MA Creative Writing

Hanis Husin, a true child of sunny city-state Singapore, has dedicated years to the non-profit sector. With a BA(Hons) in Arts Management and a recent MA in Creative Writing, she strives to support the literary arts community through her day job. She is also the creative director of a small press, passionately producing works for the Malay-Muslim readers.

When not living a thousand lives through books, she weaves poetry, exploring the depths of self. She is working on her debut novel – a dystopian tale set in Singapore, delving into themes of identity and history.

Thesis work

Hannah - Poetry and Prose of Another Life is a poetry compilation that experiments the use of a persona for self-exploration. Through free verse, it aims to portray the persona's evolution across three stages: fragmentation, loss, and the dismantling of the self with eloquent poetic expression and delving into the intricate depths of personal identity and introspection.

Rooted (working title, work-in-progress) – set in dystopian Singapore, Na discovers a hidden community of survivors residing underground. Embracing her role as a runner, she fearlessly navigates the treacherous catacombs and tunnels that connect the island's disparate districts. However, her world is upended when she stumbles upon an enchanting utopia in the East. A quest for survival and a fight to belong, where the pursuit of self-preservation is eclipsed by the impending conflict and the dark history that threatens to shatter their fragile existence.

What will I learn?

Develop your literary voice and create stories that come alive, from page to stage and screen.

The MA Creative Writing is the first-of-its-kind in Singapore and Southeast Asia focused on graduating publishable authors, critical writers and producing new literature and written work.

In this one and only taught creative writing programme in Singapore, you will acquire a deep appreciation of the written word and the construction of the written forms such as poetry, creative non-fiction, fiction, screenplays and fiction-critical writing through formal modules and regular writing workshops and peer study.

The programme prepares the writers, editors, publishers, cultural curators and writing teachers of tomorrow who develop narratives that migrate from page to stage and screens. while aligning Singapore and Southeast Asia to the world's exponentially growing market for literary production, publishing and pedagogy.

You will gain both breadth and depth through workshops devoted to all the major genres –fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama – followed by a creative thesis project written in the genre of your choice. This sustained study of writing, editing and publishing provides students a critical, theoretical and historical framework for the analysis of literature, art, communication and arts pedagogy.

Intensive graduate writing workshops and dialogue with visiting writers improves writing, reading and editing abilities while also providing meta-lessons in perception, creative problem-solving, social-emotional intelligence, communicative precision, interpersonal diplomacy, community, empathy, and human nature. Timeless philosophical questions about identity, knowledge, individuality, work, community, family, nationality, love, ethics and meaning arise and evolve through sustained, informed and self-aware writing in addition to consultations with our published writing faculty, workshop peers, guest writers and industry professionals.

You will have an opportunity to participate in local and regional writing festivals to build an awareness of networks, circulation and reception of the written word. The programme features workshops and dialogues with visiting writers from around the world, including Asian and Singapore writing voices.

Graduates of the programme have already made a significant mark being published by international literary publishers and winning awards particularly in Singapore.

About Creative Writing

Creative writing starts with imagination. As imagination has no boundaries so does creative writing is boundaryless. Writing such as technical, formal, research, and legal is based on facts, so there are restrictions. You cannot use imaginative language, in facts whereas, there are no norms to be followed in creative writing.

Your perspective in creative writing is the most unique thing and that’s why your writing stands out as the most unique. Some use creative writing as a tool to vent their thoughts while some use it to journal their day-to-day experiences.

Types of Creative Writing

Poetry writing:.

Poetry writing is an art. It is like music that comes with a flow and rhythm. A poem uses a short number of words with larger and deeper meanings. Below is an example of a few lines from the poem Middle Passage by Robert Hayden.

“8 bells. I cannot sleep, for I am sick

with fear, but writing eases fear a little

since still my eyes can see these words take shape

upon the page & so I write, as one

would turn to exorcism. 4 days scudding,

but now the sea is calm again. Misfortune

follows in our wake like sharks (our grinning

tutelary gods).”

From these lines, one can deduce different meanings and perspectives. How Robert explains writing eases his fears in just a few lines.

Novel Writing:

This is the favorite thing that most writers love to do. Writing a novel and publishing it in your name and receiving a bestseller award is what writers love to do. But writing a Novel is not an easy thing to do. It requires many skills like imagination, vocabulary, character development, good story, etc. This type of creative writing is the most loved one. The greatest authors of all time are Leo Tolstoy, William Shakespeare, James Joyce, and many more. You can read their writing and get inspired by how to write.

Daily Journal Writing:

This type of creative writing includes writing the occurrence of the events daily. If you are going through a tough phase in life and don’t know what to do and whom to tell, then you can start writing a daily journal. It is best to exercise to express your feelings and let the negativity inside you go from within you. You can write about 250 to 500 words daily. There is no specific format for writing the daily journal. Whatever comes to your mind, you can note it down. This can also be a learning exercise for you.

Playwriting :

Playwriting is intended to be used in theatres. Playwriting is focused on character development so that there is one protagonist and antagonist. Having two opposite characters makes the play more interesting for the audience. While writing a play one has to keep theatre in his mind. The special effects used in theatre, the entry, and exit of actors, and the costumes according to the character all are necessary from a playwriting point of view.

Scriptwriting is similar to playwriting. The difference between scriptwriting and playwriting is scriptwriting is written for movies and television shows and playwriting is written for theatre. Everything else remains the same. Scriptwriting demands character development and an interesting story as in playwriting.

Fiction Writing :

Fiction writing is based on plot, character, and meaning by the writer’s imagination. Fiction writing is utilized on Television, in Plays, Movies, etc. The best authors for fiction writing are J K Rowling, Stephen King, and Ernest Hemingway.

Non-Fiction Writing:

In this type of writing, there is a slight difference from fiction writing. Nonfiction writing consists of real events and not the imagination of the writer

About the programme.

As the centre of English language culture in Asia, Singapore’s social and civic influence and allure are enormous. In the fostering and shaping of the next generation of Singaporean writers, NTU has been the dominant institution for the past decade. Few Singaporean writers of esteem, locally or internationally, are without a connection to NTU – from Singapore’s greatest poet Boey Kim Cheng to young internationally-celebrated novelists such as Sharlene Teo and Amanda Lee Koe. The Creative Writing and Publishing MA aims to extend this influence to publishers – a contingent that will not only shape the civic appeal of Singapore literature for decades to come, but fan out across Asia and act as Singapore’s representatives to the rest of the literary and publishing world.

The programme builds on NTU’s existing relationships and networks with literary organisations, publishers, writers and communities, and its strong branding as a centre of excellence for creative writing, in Singapore and across Asia.

Student writing in a book

Course description

You’ll study contemporary creative writing methods and practices and develop your skills in different genres, cross-genres and a wide range of formal and genre experimentations. You’ll also develop and explore your own creative and critical writing through practical workshops and the critical reading of contemporary creative and theoretical texts.

You’ll be encouraged to take all four creative writing core modules, with a minimum of three, which are designed to interact with each other theoretically, thematically and methodologically, to allow for experimentation between literary practices and productive genre crossovers.

The course culminates in a dissertation. You’ll be producing portfolios of both creative and critical work for each module and for your dissertation, all of which may take the form of poetry, prose poetry, short stories, a novel extract, poetic prose, hybrid texts and other genres, as well as formal or cross-media experimentations.

This MA will help you develop your creative writing to a publishable quality, providing a positive, friendly, nurturing, intellectual and creative environment for confident, bold and imaginative development of contemporary creative writing forms and practices. You’ll explore your own writing through practical workshops and learn how to creatively and constructively critique your own and other students' work.

You’ll benefit from the buzzing literary culture at Sheffield and get involved in public and university readings, publications and festivals throughout your time with us. You're encouraged to publish your work and to participate in student-led, peer-feedback editorial sessions.

We run monthly public readings within the Centre for Poetry and Poetics with established writers and have an annually published creative writing journal, Route 57 , which is edited and assembled by our own creative writing students. Each year we also run various creative writing projects, student readings and hubs which will give you a variety of opportunities to meet fellow writers within our well established Postgraduate Creative Writing community which comprises current and alumni students of the MA and PhD.

An open day gives you the best opportunity to hear first-hand from our current students and staff about our courses.

  • 2 years part-time

How we teach core modules

For the four core creative writing modules, you’ll meet for a two-hour workshop each week. These workshops are held in the late afternoons or early evenings.

A workshop is an informal, creative and critical environment that allows you to receive feedback on your writing from both the tutor and your fellow students.

You’ll have the opportunity to discuss creative and theoretical practices, drawing on a wide range of selected contemporary reading material. You'll be encouraged to produce new writing on a weekly basis, which we discuss in the workshops.

How we teach optional modules

Modules from MA English Literature are taught in seminars, which can vary from 1.5 to 2.5 hours long. These are held weekly or fortnightly depending on the module. Many of these seminars are held during the day.

Teaching staff

Our current staff are active and internationally-recognised authors, academics and creative forces in their fields:

  • Dr Agnes Lehoczky (Programme Convenor for the MA in Creative Writing, Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing)
  • Professor Adam Piette (Professor of Modern Literature)
  • Clare Fisher (Lecturer in Creative Writing)
  • Dr Michael Kindellan (Vice Chancellor’s Fellow)
  • Jane Lowe (Creative Writing Programme Administrator)

Former teaching staff have included Dr Vahni Capildeo, Professor Simon Armitage, Dr Honor Gavin, Professor Denise Riley, Dr Laura Joyce and Dr Rachel Genn.

You'll be assessed at the end of each term on creative writing portfolios which will include your creative work and a critical essay as well as your dissertation project which will consist of both creative and critical components.

The dissertation is 80% creative and 20% critical reflection on your own work, genre or relevant literary tradition. You'll prepare for it through work you've done in both creative writing modules. The word count for fiction is:

  • 12,000 words of creative work
  • 4,000 words of which may already have been workshopped or submitted
  • 3,000-5,000 word critical essay

For poetry, the word count is:

  • 20 poems, or equivalent (roughly up to 400 lines approx), five of which may have already been previously workshopped or submitted (as long as drafts are submitted to indicate changes)
  • 3,000-5,000 words critical essay

Mixed portfolios are welcome. For work previously submitted, we would like you to submit drafts to show changes and developments made to the material.

Area of study: Creative Writing (English, Masters) Degrees:  BA in Playwrighting and Dramaturg, MA in Theory of Dramatic Arts and Media Hometown:  Banjauka, Bosnia and Hercegovina

Why did you select your program? I gained a Fulbright stipend at UNL. Apart from that, I wanted to experience the U.S. Creative Writing programs and workshops, since there are not many opportunities in my country to actually learn something about Creative Writing as a discipline. My culture focuses more on teaching playwriting, which I deeply appreciate, but I wanted to broaden my horizons a bit, maybe by trying to write more fiction. What has been your best experience as a graduate student at Nebraska? An opportunity to learn things about American history and culture. An opportunity to engage in conversations with brilliant writers, poets, theorists, and people. Who have been some of your strongest mentors or role models here? I enjoyed Amanda Gailey's classes quite a lot. This professor is both intellectually and personally inspiring in so many ways. Do you have research experience? If so, please describe. I did an MA back in Belgrade, Serbia, at the University of Arts in Belgrade. It was on dramatic theory, questioning the dramatic structure of three contemporary Serbian playwrights (Tanja Sljivar, Maja Pelevic, Dimitrije Kokanov) to confirm the hypothesis that the dramatical structure of these writings shows patriarchal discourses on a woman and sexual violence (especially acts of initiation into patriarchal society - rape being seen as a "rite-of-passage"). What are your plans once you have earned the degree? To write. Always to write.
