Department of Finance PhD Program

The primary objective of the Finance PhD Program is to educate students of exceptional promise to become outstanding researchers and university-level teachers in the field of finance. Graduates of the Program must have a thorough knowledge of the fundamental concepts and theories in finance, an understanding of financial instruments and markets, and an ability to use financial data to analyze models and evaluate financial decisions.

Program Structure

A student admitted to the Ph.D. Program in Finance is expected to have excellent aptitude, motivation, and preparation for rigorous post-masters-level study in finance. Students entering the program without a master's level degree or related coursework may have to take additional courses.

During the first year in the program, the student takes the graduate level course sequence in macroeconomic theory, econometric research tool courses and PhD level courses in asset pricing and corporate finance.

At the end of the first year, the student also must take and pass the Microeconomics Qualifying Examination (the second field exam) administered by the Economics department. During July of the first year, the student must take and pass the Asset Pricing Qualifying and Corporate Finance Qualifying Examinations administered by the Finance Department.

During the first year, the student works on a research paper that much be completed by November 15 of the second year in the program.

In the second year of the program, the student takes advanced PhD-level courses in asset pricing and corporate finance, the finance research reading course as well as macroeconomic theory courses, and additional research tools courses in econometrics and statistics.

After the completion of the second year, the student will take and pass the Candidacy Examination. The Candidacy Examination contains written and oral portions and must be scheduled before the start of the third academic year. The written portion of the candidacy exam is given in July between the second and third year of the program and the oral portion of the candidacy exam is given within 30 days of the written portion of the exam as required by the Graduate school of the Ohio State University.

During the third year of the program, the student takes the Finance Research Seminar course, and must complete the Thesis Proposal requirement. To complete the Thesis Proposal requirement, the student has to submit a scientific paper to the Coordinator of the Ph.D. Program by April 15 of the third year of the program. The Coordinator of the Ph.D. Program then evaluates whether the paper is good enough to be presented to the Thesis Proposal Committee consisting of three faculty members before the end of April. If the paper is deemed good enough at the oral presentation that it can develop into a job market paper for the student to participate in the job market in the fifth year, the student had completed the Thesis Proposal requirement. If the paper does not meet that standard, the student has to complete such a paper and defend it in front of a Thesis Proposal Committee by November 15th of the fourth year.

During the fourth year of the program, the student works on their paper to develop it into a job market paper. The student will get teaching experience. Once they have completed a paper that the major advisor believes is suitable for the job market, the student will present it in a seminar.

During the fifth year of the program, the student will go on the job market, complete the dissertation, defend, and graduate.  The student is responsible for meeting Gradation deadlines.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Administration and Policy is a cohort-based program that prepares students to conduct theoretically informed research through the application of social science methods that build knowledge and inform public action. Most students in the PhD program are interested in academic careers, although some find work as researchers at think tanks, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. The PhD degree is designed for students who are committed to a four-year, full-time degree.

The PhD program supports all full-time students financially during the first three years of study – funding includes tuition, benefits and stipend. Students have many options to fund their final year of study through teaching, fellowships or research projects. Throughout their degree, students work directly with nationally distinguished faculty on research activity with the expectation that students contribute intellectually both to the PhD program and to the academic community through presentations at national conferences and publication of journal articles. 

Our goal is to provide a stimulating and collegial academic environment where students learn to formulate compelling research questions, develop analytical skills to rigorously address them and produce high-quality academic work that contributes to the field.  All students gain nationally recognized qualifications in core knowledge in public administration and policy as well as in an area of research specialization. In their fourth year, students also have opportunities to teach in the undergraduate programs, if desired. PhD graduates are able to compete nationally and internationally for coveted entry positions that require both teaching and research experience.

Applicants are admitted for the fall only and should generally have a Master’s degree before enrollment, though exceptional applicants with only a Bachelor’s degree may also be considered.

Program Description

Degree Awarded: PHD Statistics

As a science, statistics focuses on data collection and data analysis by using theoretical, applied and computational tools. The PhD program in statistics reflects this breadth in tools and considerations while allowing students sufficient flexibility to tailor their program of study to reflect individual interests and goals. Research can be of a disciplinary or transdisciplinary nature.

Students must pass:

• one qualifying examination and coursework in analysis
• a written comprehensive examination
• a dissertation prospectus defense

Students should see the department website for examination information.

Each student must write a dissertation and defend it orally in front of five dissertation committee members.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in mathematics, statistics or a closely related area from a regionally accredited institution.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.

All applicants must submit:

• graduate admission application and application fee
• official transcripts
• statement of education and career goals
• three letters of recommendation
• proof of English proficiency

Additional Application Information An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of their current residency.

Completion of the following courses (equivalents at ASU are given in parentheses) is required. Applicants who lack any of these prerequisite courses must complete them before being considered for admission.

Funding Opportunities

Graduate appointments and assistantships.

Graduate students can receive financial support through teaching and research assistantships as well as through student employment and internships.

For the 2022-23 academic year, ASU's minimum stipend for a 50% academic year RA/TA appointment is $21,879. 

For the 2023-24 academic year, the estimated minimum stipend for a 50% academic year RA/TA appointment is $24,586.

Teaching and research assistantships are common forms of professional development and financial support for graduate students at ASU.

• Assistantships carry a bi-weekly compensatory stipend for activities that may be relevant to each student’s own program of study and contribute to ASU’s teaching and research efforts.
• Students holding assistantships must be enrolled for a minimum of six graduate credit hours per semester during the traditional academic year (audit hours do not count towards the six-hour minimum); additional credit hours may be required by the academic unit.   
• Graduate appointments can be either 10 or 20 hours a week and stipend amounts can vary according to the unit and responsibilities of the position.
• Graduate teaching and research assistant opportunities may be posted by the appointing unit (usually on their website or their college's website). Students are encouraged to contact those units where their academic credentials, skills, and experience match.

CHICAGO (AP) — Dorothy Jean Tillman II's participation in Arizona State University's May 6 commencement was the latest step on a higher-education journey the Chicago teen started when she took her first college course at age 10.

In between came associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees.

When Tillman successfully defended her dissertation in December, she became the youngest person — at age 17 — to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health at Arizona State, associate professor Leslie Manson told ABC’s “Good Morning America” for a story Monday.

“It’s a wonderful celebration, and we hope ... that Dorothy Jean inspires more students,” Manson said. “But this is still something so rare and unique.”

Tillman, called “Dorothy Jeanius” by family and friends, is the granddaughter of former Chicago Alderwoman Dorothy Tillman .

When most students are just learning to navigate middle school, her mother enrolled Tillman in classes through the College of Lake County in northern Illinois, where she majored in psychology and completed her associate's degree in 2016, according to her biography.

Tillman earned a bachelor's in humanities from New York's Excelsior College in 2018. About two years later, she earned her master's of science from Unity College in Maine before being accepted in 2021 into Arizona State's Behavioral Health Management Program.

Most of her classwork was done remotely and online. Tillman did attend her Arizona State commencement in person and addressed the graduating class during the ceremony.

Tillman told The Associated Press on Tuesday that she credits her grandmother and trusting in her mother's guidance for her educational pursuits and successes.

“Everything that we were doing didn't seem abnormal to me or out of the ordinary until it started getting all of the attention,” said Tillman, now 18.

There have been sacrifices, though.

“I didn’t have the everyday school things like homecoming dances or spirit weeks or just school pictures and things like that ... that kind of create unity with my peers,” she said.

She has found time to dance and do choreography. Tillman also is founder and chief executive of the Dorothyjeanius STEAM Leadership Institute. The program includes summer camps designed to help young people in the arts and STEM subjects.

She said her plans include public speaking engagements and fundraising for the camp, which Tillman said she hopes to franchise one day.

Tillman is motivated and has innovative ideas, said Manson, adding, "And truly, I think what is inspiring is that she embodies that meaning of being a true leader.”

Jimalita Tillman said she is most impressed with her daughter’s ability to show herself and her successes with grace, but to also understand when to “put her foot down” when choosing between social outings and her education.

17-Year-Old Chicago Girl Graduates with Doctoral Degree: ‘The World Is My Oyster’

"I feel like that urge to learn something new just never didn't exist for me," Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman said of her desire for education

A 17-year-old from Chicago has graduated from university after achieving an enormous accomplishment — obtaining her doctoral degree.

Dorothy Jean Tillman graduated from Arizona State University (ASU) on Monday, May 6, after earning her doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health, according to Good Morning America . 

It’s the latest in a long line of educational achievements for the graduate, who started dual enrollment for high school courses at just 8-years-old before earning her associate’s degree in psychology from the College of Lake County at age 10 and her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Excelsior College at age 12.

Tillman, who can now be called Dr. Tillman, told GMA that her family, and in particular her grandmother who was “part of the Civil Rights movement” had encouraged her to gain knowledge and “harped on the importance of education and consistently learning something always.”

However, she also noted that she herself had sought out achieving her own educational goals. 

"But the way I always held education so high on my own, aside from being raised that way, was [by] finding different things to be educated about," she shared. "I feel like that urge to learn something new just never didn't exist for me."

Tillman earned her master’s degree at the age of 14, and a year later, was accepted into the Doctorate of Behavioral Health Management program at ASU. In December 2023, she successfully defended her dissertation to finally earn her doctorate’s degree — becoming the youngest person to do so at the school, per GMA .

Dr. Lesley Manson, a clinical associate professor at ASU, who oversaw Tillman’s dissertation, described her to the outlet as "inquisitive" and "innovative," and noted that the student’s achievement at such a young age is a big one. 

"It's a wonderful celebration ... but this is still something so rare and unique," Manson said. "She has innovative ideas and motivation, which is wonderful, and truly, I think what is inspiring is that she embodies that meaning of being a true leader."

As for what Tillman wants to do next, she told GMA that she’s still “figuring out what my specific dreams and goals are" just like “any other teenager."

As for what's next, the teen tells PEOPLE she's looking forward to the future, which hopefully includes plenty fundraising and partnerships for her DorothyJeanius STEAM leadership Institute .

She also hopes to pass on a very important message to kids and families.

"I want to encourage parents to pour into the dreams of their children and for children to give themselves space to pivot when needed," the graduate says, adding that it's important "not to be so locked in that they don’t get an opportunity to explore other options."

Supply chain management incorporates the core areas of logistics management, operations management and supply management.

The PhD in business administration with a concentration in supply chain management is a full-time residential program for students whose career goals are full-time university research and teaching. The curriculum guides students in conducting high-quality research and teaching at the university level.

Students are trained to develop the capability to recognize problems related to supply chain management and frame these problems into research questions, which are then addressed in a scholarly way, and they are required to review, analyze, conduct and publish research. They are prepared to do this through a series of doctoral seminars and research methods courses and by participating in active research projects. Students also develop their teaching skills through assignments as teaching assistants or instructors. Teaching assignments typically take place during the last two years of the program.

The doctoral program requires the completion of coursework, the completion of academic papers for submission to journals, a comprehensive exam and a dissertation. The program is generally viewed as a five-year process. Most students serve in research assistantships for all five years. During the program, students are expected to actively participate in required courses as well as in seminars and presentations from colleagues, department faculty and visiting scholars.

Students also have the opportunity to teach courses during their doctoral program. Teaching assistantships typically are made available during the last two years of the program. This allows doctoral degree students to get research projects and manuscripts into the multiyear pipeline typical of accepted research articles. Through areas of excellence, centers and the faculty, the supply chain management program has special opportunities for industry-based research projects.

Coursework The program consists of a minimum of 84 credit hours of approved graduate coursework beyond the bachelor's degree. The department requires doctoral students to take 48 credit hours of graduate coursework in residence at ASU during their first two years. The specific classes must be approved by faculty members in the students' areas of excellence. Students are also required to take 12 hours of research and 12 hours of dissertation credit. A maximum of 12 credit hours can be transferred from previous graduate coursework. Moreover, students' plans of study must be approved in advance by their program chair.

Academic Papers Students are expected to work on academic papers for submission to journals during their doctoral program. Summer months are intended for manuscript writing for those students who have yet to successfully defend their dissertation proposals. At the end of each summer, all doctoral students are required to have at least one new manuscript ready for submission to a journal for publication. Faculty in the areas of excellence supervise manuscript planning and writing. The bulk of the writing is done during the summer by the students. Faculty in the students' areas of excellence evaluate the papers and provide detailed feedback and instructions for rewriting of papers.

Comprehensive Examinations Upon completion of all necessary coursework on a student's approved plan of study, the academic unit may initiate the scheduling and administering of a student's comprehensive examinations. The comprehensive examinations consist of a minimum of a written exam, and an oral exam also may be required at the discretion of the academic unit.

Candidacy Doctoral students are notified of achieving candidacy status when they receive a letter from the dean of the Graduate College upon passing the comprehensive examinations and successfully defending the dissertation prospectus.

Dissertation Requirements Students are required to present a dissertation to satisfy the research requirement for the doctorate. The dissertation is defended in an oral examination commonly known as the dissertation defense.

Students must be enrolled for at least one credit hour that appears on the plan of study or one hour of appropriate graduate-level credit, such as 795 Continuing Registration, during the semester (including a summer session) in which the student defends the dissertation.

Maximum Time Limit Doctoral students must complete all program requirements within 10 consecutive years.

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the W. P. Carey School of Business.

Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program, or a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.

• letters of recommendation
• a personal statement
• proof of English proficiency

Additional Application Information An applicant whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency regardless of their current residency.

ASU does not accept the GRE® General Test at home edition.

Applications are initially reviewed by a faculty committee using a portfolio approach. Materials are reviewed to ensure a good fit between students' goals and research interests and those of the department. Recommendations for action are then made to ASU Admission Services, which admits each applicant or denies their admission and notifies them in writing.
