1. The Blue Zones Project: Cultivating Healthier, Happier Student Lifestyles

Students research The Blue Zones, five areas of the world where people are most likely to live to be over 100. After learning about the healthy behaviors that lead to longevity, students set “Blue Zone” goals to implement within their homes and communities.

2. The Energy Bar Project: Part 1  &  Part 2

Students analyze food packaging health claims by making a trip to the grocery store, taste-testing energy bars, then creating and marketing their own healthy bars, complete with product boxes and a commercial. (This is a new project I tried this year, and my students absolutely loved it!)

3.  Exploring Dietary Guidelines Around the World (and at Home)

Let’s be real: The FDA’s new dietary guidelines are more confusing than ever. To learn to love real food, rather than fear food data, students will research dietary guidelines from around the world and create a set of guidelines for your school, using journalist  Michael Pollan’s Food Rules as an aid.

4.  A Nutrition PBL That Can Lead to Healthier School Lunch

After watching an inspirational documentary about a group of kids who bettered the lunch options in their school’s cafeteria, students work to make change in their own school with the help of an awesome advocacy kit from  DoSomething.org .

5. The Family Values Project

Family values play a key role in the decision-making process, and as teens gain more freedom, sticking to those values will help keep them safe from high-risk behaviors. In this project, students have a conversation with their parents to create a list of core values and a mission statement for their family.

6. The Alcohol Research Lab

Research on the impact of alcohol and the teenage brain is updated almost constantly. Rather than give the students the facts, let them find out for themselves as they dig up the latest details on the risks of underage drinking.

7. Teaching Kids About E-Cigarettes

Using resources provided as a launching point, students will create their own inquiry-based project to learn more about e-cigarettes.

8. An Advocacy Project to Help Kids Learn About the Benefits of Sleep

Today’s teens are horribly sleep deprived, and many of them don’t understand all of the ways that it’s negatively impacting their health. In this project, they’ll research the benefits of sleep and create an advocacy campaign to convince their classmates to get more shut-eye.

9. Stress Management for Teens

This unit plan ends on a positive note, with students making videos of their favorite healthy coping skills and stress busters. (This one is always a highlight for my sixth grade students.)

10. Positive Peer Pressure to Help Stop Bullying

Rather than take the anti-bullying angle, this project has students use a medium of their choice to encourage and support others via positive prevention methods.

11. Advocacy Through Art

In this cross-curricular project, health classes and art classes team up to create a public service announcement and a logo for an advocacy campaign of their conception.

So often we focus on the negative when talking to kids about social media, but in reality, they’re using social media to do amazing things to bring about positive social change. Teaching health isn’t what it used to be. Gone are the days of only talking about eating healthy, working out, and memorizing parts of the body. Now the focus of health education is much more holistic and comprehensive, incorporating topics like mental health, building social skills, making healthy decisions, learning how to manage money, setting goals, and living with passion and purpose (and so much more). At its core, health education is all about teaching students the specific life skills they need to build happy and healthy lives.

While this is AMAZING for students, this new approach can offer a bit of a challenge for teachers, especially if your experience with health education has primarily featured a content-based model. If your teacher training programs did not present a guide for teaching with a comprehensive, skills-based health approach. Or, if you've never been officially trained to teach health education (hello, PE teachers turned Health educators) . 

If you’ve experienced any of the following and are looking for a comprehensive guide to teaching health, you’ve come to the right place! In this post, I’m sharing a five-step plan to help you become an amazing health educator! 

Let’s dive in!

Let's start by taking a look at what comprehensive health is and why it matters. The essence of comprehensive health is an understanding that a person's total well-being is influenced by multiple dimensions (a.k.a. the  dimensions of health ). More officially, comprehensive health can be defined as  the overall condition of a person (beyond being sick or not sick), referring to an individual's total well-being. 

So why exactly does this matter? Well,  for too long, conversations (and lessons) about health have been minimized to focus only on the physical body  - be active, eat healthy, sleep well, etc. Now don't get me wrong, these habits are incredibly important and necessary, but  these habits alone do not empower a person to thrive.  I mean, if total health and happiness solely came from Physical Health, athletes and celebrities would be the happiest, most content people in the world. Right?

In truth,  a person's well-being and ability to thrive relates to various  dimensions of health and wellness. Each dimension of health playing a vital role and in need of intentional nurturing. Additionally, it is important to understand that the dimensions of health are interrelated, impacting, and influencing each other.  

This means that when it comes to teaching students how to build sustainable health and happiness in their life, it's critical they understand that their well-being doesn't hinge on a single element  (or even two or three). Instead, they need to realize that the core areas of their life each play a role in establishing well-being and need attention and care.

With this understanding of health, comprehensive health education can be defined as an educational approach focused on addressing the complex and interconnected elements of a person's life-impacting personal well-being. The goal is to teach students the necessary health skills and functional knowledge needed to actively and intentionally take ownership of all aspects of their well-being and nurture optimal health.

So how exactly do we empower students to take ownership of their lives and develop the necessary health skills and functional knowledge? The answer is skills-based health education!

Alright, now that we have a better idea of what comprehensive health looks like, we're going to dive into the skills-based health education approach to health instruction. Skills-based health education is  "A health education framework focused on mastering vital health skills and understanding essential health concepts." 

Simply put, it's an approach to teaching health that  prioritizes  teaching relevant and practical health skills over memorizing and reciting content.  It focuses on developing the essential skills needed to live healthy lives.  To clarify, this doesn't mean that there is no content instruction. Instead, it means that the instruction only focuses on the essential information a student needs to know to execute a health skill  (a.k.a. functional knowledge) .

After having a better understanding of what skills-based health education is, it’s time to examine the health skills and the dimensions of health . Together they will guide your instruction and serve as the foundation of your health curriculum. 

The National Health Education Standards have outlined key health skills individuals need to practice to build sustainable health. These skills empower an individual to take ownership of their well-being and relate to each of the dimensions of health. Here’s a quick overview of the health skills :

Along with the health skills, the dimensions of health will play a key role throughout your health instruction. Essentially, students need to learn how to use the health skills in relation to the various dimensions of health .

Feel free to review our pages (with definitions, videos, and resources) dedicated to the health skills and dimensions of health   to learn more. 

As you examine the health skills and the dimensions of health, it's important to recognize that when it comes to health,  there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution . Each student and community face unique health challenges,  requiring a customized blend of health skills and dimensions of health in their health education.  This leads us to task #4, identifying the needs of your students. 

Now that you are a skills-based health expert (if you haven't checked out our free workshop, feel free to pause and sign up) and you understand the health skills and dimensions of health , it’s time to identify the specific health needs of your students.

As you explore, some needs are pretty general and relevant to all students, like building coping skills, nurturing healthy relationships, Sexual Health education, etc. However,  your students will also be facing specific health needs connected to their life situations.  This means your task is to put on your detective's hat and do a little research to figure out your students' health needs. 

You probably already have a great idea of what health education your students need. But just in case you are looking for some more strategies, here are a few recommendations:

  • Public Health surveys 
  • Need Assessment from your school counselor 
  • Insight from fellow teachers, admin, and community members
  • Ask the students through anonymous surveys, journey entries, classroom discussions, etc.

I often find that the information gathered does a great job of identifying the dimensions of health lacking in students' lives. But it doesn't always specifically outline the health skills students need to master. If you're having the same issue, I recommend asking yourself,  "What exactly do my students need to be able to do to strengthen their health need?"

Identifying the skill or skills students need to learn can be difficult. Especially since there are many health skills related to each health issue.  Let’s look at an example.

Examples of Health Topics + Health Skills

Here’s the health issue: a public health survey shows a rise of STIs in your community's teenage and early adult population. 

  • What Dimension(s) of Health needs to be addressed? The primary dimensions of health are pretty straight forward: Sexual and Physical Health  
  • What Health Skills Need to Be Strengthened? Now, this is less straightforward because there are a few skills that may need to be addressed. Here are some possible options:
  • Analyzing Influences - Examine how the influence of friends and media impact condom usage and a person's general understanding of STI knowledge.
  • Accessing Valid Information, Services, and Products - Understand how STIs spread and where to find valid information; know where to access STIs testing and treatment; learn how to access the necessary products from a store or health care provider.
  • Interpersonal Communication Skills - Be able to express personal boundaries in terms of protection against STIs.
  • Decision Making - Build values-based decision-making skills to help make healthy choices relating to protecting against the spread of STIs.
  • Practicing Health Enhancing Behaviors - Understand what behaviors help prevent the spread of STIs and how to actively practice said behaviors in real life.
  • Self-Advocacy - Build self-advocacy skills to use in situations when STI contraction is possible.

As you can see, with each health topic, there are many health skills that need to be taught and developed. Unfortunately, this isn’t always enough time to focus on each one. So, you'll have to define the most critical health skills needed and focus on that one (or those few) . I know we all wish we could teach all of the necessary skills but t ake heart knowing that even if you can't address everything, the more students learn how to practice each health skill in general (doesn’t matter what health topic it’s in relation to), the more they will nurture their overall ability to thrive and take ownership of their health. 

Yay! You've made it to the final task, outlining your scope and sequence! That means it's time to take the information you've gathered from surveys, students, teachers, etc., and outline what your health program is going to look like. Since everyone's teaching schedule looks a bit different, I'm going to try and make this as simple as possible (which hopefully also makes it flexible and adaptable).

Your scope and sequence consist of three items for each unit:  a health topic + health skill(s) + summative project.  If you've finished the  skills-based health workshop , this should all make sense. If you haven't, I recommend pausing here and going back to the  workshop .

Because it’s a scope and sequence and not detailed lesson plans, as you plan, just share a general idea of each of the three components:

  • The Health Topic - This is the health issues students are dealing with in their life and need help navigating. 
  • The Health Skill(s) - The primary health skill(s) students will learn how to practice in relation to the health topic.
  • A Summative Health Project - This is the project students will complete showing that they understand the functional knowledge related to the health topic and that they can perform the health skill(s) in a real-life situation.

Once you’ve outlined your course, use the skills-based health roadmap and lesson planning template (from the skills-based health workshop) to plan your detailed lessons. And tah-dah, you’re ready to teach (and change lives!).

What Works In Schools : Quality Health Education

CDC’s  What Works In Schools  Program improves the health and well-being of middle and high school students by:

  • Improving health education,
  • Connecting young people to the health services they need, and
  • Making school environments safer and more supportive.

Health education is part of the primary mission of schools. It provides young people with the knowledge and skills they need to become successful learners and healthy adults. 1

Health education is a fundamental part of an overall school health program and helps youth acquire functional health knowledge, strengthens attitudes and beliefs, and builds skills needed to adopt and maintain healthy behaviors throughout their lives. 1

Health education is effective at addressing adolescent behaviors and experiences

Youth behaviors and experiences set the stage for healthy adulthood. 2-4 In particular, health behaviors and experiences related to early sexual initiation, violence, and substance use are consistently linked to poor grades and test scores and lower educational attainment, as well as other negative health outcomes. 5-14

Research suggests that well-designed and well-implemented school health programs can influence multiple health outcomes, including reducing risk behaviors related to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and unintended pregnancy, decreasing substance and tobacco use, and improving academic performance. 5,6,15,16

Providing health education as early as possible can help youth develop positive well-being, academic success, and healthy outcomes into adulthood. 17

Health Education Curriculum and Standards

Quality health education starts with a quality curriculum and student learning standards. CDC provides guidance and tools to help schools use curricula that meets their specific needs.

District and school staff can use CDC’s Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT)  to analyze, select, or develop curriculum based on meeting adolescent health needs and community priorities. 1

Health education curriculum should include:

  • A set of learning outcomes or objectives that focus on students gaining health-related knowledge, attitudes, and skills.
  • A planned progression of lessons or learning experiences that are developmentally appropriate, build on one another over time, and lead to achieving learning and health objectives.
  • Lessons or learning experiences connect to each other and reinforce important health-enhancing behaviors.
  • Content or materials follow a planned order and help teachers and students meet the learning objectives.
  • Assessment strategies to measure whether students have gained health-related knowledge, attitudes, and skills.

Health Education Standards

Health education standards are designed to establish, promote, and support health-enhancing behaviors for students in all grade levels. 1  These learning standards have been updated or are currently being revised by multiple professional organizations in school health. Versions of these standards are available here and here .

Sexual health is a critical component of health education

School-based sexual health education provides youth with the knowledge and skills they need to protect themselves from STIs/HIV,  and unintended pregnancy.

National Sex Education Standards

The National Sex Education Standards outline foundational knowledge and skills students need to navigate sexual development and grow into sexually healthy adults. The standards are designed to help schools focus on what is most essential for students to learn by the end of a grade level or grade span and can be used to create lessons and curricula with aligned learning objectives. 18

Educator and Staff Professional Development and Training

Quality health education uses qualified teachers, connects students to health services, engages parents and community partners, and fosters positive relationships between adolescents and adults who are important to them. 19-21 Successful in-service professional development programs can improve both the amount of time teachers spend on health topics and their confidence to provide health education. 22-23

Teaching health education through the development of student centered video assignment.

The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which a student centered video assignment enhanced student learning about developing and teaching a health education plan designed to address a complex public health problem. The objectives of the assignment included (1) to explore a complex public health problem, (2) practice developing a corresponding health education plan, and (3) develop and fully execute a multimedia video to deliver high impact health education and or promotion to a diverse audience. The assignment referred to as the student centered video assignment was developed and piloted at Grand Valley State University and included students participating in a 200 level undergraduate introductory public health course. Students working in groups of 3, worked through the project in multiple phases with corresponding elements: problem identification, problem solving, plan development and the creation of the video, which included four primary elements: Dig Deeper, Think, Discuss, and Watch. Upon completion of the video, students were asked to voluntarily complete a 10-question survey about the benefits of learning through a video creation assignment. A total of 15 students completed the survey with the majority either strongly agreeing or agreeing that the video assignment enhanced learning. Survey results suggest that the assignment is beneficial and favored over other assignment types. Additionally, students reported that the project was beneficial in learning the concepts and competencies associated with public health education. Finally, students indicated that the creation of videos as a means to explore and apply course concepts was favored as an assignment format in future coursework. Instructor assessment of learning outcomes occurred through ongoing grading of and feedback on the project elements. The findings reveal that students enjoyed the opportunity to engage in real world problem solving, gained insight, perspective and scope through group discussion and collaboration, and felt that they learned new skills in created the video.

Background and Rationale: Multimedia Technology and Higher Education Pedagogy in Public Health and Health Science

Changes in technology are rapidly changing our culture ( 1 ). New teaching and learning formats that rely on digital and web-based technologies have greatly influenced how instructors teach as well as how students learn ( 2 ). Resnick ( 3 ) of Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Laboratory (MIT Media Lab) describes our society as rapidly transforming into a creative society, one in which the skilled and expert workers of the past century are replaced by creative workers adept at problem-solving. Such a trend suggests the importance of creativity in student learning and emphasizes that problem solving is not only a critical skill, but also one that can be facilitated through technological tools. Technology can enhance effective learning in many ways ( 4 – 6 ), such as providing greater depth of functionality, feedback, interactivity and simulation ( 2 ). A bank of empirical research demonstrates that blogging, video blogging (vlogging) and podcasting, when used as a part of classroom instruction, can enhance student performance, foster reflection, creativity, and knowledge construction ( 7 , 8 ). Likewise, students can be instructed to create their own multimedia work as part of a learning activity or assignment. The work of Fredenberg ( 9 ) and Armstrong et al. ( 10 ) provide examples of how students can create podcasts, rather than listening to them as an instructional tool. Fredenberg ( 9 ) reported that students are more engaged and felt more confident in their skills and abilities after mastering a podcast assignment. Armstrong et al. ( 10 ) required student-created podcasts (students could elect audio vs. video) as a means to learn objective driven business communication. Having students produce their own podcasts provided a novel way for students to disseminate information while also developing communication and literacy skills through teamwork, organization, time management, technical literacy, and overall planning ( 10 ).

The core competencies for public health professionals and other health care providers rest heavily on communication skills, literacy, creativity, problem solving, and the appropriate use of technology. Having students explore, create, and disseminate through video and other multi- media formats, such as podcasts and vlogging, may offer a novel and effective tool for enhancing these skills. Despite the growing body of research and popularity of multimedia in higher education, health education, and society, little scholarship has addressed the use of student created video and the pedagogical benefits specifically for health science students. This paper seeks to offer a starting point for exploring how student created videos can enhance health science and public health education.

Pedagogical Framework and Principles: Student Created Videos in Problem Based Learning

Students engaged in health profession education encounter numerous “wicked problems” that require teaching and learning strategies that allow for flexibility, trial and error, and engagement beyond text book and lecture based learning. The student centered video assignment was developed, in part, as a strategy to facilitate this type of learning in undergraduate courses with a public health focus, such as Introduction to Public Health. The course was taught by a faculty member from the Grand Valley State University, College of Health Professions, Master's of Public Health (MPH) Program (MPH). The student centered video assignment was developed jointly by the authors, each having over 10 years of teaching experience in the health professions. The course is offered each semester in multiple sections and has been taught multiple times by each of the authors. The class utilized a traditional in seat format while using inquiry based learning as the pedagogical approach. This approach challenges students to learn through directed questions, problems, and challenges that students work to address. Additionally, the courses incorporated Problem Based Learning (PBL) which is known as a teaching and learning approach that facilitates cultivation of knowledge, critical thinking, assessment and evaluation in solving complex, real world problems. Students engaged in PBL set to exploring and solving problems in small groups with the objective of promoting “constructive, self-directed, collaborative and contextual activity” ( 11 ). PBL research in nursing and clinical education showed improvement in critical thinking and critical reasoning ( 12 ), while research on the process of PBL reflects gains in collective and collaborative knowledge building ( 13 ).

Principles and Competencies in Health Education and Promotion

The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) is the accrediting body for all schools and programs of public health in the United States. They have identified 22 primary core competencies for public health students and professionals. Of the 22 competencies identified by CEPH, 6 were used in the organization of the two courses in which the student centered video assignment was implemented ( Table 1 ). The competencies selected align with the course objectives and public health program concepts. Execution of the student centered video assignment provides ample opportunity for students to practice and build competency in these areas. For example, competency 16, 21, and 22 is addressed through group collaboration and working with a complex public health issue. Competency 18, 19, and 20 is achieved through the creative development of the video, in which a public health message and health promotion tool are developed for a target population ( Table 1 ).

Achieving competency requires meaningful student learning and mastery of skills related to analysis, assessment, planning, communication, management, and systems thinking ( 14 ). Video creation using a problem based learning approach allows for students to practice these skills through engaging with a real world problem in small groups and to explore and practice mastering a new technology.

Learning Environment

Grand Valley State University is a midsize, teaching intensive University located in the Midwest. The College of Health Professions houses 17 undergraduate and graduate health profession programs. The Department of Public Health offers a Master's Degree in Public Health (MPH) and includes several introductory undergraduate courses. The student centered video assignment was created by the authors who are faculty from the MPH program who teach undergraduate and graduate public health courses. The goal was to create a novel course learning activity that facilitated innovative and collaborative development of course work that is student centered, linked to real world public health issues, problem focused and outside of traditional course projects, such as research papers and or presentations. This assignment was developed and piloted in a 200-level undergraduate introductory public health course Students are generally traditional undergraduate college students at the sophomore or junior level interested in exploring a health related degree and or career. The undergraduate public health courses provide a valuable opportunity for undergraduate students to gain awareness and knowledge of the public health profession and the MPH degree. The students in the course that utilized the student centered video assignment are representative of the larger undergraduate student body. Further, students enrolled in the course as well as the students that completed the course evaluation and assignment evaluation reflect a general health professions student body that is disproportionately female.

Video Creation Assignment

The video creation assignment was developed and piloted in the 15 weeks fall semester of 2017. The overall purpose of the assignment was to provide students with a robust, collaborative, innovative, learning opportunity in which a complex public health problem are identified, explored, and responded to through the creation of a culturally appropriate health education video. The assignment was completed in four phases over a 12 weeks period, with each phase having an associated learning element. The phases and elements for the assignment are informed through the PBL pedagogical approach of the course as well as the CEPH competencies listed in Table 1 . The following sections describe the objectives and course work associated with each phase and for phase 4, each element of the student centered video assignment.

The objective of phase 1 is to introduce and facilitate student exploration of real world public health problems. In order to achieve this objective students are randomly assigned to groups of 3–4 depending on the number of students in the course. Over a 3–4 weeks period of time, students are given access to course materials through the University learning platform which include scholarly research articles, journalistic documentaries, and web resources that reflect ongoing and emergent public health problems that are salient to health promotion and or health education. For example, students review topics like vaccine preventable infections and outbreaks, drug use during pregnancy, harm reduction measures among homeless and drug addicted youth, vaping, and sleep hygiene among college students. Students explored the problems together in class and through consensus, elected a problem of interest that is explored and analyzed in Phase 2.

A second learning activity in Phase 1 is the introduction of and experimentation with video creation technology. Students viewed professionally developed TED-Ed video talks, which served as an exemplar and model for the structure of the student created video. Students were asked to watch health related Ted-Ed talks and to reflect upon the message, format, effectiveness, and efficiency of the message.

Class time during weeks 4–6 is used to discuss and describe how to explore, evaluate, and assess root causes and systems level factors related to the selected public health problem. The objective of Phase 2 is to use principles of descriptive Epidemiology, such as time, place and person, to explore the natural history, context, and scope of the selected public health problem. In this phase, the first element, “Dig Deeper,” is introduced.

The public health problem identified in Phase 1 becomes the focus of the Dig Deeper Element introduced in Phase 2. Students are asked to dig deeper into their problem by searching for and evaluating relevant and credible literature and web resources. Students were provided with a website evaluation tool, the CRAAP, to assist in reviewing web information ( 15 ). Each group member composed a single paragraph between 250 and 500 words that included a minimum of three credible references and summarized their search and evaluation. Group members then worked collaboratively to combine the paragraphs into a concise health education or health promotion message relevant to their public health problem. As an introductory undergraduate course, gaining scope and depth of resources accessed and utilized was not the intention. Rather, the dig deeper element was considered a skill building opportunity for group collaboration and health information seeking, assessing and summarizing. Basic instructions for the Dig Deeper Element are provided in Appendix A .

The development of a video health education or health promotion plan is the objective of Phase 3. The plan becomes the framework for the actual video that the students produce in Phase 4. The basic format of the plan is aligned with the TED-Ed lesson creation guide and consists of a short informative message derived from the Dig Deeper element, thinking questions related to the message, a learn more section and a discussion section ( 16 ). The first step of Phase 3 is to complete the “Think Element,” in which students were required to create a series of multiple choice and true or false questions, which addressed the content from the Dig Deeper Element. The questions check for understanding of the content presented in the Dig Deeper element. Students were encouraged to develop thought-provoking questions at a Bloom's level of Analysis or higher. Basic instructions for the Think Element are provided in Appendix B .

The second step of Phase 3 is the Discuss element. The Discuss element required each student within the group to compose a thoughtful discussion question pertaining to the information provided in the Dig Deeper element and complimentary to the Think element. The purpose of the Discuss element is to provide an opportunity for viewers of the video to discuss and further explore the topic of the video. Students were encouraged to review Guidelines for Developing Juicy Discussion Questions ( 17 ). Groups were also encouraged to create a Google Doc so that each student could peer review and edit the discussion questions. Students were limited to 750-character limit. Basic instructions for the Think Element are provided in Appendix C .

In phase 4, student groups developed and executed TED-Ed like educational videos using the Watch element. Student groups were required to create an original video incorporating the Dig Deeper, Think, and Discuss elements they had completed in phases 1–3. Groups applied their topic research, questions, and discussion content to a storyboard template provided by the instructor. The instructor provided students with access to PowToons for Education as the medium or technology used for creating the actual video. PowToons offers a free educational subscription to web-based animation software designed to create animated videos ( 18 ). The videos were ~5 min long and were presented in class on the last day Basic instructions for Phase 4 or the Watch Element are provided in Appendix D .

Setting and Participants

The setting for the student centered video assignment was an in seat undergraduate introduction to public health course with 48 students. Two of the 48 students were male and 46 were female. All students in the course completed the assignment as part of the course work.

Student feedback and learning related to the student centered video assignment was gathered through an evaluation. As the assignment was part of the course, informed consent for participating in the assignment was not needed nor obtained. Informed consent was obtained for the evaluation of the assignment that took place following the viewing of the videos in the last class meeting. The Grand Valley State University Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved the evaluation and deemed the study exempt. The evaluation of student perception of the student-centered video assignment included 10 Likert scaled questions (rating questions 1–7, 1 strongly disagree-−7 strongly agree.) Forty-eight students were emailed the survey following the last day of class. Fifteen students completed the survey for a 31% return rate.

Of the 15 students who completed the survey the majority either strongly agreed or agreed that the video assignment enhanced learning. Survey results suggest that the assignment is beneficial and favored over other assignment types, such as traditional course research papers and or oral paper or poster presentations. Likewise, students would prefer the video assignment over other types of assignments in future classes. Additionally, students reported that the project helped them to apply and develop understanding of the concepts and CEPH competencies associated with introductory public health education. A total of 86% of the students indicated that the student-created video lesson enhanced their learning of public health content. Additionally, 73% of the students thought that creating videos to address a public health issue was a useful experience. Seventy-three percent also indicated that the student-centered video assignment was an important exercise in helping them better understand critical public health issues. Table 2 and reflect the survey questions and student response regarding the student centered video assignment.

It is not clear whether the video format or the PBL learning approach associated with the assignment influenced student preferences and responses. However, this initial evaluation along with instructor evaluation of the assignment elements completed by the groups, suggests that students enjoyed the opportunity to engage in real world problem solving, gained insight, perspective and scope through group discussion and collaboration, and felt that they learned new skills in created the video.

Overall, this project received strong and positive evaluations from students that serve as a starting point for further development, use and evaluation of similar video creation assignments. A primary strength of this assignment and preliminary evaluation is that it offers credibility and feasibility of student-created videos as a learning tool in higher education. In addition to offering a fun, innovative and novel skill set in the way of video creation, the assignment may offer valuable means for students to develop skills in problem solving and collaboration. Such skills are necessary in the modern workplace where sophistication and complexity of problems is evolving and changing. Furthermore, the video assignment was perceived to be useful in addressing key competencies related to public health and health education which are also becoming more ambiguous and complex. Limitations to the study include the moderately sized sample of students as well as the limited number of students who completed the survey. Furthermore, the generalizability of these findings is limited by the fact that this research was conducted within a single university and a single course.

This assignment serves as an example of an innovative and complex assignment with implications and consequences related to learning but also to achieving high impact learning at the undergraduate level. In other words, undergraduates undertaking this assignment are forced to confront uncomfortable and often controversial public health issues that have no clear good or bad, right or wrong answers. Success is not dependent upon memorization of course concepts but on a students ability and willingness to identify and confront their own learning styles, expectations, and collegiality in working with the instructor, class mates, group members and tangentially, the population of people their video is meant to address.

Recommendations for Educators

The experience of the assignment from the perspective of the instructor offers guidance and caution for other educators willing or curious to take on such an assignment. First, explicit instructions along with a rationale should be given to students at the outset of the semester or work period. The basic components of a student groups, a real life problem related to the course topic and or discipline and a strategy for the development of video contents and video creation are all that are needed to develop a similar assignment. However, it should be noted that students in the course conveyed concern over the timeline, uncertainty in understanding assignment expectations, and in some cases, wanted to jump ahead in creating a video without utilizing the phases and elements. Providing a detailed map of the project ahead of time may ease student concern and better facilitate dedicated in class work time. In this regard, instructors should be willing and able to dedicate a significant portion of in seat class time (45–60 min per element) to group work in completing the elements of assignment. Other aspects of the assignment, such as accessing and viewing TED-Ed lessons and public health resources can be facilitated through an online course delivery platform, such as Moodle or Blackboard. A second recommendation for educators is to seek ways to extend the work of the video creation outside of the classroom. The ability to showcase and “test out” the video with a real target population was requested by the students. The ability to self-select a problem and to work on it in a deliberate way appears to raise interest and investment in the project among students. Finally, as an assignment fully entrenched in collaborative group work, care and consideration should be given to address students who are either uncomfortable or unwilling to engage fully and fairly in group work. Likewise, the instructor should acknowledge, address, and provide a model for handling disagreement within groups. A policy, for example, included in the course syllabus could provide a pathway for students to address concerns among themselves prior to contacting the instructor. The use of a self and peer evaluation that is included in the final course grade may also provide incentive or meaningful consequence for students who do not participate fully or underperform in the group work.

Instructor Reflection on Evaluation of the Assignment

The instructor reviewed and provided feedback to groups upon completion and submission of each element within each phase of the project. The video assignment work was intentionally designed to be low stakes, meaning that groups received a complete or incomplete for each element with the expectation that feedback given would be considered in the ongoing work, resulting in a strong and appropriate video. Only the final video was scored and included the self and peer evaluation. In this way, each group member receives his or her own unique score rather than a base score for the group. The evaluation matrix used for the final video displayed in class included assessment based on the 4 elements and the CEPH competencies. This included the representativeness of the information provided in the Dig Deeper element; the complexity and appropriateness of the Think element and Discussion questions; and the overall aesthetic value and quality of the video, it's length, and it's overall message. Graduate level courses could significantly increase the complexity and scope of the evaluation matrix to include elements, such as health and cultural literacy, sophistication, timeliness and appropriateness of the literature and resources used to develop the health education plan, and pre- and post-test elements to gauge viewer learning. Finally, anectodal evidence from student work, comments and discussion offer further support for this type of assignment. Students provided thoughtful, well-written, well-supported work that reflected the healthy struggle of reaching group understanding and agreement and to conceptualize difficult and complex problems.

Further studies should examine more closely the specific characteristics of the assignment that may cultivate benefit in learning and how student centered, problem based, collaborative course work around a short, audio visual rather than written assignment can be useful in attaining high level learning outcomes.

The use of a student centered video assignment may be a novel and innovative strategy to approach the development of problem solving and group work in the classroom. The assignment described here was received positively by students and offers insight into the myriad complexities of teaching about difficult, evolving, and sophisticated issues both in and outside of the health professions. The small but positive results of the student survey as well as the assessment of student learning witnessed by the instructor should encourage other educators to develop similar assignments and to undertake additional studies to evaluate the effectiveness, merits, and strengths of creating video in public health coursework.

Project-based learning is a hot topic in many schools these days, as educators work to make learning more meaningful for students. As students conduct hands-on projects addressing real-world issues, they dig deeper and make personal connections to the knowledge and skills they’re gaining. But not just any project fits into this concept. Learn more about strong project-based learning ideas, and find examples for any age or passion.

What is project-based learning?

Project-based learning (PBL) uses real-world projects and student-directed activities to build knowledge and skills. Kids choose a real-world topic that’s meaningful to them (some people call these “passion projects”), so they’re engaged in the process from the beginning. These projects are long-term, taking weeks, months, or even a full semester or school year. Students may complete them independently or working in small groups. What makes a good PBL project?

In many ways, PBL is more like the work adults do in their daily jobs, especially because student efforts have potential real-world effects. A strong PBL project:

  • Addresses a real-world issue or problem
  • Requires sustained and independent inquiry, in and out of the classroom
  • Allows students voice and choice throughout the project
  • Combines elements of many disciplines
  • Includes collaboration with public partners, such as universities, community organizations, or businesses
  • Produces a public product that is seen by those outside the school community
  • Covers a complete process, including activities like research, design, production, marketing or public awareness, and enlisting supporters or investors

Outdoor Project-Based Learning Ideas

  • Create a new local park, or improve an existing one by adding new features or providing needed maintenance.
  • Plant a community garden to provide food for a soup kitchen, food pantry, or other organization.
  • Design and create a butterfly, pollinator, or other wildlife garden to support the local ecosystem.
  • Build a new walking or biking trail that’s safe for people of all ages to use.
  • Devise and implement a way to reduce litter in your community.
  • Set up and manage a school or community compost pile, and distribute the resulting soil to those who need it most.
  • Find and help the public use a new way to grow food that requires less soil, water, or fertilizers, which are in short supply in some parts of the world.

  • Add collaborative artwork like murals or other displays to school hallways, bathrooms, or grounds.

  • Come up with ways to celebrate your school’s diversity and improve relationships between all students.
  • Start and run a school store , including inventory, financial plans, and marketing.

  • Start an awareness campaign on a topic that’s important to you, like anti-bullying, healthy living, protecting the environment, civil rights, equality and equity, etc.
  • Come up with and implement ways to increase voter turnout in your community, especially among younger voters.
  • Write, record, and share with a wider audience your own TED Talk–style video on an issue that hasn’t been covered yet or on which you have a unique perspective.
  • Devise and implement ways for unheard voices to be amplified in your school or community.
  • Write and publicly perform a play that highlights a social issue that’s important to you.
  • Look for areas in your community that present challenges to those with disabilities, and help to improve them to overcome those challenges.
  • Research, write, and publicly present and defend a position paper on an issue that’s important to your community.
  • Choose a real court case, then research the law and work with legal experts to prepare and present your own case as you would in a courtroom.
  • Write, edit, seek, and incorporate real-world feedback, and publish or publicly present your own book, poem, or song on an issue that’s important to you.
  • Start a program to teach a specific group (e.g., preschoolers, senior citizens, business owners) to care for and protect the environment.
  • Plan and hold a fundraiser to support an issue you care about.
  • Choose a law you feel is unjust, and write, research, and publicly present and defend a position paper about your desired change.

STEM Project-Based Learning Ideas

  • Create an app that meets a specific purpose for a specific audience.
  • Invent something new that the world needs, and then fund, create, and sell your product in the community.
  • Design a game to help students learn important STEM concepts.
  • Find a simple way to improve an existing product, especially if it cuts costs or improves environmental sustainability.
  • Explore ways to reduce the amount of waste we produce, especially plastic and other landfill-bound items.
  • Write a book or graphic novel that’s entertaining but also teaches kids about science or math.
  • Devise new ways to provide clean drinking water to communities where water is scarce.
  • Build an effective solar oven people can use to cook during extended power outages, or in areas where electricity isn’t available.
  • Work with a university or STEM organization to gather, analyze, and present real-world scientific data.
  • Design a building to fit a specific purpose or need, including researching the requirements and zoning laws, accurately drafting a plan, determining the costs, and presenting the plan to the proposed client.
  • Create an interactive hands-on exhibit to teach people about STEM concepts.
  • Determine a type of website you believe is missing, then research, build, and publish the site you envision.

Creative Arts Project-Based Learning Ideas

  • Organize an art show for the community, seeking out those who ordinarily might not have a chance to display their work.
  • Create and teach an art class in your area of expertise to children, the elderly, or another segment of the population.
  • Design a mural for an area in your community that needs beautification, and seek funding or other assistance from community members to install it.
  • Write a play about a topic that’s meaningful to you or your community. Work with the community to stage a performance for all to attend.
  • Invite local dancers to perform at a school or community Festival of Dance, highlighting a variety of cultures and dance styles.
  • Start a regular writer’s workshop where community writers can come together to share and seek feedback. Invite local authors or publishing experts to speak as guests.
  • Collect stories, poems, and essays from local authors, and put them together into a book. Sell the book to raise money for a cause that’s important to local writers.
  • Gather singers or instrumentalists from your community into a choir or band. Put on a concert to raise money for a special cause, or take your choir on tour to local retirement homes, hospitals, etc.
  • Write a song about a person or cause that’s important to you. Produce and record the song, then find a way to share it with others.
  • Make a short film about a local hero, community event, or local place. Invite others to do the same, and organize a local film festival.

While mental health may not be the easiest topic to introduce to students, it is an important element of total health and wellness. It’s also easier than you think to incorporate mental health projects into the classroom. 

The importance of mental health programs for students

Basic mental health programs help strengthen students’ development and maintenance of a healthy mindset, and to encourage them to explore mental wellness advocacy in their communities . Research shows that equipping students with knowledge and tools — such as cognitive-behavioral skills — not only improves their ability to deal with stressful situations but it also lays the groundwork for preventing significant mental health issues in the future. After exploring a variety of mental health awareness topics for students, we’ve put together these three easy-to-implement mental health project ideas.

Project #1: Write from a Different Viewpoint Activity

It’s All in Your Viewpoint lesson from the Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health

Our first mental health project is a writing activity on being able to put yourself in someone else’s vantage point. Understanding different perspectives is an essential element of good mental health. It’s easy to get distracted by being “right” and to fall into the habit of doing or interpreting something a particular way.

If you were to ask your students, “What has a head and four legs?” you may expect answers focused on animals and people, but how many might think of a bed or a table? We can teach our students to look at this riddle (and life’s problems) from a different angle and learn that there may be more than one answer.

From Write From a Different Viewpoint ,

 “Have the class select a story or tale with which they are all familiar. As a class, review the basic plot points, then list all of the characters on the board. Using a first-person narrative, have each student rewrite the story from a viewpoint other than the main character’s. (Even writing from a minor character’s viewpoint can be fun!)”

Project #2: Develop a Personal Mental Wellness Plan

To give students a basis for understanding what affects their mental wellness and some strategies to draw from, have them complete lessons 1-6 from Understanding Mental Wellness , a free online course from EVERFI.   

Once students understand that their mental health requires practice and exercise like their physical health, have students develop a personal plan for supporting and checking in with themselves, using the following steps.  

  • “What challenges do you have in your life this year?” Encourage students to chunk their challenges as needed. For example, if a student is applying to higher education in the fall, “applying to college” and “securing financial aid” may be 2 challenges that can be grouped together.  
  • Have students draft a plan for how they will support their personal mental wellness as they face each challenge, using strategies from the online lessons they already completed.
  •   Invite students to share their plans for supporting mental health. This can be done as a group or in pairs. (You can even develop a class-wide plan to display for ongoing check-ins.) Discuss how the actions taken will support mental health and wellness and make it possible to deal with life’s challenges.  

Project #3: Stamp Out Stigma with Mental Health Day Poster Creation

According to The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), 60% of people dealing with a mental illness won’t seek help due to the associated negative attitudes and beliefs regarding mental health conditions.

Have students create posters presenting information about a chosen or assigned mental health disorder. Ask that students focus on respect and knowledge in their approach. Language in this assignment should work to destigmatize the presented information instead of reinforcing inaccuracies and misunderstandings sometimes presented in pop culture. Feature the posters throughout the school halls or your classroom.

About Nursing Research Papers

When do nursing students write research papers.

Most of the time, you won't be designing, conducting, and evaluating new research. Instead, your projects will focus on learning the research process and the scientific method. You'll achieve these objectives by evaluating existing nursing literature and sources and defending a thesis.

However, many nursing faculty members do conduct original research. So, you may get opportunities to participate in, and publish, research articles.

Example Research Project Scenario:

In your maternal child nursing class, the professor assigns the class a research paper regarding developmentally appropriate nursing interventions for the pediatric population. While that may sound specific, you have almost endless opportunities to narrow down the focus of your writing. 

You could choose pain intervention measures in toddlers. Conversely, you can research the effects of prolonged hospitalization on adolescents' social-emotional development.

What Does a Nursing Research Paper Include?

Your professor should provide a thorough guideline of the scope of the paper. In general, an undergraduate nursing research paper will consist of:

Introduction : A brief overview of the research question/thesis statement your paper will discuss. You can include why the topic is relevant.

Body : This section presents your research findings and allows you to synthesize the information and data you collected. You'll have a chance to articulate your evaluation and answer your research question. The length of this section depends on your assignment.

Conclusion : A brief review of the information and analysis you presented throughout the body of the paper. This section is a recap of your paper and another chance to reassert your thesis.

UC Davis School of Medicine Student Advances One Health Coalition to Promote Interdisciplinary Action

Rawlings Lyle is a fourth-year medical student working towards a Master of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research at the UC Davis School of Medicine . With an emphasis in dermatology and wound healing, Lyle has an extensive background in the medical field and wants to use his knowledge to promote global health worldwide.

Given his interests and background, Lyle became involved with the One Health Institute , which works at the interface of animals, people and the environment to solve complex health and conservation challenges.

Expertise and Interest in Wildfires

Raised in Southern Oregon, Rawlings comes from a family of industrious individuals with a wealth of expertise in combatting wildfires. Building on this unique history, one of Lyle’s most memorable global experiences was directing a One Health coalition on the impact of wildfires. Combining the three main areas of One Health, he led an engaging talk that covered how wildfires can affect humans, animals, and the environment. In addition to discussing his family’s role in wildfire protection, Lyle moderated a panel of experts in the field who went further in-depth into areas like evacuation, response to livestock, and the social determinants of wildfires.

“Forest fires are very real for us. Having to evacuate your home is something that has happened to my family multiple times. It’s an area that I was passionate about but it’s also something that globally affects multiple communities.”

From Wildfires to Wound Healing

His specialty in wound healing, including burn victims, brings an additional personal element to his work and commitment to One Health. Originally interested in pediatric oncology, Lyle discovered his passion for wound healing while completing his third year of clinical rotations. Standing in on a burn surgery, he realized how deeply he cared about patients battling significant scars, burns, and wounds.

“Through my training, I recognized that you can only do so much with a scalpel and that many of these patients needed someone who cared about them beyond the table. And who could see them and actually talk to them about what life is like at home.”

While working at Shriners Children’s Hospital in Sacramento, Lyle worked with a burn patient who had been life-flighted to Sacramento from Mexico after sustaining serious injuries and burns in a house explosion. Combining his initial interest in pediatrics with his dermatology specialty, Lyle has a deep devotion and care for his patients that is reflected through his experiences with One Health.  

Global Engagement in a Changing Landscape

Although Lyle’s global health opportunities with UC Davis were limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this did not stop him from creating meaningful change and fostering the relationships needed to pursue a successful medical career. Recalling his two-year experience as a service and religious missionary in Colombia, he touched on how impactful this was and the close bond he developed with the continent and people of South America.

“Working with South America has been a really important aspect of my life. I will always be connected to it in many ways.”

Noting the need to provide further outreach toward Pan-American countries, Lyle acknowledged how One Health has given him the tools needed to move forward and recognize that global health can be pursued anywhere. With over one hundred countries represented at the symposium, modern technology has allowed the world to become increasingly interconnected and opens incredible doors of opportunity for growth. Lyle remarked, “You don’t have to be off trekking through another country to make a difference.”

Additionally, when asked what advice he would give his fellow Aggies interested in global experiences, Lyle was adamant about stating that you can do something now . While a degree and title may look nice, he conceded that ability is what matters. “The people who actually make a difference are those who act. The people who do.”

UC Davis provides a range of resources to help students take action. Taking advantage of these opportunities himself, Lyle is an active member of the Global Impact Fellows Program , where he serves as a project lead for the One Health Symposium. Illustrating how global experiences can manifest within one's community, Lyle epitomizes the ability to magnify small actions into something much bigger.

As Lyle progresses toward earning the title of Doctor, he continues to inspire global curiosity, understanding, and engagement in all those he encounters. A true “Global Aggie,” his dedication to promoting global health, evident through his leadership in organizing the One Health Symposium, showcases the impact one individual can have on a global scale.

Binghamton University student’s proposal for international student health workshop wins Road Map funding

Inijesu Taiwo, MD, wants to help Binghamton University’s 1,800+ international students get the information they need to navigate the U.S. healthcare system more effectively, enhancing their health and well-being and improving their integration on campus and in the community.

To accomplish this, Dr. Taiwo, who is graduating next month with a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences , submitted a proposal to Binghamton University’s Road Map Strategic Plan to create a healthcare information and resources workshop.

“Crossing Borders: A Health Literacy Journey for International Students” supports Binghamton’s Strategic Priority 6 (internationalization) and is one of only four student-submitted proposals chosen in April 2024 to receive Road Map funding . Six faculty/staff submissions were also funded out of 124 total submissions.

“I chose to pursue an MPH at Binghamton University because I’m a medical doctor passionate about research and global health,” Dr. Taiwo said. “I want to make a difference on a larger scale, impacting populations rather than individuals. Binghamton University offered the perfect blend of opportunities to delve into research and contribute to global health initiatives, aligning perfectly with my career aspirations.”

BingUNews sat down with Dr. Taiwo to learn more about her winning proposal.

How did you come up with the topic for your proposal?

I brainstormed topics for my capstone project and decided to research the awareness and utilization of health services among Binghamton University students. Being an international student myself, I realized I wasn’t aware of many services available, and I wanted to explore whether this was common among the student population.

Through conversations with other international students and my research, I discovered this lack of awareness was widespread. This led me to the idea of creating a workshop to educate this student population about the available health services on and off campus, as well as how to navigate the U.S. healthcare system.

How does the topic fit in with your interest in public health?

Health and healthcare literacy is one of my research interests; it fits perfectly into that.

How great is the need for this type of program for international students?

The need for a health literacy workshop for international students is underscored by literature highlighting their limited awareness of available healthcare services, language barriers affecting their understanding of health information and cultural differences influencing their healthcare-seeking behaviors. My capstone research further validates this need, revealing widespread gaps in knowledge and utilization of health services among international students at Binghamton University, emphasizing the importance of targeted educational interventions to improve their healthcare access and outcomes.

What was your reaction to learning your proposal won Road Map funding?

I was really happy and excited, but I was also surprised. It was the first grant I ever submitted to a reviewing body, and it was amazing to see that what I learned in class prepared me to write one.

You’ll be graduating in May, so how will the health literacy program advance if you won’t be here?

I will work with Kimberly Peabody, director of the B-Healthy: Healthy Campus Initiative, to design the workshop and make all the necessary connections needed to ensure the project is implemented.

What is the timeline for the project?

The plan is to debut the Health Literacy Workshop in September, with intentions to host it every fall after that.

What do you hope students participating in the workshop get out of it?

I hope the students will understand more about the U.S. healthcare system and that they will be encouraged and more confident to utilize all the available services on and off campus when needed.

What are your plans after you graduate?

I am searching for research positions and considering getting a PhD in medical anthropology.

IU School of Medicine students Madeline Cory, Om Dalal, Bethlehem Daniel and Ryan McArdle will travel to Eldoret, Kenya, to learn about every facet of the AMPATH partnership and complete a project with an IU faculty mentor.

A summer of personal and professional growth awaits four Indiana University School of Medicine students selected as Slemenda Scholars by the IU Center for Global Health Equity . Rising second-year students Madeline Cory, Om Dalal, Bethlehem Daniel and Ryan McArdle will travel to Eldoret, Kenya, to learn about every facet of the AMPATH partnership and complete a project with an IU faculty mentor.

AMPATH, the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare, is a partnership between academic health centers to deliver health care, train the next generation of health care providers and conduct research to improve lives around the world. IU School of Medicine physicians began the partnership with Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) and Moi University School of Medicine in 1988. IU leads the AMPATH consortium of 15 universities around the world and has had full-time faculty in Kenya for more than 30 years. The partnership now also includes sites in Ghana, Mexico and Nepal.

“These students have this tremendous opportunity early in their education to see the model of equitable global health partnership that IU helps to lead,” said Debra Litzelman, MA, MD, MACP , director of education for the IU Center for Global Health Equity which coordinates the Slemenda Scholars program. “This experience will lay the foundation for a future medical career that prioritizes care for people in underserved communities both around the world and in Indiana,” she continued.

Each of the selected students was led to the experience through a personal history or interest in tackling existing healthcare inequities.

Cory volunteers at Beacon Community Center, an organization that supports individuals who are unhoused in the Bloomington community. “I recognized how those who are unhoused experience numerous limitations to receiving proper health care. I am interested in gaining more experience with vulnerable populations to better understand how to increase availability, accessibility and acceptability to health care. I have been able apply my public health background to working with resource-limited populations within the United States, I am eager to expand my global health knowledge by working with populations in different countries,” said Cory, a Valparaiso native who received her undergraduate degrees in biology and neuroscience from IU Bloomington and now attends medical school on the same campus.

“I appreciate that AMPATH focuses on creating healthcare programs based on the needs of the community by working alongside patients and healthcare providers within the community. I believe that successful healthcare programs result from collaboration in the form of sharing knowledge, new ideas and empowering one another,” she continued.

Dalal is part of the Rural Health Track at the IU School of Medicine campus in Terre Haute and was president of the Timmy Global Health organization for two years while an undergraduate at Indiana State University earning a degree in biology. “My interest in global health stems from my background as an immigrant as well as my experiences working with the Timmy Global Health organization. I come from a family of farmers in rural India and every time I visit my extended family, I am taken aback by the disparity in healthcare between what they have access to and what I have access to in the United States. As such, my initial motivation to pursue medicine at the global level began with the goal of reducing the gap in healthcare disparities,” said Dalal.

“The barriers that patients face in rural America are not so different from those seen in other underserved areas around the world,” he continued. “The Slemenda Scholars program would serve as an optimal intersection between my interest in global health and my passion for working in underserved areas like rural America.”

The Slemenda Scholars program began in 1998 and honors late IU faculty member Charles Slemenda, DrPH, who had a passion for international medical education. Dr. Slemenda spent three years in Lesotho working as a public health worker after completing his MPH in health services administration. The award in his name helps pay for travel, room and board and a small stipend for the students to participate in the partnership. The Dr. Talmage Bosin International Study Fund, the Brater Family Scholarship and the IU School of Medicine-Terre Haute join the IU Center for Global Health Equity this year in providing funds to support this unique learning experience. 

“My worldview, from a very young age, has been greatly influenced by my identity as the daughter of Ethiopian and Eritrean immigrants. As an aspiring physician with interdisciplinary interests in global health, research, and science communication, I am confident that the opportunities afforded to me by this experience will facilitate my growth,” said Daniel, an IU School of Medicine Indianapolis student from Carmel, Indiana. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, where she triple majored in neuroscience, medicine, health, and society, and communication of science and technology, Daniel also engaged in both local and international service as a co-president of her school’s Timmy Global Health chapter. At IU, she serves as the community service chair for the Student National Medical Association.

“Growing up, I would go to school and be immersed in American culture, and come home to traditional foods and talks about ongoing events back home. This dichotomy made me naturally curious about the world around me. As I got older and became more cognizant of the inequities that existed throughout the world, I vowed to serve as an advocate for change,” recalls Daniel. “The prospect of learning directly from healthcare workers and community members in Eldoret is of great interest to me. As I continually grow as a student of global and public health, learning more about the lived experiences of Kenyans will be a defining experience, and hopefully an opportunity for me to connect with them as well.”

McArdle, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame who is a student on the IU School of Medicine’s Indianapolis campus, has worked with people from underserved communities during a research experience in Bangladesh as well as a patient navigator at the IU Student Outreach Clinic. “I am committed to a career spent working to improve the health of the most vulnerable globally,” said McArdle. “I very strongly believe that the opportunity to work with AMPATH-one of the few truly special success stories in the oftentimes flawed and messy field of global health-would not only expose me to global oncology research but also show me how to forge meaningful, lasting, and mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues in Kenya. In short, I hope to learn how to do global health the right way.”

“As a young white man who had spent most of his life in rural Indiana, my experience in Bangladesh was, quite frankly, challenging,” he recalls. “I was by myself, traveling abroad for the first time, living in a city of 20 million people who spoke a different language, scrambling to piece together a new project after our original plan had crumbled due to forces beyond our control. However, that experience did not scare me away from the field of global health. I met some incredible people and forged some great and lasting friendships, and I hope to carry the lessons I learned—what I did well, and what I could have done better—into my time in Kenya.”

Over the past 30 years, more than 1,100 Indiana University medical trainees have visited the AMPATH partnership in Kenya and more than 400 Kenyan trainees have learned alongside their peers in North America. An educational endowment to fund exchange opportunities for Kenyan and IU medical students has been established to honor the years of service and global impact of Bob and Lea Anne Einterz.

Other unique global health opportunities at IU include a Global Health Residency Pathway available to medical residents in a variety of disciplines, quarterly Global Health Research Speaker Series and Global Health Scholars Day .

Students present research at spring Nutrition Fair

L iberty University’s Department of Public and Community Health, under the School of Health Sciences, held its second nutrition fair of the academic year April 25. The fair enabled students to research and present   projects on topics related to nutrition and the human body. 

The Montview Ballroom was packed out with tables, posters and students eager to share their findings and learn. 

Jelena Obretkovich, a graduate student studying human performance and nutrition, stood near the entrance of the fair to share her project about anorexia.

This was her second time participating in the fair, and she chose the topic of anorexia because of its prevalence. Her presentation aimed to educate students about the eating disorder and the effects it can have on someone as well as emphasize how God has made food and nutrients to be good for the body. 

“Each of us can be a light for whoever’s coming in,” Obretkovich said, explaining how a wide variety of people attend the event, even those from outside Liberty. “I always include some kind of personal faith statement.”

Senior Meghan Johns presented on common spices used in cooking and the health benefits they have. 

“Black pepper can help with allergies,” Johns explained, giving an overview of the way that the spice can help people with hay fever or even anaphylactic allergies. “You don’t have to have a lot of (spices) in your diet to see the health benefits.” 

Johns, a physical education major with a minor in public health, credits her love of spices to her upbringing and her recent trip to Grenada with Samaritan’s Purse. 

“Grenada is actually known as the island of spice,” Johns said. “These are all spices that they made on the island.” 

Johns had an array of spice samples on her table and encouraged others to use these spices as part of a regular diet because of their health benefits

Throughout the ballroom, students presented on topics such as skeletal health, caffeine, high fructose corn syrup, menstrual cycles, vitamins and minerals, coconut oil and much more.

Jake Dressel, a sophomore studying physical education, presented on the benefits of catching and eating fish locally rather than buying them from the store where they are often raised in fish farms. Dressel explained how locally caught fish have more vitamins and minerals and are often more tender to eat.
