It can be a little tricky figuring out which postgraduate degree is for you. That’s why we’ve done the work for you to clarify the differences between a coursework degree and a research degree, and where each could take your career.

The main difference between these two styles is coursework has classes and research has a thesis.

Postgraduate coursework: advanced classes

In a nutshell: an advanced continuation of undergrad-style learning.

Choosing a coursework degree means you’ll attend lectures and tutorials, complete assignments and sit exams – just like your first degree. You’ll be taught discrete units that are part of a set program and at a higher academic level than your undergrad.

Coursework degrees aim to deepen your knowledge and enhance your undergraduate degree with postgraduate training, focusing you towards a specific profession. Alternatively, you can use your undergraduate degree to pivot and pursue a new area of study at postgraduate level.

Honours is reserved for students who demonstrate strong academic performance in their final-year units. You may be invited to consider honours or you can apply directly . Harvard Griffin GSAS offers master of arts (AM), master of science (SM), and master of engineering (ME) degrees in a select number of programs. In addition, some programs confer a master’s degree en route to the PhD (also known as a “continuing” master’s degree, or a master's in passing):

• Ordinarily, students may receive only one master’s degree from Harvard Griffin GSAS. In exceptional cases, a student may earn, with the degree-conferring program's approval, a second master’s degree if they have met the requirements for the degree and paid one year of full tuition.
• A master’s degree cannot be granted in an ad hoc subject.
• Master's degree students must meet all of the Harvard Griffin GSAS common requirements.
• Once degree requirements have been met, master’s candidates do not need to register for the term in which they submit their degree applications.
• How to apply for a masters in passing 

Master of Arts

Students studying toward a master of arts (AM) degree must be enrolled full-time, complete a minimum of eight courses (32 credits) at the level required by the department, and pay full tuition for one year. Some programs have additional course requirements.

Master of Science

Master of science (SM) candidates must complete eight courses (32 credits) and pay full tuition for one year. SM candidates are not expected to continue to the PhD. Part-time SM students must complete the degree in two years.

Master of Engineering

The master of engineering (ME) degree is a two-year program of advanced courses with research leading to a master’s thesis. ME candidates must complete 16 courses (64 credits) including 8 research-oriented courses at the 300-level, complete a thesis, and pay full tuition for two years. ME candidates are not expected to continue to the PhD.

Credit Toward Other Degrees

At the discretion of the program, courses completed to meet the requirement for a Harvard Griffin GSAS master’s degree may count toward the academic requirements for the PhD:

• Courses completed to meet the requirements for a Harvard Griffin GSAS master’s degree may not be used to meet the requirements for another Harvard degree.
• Courses completed to meet the requirements for another Harvard degree (i.e. not at Harvard Griffin GSAS) may not be used to meet the requirements for a degree at Harvard Griffin GSAS.

A PhD candidate in one department may petition another department to award them a master’s degree if that department:

• certifies that the student has met the requirements and
• has voted to support the student’s petition and application for the degree.

To earn the full master's degree, students get to complete their choice of 30-credit hours. They can choose from over 30 elective courses in key areas: power electronics, embedded systems, photonics and optics, controls and communications, electromagnetics, and computer engineering.

Admission Requirements

A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better is  recommended for  applicants to be competitive in the application process. 

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are optional for admission. For those students who have a GPA below a 3.0, it is highly recommended.

Possession of or eligibility for initial NYS teacher certification in technology education will be verified as part of the admission process.

In 500 words or less, describe your personal achievements relating to your academic interests, and detail your educational and professional objectives with reasoning for applying to SUNY Oswego. This statement will help the review team better understand and evaluate your application.

Include a professional resume or curriculum vitae that includes your academic history, professional background and any accomplishments of note. This document should provide details that support your admittance to the program.

Indicate two names with valid email addresses. We will send an email request directly to the references on your behalf. These references should be able to speak to your character, work ethic and abilities. (At least one of these recommendations must be from your school district.)

RIT offers new master’s degrees in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and project management

Courses designed to give credit for prior related education and allows remote learning.

RIT has added three new master’s degrees to its portfolio: chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and project management. Students pursuing graduate degrees are able to combine advanced coursework with hands-on opportunities in laboratories alongside faculty-researchers.

RIT is offering three new master’s degrees designed to meet industry needs.

Chemical engineering and biomedical engineering programs in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering will include new master’s degrees as part of the engineering portfolio this year to meet demands in increasing renewable energies, personalized healthcare technologies, and diagnostic system improvements.

National trends indicate a growing need for graduates with the combined skills in engineering and in the chemical and biological sciences, engineering processes, and ‘smart’ technologies.

The graduate programs will have a mix of students from the established undergraduate programs, as well as new-to-RIT students from regional, national, and international chemical engineering programs seeking advanced degrees. With the flexibility of the degree program, the department also is seeing interest and enrollments from students from other science disciplines such as physics , said Patricia Taboada-Serrano , Graduate Programs Director.

“This will be achieved through a bridge program designed to provide the appropriate engineering background required for successful completion of an advanced degree in chemical engineering,” she said.

A dozen students have been accepted for the new program and will begin chemical engineering courses this fall. There are also eight BS/MS students enrolled in the program who are completing undergraduate work.

There will be several emphasis areas: chemical and mechanical engineering applications; microelectronic focus on semiconductors, photovoltaics, microfabrication; microsystems and quantum level systems; materials science; and advanced mathematics and simulation.

“The strength of our program is the design of its curriculum, as we are able to provide depth in content and advanced skills in one year of studies in the case of full-time students,” said Taboada-Serrano, associate professor of chemical engineering. “The timeline of the completion of the graduate degree enables our MS graduates to rejoin the workforce quickly if they delayed or interrupted careers to obtain a graduate degree. The compactness of our curriculum also enables working professionals to pursue our MS degree and complete it in two to three years.”

Similar to chemical engineering, the biomedical engineering program has grown substantially since it began 10 years ago. Today, 15 students in biomedical engineering (BME) are being integrated into graduate study through the BS/MS options. There are five new students in the stand alone master's program . It is a one-year, course-based program that features a Capstone design sequence.

Biomedical engineers combine knowledge of engineering with biology, anatomy, and physiology to create devices and systems to address the need for sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and solutions.

In addition to the advanced engineering degrees, 10 RIT students this semester are the first to enroll in classes for a project management master’s degree .

The 30-credit degree is approved for both in-person and online delivery.

Project management is a process for managing the successful execution of new initiatives within an organization for the sake of expanding the breadth of capabilities, services, and products offered.

“You can use this discipline in almost any field,” said Peter Boyd , senior lecturer and graduate programs director for RIT’s School of Individualized Study , which is overseeing the program. “It’s akin to software engineering in that you could work in numerous industries, from IT to construction to aviation or health care.”

“Project management is a growing discipline. There’s a growing demand in a wide range of industries,” Boyd said.

A  RITx MicroMasters in Project Management, offered by SOIS on the edX.org platform, is an additional pathway into the program that allows students to earn RIT course credit at a reduced cost, that can be applied toward the requirements for the MS in project management. 

RIT’s master’s degree in project management differs from others across the country because he said RIT developed a curriculum “that is responsive to a wide range of student academic and professional needs, employs non-traditional teaching models that place a greater emphasis on project-based learning, and similar active learning experiences.” RIT’s degree also promotes strong student/faculty mentor-mentee relationships and brings project management to industries that would benefit from it but have otherwise not traditionally embraced the discipline.

The degree program allows students to customize their courses for their degrees, providing a natural path of interdisciplinary study. This allows students the ability to better specialize to their specific interests, giving them a competitive edge in their field of interest and making them more valuable to an employer.

Of the 10 courses required to earn the MS degree, four are elective, so students may use advanced certificates or other courses already offered at RIT. The remaining six classes focus on the core topics of the project management discipline and align with the standards set by the Project Management Institute, the governing body for the field.  

One of those students is Dana Harp, who is taking the classes online from her home in Lewes, Del. She does clinical research remotely for Pfizer.

She received her edX project management MicroMasters in 2020 and transferred those credits toward a project management advanced certificate with RIT in 2021. She took a couple of years off from education and was pleasantly surprised when she learned RIT now offers a master’s in project management.

“I was always interested in getting my master’s degree,” Harp said. “My company has a great program to reimburse for education, so I have the opportunity to continue learning without having to pay for it all myself. And it will definitely open up more opportunities for promotion by having that degree. It will give me a leg up for the trajectory I want to be on. This is going to help me moving forward.”

Harp hopes to receive her master’s degree in the spring or next fall, and she’s excited to be one of the first students receiving the RIT degree.

“I’m lucky all of my earlier classes transferred over, and it’s really cool to see that some of the professors I’ve had in previous classes are teaching in this program as well,” she said. “I think it’s going to be really fun.”

This course combines the critical aspects of strategic planning and project execution into a cohesive framework, enabling students to synthesize the planning, executing, and controlling of project work. Students will also utilize metrics for strategic alignment and project performance evaluation, and use specialized techniques for navigating project constraints, ensuring team coherence, efficient resource management, and dynamic response to project evolution.

Strategic Execution and Project Control Recovering the Floundering Project

This course reviews the categories of a project's critical success factors (CSFs) and discusses their importance in project success. Students will research early warning signs of project failure and assessment techniques used to measure the presence, or lack, of CSFs and will apply that learning to case examples. In addition to learning how to identify a troubled project, students will learn a framework for executing a recovery of a challenged project.

AI-Driven Innovation in Enterprises

In this course, students explore artificial intelligence (AI) through the lens of enterprise innovation, uncovering how AI is reshaping digital modernization. Students will learn how organizations across sectors are harnessing AI to forge customer relations and enhance process efficiency. Students will also engage with case studies that offer insights and strategies to architect an AI-centric business model tailored to an organization's scale, sector, and data governance strengths.

Portfolio and Program Management Recovering the Floundering Project

Students will explore program and portfolio management, focusing on supervising and regulating interconnected projects to align with organizational objectives. Students will also learn key strategies for selecting and prioritizing projects, implementing effective management practices, and utilizing tools like earned value management for overseeing projects efficiently.

Field-Based Capstone Project

This course is built around a project that is designed to apply, in a comprehensive manner, the core areas of knowledge around which the MBA has been built. The project may be performed for a current employer, a sponsoring workplace or as an internship as either a service-learning project for a qualifying nonprofit organization or another organization of the student's choosing.

The MBA 590 Capstone course must be taken only after all other courses in the program have been completed.

In addition to developing advanced communication and analytical skills, and a strategic mindset, graduates of the master of project management online program will demonstrate a mastery of the following industry-specific competencies:

Albert Orbinati, PhD, is Assistant Professor and Department Chair for the undergraduate and graduate business programs at Champlain College Online.

Prior to Champlain, Dr. Orbinati's roles have included Assistant Vice President of Online Learning and Continuing Education at Medaille University in Buffalo, NY; Dean of the School of Professional and Continuing Education at Russell Sage College in Albany, NY; and Director of Online and Non-Traditional Programs at Utica University in Utica, NY. In addition to his career in higher education, Albert is a member of the U.S. military, and currently holds the rank of Major in the Vermont Air National Guard.

Students must have a  Bachelor  of Science in Nursing ( BSN) degree from an ACEN/CCNE/CNEA-accredited institution to be eligible to apply . Applicants must also have an active RN license and a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale in the last degree earned relevant to the program of study.

Program Faculty

Kristine Browning PhD, APRN-CNP, FAANP

Dr. Kristine Browning’s national program of research includes the examination of underlying determinants of tobacco use in order to further understand tobacco use behavior. Her work has examined socioeconomic disparities among the delivery of smoking cessation assistance by healthcare providers. Evidence-based smoking cessation interventions, including assistance, should be systematically delivered to all patients who are current smokers. Dr. Browning’s other work in tobacco control includes examining how principles of acculturation contribute to how Hispanic men and women misclassify their smoking status and state of the science papers that summarize salient tobacco control topics in special populations such as HIV-positive, low socioeconomic, and immigrants. Continued smoking after a lung cancer diagnosis remains a significant problem as it contributes to poor disease and treatment-related outcomes. Although lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality for both men and women, there is a paucity of smoking cessation intervention research with lung cancer patients. Dr. Browning’s research has examined smoking behaviors of lung cancer patients from the perspective of the Self-Regulation of Illness Representation and found that understanding the context in which a patient perceives their disease and smoking behavior may contribute to influencing behavior change. The MSc Renewable and Sustainable Energy programme aims to train future engineers to lead the global energy transformation, by addressing critical challenges relating to climate change, clean growth, and sustainability.

"The world is set to invest a record $1.8T in clean energy in 2023. This needs to climb to around $4.5T-a-year by the early 2030s to be in line with our net zero pathway" (IEA-2023).

In the World Energy Transition Outlook, the phasing out of fossil fuels will be accelerated. In 2050, renewable energy will dominate the world's electricity generation supply. To achieve global energy transformation and meet the Paris Agreement, significant job growth is projected, with 42 million renewable energy jobs expected in the sector by 2050.

If you're a recent graduate from an engineering-related discipline, this Master's course offers an opportunity to specialise and develop to become a future leader in this fast-growing sector.

The programme will focus on:

• providing you with knowledge, advanced methods and tools to address technical challenges in renewable and sustainable energy
• developing your professional skills to solve real-world problems relating to renewable and sustainable energy technologies

The course is delivered in our Faculty of Engineering and Digital Technologies by an interdisciplinary team, including external industry partners. The content is research-engaged, with academic staff providing research expertise in sustainable energy-related areas.

Entry requirements

A second-class Honours degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline, including mechanical, manufacturing, industrial, chemical, electrical, electronics, computer, biomedical, and civil.

Candidates who do not fulfil the normal entry requirements but have extensive industrial experience (minimum two years) in an engineering area/position are considered on an individual basis.

English language requirements

IELTS 6.0 with no sub-tests less than 5.5

What you will study

The curriculum is designed with a total of 180 credits.

You will study a total of 60 credits each in Semesters 1 and 2, plus 60 credits for the MSc Project module across the whole year. The curriculum may change, subject to the University's programme approval, monitoring and review procedures.

Learning and assessment

The teaching and learning methods have been selected to engage you in developing your knowledge and understanding of fundamentals in the area of Renewable and Sustainable Energy through formal learning opportunities including

• lectures and tutorials
• experiential learning through practical classes and lab sessions
• industrial site visits
• informal and social learning through team-working in projects and competitions

In this programme, assessments aim to solve real-life energy and sustainability challenges, the tasks will be interactive and realistic, to allow you to apply your used knowledge to current problems the field faces. You will undertake a variety of assessments to evaluate your knowledge, practical and interpersonal skills development throughout the course.

All the modules will have some formative assessment, and this may be in various forms including discussions or questioning from the supervisor, self-paced tutorials, online quizzes, group activities, etc. These formative activities are crucial if you are to make the best use of your learning experience and they are designed to prepare you for summative assessment. Summative assessment is how we grade the work on a module such as exams, individual and group coursework, and presentations. The details of this assessment will be available from the beginning of the module so that you understand how the grade will be determined.

The ARENA workforce study indicates that the job market in renewable energy will increase fourfold to 42 million jobs worldwide from 2020 to 2050. The MSc Renewable and Sustainable Energy focuses on developing both technical and interpersonal skills of students to ensure their success in the energy sector.

Graduates from the MSc programme in Renewable and Sustainable Energy can work in sustainable energy and related sectors such as engineers, energy system developers, researchers, and O&M management positions.

The University and academic staff have strong links with several companies in the industry including SSE, 1Energy, Ford Motor Company, Switch2, Cummins, etc. The context of the future energy sector is embedded in the programme curriculum and topics covered, e.g. advanced sustainable energy system design, operation and maintenance, future energy mix problems, energy industrial big data, sustainability and innovation.

Xavier university of louisiana’s institute for black catholic studies awards three master of theology degrees this summer.

Founded in 1925 by St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, Xavier is the nation’s only historically Black Catholic institution of higher education. This made it the ideal home for the Institute for Black Catholic Studies (IBCS). Established at Xavier in 1980, the Institute is a graduate program of pastoral theology whose mission is the formation of African American Catholics and others for ministry in Black communities and the church at-large. Each summer, IBCS faculty, staff and students gather on Xavier’s campus for an intense semester of graduate studies and continuing education courses. They are immersed in a rich community life of prayer, worship and cultural activities. Now, as the university approaches its historic centennial celebration, Xavier’s IBCS just celebrated its 45 th summer session with the commencement of three master’s of theology (Th.M.) graduates: Dr. Rafiqur Rahman, Fr. Patrick Hyland, S.J. and Fr. Joshua Peters, S.J.

Meet the Graduates

Dr. Rafi Rahman is an assistant professor in the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities Department of Religious Studies at Florida A&M University. Dr. Rahman received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies and Theology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. In his academic career, he has studied Religion and Culture, Islam, Judaism, Comparative Religion, Black Church Studies, Sociology of Religion and Inter-religious Dialogue. He spent Summer 2024 on a teaching fellowship in Rome, Italy. Although he missed the commencement ceremony, Dr. Rahman dedicates his Th.M. degree to the late Dr. Kirk Gaddy, who was instrumental in his educational endeavors at Xavier.

“The IBCS experience at XULA is not one that is solely concentrated upon the acquisition of a theological education to augment an individual’s academic competency in theology, history, Christian ethics, or Black Church studies per se. But, rather, it is about gaining and appreciating the skills, knowledge, and understanding needed to become a better person and create a more inclusive world that is tolerant of the Other,” said Dr. Rahman. “The life education I received and the people I have met at the IBCS have profoundly and positively affected my life – I am proud to be an IBCS graduate of the Xavier University of Louisiana.”

Fr. Patrick Hyland, S.J., is from Cleveland, Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Studies from Boston College. Fr. Hyland also received two Master of Art degrees, one in philosophy from Cleveland State University and another in history from St. Louis University during his formation as a member of the Society of Jesus. Fr. Hyland also received a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (S.T.B) from the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, Spain. His first assignment as a Jesuit priest is St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio.

“I was attracted to the Institute for Black Catholic Studies as a way to deepen my faith and commitment to the universal Church, which is far more diverse, talented, and hopeful than any single parish or diocese can possibly hope to represent,” said Fr. Hyland. “Jesuits are called to the frontiers, and one serious frontier in the Church today is the long history of African American Catholics.”

Fr. Joshua Peters, S.J. was born in Detroit and is a member of the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus. He serves as the Director of Mission and Identity at Christ the King Jesuit College Prep on the West Side of Chicago. Fr. Peters was ordained to the priesthood in June 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown, and this experience made him a priest who takes nothing for granted.

“I credit my family as well as the Black Catholic communities in Detroit, Cincinnati, Dayton, Oakland, Chicago, and New Orleans for helping me answer God’s call,” said Fr. Peters.

The IBCS, an interdisciplinary and holistic pastoral theology program, develops laypersons, religious men and women, and clergy for culturally competent, effective ministry. In keeping with Xavier University of Louisiana’s mission to promote a more just and humane society, the IBCS prepares students to assume roles of Black Catholic leadership and Christian service in a global society, drawing others to Christ in the spirit of St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.
