Polite invitation to submit article: Predatory journal's new strategy

I would like to invite your attention regarding predatory journal's new strategy of polite invitation to submit article by email. I have enclosed two email messages of predatory journal for reference received more recently on 11.01.2019 and 30.12.2018 in my email ID moc.liamg@daud3umahs (Dr. Shamim T) [ Figure 1 ]. I have verified the journal Medical Research Archives and found that they are giving false bibliographic databases’ indexation of the above journal. I also searched the editor designation of A. Phiri and I did not find authentic affiliation of the above editor in the concerned website of the journal. In the second email received on 11.01.2019, I have got invitation to fill the pre-Registration form [ Figure 1 ]. In the journal webpage, I found that Medical Research Archives charges the following article publication fees for accepted papers: ( Authors with no institutional, grant, or research funding: $1250; Authors with institutional, grant, or research funding: $2999 ).[ 1 ] The Medical Research Archives is hosted under KEI journals in the web.[ 2 ] Individual- and community-wise strategies to curb young researchers from predatory publishers and measures to initiate predatory publishers’ detecting software were proposed recently.[ 3 ] It is sad to find that there are no legal measures implemented so far to halt the flourishing of predatory journals where innocent researchers become the prey of these journals.

• Introduction

The  Medical Research Archives  is the official journal of the European Society of Medicine. It publishes original research, reviews, and case reports addressing health issues of interest to a global community of medical professionals. Submissions from non-members of the society are welcome. 

The  Medical Research Archives  is a fully open-access journal with no embargo period. All articles are freely available on a variety of digital platforms.

An evidence-based approach to spotting a predatory journal

Evaluating an unfamiliar journal is easy if you know what to look for. Here are 10 things to keep in mind when considering submitting to a new journal:

Article Types

Manuscript organization.

Beginning section The following elements are required, in order:

• Authors & Affiliations (in separate file to ensure a blind review)

Middle section The following elements can be renamed as needed:

• Acknowledgments

Other elements

• All figures, tables, and images should be numbered and inserted within the text
• Figures should appear immediately following the paragraph in which the figure is cited
• Appendices are not allowed, except for tables which span more than 1 full page
• Please do not upload figure files separetely. Include them within the main text.

Style and Format

The Medical Research Archives uses the AMA citation format.

Title Titles may consist of no more than 140 characters. Avoid using acronyms within the title. The type of article should be clear after reading the title. Case reports must contain the words “case report” within the title.

Authorship Everyone who is listed as an author should have made a substantial and direct contribution to the article, such as contributing to the conception, design, analysis, or interpretation of data. Individuals who have made only auxiliary contributions such as funding acquisition, proofreading, and technical services should be listed in the Acknowledgment section.

Abstract Abstracts may consist of no more than 350 words.

The aim of an abstract is to summarize the objectives and results of the article. Structured abstracts (including the following elements: Background, Aims, Methods, Results, and Conclusion) are permitted but not required.

Abstracts should not contain references or excessive abbreviations.

Introduction The introduction should:

• Provide background information that puts the manuscript into context and allows readers outside the field to understand its significance
• Clearly state the aim and scope of the article
• Define the problem addressed
• Note any relevant controversies or disagreements related to the topic

Methods The Methods section should be sufficiently detailed to allow other researchers to replicate the work.

Results Results should be clear and concise. Avoid mixing elements of the Discussion section with the Results.

Discussion The Discussion section should interpret the results of the work but not repeat them. It is acceptable to divide the Discussion into subsections.

Conclusion Conclude the article with a paragraph or two summarizing the conclusions that can be drawn from the work. Do not state any conclusions which are not supported by the results.

Conflicts of Interest Statement All authors are required to disclose all financial relationships (including employment, grants, patent ownership, and other interests) with any commercial entities that have an interest in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript, if such relationship existed at any time in the last 24 months.

If there are no conflicts to declare, this section may read “The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare.”

Funding Statement Please list all funding sources and grant numbers in this section. If the authors received no funding for the work discussed in the manuscript this section may be omitted.

Acknowledgements Those who contributed to the work but do not meet the authorship criteria should be listed in the Acknowledgments section with a brief description of their contribution.

References Ensure that your References section lists full and current bibliography details for every cited work at the time of the submission of the manuscript.

Articles in the journal are published under a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 3.0) and may be shared or distributed by anyone as long as attribution is given to the journal. Authors are not asked to transfer copyrights to the journal.

Publication Schedule

Issues of the journal are published monthly at the end of each month. There are also several special issues published each year in addition to the regular monthly issues.

As an open access journal with zero subscription or advertising revenue, the journal must charge a fee to cover the costs associated with peer-review, copyediting, and publication. Members of the society publish for free. Reduced rates are available for authors from these developing countries.

How to publish in this journal

The set of journals have been ranked according to their SJR and divided into four equal groups, four quartiles. Q1 (green) comprises the quarter of the journals with the highest values, Q2 (yellow) the second highest values, Q3 (orange) the third highest values and Q4 (red) the lowest values.

The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.

Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.

This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.

Evolution of the total number of citations and journal's self-citations received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. Journal Self-citation is defined as the number of citation from a journal citing article to articles published by the same journal.

Evolution of the number of total citation per document and external citation per document (i.e. journal self-citations removed) received by a journal's published documents during the three previous years. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents.

International Collaboration accounts for the articles that have been produced by researchers from several countries. The chart shows the ratio of a journal's documents signed by researchers from more than one country; that is including more than one country address.

Not every article in a journal is considered primary research and therefore "citable", this chart shows the ratio of a journal's articles including substantial research (research articles, conference papers and reviews) in three year windows vs. those documents other than research articles, reviews and conference papers.

Submission Guide

medRxiv (pronounced "med-archive") is a free online archive and distribution server for complete but  unpublished manuscripts (preprints) in the medical, clinical, and related health sciences. Preprints are preliminary reports of work that have not been certified by peer review. They should not be relied on to guide clinical practice or health-related behavior and should not be reported in news media as established information.

medRxiv was founded by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), a not-for-profit research and educational institution, Yale University, and BMJ, a global healthcare knowledge provider. The server is owned and operated by CSHL. No endorsement of a manuscript’s methods, assumptions, conclusions, or scientific quality by CSHL, Yale University, or BMJ is implied by its appearance in medRxiv. A manuscript may be submitted prior to, or concurrently with, submission to a journal but will not be posted if it has already been accepted for publication, published, or posted elsewhere.

A manuscript may be deposited in medRxiv in draft or final form provided that it concerns a relevant scientific field and that all its authors have consented to its deposition. The manuscript must not have been posted elsewhere, nor should it have been accepted for publication in a journal. Authors wishing to deposit preprints must first register on the site. There is no charge for registration or manuscript deposition.

medRxiv is a mechanism for sharing results of research studies performed in the health sciences. All manuscripts uploaded to medRxiv undergo a basic screening process for offensive and/or non-scientific content and for material that might pose a health risk. Manuscripts are not certified by peer review before being posted online. medRxiv reserves the right to decline to post any preprint for any reason.

Manuscripts are not typeset before being posted online. The author’s manuscript is either submitted as, or automatically converted into, a PDF file.

Preprints appear in medRxiv in the order in which they were approved for posting. They are retrievable via the web interface at no charge.

Submission Format

The simplest way to deposit a manuscript on medRxiv is to upload a single PDF including the text and any figures/tables. All manuscripts should include the title, author names and affiliations, and abstract on the title page. Supplemental data should be created in a separate file or files.

Alternatively, you may upload a Word file containing the main text (plus any tables) and separate figure files, from which a single PDF will be created. An automated PDF-conversion engine is responsible for the conversion and it can process many figure file formats, including JPEG, TIFF, EPS, PowerPoint. The following formats are not compatible, however: PICT, Bitmap, Excel, PSD. For these files, you will need to convert them to PDF or another acceptable file format.

LaTeX files should be converted to PDF prior to submission.

Supplementary Material and Data Sharing

Authors are free to include Supplemental Material such as additional tables and MPEG files. Large datasets, however, should be deposited in the appropriate scientific community database (e.g., clinical trial data sharing sites , Protein Data Bank [PDB], GenBank, NIH sites such as BioLINCC). (See "Revisions" guidelines below.)

Authors should abide by all relevant community guidelines for use and acknowledgment of data resources (e.g., the Fort Lauderdale guidelines), obtaining permission where required and citing the appropriate laboratory, website, and accession numbers, including clinical trial registration information. They may also include links to data or clinical protocols deposited elsewhere. At submission authors must include a statement regarding the availability of all data referred to in the manuscript, along with links to any data hosted in an external repository.

Preprints deposited in medRxiv can be cited using their digital object identifier (DOI). medRxiv DOIs assigned prior to December 11, 2019, have a simple eight-digit suffix, whereas those assigned after this date will also include the date stamp for the day of submission approval (see below). Revised versions of manuscripts retain the same DOI assigned to the first version.

If there are multiple versions of the preprint and you wish to cite a specific version, you can do so by adding the version-specific URL.

Ethics and Reporting

Authors should declare at submission that all relevant ethical guidelines have been followed, all necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained, all necessary patient/participant consent has been obtained and the appropriate institutional forms archived. Any clinical trials described should be registered with an internationally recognized trial registry and the trial ID included in the manuscript.

Authors should include a competing interest statement, including explicit acknowledgment of whether the authors or their institutions received any payments or services in the past 36 months from a third party that could be perceived to influence, or give the appearance of potentially influencing, the submitted work. Authors should also provide a funding statement with details of all funding that supported the work presented, including explicit acknowledgment of whether the authors or their institutions at any time received payment or services from a third party for any aspect of the submitted work.

Terms of distribution

After a manuscript is deposited in medRxiv, it is citable and cannot be removed. The copyright remains with the author, who is asked to select from several distribution/reuse options under which to make the manuscript available ( CC BY , CC BY-NC , CC BY-ND , CC BY-NC-ND , CC0, or no reuse). By posting on medRxiv, authors consent to text mining of their work (e.g., by search engines or researchers).

medRxiv reserves the right to identify and remove any preprints for any reason, and in particular preprints that contain plagiarized material or describe experimental work that is not performed in accordance with the relevant ethical standards for research using animals or human subjects.

Authors are free to submit a revised version of a manuscript at any time (prior to acceptance at a journal) by clicking on “Submit a revision” within the Author Area. The new version will use the same DOI as the original submission, which also will remain accessible on the medRxiv site. If there are changes to any Supplemental data, please resubmit all Supplemental files for the article. If there are no changes to Supplemental data, there is no need to resubmit Supplemental files.

Withdrawals

Authors may request to have their manuscript marked as “Withdrawn” if they no longer stand by their findings/conclusions or acknowledge fundamental errors in the manuscript. In these cases, a statement explaining the reason for the withdrawal is posted on the medRxiv manuscript page to which the DOI defaults. The original manuscript is still accessible via the Info/History tab on medRxiv. In extremely rare, exceptional cases, preprints may be removed for legal reasons.

Many research journals allow posting on preprint servers such as medRxiv prior to publication. A list of journal policies can be found on Wikipedia and SHERPA/RoMEO . Authors should consult these lists, journal websites, and other sources of information before posting on medRxiv.

medRxiv can save authors time in submitting papers to journals by transmitting their manuscript files and metadata directly from medRxiv. Publication Fees

The publication of an article in  Upsala Journal of Medical Sciences incurs a charge of  EUR 55/USD 65/SEK 580 per page. VAT will be added to customers within Sweden and the European Union, except non-Swedish organizations that provide their VAT-number.

The total sum will be charged to the author(s) upon acceptance of their article. It is the publication year that governs the publication fee, not the submission year.

There is no publication fee for members of ”Upsala Läkareförening och Svenska Läkaresällskapet”. 

WITHDRAWAL OF MANUSCRIPT If you withdraw your manuscript after it has been peer reviewed, copyedited and typeset (but not yet published) you will be charged according to the following: EUR 220/USD 250/SEK 2300 per article.

Background: The epidemiology, clinical course, and outcomes of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the Russian population are unknown. Information on the differences between laboratory-confirmed and clinically diagnosed COVID-19 in real-life settings is lacking.

Methods: We extracted data from the medical records of adult patients who were consecutively admitted for suspected COVID-19 infection in Moscow between 8 April and 28 May 2020.

Results: Of the 4261 patients hospitalized for suspected COVID-19, outcomes were available for 3480 patients (median age, 56 years; interquartile range, 45-66). The most common comorbidities were hypertension, obesity, chronic cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Half of the patients (n = 1728) had a positive reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), while 1748 had a negative RT-PCR but had clinical symptoms and characteristic computed tomography signs suggestive of COVID-19. No significant differences in frequency of symptoms, laboratory test results, and risk factors for in-hospital mortality were found between those exclusively clinically diagnosed or with positive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RT-PCR. In a multivariable logistic regression model the following were associated with in-hospital mortality: older age (per 1-year increase; odds ratio, 1.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.06), male sex (1.71; 1.24-2.37), chronic kidney disease (2.99; 1.89-4.64), diabetes (2.1; 1.46-2.99), chronic cardiovascular disease (1.78; 1.24-2.57), and dementia (2.73; 1.34-5.47).

Conclusions: Age, male sex, and chronic comorbidities were risk factors for in-hospital mortality. The combination of clinical features was sufficient to diagnose COVID-19 infection, indicating that laboratory testing is not critical in real-life clinical practice.

Choose a Program of Education

Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University welcomes applications from students of all countries who are interesting in studying of medicine, biomedicine, pharmacy, psyhology or social sciences. We offer Bachelor’s and Specialty Degree programmes for applicants who have completed advanced secondary school. Master's, Residency and Postgraduate programmes are provided for those who wish to continue their studies in higher school (the level of education required for admission is indicated in the description of the relevant program).

Please, note:

Most teaching at our University is carried out in Russian (with the exception of some English-specific programmes). If you choose the program in Russian, you must be convinced that you have sufficient fluency in written and spoken Russian to cope with the program from the start. Our one-year preparatory courses can help you in studing Russian as well as biology and chemistry, before you start education in higher school.

to determine the financial basis of your training and to get acquainted with the list of documents required as well as exams and deadlines for submission of documents.

Admission is carried out at the expense of budget allocations of the federal budget, as well as at the expense of physical and legal entities in accordance with contracts for the provision of paid educational services. The following students are eligible for admission at the expense of the Russia federal budget allocations on a par (in general competition) with citizens of the Russian Federation:

• Foreign citizens and persons without citizenship who are compatriots living abroad
• Foreign citizens eligible for higher education at the expense of budgetary allocations in accordance with international treaties and intergovernmental agreements of the Russian Federation.

Other international students can also study at the expense of the federal budget, if they have won a scholarship within the quota established by the Government of the Russian Federation. Please apply for state scholarships in advance and choose «The Russian National Research Medical University» on the website Future-in-russia .

Prepare Application Documents and Submit Application for Admission

If you need legalization of educational documents in Russia go through procedure of foreign education recognition. We can assist you in recognizing secondary education documents for filing at our university. Recognition of documents for submission to several universities in Russia and documents on higher education is carried out by an authorized organization.

• Getting an invitation and a visa takes more than a month. Keep this in mind when planning your visit.

If you do not have the results of the Unified State Examination of Russia or a state scholarship, you must  pass the entrance exams. All exams will be online, with proctoring system. Please look through RULES of remote entrance examinations using a proctoring system to   Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University below. Sign a training contract (if you are going to study under a contract), pay for tuition and get a document of enrollment to the University. Reasons for enrollment are:
