Driver Training Schools

Driver education (DE) and driver training (DT) are offered at public and private high schools and state-licensed driving schools.

If you are under 18 years old, you are required to complete classroom DE at a licensed DT school before you can get your  instruction permit . Your instruction permit will be valid after being signed by your professional driving instructor, once you have completed at least one hour of behind-the-wheel training. This training gives you the foundational skills, experience, and confidence you need to pass your driving test and become a safe driver for life.

Driver education (DE) teaches you about traffic laws, road safety, driver responsibilities, and avoiding accidents. It must consist of either 30 hours or 2 1/2 semester periods of professional classroom instruction (not including breaks or meal times) or a home study or internet training program. If you choose to do a home study or internet training program, it must meet the same requirements as classroom instruction. To learn more, check out the DE Curriculum .

Driver training (DT) gives you the opportunity to practice driving in real-world situations. DT must consist of at least six hours of behind-the-wheel training with a professional driving instructor. DT can’t exceed two hours per day, and if you’re in the car observing another driver, that time does not count toward your six-hour requirement. 

Selecting a DT School

Students can take DE/DT  in a California secondary school or in a state-licensed, professional driving school.

To ensure that your teenager receives the DE/DT they need, it’s important to select a driving school that you’re comfortable with, provides high-quality education and training, and employs instructors that are professional, respectful, and knowledgeable.

Here are some tips to help you select a driving school:

• Check the school’s license status on our Occupational License Lookup . The school must be licensed and bonded by the DMV. 
• Contact your local Better Business Bureau (BBB) . Driving schools aren’t required to be a member, but the BBB website is a good source of information for customer complaints.
• Compare tuition costs between driving schools and ask about any additional fees or charges to have a clear understanding of all expenses.
• Retain copies of all receipts, contracts, and other school documents.
• Make sure the instructors are licensed and pass qualifying examinations every three years or show proof of continuing traffic safety education. Check the driving school instructor’s license status by calling DMV at (916) 229-3126.
• Equipped with an instructor foot brake and an additional rear view mirror.
• Insured with the required bodily injury and property damage liability insurance.
• Inspected yearly to ensure that the vehicle is in safe and proper mechanical condition.
• Used for instruction only (instructors aren’t allowed to take breaks or conduct personal business during behind-the-wheel training).
• Ask the driving school for a telephone number you can use in case of an emergency (behind-the-wheel training often occurs when the driver training school is closed).
• Ask about the school’s policy for canceling or rescheduling a behind-the-wheel training session.
• Choose a driving school in an area you’re familiar with. It is easier to learn to drive when you know the streets.
• Driving school personnel should avoid any physical contact with your teenager, except in an emergency.

Driver training schools establish their own policies regarding the following:

• Program length and schedule.
• Videos and movies containing graphic scenes of traffic accidents (licensed schools are required to show at least 100 minutes of video).
• Behind-the-wheel driver training time requirements.
• Driver training routes.
• Make and model of driver training vehicles.
• Drop-off and pickup locations for training sessions.

Driver’s Education Certificate

The authorized DMV licensed driving school will present students with a Certificate of Completion of Driver Education which shows proof of participation and completion of the driver’s education.

If you are a minor, you may present a Certificate of Enrollment in an Integrated (Classroom) Driver Education and Driver Training Program certificate in lieu of the Certificate of Completion of Driver Education.

You must bring it when you apply for your permit at a DMV office.

Behind-the-wheel Training Certificate

The authorized DMV licensed driving school will present students a Certificate of Completion of Driver Training (completion of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training).

If you are a minor, you must also hold your instruction permit for a minimum of 6 months prior to testing and have their instruction permit signed by their parent or guardian indicating completion of 50 hours of supervised driving practice (10 hours during night time) with a parent, guardian, licensed driver 25 years old or older, or a licensed or certified driving instructor.

You must bring it when you test behind the wheel.

While the 8 best courses I listed are my favorite driver ed online programs to recommend to teens and parents in 2022, there are MANY other options available. I obviously don’t have time to review them all, but I very highly recommend you pick from one of the 8 recommended schools I listed.

While other good options might be available, the unfortunate truth is the majority of courses that offer driver’s ed online are getting really outdated with almost no effort whatsoever to improve them. Customer service is poor, glitches happen frequently locking teens out of the course, and worst of all they all pretty much cost the same. Do not sign up for a low-quality driver’s ed course when just about all driver’s ed courses online cost approximately the same.

Online Driver’s Ed FAQ (Updated For 2022)

As a former driving instructor, I have decades of experience interacting with teens and adults. When it comes to online driver’s ed, I tend to hear the same questions over and over again. This frequently asked questions area is designed to hopefully answer any lingering questions you have about taking driver’s ed online.

Is Driver’s Ed Online Better Than A Classroom?

There is not a direct answer to this question since all students learn differently. For most students, an online driver’s ed school is going to be better than a traditional classroom-based course. But what makes online driver’s ed “better?”

Why Taking Driver’s Ed Online Is Better Than A Classroom

On the other hand, for some students, a classroom might be better. Plus, students have access to a physical teacher they can ask questions to, converse with students to help better understand the study material, and many additional benefits that online driver’s ed schools can never replicate.

The answer really lies with each individual student. I think teens should be able to make their own choice and choose which option is best for them. Taking drivers ed online isn’t for everyone and some students really do better with a face-to-face classroom environment with an instructor at the ready to answer any questions that come up. So, just have an honest discussion about it, but if your teen chooses to take drivers ed online, I wouldn’t worry one bit about that.

How Much Does Driver’s Ed Online Cost?

This is going to vary by state. In some states, all that is required is a quick “permit class” that can be completed in a matter of hours. Those can sometimes go for $20 or less. In other states, the training is much more detailed and may also include driving instruction, in which case the course can run several hundred dollars.

In general, however, as of 2022 you should realistically expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $150 for a good quality online driver’s ed course.

How Does Driver’s Ed Online Work?

Online driver’s ed is pretty straightforward. You simply create an account and you’ll have access to the course 24/7/365. Pretty much any online driver’s ed course as of 2022 will work from almost any device. You can use your laptop, PC, smartphone, or tablet. Plus, you can switch between them anytime. How Do I Take Behind-The-Wheel Instruction?

Other online courses don’t offer their own driving instructors but work with schools that may be located in your area to get you a better price. And other online schools don’t handle behind-the-wheel driver training at all.

For the most part, your behind-the-wheel instruction is handled separately from your online training course. So, you’ll sign up for an online driver’s ed program, get your driving permit , then find a local driving school in your area that offers hands-on instruction with an actual driving instructor. The majority of your behind-the-wheel instruction can normally be handled by your parents as well.

Are Parent Resources Included With Online Driver’s Ed Schools?

I personally think online driver’s ed schools (and driver’s ed schools in general) should do more to include parents. However, most of the higher quality online driver’s ed schools do indeed provide parent resources such as parent-teen driving contract outlines , progress tracking, and sometimes detailed guides for parents.

Most of the online courses that offer these resources will proudly advertise them on their website, so if this is important for you to have, make sure that resource is stated or send them an email before signing up.

What Happens If I Fail My Driver’s Ed Online?

First of all, the vast majority of students pass. In fact, in some states, it is impossible to fail your driver’s ed course. If you do fail, it’s not the end of the world. You may need to re-enroll into the course, but it’s important that you grasp the subject material for not only your safety, but for the safety of those you’ll be sharing the road with.

The more common scenario is failing the written permit exam or driving test. This is not as uncommon as you might think. Failing either of these exams means you’ll need to go back and study, then retake the exam. Usually, there is a set number of times you may take the exam before a waiting period kicks in such as 3 months. The VAST majority of driver’s ed students pass before this happens, but again, it’s not the end of the world if this happens to you. Keep studying and pass the next time.

If I’m Over 18 Do I Need To Take A Driver’s Ed Course?

This will entirely depend on your state. In most states, if you are over the age of 18, you do not need to take a driver’s ed course. All you need to do is pass the written exam, vision exam, and a driving test.

In some states, however, you may need to take a driver’s ed course if you are between the ages of 18 and 21. In rare cases, you may need to take driver’s ed no matter how old you are if you have never been a licensed driver before.

With that said, in almost all cases, online driver’s ed for adults is way faster and much less detailed than teen driver’s ed courses.

Some Final Thoughts About Taking Driver’s Ed Online In 2022

A lot of teens (and parents) initially have this vision that taking driver’s ed online will be super easy and a “blowoff” type of class. I’d like to reassure parents and warn teens that this is not the case.

Taking drivers ed online is something that is timed, with quizzes after each section, and a final exam that must be passed. Students must learn about the rules of the road , types of roadway signs , right-of-way laws , school bus laws , driving in poor weather conditions , stats about the dangers of driving , how distracted driving or drunk/drugged driving impacts on our road safety , and all sorts of things that must be memorized.

This isn’t going to be a walk in the park, and rest assured, students will learn quite a bit going through drivers ed online. It’s all part of the right-of-passage for teens and this is how we’re doing it in our technological age. So have fun, and be prepared to learn. The rewards and freedoms that having a driver’s license provides is well worth it!

Course tuition.

A registration fee specified during registration will be charged to the STUDENT. This fee includes all required instructional materials and needs to be paid prior to course completion.

COURSE SCHEDULE

AAA, hereafter referred to as the COURSE PROVIDER, offers a course composed of 12 training units spanning 24 hours of instruction. Once the online course has been successfully completed and the final exam passed, a certificate of completion can be downloaded to the student. The course will be available to the STUDENT 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This availability may be affected by circumstances such as, but not limited to: system, site or connectivity failure over which the COURSE PROVIDER has no control.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

The COURSE PROVIDER prescribes minimum hardware and software requirements for completing the course. Minimum browser requirements are the use of Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) 9.0 or greater, Firefox, Google Chrome, or any other browsers that provide equal or greater functionality. The browsers need to support Java and Javascript. The minimum hardware required is such that it should be able to support the software configuration listed above. The course requires the use of a pointing device such as a mouse. The course recommends that the hardware be equipped with speakers. All students will go through the software evaluation after registration, but prior to the start of the course.

COMPLETION AND CERTIFICATION POLICY

The STUDENT agrees to complete all phases of the curriculum in order to receive a completion certificate. Any time missed must be made up. The COURSE PROVIDER is prohibited from issuing a client completion form if the STUDENT has not met all the requirements for course completion and a STUDENT shall not accept a completion form under such circumstances. STUDENT may be required to pay fees to COURSE PROVIDER if through no fault of COURSE PROVIDER, STUDENT requests a duplicate and/or reissue of the original certificate of completion.

GRADING AND PROGRESS POLICY

The STUDENT agrees that they may not be certified or given credit for the course unless they score 80% or higher on the final exam. Alternative testing techniques for students with reading, hearing or learning handicaps and policies for re-testing students who score less than 80% will be a) review of material; b) translation, if necessary or possible; and c) re-testing, verbally if necessary.

CIRCUMVENTION WARNING

The STUDENT agrees that HE/SHE, and not any other person, will study the material in its entirety and complete the chapter quizzes and the final exam. It is illegal to attempt to circumvent this online state-approved course or provide false information. If the COURSE PROVIDER discovers that the STUDENT has willfully misrepresented himself or has cheated, the STUDENT will be stopped from taking the course with no refund of the registration fees. In addition, the STUDENT may be prosecuted for perjury and other criminal acts which are punishable by law.

CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICIES

A full refund will be made to any student who cancels the enrollment contract within 30 days of registering for the course and prior to attempting the final examination. The COURSE PROVIDER will terminate, without notice, the enrollment of any student who has not successfully completed the course within 180 days. All registration fees paid are due and refundable when the course of instruction is discontinued by the COURSE PROVIDER, preventing a student from completing the course, or the enrollment of the student was procured as a result of any misrepresentation in advertising, promotional materials of the COURSE PROVIDER, or representation made by the owner or employee of the COURSE PROVIDER. All refunds will be issued within 30 days following receipt of a permissible request for cancellation.

PRIVACY STATEMENT

The COURSE PROVIDER is the sole owner of the information collected on this site. The COURSE PROVIDER collects information from its users at several different points on the website. The COURSE PROVIDER will not use or sell this information to promote products or services unrelated to this traffic safety course or in ways different from what is disclosed in the Privacy Statement.

REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES

STUDENT represents and warrants that the user information and registration information provided by STUDENT is true and correct, and acknowledges that the truth and accuracy of such information is a material inducement to COURSE PROVIDER in permitting STUDENT to enroll in the course. STUDENT further acknowledges and agrees that any willful or intentional misrepresentation by STUDENT regarding such user information or registration information constitutes a breach of this agreement and of the representations and warranties by STUDENT as provided in this agreement, and may subject student to liability for damages incurred by COURSE PROVIDER as a result thereof, including but not limited to general, consequential, and punitive damages.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

STUDENT acknowledges and agrees that the liability of COURSE PROVIDER and their agents and employees for any act, omission to act, or negligence on the part of COURSE PROVIDER and their agents and employees, is strictly limited to and shall not exceed the amount of the registration fee actually paid by STUDENT.

Can I take this class if I am under 15 years old?

How long does the course take to complete, does this course include practice driving.

• Because Florida Virtual School courses are online, there is no hands-on driving practice. However, this course does provide lessons and simulated driving activities to gain real-world driving knowledge.
• Driving lessons are highly recommended. After completing the course and earning a learner’s license, students are encouraged to take behind-the-wheel lessons with a local driving school. There are many free and low-cost options throughout the state of Florida. Florida Virtual School will provide you with resources for your county.

How does this course help me get my learner’s license?

• Upon successful completion of the Driver Education Course, you earn the required TLSAE certificate (commonly called a drug and alcohol certificate) and minors 15 and older can take the licensing exam (Class E Knowledge Exam) online for FREE.

Moscow Idaho Online Drivers Ed and Moscow Idaho Online Learners Permit Courses

Moscow Idaho Online Driver Education and Moscow Idaho Licensing Procedures

So you've taken your first step towards becoming a new driver in Moscow Idaho?  Congratulations! 

As you probably already know, driving is a valuable skill, but can also be extremely dangerous.  Therefore, to help new teen drivers develop safe driving habits during their first few years behind the wheel, the State of Moscow Idaho has implemented a graduated driver license program for Moscow Idaho drivers who are under the age of 18.

We’ve summarized a few things you’ll need to know as you go begin your process of becoming a licensed driver in Moscow Idaho.

Moscow Idaho Supervised Instruction Permit (aka--Learners' Permit)

To apply for a supervised instruction permit in Moscow Idaho, you must be at least 15 years old and have completed or be currently enrolled in a state-approved drivers education course.

When you make your trip down to the driver's license office to get your supervised instruction permit, you will need to take the following items with you:

• A liability form, signed by your parents
• Proper ID's (for a list of acceptable ID's please visit the Moscow Idaho DMV website)
• Proof of residency in Moscow Idaho

After you receive your supervised instruction permit, you may begin driving under certain restriction(s):

• You must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years of age, sitting next to you in the front passenger seat any time you drive.

After you've had your learner's permit for at least six (6) months, you will be eligible to apply for an Moscow Idaho provisional driver's license.

Your First Moscow Idaho Driver's License or Moscow Idaho Provisional License

• To become eligible for a provisional drivers license, you need to meet the following prerequisites:
• Have an Moscow Idaho supervised instruction permit
• No traffic violations over the past six (6) months
• Completed 30 hours of state-approved classroom instruction (with at least 10 hours of night driving)
• Six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel training with a certified driving instructor

To get your Moscow Idaho provisional license, you will first need to pass both a written test and a road test.  When you feel you're ready to go for it, you will need to take your supervised instructional permit plus the same required ID forms you took when you went to get your supervised instructional permit.

After you earn your provisional license, a few restrictions will still apply:

• All passengers must wear seat belts
• Adhere to all alcohol and substance abuse laws pertaining to driving
• No driving between 11pm and 5am without the supervision of a licensed driver who's at least 21 years old.

First violation of learner's permit or provisional license restrictions results a written warning letter. Upon the second violation, your license will be suspended for one (1) month.  Further violations will result in two (2)-month suspensions.

When you turn 17, your provisional drivers license can be converted into a full license provided you have had no traffic violations during the time you've had your provisional license.

Moscow Idaho Auto Insurance & Financial Responsibility Laws

Moscow Idaho law requires that you have a certain amount of auto insurance/liability coverage on any vehicle you drive.  Failure to carry this mandatory insurance can result in your license being suspended plus a hefty fine.

The minimum amount of liability coverage you are required to have is as follows:

• $25,000--personal injury (1 person)
• $50,000--personal injury (2 or more persons)
• $15,000--property damage

Moscow Idaho Drunk Driving Laws

Drinking and driving in Moscow Idaho is not tolerated in Moscow Idaho and the state's DUI laws are more strict than most other states.  Upon your FIRST conviction of a DUI, you will face the following penalties:

• Jail sentence ranging from 2 to 5 days
• Up to a $1,000 fine
• Suspension of your license for 90 days
• Possible enrollment in a substance abuse or alcohol evaulation and treatment program

Further violations will result in more severe penalties, including an extended jail sentence and the revocation of your Moscow Idaho drivers license.

Anyone under the age of 21 who is caught driving with a blood alcohol content level of .02 or higher will have their license suspended for one (1) year and be fined up to $1,000.   In fact, if you violate the age-related alcohol laws in Moscow Idaho, you could lose your instruction permit or provisional license even if you were NOT driving.

Moscow Idaho Cell Phone & Text Messaging Laws

Moscow Idaho currently does not have any laws regarding the use of cell phones or text-messaging devices while driving. 

Moscow Idaho Online Driver Education

Any person applying for a Moscow Idaho provisional license is required to take a state-approved driver education course consisting of 30 hours classroom time and 6 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel training.  For al ist of approved drivers education courses, please visit the Moscow Idaho Department of Education's website.

Moscow Online Driver's Ed Frequently Asked Questions

In most states, you must be at least 15 1/2 to take drivers ed for your learners permit.   You should check with your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) (or whichever state agency handles the issuance of drivers licenses in Moscow Idaho) to make sure that you are eligible to take Moscow Idaho driver education. 

Please be aware that although CyberEdDriverEd.com is sufficient for fulfilling driver education requirements in some states, in other states CyberEdDriverEd.com is only offered as a supplement to the driver education and/or training you will receive at a state-approved driving school.  To find out if CyberEdDriverEd.com will meet your state's minimum driver education requirements, we recommend that you check with the Moscow Idaho Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The Moscow Idaho online driver ed course offered by CyberEdDriverEd.com is about 30 hours long.  However, in some states where timers are not required you may not have to spend an entire 30 hours taking the course.

Please be aware that while in some states CyberEdDriverEd.com is sufficient for fulfilling your state's driver education requirements, in other states CyberEdDriverEd.com is offered as a supplement to the actual driver education and/or training you will receive at a state-approved driving school.  To find out if CyberEdDriverEd.com will meet your state's minimum driver education requirements, please contact your local DMV office.

You’re free to go to the Moscow Idaho licensing office and take the test for the Moscow Idaho learners permit as soon as you receive your Moscow Idaho CyberEdDriverEd.com driver education certificate of completion.  Depending on where you live, you may be required to provide additional documentation, such as parental consent forms, medical records, your birth certificate, etc. 

We strongly recommend that you contact your local Moscow Idaho driver's license office to find out exactly what paperwork is needed when you go in to take your Moscow Idaho learner's permit test.

The Idaho Digital Learning Alliance (IDLA) Driver Education course meets national standards for online learning and is approved by the Idaho State Department of Education.

The Idaho Driver Education Program is dedicated to teaching lifelong safe driving habits through its two-part approach: classroom learning (knowledge) and behind-the-wheel practice (skills and application).   Our online Driver Education course covers the 30 hours of classroom learning required by Idaho. You’ll also need to complete behind-the-wheel practice with an approved instructor on your own to qualify for an Idaho Driver’s License.

As with all IDLA classes, Driver’s Education classes must be registered through the Site Coordinator (typically a school counselor) at your local school district. Who Can Join?

• You must be at least 14 1/2 years old.
• Get a Supervised Instruction Permit from the DMV before signing up.

A new program is making driver education courses more accessible: Here's how

MILWAUKEE — New driver education grants are now available to low-income high school students who struggle to afford driver education courses in Wisconsin.

Common Ground of Southeastern Wisconsin spearheaded the effort to secure $6 million in funding for the courses because the $400 to $650 price tag associated with courses is often too expensive for teens.

Students, leaders, and community members gathered at an auto shop at Pulaski High School on Thursday to celebrate the rollout of the grants.

TMJ4's Ryan Jenkins spoke with Jahmorris Torres-Currin, who said that before these grants became available, the cost of driver's education was a barrier.

"It also put a stress on my family because nobody really has the money to afford that," said Torres-Currin.

He and another student, Kahlil Stewart, helped advocate for affordable driver education opportunities.

"I know that this is not just an opportunity for me; it's an opportunity for everybody," said Stewart.

Stewart and Torres-Currin collaborated with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) and Common Ground to secure the funding. Now, students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches at school in Wisconsin can apply to have the cost of any qualified driver's ed course covered.

The grants help connect teens like Torres-Currin to opportunities.

"You have now transportation in order to get to work, get to doctor appointments, get to school," he said.

They also help teens give back to their families. Stewart is hoping to help his great-aunt, who helps raise him and his siblings.

"Now she can get rest from working all the jobs that she works. Now all she got to do is call me and say go grab them, or get me something from the store, and I can do it," said Stewart.

Leaders say the program will also help reduce racial and economic disparities.

According to a 2016 study by the UWM Employment and Training Institute, only 30% of African American and Hispanic 18-year-olds have a driver's license, compared to roughly 75% of white 18-year-olds in Wisconsin.

Some also say the program could help combat reckless driving.

"I think the more that we start changing the narrative and getting the driver education and the licensed drivers out there, the better it's going to be," said Jodie Donabar with MKE REC and MPS Drive.

The new Driver Education Grant Program was made possible through bipartisan legislation signed into law in December 2023. Grants are available to qualified students in public, charter, and choice schools, as well as home-schooled students. Tuition is paid directly to the driving school of the student's choice.

Common Ground worked with the Wisconsin Insurance Alliance to secure $6 million and have the money allocated in the state budget.

State-funded driver's education ended in Wisconsin due to budget cuts in 2004, but the state still requires people under the age of 18 to enroll in a school or commercial program as a condition of obtaining a learner's permit and probationary driver's license.

Gov. Evers, WisDOT announce launch of new Driver Education Grant Program

Program explands access to driver training for more teens across the state.

MADISON, Wis. (WEAU) - Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced today the launch of a new program that aims to make it easier for low-income students to take driver’s ed courses and get their licenses.

According to a news release from the governor’s office, the 2023 Wisconsin Act 86 created a driver education grant program that will pay for driver education courses for eligible low-income students at approved driver education providers. The program covers driving school fees for 30 hours of instruction, six hours of observation and six hours of behind-the-wheel training.

Funds will be made available to eligible applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until they run out. Teens eligible for free or reduced-price lunch can apply for the program here .

Students may enroll in any driver education program offered by an authorized provider. Enrolled students will get a confirmation email with a coupon code they can give to the driver training school.

The program was funded by $6 million set aside in the governor’s 2023-2025 biennial budget. The 2023 Wisconsin Act 86 was signed into law last year.
