The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in International Development Studies (GRID) is one of the first in Southeast Asia to offer multidisciplinary training in international development.  The curriculum integrates academic, technical, managerial, and professional training in the social sciences. The GRID program offers excellent preparation for a career in public or private sector development. The core and elective courses, taught in English, address a wide range of topics, including development theory and practice; globalization; research methods; politics of public policy; migration; human rights; environmental politics; conflict resolution; project management; and innovation for inclusive development. The thesis project allows each student to pursue their personal interests. See “course description” page for more details .

Bangkok: A Hub for International Development in the Heart of Southeast Asia

The GRID Program, situated in Thailand, is geographically central within ASEAN and Asia and leverages access to local, regional, and global organizations based in Bangkok and beyond.

Chulalongkorn University is located in the center of Bangkok, close to the regional seat of numerous United Nations agencies, among them the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). International organizations such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) and prominent civil society organizations such as Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (Forum-Asia), which also have offices nearby. Development practitioners from these organizations regularly come to Chulalongkorn to share their knowledge and experience with students. These contacts are crucial for students wishing to work in the region after their studies. These organizations also provide a wealth of resources for the students’ research projects, and possible internship and work opportunities.  Chulalongkorn University is easily accessible by public transport. Most of our students live in comfortable and private apartments only 15 – 20 minutes from campus.

Top-Notch Faculty with Extensive Network in National and International Policy-Making and Development Arena

Chulalongkorn Faculty members are experienced public intellectuals with strong connections at all levels of Thai society, including Southeast Asia and beyond. Students benefit from the unique inside knowledge of active players in local and regional politics, and policy-making circles. Many professors sit as committee members on national bodies in Thailand such as the National Economic and Social Advisory Board, the National Human Rights Commission, and National Security Council, and on the boards of civil society organizations. Chulalongkorn academics pursue a wide range of research interests, and are able to provide expert advice to each student. See the academic staff page for further information.

The faculty is supported by a number of prominent guest lecturers, from Thailand and overseas academic institutions, United Nations agencies, government, and civil society organizations. The M.A. program is a unique opportunity to develop a network of contacts among leading development scholars and practitioners in the region.

The program and Chulalongkorn also work in partnership with many academic and international institutions, such as Chiang Mai and Mahidol Universities; the Thailand Research Fund; the Office of the Civil Service Commission; the Union for Civil Liberty; University of Vienna, Austria; University of Bonn, Germany; Charles University of Prague, Czech Republic; Waseda University, Japan; Third World Studies Centre, University of the Philippines; and the UN Commission on Human Security.

Visit the guest lecturers page for a listing and profile of current and past contributors, and the Network page for information on some of the program’s institutional partners.

Personalized Student Support and Abundant Academic and Financial Resources

The Ph.D. program admits around 5 to 10 students each year and is thus able to offer personalized support to each of them. From the day of admission throughout the post-graduation period, the staff facilitates the students’ experience at the university and in Bangkok. Staff members support students in matters such as obtaining and renewing student visas, finding a place to stay on or off campus, and facilitating connections with Thai government agencies and civil society organizations for research purposes.

Chulalongkorn has modern and fully-equipped libraries and resource centers to support learning and exchange. Some of the research and multidisciplinary institutes include the Energy Research Institute, the Center for Ecological Economics, the Environmental Research Institute, the Social Research Institute, and the Asian Migration Resource Center. Students can also access the resources of other Thai universities and institutions in Bangkok.

Diverse Student Body in an Intimate Class Environment

All M.A. and Ph.D. courses are taught using a seminar format to provide a forum for dialogue and discussion. The M.A. and Ph.D. students, coming from a wide range of countries and backgrounds, have a unique opportunity to share their experience and discover new cultural perspectives. Since its inception, the program has hosted students from Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Canada, Cambodia, China (and Taiwan), Costa Rica, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Korea (Republic of), Lao PDR, Moldova, Myanmar, Nepal, Palestinian State, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Vietnam. Most students have had previous work or volunteer experience in international development, and some even hold graduate degrees. The student population is, on average, 58% female and 42% male while the mean age is 31.

5 Best Universities for a PhD in Thailand

Sascha Funk

If you’re based in Thailand and think about furthering your academic career you might end up considering a PhD at some point. There are several reasons why one could think about doing a PhD abroad first (it’s really expensive here for example) but there are some pros for doing it right here as well (a: you are already here so getting supervision is easier). So if you consider doing your PhD in the land of smiles, here are the five best Universities to look into for such a venture. Please be advised that it, obviously, also depends on your field of studies and this is just a rather general overview to give you a few pointers.

Points taken into consideration when creating this list (in no particular order) were: Ease of contact, communication & response time & variety of subjects / degrees offered.

NIDA – National Institute of Development Administration

NIDA, out of all the Unis tested, seemed to be one of the few to actually put emphasis into their online presence. The Uni name doesn’t sound cool or progressive, their web presence looks much more modern than many other websites though (depending on the faculty that is though). The response time was also much faster than with any other University which already speaks for them. They offer a variety of courses which are all somewhat related to NIDA’s initial message of promoting ‘development administration’. Lots of the programs offer full time, part time, or research based programs which makes it easy for interested students to find a fitting program.

On the downside most programs seem to be rather expensive starting at around 700,000 THB and go up until around 1,500,000 THB. That is a lot. NIDA’s standing in Thailand as a graduate school is rather good though which might make the investment worth it.

More information on the NIDA website.

Chula – Chulalongkorn University

Chula is probably still the most famous University in Thailand. They offer loads of courses with the choice of English speaking courses being a bit more limited though. Nevertheless there are a lot of international courses available. Most of the Chula websites are terrible though and hence make it difficult to obtain appropriate information. The response time also was incredible long – at least in this very instance. It took several months for them to respond to an inquiry. Given the fact that Chula has lots of different schools the fee structure also highly differs but you shouldn’t expect it to be cheap as you will quite likely also have to pay for the Chula name when deciding to enroll here. In the areas I was looking into I also didn’t see any research based graduation possibilities but that could also differ within different faculties and you might be luckier when you give it a try in your respective field.

More info on the Chula website .

AIT – Asian Institute of Technology

The AIT is, for some reason, not very well known among undergraduates but once you reach graduate level it’s a household name. As one can guess from the name it focuses on Technology and has lots of respected scholars in this field at its disposal. They are also hosting international conferences there which might come in handy once you are thinking of graduating in that field of work. Besides being well known for its technology related research AIT also has a management school though and is trying to increase its standing in this field of research as well. As it stands right now I haven’t found any research based PhD option which means you would have to attend at least some classes on-site. The programs I looked into would have an accumulated fee of around 1,300,000 THB which, once again, is definitely not cheap.

More info on the AIT website .

ABAC – Assumption University of Thailand

ABAC doesn’t necessarily have the best standing amongst Universities in Thailand simply because it operates as a private Uni and that always brings lots of criticism with it. When looking at its PhD programs though you will find a rather big variety of choices. They even offer degrees in eLearning Methodology which is still unique in Thailand, I believe. The fees are starting somewhere around the 500,000 THB mark (for said elearning degree) and obviously can also go way up depending on the field of studies you’d choose. Some of the programs can be done via distance learning, some require on-site classes.

If you’re interested to see what ABAC has to offer, check out their PhD program website .

MUIC – Mahidol University International College

Mahidol is somewhat that outsider who overtook all the others by doing things a bit more different. The feel that MU provides is more structured (more strict maybe even) and more goal oriented. This approach now lands them frequently in the top spot of local Uni rankings. Their PhD offering is also quite extensive with ranges from medicine to business and music. The costs also differ between the programs and the PhD structure you choose but most examples I saw started somewhere around the 850,000 THB scale. There are full time, part time, and distance based possibilities available – again depending on the respective faculty.

For more information check out the Mahidol University Graduate School website .

Taiwan students can earn dual master’s degree with NYCU-ASU partnership program

W. P. Carey collaborates with Taiwan's NYCU, offering students a unique opportunity to study business analytics while strengthening global academic ties.

In an exciting new chapter of international collaboration, the W. P. Carey School of Business and Taiwan's National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University ( NYCU ) are launching the NYCU-ASU International Academic Partnership Program. As a dual master's degree program for NYCU College of Management students who have completed their first year of a master's degree at NYCU, the program allows qualified students to apply for and complete the second year of their degree in W. P. Carey's Master of Science in Business Analytics ( MS-BA ) program for both degrees from NYCU and ASU.

"Our collaboration with NYCU is a wonderful example of W. P. Carey's commitment to increasing the school's global reach in Asia while facilitating international knowledge exchange through graduate programs," says Ohad Kadan , Charles J. Robel Dean and W. P. Carey Distinguished Chair.

Ohad Kadan, Ben Shao, and NYCU leadership.

Students accepted into the NYCU-ASU International Academic Partnership Program will complete their MS-BA degree requirements in person on the ASU Tempe campus. W. P. Carey's MS-BA program prepares students to be changemakers in their field by offering five tracks — big data, cloud computing and tech consulting, fintech, marketing analytics, and supply chain analytics — to educate students on how big data is transforming the global economy.

After completing both universities' degree requirements, graduates will be awarded an MS-BA from W. P. Carey and a master's degree from their NYCU College of Management program. As a STEM-designated program, international students who graduate from W. P. Carey's MS-BA program through NYCU may be eligible for an up to 36-month Optional Practical Training (OPT) visa extension.

"We are very pleased to establish and strengthen the academic collaboration between ASU and NYCU through the creation of this new dual master’s degree program. By fostering a partnership, we seek to facilitate the exchange of graduate students, learning, expertise, knowledge, and cultural understanding between ASU and Taiwan," says Benjamin Shao , professor of information systems, associate dean for Asia-Pacific programs and initiatives, and co-director of the Digital Society Initiative .

"This partnership is especially significant following the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's announcement earlier this year to build a third manufacturing fabrication facility in Phoenix," says Kadan.

NYCU students who meet academic qualifications and are enrolled in one of the College of Management's eight qualifying master's degree programs are encouraged to apply for the NYCU-ASU International Academic Partnership Program by Sept. 1 for admission to ASU's spring 2025 semester, or by March 1, 2025, for admission to the fall 2025 semester.

A’ishah Abdalah is using her U.S. State Department scholarship to study Arabic this summer.

University of New Orleans student A’ishah Abdalah is one of 500 American college students to receive the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship. Abdalah, a junior international studies major, is studying Arabic in Amman, Jordan for six weeks this summer. More than 5,000 American students applied to participate in the competitive program.

After obtaining her undergraduate degree at UNO, Abdalah plans to attend law school and study international law. She is active in Model United Nations, a student organization that familiarizes students with the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of the United Nations. The Critical Language Program is part of a U.S. government effort to increase the number of Americans studying critical foreign languages. Participants gain language and cultural skills that enable them to contribute to U.S. economic competitiveness and national security. The program provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students studying one of following critical languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish or Urdu.

The program includes intensive language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences to promote rapid language gains. Scholars are expected to continue their language study beyond the program and apply their critical language skills in their future careers.
