Army Says Arlington National Cemetery Employee Being 'Unfairly Attacked' by Trump Campaign

Donald Trump at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at Arlington National Cemetery

The Army is defending an Arlington National Cemetery employee whom it says has been "unfairly attacked" in the wake of a confrontation with campaign staffers during former President Donald Trump's visit to the cemetery earlier this week.

In a relatively strong statement for a military service, the Army said Thursday that the employee "acted with professionalism" when she sought to remind the campaign about federal laws and policies banning political activities on cemetery grounds.

"An ANC employee who attempted to ensure adherence to these rules was abruptly pushed aside," the Army said in its statement, using an acronym for the military cemetery.

"This incident was unfortunate, and it is also unfortunate that the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked," the statement added. "ANC is a national shrine to the honored dead of the armed forces, and its dedicated staff will continue to ensure public ceremonies are conducted with the dignity and respect the nation's fallen deserve."

The statement comes after the Trump campaign baselessly accused the employee of "suffering from a mental health episode" and called her "despicable" in its own statements Wednesday.

Asked for comment on the latest Army statement, as well as any update on plans to release footage it claims to have disproving allegations of a physical fight, the Trump campaign did not directly answer. Instead, it sent Military.com a social media post from a conservative commentator about President Joe Biden's use of a cemetery photo in a 2020 campaign ad.

At issue is Trump's visit to Arlington National Cemetery on Monday to mark the third anniversary of the Abbey Gate bombing that killed 13 U.S. service members during the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. Trump participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and then visited some of the victims' graves in Section 60, the area of the cemetery reserved for recent war dead.

NPR first reported Tuesday night that Trump campaign staff verbally abused and pushed a cemetery official who tried to enforce the rules against political activities when Trump was in Section 60.

The Trump campaign denied that there was a "physical altercation as described" and said it was "prepared to release footage" it suggested would contradict the allegation, but has yet to release any footage of the incident.

Family members of two of the Abbey Gate victims have said they invited Trump to accompany them to the cemetery and welcomed him to take photos and video of the visit.

But ahead of the visit, Trump campaign staff was given a document detailing laws and regulations they needed to follow while there that "prohibit political campaign or election-related activities," according to a copy of the document obtained by Military.com.

"Photographers, content creators or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support, of a partisan political candidate's campaign are NOT permitted on the ANC installation," the document says.

Photos and video of the visit have since been used on Trump's TikTok account, his campaign co-chair's X account, and a campaign fundraising email from Utah's governor, among other political uses. The governor has since apologized for including a photo of the visit in the email.

In its statement Thursday, the Army noted that Arlington conducts "nearly 3,000" public wreath-laying ceremonies annually "without incident."

The Arlington employee reported Monday's incident with the Trump campaign to police at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall , the installation that oversees the cemetery, but has decided not to press charges, according to the Army's statement.

"Therefore," the statement said, "the Army considers this matter closed."

These Republicans denounced Trump and endorsed Harris at the DNC. Here's what they said.

By Kathryn Watson

Updated on: August 23, 2024 / 12:18 AM EDT / CBS News

Several prominent Republicans — some of whom worked for former President Donald Trump — took to the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris.

Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan; Olivia Troye, who was homeland security adviser to Vice President Mike Pence; former Trump White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham and former Rep.  Adam Kinzinger have all thrown their support behind the Democratic nominee and suggested Trump lacks the moral character to lead the nation again.

They all had one message to their fellow Republicans and independents: Do the right thing and vote for Harris in November.

"To my fellow Republicans at home that want to pivot back toward policy, empathy and tone, you know the right thing to do, now let's have the courage to do it in November," said Duncan, summarizing the other Republican speakers' speeches as well as his own.

Duncan knows what courage requires. Defending the election results in Georgia after the 2020 presidential election, when Trump narrowly lost in the state, Duncan faced such serious threats from Trump supporters that law enforcement had to protect his home.

"In our family, my wife, Brooke, and I are raising three boys and we have a family motto," Duncan said Wednesday night at the DNC. "And it says, 'Doing the right thing will never be the wrong thing.' During 2020, during just the lowest of lows when we had armed officers outside our house protecting us from other Republicans, Donald Trump had targeted us. My son came downstairs and he handed me this coaster that I had given him years before at a father-son retreat for our church. And he said, 'Hey dad, doing the right thing will never be the wrong thing. Stay strong.'"

Election 2024 DNC

Troye, the former Pence adviser, said she "grew up in the kind of working family that Trump pretends to care about."

"Conservative. Catholic. Texan," she said. "July 4th was our most sacred holiday. Those values made me a Republican. And they're the same values that make me proud to support Kamala Harris."

Troye described working inside Trump's White House as "terrifying."

"But what keeps me up at night is what'll happen if he gets back there," she said. "The guardrails are gone, the few adults in the room the first time resigned or were fired."

Grisham, who was criticized for never holding a press briefing during her tenure, resigned on Jan. 6, 2021, as rioters assaulted the Capitol and Trump said nothing to stop them.

"I wasn't just a Trump supporter, I was a true believer," Grisham told the DNC crowd. "I was one of his closest advisers. The Trump family became my family. I spent Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's all at Mar-a-Lago. I saw him when the cameras were off. Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters. He calls them basement dwellers."

Grisham recalled a hospital visit when Americans were dying at the ICU and she said he was upset the cameras weren't on him.

"He has no empathy, no morals, and no fidelity to the truth," she said. "He used to tell me, 'It doesn't matter what you say, Stephanie — say it enough and people will believe you.' But it does matter. What you say matters. And what you don't say matters. On January 6th, I asked Melania if we could at least tweet that while peaceful protest is the right of every American, there's no place for lawlessness or violence. She replied with one word: 'No.'"

Grisham said she "couldn't be part of the insanity any longer."

"When I was press secretary, I got skewered for never holding a White House briefing," she said. "It's because, unlike my boss, I never wanted to stand at that podium and lie. Now here I am, behind a podium, advocating for a Democrat. And that's because I love my country more than I love my party. Kamala Harris tells the truth. She respects the American people. And she has my vote."

Former Republican Anna Navarro, a Nicaraguan-born political commentator and co-host of "The View," also spoke out against Trump on stage at the DNC. She stopped supporting Republicans in 2016, partly over the "Access Hollywood" tape. Navarro blasted Trump for calling Harris a "communist."

"Let's be serious," Navarro said. "Donald Trump and his minions call Kamala a communist. I know communism. I fled communism from Nicaragua when I was 8 years old. I don't take it lightly."

Kinzinger, a Republican former congressman from Illinois who left office in 2023 and has long been critical of Trump, spoke on the  final night of the DNC  and said the Republican Party has lost its way.

"Donald Trump has suffocated the soul of the Republican Party," Kinzinger said. "His fundamental weakness has coursed through my party like an illness."

He said the Republican Party has "switched its allegiance" to "a man whose only purpose is himself."

"Donald Trump is a weak man pretending to be strong. A small man pretending to be big. A faithless man pretending to be righteous. A perpetrator who can't stop playing the victim. He puts on quite a show. But there's no real strength there."

Kinzinger said he never thought he'd be speaking at a Democratic convention.

"But I've learned something about the Democratic Party. And I want to let my fellow Republicans in on the secret. The Democrats are as patriotic as us," he said to loud applause. "They love this country just as much as we do. And they are as eager to defend American values at home and abroad as we conservatives have ever been. I was relieved to discover that."

TRUMP CAMP ARLINGTON POLITICS

The U.S. Army said an employee at Arlington National Cemetery who tried to "ensure adherence" to rules that prohibit political activities at the cemetery "was abruptly pushed aside," but that the employee decided not to press charges against the Trump campaign staffers who allegedly pushed her.

The statement Thursday comes in response to NPR's reporting on former President Donald Trump's visit to Arlington and an altercation his staff had with a cemetery employee.

"Participants in the August 26th ceremony and the subsequent Section 60 visit were made aware of federal laws, Army regulations and DoD policies, which clearly prohibit political activities on cemetery grounds," the statement said. "An ANC employee who attempted to ensure adherence to these rules was abruptly pushed aside. Consistent with the decorum expected at ANC, this employee acted with professionalism and avoided further disruption. The incident was reported to the JBM-HH police department, but the employee subsequently decided not to press charges. Therefore, the Army considers this matter closed."

The Army, in its statement, called the incident "unfortunate," adding: "it is also unfortunate that the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked."

Because federal law prohibits Army employees from being involved with any political campaign, the staff at the cemetery did not deal directly with the Trump campaign about his visit there. A source familiar with the event said the cemetery staff worked with the staff of Republican Congressman Brian Mast of Florida, who joined Trump at Arlington.

Arlington Cemetery staff dealt directly with Mast’s chief of staff, James Langenderfer, briefing him extensively on the rules, which include no campaign events at the cemetery. They also reiterated that only an official Arlington National Cemetery photographer — and no campaign photographer — could be used at Section 60, the location of the recent American war dead. The source said Langenderfer told them the Trump campaign agreed to these rules.

Fallout continues after Trump campaign incident at Arlington National Cemetary

NPR reached out to Mast’s staff and asked if Langenderfer was briefed and relayed that information to the Trump campaign. They did not address the questions but instead released a statement.

In the statement to NPR, Mast said: "President Trump conducted no politics at Arlington National Cemetery."

The statement comes a day after Trump shared a TikTok video including footage from Arlington National Cemetery that likely violates a federal law against using military cemeteries for campaigning purposes.

NPR reported that Trump campaign staffers had a physical altercation with an Arlington National Cemetery staffer on Monday over the restriction.

It's not the first time Trump has been accused of politicizing the military, but the campaign is seeking to downplay what happened in the aftermath.

This photo shows former President Donald Trump at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday. He's wearing a blue suit and red tie and is standing outdoors on stairs while surrounded by various officials and staffers in suits.

Trump campaign staff had altercation with official at Arlington National Cemetery

Trump was at Arlington on Monday to commemorate the third anniversary of an attack in Afghanistan that killed 13 U.S. service members amid the disastrous withdrawal of troops. Trump and other Republicans have blamed President Biden and Vice President Harris for the chaos and loss of life.

The 21-second video posted on Trump's TikTok account shows the former president laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and several snippets of Trump joining Gold Star family members at gravesites of their loved ones in a part of the cemetery known as Section 60 .

"We lost 13 great, great people — what a horrible day it was," Trump says over somber music. “We didn't lose one person in 18 months, and then they took over the disaster, the leaving of Afghanistan.”

Trump has been making this claim about 18 months without military casualties during his administration for years, and it’s not true. The 18-month period from February 2020 to August 2021 saw no combat-related deaths in Afghanistan, with part of that when Biden was in office.

The Trump campaign was not authorized to film or photograph in Section 60, federal law prohibits the use of military cemeteries for campaign events, and two campaign staffers got in a physical and verbal altercation with the Arlington staffer who tried to prevent the filming.

In a statement after NPR's original story, family members present Monday said they invited Trump and gave approval for his photographer and videographer to document an emotional moment of remembrance.

A man places flowers in front of headstones in Section 60, which mark the final resting place of service men and women at Arlington National Cemetery on May 27 in Arlington, Va. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began after the Civil War to commemorate soldiers who died in that conflict and now honors all Americans who have sacrificed their lives in all wars.

Arlington National Cemetery’s Section 60 is a focus of controversy. What is the area?

Some of those family members also spoke at the Republican National Convention, bashing Biden and vocally endorsing Trump.

"Joe Biden may have forgotten that our children died, but we have not forgotten — Donald Trump has not forgotten," said Cheryl Juels in Milwaukee at the RNC in July. Juels is the aunt of Sgt. Nicole Gee, one of the 13 U.S. service members killed at Abbey Gate in Afghanistan in 2021.

"Joe Biden owes the men and women that served in Afghanistan a debt of gratitude and an apology. Donald Trump loves this country and will never forget the sacrifice and bravery of our service members," she added. "Join us in putting him back in the White House."

Though the loved ones said they were OK with the cameras present, the families do not have the power to suspend the rules.

The family of Master Sgt. Andrew Marckesano, a Green Beret who died by suicide after serving multiple combat tours and who is buried in Section 60, said according to their conversations with the cemetery, "the Trump campaign staffers did not adhere to the rules that were set in place for this visit."

"We hope that those visiting this sacred site understand that there were real people who sacrificed for our freedom and that they are honored and respected and treated accordingly," they said in a statement.

The Trump campaign responds

In the aftermath of the visit to Arlington, the Trump campaign's response has taken on a tone of nastiness. One spokesman said the cemetery staffer was "clearly suffering from a mental health episode" and promised to release footage of the encounter but has so far declined to do so.

On the campaign trail in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, the Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, said Harris could "go to hell" over the Afghanistan withdrawal and blamed reporters for the campaign's controversy, which he called a "disagreement."

"You guys in the media, you're acting like Donald Trump filmed a TV commercial at a grave site," Vance said. "He was there providing emotional support to a lot of brave Americans who lost loved ones they never should have lost. And there happened to be a camera there, and somebody gave him permission to have that camera there.”

Trump echoed that argument Thursday, doubling down on attacks against Harris and Biden in a clip posted to his campaign's Trump Social account from a campaign event in Michigan.

"She does not respect you, ask the families of the 13 incredible servicemember heroes who died during the surrender of Afghanistan — which was surrendered by Kamala and 'Sleepy Joe' — whether or not Kamala Harris cares about our young people and our military," Trump said.

Meanwhile, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, who attended the Arlington events with Trump, apologized in a social media post for sending a campaign fundraising email with a photo of him and the former president in Section 60 with the family of Staff Sgt. Darin Taylor Hoover.

Cox's official gubernatorial X account posted a photo from the restricted area, and the post is still online.

This is not the first time Trump has been accused of politicizing the military for his personal gain. He has allegedly called dead soldiers " suckers" and "losers ," insulted the late Sen. John McCain for being a prisoner of war and recently stoked controversy for saying civilian Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients are much better than those who received the Medal of Honor — the highest military award in the country, often given posthumously.

Explaining Claims About Tim Walz’s Military Service

Four veterans who investigate claims of fraudulent military service said they do not believe the governor is guilty of “stolen valor,” but that he did misrepresent his record at times.

Gov. Tim Walz speaking at a lectern at a rally wearing a dark suit and a red tie.

By Linda Qiu

Reporting from Washington

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota has faced fresh scrutiny over his military service, and how he has characterized his record, in the weeks since he was selected as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.

The attacks, spearheaded by his rival for the vice presidency who himself is a veteran, JD Vance, have dogged him since he first ran for Congress nearly two decades ago. Mr. Walz has forcefully defended his time in the Army National Guard.

“I am damn proud of my service to this country,” Mr. Walz said this month . “And I firmly believe you should never denigrate another person’s service record.”

Some details of Mr. Walz’s service are still unknown, and other facts may remain unverifiable. Here’s what we know.

What Was Said

“What bothers me about Tim Walz is the stolen valor garbage. Do not pretend to be something that you’re not.” — Mr. Vance at a rally in Michigan in August

“How dare @GovTimWalz claim he went to war when he did not. While I am not a combat veteran, I did not dodge service. He’s a coward. This is grossly misleading and, by definition, illegal. Walz never deployed and is falsely claiming he did. This is stolen valor.” — Representative Anna Paulina Luna, Republican of Florida, on social media in August

Expert view

  • Dominic Waghorn: If it weren't for Netanyahu, hostages would be coming home
  • UK arms move is undoubtedly a blow to Israeli prestige
  • Alistair Bunkall: Why hostage deaths mark pivotal moment

Benjamin Netanyahu is taking questions from journalists gathered at the news conference.

He is asked about Joe Biden's comments that he is not "doing enough" to secure a ceasefire and hostage deal.

He says he doesn't believe that the US president really made those comments.

Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel "must stand united as one" as it faces a "brutal and vicious enemy" that wants to "eradicate and kill all of us".

In a news conference from Tel Aviv, as a huge protest takes place in the city, the Israeli prime minister said he has spoken on the phone with families of the six hostages whose bodies were recovered from Gaza at the weekend.

Here's a summary of his speech:

  • Netanyahu asked for "forgiveness" that the six hostages were not brought home alive, saying: "We were close, but we didn't achieve it";
  • He said the Hamas militant group would "pay a very heavy price" for the "massacre" of Israeli people;
  • The Israeli leader said Israel's goals were to eradicate Hamas, bring back the remaining hostages, make sure Gaza "no longer poses a threat over Israel" and to let people living in northern Israel return to their homes;
  • Mr Netanyahu said Israel "must have control" over the Philadelphi corridor, a narrow strip of land which runs along the southern Gaza border with Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Demonstrating the situation with charts, and explaining some of the history behind the strategic corridor, the prime minister said it will "determine our entire future and has tremendous importance for us", and described it as "Hamas's lifeline";
  • "The axis of evil needs the Philadelphi corridor," the prime minister said, referring to Hamas - as he suggested that without Israeli control over the land, the militant group could continue attacking his country;
  • He said that Israel has made its position on the corridor "clear" during ceasefire negotiations - but claimed that Hamas would "not budge" on the issue;
  • Mr Netanyahu said he was "flexible" but there were "certain things we won't compromise on". He accused Hamas of using "tactics" to make Israel "succumb" to its demands;
  • "They want to split us apart, they want to break us down. They are relying on an internal rift. They think that the majority of Israelis will follow this and they're wrong," he said.

We're expecting to hear from Benjamin Netanyahu in a news conference shortly as protests across Israel pile pressure on him to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza.

Earlier, our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall said the Israeli leader could take questions from the media during the conference - something he has rarely done during the conflict.

While he gets ready to speak, thousands of protesters are out on the streets of Tel Aviv in anger against his failure to secure a hostage deal.

We'll bring you the key lines as they come.

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets in anger after the bodies of six more hostages were discovered in Gaza on Saturday.

Some blocked a main road in Tel Aviv earlier today to protest the failure to return the remaining captives being held by Hamas.

The protest is part of a rare general strike called by Israel's largest trade union, the Histadrut - which the country's labour court ordered an early end to at 12.30pm UK time.

The UK's decision to suspend some arms exports to Israel sends a problematic message to Hamas and its Iranian backers, Israel's foreign minister has said.

Israel Katz said in a statement that Israel was "disappointed by a series of decisions" by the UK government, including its move to halt some exports which it believes are intended for use in the Gaza war.

"A step of the type taken by Britain now sends a very problematic message to the terrorist organisation Hamas and its agents in Iran," Mr Katz said.

Earlier, foreign secretary David Lammy said the government was suspending around 30 arms export licences to Israel amid concerns a "clear risk" exists that they could be used to breach international humanitarian law (see 16.28 post).

Anger has returned to the streets of Israel as a "few thousand" people rally outside the Israeli defence ministry demanding a ceasefire, says our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall , in Tel Aviv.

"Organisers think that there's around a half million between here and in Jerusalem out on the streets," he says.

"I don't know whether we'll get similar numbers tonight [as last night] - but that speaks to how hour-by-hour this is."

Protesters feel like they have momentum for the first time "in many months", Bunkall says.

"They've been out in the streets every week in very large numbers but they think they've been ignored by the government.

"Well now they think that momentum is on their side, both domestically, but also internationally, buoyed by what President Biden had to say in Washington earlier."

Bunkall says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to take questions from the media when he addresses the nation in less than an hour - something he has done very rarely during the war.

"I've spoken with senior aides of his to try and get a sense of what he might say, and they said he will repeat the facts and he will put forward the message he always has done.

"That doesn't sound to me like the Israeli prime minister has any mood, to change course or that the pressure is starting to build to such an extent, that he will make different decisions," Bunkall adds.

Joe Biden has "expressed his devastation and outrage" at the murder of Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin and five other hostages in Gaza, the White House has said.

The US president and vice president Kamala Harris met in the White House situation room with Washington's hostage deal negotiation team after the six hostages' bodies were found by the Israeli military in Gaza.

"President Biden expressed his devastation and outrage at the murder, and reaffirmed the importance of holding Hamas’s leaders accountable," a readout of the meeting said.

It said that during the meeting, Mr Biden and Ms Harris "received an update from the US negotiation team on the status of the bridging proposal outlined by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt".

"They discussed next steps in the ongoing effort to secure the release of hostages, including continuing consultations with co-mediators Qatar and Egypt."

A partial ban on arms exports from the UK to Israel is "powerful symbolism" and sends a "clear message", says our international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn .

The statement by UK foreign secretary David Lammy in the last few moments is a "big deal" despite being "caveated with various other reassurances", he says.

"It is powerful symbolism and it sends a clear message to Israel and it is undoubtedly a blow to Israeli prestige and to Israeli diplomacy," Waghorn adds.

He says it's clear there is "a lot of concern in the government" about the way things are going in Israel.

"The feeling is that Israel is not doing enough to to reassure other people, the countries it's buying its weapons from, that they are meeting the requirements for licensing those sales," says Waghorn.

He notes that it comes at a time where there is a "great unease" and "growing disquiet on both sides of the Atlantic".

Foreign secretary David Lammy has announced the UK will halt some arms sales to Israel.

Making a statement to the House of Commons, Mr Lammy said around 30 of roughly 350 exports to Israel would be suspended.

The exports include equipment intended for use in the war in Gaza, such as components for military jets, helicopters and drones and items which "facilitate ground targeting", he said.

Mr Lammy said following independent legal advice, there exists a "clear risk" some UK exports to Israel could be used to commit a "serious violation of international humanitarian law" in Gaza.

He said Israel's actions in Gaza "continue to lead to immense loss of civilian life, widespread destruction to civilian infrastructure and immense suffering".

The Hamas-run health ministry says at least 40,786 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza since 7 October - figures disputed by Israel.

Mr Lammy said the government had assessed that Israel "could reasonably do more to ensure life-saving food and medical supplies reach civilians in Gaza in light of the appalling humanitarian situation".

He said the suspension of some exports was not "a blanket ban" or an "arms embargo".

"A number" of exports which the government has assessed will not be used in the Israel-Hamas war will continue, added Mr Lammy.

He also said there was "no doubt" that UK "continues to support Israel's right to self-defence", and that the arms sales suspension was "not a determination of innocence or guilt".

A senior Hamas official says Joe Biden's comments about Benjamin Netanyahu point to acknowledgement by the US that the Israeli prime minister was undermining efforts to secure a ceasefire.

Sami Abu Zuhri said any proposal for a permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal would be received positively.

But senior Israeli sources have told the Reuters news agency that it is "remarkable" Mr Biden is putting pressure on Mr Netanyahu - who they say has agreed to US proposals - and not Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

They said the US president's statement that the Israeli leader is not doing enough to secure the release of hostages is dangerous as it came days after six hostages, including an Israeli-American, were killed in Gaza.

How To Respond To A Resume Received Email

No Acknowledgement Can Spark Dysfunctional Candidate Behavior

Or some candidates send them again, depending on their interest in your posted job, because they don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to receive your consideration. These activities double your workload when you have to review repeat resumes and cover letters.

Other candidates might start sending their resumes on colorful paper to catch the employer’s eye better. From one employer’s memory of a job applicant’s desperate measures to get noticed, having to clean up confetti from her desk and the HR office floor did not endear that candidate to her in any way.

Thank You For Applying Email

An employee “thank you for applying” email lets job applicants know that their application has been received, and may also set up their expectations for what’s next and when they should expect responses. They can also be used to passively screen applicants.

  • Completely free trial, no card required.
  • Reach over 250 million candidates.

What Is A Response Email

The name has already told us all. A response email is simply an email to reply to another email. In business, this is the type of email you will have to write every day. This could be a meeting confirmation email, approving an application email, inquiry response email , declining an invitation or contract email, acknowledgment email, etc. Therefore, our receivers could be anyone you meet while working: your partner, your customer, your boss, your colleague.

Since maintaining high standards in business emails is a sign of professionalism, email response must be written well in every case. Poorly structured and unprofessional responses can even potentially result in business failure. So how to write an email response?

How Do You Respond To A Resume Received Email

The 5 Biggest Mistakes People Make On Their Resumes

You respond to a resume received email by sending a brief acknowledgement email to the hiring manager, in which you thank them for reaching out to you, state your willingness to answer any questions they may have, and repeat your contact details so that the hiring manager can quickly find them.

Heres an example of how to respond to a resume received email:

Dear , Best wishes,

Note that resume received emails are sometimes sent automatically by applicant tracking systems . You can usually tell if this is the case if the email address is something like [email protected] or if the email says its autogenerated. In such cases, theres no need to respond to a resume received email.

Positive Communication With Job Candidates

Do you need a sample application acknowledgment letter? Here is a sample application response letter for the applicants who apply for your open positions. Use this sample letter to develop your own letters to tell anxious applicants that you have received their application and resume. When you fail to acknowledge your job candidates’ applications, you fail your first step as a potential employer.

Starting with this letter that lets your applicants know that you have received their resume and cover letter, you open the door to effective communication with the prospective employees who apply for your jobs.

This response letter is sent at one of the four critical points at which your candidates need communication from you . Rather than letting your candidates think that their application disappeared into a dark hole, or forcing them to try to communicate with you repeatedly, you can reassure them that their application is under consideration.

This is important because customizing a resume and a cover letter to apply for your job posting takes a candidate 30 minutes to an hour. Even online forms take a lot of candidate time. The candidate then waits and waits to learn if he or she was among the most qualified applicants and whether they will be invited to participate in a job interview.

Thank You For Your Email Auto

How To Acknowledge Email For Interview

Acknowledging a job interview is important for several reasons. When a hiring manager invites you for an interview, receiving an acknowledgement email confirms your availability and interest in the position. If they don’t receive a confirmation email usually within 24 hours, they may assume you’re no longer interested in the position.

An acknowledgement email is a great way to ask questions that you’re uncertain about concerning the interview. This includes but isn’t limited to the location of the interview , the date and time or to ask the hiring manager if they need any more documents or detail from you.

Scheduling A Phone Interview

It makes sense if you want to avoid offending someone when he or she is just trying to schedule a phone interview . But, based on my experience in recruiting, I know two things: Recruiters are busy and when they want to schedule a phone interview, it will take the most offensive email ever to ruin your candidacy at this stage.

Use Your Personal Email

Be sure to respond through your personal email and not use the companies online system for any communication with recruiters. This is because you dont know who is monitoring your email activity or internet history in your IT department.

Also, you may not know the type of activity reports your boss routinely receives about you.

If you are out of work, most people find that recruiters play a small part in their job search. Although, in some industries like IT, recruiters may play a significant role.

However, I always remind members of Professionals In Transition that recruiters work for their client companies, not for them.

How To Respond To Recruiter Emails After Application Submission

In this scenario, youve applied for a specific job and now youve been contacted about your application to begin the next steps. It might seem scary, but its great news. Every time you have a chance to speak more with a recruiter, you have the chance to solidify their impression of you as a great job candidate.

However, try to keep the conversation to scheduled times set by the recruiter. If the recruiter is asking you if you have time to hop on a call to discuss your resume , use the email response to lock-down time to talk to do so versus talking about how great your resume is in the email.

If the recruiter is asking for more details about you, you can answer via email, but offer up options to continue the conversation in a call if theyd be interested.

Generally, the first times you communicate with a recruiter dont need to be novels. They are usually logistical correspondences so that you can get to the great conversations face to face or over a phone interview .

Letters To Job Candidates

Letters to job candidates are letters sent to applicants who are being considered for certain job positions. These could be acceptance letters to let the candidates know that they have been accepted, rejection letters to unsuccessful candidates, or job offer letters to officially offer job positions to the candidates. In all situations, a letter to a job candidate should be professional, thoughtful, and kind. Although you may think that it’s unnecessary to write to a candidate after an unsuccessful interview, there is nothing more unkind than leaving a candidate waiting and wondering. Letters to job candidates are essential in that they eliminate doubts and confusion after an interview. The best letters to job candidates are professionally and formally written. Use proper address and salutation for the candidate. Start by congratulating the candidate for his/her time. Proceed directly to conveying the intended message. If the candidate has been accepted and offered the job, state so clearly and provide more information about the position. However, if the candidate has been rejected, communicate this assertively and invite him/her to apply in the future. Make the letter short, clear, and to the point and avoid providing unnecessary details. End on a positive note.

If Youre Not Searching For A New Job Right Now

Follow Up Letter Template

You may receive an email from a recruiter at a time when youre not interested in a new job. In this case, youll want to politely respond to the recruiter that youre not in the market for a new job right now. End the email by thanking them for their interest in you.

Thank you for reaching out about this opportunity. Im grateful to be considered.

Currently, I enjoy the work Im doing for , and Im not in the market for a new job. However, if I find myself pursuing a new job in the future, Ill be in touch.

Thanks again,

Keep It Short And Natural

Its important then that your message in reply is short, clear, conveys appreciation for the opportunity, and includes your full contact information. If this is your dream-come-true opportunity, add a line that will help you connect with a recruiter. But again, make it natural. Dont exaggerate with excitement or try to impress the recruiter at all costs.

Try something along the lines:

Hi , Thank you for reaching out! This looks like a great opportunity, and I would certainly like to meet with you to discuss the details and learn more about the job. has been on my radar for a while and Im impressed with , it would be great to be a part of that and see how my skills and experience could benefit your . You can reach me directly at . Looking forward to connecting and again, thank you for the opportunity. Best,

Writer | Editor | Marketing Manager | Career Expert, Zipjob

Here is a sample email I recommend when responding to a recruiter:

Hi , Thanks for reaching out! Im interested in learning more about the opportunity you mentioned. As a with , I am currently interested in applying my skill and experience to a new business challenge. What information do you need from me?

Sign off with your full name, number, email, and possibly a link to your LinkedIn profile if it seems relevant.

Dont attach your resume unless they ask for it ideally, only submit a resume after you have reviewed a specific job description so you can include the keywords and metrics most likely to impress.

Remember To Respond Within 24 Hours

In business, everything should be fast. Responding to an email within a day is good etiquette. Certainly, we should respond as soon as possible so your receiver will be assured that you respect them and their concerns are being heard. In some cases, if the email you receive is emergency or powerfully expressed, a phone call may be more appropriate than taking the time to write an email.

Examples To Thank You For Your Response To My Job Application Resume Inquiry Etc

This section will help you write a thank you message after you have submitted your application and before an interview. If you need examples of thank you notes after your interview, please read this after the job interview post.

Tip #1: If you receive an email response immediately after submitting sending your email, its very likely an auto-response. I suggest waiting until you get a reply that wasnt automatically generated before you reply.

Tip #2: If you are contacted by email to set up an interview, thank the person for choosing you and confirm that the date and time of the meeting works for you. If they give you multiple options, be sure to include the date and time that works best for you.

Tip #3: When you receive a rejection email, you can still respond with a short thank you note.

Regardless of the situation , your note can be short as the main goal is to say thank you and confirm any details. The examples below are split into sections for when you are offered an interview, declined for an interview, or when the response is that the position has been filled.

Dont Wait Too Long To Respond

Many times recruiters are sending out 100s of emails at a time, and their calendars will book up quickly. Keep your response brief and simple.

Heres a great response I received recently to someone that I had reached out to after reviewing his online portfolio that included his email address. In my email, I also added a scheduling link:

Hi , Thank you for reaching out. I dont believe that weve been in touch before, so its great to connect. Ive set-up an appointment to chat with you during the second half of next week. Also, Ive attached a copy of my latest resume so that you can learn more about me. I look forward to speaking with you. Thanks,

Sometimes these types of emails can be spam, but a quick Google search or LinkedIn search will give you a lot of answers about the legitimacy of the company thats contacting you. Further things to consider when writing job offer to job candidates

Further things to consider when writing job offer to job candidates

Job offer letters are formal letters sent from a hiring company to selected job candidates to confirm that the candidates have been offered the positions officially. A job offer letter usually comes after a candidate has successfully completed an interview. The letter confirms the employment's offer details such as the job's description, salary, allowances, work schedule, paid time off, the date the employment starts, etc. If a candidate chooses to accept the job offer, he/she signs and returns the letter as an official and formal confirmation of acceptance of the position. Job offer letters kick off the employment relationship on a positive note. Say as much as possible about the offered position and its responsibilities. Clearly state the salary, mode of payment, and the frequency of payment. Briefly describe the benefits and allowances offered by the company such as housing, health, transport, etc. Be specific about dates and time. For instance, mention the employment start date and time, when you want the signed offer letter returned, the length of the probationary period, etc. Name other relevant documents the candidate is supposed to provide or sign before he/she starts working. Conclude on a note of anticipation of a positive response.

Letter in Response to the Request made for Resume

Letter in Response to the Request made for Resume

A letter of response to a request of a resume is written by a potential employee to his probable future employer. When a job opportunity arises, an employer searches for the candidates and request their resumes to analyze if they are a fit for the position. When such a request is received, the candidate responds, usually, in the form of a letter or an email and attaches his resume with it.

This letter is important because:

  • It shows gratitude regarding the request and consideration.
  • It shows the courtesy of the candidate through a proper letter or a formal communication.
  • It provides a chance to persuade the employer about the candidate’s competency and capability for the job.

The general format of this letter is:

  • Details of the candidate.
  • Details of the employer.
  • The reason behind the letter.
  • Statement to show gratitude.
  • Persuade about your capabilities and skills.
  • Inform about the attached resume.

This letter needs to be written in a professional tone and although the sender can utilize it as a platform to market his skills, the letter should stay in the realms of professionalism as this may have an impact on the candidate’s impression in the eyes of the employer. In addition, sending this letter and showing gratitude, rather than only sending the resume on request, would convince the employer that the candidate is seriously interested that might lead to his increased chances of selection.

sample resume received response letter

Costco CEO stuns young boy by responding to his email asking for help with school fundraiser

Costco really is the best..

Costco teddy bear

A 12-year-old student wrote Costco's CEO asking for help.

Imagine your 12-year-old son is helping take part in his school’s Valentine’s Day fundraiser. You’d probably be proud and encouraged at the way he’s getting involved and doing something good, right?

Now imagine, as part of that effort, he decided to email the CEO of Costco , one of the most beloved big box retailers in the world . Well, that’s cute, right? But what if he told you the CEO not only wrote back but went out of his way to donate exactly what your son asked for?

It may sound too good to be true, but that’s exactly what happened when Grant Cerwin sent an email to Costco CEO Craig Jelinek . The sixth grader emailed Jelinek asking if he would donate one of Costco’s famous 93-inch teddy bears to his middle school’s fundraiser in Los Angeles:

The 12-year-old's letter to Costco's CEO was too good to ignore

“Hi Mr. Jelinek,

My name is Grant Cerwin and I am 12 years old. I go to [removed] Middle School and am the 6th grade class rep. We want to raffle one of your giant bears as a Valentine’s Day fundraiser for our school. We are part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Is there any chance Costco might donate one? My dad has a truck and we could come get it at the store. I would make sure everyone knew you gave it to us in our school newsletter, on social media and with a big sign by the bear. I know it is a long shot but I thought it couldn’t hurt to ask. We are also seeing how we might get enough money to buy one. Thanks for considering. Your friend, Grant.”

12-year-old student Grant Cerwin writes to Costco CEO Craig Jelinek

Well, it turns out the long shot was perfectly timed.

Jelinek not only saw the email but jumped into action, asking his colleague "Can we find him a teddy?" Then his lieutenant emailed their colleagues to quickly find a bear for Cerwin’s school, writing: “Do whatever it takes to find a Big Bear and set up pick up for Lesley. Keep me posted.”

And Costco CEO Craig Jelinek had the perfect response

Costco CEO Craig Jelinek steps in to help

Grant then received the following message from Costco:

“Good morning Grant. I am the Toy Supervisor at our Costco’s LA Regional office. I have good news, Costco will be donating a 93” Plush Bear to your school to use in your Valentine’s Day fundraiser! We could have it delivered to the school directly so your parents don’t have to worry about transporting it.”

Costco reached out directly to Grant Cerwin to help

With time to spare, the Big Bear was delivered to Grant and his school was able to include it in their fundraiser. And while moments like this don’t happen every day, they are a great reminder that even the biggest companies are run by real people and those people often have big hearts. Big, as in 93” plush bear big.

And let’s be honest, we’re not entirely shocked that this happened at Costco, a company that has built a well-earned reputation for treating both its customers and its employees with dignity and respect .

“It speaks volumes about the leadership at Costco that Grant got the response he did,” Grant’s mother Lesley Cerwin told Upworthy. “He is a boundlessly optimistic child and as a parent you worry the world will chip away at that positivity. I’m grateful that the team at Costco reaffirmed my son’s belief that the world is full of good people.”

“I couldn’t believe that they responded so fast and that so many people helped,” Grant told Upworthy. “They didn’t want anything, just to help our school.”

This is one of the many reasons people love Costco so much

The Costco bear was delivered to Grant Cerwin and his classmates

Something as seemingly simple as a donated teddy bear might not sound like much, but it’s examples like this that show the power of bridge-building between companies and communities.

An act of kindness in itself can go a long way. And when that is coupled with the impact it had not only on Grant and his mom, but on Grant’s classmates, you can start to see a real impact that all started with a single email.

Grant Cerwin and his classmates pose with the Costco bear.

“My teachers and friends at school are excited,” Grant said. “We all can’t believe how big it is. It takes a bunch of us to move it around. Our ASB class is working on a thank you card.”

Plus, let’s be honest, a personal touch from someone as high-profile as Craig Jelinek and his team isn’t a bad way to build customer loyalty either. As Lesley told us, “I’ve always liked Costco. Will I be even happier to shop there now? You bet. It is a great store and now I am acutely aware that it is run by amazing people.”

Couple in their 30s live permanently on cruise ships for a little over $10K a year

“i’m not a millionaire ... i just live full-time on cruise ships.”.

A magnificent cruise ship on the ocean.

Giving it all up and retiring to live on a cruise ship at 32 seems like a lifestyle choice only available to the ultra-wealthy. However, two financially savvy retired school teachers from Tennessee have managed to do just that, spending under $10,000 for the first eight months at sea.

Monica Brzoska, 32, and Jorrell Conley, 36, met in 2015 while teaching in Memphis, Tennessee. The following year, they booked a week-long cruise to Mexico, Belize, and Grand Cayman. After that, they were hooked on cruising together.

Eight years later, in March 2023, they booked a week-long Caribbean cruise. When it was over, instead of returning home to Memphis, they had a wild idea: Why not continue to book consecutive cruises? So, they did just that.

Monica was inspired to start living the life she always wanted after her father fell ill and her mother told her: "Don't wait for retirement. Follow your dreams."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Monica Brzoska (@life_by_any_means)

The couple crunched the numbers and found that if they chose the cheapest cabins and used the deals they’ve received from Carnival Cruises, they could book the first 8 months for just under $10,000. “It sounds mad, but the numbers made sense. Accommodation, food and entertainment would be included – we’d only need spending money,” Brzoska told The Sun. “And because we’d been on so many Carnival cruises, we’d earned access to some amazing offers.”

Hopping from ship to ship isn’t difficult for the couple because many disembark from the same ports. But they sometimes have to fly when they can’t walk to the next ocean liner.

The couple then quit their jobs, sold their possessions, and started a new life on the high seas. They rent out their 3-bedroom home in Memphis to maintain steady cash flow. The average 3-bedroom home in the area rents somewhere between $1200 to $1900 a month.

Over the first year of their new life, the couple completed 36 consecutive cruises. They have already visited countless destinations across the globe, but they can’t choose a favorite. "For a cultural experience, we loved Japan," Brzoska told a Carnival Cruise director on Instagram . The couple also loved Greece for its “history” and Iceland because it was the "closest to being on Mars."

One of the most incredible benefits of loving on a cruise ship is that so many things are taken care of for you. The couple never has to cook any meals, do any laundry or drive. Every night, there is something to do, whether it’s checking out a comedy show or enjoying drinks and dancing in the nightclub.

Plus, on cruises, just about all the costs are covered, so you rarely have to open your wallet. It’s a stress-free, all-inclusive lifestyle. Brzoska says that when you remove the everyday stresses from life, it’s great for your marriage. “Without the daily stresses of life, we rarely argued, but always told each other if we needed space or more time together,” she said.

The couple also makes sure to have one date night a week, during which they dress up and have a nice meal together.

Most people may be unable to give it all up and live their lives hopping from ocean liner to ocean liner. But there’s a great lesson in the story of Brzoska and Conley: You never know how much time you have left, so don’t wait for retirement to live the life of your dreams.

Upworthy has reached out to Brzoska for comment and is still awaiting a response.

A 3-year-old gave her mom a 25-word master class on what forgiveness really means.

"tonight i was taught a lesson in forgiveness by a three year old. it was a gut punch, too.".

Mom and blogger Mary Katherine Backstrom regularly shares snippets of life with her two children on her Facebook page . One particularly touching interaction with her daughter is melting hearts and blowing minds due to the three-year-old's wise words about forgiveness.

Even adults struggle with the concept of forgiveness. Entire books have been written about how and why to forgive those who have wronged us, but many still have a hard time getting it.

Who would guess that a preschooler could encapsulate what forgiveness means in a handful of innocent words?

Backstrom told the story in a now viral Facebook post:

"My daughter and I just had a knock-down, drag-out bedtime hour. Finally, about ten minutes ago, I put her to bed and through clinched teeth said 'I love you, Holland, but not another word tonight. You are going to sleep now. I'm done fussing over stuffed animals.'

'Mommy?'

I paused on the way out the door, literally biting my tongue I was so frustrated.

'What is it, Holland?'

'I DO have one more thing to say.'

Of course she did. She was standing on the bed with her hands on her hips, too. Her hair was wild and she was using her arm to wipe her tears and snot away from her face.

'Mommy,' my three year old said, staring me down with venom in her tiny voice...

'I FORGIVE YOU!!!'

Then she laid down and cried and honest to goodness, for a hot minute, I didn't know what to do.

The way she said 'I forgive you,' made it sound like cuss words.

I walked over to the bedside and leaned over.

'Baby girl, do you know what forgiveness means?'

She was still sniffling, her face shoved deep into her Little Mermaid pillow.

'Yes,' she muttered.

I really had to hear this.

'It means you were wrong, and I'm tired of being mad, and now I'm going to sleep and my heart won't have a tummy ache.'

So there you have it, folks.

Tonight I was taught a lesson in forgiveness by a three year old. It was a gut punch, too. And you're dang right I climbed in that bed and loved on her.

Because to be honest, MY heart had a bit of a tummy ache.

I was reminded by my toddler to never go to bed in anger. Because when you do, your heart will have a tummy ache.

And you know what? I've been alive for 35 years, and I've got to give it to her:

She's not wrong."

According to experts, the preschooler really isn't wrong.

According to UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center :

"Psychologists generally define forgiveness as a conscious, deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group who has harmed you, regardless of whether they actually deserve your forgiveness. Just as important as defining what forgiveness is , though, is understanding what forgiveness is not . Experts who study or teach forgiveness make clear that when you forgive, you do not gloss over or deny the seriousness of an offense against you. Forgiveness does not mean forgetting, nor does it mean condoning or excusing offenses. Though forgiveness can help repair a damaged relationship, it doesn't obligate you to reconcile with the person who harmed you, or release them from legal accountability. Instead, forgiveness brings the forgiver peace of mind and frees him or her from corrosive anger. While there is some debate over whether true forgiveness requires positive feelings toward the offender, experts agree that it at least involves letting go of deeply held negative feelings. In that way, it empowers you to recognize the pain you suffered without letting that pain define you, enabling you to heal and move on with your life."

Basically, Holland said the same thing, just in 25 kid-friendly words.

The post has been shared more than 92,000 times, and Backstrom told Upworthy she was pleasantly surprised when it went viral.

"It makes me happy when heartwarming stories go viral," she said, "because I think it's a shared slice of humanity that everyone is finding in common. And in this case, the innocence and profound wisdom that at times comes from the mouths of children."

"I think children are able to speak profound truths," she added, "because they address complex emotions in simple ways. As adults we complicate our approach to conflict. We could learn a lot from toddlers who express their frustration, hug it out, forgive, and move on. It would certainly save us a few 'heart tummy aches.'"

Indeed it would. Thank you, Holland, for the sweet reminder.

Mom offers a tour of her 'average middle-class house' and it's just what people needed to see

“let’s normalize ‘average’ because there is nothing wrong with it.".

Stephanie Murphy shares her "average" home in viral TikTok video.

Sure, it’s lovely to see pristine, perfectly curated homes that look like they belong in Architectural Digest . A little inspo never hurt anyone. But as we all know, the spotless life is simply not an achievable reality, especially for those with busy lives and limited budgets (read: most of us ).

But you know what? Maybe even the messy homes deserve some love. The ones with constant junk piles and unfinished projects and dirty dishes and misplaced toys . The homes that will never grace the cover of a magazine but still do a wonderful job of containing all the moments life has to offer—the big, small, extraordinary, mundane and everywhere in between. Cause at the end of the day, isn’t that a home’s true purpose anyway?

Highlighted in Murphy’s tour are the pantry door that’s remained unpainted for three years, blinds held together with binder clips, air conditioners held in place by duct tape, a full dish rack tray that’s “a permanent fixture” on their countertops, and not one but two junk drawers (honestly, that’s a little low by my count).

@steph_murphy Lets normalize “average” because there is nothing wrong with it. Everywhere you look on social media you see big gorgeous houses in perfect condition and its hard not to compare yours to them. But its not the norm and half the time its staged. Our house is lived in, and its filled with love and tons of memories and at the end of the day thats all that matters. ♬ vampire - Olivia Rodrigo

You’ll also notice a fridge that is covered in her kid’s artwork and school pictures. Not in any cohesive way, but merely thrown on randomly, as nature intended.

Meanwhile, in the master bedroom, Murphy and her husband’s bed have two separate blankets because neither of them like to share. A genius idea, and just another example of how we really, really don’t need to continue with marital sleeping norms that don’t actually feel comfortable. Another way is possible!

As for why Murphy decided to showcase her “average, middle-class house,” it’s all in the caption of her video:

Judging from the comments sections of this now-viral post, it seems like other people are ready for more average content.

“This is awesome!” one person wrote. “I’m constantly feeling inadequate when people have a perfect house that looks like nobody lives there!”

“I feel seen,” added another.

Hear, hear. No need to feel inadequate about having a home that’s lived in. Imperfection has its own kind of beauty.

Female doctors share bikini pics after group of mostly male researchers deemed them 'inappropriate'

"i am good at my job, i am a professional. i am a doctor. i am also a human.".

It's no surprise that employers often look at job applicants' social media profiles before hiring them. According to CareerBuilder , 70% of employers "use social media to screen candidates before hiring."

It makes sense because social media profiles can reveal a lot about someone's true personality and employers don't want to take any unnecessary risks.

The Journal of Vascular Surgery did a study where it viewed the social media profiles of 235 medical residents to see if they had "unprofessional or potentially unprofessional content."

The study found that "One-half of recent and soon to be graduating vascular surgery trainees had an identifiable social media account with more than one-quarter of these containing unprofessional content."

The paper with a warning: "Young surgeons should be aware of the permanent public exposure of unprofessional content that can be accessed by peers, patients, and current/future employers."

At first glance, this study seemed like it was helping graduates with their careers by warning them against social media posts that could get them into trouble. But the study created in a backlash from the medical community because it shamed female doctors.

The major bone of contention that medical professionals had with the study is that the team of predominantly male researchers said that "provocative posing in bikinis/swimwear," "provocative Halloween costumes," and "holding/ consuming alcohol" are all inappropriate.

There's nothing wrong with a woman wearing a bikini or anyone having a beer in public, why did the study deem them inappropriate?

The paper inspired female medical professionals to push back against the study by posting shots of themselves in swimwear and imbibing adult beverages under #MedBikini.

Some male allies got in on the hashtag, too.

The backlash prompted one of the authors of the study, Dr. Jeff Siracuse, to apologize for the paper's framing.

"Our intent was to empower surgeons to be aware and then personally decide what may be easily available for our patients and colleagues to see about us social media," Siracuse wrote on Twitter.

"However, this was clearly not the result. We realize that the definition of professionalism is rapidly changing in medicine and that we need to support our trainees and surgeons as our society changes without the appearance of judgment."

A woman with dementia adored her haircut. Her husband's letter to the stylist is everything.

"looking back, it was likely dozens of haircuts you gave that day. but one which revitalized a woman's sense of self and her singular beauty.".

Grab a tissue, folks, because this is one of those stories that has almost too much love and goodness to bear in it.

Sara Verkuilen was working at Hair Cuttery in Round Lake Beach, Illinois last winter when an older couple walked in for a haircut. "I don't think I had ever done their hair before," Verkuilen told Upworthy. "They were walk-ins."

The man and his wife were "just really cute together," she recalled. "He was so sweet with her and obviously very in love."

Little did Verkuilen know how much of an impression her personal service and professional skills would have on both them that day.

See on Instagram

The stylist shared a letter she received recently from the husband, signed only as "a grateful customer." The letter reads:

"Dear Sara,

This is a little bit awkward. But I've waited a really long time to pass this on to you.

My wife and I came in for haircuts shortly before Christmas of last year.

My wife was suffering from dementia, and you treated her as if you'd been working with dementia patients all your life. You let us sit next to each other, and when it came time for her cut you turned her chair towards me so I could watch her expression as you cut her hair.

It turned out even better than I thought it would.

Sadly, she died in March. And that haircut was one of the last, best moments of her life. She felt so pretty. She visited the mirror in her bathroom several times during the day and would come out beaming.

To see her so happy was priceless.

Looking back, it was likely dozens of haircuts you gave that day. But one which revitalized a woman's sense of self and her singular beauty. I hope you always realize the power of your profession.

It's so easy to take things like that for granted.

A grateful customer"

Verkuilen said she wishes she could contact the man.

She doesn't remember the couple's name and the letter didn't give any personal information, but it meant a great deal to her to receive it. She says she'd been feeling kind of stuck and bored in her career, which she's been in about eight years, and this letter gave her the boost she needed.

"Receiving this letter was a huge reminder why I do what I do," she said. "It's an amazing feeling seeing someone look in the mirror after a transformation and smiling. Seeing how beautiful they feel, how confidence levels change. But it's an extremely difficult career. I get burnt out easily. I hope this letter can restore faith in other stylists that are maybe doubting if this career is right for them. We touch more than hair and I hope all the stylists out there realize how important they are and how what we do can have such an impact on our clients."

She also hopes seeing the letter helps clients understand that stylists don't "just cut hair."

What a beautiful reminder to appreciate people who work in service jobs, the little things that make us happy, the "singular beauty" of our loved ones, and the time we have with them.
