డీఎస్‌పీ సినిమాలో మిడిల్ క్లాస్‌ యువ‌కుడిగా, పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్‌గా డిఫ‌రెంట్ షేడ్స్ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌లో విజ‌య్ సేతుప‌తి క‌నిపించాడు. కామెడీతో పాటు ఎమోష‌న్స్‌కు ఇంపార్టెన్స్ ఉన్న క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌ను ఈజీగా చేసేశాడు. అత‌డు త‌ప్ప సినిమాలో మిగిలిన క్యారెక్ట‌ర్ ఏవి ఆక‌ట్టుకోవు. హీరోయిన్ గురించి చెప్ప‌డానికి ఏం లేదు. కామెడీ పీస్‌లా మాత్ర‌మే క‌నిపిస్తుంది. విల‌న్‌గా బాహుబ‌లి ప్ర‌భాక‌ర్ న‌టించాడు. త‌మిళ నేటివిటీ కోసం అత‌డికి విగ్ పెట్టి చూపించిన విధానం బాగాలేదు.

Here are 10 honest thoughts I had while watching Vijay Sethupathi's DSP. The film is directed by Ponram whose previous hit was Sivakarthikeyan's Varutha Padaatha Vaalibar Sangam

1.Let’s play a game. Tell me how many film names you can think of with this storyline.

There is a naïve hero who is from a humble family, and a goon who controls the locality where they reside. Our hero crosses paths with the villain, who hurts him, and then it's time for revenge. Meanwhile, sprinkle in some mother/father or sibling-related melodrama as per your requirement. And also add a whirlwind romance with our run-of-the-mill heroine.

Vijay Sethupathi’s DSP joins the long list of template commercial films that include Thalapthy Vijay’s Thirupaachi and Vishal’s Thimiru.

2.My friend and I spoke about DSP after watching it. We both felt it was a stereotypical revenge drama from the 90s. It was so stereotypical that my friend said it reminded her of the typical response—'Hmm'—that she gets from her crush every time she texts him. And I was like, "Wait what, you get a reply when you text your crush? I never get a response."

3. Vijay Sethupathi’s character is called 'Vasco da Gama' in the film. I know that’s not how our heroes are usually named. It sounds quirky, which increases your curiosity to know the significance behind it. How is his character connected to the Portuguese explorer that he is named after? If you thought you’d get the answer to it, you won't. Director Ponram behaves like our dad when we ask him for permission to go on a Goa trip with friends. You don’t know the reason till the end, but you get 'no' as an answer.

4.However, the villain in the film has a fair reason behind why he is called Muttai Ravi (which translates to 'Egg' Ravi). But it doesn't matter because the name is more hilarious than powerful or terrifying.

5.Vasco da Gama is an unemployed, happy-go-lucky guy who likes to play cricket and gets drunk with his friends. His dad has been struggling to help him land a government job for a while. At some point, after facing a crisis, Vasco is forced to leave his hometown. When he returns from exile, he appears as a Deputy Superintendent of Police. How? We never know.

Given that it is a ‘cop job’, I was struck by the fact that he is not shown to put himself through physical or emotional strain, nor is he required to study for any exams. I wish my life could change overnight like this without any hard work.

6.In an apparently power-packed action sequence, the villain and the hero take a break to sip hot tea and resume the fight. I was squeezing my eyes shut, unsure if it was real.

That unintentionally funny sequence reminded me of how my brother and I used to fight, take a break to have samosas, and start fighting again (okay, I admit, we do that even now). Anger and hunger are two emotions that switch more rapidly than you can imagine.

7.Do you remember how debate competitions in our schools made us speak both for and against a topic? But what if you have a skewed perspective on one side?

The film looked conflicted in how it presented police brutality. In one scene, it speaks about an important topic, 'encounter killings,' and how police officers are at times victims of politicians who use them as unofficial henchmen. However, it quickly frizzes out when custodial torture is presented as a humorous sequence.

8.Remember I spoke about how the film feels like it is from the 1990s? Because just for laughs, the characters call each other Loosu, Mental and Paithiyam , which are ableist terms. In addition, body shaming is packaged as comedy specifically when a potential groom meets our hero’s sister.

9.In a particular scene, a bunch of police officers are shown chilling in the police station during work, ogling at Samantha and grooving to ' Oo Antava' from Allu Arjun's Pushpa . The song's entire purpose was to criticize men's perversities and send a message that... Okay, never mind.

10.Let’s talk about the music in DSP . It was mediocre, like my dating life. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that the film's music is composed by national award winner D Imman. However, the silver lining is that the background score wasn't too bad. It was at least refreshing to see a song ' Nalla Iruma ' about wishing an ex-partner well rather than cursing them.

DSP movie review: Vijay Sethupathi’s latest is as generic as it can get

Dsp movie review: vijay sethupathi's collaboration with ponram, who is known for jolly entertainers, has only yielded a bland and middling affair..

A few minutes into DSP, I knew we have all seen this film several times. It is the same old story about a formidable gangster in a small town giving purpose to a directionless protagonist by killing one or two of his beloved friends or family members. Vascodagama (Vijay Sethupathi) is ambitionless like the movie. With his father’s voluntary approval, he wanders around town and has a good time boozing on his uncle’s terrace with friends. Other times, he is seen ragging a neighborhood girl Annapoorni (Anukreethy Vas). It’s alright because she actually enjoys his attention. So, in a way, our villain, Mutta Ravi (Prabhakar) does a favor to the hero by killing his uncle which propels him to become a police officer. That’s why I like villains of such films because they are at least up to something. It’s one thing for the hero to not have a purpose and another for the film. But if it’s going to be just chronicles of this loafer, he better be doing something interesting.

Unfortunately, the film and the hero doesn’t do much till the interval. The conflict arrives only when Vascodagama embarrasses the villain by thrashing him in public. As Mutta Ravi is a formidable force for a middle-class person like our hero, Vascodagama goes into exile only to return as a cop. It’s not a problem if there’s no logic in a commercial entertainer, but here there’s no entertainment as well. The intended comedy sequences draw a blank. There are a few quirks that are interesting like the characterisation of Mutta Ravi for instance. His self-awareness and moral code coupled with an adequate performance from Prabhakar make him a well-rounded character.

On the other hand, Vascodagama doesn’t seem to have a distinguished personality. Like always, Vijay Sethupathi’s presence makes things bearable, but there is no edge to his character. I couldn’t help but compare the film with the actor’s Sethupathi (2016), which was also a cop drama. It was a great example of how a film, despite its generic storyline, can be enjoyable when it has a personality. Sethupathi worked because the protagonist had great character depth and the conflict was well-defined and immediate. In DSP, everything is loosely-written and we don’t invest our emotions. Hence, when the hero takes his revenge, we don’t get that catharsis.

The bigger problem with DSP is it doesn’t warrant the long runtime when Ponram is only repeating himself with some generic stuff like underwhelming songs and comedy sequences. Recently, Hollywood legend James Cameron said it’s okay to take bathroom breaks during his upcoming Avatar 2 as the film is too long. He said, “They can see the scene they missed when they come to see it again.” It applies to DSP as well, because like I said, we have seen this film in the past and we will see it again.

Forget PM Modi, the busiest person in this country is none other than Makkal Selvan who seems to appear on our screens nearly every week in any format, from theatrical releases to OTT stuff, and in any language, from Tamil to Malayalam to Telugu and soon to arrive in Hindi as well. As I get into the theatre to watch his new venture DSP , I wonder whoever plans time-schedules for the National Award-winning actor would be having one of the most hectic jobs in the world.  Kamal Haasan and Vijay Sethupathi to Reunite After Vikram for Thunivu Director H Vinoth's Next - Reports .

Let me clarify something, though. No matter how much he over-exposes himself as an actor these days, Vijay Sethupathi is always a delight to watch on screen. But when he appears in stuff that feels way below his calibre is when I get this feeling VJS needs to take a break and go slow in choosing his projects. Now having said that, let me share my thoughts on the actor's return to being the main lead in DSP , a big-screen masala entertainer after quite some time.

DSP is directed by Ponram, and it is a film that is supposed to cater to the frontbenchers. The movie begins with Vasco Da Gama (Sethupathi) travelling in a bus and telling his life story to a fellow passenger. The first half of the film feels like a light-hearted version of Mohanlal's Malayalam classic Kireedam , that itself got a Tamil remake in Ajith-starrer Kireedom . These portions set up Vasco's happy-go-lucky nature and his family life in Dindugal, where he roams around with his friends, tries to find a job and have occasional encounters with the feisty Annapoorani (Anukreethy Vas). Soon enough, he locks horns with the local goonda leader 'Mutta' Ravi (Prabhakar).

When Vasco realises that Ravi is protected from the law by police and the politicians, he decides to enter the police force and soon becomes the titular DSP. The second half gets into the typical cop entertainers that we have seen in the past, that evolves (or devolves, how you want to see it) into a revenge saga, albeit still continuing its light touches.

DSP continues Ponram's trademark style of treatment of using rustic plotlines that appeals to a larger audience base and give it plenty of comic touches. On paper, it is the kind of film an actor like Vijay Sethupathi could easily shine in. But those expecting DSP to be something on the lines of Sethupathi , the far smarter cop film of the actor, would be majorly disappointed. Actually, scratch that. If you like Sethupathi the actor in any capacity, then DSP comes across a major downer, that treads along the familiar tropes and be a bore at that, even though there are quite a few comic scenes. While some of the scenes raise occasional chuckles, most of DSP's humour pass muster, while the whole subplot involving actor Vimal in a cameo is grating.  Michael Teaser: Sundeep Kishan, Vijay Sethupathi Starrer Promises to Be an Action-Packed Entertainer .

As for the serious scenes that pits Vasco against Ravi, they have nothing new to offer while the frustrating runtime of the film makes it seem that DSP  has has no plans to reach any sort of conclusion.

Yes, Vijay Sethupathi still makes many of those scenes somewhat watchable with his natural screen presence and performance, but the actor himself has raised the bar of some his films so high that his involvement in DSP is nothing short of a travesty. Sethupathi deserves better, and as his admirers, even we deserve to see him in better stuff.

Final Thoughts

DSP tries to sail hard on Vijay Sethupathi's charisma but offers very little challenge to him as an actor. Even for its genre, the movie has nothing new to say, and feels merely like being poured old wine from a dusty old bottle.

DSP movie review: This Vijay Sethupathi-starrer is a king-size disappointment, thanks to done-to-death elements

The biggest disappointment in the movie is the lack of consistency in presenting flashback portions

Story: A happy-go-lucky youngster from Dindigul locks horns with a rowdy-sheeter after an unexpected incident. The latter hatches a plan to finish off the former. Years later, they become a cop and an MLA respectively, but their animosity towards each other only grew over the time period. How is the smart cop going to set a trap for the influential politician?      

Review: Director Ponram, who is known for his penchant for comedy and back-to-back association with Sivakarthikeyan, surprised one and all when he announced a cop drama with Vijay Sethupathi. The challenge for the actor was to surpass the performance he came up with in Sethupathi, another cop drama, which was released a few years ago.

But unlike the successful Arun Kumar directorial which was a compelling cat-and-mouse game, DSP is abundant in so-called commercial elements which end up diluting the core plot.

It begins with Vasco Da Gama (Vijay Sethupathi), a care-free youngster from Dindigul, who is keen on securing a government job upon his father (Ilavarasu)'s suggestion. The latter seeks the help of Mutta Ravi (Prabhakar), a rowdy-sheeter, who is quite influential in town.

But little did Vasco know that fate had another plan for him. He locks horns with Ravi in a public place and beats him black and blue. The dreaded criminal decides to finish off Vasco, but in vain. Vasco and Ravi go on to become a cop and an MLA after a few years. How are they going to settle the old scores?  

Though the film has a done-to-death plot, involving predictable family emotions and silly romantic track, the story features ample potential to weave a neatly packaged commercial flick. But Ponram wastes the opportunity with weak character designs and ineffective comedy sequences.

The protagonist and the emotions related to his family are convincing, but his conflict with the antagonist lacks novelty. Both the characters becoming a cop and a politician respectively appear unbelievable. It looks like the director has purposefully resorted to a convenient backdrop to make their conflict intriguing, but it hardly entertains.

Some of the so-called smart moves from the antagonist to emotionally dominate the protagonist are as old as the hills, leaving us hardly any reasons to root for the latter. Vijay has come up with an earnest performance, but his physique has gone haywire and looks unappealing as a stern cop.

Prabhakar, as the ruthless villain, isn't bad, but the characterization lacks fizz, because of which their conflict doesn't engage us. The likes of Ilavarasu and Gnanasambandam are apt in their respective roles, while the female lead played by Anukreethy Vas doesn't have scope to perform. Imman's background score is okayish, but songs are below par and hampers the film's flow.

The biggest disappointment in the movie is the lack of consistency in presenting flashback portions. After a point, we wonder about the time period in which certain portions happen. A set of characters introduced as the protagonist's colleagues have nothing to offer. Some of the sequences, like the one involving a cameo by Vimal, add no value to the progress of the story and test our patience.

Verdict: The movie relies on several tried-and-tested elements, but hardly anything has worked in favour of the story that features weak characters.

Every time a Vijay Sethupathi film releases , one is not sure what to expect from it because he constantly experiments. However, this movie directed by Ponram seemed to scream action, cop, villain, romance, small town - all the ingredients for a successful mass film. Given that Vijay Sethupathi is an actor who is adored by the masses and has done cop roles where he was loved, it looked like this movie was on the right track before release.

DSP is set in Dindugal where Vascodagama (Vijay Sethupathi), the son of a successful flower shop owner, gets into a serious fight with the local rowdy Muttai Ravi. Please note that the villain is called Muttai, which means egg in English, because his family supplies eggs to that entire area and beyond. What happens when the two lock horns? Vascodagama is banished from his town and is not even able to attend his sister’s wedding because his family is scared he will be killed. To extract his revenge, Vascodagama joins the police force and returns as a DSP to nab Muttai Ravi.

The storyline of this film is not new and the treatment is shoddy. For most of the first half, Vijay Sethupathi is a no-gooder who is behind Annapoorni (Anukeerthy Vyas) and suddenly he ends up being DSP. A far-fetched plot indeed. Vijay Sethupathi carries off all his roles very coolly, but in this movie, Vascodagama makes a mockery of the police force and his cop team is like a bunch of clowns. The director’s desire to introduce comedy through them doesn’t elicit laughs but is quite cringe-worthy. And some of the dialogues in the film are very amateurish as well.

Anukeerthy Vyas looks out of place in this film as the village belle. Her acting chops are not great and she doesn’t have much of a role either except for a few scenes and some songs. The pairing between her and Vijay Sethupathi is just off.

Vemal comes in a cameo and makes a good impact on screen. There are many small characters - like in most Ponram films - but they don’t really add any value to the film. Prabhakar as Muttai Ravi does a decent job. D Imman’s songs are average but the background music is better.

On the whole, this movie is a complete miss. Vijay Sethupathi is an extremely talented actor but he needs to make more prudent choices when it comes to his films. His fans will enjoy DSP much more than those who love good cinema. ‘DSP’ Tamil movie review: Vijay Sethupathi’s action-comedy delivers no kicks or laughs

Instead of hair-rising moments, ponram’s cop film evokes the lethargy of a lazy sunday afternoon.

Every once in a while, comes a Tamil film that makes you apologise for judging it by its trailer, that surprises you by transcending its genre, that makes you wish it never got over, that you would like to rewatch multiple times, and one that makes you feel vindicated about missing breakfast to come to watch it. Ponram’s DSP , however, makes you want to take out your phone and read work emails. Here are three reasons why work emails are better than DSP :

• You don’t have to sit through them for close to three hours and wonder what was the point of this whole exercise.
• You aren’t subjected to spurts of blaring background music by D Imman that could cause mild headaches. 
• Well, you at least get paid to read them.

The film’s trailer didn’t promise us some experimental, hard-hitting police drama that sought to challenge the system. So, one was ready to overlook the problematic elements — like the depiction of custodial violence — that usually come added with a ‘massy’ Tamil cop film. Apart from suspending disbelief, these films expect us to suspend some sensitivity too.

But let’s not crib about the lack of political correctness here. One was just expecting DSP to be in the zone of Vijay Sethupathi’s earlier cop film Sethupathi , which was decently entertaining. Ponram, too, intends the film to be in that zone. The opening scene proves that. A thug, sitting in his lair, guffaws at the TV news, which informs that he’s been hiding from the police for a while. Looking at the bloody face of a badly bashed-up cop, he tells his minions, “I cannot be caught by someone who is merely made of flesh and bones. A guy needs to have fire coursing through his veins to catch me.” Just as he finishes uttering those lines, he hears a loud thud that cracks the wall of the fishing boat he is in. Outside, our moustachioed man, drenched in rain, stands with a sledgehammer in his hands.

We all know that the hero will bash up the bad guys. But it’s up to the filmmaker to show us novel and interesting ways of him doing it. Instead of hair-rising moments, the action sequences evoke the lethargy of a lazy Sunday afternoon. It doesn’t help that Sethupathi also seems to sleepwalk through these scenes. He doesn’t look agile enough to conquer the bad guys. Sethupathi’s stone face – stoic and impassive – works beautifully on many occasions. But sometimes, you get a feeling he stretches it too far. In this film, it just feels lazy. He lacks the charisma of a cop in an action movie.

The antagonist, too, is cliched. He is just a big, loud, power-hungry guy (with a ridiculous epithet, of course). This film’s bad guy is called ‘Mutta’ Ravi because he sells… (email your answers to this writer and stand a chance to win nothing).

Ponram takes half the film to even establish the conflict, which is weaker than the falling Indian rupee. In between, he fills us in with some supposedly cute romantic sequences with Anukreethy Vas, some supposedly funny sequences with Pugazh, and supposedly sentimental family sequences with Ilavarasu and the rest of the cast. None of these things makes you feel . You don’t care whether a character dies or lives.

There is an unexpected twist in the climactic battle between the hero and the villain, where they take… a tea break. It kind of snaps you out of the movie’s monotony. Apart from this, the only other noteworthy thing is the hero’s name: Vasco da Gama.

While the Portuguese voyager of the same name set sails for unexplored territories, with this Vasco da Gama, you head right into the land of cliches.

DSP: Meet the characters of Vijay Sethupathi's film

Vijay Sethupathi starrer DSP , directed by Ponram and produced by Karthik Subbaraj's Stone Bench Films is all set to release in theaters on December 2, 2022. While the trailer of the movie revealed what characters each of the actors were playing, the makers have now unveiled individual posters for each of their roles. 

A cop entertainer, DSP has D. Imman for music and revolves around the tiff between Vijay Sethupathi and the villain, played by actor Prabhakar. How Vijay Sethupathi becomes a cop and seeks revenge on the villain in what DSP is all about.

Saripodhaa Sanivaaram Story (కథేంటంటే): సూర్య (నాని)కి చిన్నప్పట్నుంచీ కోపం ఎక్కువ. ఆ కోపాన్ని అదుపులో పెట్టడం కోసం తను చనిపోతూ ఓ మాట తీసుకుంటుంది తల్లి ఛాయాదేవి (అభిరామి). అప్పట్నుంచి వారమంతా ఎంతగా కోపం వచ్చినా నియంత్రించుకుంటూ, శనివారం మాత్రమే తన కోపానికి కారణమైన వాళ్ల పని పడుతుంటాడు. వారమంతా చిత్ర గుప్తుడులా చిట్టా రాసుకుంటూ, శనివారం యముడిలా చెలరేగిపోతాడన్న మాట. దాంతో ఆ గొడవలు ఇంటిదాకా వస్తుంటాయి. తండ్రి (సాయికుమార్), అక్క (అదితి) ఎన్నో ఇబ్బందులు పడుతుంటారు. ఎన్.ఎల్.ఐ.సిలో మంచి ఉద్యోగిగా పేరు తెచ్చుకున్న సూర్య చిట్టాలోకి సీఐ దయానంద్ (ఎస్.జె.సూర్య) చేరతాడు. తన సొంత అన్న కూర్మానంద్ (మురళీశర్మ)తోనే వైరం ఉన్న సీఐ దయానంద్ కథేమిటి?అతనికీ, సోకులపాలెం అనే ఊరికీ సంబంధమేంటి? దయానంద్‌పై సూర్యకు ఉన్న కోపం, సోకులపాలేనికి ఎలాంటి మేలు చేసింది?(Saripodhaa Sanivaaram Review) వీళ్ల కథలోకి చారులత (ప్రియాంక మోహన్) ఎలా ప్రవేశించింది? అన్నది చిత్ర కథ!

(ఎలా ఉందంటే): వివేక్ ఆత్రేయ (saripodhaa sanivaaram director) మార్క్ తెలివైన కథనంతో సాగే ఓ యాక్షన్ డ్రామా ఇది. విడుదలకు ముందు చిత్ర బృందం కూడా కథ కంటే, ఆ కథని ఎలా చెప్పామన్నదే కీలకం అంటూ ప్రచారం చేసింది. అందుకు తగ్గట్టే బలమైన పాత్రలు, సంఘర్షణకి వైవిధ్యమైన కథనాన్ని మేళవించి సరిగ్గా సరిపోయిందనిపించేలా చిత్రాన్ని మలిచే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు దర్శకుడు. ఏ కథ అయినా అమ్మ నుంచే మొదలవుతుందంటూ అమ్మ, ఆమె తన కొడుకు నుంచి తీసుకున్న మాటతోనే సినిమా ప్రారంభమవుతుంది. ఆ ఎపిసోడ్‌ తోనే సినిమాకి ఈ పేరు ఎందుకో స్పష్టమవుతుంది. కథ, పాత్రల పరిచయంతో కూడిన ఆరంభ సన్నివేశాలు కాస్త నెమ్మదిగా అనిపించినా, దయా పాత్ర ప్రవేశంతో అసలు కథ ఊపందుకుంటుంది. మలుపు అంకం నుంచి సన్నివేశాలు ఆసక్తికరంగా సాగిపోతుంటాయి. ఆ క్రమంలోనే పరిచయమయ్యే చారులత, కూర్మానంద్ పాత్రలు... వాటి ద్వారానే అన్నదమ్ముల మధ్య సంఘర్షణ, సోకులపాలెం కథలు వెలుగులోకి వచ్చే క్రమం ప్రేక్షకుడిని సినిమాలో లీనం చేస్తాయి. సూర్య, చారులత ప్రేమకథలో వచ్చే ఈగ స్టోరీ నవ్విస్తుంది. సినిమాలో కీలకమైన ప్రతి పాత్ర వెనకా ఓ కథ ఉంటుంది. ఆ కథల్ని వివరించే క్రమంలో కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలు నెమ్మదిగా సాగుతున్న భావన కలిగినా, పీటముడి, మధ్యభాగం సినిమాని మరో స్థాయికి తీసుకెళ్లాయి. సూర్య,చారులత దగ్గరయ్యే సన్నివేశాలు... చారులతకి సూర్య తన శనివారం సంగతిని చెప్పాలనుకోవడం, ఆ క్రమంలోనే వచ్చే యాక్షన్ ఎపిసోడ్, విరామ సన్నివేశాలు ద్వితీయార్ధంపై మరిన్ని అంచనాల్ని పెంచాయి. J. Ram and Lingusamy’s collaboration for a mass action drama has raised curiosity. While it marks Ram’s debut in Tamil, it also marks Lingusamy’s Telugu debut. This becomes a test for Ram and Lingusamy respectively. Will Ram & Lingusamy prove their mettle. Let’s find out whether they are successful in their mission or not.

What is it about?

Satya MBBS (Ram Pothineni) moves to Kurnool with his mother (Nadhiya) for his house surgeon where he meets RJ Whistle Mahalakshmi (Krithi Shetty). But honest doctor Satya is disturbed by the challenges from local rowdy Guru (Aadhi Pinisetty). He returns to Kurnool as Satya IPS and how he hunts down Guru forms the crux of the story.

Performances Ram is at ease as doctor Satya since he is seen as a soft, handsome and charming guy. When he transforms into DSP Satya he is not in full form. Krithi Shetty is okay as Whistle Mahalakshmi. She is good at songs and romance. Whereas her role is not ended properly and she goes missing in the conflict between the protagonist and the antagonist. Aadhi Pinisetty shines in the powerful role of Guru. He dominates with his performance. Nadhiya is alright as a determined and confident mother. But she is typecast for the role. Brahmaji’s plays dishonest police SI Devaraj which is also regular. Ajay’s character as villain’s side-kick is just filler and adds no value to the story. None of the other characters get noticed.

Technicalities Lingusamy picked up a story that is half-baked and fully predictable. While the characterisations of the lead were etched well, the director is clueless over weaving such a powerful story around them. He totally lost his grip on the film after revealing the crucial twist during the film’s interval. Devi Sri Prasad delivered good songs but he failed in giving thumping background music. But the songs placements do spoil the feel. Visuals are appealing, thanks to neat cinematography. The film’s pace struggles.

Slow & Predictable Screenplay Half-Baked Story & Dialogues Routine Climax

Lingusamy is a talented director who has delivered films like Anandam, Awara, Pandem Kodi and Run. But he had also delivered Pandem Kodi 2, Suriya’s Sikindar (Anjaan) that failed to impress. His latest offering The Warriorr, featuring Ram Pothineni, belongs to the latter. This is yet another disappointment from the seasoned filmmaker. The Warriorr takes off on a regular note where the hero is introduced followed by a song and then the hero shifts from Hyderabad to Kurnool where he meets his love interest (Krithi Shetty). There are some cute moments of romance initially. But they are not enough to take the story forward. The actual story begins when the face-off happens between Satya and Guru. The film’s first half is mostly managed by its treatment and the twist is saved for the interval.

Once the twist is unrevealed, the film turns even predictable. The DSP Satya’s mission is to take revenge on Guru and bring his empire down. After the interval, the film takes a nosedive. The director failed to sustain the interest in the conflict between the hero and villain. It is just a one-upmanship game that doesn’t interest the viewers. The scenes like the kidnapping of heroine and hero-villain track expected to work, but they don’t. The songs in the second half only obstruct the flow of the narration. However, songs may work for masses where Ram and Krithi danced well against nice sets. But the patience of critical audiences are tested here. The film is filled with scenes that are already seen in several old mass films.

The investigation of Dean Robert’s murder is also disappointing even after DSP Satya possessing a video proof. And the climax is even underwhelming where the hero lets go of such a baddie, guess why? Because he is a doctor at heart. The film also pays tribute to several doctor-police personnel in real-life. It is evident that a seasoned director suffers with second-half syndrome and the film failed at the script development stage itself. Despite good performances and nice songs, they can’t save the film owing to routine story and flat narration. Overall, The Warriorr is a case of ‘operation failed and patient dead’.

Bottom-line: War On Audience!

నాని తెలుగు సినీ  పరిశ్రమలో విభిన్న కథా చిత్రాలతో తన కంటూ ప్రత్యేక గుర్తింపు తెచ్చుకున్నాడు. క్లాస్, మాస్ అనే తేడా లేకుండా అన్ని రకాల సబ్జెక్ట్స్ తో ప్రేక్షకులను అలరిస్తున్నాడు. ఈ రూట్లోనే తనకు గతంలో ‘అంటే సుందరానికీ’ వంటి డిఫరెంట్ మూవీ చేసిన వివేక్ ఆత్రేయ దర్శకత్వంలో చేసిన సినిమా ‘సరిపోదా శనివారం’. ఈ రోజు ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా విడుదలైన ఈ సినిమా ఆడియన్స్ ను అట్రాక్ట్ చేసిందా లేదా మన మూవీ రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం..

కథ విషయానికొస్తే. .

సూర్య (నాని) చిన్నప్పటి నుంచి కోపం ఎక్కువ. హైదరాబాద్ లోని ‘సోకులపాలెం’ లో తల్లిదండ్రులతో కలిసి జీవిస్తూ ఉంటాడు. అంతేకాదు ఎదుటి వారు ఎవరైనా తప్పు చేస్తే.. వారిపై తన కోపం అనే కంటే ధర్మాగ్రమం ప్రదర్శిస్తూ ఉంటాడు. ఈ క్రమంలో అతనితో పాటు అతని కుటుంబ సభ్యులు ఎన్నో ఇబ్బుందులకు ఫేస్ చేస్తుంటారు.  ఈ సందర్భంగా సూర్య తల్లి అతని కోపాన్ని అణుచుకోమని చెబుతుంది. అంతేకాదు కోపాన్ని ప్రదర్శించడానికి వారంలో  ఓ రోజు పెట్టుకోమని చెబుతుంది. ఆ వారం రోజుల్లో అతనికి ఎవరిపై కోపం ఉంటే వారిపై  ఆ కోపాన్ని ప్రదర్శించమని చెబుతుంది. తల్లికి ఇచ్చిన మాట కోసం ప్రతి శనివారం  తన కోపాన్ని ఎక్స్ ప్రెస్ చేస్తుంటాడు సూర్య.  ఈ క్రమంలో అతను ఎలాంటి ఇబ్బందులు ఫేస్ చేసాడు. మరోవైపు ‘సోకుల పాలెం’ అనే ఊరు వాళ్లు ఓ సీఐ కారణంగా ఎన్నో దారుణాలను ఎదుర్కొంటూ ఉంటారు. ఆ సోకుల పాలెం వారినీ సీఐ నుంచి సూర్య ఎలా రక్షించాడు అనేదే మిగిలిన స్టోరీ. మధ్యలో మరదలితో లవ్ స్టోరీ.. కట్ చేస్తే ఇది  ‘సరిపోదా శనివారం’ స్టోరీ.

కథనం, టెక్నికల్ విషయానికొస్తే.. దర్శకుడు వివేక్ ఆత్రేయ.. తాను చెప్పాలనుకున్న దాన్ని సూటిగా కాకుండా సుత్తితో ప్రేక్షకుల నెత్తిపై మెట్టికాయలు వేసినట్టు చెప్పాడు. 2 గంటల్లో ముగించాల్సిన సినిమాను 3 గంటల కు ప్రేక్షకులను కూర్చొబెట్టి వాళ్ల సహనాన్ని పరీక్షించాడనే చెప్పాలి. పైగా చిన్నప్పటి హీరో ఎపిసోడ్ ను అరగంటకు పైగ సాగదీయడం పెద్ద మైనస్. హీరోకు కోపం ఎక్కువ. దాన్ని ప్రదర్శించడానికి వారంలో శనివారం పెట్టుకుంటాడు. ఈ సంద్భంగా తల్లి మాట ఇస్తాడు. ఇదంతా ఓకే కానీ... ఈ సినిమా మొత్తం హైదరాబాద్ లో జరిగినట్టు చూపించాడు. హైదరాబాద్ లో  సోకుల పాలెం అనే బస్తీని చూపెట్టాడు. మరోవైపు విలన్ సీఐ దయానంద్ అలియాస్ దయా (ఎస్.జే.సూర్య) పెద్ద హోదాలో ఉన్నా.. ఏదో సముద్రం ఒడ్డున ఏదో గుడిసెలో ఉన్నట్టు చూపించడం  అంతగా కనెక్ట్ కాదు. హైదరాబాద్ లో కథ జరుగుతున్నట్టు చూపించినా.. అదంత ఏదో సముద్ర తీరం గల ప్రాంతంలో జరిగిన కథలా సినిమాలో కనిపిస్తూ ఉంటుంది. ఈ విషయంలో వివేక్ కాస్త దృష్టి పెడితే బాగుండేది. పైగా సీఐ వాళ్ల అన్న ఓ రాజకీయ నాయకుడు (మురళీ శర్మ) అతను సోకుల పాలెం వాళ్ల ఓట్లతో కార్పోరేటర్ గా  గెలుస్తాడు. అతనితో ఓ లాండ్ డిస్ఫూట్  ఉంటుంది. దీంతో వాళ్లంటే దయాకు ఎక్కడో తెలియని కసి ఉంటుంది. చీటికి మాటికి తన మూడ్ బాగాలేనప్పుడు వాళ్లలో ఒకడిని తీసుకొచ్చి చిదక బాదుతూ ఉంటాడు.

ఈ క్రమంలో సోకుల పాలెంకు అండగా నిలిచేవారు ఎవరు ఉండరు. ఓ మీడియా సీఐ ఆగడాలను ఎందుకు ప్రశ్నించదు. ఎక్కడో ఏదో జరిగితే స్పందించే మానవ హక్కుల సంఘాలు వీళ్ల విషయంలో ఎక్కడా ఈ సినిమాలో నోరు ఎత్తదు.  ఆ విషయంలో లాజిక్స్ అడగ కూడదు. 

ఒక సీఐ ఒక ఏరియాలో ఎక్కువలో ఎక్కువగా అంటే ఐదారాళ్లకు మించి పనిచేయలేదు. కానీ ఈ సీఐ మాత్రం సోకుల పాలెం అనే బస్తీకి అనధికార రాజుగా  ప్రవర్తిస్తూ ఉంటాడు. ఓ సీన్ లో తన కారుతో ఎవరి కారును గుద్దితే.. అవతలి వాళ్లు సెన్స్ లేదా అన్నందకు ఆమె కారును నుజ్జు నుజ్జు చేస్తాడు. ఈ మధ్యకాలంలో చీమ చిటుక్కుమన్నా.. ఫోన్ కెమెరాలో బంధించి అవతలి వాళ్లు ఎంత పెద్ద వాళ్లైనా.. వాళ్ల గుట్టుమట్లను విప్పే సోషల్ మీడియా ఉన్న ఈ జమానాలో  ఓ సీఐ దాష్టీకాలను అక్కడి ప్రజలు భరించడం హారబుల్ అని చెప్పాలి. ఈ సినిమాలో నాని ఎలివేషన్ కన్నా.. విలన్ ఎస్.జే.సూర్య ఎలివేషన్ ఎక్కువగా కనిపించింది. తాను ఎంచుకున్నా.. పాయింట్ ఏ 90ల కాలంలో వర్కౌట్ అయ్యే ప్లాను ను ఇంకా 2024లో అప్లై చేయడం ఎందుకో దర్శకుడికే తెలియాలి. మొత్తంగా నాని, సూర్య మధ్య వచ్చే సీన్స్ ఇంటర్వెల్ కే సినిమా మొత్తం దాదాపు కొలిక్కి వచ్చేసినా... దాన్ని మరో గంటన్నర పొడిగించడం ప్రేక్షకుల సహనానికి పరీక్ష పెట్టడమే అని చెప్పాలి. పైగా ఎపుడు చిన్నపుడు కనిపించకుండా పోయిన అత్తా, మరదలి కోసం హీరో వెతకడం వంటివి సిల్లీగా అనిపిస్తాయి. పైగా చివర్లో సమాజంలో మన కోసం మనమే  అన్యాయాలపై పోరాడాలనే కాన్సెప్ట్ చెప్పాడు.  కమర్షియల్  యాంగిల్ ఈ సినిమా మాస్ ప్రేక్షకులకు నచ్చేలా తెరకెక్కించాడు. మరి ఈ సినిమా మాస్ ఆడియన్స్ కు  ఏ మేరకు ఆకట్టుకుంటుందో  చూడాలి.  ఈ సినిమా ప్రొడక్షన్ వాల్యూస్ బాగున్నాయి. జేక్స్ బిజోయ్ పాటల పరంగా నిరాశ పరిచినా.. బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ తో అదరగొట్టేసాడు. ఫోటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది.

నటీనటుల విషయానికొస్తే..

నాని నటన గురించి కొత్తగా చెప్పాల్సిన పని లేదు. ఈ సినిమలో తన నటనతో ఆకట్టుకున్నా.. ఎస్.జే.సూర్యతో ఉన్న సీన్స్ లలో నాని డామినేట్ చేసినట్టు కనిపించింది. ఎస్.జే.సూర్య మరోసారి తన సైకో విలనిజాన్నిఅద్భుతంగా పండించాడు. ఆ పాత్రలో అతను తప్పించి మరొకరికీ ఊహించుకోవడం కష్టం అనే రీతిలో నటించాడు. మరోవైప ఎస్.జే.సూర్య అన్న పాత్రలో నటించిన మురళీ శర్మ మరోసారి తనదైన యాక్టింగ్ తో మెస్మరైజ్ చేసాడు. సాయి కుమార్ నటన గురించి కొత్తగ చెప్పాల్సిన పనిలేదు. హీరోయిన్ ప్రియాంక అరుల్ మోహన్ కు ఈ సినిమాలో పెద్దగా నటించే స్కోప్ రాలేదు. మిగిలిన నటీనటులు తమ పరిధి మేరకు మెప్పించారు.
