The overall length of the bar exam can vary from state to state. In most jurisdictions, it is a test that is taken over the course of two days. That may sound intimidating, but with plenty of preparation, you’ll be ready to take the test head-on and get your law license. In this detailed guide, we will answer all of your questions about the length of the bar exam, as well as provide some practical study tips.

How Many Hours is the Bar Exam?

In most states, the bar exam is a 12-hour test that is broken down into two days of testing . On the first day, you will take the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT).

On the second day, you will be taking the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE). The overall test has both essay and multiple-choice questions , so it is important to plan carefully so you have plenty of time for each type of question .

The two-day timeframe is a general window that you can expect for nearly every state. However, there are exceptions to this. If you live in Louisiana , plan to dedicate 21 hours over the course of three days to earning your law license .

In the past, California also had a 3-day testing timeframe , but has recently changed it and is now more in line with most of the country.

It is important to take note that some states have a jurisdiction-specific test in addition to the 2-day, 12-hour bar exam . Be sure to check your jurisdiction’s information to see if there are additional components required.

How Long is Each Section of the Bar Exam?

While the bar exam will take you at least 12 hours to complete, it is divided into three tests . The first day of testing is always on a Tuesday and consists of the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT). On the second day, you’ll tackle the big test , the Multistate Bar Exam (MEE) .

You’ll start day one with the MPT. You are allowed three hours to complete the two given assignments . For the first one, you will have either an email or a memo asking you to prepare a response to a specific situation using an area of law.

You will respond as if sending a letter, contract, or email to a client. You will have access to the needed information, such as files and a library, and you will be asked to give a thorough response in the allotted 90 minutes per assignment .

While splitting your time 50/50—using the first 45 minutes for reading and research and the second 45 minutes for answering the question—is the recommended approach according to the American Bar Association, you can break your time up and use it however you see fit .

It is best to try and leave yourself a few minutes at the end of the testing period for a quick read-through and the possible editing of your responses.

When you return from your lunch break on the first day, you will be taking on the MEE . This test will take up the remaining three hours of your day. The Multistate Essay Exam has six essay questions for you to answer.

Your test administrator will pass out packets that contain all of the questions so time management is in your hands . You will need to complete each question within 30 minutes to stay on track to finish on time.

It is recommended that, while preparing for the bar exam in the weeks leading up to the test, you practice with MEEs from past years. You can also browse past questions and answers for some ideas on how to respond to the essay prompts .

When day two comes around, it’s time to tackle the MBE . This is the big multiple-choice test that contains questions pertaining to many different aspects of law. This test has 200 questions overall , covering a wide range of subjects such as constitutional law, contracts, and civil procedure.

Since this massive test is multiple choice and it is broken down into two sets of questions, it is a bit easier to handle . You will have 6 hours to complete the Multistate Bar Exam . It is broken down into two 3-hour blocks. Before lunch, you will complete the first 100 questions.

After you return from lunch, you’ll finish the rest of the test . You will notice that some of the questions on the MBE take longer than others, so it may be hard to keep track of your progress. As long as you find yourself completing 15 questions every 30 minutes , you should be on course to finishing on time.

How Many Breaks do You Get During the Bar Exam?

During the bar exam, there is only one official break, and that is your one-hour lunch break . However, that does not mean you are stuck at your seat the entire time. Getting up and stepping away from the testing area is allowed and will keep you from becoming too burnt out or stressed . If you are making good time, you should definitely give yourself breaks.

Standing up and stepping away from your seat is a great way to keep your stress levels as low as possible on such important days. You can take this time to stretch your legs, go to the bathroom, get a drink, and have a snack so you can keep your energy level up.

If you just can’t bring yourself to leave your seat, at least set your pencil down, close your eyes, and think of something that isn’t law-related . Maintaining mental calm and focus is crucial, and although it may not feel like you have two minutes to spare, those 120 seconds could save you valuable time on the back end through increased productivity .

As far as your lunch break goes, pay attention to the restaurants that are nearby. Make sure you have a few ideas in mind in case one of the establishments is busy or not open. Many people choose to pack a lunch and bring it with them. You can also order room service to your room at the hotel .

How Long is the New York Bar Exam?

The New York Bar Exam, like most others in the United States, is a 12-hour test split up into two days of testing . On the first day, examinees will take their two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test questions in the morning and then complete the six Multistate Essay Exam Questions in the afternoon.

On day two, the Multistate Bar Exam is administered. It is a 200-question test containing all multiple-choice questions.

New York is one of the states that administers a state-specific test in addition to the 2-day, 12-hour bar exam. Candidates must first complete the New York Law Course (NYLC), which is an on demand, online course of approximately 17 hours of instruction relating specifically to New York law .

After completing the NYLC, examinees must pass the New York Law Exam (NYLE), which is a 2-hour online test containing 50 multiple-choice questions covering material in the NYLC.

How long is the bar exam?

The length of the bar exam is obviously related directly to your specific jurisdiction’s requirements, but for almost all states, it is two days. You complete 12 hours of testing over two full days.

How long does it take to get bar exam results?

For most states, students will get their results back about 12-14 weeks after the February exam and 16-18 weeks after the July exam.

How long to study for bar exam?

Component of a bar exam

The MBE is administered over a six-hour period and consists of 200 questions, with 175 of these questions being scored and 25 being unscored experimental questions. State specific test

The second component of the bar exam is typically a state-specific test that covers a range of legal topics that are specific to the jurisdiction where the candidate is seeking licensure. This portion of the exam often includes essay questions that require candidates to apply legal principles to hypothetical fact patterns, as well as performance tasks that require candidates to demonstrate their ability to perform legal research and analysis. Some states also include multiple-choice questions on this portion of the exam.

The Length of the Bar Exam – What You Need to Know

One of the last steps to becoming a lawyer, the bar exam, is a rigorous test that is designed to measure a student’s knowledge of various subjects in law, their application of these subjects, and their ability to effectively communicate their knowledge and opinions in writing.

With all of the subjects that need testing, you may be wondering: just how long is the bar exam? Read on to find out the exact length of this all-important test and everything else you need to know about its administration.

How Long Is the Bar Exam?

The bar exam is typically a 12-hour test. It is broken up into two days, with 6 hours of testing on one day and the remaining 6 hours of testing on the second day.

However, depending on varying state requirements, your test may have additional components that add more days of testing.

The Uniform Bar Exam vs. State Bar Exams

While these two tests are very similar, there are a few differences between them that can be helpful to understand.

Uniform Bar Exam

Currently accepted in 37 jurisdictions, the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) is a standardized bar exam created by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). This is the test that most law students will end up taking. It does not last longer than 12 hours and has standardized sections you can read about below .

One benefit of taking the UBE is that you can take it in one jurisdiction and transfer your score to another UBE-accepting jurisdiction within 3 months. This provides more flexibility over where you can be employed, and ensures you will not have to retake a state bar exam when practicing in a different jurisdiction.

State Bar Exam

The state bar exam is a performance test drafted and administered by individual states. California and Pennsylvania are the most notable examples of states that administer their own bar exam.

A state bar exam may have some or all of the components of the UBE, but will typically have additional sections that cover state-specific questions. These tests may also be longer in length – for example, California’s bar exam is spread across 3 days.

Sections of the Uniform Bar Exam

The sections of the UBE are standardized and will be the same across every jurisdiction. A state-specific bar exam may have one or more of these sections in addition to extra local law questions.

Multistate Bar Examination

The multistate bar examination (MBE) is a multiple-choice 200 question exam. This test will make up for one day (one 6-hour block) of bar testing. The test will be broken up into 100 questions in the morning block and 100 in the afternoon block. 175 questions are scored, and 25 questions are unscored experimental questions.

This exam section will test a student’s ability to correctly apply fundamental legal principles, analyze fact patterns, and implement effective legal reasoning. 25 questions each will come from these 7 subject areas: civil procedure, torts, evidence, criminal law and procedure, constitutional law, contracts, and real property.

The MBE is graded and scored directly by the National Conference of Bar Examiners.

Multistate Essay Examination

The multistate essay examination (MEE) is used to determine how effectively a student can communicate in writing. It makes up for one half (one 3-hour block) of a day of testing.

This section includes 6, 30-minute essay questions that challenge students to differentiate between relevant and non-relevant information, identify legal issues in factual scenarios, and create a reasoned written analysis of issues.

Essay topics include subjects such as torts, contracts, constitutional law, and family law. You can view a ranking of these subjects from most to least important here . The MEE is only graded by the jurisdiction which administers the exam.

Multistate Performance Test

The multistate performance test (MPT) consists of 2 90-minute exams that are designed to test a student’s application of real-life lawyer skills. It takes up one half a day (one 3-hour block) of testing and is given on the same day as the MEE.

Students will be required to complete a typical attorney task, such as completing a memorandum or composing a closing argument, within the time limit. Skills evaluated are the ability to apply relevant law knowledge to relevant facts in order to aid a client and the ability to analyze statutory, case, or administrative materials and apply applicable law knowledge.

The MPT is also graded only by the jurisdiction that issues the bar exam.

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE)

In addition to the UBE or other state-issued bar exam, the MPRE is required for bar admission in every jurisdiction except for Wisconsin and Puerto Rico. The test is a 2-hour, 60-question multiple-choice exam that evaluates a student’s knowledge of established standards surrounding the profession.

Some states, such as Connecticut and New Jersey, will accept successful completion of law school in place of an MPRE score. Each jurisdiction scores this test and sets their own passing score; questions will vary based on which jurisdiction the exam is taken in.

Keep in mind that while this test is not strictly part of the bar exam, it is a test that needs to be passed before bar admission is granted in the majority of jurisdictions. It is administered 3 times a year separately from bar exam administrations.

How Is the Bar Exam Scored?

For the UBE, there is a standardized set of scoring weights: the MBE weighs 50 percent, the MEE weighs 30 percent, and the MPT weighs 20 percent of the total score.

State-administered bar exams may weigh these sections differently, or there may be other scoring considerations due to added exam sections. Always check with your jurisdiction before taking the bar exam to understand the exact content and scoring requirements.

Are There Breaks During the Bar Exam?

There are no breaks during the 3-hour sections of the test; each morning and afternoon block is completely uninterrupted. However, there is a 1-hour lunch break given between these testing blocks.

You will have to leave the room during this break and can take this time to recharge and refuel for the next stretch of testing.

When Is the Bar Exam Administered?

The bar exam is administered twice a year. For the UBE, the MEE and the MPT are always administered on the same day (typically a Tuesday) at the end of February and July. The MBE is issued the day after that.

State-issued bar exams are usually administered on a similar schedule, but this can vary from state to state.

Many of the bar test questions you’ll see will involve contract law since it’s such an important part of the legal field. For a contract to be formed, it requires an offer, acceptance, and consideration. In this scenario, Jane made an offer to sell her car to John, but John did not accept the offer or provide any consideration to Jane. 

Therefore, there was no legally binding contract formed between them, and Jane was not obligated to sell the car to John. Since there was no contract, there can be no breach of contract, and John cannot sue Jane.

About the UBE

The Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) is coordinated by NCBE and is composed of the following components: 

• the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) , 
• two  Multistate Performance Test (MPT)  tasks
• the  Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) . 

It is uniformly administered, graded, and scored and results in a portable score that can be transferred to other UBE jurisdictions. 

Registration Information

Applicants register for the UBE by applying to a user jurisdiction for the bar exam. Applicants who have taken the UBE may transfer their UBE scores to seek admission in other UBE jurisdictions.

NCBE scores the MBE component of the UBE. Jurisdictions grade the MEE and MPT components. The MEE and MPT scores are scaled to the MBE and UBE total scores are calculated by NCBE. The MBE is weighted 50%, the MEE 30%, and the MPT 20%. UBE total scores are reported on a 400-point scale.

Examinees who take the UBE earn a portable score that can be transferred to seek admission in other UBE jurisdictions.

New York Bar Exam Format for 2024

The New York bar exam format splits the exam into several components  or sections . The exam consists of the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE), the Multistate Performance Test (MPT), and the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE). These exam components make up the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).  You must pass the exam in order to be admitted by exam (although you do not need to pass each section individually).  Additionally, in order to be admitted to practice law in New York, you must also pass the separate Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) .

Duration - How Long is the New York Bar Exam?

The New York bar exam is a two-day exam. The exam is given on the last Wednesday, and preceding Tuesday, of every February and July . Each of the two bar exam days has a morning session, a lunch break, and an afternoon session.

What is the New York Bar Exam Schedule Breakdown?

Day one: mpt and mee.

The morning session of the first day of the New York bar exam occurs from 9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M., and the afternoon session occurs from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.  The New York bar exam format for the first day consists of the Multistate Performance Test (MPT) and the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE).  The National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBEX) provide the MPT and the MEE.

During the morning session, the New York bar examiners administer two MPT questions. You have three hours to answer both questions.  Although you can use this time as you choose, the New York bar examiners estimate using 90 minutes for each MPT item.

During the afternoon session, the New York bar exam format consists of six MEE essay questions. You have three hours to answer all six questions.  Although you can use this time as you choose, the New York bar examiners estimate using 30 minutes per essay question.

Day Two: MBE

The morning session of the second day of the New York bar exam occurs from 9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M., and the afternoon session occurs from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.  During each of the 3-hour sessions, you must answer 100 mixed-subject multiple-choice questions on the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), which is drafted by the NCBEX.

Exactly How Many Essays Are On The Bar Exam?

The written component of the bar exam makes up a significant portion of your score.  In fact, in the vast majority of Uniform Bar Exam jurisdictions, the written portion makes up 50% of your final score.  But what does that mean in terms of what kind of writing you are expected to produce on the bar exam?  It’s not quite as simple as writing essay after essay for a full testing day.  In this post, we discuss how many essays are on the bar exam, as well as where the rest of your written score comes from.

How Many Essays are on the Bar Exam?

First, it is important to make sure you know exactly what kind of bar exam your jurisdiction administers.  Although nearly 40 states administer the Uniform Bar Exam now, and many more use the Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) as their essay component, there are still states that use their own format.  When wondering how many essays are on the bar exam, make sure you find the answer to this question for your specific bar exam.

For those in Uniform Bar Exam jurisdictions:

You will be taking the MEE as your essay component.  In these states, there are six essays on the bar exam.  Each state administers the same six essays.  These essays do not test state-specific law, just majority and minority approaches.  However, your state might also require a state-specific component in addition to the MEE, so keep that in mind.

In the vast majority of UBE jurisdictions, the MEE is worth 30% of your overall final score.  You will be expected to complete the six MEE essays in three hours, which means you should average about 30 minutes per essay.  You can learn more about how to approach the MEE, including formatting and studying tips, in this excellent free guide !

But that’s not all!  There are more than just essays on the bar exam, and on the written portion in particular.  UBE jurisdictions also administer the Multistate Performance Test, or the MPT.  This is worth 20% of your final score.  The MPT asks you to write two lawyerly tasks, such as a persuasive brief or objective memo, in three hours.  MPTs are different than essays because you are not expected to apply law that you call up from memory.  The MPT is a closed universe where you are given a set of facts and the law that this fake jurisdiction applies.  It is then up to you to draft a legal document that interprets the law and applies it to the facts to solve a problem or accomplish a goal.

Be sure to put in the time preparing for the MPT portion as well!  Each writing component is very important to your final score and requires different preparation.  With the MPT, practice makes perfect!  Try to practice at least one MPT for each of the different kinds of tasks you might encounter. Practice is important for the MEE essays on the bar exam as well, but you also need to make sure you have the law memorized!  When writing an essay on the bar exam, you will want to pick up as many points as possible by providing an accurate rule, a precise analysis, and a conclusion that follows naturally from that analysis.

By practicing your writing skills for both MEE essays and MPTs, as well as efficiently memorizing the law, you will set yourself up to do well on the written portion of the bar exam!

Does anybody else feel like they didn’t write enough on the essays? All of mine were only around 3,000 characters (not sure how many words that is roughly)

Tolyatti: A Russian Homage To Italy

This is the curious story of a Russian city named after an Italian politician, Palmiro Togliatti.

There are cities which were made great by men, and men which have been made great by a city. This is the case of Palmiro Togliatti — a founding member and the longest serving secretary of the Italian Communist Party — and a Russian city located in Samara Oblast, known as Stavropol on Volga until 1964, which was then renamed Tolyatti, becoming the greatest tribute in the world to an Italian politician. The city of Tolyatti was named after him immediately after his death in Yalta — a seaside town in the then Soviet Union — on August 21st, 1964, as a result of a sudden stroke and cerebral bleed. He was on vacation, on his way to give his support for Brezhnev as Khrushchev’s successor.

Who was Palmiro Togliatti?

If you happen to travel around Italy, you may have noticed that in every Italian city — however big or small — there is a street named after Palmiro Togliatti. That’s because Togliatti was not just the charismatic secretary and one of the founders of the Italian Communist Party, but a legendary figure of Italian and international politics. He started his political career before World War I, joining the Italian Socialist Party in 1914, then serving as a volunteer, and returning home to Turin after being injured. During this period he learned about the Russian Revolution and became fascinated, wanting to bring soviet ideas to Italy. He became a founder of the Communist Party of Italy, which was a part of Communists International (Comintern). In fact, after the end of Fascism — during which he spent almost 17 years in Moscow, becoming one of the highest representatives of the Comintern with the blessing of Stalin — he came back to Italy as Deputy Prime Minister until 1945 and taking part in the Constituent Assembly until 1948, writing the current constitution of the Italian Republic. Under his political and intellectual leadership — enough to be nicknamed ‘The Best ’ — the Italian Communist Party would become the largest non-ruling party in Europe and the second in Italy, after the Christian Democracy, which was consistently the most popular Italian party until 1992, when the Cold War ended and the danger of a ‘ Soviet ’ turning point in Italy was warded off.

Nevertheless, the Communist Party ruled by Togliatti had a big influence in Italian society, especially regarding culture, and achieved great results in local elections within particular regions of Italy. Togliatti chose to become a Soviet Union citizen in 1930, in fact giving up Italian citizenship. What may have seemed like complete devotion to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and its General Secretary Joseph Stalin, clashes with his next choice of refusing the head of the Communist Information Bureau proposed by Stalin himself in 1951, preferring to remain General Secretary of the Italian Communist Party. Throughout his career he supported his communist beliefs but fought to bring them to his beloved home country of Italy. Palmiro Togliatti wanted to fulfill his dream of a communist plan through democracy: the original ‘ Italian way to Socialism’.

Tolyatti, the Russian city

The Russian homage to Palmiro Togliatti was not chosen at random. In fact, a significant city was named after him: Stavropol on Volga became Tolyatti ( Togliatti Russianized) because right there — on the banks of Volga river — the Italian politician had a key role in building the popular AvtoVAZ factory, the manufacturer of the Lada car brand. And thus, in the 1960s, through cooperation with FIAT , the city took a new shape and a new name, because the old Stavropol on Volga was also covered by the Kuybyshev Hydroelectric Station. This infrastruscture was crucial for the development of a large industry. Therefore Tolyatti — just like what happened in Italy with Turin — became the working-class city par excellence, and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union made it a great vehicle for propaganda and experimentation. Many facilities were built, especially for sports, and new parks and monuments emerged in Tolyatti, which were made to represent the perfect Soviet city for the perfect Soviet citizen.

Not surprisingly, many popular athletes grew up in Tolyatti, such as the Olympic champion Alexei Nemov and the former ice hockey players Alexei Kovalev, Ilya Bryzgalov, Viktor Kozlov and Alexei Emelin. As you might imagine, ice hockey is very popular around there, and the local club sponsored by Lada is one of the best across Russia. Tolyatti, due to its vast spaces, has several monuments of national interest : Victory Park, a memorial dedicated to the Soviet victory in World War II built in the Auto Factory district; Liberty Square with its Obelisk of Glory dedicated to the fighters of World War II; the Mourning Angel standing in Central Park, a memorial to victims of political repression built after the end of the Communist era. Also the Transfiguration Cathedral, with its wonderful golden domes, was built after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Tolyatti was also the city where the great Russian painter Ilya Repin stayed for a brief period in 1870, painting his masterpiece ‘ Barge Haulers on the Volga’. The house where he stayed then became a monument.

Last but not least, among the most meaningful monuments of Tolyatti is ‘ Loyalty’. It is a bronze statue dedicated to a faithful dog, called ‘ Kostya’, who survived a car accident in which its owners lost their lives. Like what happened in Japan with Hachiko, Kostya wouldn’t give up, waiting for its owners for seven consecutive years at the same spot. Under the snow and the rain, winter and summer, the dog stayed there, running up to all the passing cars and hoping one day to again see its beloved masters. Only his own death let him abandon his spot, but Tolyatti citizens unanimously wanted to honor the loyalty of Kostya, building a sculpture in his memory. I could say no place was more appropriate than Tolyatti, because the city’s namesake itself represents a great metaphor of loyalty: that of Palmiro Togliatti to the Soviet Union.
