Maths in French: Master the basics at Key Stage 1 and 2

Ellie Williams

Why not try a bit of maths in French next time you get the chance to visit France. Although it might be tempting to down tools altogether there are plenty of things you can do when on holiday to keep the cogs turning.

To help, it might be a good idea to think of maths in a foreign language? This will help your child to continue their development and have fun whilst away from school this summer. And, before you know it, they will be conversing with the locals using their newfound knowledge!

So, without further ado, let’s get started with some maths home learning – in French!

For anyone who is wondering, the French word for maths is mathématiques .

Now that we’ve got that out of the way… let’s take a look at some basic vocabulary together to get you started:

Numbers are a good place to start. Mastering these will help your child to start using French when you are out and about.

maths in french: numbers

Consistently reading these out loud and reciting them together will you push these terms into your long term memory.

You might then want to use these numbers in a holiday themed sentence. Perhaps:

Je voudrais + [number] + glaces = I would like + [number] + ice creams

For example:

Je voudrais huit glaces = I would like eight ice creams

Four Operations

Do we all remember our operations?

In maths, operations refer to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Fortunately, most of the four operations are the same as their English equivalents so it might not take long for your child to remember these!

  • addition = l’addition
  • subtraction = la soustraction
  • multiplication = la multiplication
  • division = la division

KS2 Maths Games and Activities Pack

KS2 Maths Games and Activities Pack

A FREE downloadable game and activity pack, including 20 home learning maths activities for KS2 children to complete on their own or with a partner.

Once your child has mastered the French for numbers and operations, you can then move them on to talking about shapes.

Why not try finding one of the shapes below when you’re on holiday? Perhaps a nice square piece of cake?

This will really start to get their brain working:

maths in french: 2D shapes

Try to encourage your child to incorporate their number and shape knowledge together in the sentence:

J’ai [number] + [shape] = I have [number] + [shape]

J’ai trois triangles = I have three triangles

Once you have mastered this vocabulary, why not move on to 3D shapes?

maths in french: 3d shapes

Again, try to encourage your child to use their shape vocabulary in the sentence:

J’ai [number] + [shape]

J’ai onze cônes = I have eleven cones

To improve memory retention further, it might be a good idea to print this vocabulary.

Sticking these translations up around your house (once you have returned from your holidays), will help cement the ‘maths in french’ connections made in your child’s brain.

DO YOU HAVE STUDENTS WHO NEED MORE SUPPORT IN MATHS?

The Blue Series "...books are very easy to understand. Explanations very clear!" "I LOVE YOUR PRODUCTS! Your approach to math is thorough and explicit -- simply great." "...well set out, logical and easy to use..." "It's working very well! ... We wanted something that worked according to the principle of mastery, which explained/demonstrated what was expected of the pupil, and assisted the parent in teaching. ... I love the way the pages are laid out - clear, attractive, appropriately colourful yet not cluttered and filled with distracting cartoon characters. It's great value for money, and I love the ebook concept allowing us to print out the sheets we want, or the whole book according to what we need." "I like their simplicity. They are cost effective and seem to have enough drill and practice." "...they did all the teaching for me..." "These books have allowed me to have more time with my family outside of work hours. The preparation of worksheets as you are aware are very time consuming and I have never found any books that have as much detail in explaning concepts and providing practice questions as your books do." "...Very easy to follow, nice examples, nice mix of problems. Good flow for my kids' pace..." "...I really like how easy these books make it to teach the kids their math. I also like that I have the ability to jump from grade to grade depending on where the kids need practice." "...The format and content is very logical and clearly presented." Learn The Right Vocabulary Words When Doing Math in French

  • Pronunciation & Conversation
  • Resources For Teachers

Once you've mastered how to count in French, you'll want to learn the words for basic math operations. Even if you're well past the age of passing math class, this French vocabulary will come in handy when you're discussing financial transactions, shapes, and forms, or calculating engineering data.

When more than one French translation is given, the more formal term is listed first.

l' = , , result le
l' + , sum la
la - difference la
la × , product le
la ÷ or / , quotient

le

2 plus 2 égale 4 2 et 2 font 4 2 et 2, ça fait 4
2 moins 2 égale 0 2 moins 2 font 0 2 moins 2, ça fait 0
2 multiplié par 2 égale 4 2 fois 2 font 4 2 fois 2, ça fait 4
2 divisé par 2 égale 1 2 divisé par 2 font 1 2 sur 2, ça fait 1

When speaking, as when doing addition or multiplication tables, you can even omit  égale ,  font , or ça fait : 2 et 2 quatre, 4 fois 2 huit, etc.

There is some debate about whether  égaler  should be conjugated in the third person singular ( égale ) or plural ( égalent ). According to Le Petit Robert,  égale  is more common but  égalent  is also acceptable.  Le Petit Larousse  uses only  égale .

ALGEBRA WORD PROBLEMS ON LINEAR EQUATIONS IN ONE VARIABLE

Problem 1 :

It took Thomas 25 minutes longer to do his math homework than to do his French homework. He spent a total of 2.25 hours on both subjects. How much time did he spend on math?

Let x be the time taken to complete his French homework.

Time taken to complete math homework = (x + 25) minutes

Total time spent for both subjects = 2.25 hours

1 hour = 60 minutes

2.25 hours = 2.25 (60)

= 135 minutes

x + x + 25 = 135

2x + 25 = 135

2x = 135 - 25

x = 55 minutes

Problem 2 :

Jesse earns $6 an hour babysitting for his younger brother. His mom gave him $71 last week. This included his babysitting money and his $20 allowance. How many hours did Jesse babysit?

Number of hours she is taking for baby sitting = x

Amount she receives for one hour of babysitting = 6

Her allowance = 20

6x + 20 = 71

6x = 71 - 20

So, she is receiving $8.5 for one hour of babysitting.

Problem 3 :

Carol and Cathy are each saving money for a vacation. Carol started with $25 and saves $7.50 a week. Cathy started with $10 and saves $10 a week. When will they have saved the same amount?

Let x be the number of weeks that they are saving.

Amount saved by Carol  = 25 + 7.50 x

Amount saved by Cathy = 10 + 10x

They are saving the same amount, then

25 + 7.50x = 10 + 10x

25 - 10 = 10x - 7.50x

x = 15/2.50

So, at the end of the 6th week they will have the same amount.

Problem 4 :

One weekend Bill earned 3 times as much as Jim. Tom earned $5 more than Jim. In all, they earned $60. How much did each earn?

Let x be the amount Jim is earning.

Amount earned by Tim = 5 + x

Amount earned by Bill = 3x

They added together = 60

x + 5 + x + 3x = 60

5x + 5 = 60

5x = 60 - 5

Problem 5 :

The Maxwell children have hired a caterer to provide food for an anniversary party for their parents. The caterer has quoted a price of $96 per person and is asking for an advance payment of one-fourth of the total bill. If the advance payment is $1200, how many guests are invited to the party?

Advance payment = 1200

Advance payment = 1/4 of total bill

Let x be the total bill

1200 = (1/4) x

x = 1200(4)

Price per person = $96

Let n be the number of guests.

Product of number of guests and cost spent for each person

96 n = 4800

x = 4800/96

So, number is guests were attended the party is 50.

Problem 6 :

Three children each contributed toward a birthday present for their mother. The oldest contributed three times as much as the youngest, while the second oldest contributed 50 cents more than the youngest. If the present costs $10.50, how much did each contribute?

Let x be the amount contributed by the youngest.

Amount contributed by oldest = 3x

Amount contributed by second oldest = 0.50

Amount in the present = 10.50

x + 3x + 0.50 = 10.50

4x = 10.50 - 0.50

Problem 7 :

At a school game, student tickets were 50 cents each and adult tickets were $1 each. If the total receipts from 900 tickets were $500, how many tickets of each kind were sold?

Let x be the number of student tickets and 900 - x be the number of adult tickets.

Total number of tickets = 900

Total cost = 500

0.50x + 1(900 - x) = 500

0.50x + 900 - x = 500

-0.50x + 900 = 500

-0.50x = 500 - 900

-0.50x = -400

x = 400/0.50

Number of student tickets = 800

number of adult tickets = 100

Problem 8 :

A salesman sold 200 pairs of slippers. Some were sold at $6 per pair and the remainder were sold at $11 per pair. Total receipts from this sale were $1600. How many pairs of slippers were sold at $6 each?

Total number of pairs of slippers = 200

In which x be the number of slippers cost $6, then 200 - x number of slippers cost $11.

6x + (200 - x) 11 = 1600

6x + 2200 - 11x = 1600

-5x + 2200 = 1600

-5x = 1600 - 2200

Number of slippers that cost $6 is 11.
