Instructions

Select the branch that most closely matches your degree/report

Download the .zip archive, clone or fork this repository. If you fork the repository then you could use github to keep a copy of your thesis with backups and full revision control - albeit at the expense of being a little bit public in your writing!

If you use Overleaf then you can use New Project->Upload Project and upload the zip file. The paid for version of Overleaf also offers github integration.

Fill in the .tex files in the various sub-directories with your content. You may need to uncomment the \include lines in the main template TeX file for your additional chapters.

Add figure files for your thesis to the Capter_#_Fig folders. We recommend that you use pdflatex to compile the thesis and use eps2pdf to convert your figures to pdf on the fly.

University of Birmingham eTheses Repository

Forthcoming downtime.

We are expecting eTheses to be unavailable on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th March while ITServices carry out some essential maintenance on its hosting infrastructure. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Recent Changes

We have recently introduced some changes to Library thesis deposit, in summary:

  • You are no longer required to submit a hard bound copy of your thesis to the Library, an electronic version is still required
  • If your thesis should not be made immediately publicly accessible, you must upload a signed and approved restricted access form alongside your thesis deposit

To upload a research output to the repository, select the type of output from the dropdown menu and choose ‘Deposit’

It may take us up to 5 working days to confirm receipt of Theses deposits. If you require urgent acknowledgment that we have received your deposit, please Email Us once you have completed your deposit.

Research practice overview

Research at the University of Leeds is conducted according to the principles of academic excellence, community, integrity, inclusiveness and professionalism.

These principles encourage you to consider the wider consequences of your research, and engage with the practical, ethical and intellectual challenges inherent in high-quality research.

The University is a supporter of the UUK Concordat to Support Research Integrity This means we all have a commitment to:

  • uphold the highest standards of rigor and integrity in all aspects of research
  • ensure that research is conducted according to appropriate ethical, legal and professional frameworks, obligations and standards
  • support a research environment that is underpinned by a culture of integrity and based on good governance, best practice and support for the development of researchers
  • use transparent, robust and fair processes to deal with allegations of research misconduct should they arise
  • work together to strengthen the integrity of research

Research Ethics and Research Integrity

As you conduct your research, you are likely to need to directly engage with real-world issues, materials and participants. A key tool by which this engagement is managed and supported is research ethics awareness and training.

The purpose of ethics review is not to discourage controversial or high-risk research, but to provide constructive feedback on your project. Taking an ethical approach to your research should not be a barrier to your project.  It will help you to show that you recognise any potential risks involved and are aware of any necessary preparation and management that you are responsible for.

In all disciplines, the ethical aspects of your research should be discussed with your supervisor as part of your research design and management process. It is your responsibility to obtain ethics review approval before starting your research, should it be required.

To help support you in considering the ethics around your research project and complete the ethics review process, please enrol on the dedicated online training in research integrity and research ethics. You can find out more information about these tutorials on the Research practice training and tests page of the For Students website .

Ethical issues in research

Some key ethical issues in research include:

  • balancing potential risks and benefits to the participants (humans, animals or the environment) and the researcher(s)
  • dealing with sensitive topics, information or materials
  • looking after personal data
  • vulnerable participants
  • avoiding coercion and being mindful of power imbalances
  • conflicts of interest
  • Infringement of privacy- anonymity and confidentiality

For more information please read the Ethics review process page of the For Students website .

Deposit your research outputs in Symplectic

It is a requirement of the University Publications Policy that you deposit all newly accepted research outputs in Symplectic. Symplectic is the University's system used for recording and uploading research outputs and to record impact and professional activities.

Access to Symplectic is available directly over the internet using your University IT username (without @leeds.ac.uk) and password.

To ensure eligibility for future REF exercises , authors must continue to follow the REF 2021 Open Access policy requirements. All journal articles and conference papers must be deposited on acceptance together with the author accepted manuscript. This guidance will be updated as soon as we have the new REF information.

Other outputs should be uploaded to Symplectic, but it is not a REF requirement.

How to deposit newly accepted outputs in Symplectic

To deposit your work, you will require the following:

  • details of title, author(s), date of acceptance, journal name or conference name and start date
  • a copy of the author accepted version of the output.

The author accepted manuscript (AAM) should be formatted as a pdf (preferred) or a Word document. If you have not got a copy of the full text, you should still record basic details about the output and add a note explaining why the AAM is not available, using the comments box on the deposit screen in Symplectic.

The process of depositing is quick and easy. Watch this video to find out how:

There are also printable guides on depositing research outputs in Symplectic (DOCX) for preprints, journal articles and conference papers.

Support staff in some schools and faculties will deposit outputs to Symplectic for you. Check your school's open access procedure .

How to deposit published outputs in Symplectic

All outputs nominated for the REF must have a record in Symplectic

To deposit these outputs you should log into Symplectic , and check to see if any bibliographic details already exist. If they do, you can proceed to add the author accepted manuscript using the guides provided above. If they don’t, you will need to create a record for the output before you can deposit the full text.

Adding all your research outputs to Symplectic will mean they appear on your publications list on your staff page if a feed has been set up by your local IT department

After you deposit your output

The Library checks newly accepted journal articles and conference papers as a priority. You will only be contacted if there is a problem.

We also check and apply any publisher embargo periods and make the output open access on White Rose Research Online as soon as copyright and licensing permits.

Please leave enough time for Library staff to check your output by depositing it as soon as possible after acceptance.

Tell us if you know that your journal article or conference paper does not comply with the REF OA (open access) policy. Use the comments box on the deposit screen in Symplectic. The Research and Innovation Service will be in touch to see if any exceptions to the OA policy apply.
