Schools are usually one of the boring spots for children but now the scenario is going to change. Schools are going to be one of the best places for children. The way of education is going to change and we will witness some beneficial changes that will be helpful in the development of India. I have brought here some sets of speeches and hope you will like it.

Speech 1 – new education policy.

Respected Principal Sir, Teachers, and my dear friends; very good morning to all of you, today on the occasion of National Education Day and I got an opportunity to say a few words about our new education system.

National Education Day is celebrated every year on the 11th of November in the memory of our first Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. He was the first person to design our education system and it was updated frequently. It was 1965 when our first Education policy was introduced. After this, in the year 1986, it was changed for another time. Then in the year 2020, we got our new education policy.

This policy is different and interesting in many ways. It will encourage children to go to school and there is also a plan of including 10 bag-less classes. The new education system is not about gaining bookish knowledge but it is all about acquiring knowledge.

It will focus on the skills and interests of the student. The new structure of education has been designed as 5+3+3+4 starting from preschool. Now preschool will also be a part of school education. Students are also free up to class 5 to learn any language of their choice. They will not be forced to learn English or Hindi which are compulsory these days.

Speech 2 – New Education Policy: The New India

Respected Principal Sir, my dear Teachers, dear brothers, and sisters; good morning everyone. I, Rashi of class 5, am going to say a few words on the new education policy. I know many of you are excited to know more about this policy.

Our new education policy was announced on 29th July 2020. It was a day of joy on many faces to witness such a versatile and creative education policy. The Education Ministry that was further known as the Ministry of Human Resource Development was working for 4 years to develop this policy. The committee was formed under former Cabinet Secretary T. S. R. Subramanian.

This education policy governs the interest of students and learning is going to be a part of the fun. There is no barrier for students what they want to read or learn. They will be provided with different opportunities and a school will help them to develop their skills. Up to class 4 students will be allowed to develop their interest and once they develop their interest, they will be given proper education from class 5.

There is no language barrier, and students are free to learn their mother tongue up to class 5, and afterward, they can learn any language as per their interest. In the new education policy, the 10+2 system has been changed into 5+3+3+4. Now the graduate programs will be of 4 years.

There is also a plan of ‘education vacation’ as students can drop their studies in between. Sometimes it becomes necessary for students to take a gap, either due to health issues, family problems, or due to carrier. So, there is also a scheme of providing a diploma or certificate as per years completed in college. This is really a very good step and I think will help many of us.

Overall, I would like to say that the new education system is helpful in many ways and is student-friendly. Now studies will not be a burden for any of us and it will also help us to focus on what we really like to do.

Speech 3 – New Education Policy: A Wave of Change

Good Morning everyone, learnet teachers and my dear students. As we know we have our new education policy and there is a lot to know about it. So, today in my speech I will give you some glimpses of our new education policy and I am sure you will find it helpful.

Change is a part of life and it is good in many ways, although we feel sad and attached to a specific place or thing, change is an eternal part of life and one should always keep on learning and changing.

After leaving our schools, we visit a college and this change is good because it helps us to learn new things. Similarly, the change is new but will definitely help students. It has been more than 30 years since we were following the same education pattern. As per time, there should also be a change in our education system because it is all about learning and acquiring knowledge. Knowledge is something that deals with information and helps us to become successful in our life.

Now the classroom will not be a boring place and the new education policy focuses on learning and developing interest. In the starting years of school, there will be no annual exams; students will be tested only by some assessments. The education structure has been changed from 10+2 to 5+3+3+4. Higher education will be based on interest rather than availability of course.

Apart from students, there is also a change in the recruitment process of teachers. Now the teacher’s recruitment will be based on 4 years B.Ed program and also different training facilities will be organized for teachers. 

Now students will not be forced to read Hindi and English on a compulsory basis. A student can learn either his mother tongue or any regional language up to class 5. This will also protect the existence of some rare languages in India. Now it is time to focus on self-development and growth. The main target of the government through this education policy is to develop India as a superpower.

Now all the colleges will conduct a joint entrance exam twice a year. Students can also leave their college education in the middle. If a student completes only one year of college and leaves the course due to any reason then he will be provided a certificate of the course. The new education policy advocates the study gap due to any reason.

Although we got this new education policy this year, the process started in the year 2015 itself. There was a committee developed under the Cabinet Secretary T. S. R. Subramanian. Many suggestions were received and finally, in 2019 a panel by Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan (former scientist of ISRO) submitted their reports and various discussions were held and this education policy was finally passed.

We are thankful to our government to take such a courageous step in the education sector. It will definitely work as a milestone. There was really a need for change in education. Nowadays there is scope everywhere but due to the lack of proper colleges students either visit foreign Universities or opt for another course.

Apart from world-class education facilities, the government is also planning to increase the GDP from 4% to 6% in the education sectors. They are also inviting foreign universities to invest in India. This will definitely bring a change in our education system. Now there is no need of paying an extra penny for hobby classes because they will be included within the schooling program.

All over I would like to say that this new scheme is boon in many ways and it aims to focus on creativity, multitasking, and overall development of a child’s interest. It is perfect for the new 21st century and gives a new vision of education in the future.

Essay on New Education Policy (NEP)

The new education policy is going to bring about a lot of change, and it's important for parents to be aware of how it will affect their children. First and foremost, the new policy puts more emphasis on technology and digital learning resources, so it's important for parents to ensure that their children have access to a reliable internet connection. Parents should also look into resources like online tutoring or additional support services that may be available to help their child stay on top of their studies.

It's also important for parents to be mindful of the potential stress and anxiety that students may experience while adjusting to the new system. The New Education Policy (NEP) was approved by the Union Cabinet of India with the aim to reform India's education system by reducing school curriculums and eliminating MPhil programs. 

The policy also aims to develop both theory and creative potential among children. It aims at the overall development of individuals with more emphasis on practical learning and skill development.

The government has adopted a new education policy, eliminating the 10 + 2 structure. The curriculum was reorganised into five parts: primary to second grade, third to fifth grade, sixth to eighth grade, and ninth to 12th grade.

The Indian government's original National Education Policy (NEP) was drafted in 1986, was last modified in 1992. The government realising the setbacks of the old policy aimed to create a new education policy to modernise the education system. In July 2020, the Union Cabinet approved the New Education Policy to make India a global knowledge superpower.

The Ministry of Education was renamed in response to the New Educational Policy. The policy is designed to align with the 2020 Agenda for Sustainable Development and is based on the Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability, and Accountability pillars.

It aims in overall development of students including, sports, creativity and science. Candidates will be able to choose subjects based on their interest rather than blindly following the stream structure.

The new education policy 2024 aims to bring holistic learning, practical oriented syllabus, job centric skill development, technology, quality education in the classroom environment. Candidates csn go through the objectives of the New Education Policy stated below.

The New National Education Policy in 2020 addressed the shortcomings of the Indian education system. It highlighted setbacks, like memorization over understanding concepts and multiple boards with different learning methods. 

A primary objective of the policy was to bridge the gap between formal and informal education, addressing the lack of focus on vocational skills and the prioritisation of traditional subjects. A comprehensive and effective education system was intended to address these issues.

Thus, a new education policy came into existence, which focused on creative development and interest-based learning curricula.

There are several changes in the new education policy that has been implemented in the Indian education system. Candidates can go through the changes stated below. 

1. Children can Start Schooling Early

 The new system will consist of 12 years of formal education and three years of Anganwadi/pre-school education. The 10+2 school curriculum framework will be replaced with a 5+3+3+4 curricular structure, emphasising Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE). Previously, children received three years of unofficial schooling called pre-schooling in the education system.

2. Mother Tongue is the Medium of Instruction

The New Educational Policy (NEP) emphasises native language learning as the primary teaching medium but doesn't promote compulsory language learning. The policy suggests using the mother tongue as an instruction medium rather than being mandatory. 

The home language, mother tongue, local language, or regional language will be used until Grade 5 or Grade 8 and beyond, after which the home or local language will be taught as a language. The mother tongue as the primary medium of instruction for students was not mandatory previously. 

3. No UGC, AICTE, NCTE Boards

The Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) is established as a single umbrella body for all higher education in India, excluding medical and legal education. Regulation, accreditation, and academic standards will all be controlled by the same rules for public and private higher education institutions.

The government will phase down college affiliation in 15 years and establish a stage-by-stage procedure for giving colleges graded autonomy.

4. No More Science, Arts, and Commerce Streams

The new education policy aims at no formal distinctions between arts and sciences, curricular and extracurricular activities, or vocational and academic programs. Candidates can select from a variety of disciplines throughout various streams. Students will get internships and vocational training in sixth grade. 

5. FYUP Programme Returns & No Dropouts Scheme

Under the New Educational Policy, undergraduate degrees will last three or four years, with several certificate exits or diplomas available. Colleges must award certificates, diplomas, or bachelor's degrees after one year of study in a topic or field, including vocational and professional fields.

Academic credits earned at different HEIs will also be stored digitally in an Academic Bank of Credit so they can be transferred and counted toward a degree.This policy implements necessary adjustments, eliminating a uniform system and promoting transparency.

It establishes a single national agency to oversee the entire education system, ensuring common access at all school-level education. New Education Policy aims to provide universal access to school education, ensuring holistic student development.

It tracks progress and learning capacity, allowing students to access formal and informal teaching methods. The policy also mandates vocational education courses from preschool to 12th standard, emphasising the inclusion of trained counsellors and social workers in the schooling system. This policy extends beyond knowledge and skills.

6. Attaining Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Early

The New Educational Policy (NEP) has directed states to implement FLN in primary school curriculums by 2025. The policy focuses on experiential learning, equipping students with 21st-century skills and reducing course content. Vocational education will be available in 6th-8th grade, along with internship opportunities. 

The New Educational Policy also targets to increase the graduate enrollment ratio, aiming for 50% by 2035 from 26.3%, respectively. It is in response to a recent decrease in students opting for higher education. 

The New Educational Policy also aims to reduce student dropout rates by offering multiple exit options in higher education. Overall, Foundational Literacy and Numeracy are vital prerequisites for holistic student development.

7. Standard Improvement of Open and Distance Learning

The government initiated distance learning programmes to par with regular courses. The government has taken measures like online courses, digital repositories, funding for better student services and research, and credit-based honour of MOOCs, among others.

8. Technical Innovation in Education

As a free exchange of ideas related to technology usage in enhancing the academic experience, the National Educational Technology Forum (NETF) will be started as an independent body by the government. Technology integration is anticipated to improve classroom procedures, enhance teachers' professional development, and facilitate better education planning for children.

9. Indian Education Internationalisation 

New Educational Policy aims to promote the internationalisation of Indian education. It seeks to encourage global collaborations between institutions and universities. It has introduced faculty exchange programs, and supports top world universities to open campuses in India.

10. Education as a Profitable Investment

The New Education Policy aims to bring together the central and State governments to collaborate to promote educational awareness among citizens. The collaboration seeks to boost the education sector by 6% of GDP to enhance the educational infrastructure in the country.

Challenges Regarding New Educational Policy

The New Educational Policy has brought revolutionary change in the Indian Education System in the time period. Yet, there are certain limitations in the New Educational Policy. Candidates can go through the challenges in the New Educational Policy stated below.

  • High Enrollment Targets: Building a new curriculum is challenging for most instructors because the New Educational Policy aims to double the gross enrollment ratio by 2035.
  • Lack of Qualified Teachers: India needs a sizable pool of qualified teachers familiar with the new pedagogical approach to effectively incline children with the upgraded curriculum.
  • Lack of Financial Sources: Adequate funding and resources are needed to implement the New Educational Policy properly. Not all institutions can gather proper financing for implementing the New Educational Policy.
  • Lack of Adaptive Mindset among Educators: As teachers generally share a disciplinary anchoring culture, it is challenging to have educators with exceptional skills. The New Educational Policy challenges institutions to hire multi-tasking and diverse-minded educators for holistic student development.

Previously, the exams were six months and yearly. But now they will be held as three milestones, at the end of the class 2nd, 5th and 8th. Candidates can go through the New Educational Policy exam structure stated below. 

1. Revamped Examination Structure

An updated educational framework, the 5+3+3+4 structure, presents a transformation and adaptation of the traditional learning system based on the needs of learners. It emphasizes foundational learning, middle schooling, secondary education, and high school stages. It aims to develop a holistic pedagogical atmosphere. 

It will ease the burden and periodicity of assessments that keep children under pressure. The New Education Policy 2024 aims to reduce students' curriculum burden and promote inter-disciplinary and multilingual learning through significant changes to board exams, focusing on objective-descriptive formats and biannual mode.

2. Importance of Mother Tongue

The New Education Policy 2023 emphasises the importance of education in one's mother tongue, with the medium of instruction up to class 5 and potentially extended to class 8 in some schools. 

This move reflects the linguistic foundation of education and aims to enhance students' comprehension, communication with teachers, and cultural connections. The policy aims to improve language proficiency and bridge cultural gaps despite the national debate on English as the primary medium of instruction.

3. Interdisciplinary Curriculum

New Educational Policy encourages interdisciplinary and multilingual education. It aims to foster a flexible curriculum that nurtures diverse skills and promotes the seamless achievement of knowledge. 

4. Coding and Experimental Education

In 6th grade, coding will become a crucial curriculum element. It will focus on practical and experiential understanding by integrating experiential learning methods. Thus, students will be more practical and exploratory rather than too inclined toward theoretical learning. 

5. Focus on Students' Health 

The New Educational Policy 2023 expands the mid-day meal scheme to include breakfast. It will incorporate counsellors and social workers to enhance students' health and mental well-being.

Accordingly, all State/UT governments will immediately prepare an implementation plan for attaining universal foundational literacy and numeracy in all primary schools, identifying stage-wise targets and goals to be achieved by 2025, and closely tracking and monitoring the progress of the same”. Subsequently, the NIPUN Bharat Mission (National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy) was launched on 5 July 2021 to achieve this goal.

The transition of the model, as per National Education Policy 2023, will be implemented by reclassifying the education stages as the following:

  • Foundational Stage: The fundamental stage of laying the foundation that is further stratified into two substages: 3 years of preschool or Anganwadi, followed by classes 1 and 2 in primary school. This essentially covers children between 3 and 8 years. The focus will be on activity-based learning.
  • Preparatory Stage: Covering students of class 3-5, and in the age bracket, 8–10 years. Students will be steadily exposed to the fundamental learning aspects of speaking, reading, writing, physical education, art, science, languages, and mathematics.
  • Middle Stage: This stage covers students of classes 6 to 8, in the age group of 11 and 13 years. It will introduce students to more abstract concepts in mathematics, sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities.
  • Secondary Stage: Classes 9 to 12, covering the ages of 14–18 years. It is subclassified into two parts: classes 9 and 10, covering the first phase, while classes 11 and 12, covering the second phase. These 4 years of study is intended to inculcate multidisciplinary learning, driven by depth and critical thinking. This provides for multiple options of subjects.

NEP 2023 Examination Structure

The examinations will not be conducted every year but will be held as three milestones, at the end of the classes, 2, 5 & 8.

Revamped examination structure: Students will now actively participate in exams in grades 2, 5, and 8. This reduces the burden and periodicity of assessments that constantly keep children under pressure, with exam-mode preparation overpowering holistic learning. Board exams for grades 10 and 12 will change significantly, where biannual mode will be embraced and objective-descriptive formats will take center stage.

UNESCO dedicated this year's International Day of Education on 24 January to girls and women in Afghanistan who have been deprived of their right to pursue secondary and higher education. The Organization renewed its call to immediately restore their fundamental right to education. “No country in the world should bar women and girls from receiving an education,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay. “The international community has the responsibility to ensure that the rights of Afghan girls and women are restored without delay. The war against women must stop.”

In Afghanistan’s Logar province, most girls and women are illiterate. Even before the decision of the de-facto authorities to suspend girls’ access to beyond primary education, most families did not let their girls go to school. Today, over 1,000 women and young girls aged 15 to 45 are learning how to read, write and calculate for the first time in their lives through UNESCO’s Community-based Basic General Literacy Classes. During UNESCO’s visit to two literacy classes , women and girls shared their motivations, challenges and inspirations for attending the classes. Nationwide, the Organization is currently reaching over 40,000 illiterate and semi-literate youth and adults – over 60% of whom are women – in 20 provinces. 

Supporting learners and teachers in Ukraine

UNESCO and Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science launched an online training in digital pedagogy for 50,000 teachers, while the education of many Ukrainian students is still disrupted by the war. They are also training 15,000 school psychologists to withstand the impact of the war on the mental health of Ukrainian learners and teachers. “Since February 2022, UNESCO has continuously supported Ukrainian teachers to ensure that students continue learning in the midst of war,” said UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education Stefania Giannini. “I pay tribute to their work, resilience and continued dedication. “We must better value, better train and better support,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay on World Teachers’ Day (5 October). UNESCO and the Teacher Task Force’s first global report shows that globally, 44 million teachers are still needed to achieve the goal of providing primary and secondary education for all by 2030. This includes a demand for seven out of ten teachers at the secondary level and a need to replace over half of the existing teachers leaving the profession. Exploring how rights should adapt as education evolves

The world has considerably changed since the key treaties on the right to education were conceived and adopted over half a century ago. Opportunity is public education’s fundamental value proposition. Because 90 percent of young people in America are educated in public schools, whatever happens in our schools has a profound impact on the democracy and society we become and has an outsized impact on the individuals and families who rely on public education for upward mobility. Forty years since “A Nation at Risk” catalyzed a focus on test-based accountability, educational progress has stalled, and support for education reform no longer holds the political center. In this watershed moment for America and its public schools, recommitting to the opportunity-enhancing mission of schools is essential for both meeting the evolving nature of students’ needs and rebuilding broad bipartisan support for public education.

No one should doubt the severity and scale of the crises confronting public education and the extent to which they are having an impact on student learning: historic declines in student achievement and enrollment; anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts at epidemic levels among youth; culture wars that feed off and further exacerbate lost trust and plummeting confidence in our public schools—all while we continue to recover from a pandemic. COVID laid bare the tremendous responsibilities we place on schools and our relative lack of information on access to essential opportunities. While it’s currently uncommon for states to systematically collect opportunity-to-learn data, there are models to emulate. For example, the National Assessment of Educational Progress asks test-takers to indicate whether they had access to opportunities that impact results, like a computer, a quiet place to study at home, and teachers they could ask for help when they struggled.

The vision for public education needs to be updated and reinvigorated to connect enduring values to contemporary challenges. Understanding that states hold the constitutional mandate that guarantees public education, in 2022, the Aspen Institute Education & Society Program invited a group of regionally, politically, racially, and ethnically diverse state policymakers to explore where their visions converge, with an explicit focus on building an agenda that could garner broad, bipartisan support.

These policymakers met for eight months to reflect on their leadership values and their visions for public education. They reviewed education research and met with experts in the fields of the future of work and the science of learning and development. The goal was not to create specific policy prescriptions since that work is state-specific but rather to identify common ground that could serve as a starting place for rebuilding a bipartisan agenda. After developing a set of principles, the group workshopped their draft with a wider group of education leaders last summer.

In September, the policymakers released a set of principles to undergird the next generation of education policy with a long view toward providing students with the tools they need to succeed.

Opportunity to Learn, Responsibility to Lead is a set of nine principles that outline a new road map for public education. They establish a baseline for what students need to succeed, the conditions schools are responsible for, and the essential role of state leadership in helping students realize fundamental—and crucial—learning opportunities.

These principles are a starting point, not an end. They center policy development and public discourse on the things that education leaders, parents, and policymakers on both sides of the political aisle agree students need and deserve. They serve to recenter conversations that have been dominated by ideologues on the right and left. And they are a tool to determine whether and how legislation can increase and expand students’ opportunities to learn.

The promise of public education is the promise of America, and opportunity is at the heart of both. While the principles focus primarily on the role of the state in accounting for opportunity, we encourage all stakeholders, really all Americans, to consider the adaptations that will make the opportunity-to-learn principles an engine of improvement and inclusion in your context. Most Americans agree on what we want to be true about our schools; these opportunity principles can help us transform these shared aspirations into reality.

The New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has been implemented after the approval of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi . The main objective of the new education policy is to bring education in India to the global level so that India can become a superpower. Under the NEP, changes have been made in the education policy from school to college. Under this, along with knowledge, their health and skill development are also included.

Key Features of Ne w Education Policy 2023

It has been decided in the New Education Policy that states can make changes in the NEP as per the need. The key features of the NEP are as follows:

  • After the NEP, the Ministry of Human Resource Management will now be known as the Ministry of Education .
  • Under the NEP, the 5+3+3+4 pattern will be followed, Where students will spend 5 years strengthening their foundation, 3 years in the preparatory phase, 3 years in the intermediate phase and the remaining 4 years in the secondary phase.
  • Under NEP, schools will impart education in the mother tongue or regional language till class 5th.
  • There will be 3 years of free school education.
  • The Business internship will start from class 6.
  • After the NEP comes, students can choose any subject and students can study Accounts or Arts subjects along with Physics.
  • This also includes teaching coding to students from class 6 onwards.
  • We will make all schools digital equity.
  • We will develop virtual labs.
  • It takes 3 or 4 years to graduate with the option to opt-out. If students have completed one year of graduation then they will get the certificate and after 2 years they will get the advanced diploma.

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of the New Education Policy. 

New Education Policy (NEP) is the one drawn up in the year 2020. It replaces the previously existing one from 1986 for better quality of education as deemed by the Government of India. The Chairman of the New Education Policy is Dr K. Kasturirangan, former chief of the Indian Space Research Organization and former chairman of the University Grants Commission.

Predominantly, the New National Educational Policy focuses on 5 main pillars. They are Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability.

Yet another important aspect is the introduction of the 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 design in the existing education system. According to the protocol released by the government, this design includes “Foundational Stage till Grade 2), Preparatory Stage (Grades 3-5), Middle Stage (Grades 6-8), and Secondary Stage (Grades 9-12 in two phases, i.e, 9th and 10th; 11th and 12th.)

New Education Policy: Transformations in Structure

The 10+2 module will be replaced by the 5+3+3+4 model. The execution will take place as follows:

  • Foundational Stage – This includes three years of preschool.
  • Stage Preparatory –  Classes 3-5, 8-11 years of age.
  • Middle Stage –  The middle stage will comprise classes 6-8 with ages 11-14.
  • Secondary Stage –  Class 9-12 will have ages 14-19. These four years will allow students to choose from a variety of disciplines. One discipline is not required.
  • Examinations for grades 3, 5, and 8 are only required thrice.
  • In order to assess students’ performance, “PARAKH” should be established as an assessment body.

Higher Education

  • With a flexible exit policy, the bachelor’s programme will be four years long. A year course will provide a certificate, a two-year diploma, a three-year bachelor’s degree, and a four-year course will integrate research findings and research work related to the subject matter.
  • This will replace AICTE and UGC with the Higher Education Grants Council (HEGC).
  • Common entrance exams for universities and colleges, as well as NEET and JEE, are the responsibility of the national testing agency.
  • Courses for Master of Philosophy to be discontinued, as they were intermediate courses between Masters and Doctoral programs.
  • To foster innovation and research, the National Research Foundation (NRA) will be created.
  • We encourage foreign universities to establish campuses here in our country as well as vice versa.

Teacher’s Education and Recruitment

  • It was essential for teaching due to the 4-year integrated B.Ed program.
  • Teachers should be trained on various teaching aids through workshops.
  • Students are highly dependent on teachers, who play a centralized role in their development. Transparency in teacher recruitment processes is necessary.

  • Children with inborn talents can develop their talents with this program, since it stresses their self-capability and cognitive skills.
  • The students had the option of selecting only one subject earlier, but now they can choose from a variety of subjects, for instance – they can study mathematics alongside art and craft.
  • The importance of treating all subjects equally.
  • With the inculcation of innovative ideas, the main purpose is to develop the power of interaction, critical thinking, and reasoning ability in the students.
  • Bachelor’s courses with multiple exits offer students the opportunity to gain experience and develop skills while working somewhere in the meantime and continuing their studies later.
  • According to the new education policy, practicing a subject is considered a better way to understand it as it is considered a more effective way of learning it.
  • By 2040, all institutions and higher education institutes will be multidisciplinary.

After a pandemic that drastically reduced the numbers of Japanese students going abroad and foreign students arriving, Japan is again on a drive to internationalize higher education. Low economic growth, a labor shortage due to the declining birthrate and lagging competitiveness in science and technology prompted the government to set new targets. Following this, many Japanese universities are likely to further promote exchanges with their counterparts in G7 and other nations. Efforts to globalize the nation’s education are expected to increase.

During a Council for the Creation of Future Education meeting in March, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced a plan to attract 400,000 foreign students to Japan and send 500,000 Japanese students abroad each year by 2033. In its latest round of proposals, the council presented a plan to reduce the hurdles to studying abroad and promote the benefits. Kishida has cited the necessity of raising a globally minded workforce of highly skilled professionals to establish his “new capitalism” concept.

The government will work to expand mid- and long-term study plans for Japanese students, improve the environment for encouraging acceptance of promising foreign students, promote international exchanges from junior high and high school levels, review residency requirements, facilitate employment, internationalize universities and create an attractive educational environment for foreign talent, Kishida said after a council meeting on April 27.

He also announced the government will implement major structural measures to increase overseas dispatches of excellent Japanese students on a large scale and bolster financial support for them. Japan is promoting mutual study abroad programs with its G7 counterparts through the G7 Summit in Hiroshima and the associated Education Ministers’ Meeting, Kishida said.

Eager to promote diversity and inclusion, universities are rolling out new programs and reinforcing past ones. Initiatives include language and culture classes to prepare students for studying abroad, dedicated Japanese language centers, and an increased emphasis on issues such as gender and the U.N.’s sustainable development goals.

A 2021 study analyzing internationalization initiatives at Japanese universities included criteria related to curriculum planning as well as administration. Universities are zeroing in on areas such as foreign faculty ratios and the extent to which information is disclosed in languages other than Japanese. Many universities have also created specific courses on global issues, built international dormitories and instituted measures to boost the employability of international graduates.

The government’s new numerical targets come after a 2008 goal of 300,000 foreign students by 2020 was surpassed in 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. By last year, that number had dropped to 230,000. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology reports that the number of Japanese students studying abroad peaked at around 80,000 in the early 2000s. By 2020, however, that number had plunged to just over 40,000.

Factors making this latest attempt at internationalization challenging include low desire among Japanese to study abroad. Additionally, foreign students face the hurdle of overcoming the language and cultural differences inherent to Japan.

Since 2014, the education ministry has funded 37 institutions in its Top Global University Project. According to the project’s website, these universities “are leading the internationalization of Japan’s education” by “developing interdisciplinary joint curricula by inviting laboratories of foreign universities; creating an environment that attracts high-caliber faculty and students; and promoting international activities.” Unfortunately, the project ends in 2024.

To maintain cooperation between top global and other universities, the Japan Forum for Internationalization of Universities was launched in 2021 in association with the education ministry. To attract foreign students, 18 universities offer virtual campus tours, joint degree programs with foreign universities and business Japanese courses.

For the five years up to 2023, the government also funded virtual interaction between students in Japan and overseas through its Collaborative Online International Learning initiative. Under COIL, students held discussions and worked on joint projects.

‘Good morning my friends and teacher (s). Today, I stand before you to present my ‘Speech on importance of education’. We all want to progress and grow in our lives. Education is the only weapon that can bring peaceful and sustainable development. Every personal, professional social, and environmental issue can be solved with an educated mind. 

Every society requires educated people for overall development. A society that has more education and civilized people will flourish and sustain better than those who lack education. That is why our government and educational institutions are promoting education.

In earlier times, education was given little importance, as most people were either engaged in agricultural or different manual labor jobs. With the advancement of science and technology, different sectors, like secondary, tertiary, quaternary, and quinary emerged. 

Education is the key that unlocks doors of opportunity, enabling individuals to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society. At a personal level, education allows us to understand the world around us. It empowers us to dream big, set goals, and work towards achieving them. 

Through education, we can understand our rights and duties towards our families, society and nation. We can explore innovative ideas, as were are constantly involved in learning and growing. 

Important people like big industrialists, politicians, movie actors, and even sportspersons are all educated, as they know the importance of education in life. Their contribution is essential for innovation, productivity, and economic competitiveness. 

Investing in education is like investing in a future workforce. It ensures that our society remains dynamic and resilient in the face of rapid technological and global changes.

When we talk about social justice and equality, education plays a major role. Education provides equal opportunities for people from different backgrounds. Making education accessible to everyone will help in building a fair and just society, one where talent and potential are recognized.’

LOOK: Jim Harbaugh returns to Michigan for ring ceremony, follows through on national title tattoo promise

Former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh returned to Ann Arbor on Saturday for the Wolverines' ring ceremony, and also made good on a promise to get a tattoo commemorating the 15-0 championship victory. The Wolverines team also received a bevy of rings for their historic season. 

Championship defensive back Mike Sainristil posted a video of Harbaugh in the tattoo chair getting the tattoo. He got a block M with "15-0" underneath on his upper right arm. 

"I have no ink on my body no tattoos anywhere, but I did say that to our players," Harbaugh said in January. "I said if we go 15-0, I'm getting a tattoo, it's 15-0. I'm going to put it on my shoulder -- I don't know if it's my left or right yet. I'm a right-handed quarterback, I'll probably get it on my right."

Harbaugh returned to Michigan for the spring game on Saturday and to take part in the Wolverines' ring ceremony, commemorating their "Team 144." That group became the first Michigan team since 1997 to win a national championship. Players and coaches received four rings as part of the ceremony -- one for the Big Ten title, Rose Bowl title, College Football Playoff and national championship.

Harbaugh repeatedly flirted with the NFL over the past three years, interviewing with multiple teams. After nine seasons, Harbaugh opted to join the Los Angeles Chargers, but only after capturing a national championship. 

Offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore was elevated to take over the program after serving as interim head coach for four games during the 2023 season. Harbaugh was suspended six games overall as part of two separate NCAA and Big Ten investigations regarding everything from improper recruiting contact during the pandemic to filming opposing sidelines at Michigan.
