If you received a bachelor’s degree upon completion of one of these undergraduate programs, you are eligible to apply to Wharton’s doctoral programs. Many candidates from three-year programs have a master’s degree as well, but it is not required.

Application Requirements for International Students

When applying, you need to carefully review the requirements for submitting all of your transcripts and student records. These include all post-secondary educational institutions you have attended, including technical and professional schools.

There is not a limit on the number of international students who will be accepted into the Doctoral Programs each year. Acceptance is based on academic history, test results, recommendations, and personal statement.

Language Proficiency

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required if you are an international applicant whose native language is not English. Please carefully review all the requirements for the exam explained in Standardized Test Scores .

International students who are accepted into the program and whose first language is not English may be required to take the SPEAK test offered through the English Language Programs office.

This test is used to determine/confirm a student’s fluency in English. If test results indicate a student would benefit from additional language instruction, arrangements will be made for summer class work and tutoring. Students will be expected to complete this additional work to ensure their proficiency in written and spoken English in professional settings.

Immigration and Taxes

In order to maintain legal student status in the United States, international PhD students must be enrolled for a full-time course load, which means a minimum of three courses per semester. Full-time enrollment does not include audits or incompletes. A PhD in USA takes approximately 5 – 6 years of full-time study and can cost between $12,000 – $45,000 per academic year. PhD programs in USA differ from that in the UK and Europe in that students must first take taught classes, coursework and exams before starting their research project.

Universities in the United States can be divided into two types: public universities and private universities.

Public universities are financed by the state in which they are based. Because of this, public universities charge less for students from within the state and more for students from outside the state, including international students.

Private universities are not financed by their state, but by private donors, research funds and tuition fees. For this reason, private universities generally charge higher tuition fees than public universities and require all students to pay the same amount, regardless of whether they come from out-of-state or abroad.

Method of Study

The main difference between a PhD in the US and a PhD in Europe lies in the program structure. Whereas a European PhD essentially consists of a single phase lasting three to four years , an American PhD consists of three different phases, each with its own time frame.

Phase One – The first phase lasts approximately two years and focuses on building a basic foundation for the doctoral student. This phase consists largely of taught components such as lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions, in which the student learns more about theoretical concepts and research methods within their discipline.
Phase Two – The second phase can be considered an assessment phase, which runs both periodically alongside and at the end of the first phase. Here, students complete coursework and take exams on the basis of the material they have covered of which they must pass in order to proceed to the third phase.
Phase Three – The third phase lasts approximately three years and resembles the European PhD structure. During this period, the student undertakes an independent research project, including forming a research design, conducting experiments, writing a thesis (more commonly referred to in the USA as a dissertation) and sitting a viva exam.

Teaching Requirements

Besides structure, a key difference between a PhD program in the US and in Europe is the focus on teaching requirements. In the US, doctoral students are expected to lecture, lead tutorials, host laboratory sessions, mark coursework and provide office hours for undergraduate students. Although students studying in European will likely contribute to these at some point during their study, this would normally be on a voluntary basis and involve less time commitment.

Research Flexibility

Another difference is project flexibility. In Europe, students typically apply to a PhD project predetermined by a supervisor, and although there may be some scope to adapt the project, depending on the funding provider , it will usually be limited to how the project is carried out rather than what it is about. In the US, however, a student applies to become a doctoral candidate within a department rather than applying for a particular research project. This is because students are expected to decide on their thesis topic (also commonly referred to as a dissertation research topic) near the end of their first phase after they have developed a better understanding of their subject and know where their interests lie. Therefore, research students in the US generally have more flexibility and influence in the direction of their research than students in the United Kingdom or Europe.

PhD Admission Requirements in USA

PhD admission into US universities can be highly competitive, both because of the limited number of positions and the large number of annual applicants.

The eligibility requirements for a doctoral program in the USA can generally be divided into four sections:

Grade Point Average ( GPA ) – in the US, a scoring system known as Grade Point Average is used to measure academic ability. A student’s GPA is calculated as a weighted score of the subjects they study during their undergraduate degree; an equivalent score is calculated by universities for international applicants. Although universities rarely set minimum GPA requirements for doctoral study, it’s worth being aware that a GPA of 3.0 is equivalent to a UK second class honours (2:1); the typical entry requirement for UK universities.
Graduate Records Exam (GRE) – most universities will require you to take a series of examinations known as Graduate Records Exams, which are used to determine your suitability for graduate study. GREs will assess your analytical, reasoning and critical thinking skills as well as your depth of your subject.
Student aptitude – in addition to academic ability, US universities also look for characteristics of a strong researcher. These include traits such as engaging in the subject in your own time, e.g. by attending talks and conferences, demonstrating a high degree of independence and enthusiasm, and a general passion for your subject.
English Language Proficiency – international students whose first language is not English must sit language exams such as IELTS or TOELF to demonstrate their English language proficiency.

International students will also require a F1 student visa in order to study in the US, however, you would typically apply for this after you have secured a place into a doctorate program.

How to Apply for PhD in USA

When applying for a PhD position at a graduate school, the application process will differ between universities, however, they will all typically ask for the following:

Academic CV – a short document summarising your educational background and current level of experience .
Personal statement – a document which outlines why you believe you are suitable for PhD study and your passion for the subject.
Academic transcripts – a complete breakdown of the modules and their respective marks you have taken as part of your previous/current degree.
GRE scores – a transcript of your Graduate Records Exam results.
Research statement – a condensed version of a research proposal outlining your general research interests, if required.
Recommendation letters – references from several academic referees who endorse your qualities as a person, your abilities as a student and your potential as a doctoral researcher.

Application Deadlines and Fees

Since PhD programs in the United States have taught components, they commence at the same time as all other taught degrees, and therefore share the same application deadlines and start dates. This corresponds to an application period that typically begins in August and ends in February. Admission decisions are typically made in April, with successful students starting in August/September.

When you apply to a graduate school, you will be expected to pay a fee for each doctorate application to cover the school’s administrative costs for processing your application. The fee varies from university to university, but typically ranges from $50 to $100 .

Funding your PhD in USA

It’s very common for a PhD student to receive financial aid in the form of a PhD scholarship; in fact, this will be the case for the vast majority of students in the US.

PhD funding can be ‘fully funded’ covering the student’s graduate program tuition fees, accommodation and living costs, or ‘partially funded’ covering the student’s tuition fee only in part or full.

Besides funding, a graduate student can take on an assistantship, such as a graduate teaching assistant or research assistant, in which they take on a part-time salaried position at the university alongside their studies.

Due to the international and collaborate nature of American universities, there are also a number of international scholarships available, such as the Fulbright Scholarship and the AAUW International Fellowship .

An international applicant is anyone who is not a US citizen or permanent resident of the United States at the time of application to the Chicago Booth School of Business. Here’s what you need to know about our requirements for international applicants seeking admission into the Stevens Doctoral Program.

When to Apply

The application for Fall 2025 will open in September. For more information about applying, see Application Process . Applicants to Stevens Doctoral Program, regardless of citizenship, must either meet one of our waiver criteria (below) or submit proof of English language proficiency. Only the TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic tests are accepted as proof of proficiency. Please find more information related to fluency determination here.

Academic Requirements

To be considered for admission, you must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (or expect to receive one by the time you enter the program).

Chicago Booth reserves the right to review the academic records of all international applicants to determine whether their academic credentials from a non-US institution are comparable to a US bachelor’s degree.

Applicants holding only professional diplomas or higher certificates or members of professional associations such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants are not qualified to apply for admission unless they also hold recognized university degrees.

Academic Records

You must submit academic records (transcripts or mark sheets) with grading scales for each year of college or university education completed or in progress, as well as copies of degrees awarded. Records must provide information on the content and quality of your performance, courses taken each year, and grades received. Class rank should be noted whenever possible.

You must submit both original language records and official English translations . All translations must be literal and complete versions of the original records, and must be prepared or verified by someone whose position requires a knowledge of both English and the original language. All supporting materials must also be in English.

Please upload all required academic records to the online application system. If you are admitted, you will be required to submit official academic records and official copies of degrees awarded (and official English translations where applicable). Photocopies and facsimiles of the documents are not acceptable.

Proof of English Proficiency

Applicants to Stevens Doctoral Program, regardless of citizenship, must either meet one of our waiver criteria (below) or submit proof of English language proficiency. Only the TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic tests are accepted as proof of proficiency.

Waiver Criteria

There are two ways to receive a waiver from the proof of proficiency requirement:

Primary Language Waiver: If English has been a primary language of communication and schooling for you since childhood, you may attest to this on the application. We cannot assist you in determining if this is the case for you. Falsifying this information, as with any other information on the application, may lead to revocation of an offer of admission.
Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Singapore, South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom, the United States.
Education in English-medium institutions in any countries or territories not listed here does not qualify for the exemption.
Only full-time coursework in a degree program at a college or university in one of these countries or territories qualifies. Remote study, lab or research work, non-degree programs, intensive English language courses, or high school/secondary school do not qualify. The qualifying academic year must be completed – i.e., if you are now in a program and are planning to have completed a year by the time you enroll, it will not meet the requirement.

Please do not email us regarding your qualifications for a waiver. If you meet the criteria, we will process the waiver after you have submitted your application.

Acceptable Test Scores

Acceptable Tests In order to meet the proof of proficiency requirement, students may submit either:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test (iBT), including tests taken online at-home, or in a testing center.
We do not accept any other proficiency tests, exams, equivalent coursework, certificate/certifications, endorsement from faculty, and/or other measurement other than the TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic. This includes the IELTS “Indicator” test and the TOEFL ITP Plus as well as Duolingo.
TOEFL or IELTS score reports are valid for two years; scores will be considered expired if the test was taken more than two years prior to the application deadline. If you send us a score and it expires prior to the deadline you are applying under, you will need to send a more recent score. For example, a score from a test taken prior to December 15, 2022 would no longer be valid for Fall 2025 admission.
Photocopies or PDFs of TOEFL or IELTS Score Reports will not be considered valid or accepted in lieu of an official score report from the agency. An offer admission cannot be made without an official score report on file.

TOEFL Internet-based (iBT): 100 overall score, no subsection requirements

IELTS Overall score of at least 7, with sub scores of at least 7 each

Please have your TOEFL scores sent directly from the testing agency to the Chicago Booth Stevens Doctoral Program. The TOEFL code for our program is 1819.

Student Visas

Visa eligibility forms are issued upon admittance to the program. Depending on your nationality and particular circumstances, you will receive either the I-20 or the DS-2019 form. These forms enable you to obtain an F-1 or a J-1 visa, respectively, when presented to a US consul. You will need to verify financial support before a visa eligibility form can be issued. A financial resource statement will be sent upon admittance.

Bachelor's degree or higher in pharmacy, biochemistry, chemistry, biology, engineering or other science
Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0
Two letters of recommendation from faculty knowledgeable of the student's ability and capability. Evaluators should comment on laboratory research, communication skills, creativity, and intangibles in the student's academic performance. An email request will be sent directly to your recommenders when you submit your application for formal review.
Personal statement: the personal statement is a general statement of purpose describing academic, professional, and research interests and should be no more than 500 words.
Demonstrated proficiency in organic and physical chemistry, biochemistry, biology and mathematics
Prior research experience and co-authorship in scientific publications are considered favorably.

SPPS receives approximately 300 applications for the PhD program and around 6% are accepted.

Application Requirements

In addition to your program application, as an international student you will need to provide the following materials as electronic uploads. Please do not send any mail, unless instructed to do so. You do not need to submit an evaluated transcript through WES however, we will accept it if you have it.

A photocopy of your passport page Upload a photocopy of your passport (photo page) to the proper section on your application checklist
Copy of current 1-20 and visa If you are currently studying in the United States, you must upload a copy of your current I-20 and Visa to your application checklist.
Official English Proficiency Scores In addition to meeting the standard academic criteria for the program to which you are applying, international applicants must also demonstrate English proficiency. Unless exempt, all international students must take one of the tests indicated here and meet the university minimum score requirement. Upon submission, please upload an unofficial copy of your English Language Proficiency test score to your application.
International Applicant Financial Form and Bank Documents - Not required for PhD applicants These documents can be submitted after students are accepted; feel free to leave it blank on the application checklist. You will be able to submit them later when prompted. Accepted students (except PhD) need to submit the Financial Form, along with bank documents showing funding for the first year of academic study (minus any scholarships you may be receiving).

Information for Current BS/MS or MS Students

Current students in our BS/MS or MS programs who are interested in the PhD program are required to submit a new application with new recommendations. MS students may apply either during their first or second year of the program. BS/MS students must complete their entire BS/MS program before joining the PhD program (some exceptions considered).

MS students who are accepted to the PhD program during their first year in the MS program are transferred directly to the PhD program and do not receive their MS degree. MS students who are accepted to the PhD program during their second year in the MS program are encouraged to complete their MS project and confer their MS degree before joining the PhD program.

It is recommended that students interested in the PhD program consider taking the required courses for the PhD program that are offered during their MS studies. If admitted to PhD program, students who have completed all of the required PhD courses will be allowed to take the Preliminary Exams.

Students accepted to the PhD program from our MS program who have elected not to receive their MS degree can apply all of their required PhD courses and graduate course credits towards the 72 credits needed for the PhD. These students should develop an academic plan carefully so that the remaining credit requirements needed for the PhD degree are met without exceeding the 72 credits by a large margin.

Students formerly in our BS/MS or MS programs who are accepted to the PhD and have received their BS/MS or MS degree can apply part or all of their prior graduate credits from the University at Buffalo towards the PhD. The Director of Graduate Studies will waive the required PhD courses taken during the BS/MS and MS program for these students. These students should work closely with the Director of Graduate Studies so that remaining credit requirements needed for the PhD degree are met without exceeding the 72 credits by a large margin.

Faculty Advisors

Our faculty experts and scholars are internationally recognized for their scholarship, experience, and quality of teaching. They are award-winning scholars, authors, diplomats, thinkers, and senior ranking officials who are authorities on international economics and international relations and who have expertise in contemporary issues around the world.

All PhD students have a tenured, faculty advisor. The advisor has primary responsibility for coordinating the candidate’s research agenda. Another senior member of the dissertation committee or “second reader” monitors the student’s research throughout the dissertation project. Both the faculty advisor and the second reader are to be substantively involved in the student’s preparation of the prospectus and the dissertation.

While the student will work actively with the first and second readers to prepare a dissertation prospectus, the student should also consult with the three supporting committee members throughout the doctoral research.

In order to earn the degree, students must fulfill all degree requirements and earn a cumulative GPA of 3.33 or above.

Each PhD student is required to do all of the following:

Complete a minimum of two consecutive semesters of registration as a full-time, resident graduate student, meaning that the student is present on-campus and working towards fulfilling the requirements for the degree.
Register as an active student each fall and spring semester from matriculation to degree completion.
Maintain a B+ average for all courses and receive no grade below B-.
Submit a preliminary schedule of coursework and comprehensive examinations upon entering the program.
Complete coursework in research methodology (details below).
Complete coursework relevant to his or her chosen fields of study.
Submit annual progress reports.
Pass two written comprehensive examinations within the first five semesters. See below for timeline details governing SAIS master’s alumni compared to those who previously studied elsewhere. Note: The American Foreign Policy comprehensive exam is oral.
Complete a high-quality research paper prior to the end of their second year in the program. The paper must be distinct from the dissertation, make an original scholarly contribution, and must be considered to have a strong potential of ultimately being publishable. The papers must be approved by the student’s advisor and a second faculty member that is outside of the student’s main field. (Details below.)
Demonstrate competence in two foreign languages, OR one language and Applied Econometrics. Note: Non-native English speakers can use English as a language for this requirement.
Write and defend a dissertation prospectus within three years that is approved by at least two readers (including the advisor).
Successfully defend the dissertation at an oral examination with a committee consisting of five examiners, a majority of whom determine it to be a significant contribution to knowledge and worthy of fulfilling the PhD.
Receive certification from the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs and the PhD Faculty Committee that all requirements have been fulfilled.
Receive dissertation-binding approval from the Homewood Library prior to the SAIS Faculty PhD Conferral Meeting.

Students who are not meeting any of the above requirements may be placed on academic probation and/or dismissed from the program.

Students receiving a SAIS stipend must work full-time on their PhD studies and may work no more than half time during the academic year.

Pre-dissertation status should last no more than two years for SAIS MAIRs and three years for non-SAIS MAs and is the time when students complete coursework, comprehensive exams, the second-year paper, and the dissertation prospectus, including the prospectus defense. Dissertation status usually begins in the third year for SAIS MAIRs and in the fourth year for others and is the time when a student completes the dissertation research, then writes and defends the dissertation. A student may advance to the dissertation stage earlier upon completion of all pre-dissertation requirements.

Pre-dissertation students must be present on-campus and working full-time toward fulfilling the requirements of the degree. To be registered full-time, a pre-dissertation student must engage in a full-time program of courses, seminars, and/or independent study approved by the faculty advisor, while remaining on track with the timeline for completing the degree.

Deadlines for Pre-Dissertation and Dissertation Students

Students entering the PhD Program with a SAIS Master’s degree are expected to complete their comprehensive examinations within three semesters, their prospectus within six months after that, and their dissertation defense within five years after completing the prospectus defense.

Students entering from other schools are expected to complete their comprehensive examinations within five semesters, their prospectus defense within six months of that, and their dissertation defense within five years after completing the prospectus defense.

The maximum time from matriculation to degree completion allowed by the Johns Hopkins University for the PhD is nine years. Students who exceed this limit are subject to dismissal from the program.

PRE-DISSERTATION, RESIDENT STAGE

Pre-dissertation status lasts up to two years for students who have completed the Master of Arts of International Relations (MAIR) degree at Johns Hopkins SAIS and up to three years for those without an MAIR degree from the school. Students complete coursework, comprehensive exams, and defend the dissertation prospectus.

Research Methodology

All incoming students must fulfill the following research methodology requirements within the first five semesters, totaling at least four courses. Auditing is not allowed—these courses must be taken for graded credit.

Theories and Methods of Qualitative Political Research (SA.100.410)
Research Design and Causal Inference (SA.100.408, Stats and Econometrics prerequisites)
Two additional methods courses in a social science discipline relevant to the student’s research agenda (e.g., political science, history, economics, sociology, anthropology, public health, etc.) in consultation with the faculty advisor.

Comprehensive Examinations

All students must select two examination areas from among the following:

Comparative Politics
International Economics
One of the SAIS Regional Studies Areas.

With the exception of American Foreign Policy (oral), all of the comprehensive examinations are fulfilled via written examinations. Students are not permitted to take both of their comprehensive examinations in regional studies area.

PhD students with a SAIS MAIR must take both comprehensive examinations by the end of the third semester in the PhD program, and those students with a master's degree from another university must take both comprehensives by the end of the fifth semester in the PhD program.

Within six months of passing the second comprehensive exam, students must prepare a written prospectus of the dissertation and present it in a formal defense that is open to members of the university faculty.

PhD Second-Year Paper Detailed Guidelines

Students must complete an original research paper prior to the end of their second year in the program. The deadline for this paper to be submitted is the final day of classes in the spring semester. The deadline for the two faculty graders to make a determination on whether the paper passes is the deadline for submitting spring-semester grades. A passing grade indicates that the paper makes an original scholarly contribution that has the strong potential to be published, even if additional refinement would be required prior to publication. Each paper is expected to develop an original argument and/or present novel evidence to support that argument.

Students must also submit an abstract to the two faculty graders by October 15, as well as a more detailed outline of their paper by the end of the fall semester. Students must submit a draft of at least part of the paper, and ideally a complete draft, by March 1 st . The lead advisor is expected to provide timely feedback, within a maximum of two weeks, on each of these interim assignments. The second reader is strongly encouraged to provide feedback on all of these assignments, and is required to provide comments on the March 1 st draft within two weeks. The feedback on these assignments is intended to ensure that students understand what is required for them to pass the 2 nd year paper requirement and to succeed in subsequently publishing their paper.

The purpose of these papers is to gain experience writing original research papers. Accordingly, the papers must be single-authored research papers. While the output from these papers might eventually be incorporated into coauthored projects in the future, the research underlying the paper and all writing must be completed by the student independently.

Each paper must be written as a stand-along piece of research, and should be modeled after a journal article within the student’s area of focus. There is no minimum or maximum word or page length; rather, the paper should follow the typical length of a journal article in their field. The second-year paper is not intended to be a brief preview of the student’s overall dissertation project, though it is possible that the second-year paper could turn into one of the chapters of a student’s dissertation.

Two members of the SAIS faculty will evaluate the final paper. Students must create this two-person committee before the end of the fall semester. A student’s main dissertation advisor will serve as one of the two graders. The second grader must be a full-time member of the SAIS faculty.

Students that do not receive a passing grade at the end of the second year will be placed on academic probation. If a student is unable to complete the 2 nd year requirement before the end of the fall semester of their third year they will be terminated from the program.

DISSERTATION, NON-RESIDENT STAGE

Students advance to the dissertation stage after completing all Pre-Dissertation Stage requirements, including successfully defending a prospectus. They are no longer required to be on campus, however, are still considered full-time status. Students should defend the dissertation within five years of the prospectus defense.

PhD Dissertation

At the time of application, students will propose a research topic they would like to pursue for their doctoral dissertation. During their course of study, students will hone this topic in consultation with a faculty advisor and defend a prospectus that outlines the dissertation’s research questions, mission, and methodology.

The PhD dissertation must be an original and analytical treatment of a subject of conceptual importance that involves the creation of new knowledge and not simply the master of existing knowledge. To conduct the research for, write, and defend the dissertation, a candidate will have a maximum of five years from the prospectus defense.

Termination of Doctoral Candidacy

Students who fail to meet the program requirements and deadlines (including registration and payment deadlines) detailed in this manual are subject to termination of their doctoral candidacy by the Faculty PhD Committee. Before considering this step, the Committee notifies the candidate and provides an opportunity for the student and his or her advisor to provide any further relevant information, which will be considered when making a final decision.

In cases where the PhD Committee has provided deadlines/extensions in writing, the failure of the student to meet those deadlines/extensions will result in a recommendation for dismissal.

Students whose candidacy is terminated are offered appropriate personal and career counseling.

However, if you want to get this funded PhD in the US, especially in the top-ranked universities, it is always a good idea to apply as early as possible before their deadlines. If you miss the scholarship deadline, you can still apply and be accepted for the PhD.

Here is a list of US PhD scholarships and stipends that will help you achieve your dream of studying in the US.

PhD Scholarship 1: University of Idaho

As one of the top 100 for the best value in the US, the University of Idaho is a great choice to do your PhD, thanks to the low cost of living and tuition fees. The College of Graduate Studies has several knowledgeable staff who can advise you on the wide array of financial aid resources as well.

You need to have a relevant master’s degree to be able to apply for this scholarship by Apr. 1, 2022. Besides the scholarship application, you have to submit a 500 to 1,000-word essay or a two to five-minute video that describes your aspirations to conduct projects, research or other opportunities to increase intercultural understanding.

PhD Scholarship 2: University of Colorado Boulder

As one of 36 US public research institutions in the Association of American Universities – an elite group of recognised research universities – the University of Colorado Boulder has many enviable rankings such as being the first university to have a STARS Gold for sustainability. Their warm student-centred campus community ensures you will not feel out of place.

The Incoming Graduate Student Fellowship – with a Feb. 11, 2022 deadline under the Centre for Humanities and the Arts – will cover up to 18 credits of tuition per semester, student fees, health insurance as well as a first-year stipend equivalent to a 50% Graduate Part-Time Instructor appointment. You must be enroled as a doctoral student and working in the humanities or arts.

PhD Scholarship 3: Vanderbilt University

Thanks to an innovative mix of immersive learning, integrated research and collaborative culture, Vanderbilt University is ranked the country’s #14 National University, and #1 for its education, nursing and audiology graduate programmes (US World and News Report 2021). Their location in Nashville, Tennessee allows students to enjoy a world-class city experience in a small college-feel town.

Qualified PhD applicants can apply for the University Graduate Fellowship by Jan. 15, 2022 in order to be nominated by their department. They will receive a stipend of up to US$5,000 for up to three years of their PhD studies.

PhD Scholarship 4 and 5: Washington University in St. Louis

Founded in 1853 in St. Louis, Missouri, Washington University in St. Louis attracts over 15,500 students from 100 countries and all 50 US states. They are well-known for being among the world’s leaders in teaching, research, patient care and service to society.

Below are two scholarships – both with a deadline of Jan. 25, 2022 – offered to students wanting to apply to the Graduate School, Washington University in St. Louis:

Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship

Graduate students with strong academic records, and a keen interest in diversity and service can apply for this Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship where they will receive academic, professional and personal support. You need to have a US undergraduate degree and have a desire to become a college or university professor.

Fellowship winners enjoy an annual stipend of US$36,720 (2021-22 rate), full tuition coverage, an educational allowance of US$1,500 and priority housing.

Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Fellowship for Women in Graduate Study

This Fellowship – co-sponsored by the University and the Monticello College Foundation – is especially created to encourage more women to take up graduate study, and serve society afterwards.

The successful recipients will receive an annual stipend worth US$36,720 and a US$600 travel award besides full tuition remission throughout their programme.

PhD Scholarship 6: University of Minnesota Twin Cities

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is well recognised as one of the most famous public research universities in the US. Over 50,000 students study at this university, which spans five campuses including the main Twin Cities campus.

The Diversity of Views and Experiences (DOVE) Fellowship Programme is available for exceptional research graduate students with diverse life and educational backgrounds who are underrepresented within graduate programmes.

They need to be nominated first by the Director of Graduate Studies in their respective graduate programme; they will get a stipend worth US$25,000, academic tuition for up to 14 graduate-rate credits per semester, health insurance subsidy and dental care.

PhD Scholarship 7: University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin – ranked as the top public university in Texas (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019) – has other high rankings including being #14 Public University (US News and World Report 2019). Their global world ranking is #67 (QS World University Rankings 2022) as well.

Through this Donald D. Harrington Graduate Fellows Programme Fellowship , recruited talented students are envisioned to share their knowledge and success with future generations. A stipend of US$40,000 for 12 months, tuition and required fees, an allowance for student medical insurance, and US$2,000 for miscellaneous expenses make up this generous funding package; the deadline is Jan. 24, 2022.

The following universities and institutions have not indicated any deadlines for their graduate fellowships, but you can contact them for further information.

PhD Scholarship 8: University of Oregon

As a Tier-One National Public Research University and being the top public university in Oregon (for first-year retention and graduation rates), the University of Oregon attracts over 22,000 students. It has nine schools and colleges.

The International Cultural Service Programme is an annual tuition waiver scholarship ranging from US$9,000 to US$35,000 for up to 15 credits per term. Winners are required to do cultural service in the form of presentations about their home country to children, community organisations and the university’s students and faculty.

PhD Scholarships 9 and 10: East-West Centre

The East-West Centre , established by the US Congress in 1960, is a nonprofit organisation acting as a US-based institution for public diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific region. Located adjacent to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), the centre’s Honolulu campus spans 21 acres.

Below are two Fellowships – established since 1999 through the Y. S. Lee Family Endowed Fellowship Fund and worth US$5,000 each – available for graduate students.

Wing-tsit Chan Graduate Fellowship in Chinese Philosophy

For students interested in Chinese philosophy, they can apply for this fellowship. They need to be nominated by the UHM Philosophy Department and selected by a committee that includes representatives from the East-West Centre’s Education Programme, the department’s Graduate Committee, and a member of the UH Center for Chinese Studies Executive Committee.

Ah Kin (Buck) Yee Graduate Fellowship in Chinese Studies

How to apply for a us student visa, tuition fees, living costs, post-graduation work in the us, meet us grad schools in a city near you.

The planet’s third-largest country by both area and population, the US is a world leader across pretty much every sphere of human activity – business, technology, science, politics, media, and of course education. The US is home to many of the world’s most prestigious universities (including half of the global top 10 ), and hosts more international students than any other country – around 1.1 million by the latest count.

Read on for information about studying in the US at graduate level – including how to apply, student visas, fees and funding, and staying to seek work.

To be eligible for graduate study in the US, you should have completed a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification from an internationally recognized institution. Along with your degree certificate, you will also typically need to provide:

One or more letters of recommendation;
A research proposal (for PhD and postdoctoral applicants);
A graduate admissions test result, if required (e.g. GRE / GMAT );
Proof of proficiency in English (e.g. TOEFL/IELTS) if you are not a native speaker;
A statement of purpose, outlining your aspirations and demonstrating your suitability for the course.

While some institutions accept applications on an ongoing basis, most colleges offer an early deadline (usually December to January) and a regular deadline (usually March to April). You can apply to as many US universities as you like, but many students select a shortlist of six. US universities often charge an application fee, usually between $50 and $100, though online applications can be cheaper or free.

International students will need to obtain an F-1 non-immigrant visa. You can only apply for this after securing a place at an SEVP-approved university, and you’ll need to provide proof of sufficient funds for the course duration and a confirmation of your intention to leave the US after completing your studies. You’ll be asked to attend an interview at your local US embassy, bringing your application and supporting documents with you.

If you’re a Canadian or Bermudian citizen you won’t need a visa to study in the US, but you will still need to obtain an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility form and pay for SEVIS (the student database and tracking system) registration. The non-immigrant visa application fee is currently $160 and the registration fee for SEVIS is $200.

Tuition fees at US universities are well known for being on the high side. Private universities tend to charge higher fees, and usually have a single rate for both local and international students. Public universities will have a lower rate for students from within their state, and a higher rate for international students and out-of-state residents. If you wish to undertake a professional degree such as an MBA, JD, LLM or MD, you should also expect to pay considerably more than for other postgraduate programs.

All US universities are legally required to include a fees and financial aid calculator on their websites. Use this to get a quick estimate of how much your intended course of study would cost, and what funding you may be eligible for. You can access all net price calculators in one place here .

The good news is that many students are able to benefit from some form of financial aid, and often the most competitive institutions offer the most generous support. For example, five major US universities are entirely “ need blind ”, pledging to offer sufficient financial assistance for all students (both domestic and international) who are selected for admission, regardless of their financial situation. These schools are Harvard , Amherst, Yale , Princeton and MIT .

As US government aid schemes and loans are often not available to international students, you’ll probably find your best sources of funding are those offered by your chosen university and/or other organizations. Scholarships and grants may be awarded based on financial need, academic achievements and/or other talents, and may also take into account factors relating to your background and field of study.

While the largest funding packages are often found at the top end of the private sector, many public universities offer alternative support. An example is the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) scheme, which allows students with F-1 visas to gain paid, off-campus internships. Another funding option is the Fulbright Program , an initiative led by the US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Depending on where you decide to study in the US, the cost of living can vary considerably. Believe it or not, living costs in the US can often be lower than those in other popular study destinations. Suburban and rural areas in the South and Midwest generally have the lowest cost of living, with big urban centers like New York City entailing considerably higher living expenses ( New York University gives an average annual estimate of $24,000). To supplement your income, you may like to seek part-time work on campus . However, work off-campus in your first year is restricted by visa regulations.

After graduation, F-1 visa holders are generally entitled to stay in the country for up to one year of post-graduation practical training. In order to do this you’ll need to apply for a change in visa status within 60 days after graduation, or risk being deported. There are two types of practical training, known as optional (OPT) and curricular (CPT). Both can be completed either during your degree or after graduation, but must not exceed 12 months and must be in a role directly related to your field of study. Some STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students may also be eligible to extend their practical training period by an additional 24 months.

International students need to prepare some additional admissions materials along with the rest of their applications:

TOEFL : Required if you have not graduated from a college or university in which all instruction is conducted in English. Please send scores to school code 9828. Your official score report must be received by the application deadline.
Transcript Evaluation : International transcripts must be evaluated by the World Education Services (WES) . Evaluations should include a course-by-course analysis indicating the type of degree received, the U.S. equivalency of the degree, the graduation date, and a cumulative grade point average. Please be sure to upload all evaluations to your online application. The transcript evaluation must be received by the application deadline, as original transcripts from your international university cannot be used in place of the transcript evaluation.
Nursing Credential Evaluation : If you have a nursing credential from outside the United States, you will need to have your credentials evaluated. Please visit CGFNS International, Inc. to obtain an evaluation.

Financial Aid

Beginning in Fall 2021, Columbia Nursing will fund international PhD students. Funding includes tuition and fees, Student Health Services health insurance, and a stipend. International applicants are encouraged to visit the Columbia University International Students & Scholars Office for information about housing, Visas, and other topics.

Student housing is not guaranteed to any Columbia Nursing student and is lottery-based. However, first priority is given to international students. International students interested in on-campus housing should complete a housing application by the deadlines posted on the On-Campus Housing website.

Applying to a PhD degree in the USA can be quite an extensive and competitive process. Universities want to make sure students end up on the right graduate programmes and therefore put a lot of time and effort into their admissions process. They expect you to do the same with your application.

This doesn't mean that it's harder to get a place on a US PhD degree. But you will need to provide more material and more detail about your existing qualifications than you might be asked for elsewhere.

How should I apply for a PhD in the USA?

Applications for US PhD programmes are made directly to graduate schools. But bear in mind that US graduate schools will often ask for a lot of supplementary material with your application. Most will also charge an admission fee (usually between $50 and $100 ).

Do I need a Masters to apply for a PhD in the USA?

You won’t necessarily need a Masters to apply for a PhD in the USA. American graduate programmes effectively combine Masters and PhD study. Some students actually receive a Masters at the end of their coursework stage.

The Interdisciplinary Ph.D. (IPhD) program allows well-qualified graduate students the opportunity to pursue study in multidisciplinary areas of inquiry where expert faculty are available to guide doctoral research.

For such a program to be feasible, there must be at least one member of the Graduate Faculty who is a specialist in the area of the student’s interest, and three additional Graduate Faculty members (in at least two departments) who are prepared to supervise the proposed research. The fifth member of the committee is usually an outside scholar. The chairperson and the majority of advisory committee members must have experience in supervision and direction of doctoral students and have a strong record of research and scholarly activity. Students will not be able to gain admission to the IPhD program unless they can demonstrate evidence of an interdisciplinary research focus and a suitable dissertation advisory committee to the IPhD policy and admissions committee.

General Eligibility and Admission Criteria

A master’s degree (or equivalent) in a discipline related to the proposed area of study.
Submission of a detailed program of study and a prospectus discussing the proposed research focus. The student’s program of study must identify and be endorsed by the UM Graduate Faculty who have agreed to supervise the coursework and the dissertation.
All other materials required by the Graduate School for students applying to doctoral programs.

While this program may be individually planned, it is not a program that is conducted independently of the UM campus, nor by distance education. The majority of coursework is taken through the University of Maine, and except for the admission procedures, the policies and regulations governing the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. are the same as those for other Ph.D. programs.

Graduate assistantships for this program are usually limited to advisors’ current grants or to competitive selection for a Graduate School assistantship or fellowship, see Financial Information section of this catalog. In some instances, departments have funded teaching assistantships for Interdisciplinary Ph.D. students.

Before submitting the application, arrangements must be made to meet with a representative of the Graduate School office to explore academic and professional goals and to assess the University’s capabilities to offer graduate coursework in the student’s proposed area. The IPhD admission guidelines, https://umaine.edu/graduate/resource/interdisciplinary-phd-guidelines/ will also be reviewed at this meeting.

Application materials include a description of the applicant’s goals and objectives, program of study, research prospectus, vitae of the proposed advisory committee, and supporting academic credentials (e.g. transcripts, letters of recommendation). Application deadlines are November 1 for spring admission and April 1 for summer or fall admission.

Some interdisciplinary faculty groups at the University of Maine have established formal concentrations within the Interdisciplinary program. Those are noted elsewhere in this catalog. In these interdisciplinary concentrations, applications are reviewed by the program admissions committees after receipt by the Graduate School.

Ph.D. students are required to take a minimum of 90 credits beyond the bachelor’s degree, some of which may be satisfied by prior study in a master’s program. In addition to the core and elective courses, this program includes 12 to 15 credits in research methods, an internship, and 12 credits of dissertation research. Average completion is five years if enrolled full time.

Applying to EKU Grad School

Below are resources for domestic students to help you determine admission requirements, application processes and admittance deadlines for your chosen program; however, you are encouraged to contact your enrollment advisor to learn of any specific requirements for your program. Additionally, prior to applying you should review the application deadlines to determine your start date. If you are an international student, please review the international student information for relevant application information.

How to Apply

How to apply to a graduate program:

Fill out the free online application.
Provide official entrance exam scores (GRE, MAT or GMAT), if applicable.
Provide official undergraduate transcripts (if not an EKU graduate).
Submit letters of recommendation, if required for the academic program.

Some programs may have additional application requirements. Contact your enrollment advisor to learn of any specific requirements for your program.

Online Application – No application fee!
Official Entrance Examination Scores – Only official scores sent directly from the testing agency may be used to satisfy admission requirements.
Official Course by Course Transcript Evaluation – Applicants must have a degree equivalent to the four year baccalaureate degree awarded by U.S. universities. Foreign credential evaluations must be submitted by a NACES member. Click here to find a NACES member for your evaluation . * Credential evaluations must include a record of all degrees earned, detailing all subjects taken, grades obtained and GPA. Uncertified copies are not accepted. To expedite EKU’s receipt of your evaluation, you may opt to utilize SpanTran , a NACES approved transcript evaluator.
Declaration of Finances – All financial documentation is only good for six months after the received date. It is suggested that you do not turn in declaration of finance documents until three months prior to the term in which you are applying as they may otherwise expire. Applicants should have available the approximate sum of $32,008 for each academic year. *Amounts are subject to change to accommodate cost of attendance. Although an offer of admission can be extended prior to submission of a declaration of finances, EKU cannot issue the I-20 necessary for an F1 visa before receiving a valid declaration of finances.

IELTS scores of 6.5 overall with 5 or above in EVERY subject/skill category

ELS Center – English Language Study

International students who would like to study English in the U.S. prior to attending EKU to meet our English Proficiency standard may apply to study English at an ELS center. They can apply to EKU through the ELS program and if they meet all of the admissions standards with the exception of English Proficiency, they will be offered a Conditional Letter of Admission (CLA).

**International applicants are only exempt from TOEFL or IELTS if they have a degree from an accredited institution from the states.

Note: Students seeking an Aviation – Professional Flight degree are required to demonstrate FAA Aviation English Language Standard (AELS) Proficiency Rating Scale at the Operational Level 4. Students are required to attain this standard before acceptance of a student pilot application or issuance of a student solo endorsement. Additional details are available in FAA AC 60-28B.

Important Notice: The Clery Act Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is available on the website of the EKU Police Department. This report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings, or property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the Richmond, Corbin, Danville, Lancaster, Manchester, and Somerset campuses. It contains policies on crime reporting, alcohol/drug use, crime prevention and other matters. The report also provides information regarding fire safety and statistics. You can view this report at police.eku.edu . A paper copy is available by contacting the EKU Police at (859) 622-1111.

The department also maintains a daily log of campus crimes and fires that are reported to campus and local police. The log can be viewed at crimelog.eku.

International Students

International applicants are encouraged to apply early to all programs due to time constraints of issuing the I-20. Admission applications could be automatically deferred to the following term if the application is received late in the semester. All official documents are required before sending to the department for an admission decision (two week time frame depending on program deadline).

Admission Requirements

Applicants meeting the minimum requirements for general admission to the Graduate School and any additional requirements for their selected graduate degree program are eligible for clear admission.

Minimum requirements for admission to EKU’s Graduate School:

Application for graduate admission
Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
Overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.5

Some degree programs may have additional or higher criteria for clear admission including a personal statement, writing samples or one of the following additional placement tests:

GRE: “Graduate Records Examination”. It includes three sections; Verbal Reasoning (V); Quantitative Reasoning (Q); and Analytical Writing (AW). For more information about the test, please visit the GRE website .
GMAT: “Graduate Management Admission Test”. It consists of four sections; Verbal, Quantitative, Analytical Writing Assessment, and Integrated Reasoning. For more information, please visit the GMAT website.

A department may waive the stipulated GPA requirements for clear admission for applicants having already earned a graduate degree from an accredited institution.

How do i check my application status.

To check the status of your application, login to your applicant status portal by visiting the Admissions Office site . Once logged in, select Checklist. This portal contains your itemized application checklist.

How much is the application fee?

To ease the financial burdens of our prospective students and facilitate the graduate application process, EKU is waiving the application fee – no strings attached! What are you waiting for? Apply today!

Which programs waive the GRE?

Some programs may waive the entrance exam requirement (GRE/GMAT/MAT) depending on your undergraduate GPA. Please refer to the graduate program s website to determine eligibility and target scores.

However, those desiring admission to an EKU Graduate Program with less than a 2.5 GPA undergraduate must take the GRE.

How long will it take to process my application?

The turnaround time for an admissions review is dependent upon both how quickly the applicant submits all required materials and how quickly the department completes the review. Please note: Certain times of the year, (i.e., holidays and summer breaks) may impact the processing time and result in a longer wait time.

As a general standard, the team anticipates approximately 3-5 days for the processing of an application (depending on the items noted above).

Do I need to fill out an application with both the Graduate School and the program to which I am applying?

The Graduate School application is required for all students seeking admission. Supplemental department applications do not result in admission to the Graduate School. It is very important to establish communication with both the Graduate School and the program for which you are pursuing admissions. Check with your department to see if there are any additional admission requirements besides the general EKU Graduate School application process.

How do I upload additional documents to my application after submission?

Login to your applicant status portal , go to Checklist. On the right, you will see the upload portal where you can upload additional supporting documents.

How do I update my letters of recommendation?

Login to your applicant status portal , select the ‘Checklist’ tab. At the bottom of your checklist, you will see the following statement:

“To re-send notification emails to your recommenders, re-visit the recommendations page, click ‘Edit’, and then click ‘Send Reminder’.”

Follow the link and it will direct you back to the Recommendation section to allow you to exclude a recommender, replace or edit a recommender, and/or resend a notification to your recommender.

International Fellowships

Funding: $20,000–$50,000 Opens: September 3 Deadline: November 15

International Fellowships have been in existence since 1917. The program provides support for women pursuing full-time graduate or postdoctoral study in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and who intend to return to their home country to pursue a professional career. A limited number of awards are available for study outside of the U.S. (excluding the applicant’s home country) to women who are members of Graduate Women International (see the list of GWI affiliates ). Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited U.S. institutions are supported.

Applicants must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree by the application deadline and must have applied to their proposed institutions of study by the time of the application. Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls.

Recipients return to their home countries to become leaders in business, government, academia, community activism, and the arts or scientific fields.

Award Amount

Master’s/first professional degree: $20,000 Doctoral: $25,000 Postdoctoral: $50,000

November 15, 2024, by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time Deadline for online submission of application, recommendations, and supporting documents.

April 15, 2025 Notification of decisions emailed to all applicants. AAUW is not able to honor requests for earlier notification.

July 1, 2025–June 30, 2026 Fellowship year

When a date falls on a weekend or holiday, the date will be observed on the following business day.

Eligibility

International Fellowships are not open to previous recipients of any AAUW national fellowship or grant (not including branch or local awards or Community Action Grants).
Members of the AAUW board of directors, committees, panels, task forces and staff, including current interns, are not eligible to apply for AAUW’s fellowships and grants. A person holding a current award is eligible for election or appointment to boards, committees, panels and task forces.
International Fellowships are open to women, including people who identify as women, in all fields of study at an accredited institution of higher education or, for postdoctoral fellows, research. AAUW will make final decisions about what constitutes eligible institutions.
Unsuccessful applicants may reapply.
Have citizenship in a country other than the U.S. or possession of a nonimmigrant visa if residing in the U.S. Women who are currently, or expect to be during the fellowship year, a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or dual citizen with the U.S. and another country are not eligible.
Hold an academic degree (earned in the U.S. or abroad) equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree completed by the application deadline .
Intend to devote themselves full-time to the proposed academic plan during the fellowship year.
Intend to return to their home country to pursue a professional career upon completion of their studies.
Be proficient in English and confirm proficiency by submitting one of the Required Components (see below), which include certain English proficiency exams, transcripts from English-speaking institutions, or a written statement verifying English is the applicant’s native language. Applicants planning to take one of the accepted English proficiency exams should plan for and take the test as early as possible. Please direct questions about the tests to the test provider.
Master’s/first professional degree and doctoral applicants must have applied by the AAUW application deadline, to an accredited institution of study for the period of the fellowship year and must indicate the name of the institution in the International Fellowship application. While acceptance is not required at the time of application, fellows must provide official confirmation from the institution with their award acceptance materials.
Master’s/first professional degree fellowships are intended for master’s or professional degree-level programs such as J.D., M.F.A., L.L.M., M.Arch., or medical degrees such as M.D., D.D.S., etc. Certificates, associate degrees, and undergraduate degrees are ineligible.
Doctoral fellowships are intended for doctorate degrees classified as research degrees, such as Ph.D. or Ed.D.
Postdoctoral applicants must provide proof of their doctorate degree; hold a doctorate classified as a research degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D ., D.B.A., D.M .) or an M.F.A. by the application deadline ; and indicate where they will conduct their research.
Master’s/first professional degree and doctoral applicants must be enrolled in a U.S.-accredited institution located in the U.S. during the fellowship year.
A limited number of awards are available to Graduate Women International members for study or research in any country other than their own. Note that foreign branches of U.S. institutions are considered outside of the U.S.
Applicants can apply for the fellowship for any year of their program but must be conducting a full year of study or research. International Fellowships do not provide funding for a partial year of study or research. Programs ending prior to April of the fellowship year are not eligible.
Distance learning/online programs: Master’s/first professional degree and doctoral fellowships support traditional classroom-based courses of study at colleges or universities. This fellowship program does not provide funding for distance-learning or online programs or for degrees heavily dependent on distance-learning components. Final decisions about what constitutes distance learning under these fellowships will be made by AAUW. AAUW will accept applications from applicants who are temporarily studying remotely due to COVID-19 precautions at their institution.

Criteria for Selection and Application Review

The panel meets once a year to review applications for funding. Awards are based on the criteria outlined here. Recommendations by the panel are subject to final approval by AAUW. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis according to funds available in a given fiscal year.

To ensure a fair review process, AAUW does not comment on the deliberations of its award panels. AAUW does not provide evaluations of applications. No provisions exist for the reconsideration of fellowship proposals. Applications and supporting documents become the sole property of AAUW and will neither be returned nor held for another year.

Applicants residing in their home country at the time of application, from developing/emerging countries, or from an underrepresented group in any region, will receive special consideration.
Position on return to home country.
Academic and/or professional qualifications.
Demonstrated commitment to the advancement of women and girls in home country.
Proposed time schedule.
Quality and feasibility of proposed plan of study or research.
Demonstrated evidence of prior community and/or civic service in home country.
Applicant’s country’s need for specialized knowledge or skill.
Financial need.
Motivation for graduate study or research.

Regulations

International Fellowship funds are available for:

Educational expenses.
Living expenses. Dependent child care.
Travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars that do not exceed 10% of the fellowship total.

International Fellowship funds are not available for:

Purchase of equipment.
Indirect costs.
Research assistants.
Previous expenditures, deficits, or repayment of loans.
Publication costs.
Institutional (overhead) costs.
Tuition for dependent’s education.
Grants-in-aid for less than a full academic year or travel grants.
Travel to or from a fellow’s home country.
Travel to or from the fellow’s research location, if abroad (does not apply to fellows who are GWI members with AAUW approval to study or research in a country other than their own).

AAUW regards the acceptance of a fellowship as a contract requiring the fulfillment of the following terms:

All International Fellowship recipients are required to sign a contract as an acceptance of the award. Retain these instructions as they will become part of the fellowship contract if the applicant is awarded a fellowship.
An International Fellow is expected to pursue their project full-time during the fellowship year (July 1–June 30). No partial fellowships are awarded. Fellowships may not be deferred.
Any changes in plans for the fellowship year must have the prior written approval of AAUW. AAUW must be notified promptly of any change in the status of an application resulting from the acceptance of another award.
Fellows may spend up to two months traveling abroad for research related to their project plan with prior written approval of AAUW.
Postdoctoral fellows cannot pursue a degree during the fellowship year.
Up to five International Master’s/First Professional Degree Fellowships are renewable for a second year. Fellows will receive application information for this competitive program during their fellowship year.
Stipends are made payable to fellows, not to institutions.
With some exceptions based on relevant tax statuses and treaties, the fellowship stipend is subject to a 14 or 30 percent tax. AAUW will withhold these funds for payment to the Internal Revenue Service.
The determination of whether there is a tax obligation associated with the receipt of an AAUW award is the sole responsibility of the applicant. Specific questions regarding income tax matters should be addressed with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, the applicant’s financial aid office or a personal tax adviser. AAUW cannot provide tax advice. AAUW is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charity founded for educational purposes.
Responsibility for securing visas and other documents , and following policies associated with visas, rests solely with the fellow.

Required Components*

Provide two recommendations from professors or professional colleagues well acquainted with the applicant, their work, and their academic background, in striving towards scholarly pursuits. When possible, recommenders should be professors or professional colleagues in the applicant’s home country who can speak about the applicant’s qualifications and about the country’s need for the specialized skill or knowledge they plan to acquire with their proposed study or research. AAUW does not accept references from dossier services, such as Parment or Interfolio.
Transcripts** must include a list of courses taken and grades received.
If the institution does not provide a transcript or a list of courses taken and grades received or the degree did not require coursework, an official letter from the institution where the degree was received that includes the degree completion date must be uploaded.
Do not upload copies of additional certificates or other documents the applicant may have received during their education.

Many transcripts do not include current coursework. If fall 2023 semester grades are not available and are not on your transcript, a list of courses taken that semester must be provided by the institution’s Office of the Registrar.

Meet a Recent International Fellow

Alexandra Semma Tamayo has worked as a forensic anthropologist at the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Villavicencio, Colombia. Her multidisciplinary approach to the identification of missing persons from enforced disappearance has helped bring justice to the families in armed conflict contexts. As an international fellow, her research in fracture patterns observed in gunshot wounds will be extremely helpful in improving the accuracy in trauma interpretation when working with human-rights violations.

Meet Our Alumnae

Tererai Trent

2001–02 International Fellow and scholar, motivational speaker and humanitarian. She founded Tererai Trent International, whose mission is to provide quality education in rural Africa. Oprah Winfrey named Trent as her all-time favorite guest. In 2017, Trent received the AAUW Alumnae Recognition Award.

Mahnaz Rezaie

2014–16 International Fellow and photojournalist, filmmaker and writer who advocates for the rights of Afghan women. She was honored at the 2014 Women in the World Summit for her short film exploring how wearing a hijab in the U.S. affected her relationships.

Sofia Espinoza Sanchez

2013–14 International Fellow and Peruvian molecular biochemist researching cancer and neurological disorders. She also co-directs the Research Experience for Peruvian Undergraduates program.

MHR Student Morgan Coleman: Why I Chose the Humphrey School

Morgan Coleman is clear about her career goals. She wants to become a U.S. Foreign Service officer who takes a human rights approach to every interaction.

Although still a student, she is already well on her way to achieving the career she envisions.

Coleman is studying human rights at the University of Minnesota. She’s just begun her second year in the Master of Human Rights program, which is jointly offered by the Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the College of Liberal Arts (CLA).

Coleman received a fellowship from the Charles B Rangel International Affairs Program , which is designed to prepare students for Foreign Service careers, to support her graduate education. Among the many grad schools she considered, Coleman said she knew quickly that the University of Minnesota’s program offered her exactly what she was looking for.

Unique program

The U of M’s unique human rights program combines the Humphrey School’s expertise in global policy, leadership, social policy, and policy analysis with the research and teaching expertise in CLA’s Human Rights Program .

"I wanted to be able to fully invest in a human rights education," Coleman said. "The conversations with Humphrey School staff and faculty before coming here—frankly, there was no competition. They were genuinely interested in what I wanted to do."

Coming from a small private college, "I knew the value of building good relationships, and I wanted the same thing in grad school."

As a Rangel Fellow, Coleman already interned with the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee before coming to campus. She spent this past summer as an intern at the U.S. embassy in Quito, Ecuador.

The MHR curriculum includes practical skills such as memorandum writing, to summarize a situation and the legal implications arising from it. It includes a grounding in traditional diplomatic skills. But its strength is its interdisciplinary approach to human rights.

For example, Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives in Human Rights is a required course that brings together graduate students from different majors to discuss history, the arts, law, and social sciences, and their implications for human rights. Coleman sees the mix of students in some classes as a benefit; it’s the start of a network of professionals in development, public policy, and planners that will be valuable throughout her career.

Hands-on training in diplomacy

Coleman participated in the International Strategic Crisis Negotiation Exercise (ISCNE), a role-playing exercise developed by the U.S. Army War College that’s hosted annually at the Humphrey School. During the two-day exercise, participants form teams to address an international crisis scenario.

Each team represents a group, such as a country or non-state actor, which is involved in the crisis. Humphrey School students are joined on their teams by subject matter experts, including experienced diplomats and University of Minnesota faculty.

Coleman’s team represented a territory that is not recognized by the United States, which meant wrestling with complicated diplomatic questions.

"When statehood inherently makes you more effective, how does that work? We leveraged our relationships with other state actors to move conversations ahead. It was intense and it happened very fast."

Coleman said the exercise was an “amazing” experience. "It was so impactful and educational. … It's like debate and Model UN combined, but MORE."

Prioritizing human rights

Both her fellow students and faculty members bring their energy and experience to campus, Coleman said, and mentioned her academic advisor, Professor Eric Schwartz as a great resource. Schwartz served in a number of high-profile foreign policy positions, including assistant secretary of state, United Nations special envoy, and a National Security Council director; so Coleman consulted with him before choosing which countries to bid for in her Foreign Service internship.

Coleman has formed friendships with others in her MHR cohort. She studies and socializes mostly with a few fellow "human rights nerds." She joked that "we are extremely fun at parties because we constantly talk about things like global conflict."

Joking aside, Coleman says the MHR is the perfect program for her to immerse herself in the knowledge she will need to be an effective advocate for human rights around the world.

"The human rights perspective in foreign policy is sometimes an afterthought," she said. "But as an incoming Foreign Service officer, I will have human rights in the front of my mind all the time. In the MHR, I'm looking at where the intersections exist between U.S. foreign policy and human rights. But I'm also getting the hard skills I will need."
