I am intending to study the MSc Management at University of Brighton to enhance my academic knowledge and create better and further opportunities for my career. By doing a lot of research on the University website for the course, I can confidently say that this course will satisfy my curiosity and hope and it will lead me to a career that I aim to develop in a sustainable way.

In this MSc Management program at Brighton University, I will be able to do case study analyses, organization visits, and the choice of paid work experience which helps to prepare students for management-level positions and provides them the latest academic knowledge.Teaching is delivered with a variety of activities and students get the opportunity to interact and engage with tutors. I have found some demanding modules in this MSc Management programme which will help me to boost my career prospects. As an additional benefit, this MSc degree comes with an extra Postgraduate Diploma in Management awarded by Chartered Management Institute (CMI) which is highly regarded by professionals. These will add value to my achievements and will be key selling points when looking for jobs.

Following my SSC and Intermediate in Humanities, I completed my Bachelor of Business Administration major in Marketing from Royal University of Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2020. During my studies, I participated in many extra-curricular activities. I alwayslearn from my mistakes. I have my own critical thinking ability and leadership quality. As a person, I believe that I am a hard-working individual and tend to work patiently until I reach my goal. I have been working as a Sales Executive at Global Village International (Sylhet Zone) Bangladesh since 10th January 2018. Here, I came to realize that organizations give much value who has a master’s degree in Management. If I get the degree I will be able to gather the tools and techniques which will help me to fight with this globalization challenges. That is why I made a decision to enhance my academic platform and professional qualifications and skills and expand my career by studying the MSc Management at University of Brighton.

I have researched that this MSc Management course is designed to give students the best possible start for starting a successful career through invaluable insights and practical knowledge.After completion of this course, I want to be a Management Consultant in a renowned company of my home country in the short term. In the long term I have my goal increase my levels of independence and run my own business.I believe that this program will not only be a career enhancing as well as a potential career changing opportunity, but a life changing opportunity for me.

I prefer University of Brighton for several reasons. This is a public university based on four campuses in Brighton and Eastbourne on the south coast of England. The University welcomes over 3,000 international students to the University of Brighton each year. University of Brighton has received five National Teaching Fellowships and Brighton’s staff combines professional practice with teaching and research activity. Studying at Brighton offers an experience that goes way beyond the classroom. From day one they’ll help students to build the real-world knowledge and transferable skills that employers look for in graduate recruits. The University is awarded Silver by TEF ranking and ranked in the top 20 in the UK league tables for many subjects including health, fashion and textile, art, pharmacy and education. The university is in the top 25% of UK universities for world-leading research impact (REF 2014). At Brighton students can learn from industry experts who bring their professional experience into the classroom. I am confident that I can demonstrate the drive and ambition to position myself as the perfect student to study at University of Brighton.

Actually, I consider myself to be a dreamer with a vision. My to study in the UK because, UK is one of the top 3 higher education destinations in the world and qualifications are internationally recognized. Students get the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge, critical thinking, and connections to drive forward their careers. In my home country, degrees have not got international accreditation. Tuition is provided to get students pass the course, no ‘soft skills’ given. UK courses are generally shorter than other countries, helping to reduce overall tuition fees and accommodation costs. In Bangladesh, there are only few institutions where thousands of students engage in admission war to get a seat. Beside this, political chaos makes it harder to complete the degrees in time. UK higher education is inspected Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) regularly. Hence, this degree from the UK will give me better chance for getting into career market in higher position and handsome salary. Apart from all, UK is more welcoming and tolerant to international students than other western countries. I am strongly determined to put the maximum effort to build up my career and a bright future which I have alwaysdreamed of. So I will have lots of scope to work in Bangladesh as well as internationally after my post-graduation from UK and by this certainly I can be a part of the development of society.

Additionally, working at Harrison’s Accountancy and Insolvency Agency gave me valuable knowledge about liquidations and insolvencies of businesses, further solidifying my interest in pursuing a career in finance.

Staying updated with current financial affairs is crucial to me, and I regularly read the economy sections of reputable sources such as the BBC website and The Economist. Subscribing to a weekly update from RBS provides me with topical developments in the financial markets. Alongside my commitment to academic and professional pursuits, I have also developed essential skills through my job at O2 Retail. This experience has sharpened my interpersonal skills and honed my ability to negotiate mutually beneficial deals for both customers and the company. As a captain of my football team, I have learned the value of leadership, motivation, and maintaining high team morale, skills that have translated into success in class debates and the trading shares simulation at Cass Business School.

During a recent trip to Switzerland, I had the opportunity to meet with the assistant vice president at Credit Suisse, who shared insights into exchange rate processes within a leading investment bank. These conversations further solidified my understanding of the close relationship between economics and the finance sector.

Through a comprehensive study of Level Economics and practical experiences, I have been able to bridge the gap between theory and real-world situations. Engaging with professionals in the field has deepened my appreciation for the vital connection between economics and finance. I am confident that pursuing a university education will equip me with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the dynamic and fast-paced world of financial markets.

A guide to writing a Masters personal statement

If you are considering postgraduate study, you will need to think about writing an application that demonstrates why you are the right candidate for the course and their university. This is where your personal statement comes in. 

You’ll already have written a personal statement for your undergraduate application, so the concept should be familiar. However, there are some things you should be aware of when it comes to writing specifically for postgraduate study. 

In this guide, we’ll explain how to write a stand-out Masters personal statement and provide you with some valuable insights from our Masters Recruitment Manager Danielle, here at Warwick Business School (WBS).

What is a Masters personal statement?

An MSc personal statement, also known as a ‘statement of purpose’, supports your application to study a postgraduate course at university. It should highlight your key skills and experience whilst demonstrating your understanding of the course and conveying your academic skills and interests.

Your personal statement is your opportunity to sell yourself and differentiate yourself from any other applicant, share your passion for joining WBS and link your life experiences and skills to how you could contribute to a cohort.

How long should a Masters personal statement be?

A personal statement for postgraduate study should fit within two pages of A4. Whilst you won’t be penalised if it is slightly longer, you should always make sure the content is relevant and doesn’t repeat information elsewhere in your application. 

What do you need to prepare before writing a Masters personal statement? 

Before writing your personal statement for postgraduate study, there are a few things you should consider.

Research your options

Take the time to read through course pages and brochures. You’ll find in-depth information on what the course involves and how it might align with your career goals. Danielle explains how understanding what the course involves is key in demonstrating your suitability and passion for a course: 

All of our course webpages feature extensive information on the course modules, so take the time to show you’ve done your research in your personal statement. Your personal statement is your chance to relate yourself to our core values and demonstrate what a strong candidate you will be for one of our programmes. Ensure you also use this as an opportunity to link our programme to your future career.

Course titles should not be taken at face value. Whilst some universities will have courses with the same titles, the content will differ. You need to demonstrate you understand what the course entails and why you want to apply for a particular course as. Danielle adds:

Take time to look at the content of the course you are applying for; although course titles may be the same at different universities the course content can be different. Do your research and demonstrate this in your personal statement, showing how invested you are in studying at WBS.

Consider what you want from your studies

The range of choice when it comes to postgraduate study is vast, and it can feel overwhelming when deciding which course is right for you. 

Whilst opinions from your friends and family are important, they shouldn’t be the ultimate deciding factor when choosing a course. Ultimately you need to consider what you really want and whether it aligns with your career goals. 

Begin to prepare your application

Once you have decided which course you would like to apply for and you’ve ensured you meet the entry requirements, you will need to begin preparing your application. This includes collecting the correct documentation such as a CV, transcript, personal statement, and reference.

What should you include in a Masters personal statement?

Recruitment and admissions teams receive thousands of applications each year so it is important that your personal statement is to the point and demonstrates what they are looking for in their students. 

Danielle gives some insight into what our recruitment team looks for in a personal statement for a Masters degree:

Aim to keep your personal statement to the point by making sure you answer the following questions, addressing the key points our Selection Committee will be looking for:

• Why have you selected this course? What are your motivating factors?
• How do you see this course benefitting your career plans?
• What will you contribute to your cohort?

As well as addressing these key questions, you should also include the following:

Academic achievements 

You need to demonstrate how your undergraduate study has prepared you for a postgraduate course. You can do this by highlighting specific achievements, projects and pieces of work as well as mentioning any particular topics that interest you. 

Professional achievements

If you completed any professional work experience alongside your studies, it is a good idea to mention them here. Highlight any duties, tasks and responsibilities you had to demonstrate what you gained from this work experience. 

Relevant extracurricular activities

Including information about relevant extracurricular activities you are involved in can help to give a more rounded view of you as a person. This could include volunteering opportunities and any meaningful hobbies you have. 

Transferable skills

Your transferable skills should be highlighted throughout your personal statement. The types of things you could include are presentation skills, communication skills, analytical thinking and time management. Consider what you can bring to lectures and workshops. For example, if your course involves a lot of group work, use an example where you demonstrate your experience with this.

What should you avoid when writing a Masters personal statement?

Repetition of information.

When submitting both a CV and personal statement it can be easy to fall into the trap of just repeating the same information across both documents. Your personal statement is an opportunity for you to reflect and expand on what you have stated on your CV, rather than repeating the same information.

Not providing enough context

Simply listing your achievements without providing context will not prove to the recruitment teams that you are the right candidate for the course. Provide hard evidence to back up the statements you make and try to give two or three in-depth examples, rather than several weak answers. 

Not tailoring your application to the specific university or course

Recruitment and admissions teams are keen to hear why you have chosen a specific course and why you want to attend their university. You need to provide clear examples of what excites you about their institution and how you can align with their particular values.  

What do recruitment teams look for in a Masters personal statement?

University recruitment teams and selection committees review thousands of applications each year. To ensure your application stands out, you must show that you have taken the time to prepare and research your chosen university.

Recruitment teams want to see your passion for the subject and motivations for joining their institution. Detailing your experience and the skills you can bring will help to emphasise this. Danielle also suggests not overlooking the obvious when it comes to writing a personal statement:

It may sound simple but the first answer to this question is that the Selection Committee wants to see a well written, clearly structured personal statement which demonstrates good preparation and research.

What else do I need to include with my Masters application?

The documents you need to include in your application may vary by institution and course. But generally, as well as your personal statement, you will also need to include: 

• Academic and professional references
• Copies of your undergraduate degree certificate and academic transcripts
• A list of final year modules if you're still studying for an undergraduate degree
• A research proposal (not all courses will require this)

If you are an international student, there are some additional things you will need to provide including: 

• A copy of your passport
• Proof of your language proficiency through either a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) certificate, or any others that meet requirements outlined on our course pages.

When are the deadlines for Masters applications?

Deadlines for Masters programmes vary quite widely between courses and universities. Information on specific deadlines can be found on their respective course pages and postgraduate brochures . You should aim to make an application early in the cycle to ensure there are still places available on the course.

Deadlines for scholarships and external scholarships can also vary, so if you wish to apply for these, you will also have to factor in these deadlines.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an interview for masters programmes.

At WBS, there are no interviews for MSc courses. Instead, all decisions are made based on the application you submit. Your undergraduate transcript will be reviewed in depth along with your CV and personal statement.

How many Masters can you apply for?

If you are applying to a UK university, you can apply for as many courses and universities as you like. However, you should not over-stretch yourself and you should only apply for courses that you are really passionate about.

Writing an appropriately tailored application can be time-consuming and attempting to write too many could jeopardise your chances of being successful. 

Do you have to pay for your Masters application?

We require an application fee of £75 to cover administrative costs. If you're applying to multiple Warwick courses, remember each course will warrant its own application fee.

Managing financial affairs carefully is essential to a business’ success. From a young age, I knew I wished to become an entrepreneur like my father. But it was only during the course of my degree that I discovered the importance of analysing finances for success. Through hard work, I developed a talent for financial analysis during the course of my degree and that helped cement my decision to study finance and management at Masters-level in order to gain the requisite knowledge to manage my own travel business and handle my own financial affairs.

To help fulfil my ambition, I am studying Tourism Management for which I am expected to gain a high 2.1. I have excelled in the Financial Analyses module for which I received a First, which indicates my talent for finance, and in the Academic English Skills module for which I received an exceptionally high First. I worked particularly hard on this module because I know how it important it is in management to be a good communicator if you are to get employees under your supervision to do things correctly and be motivated. This knowledge should stand me in good stead for the management part of the degree.

My determination to succeed despite setbacks has paid off in the degree. I have raised my average grade this year in only a term by 10 percentage points through sheer hard work and patience, which should prepare me well for the challenging courses of the Masters. Before my degree, I completed a Higher Education Certificate in Tourism Management after school, in which I received high marks for the Economics course. At school, to prepare me for the world of business, I took a foundation course in Business for which I received a highly commendable grade, despite the difficulty of adjusting to life in Britain, having only moved to the UK at 17 from my native Kazakhstan.

Outside of the classroom, I have tried to gain the requisite practical experience of the business world through work placements and jobs. Last year, I undertook a work placement at the Royal Oxford Hotel, where I was chief receptionist. I was entrusted with great responsibility: I had to manage all customer queries and complaints, which taught me how to manage highly-pressured situations with equanimity, and to set prices of rooms, which allowed me to apply the financial knowledge I had gained from my studies. My work was so highly valued that the hotel offered me a job after my placement and I work there part-time, work I am able to juggle on top of my full load of academic studies.

The experience further strengthened my knowledge of the tourism industry: I had already been a receptionist at the Marlborough Hotel the summer before my placement. In the role, during my shifts I was effectively responsible for the running of the whole hotel and was charged with, among other things, managing the hotel’s supplies and doing the book-keeping, which gave me accounting knowledge that should come in handy during the Masters.

Outside of work and the classroom, I read financial management and economic books to help prepare me for the degree and my future career. To further my knowledge of tourism, I have also joined the Tourism Society whose conferences I enjoy attending to learn more about the industry I hope to enter and where I meet successful travel entrepreneurs from whom I learn a great deal. I hope to set up or manage the university’s Tourism Society when I begin the Masters.

I should also like to found a Gliding society when I start the course, as I am a keen member of the Oxford Gliding Club, where I spend many weekends helping to organise events.

I am determined to take advantage of every opportunity I receive on the course, as I have had to work hard for everything I have achieved after leaving my native country and following my dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur in the UK. The Masters will give me the skills and knowledge to fulfil my dream.

An MSc in International Financial Management would give me the unique opportunity to gain a comprehensive and subsequent depth in the field of finance and investment whilst learning to tackle practical challenges firms face in an international context with governance and ethical dilemmas. The allure to study the course at postgraduate level deepened when studying Macroeconomics during my undergraduate studies at Cass Business School. In this module, I thoroughly enjoyed studying the economy as a whole, including monetary and fiscal policy and scored 78% overall.

To broaden my horizons, I enrolled myself on online short courses such as Emerging Markets and Entrepreneurial Finance which demonstrate my curiosity, personal drive and strong willingness to learn to understand the versatility of the financial world as well as to divulge the practical application.

My interest in economics and finance first led me to undertake the role of finance assistant in June 2012 at a restaurant wherein I assisted with financial documents. This gave me the opportunity to consolidate my knowledge of managing a start-up. I was involved in making budgeting decisions, marketing the business and the profitability of the business. This enabled me to put my acquired skills of teamwork, business planning and resource allocation into practice.

Using the transferable skills I developed, I undertook work experience at Santander bank, which entailed shadowing a Financial Planning Manager. This gave me the opportunity to consolidate my knowledge of financial products and services by observing their application first-hand. I attended board meetings, procurement and finance meetings which gave me an insight into the importance of teamwork, communication, leadership, and problem-solving.

During my sixth form, I was always curious to learn how and where the capital is invested which fuelled my desire to learn more about financial markets. I took part in the Barclays Money Skills programme that helps young people to develop and improve their financial skills and knowledge. Upon completion of the week, I learned how budgeting and saving can help with more effective money management. More importantly, it enhanced my decision-making ability and confidence to take financial decisions in a responsible manner by being aware of the consequences.

In 2015, I I feel proud to have been awarded The Lord Mayor of London Scholarships for Academic Excellence. I enrolled myself on BSc Investment and Financial Risk Management at CASS Business School.. This programme has given me a good foundation on the usefulness of quantitative finance in today’s financial markets and the practice of risk management and analysis. Studying Corporate Finance presented me with the fundamentals of valuation, investment, and financing which exposed me to popular strategic and financial decisions. This module helped me gain the requisite knowledge to evaluate complex corporate financial problems. After scoring a high 2:1, I am keen to build on my interest in this topic which I hope will demonstrate my academic ability to study at this level.

In 2016, I undertook a three- day practical experience with Amplify Trading wherein I applied macroeconomic understanding to trade internationally. In regards to breaking financial news, I also operated as a market maker and sales trader to experience both the buy and sell side of the industry using trading systems utilised by most investment banks. Furthermore, I developed an understanding of how to allocate assets effectively with the objective of outperforming the benchmark. I firmly believe skills and knowledge gained on this programme helped cement my decision to study Financial Management.

My internship at Sanjay Financial Services, a non-banking financial company, is heavy on lending in exchange for personal assets like gold, property and agricultural land. I shadowed the Managing Director wherein I would observe the business dealings and analyse the risks involved in the transaction such as liquidity, credit and market risk. Additionally, I have been entrusted with greater responsibility so I have assisted with capital structure and the outlook for further expansion as well as attended conferences to learn more about the industry, which can be advantageous for the Entrepreneurial Finance module at SOAS. I believe my prior experience of seeing this in motion would prove to be beneficial for modules like Risk Management and Corporate Governance.

During my gap year in 2018, I travelled to India and volunteered as a teacher in Northern India, mainly Himachal Pradesh and a small town called Bhangel in Uttar Pradesh. I mainly taught English, Maths and General Knowledge to underprivileged children aged between 6- 15 years and also assisted them with their holiday projects. Volunteering in India provided me with invaluable experience as I cultivated equanimity to survive the vicissitudes of cultural differences. Most importantly, on World Environment Day, I pursued my passion for climate change so I helped formulate a plan to clean River Binwa in Baijnath, Himachal Pradesh based on the facilities being provided. I enlisted the help of the local council, waste management and more volunteers to collect sewage and contribute towards the conservation of the environment. This was an invigorating experience as I developed leadership skills which are acquired in the business world. (condense)

Aside from professional qualifications and work experience, the extracurricular activity that I am most passionate about is food blogging as skills learned through my blog have strengthened my ability to contribute ideas, plans, and visions that could bring the entitlement of maximum employability chances. I am an independent and self- reliant person who never shirks a challenge. My experiences have made me a stronger and resilient person who is not afraid to fight against adversity through sheer hard-work and patience. My undergraduate degree has equipped me well for life and the real world as I gained premier strategic skills which can add further value to my portfolio of competencies.

Given the opportunity, I will be able to learn a new language which not only will enhance my career prospects but will open a world of opportunities for me. Moreover, it offers a distinctive manifesto of personalised style of teaching and a vibrant atmosphere wherein I can reflect on myself and work towards my personal development by participating in several clubs, societies and volunteering opportunities. Through which, I will be able to showcase my skills to the potential employers. Following the MSc Course, I would like to pursue my career in the finance sector by working at one of the top investment banks.

Management & accounting personal statement example (postgraduate).

I have decided to apply to Msc Accounting and Management because I want to do career in this field and I am pretty sure that this program will equip me with lot of tools and skills required to do so.

In addition, through this program I will have the chance to sink into the world of economy and profit of the high demand that is there currently for management and accounting graduates in the jobs market.

On top of this, I have always been fascinated by how Accountancy and management can collaborate to lead a business to success or failure.

Furthermore, it is the ability we gain to guide and help customers become more profitable hopefully that even attract me more. By the same token, I always get excited when I solve an accounting problem or successfully balance an account.

As far as my personal experiences are concerned, they led to me have patience, self-emotion control as well as realize the importance of listening, respecting the opinions of others and the significance of being versatile.

Being an independent person, I believe that my strongest strengths are the abilities to work under a deadline pressure and deliver the expected results quickly, accurately and be self-motivated with the saying “if you give once it will be a habit, give up should not an option don’t give up” from Michael Jordan in head.

In problem-solving situation, I have a tireless eye for details and analyze the problem through several techniques before making any important decision. Skills, I think are necessary to make career in both fields of management and accounting.

At college, I did a project work in the last year of my degree program entitled “Working capital management at HMT (INDIA)”.The help of the company’s financial officer in collecting and analyzing data gave me more insights of accountancy and others numerous aspects of accounting.

For the first time, I was in a real accountancy practical situation and even though my theory knowledge did help me, I realized that if I want to do career in this field, a deeper knowledge and strengthening skills are unconditional.

This project was a catalyst in the decision of taking my knowledge of accountancy to the next level and follows a career in this domain. More it helps me develop skills like group works, collaboration and how to receive critics from part of others.

Also recently, I had an intern for an Immigration company called Mercan Capital Limited in India which provided me with in-depth understanding of management uses and its principles.

My responsibilities were to teach French, advice and guide workers wishing to settle in Quebec. During this internship I developed skills in motivating, advising people and also it has also improved my communications skills and sense of planning and organizing.

My passion for management and accounting is unconditional and I always have a keen interest in knowing what is happening in the business environment as a whole. I believe that my personal attributes, academic achievements and relevant work experience make me a suitable candidate for the course.

Another significant factor is that, I am a highly sociable person full of interpersonal skills, open-minded, always happy to meet new persons and who strictly respect the set rules and regulations.

More I am person who is always ready or on a go to participate to take part of students and community events, as I believe through that way I can contribute in my way in creating and promoting a healthy and better student environment.

Overall, I see myself as am a set goals achieved-driven person, full of commitment, hardworking and who can turn difficult challenges into a source of opportunities and gain personal profit from them.

Enrolling on the university degree of management and accounting is just the beginning for me, I aspire to achieve more in years to come starting with becoming senior manager or manager and accountant in a corporate and on long term establish my own business corporation.

Undoubtedly, if I get admitted at your university I will prove myself as a dedicated, role model student who will make a every work and teaching session counts and will extensively take part of them in order to obtain the maximum knowledge from them.
