However, when marketers engage in digital marketing strategies, the outcome becomes excellent. Digital marketing is a marketing initiative leveraging the internet and online media through computers. With marketing simulation, it is easy to incorporate appropriate strategies virtually and, through that, be able to save on expenses and reduce any risks associated with experimentation. Thus, the potential digital marketing strategies applicable include the use of Social media marketing platforms, influencer marketing, and email marketing (Morgan et al., 2019). Others include; content marketing, search engine optimization, and pay-per-click (PPC).First, social media tools provide the most reliable platforms for digital marketing activities. For example, Facebook has a great cloud of users who become the audience for the information that I would share. Besides, it provides a quick medium for passing information….

Digital Marketing Fundamentals

Technology in Business The Digital Phone Concept The Digital Phone began with a single video on a concept of a phone, worth keeping, instead of the regular purchase of phones once they spoil. The strategy used by the Dave, a designer behind the concept, is the use of social media to spread the concept. As for now, through the social media, the concept has reached over 400,000 people. The idea was not central to the creation of a phone, but spread the message of change in the mobile industry. Because of the many people who have come out to support the idea, the mobile industry may give in to the calls of a modular direction (Phonebloks). The idea aims at creating a personalized phone, which will have "blocks" that a user can attach to a main board. Each of the blocks is responsible for a particular function on the phone, and it is similar….

WORLDWIDE E-BIKES 13Executive SummaryThe marketing director at Worldwide e-Bikes engaged consultants to develop a report on the companys digital marketing strategy in light of a plan to expand into the Australian market. The report provides crucial insights to the board of directors on the digital marketing opportunity in Australia, persona research, strategies for short-term market impact, and KPIs for fiscal oversight. The research conducted concludes that the Australian market provides a viable opportunity for digital marketing given the high levels of internet penetration, internet usage, and access to mobile devices such as smartphones. To counter the high intra-industry competition, the company could differentiate itself by providing additional aftersales services in line with customer needs, offering personalized customer experience, and selling through established ecommerce businesses such as Woolworths.com.au, apple.com, and coles.com.au to reach more customers online. To effectively develop its personas, the company could use a combination of research strategies, including….

Therefore, to really get the most impact out of the product launch, each different segment will need to be considered independently and a comprehensive plan must be designed to hit each individual target that is identified. The greater the level of support and information a customer needs to make a decision on which product to buy, the more likely a retail channel will be the best approach. Conversely if a product is by nature highly commoditized or is so popular it has strong customer trust, digital channels are the best approach, as they will drop the cost per transaction (Edelman, 2010). Companies who are excelling at bridging both strategies include Apple and BestBuy. Apple has both their walk-in stores for managing the demonstration of their latest products and also delivering excellent personalized service at their Genius Bars. They also have one of the best websites and digital channels for selling their products online as well. The balance of digital and retail or space and place, is excellent, and supports the Apple brand overall. BestBuy is another company who has successfully defined a strong mix of space….

Note on triangulation The proposed three-method design for this exploratory study is the researcher's way of ensuring that research results are triangulated. Marketing Nike Has Long Been

Nike has a steady new product pipeline and any one product can fail miserably, but Blizzard has long lead times and needs every new product to be a hit, otherwise its subscriptions will dry up. Gamers will not have enough loyalty to wait another ten years for the next iteration to give the company another try. As a result, Blizzard is forced to have a much stronger emphasis on managing products. The products need to be finely managed, and this is why the company gives more leeway to its developers. Nike can afford a miss, but Blizzard cannot. Thus, even though Nike employees are active people, the company relies more on its marketing department to drive product development, while Blizzard very specifically relies on its engineers. The approach that each company has taken with respect to developing and managing products has worked well for each firm. It is hard to argue….

What Is Digital Marketing? Types, Skills, and Careers

The internet has revolutionized marketing. Find out how you can leverage digital marketing to launch your career.

[Featured image] Several employees work on their laptops and desktop computers in a digital marketing agency.

Digital marketing , or online marketing , is a form of advertising that uses the internet and digital technologies to connect with customers. Rather than traditional media, such as print, radio, or television, digital marketing uses computers, mobile, social media, search engines, and other digital channels to reach consumers wherever they spend the most time.

Learn all you need to know about digital marketing, its methodologies, and how to get started in this career. If you're ready to build skills in this growing field, consider the Google Digital Marketing & E-Commerce Professional Certificate .

What is digital marketing?

Digital marketing is a form of marketing that leverages the internet and digital technologies, such as computers and mobile devices, to connect with customers. More than running a sponsored Instagram ad to drive sales, it's a set of practices that interacts with customers at every stage of the buying journey.

Digital marketing strategy includes email, social media, advertising, and multimedia messaging that is distributed through mobile and web. Over 60 percent of the global population is online, and more people are joining them every day [ 1 ]. That's why companies are now increasing their digital marketing budgets by double-digit figures while traditional marketing gets slashed [ 2 ].

Data plays a big part in digital marketing. With marketing analytics, marketers can collect valuable information by tracking a customer’s journey in real time and target specific audiences by tailoring content to their preferred digital channels. For example, Starbucks has collected data from their rewards mobile apps to help identify seasonal trends and create tailored promotions [ 3 ].

Watch this short video from Google's Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate on how digital marketing creates value:

5 types of digital marketing (with examples)

Digital marketers connect with potential customers through different channels. The following digital marketing channels, used by small companies and big businesses alike, remain among the most popular and impactful used today.

1. Search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM)

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a technique that seeks to improve the ranking of online material on search engines such as Google or Bing. If you have ever searched for something on Google, you’ve likely noticed that even the simplest search can yield millions of results. Yet, you probably rarely go past the first few suggestions, let alone the next page.

In such a highly crowded space, digital marketers use SEO marketing to ensure that potential customers actually find their products or services online. Generally, SEO marketing targets organic search terms, meaning marketers create content that naturally aligns with and ranks for top search terms related to their product. Search engine marketing (SEM) strategies typically incorporate both organic and paid media, such as buying ads on Google.

Some common ways to go about SEO include:

Creating quality content that meets searcher intent

Using keywords to help search engines identify relevant material

Using long-tail keywords (specific phrases that searchers use) to help content reach its target audience

Ensuring that content loads quickly and is compatible with mobile devices

Data drives SEO marketing

In SEO marketing, you'll be in charge of monitoring data, such as the bounce rate or clickthrough rate , to measure how well a blog, product page, or social media post is doing. You'll need to become familiar with tools like SEMRush and Google Analytics, as well as business intelligence tools like Tableau and Looker to generate and analyze data from your organization.

To explore the world of SEO, consider enrolling in the UC Davis Search Engine Optimization Specialization . This program covers Google SEO fundamentals, content and social tactics to boost SEO, and how to improve your website to rank higher in search.

2. Content marketing

Content marketing connects with target audiences through original content, such as blogs, articles, and newsletters. It is often used to raise brand awareness through material that appeals to a particular audience.

Content marketing can take many forms across a range of digital media channels, including:

Informative articles and blog posts

Original videos

Newsletters (like Substack, Medium, or LinkedIn)

To build skills in making content that goes viral, consider enrolling in the Viral Marketing and How to Craft Contagious Content course. This program takes about four hours to complete and covers "sticky ideas," social influence and networks, word of mouth, and more.

3. Email marketing

Marketers send out timely emails to large groups of people who have signed up for their contact list to inform potential customers of sales, discounts, and product launches. The impact of email marketing is clear: When used strategically, it can have an average return on investment (ROI) of 4,200 percent for every dollar invested [ 4 ].

Some common examples of emailing marketing include:

Timed emails that raise brand awareness during holiday seasons

Blast emails that inform recipients about upcoming sales events

Targeted emails that send personalized offers and messages to specific groups on an email list

4. Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising

Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising is a digital marketing model that involves an advertiser paying a publisher each time their ads are clicked. Typically, the publisher is a website owner, search engine operator, or social media platforms, such as Facebook or Instagram .

Typical examples of PPC advertising include:

Banner ads that flank web content on the sides or top of the page

Social media ads that appear in the feeds of targeted audiences

Ads that appear when a specific keyword is searched on a search engine, such as Google

5. Social media marketing

Social media marketing is a form of digital marketing that uses social networks such as Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok, to reach customers. It leverages the reach of social media channels with data-driven efforts to reach targeted consumers.

Whether through computers, mobile devices, or mobile apps, social media offers the opportunity to reach a wide—and targeted—audience of possible consumers.

Examples of social media marketing include:

Videos posted onto social media as a part of a larger campaign, such as this 80s-themed music video produced by peanut company Planters for the holidays

Pictures posted on Instagram that reflect a brand’s identity, such as Patagonia’s nature-filled Instagram account

Watch this video to get a glimpse at how you can use YouTube to reach audiences.

Digital marketing salary and job outlook

Digital marketing is an in-demand field with a growing impact because it offers brands the opportunity to reach billions of people using the internet and social media today.

On average, advertising, promotions, and marketing manager roles are projected to grow by 6 percent between 2022 and 2032, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics [ 5 ]. Glassdoor estimates that the average annual salary for a digital marketing manager in the United States is $95,697 as of March 2024 [ 6 ].

Building job-ready skills in an online course can be a great way to increase your earning potential. Consider the Digital Marketing Analyst Professional Certificate from Unilever.

How to become a digital marketer

Digital marketers need to be familiar with marketing, business, communications, and digital technologies. You'll need to be creative, strategic, and analytical.

Many employers prefer candidates with a bachelor’s degree in either business or communications , but a degree isn’t always necessary if you have the right skills. It is helpful for candidates to have done an internship while in school.

Skills needed in a digital marketing career:

Communication

Collaboration with designers, strategists, and product developers

Creative thinking

Data analysis and familiarity with marketing analytics

Social media marketing

Content creation

Since its inception, technology has transformed the way businesses operate and the consumption of goods and services. (Matarazzo et al. 2021 ; Sestino et al. 2020 ). For example, technology has revolutionized the way companies promote their products and services, perform their business activities, communicate/exchange information, and manage resources. On the consumer side, technology has significantly changed consumption patterns and empowered them to be part of the product acquisition process (Cham et al. 2020 , 2022 ; Cheah et al. 2022 ; Lim et al. 2022 ). In every aspect of business, the emergence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, virtual reality, and robots have created a new paradigm shift and promoted innovation in the area of marketing research and practices (Grewal et al. 2020 ; Lim et al. 2020; Steinhoff and Palmatier 2021 ). Such transformation has become a marketing catalyst, perpetuating new marketing trends and archetypes in digital marketing and marketing analytics.

In recent years, the progression of digital marketing via social media has expanded beyond its original purpose as a platform for social networking. Instead, it has evolved into a platform that enables businesses to communicate with their customers almost instantly and be directly involved in developing marketing strategies (Cham et al. 2021 ; Iankova et al. 2019 ). Specifically in digital marketing, customers can collaborate with companies as co-creators in almost every aspect of the business process including product/service development, value creation, and marketing strategy development (Li et al. 2021 ; Olson et al. 2021 ). By incorporating user-generated content into digital marketing, consumers can assume the role of “broadcasters,” they no longer listen to the marketers, just like what happened in the past (Cham et al. 2022 ; Cheung et al. 2021 ). Undoubtedly, the benefits of digital marketing and the potential of high ROI have made this channel one of the marketers’ most preferred choices (digitalthirdcoast.com 2022 ).

In addition, the emphasis on digitization and data-driven practice among businesses nowadays has made marketing lean towards science-based and provides marketers unlimited access to valuable insights into their company performance, customers, and opportunities (Ritter and Pedersen, 2020 ). In essence, marketing analysis is seen as identifying patterns of data that help marketers in marketing decisions. With the availability of marketing and data analysis tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Phyton, Heap Analytics, Optimizely, Klipfolio, etc.), the importance of how data can explain market trends and better understand consumer preferences are clearly spelled out (Petrescu and Krishen 2020 ; Yu et al. 2019 ). More importantly, marketing analytics help businesses and marketers optimize their marketing campaigns, segment their market, and reduce costs associated with marketing activities, providing business organizations with a sustainable approach in the long term.

Despite particular research conducted on the issues related to digital marketing and marketing analytics, additional attention is needed to study the revolution and potentially disruptive nature of these domains (Petrescu and Krishen 2021 , 2022 ). Considering the substantial impact of digital marketing and marketing analytics in the current competitive and demanding business landscape, the special issue editors hope that this issue lays a foundation in the academic perspective of these domains. We would like to recommend that more research be conducted to challenge the existing status quo and raise awareness of these domains in the near future; especially in the contemporary environment that requires more than just the knowledge brought from traditional marketing. For instance, there is room to explore further how biological technology (i.e., facial recognition payment), livestreaming, virtual influencer, neuromarketing, blockchain technology, metaverse, gamification, and omnichannel platform could be used for the marketing and analytic purposes.

Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the authors who have submitted their work to this special issue, “ Digitalization and Its Impact on Contemporary Marketing Strategies and Practices, ” of the Journal of Marketing Analytics, and we are grateful to all reviewers who have rendered their service and expertise to ensure the quality of the publications. We want to extend our appreciation to the editors, Anjala S. Krishen and Maria Petrescu, for their endless support and for entrusting us with this task.

  • 30 Jan 2024

Digital marketing has become indispensable in business. From search engine optimization (SEO) to social media strategy, digital marketing allows businesses to connect with consumers like never before.

According to the agency Social Shepherd , digital ads can boost brand awareness with prospective customers by a staggering 80 percent.

To keep up with the market’s evolving needs, you need to understand what digital marketing is and the skills that can enable you to excel.

Access your free e-book today.

What Is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing comprises strategies and techniques for using digital channels, platforms, and technologies to connect with your target audience .

While traditional forms of marketing—like print advertising and TV commercials—can be effective, the emergence of e-commerce, social media, and mobile technologies have drastically changed consumer behavior .

“These technologies completely changed the way consumers connect with brands, how they search for information, and how they buy products,” says Harvard Business School Professor Sunil Gupta, who teaches the online course Digital Marketing Strategy . “They’re the reason digital marketing has become an integral and important part of every company.”

If you want to become an effective digital marketer, here are the skills that can help you make a strategic impact.

A graphic with text and icons showing 7 digital marketing skills to develop: technology proficiency, data analysis, search engine marketing, search engine optimization, brand development, email marketing, and social media

What Are the Top Digital Marketing Skills?

1. technology proficiency.

Technology proficiency is essential in digital marketing. To execute campaigns successfully, you must know how to use automation tools, software, and digital platforms.

Digital marketing tools include:

  • Customer relationship management systems
  • Analytics software
  • Ad management tools
  • Content management systems

By using these technologies, you can better understand, learn from, and segment your target audience. You can also identify emerging trends in consumer behavior to maximize your marketing efforts’ impact.

In Digital Marketing Strategy , Anne Lewnes, chief marketing officer at technology company Adobe, says understanding your customer is crucial to successful marketing.

“I don’t think marketing has actually changed fundamentally,” Lewnes says. “I think a good idea, a good product—those are always going to be core to marketing. I think engaging your audience with some emotional kind of stimulus is always going to be important. I think the thing that’s really changed is the ability to understand the customer deeply. So you need technology to be able to do that.”

2. Data Analysis

Whether using traditional or digital marketing tactics, data analysis—systematically collecting, interpreting, and utilizing data—is critical.

Channels you can collect data from include:

  • Social media platforms
  • Email marketing campaigns

However, data isn’t useful without clearly defined metrics or key performance indicators.

“At the simplest level, you need to measure what you set out to achieve with your marketing objectives,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy .

For example, if you’re interested in measuring your company’s brand awareness, you can analyze data from social media shares and mentions, your website, and customer surveys to gain valuable insights into prospective and existing customers.

3. Search Engine Marketing

Advertising is crucial to succeeding in the digital age.

As a digital marketer, it’s essential to strategically plan and execute search engine marketing (SEM) —promoting your website by increasing its visibility in search engine results through paid advertising.

“As a key driver of conversion in the customer journey, search engine marketing, or SEM, is a critical tool to have in your paid media toolkit,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy .

According to the course, campaigns fall into two categories:

  • Paid search: Bidding on keywords to prominently display ads in search engine results when users enter those terms, and then paying a fee each time they click on those ads.
  • Display ads: Visual ads on websites—such as banners, images, videos, or interactive media—that promote your products, services, or brand to your target audience.

SEM is particularly valuable in digital marketing because it allows you to create targeted ads that can have a greater consumer impact. Implementing SEM involves five components:

  • Choosing keywords that lead to your ad
  • Designing your ad’s content
  • Identifying the best landing page for your ad
  • Developing a bidding strategy for keywords
  • Analyzing results and optimizing content accordingly

Search engine marketing is more relevant when consumers actively search for something online. Keep that in mind when choosing what keywords to bid on.

For example, if you plan to travel to Boston, you might search for “hotel in Boston'' on Google. While several hotels will match those keywords, chains like Hilton could use SEM and bid on that generic keyword to ensure you see its website first.

“By investing in generic keywords, you’re more likely to attract a wider range of consumers who may not be familiar with or thinking of your brand when searching for a product such as ‘hotel in Boston,’” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy .

4. Search Engine Optimization

Another essential digital marketing skill is search engine optimization (SEO) —improving your website's visibility and ranking in organic search engine results.

Nearly 68 percent of online experiences begin with search engines like Google. Unlike SEM’s focus on paid search, SEO improves your website’s content, keywords, meta tags, site structure, and user experience so that web pages appear toward the top of search results.

According to Digital Marketing Strategy , search engines rank web pages according to:

  • Relevance: Whether content matches the intent behind your user's search query.
  • Authority: Your website’s credibility based on factors such as content expertise and brand reputation.

By understanding search engine algorithms and implementing SEO best practices, you can avoid spending too much on paid ad clicks and improve your website’s traffic, visibility, and user engagement at little to no cost.

5. Brand Development

According to a survey by digital asset management company Bynder , one of marketers’ top concerns is effectively engaging with consumers on crowded digital platforms.

One way to improve consumer engagement is through brand development —managing your company’s identity and reputation across marketing platforms. But it can be an uphill battle.

“Digital marketing can have a harder time building brands,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy , “building the imagery, and creating a story around the brand. This is changing over time, but typically, digital marketing has been focused on performance marketing rather than on brand building.”

Performance marketing focuses on meeting specific, short-term, measurable targets. For example, when consumers are ready to buy, performance marketing considers their Google search, what ad or owned media they click on, and whether they bought your product.

To account for their emotional motivations, you must focus on brand-building —the long-term process of building broader awareness and knowledge of your brand. You can do so by establishing a unique brand voice, visual identity, and messaging that resonates with customers so they connect with your products and services.

6. Email Marketing

Before digital marketing emerged, most companies reached customers through print mail and advertisements. But that’s changed. According to a study by technology research firm The Radicati Group , the number of email users is expected to reach nearly 4.5 billion by the end of 2024. Research also shows that the average time users check their email daily is 172 minutes, making it crucial to understand how to use email marketing.

Email marketing involves sending targeted, personalized emails to segmented groups of customers to build relationships, promote your products and services, and educate them.

It’s critical to balance broad email content for new customers with more targeted content for your existing ones.

“You have to use both approaches and balance them,” says Kate Laliberte, head of e-commerce at footwear company OOFOS, in Digital Marketing Strategy . “You have to have a marketing program that reaches a broad set of customers talking about the products and the company. But you have to be able to make it feel relevant to the consumer as well by sending some of those emails that are more focused on the activity or the actions they took.”

This means your customers should expect personalized emails featuring their names, tailored recommendations from their past purchases, and exclusive deals that align with their interests and browsing habits.

Another benefit of email marketing is that it’s budget-friendly.

“Email marketing is cost-effective because a company can reach consumers without paying ad dollars to Google or Facebook,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy .

By gaining confidence in your email marketing, you can nurture customer relationships, drive conversions, and increase your target audience’s engagement.

7. Social Media

Social media is one of the most commonly used digital platforms. According to data from Pew Research , nearly 72 percent of the U.S. population uses social media.

In an age of social influencers, your business must maintain a digital presence to ensure it remains relevant to consumers.

Social media platforms your business can use include:

While Facebook is the most popular , you should understand how to incorporate other channels in your digital marketing plan. Doing so enables you to engage with a more diverse audience and gain additional consumer insights.

“In contrast to surveys and focus groups to gain customer insights, social media provides a free and unfiltered forum for companies to become aware of and understand their consumers’ attitudes and behaviors,” Gupta says in Digital Marketing Strategy .

By capitalizing on social media, you can better understand your customers’ preferences and enhance your marketing strategies.
