Law and Psychology

Jd/phd — law and psychology.

There are nearly as many intersections between law and psychology as there are areas of policy regulation. Conflict resolution and negotiation; judgment and decision-making capacity; prejudice and stereotyping; criminal responsibility; competency; assessment of evidence, including the reliability of eyewitnesses, and lie detection; hedonics; developmental psychology and educational policy; addiction and drug policy—these are just a few of the frontiers open to scholars and practitioners educated in both law and psychology.

Stanford has a rich tradition of collaboration between its psychology department and law school, with faculty members co-authoring publications, and students working together and enrolling in interdisciplinary programs. Stanford’s psychology department has long been considered the strongest in the nation, with an atypical breadth of scholarly strength that supports a wide range of student interests. Stanford is also one of the nation’s leading centers for neuroscience research , bringing together biologists, psychologists, social scientists, and policymaker-lawyers to deepen our understanding of the brain.

Students pursuing a JD/PhD in law and psychology generally go on to academic careers in law schools, psychology departments, policy jobs, and think tanks. However, issues pursued through this joint degree program are also highly relevant to legal practice. Every day, litigators and negotiators make strategic decisions based on accounts of human decision-making. Those who regulate markets make decisions based on accounts of how people process distinct sorts of information. Those who work with medical ethicists make judgments that depend on assumptions about competency or the nature of pain.

Special Requirements

Students must have completed a year of law school before entering the psychology department or have completed a year of psychology graduate school before applying to the law school.

Course Requirements

As many as 54 quarter units of approved courses may be counted toward both degrees. No more than 31 quarter units of approved courses that originate outside the law school may count toward the law degree.

The maximum number of law school credits that may be counted toward the PhD in psychology is the greater of: (i) 36 quarter units; or (ii) the maximum number of units from courses outside the department that PhD candidates in psychology are permitted to count toward the PhD under general psychology department guidelines or in the case of a particular student’s individual program.

Note to applicants:  The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program awards full funding to Stanford graduate students from all disciplines, with additional opportunities for leadership training and collaboration across fields. Joint Degree applicants are encouraged to apply to the  Knight – Hennessy Scholars Program.  Please be aware that the Knight-Hennessy Scholars applications are due in early Autumn one year prior to enrollment. Bringing together outstanding researchers from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds and jurisdictions, our research centres and institutes nurture individual research, but also actively encourage and support collaboration and partnerships that expand cross-disciplinary research.

Who this course is for

What this course will give you

UCL Laws has been one of the leading centres of legal education in the world for almost 200 years. Rated as being Number 1 for research quality in the UK compared with all other Law Schools in the country by the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), UCL Laws' community of intellectually dynamic scholars responds to today's global challenges. Through our research, we help to shape government policy, national and international law and practice.

Combining a strong theoretical foundation in the law with world-leading expertise in empirical legal studies and interdisciplinary research, UCL Laws offers an outstanding educational experience to our doctoral students, with special work-in-progress workshops, dedicated conferences, and teaching experience.

The foundation of your career

A graduate from the UCL Laws PhD programme will have developed advanced skills in legal research, analysis and writing, public presentations and in almost all cases teaching at university level. Our graduates are well placed to pursue careers in the global academic world, but the research, analytical and writing skills obtained during the PhD also transfer easily to high level work in government, non-governmental organisations and the commercial sector.

Employability

Our PhD graduates have entered a wide range of careers including top academic positions in the UK and overseas, international organisations, private sector, NGOs and government. 'The international reputation and expertise of the Faculty is well known and is what first attracted me to UCL. After my doctoral studies I was delighted to join the faculty as a Lecturer. The community of support at UCL Faculty of Laws undoubtedly enhanced my research and enabled me to pursue avenues that may not otherwise have been possible'. Dr Anna Donovan Lecturer, UCL Laws

The Faculty has a longstanding reputation for high-quality legal research with real world impact. We have long-established links with the judiciary, the legal, public and private sector. Graduate Programs

Students from all over the world come to Yale Law School to deepen their understanding of the law.

Yale Law School’s graduate programs are truly global — both in the breadth of resources available through Yale Law School and in the composition of our student body. Students enjoy small class sizes and the camaraderie of graduate and J.D. students, the intimacy of a small program, and a close relationship with the Yale Law School faculty .

The Law School admits a limited number of graduate students each year to pursue studies in law beyond the first professional degree.

Graduate Degrees

  • The Master of Laws (LL.M.) program encompasses one year of full-time study. Admission is generally open only to those committed to a career in teaching law.
  • The Doctor of the Science of Law (J.S.D.) program is a select doctoral program open only to graduates of the LL.M. program at Yale Law School.
  • The Master of Studies in Law (M.S.L.)  program is for a small number of non-lawyers who wish to obtain a basic familiarity with legal thought and to explore how law relates to their discipline. It is a one-year terminal program designed for those who do not desire a professional law degree. Admission is generally open only to doctoral degree holders and doctoral candidates in fields other than law, or working journalists (with at least a bachelor's degree).
  • The Ph.D. in Law is a doctoral program offered in conjunction with Yale University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences . It is designed to prepare J.D. graduates for careers as legal scholars and teachers through coursework and the production of a substantial body of original academic research and writing. The program is only open to students who have already earned a J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school.

N.J. is adding a new requirement to graduate high school, but a huge number of kids didn’t do it last year

The number of New Jersey students who filed federal financial aid forms dropped this year, just as the state is implementing a new law that will require public high school seniors to fill out the forms in order to graduate.

The law, signed in January, requires the classes of 2025, 2026 and 2027 to fill out the federal Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA , as a requirement for getting a public high school diploma.

The form is used to determine how much federal student aid a graduate can get to attend college, and New Jersey officials want more seniors to fill it out to save money and increase the number of people getting a higher education.

But, only a little more than half of New Jersey high school seniors filled out their FAFSA forms this year.

After federal delays in producing and processing a new version of the FAFSA form caused chaos in college admissions this spring, 54.7% of New Jersey high school seniors finished the form — down 6 percentage points from last year, according to the National College Attainment Network, citing August 2 figures.

That meant 6,204 fewer New Jersey students filled out the form compared to the previous year.

The U.S. Department of Education announced last week that for most students, the forms will again be available three months later than usual.

Kim Cook, head of the nonprofit National College Attainment Network, said students would be further harmed if the problems with the forms continue this academic year.

“The unprecedented numbers we are observing in this class’s data make it clear that we can’t afford to have another delayed FAFSA,” she said. “We know that FAFSA opens the door to college; we need that door ready to walk through on-time and without complication.”

According to the network, students who did not fill out the form left about $103 million in federal Pell Grants on the table.

That number is expected to shrink significantly in New Jersey with the new graduation requirement, as schools are expected to focus on getting all students to fill out the FAFSA.

Under the pilot program, which can be renewed after three years, students can submit a waiver or speak to a school counselor to get an exemption from the graduation requirement. Undocumented students who are not eligible for federal aid but do qualify as NJ Dreamers can fill out the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application instead.

Nationally, the percentage of students finishing the forms fell to 46% from about 53% this year. For the past two years New Jersey has ranked ninth in the nation in the percentage of seniors completing the forms, said Bill DeBaun, a senior director at the National College Attainment Network.

Filling out the forms is particularly important for low-income and first generation college students with fewer resources.

“When we look at New Jersey high schools by school income level and percentage of students of color enrolled, we do see big FAFSA completion gaps,” DeBaun said.

There’s still time before the Sept. 15 deadline for this year’s high school graduates to apply for state funds for college, state officials said. New Jersey received $100,000 in federal assistance to get the word out about the FAFSA.

The Higher Education Student Assistance Authority is offering free, online one-on-one sessions with financial aid experts throughout August to answer students’ questions. Appointments are available through the authority’s website, and are also open to students who already submitted their FAFSA forms but need assistance correcting errors or providing additional information requested by the U.S. Department of Education.

Evening webinars about the forms are also available in Spanish and English.

Students must fill out the forms to see if they are eligible for federal aid as well as Tuition Aid Grants from the state. The forms are also required to see if students are eligible for the New Jersey College Promise program, which provides tuition money for students under certain income levels. Most universities and colleges require the forms to determine who receives scholarships, as well.

Under the traditional timeline, the FAFSA forms are available Oct. 1, and students and families fill them out and send them to the U.S. Department of Education, which determines how much federal aid they should receive, said Alejandro Guiral, president of the New Jersey Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

After three to five days of processing, the department usually determines what amount of federal assistance applicants will receive, and sends the forms to the state Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, known as HESAA, and the students’ chosen schools.

HESAA then determines how much state aid the student is eligible for, and notifies the school, which decides which scholarships or grants it can offer the student.

The final package — with state, federal and campus aid — was traditionally ready for students to review by January. This year, the form was not available until January for most families, and students learned what federal aid they received in mid-March. The amount of state aid they were eligible to receive wasn’t available until the beginning of May.

“They had a long time to wait,” Guiral said. “There’s been a certain percentage maybe that didn’t choose the school they wanted, maybe they went to another college that was not their first or second choice, because of the delay in accurate information about the financial aid package.”

On the new FAFSA form used this year, information from parents’ 2022 tax returns was fed into their children’s applications, although the process was poorly executed, according to a report by the U.S. Inspector General last week.

When parents do not want their income considered in a student’s application, it severely limits how much need-based aid the student would be eligible for, Guiral said. Students in such circumstances may be able to apply independently from their parents, after discussing the matter with financial aid officers.

The wait this year was far longer for students with a parent who did not have a social security number, he said. Their forms were not even ready until mid-March, shutting them out of campus-based aid that was distributed on a first-come-first-served basis.

“Keep trying,” Guiral said to students still hoping to get financial aid for the fall college semester. “The actual application really has become much more simple.” And some colleges will admit students well past the official deadlines.

Guiral’s group is advocating for the department to roll out next year’s application correctly. They are also training administrators for the 2025-2026 school year and are encouraging seniors and their families to set up their accounts with the U.S. Department of Education, so they are ready when the forms become available.

Purple Heart recipient celebrates Army promotion to LTC at Baylor Law School

Dusty turner, a west point graduate, pursuing doctorate degree at baylor university.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - A West Point graduate who earned a Purple Heart during the war in Afghanistan celebrated his promotion to lieutenant colonel in the Army with more than a 125 friends and family in attendance at Baylor Law School in Waco.

Dusty Turner, 39, rose to the rank after a 17 year military career which included eight moves, two deployments, a marriage and two kids, and an incident that left him with a traumatic brain injury after a pressure plate exploded in Afghanistan taking the life of another soldier.

Turner moved to Waco with his wife, Jill and kids Cal, 11, and Reese, 9, in 2022 from Fairfax Station, VA., where he led the development of the Army’s COVID model, which helped guide decision making and mitigate the pandemic’s impact on Army operations.

He’s now pursuing his PhD in statistics at Baylor University.

“It was very special,” Turner said. “To get a chance to do this in my career to honor my family who has been there with me all along.”

Turner was born in Herford in West Texas and graduated from Center Point High School outside of Kerrville before his appointment to West Point in 2003.

He said while it wasn’t the only reason, the 9/11 attacks definitely played a role in his commitment.

Dusty Turner

“It was certainly on my mind. I won’t say it was the reason, but I think a lot of people in my generation, that’s certainly a backdrop for military service, certainly very proud of our country and wanting to do what we could to kind of stand up and do what our country needed to do at the time,” Turner said.

Tuner served deployments in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

It was while he was a company commander overseeing around 150 soldiers in Afghanistan that his unit on patrol was targeted by an IED.

Turner was just 20 feet from the explosion, which killed a Polish soldier, and left Turner with a traumatic brain injury that required weeks of treatment in a hospital.

“It is something that helped me refocus in life,” Turner said reflecting on the moment. " It just changed my perspective on a lot of things about what’s really important in life.”

Turner’s nearly two-decades in the Army has taken him everywhere from Hawaii, where he met his wife to New York, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia and New Mexico.

The Turner Family

He says one of the most special places he’s lived is Waco where he’s found a supportive church family, amazing schools, and friends, many he met through youth sports while supporting his son in baseball and coaching his daughter in softball.

Turner’s parents traveled from Center Point, and his in-laws from Michigan, to attend the ceremony, but the rest of the faces in the crowded room were Central Texans.

“What has made this place so special is it’s a community that’s not transient,” Turner said. “People are from Waco, and they live here for a long time, and they welcomed my family so much and the fact they would come here and celebrate with me in this and to give me a chance to tell them thank you. It’s very surreal. It’s very special.”

Turner’s wife and kids helped pin his new rank in an emotional moment.

The ceremony was led by Col Rod Sturdivant (Retired) , a current Baylor professor, who met Turner at West Point when Turner was a new cadet and Sturdivant was a West Point professor.

Col. Sturdivant led a Bible study Turner attended.

Turner will return to West Point as an Academy Professor in the math department in the fall of next year.

Singapore Army Veteran and Drapers' Scholar Euan Davies Sets Course for London Post LL.M. Achievement

davies-1200-x-630-px.png

Having lived extensively in Singapore and London, Davies was accustomed to bustling city life but found solace in the serene pace and environment of Williamsburg, Virginia.

“The small community at the law school provides for a very encouraging and ‘homey’ environment that allows you to really get to know your peers that larger programs might not be able to provide,” Davies says.

Before pursuing a career in law, Davies served two years in the Singapore Army as a Combat Medical Sergeant. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Law at Queen Mary.

During his final year, he learned about the Drapers Scholarship Program, and he was inspired to take the opportunity to learn about the American legal system.

Every year, William & Mary Law School appoints a recent graduate as the Drapers Scholar, selected from alumni who have completed their degrees within the past two years. The recipient of the Drapers Scholarship is granted the opportunity to pursue further studies in law.

This scholarship is made possible thanks to the support of the Drapers Company of London, a long-standing partner of William & Mary.

Under the guidance of Professor Neal Devins, Davies found Constitutional Law particularly captivating within the rich array of courses provided by the LL.M. curriculum at William & Mary. Embracing the challenge of larger class sizes and heightened student participation, Davies actively engaged in vibrant discussions, enriching himself in the dynamic learning environment.

“I have gained a significantly better understanding of the American legal system and its role within American Society,” Davies says. “I found most interesting, the contrast between the application of British law and American law despite having common foundations. The importance of law in society cannot be understated and I gained a huge appreciation of its impact on America and the wider influence of American law internationally.”

Outside of the classroom, Davies became a member of the International Competition Team (ICT) , which gave him the opportunity to work closely with other William & Mary students while also gaining practical skills. One of his fondest memories as a member of the team is when he represented the law school at the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition in New Orleans. He enjoyed interacting with students and judges from law schools all over the United States.

Although Davies has successfully completed his mission, there were some challenges along the way to earning his LL.M. Initially, he experienced some difficulties learning how to adjust to a new academic and social environment. He had to quickly learn new social norms and adjust to the structure of the American education system while meeting the demands of rigorous coursework.

Davies says he found unwavering support from mentors, fellow students, and the law school administration.

“The law school has a great mentoring program, and J.D. students were always keen to learn and understand the various challenges that I was facing while in this new environment,” Davies says. “Dean [Brian] Wall, the head of Student Affairs, and Brenda Stone, the international programs facilitator, in particular, were always extremely helpful and contributed greatly to helping with any challenges that I faced during my time here.”

Davies highlights the development of interpersonal skills and adaptability as key takeaways from his time at William & Mary. This experience has broadened his perspective on law's role in society, emphasizing its impact both domestically and internationally.

As Davies prepares to take on new challenges in his career, he offers advice to other students who wish to pursue an LL.M. at William & Mary .

“I would advise prospective students to really seize the opportunity to work with J.D. students at every avenue,” he says. “The student body at the law school is an incredibly motivated and friendly group of individuals who will always go out of their way to assist their classmates in times of need. I learned a lot from the J.D. students, and my only regret is not having more time to meet more of them.”

After graduation, Davies plans to return to London to pursue training as a Commercial Barrister under the Lord Justice Holker Scholarship granted by Gray’s Inn.

Industry Leaders Come Together to Develop Curriculum

Berkeley, CA – August 13, 2024 – Berkeley Law, renowned for its innovative legal education and leadership in law and technology, is proud to announce the launch of the first-ever law degree with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI). Set to begin in summer 2025, the AI-focused Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree is now open for applications.

Berkeley Law has long been recognized as the nation’s leading program in IP and tech law. The introduction of the AI Law and Regulation certificate for students in the LL.M. executive track represents a major step forward in this tradition, further equipping legal professionals to navigate the complexities of AI. The program can be completed over two summers or through remote study combined with one summer on campus.

“At Berkeley Law, we are committed to leading the way in legal education by anticipating the future needs of our profession. Our AI-focused degree program is a testament to our dedication to preparing our students for the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies,” said Dean Erwin Chemerinsky. “This program underscores our commitment to innovation and excellence, ensuring our graduates are at the forefront of the legal landscape.”

“The new degree program is ideal for both international legal practitioners and U.S. attorneys seeking to future-proof their practice,” said Assistant Dean Adam Sterling. “Students will learn from faculty, practitioner-lecturers, and guest speakers on topics such as AI ethics, the fundamentals of AI technology, and current and future efforts to regulate AI, including a focus on the EU AI Act.”

The curriculum for the new certificate was designed in consultation with an advisory group of industry leaders, including:

  • Wei Chen, Chief Legal Officer, EVP, Government Affairs, Infoblox
  • Jennifer Dumas, General Counsel, Allen Institute for AI
  • Beth George, Partner, Freshfields
  • Brian Israel, General Counsel, Anthropic
  • Miriam Kim, Partner, Munger, Tolles & Olson
  • Josh Lee Kok Thong, Managing Director, Asia-Pacific, Future of Privacy Forum
  • Irene Liu, Executive in Residence, Berkeley Law and AI Advisor to California State Senate
  • Nicole Ozer, Technology and Civil Liberties Director, ACLU of Northern California
  • Karen Silverman, CEO and Founder, Cantellus Group
  • Dumitru Sliusarenco, Senior Case & Policy Officer, Meta Oversight Board
  • Hanna Steinbach, General Counsel at Harness
  • Duane Valz, Founder, Valz Legal
  • Nikki Vo, Director and Associate General Counsel, Meta
  • Jon Zieger, Co-Founder and Director of Responsible Innovation Labs

Berkeley Law’s proximity to Silicon Valley provides unparalleled access to practitioners dealing with AI-related legal issues in real-time. The AI Law and Regulation certificate will help students build core skills and knowledge in areas including data privacy, intellectual property (IP), licensing, and risk.

Available courses include Law and Governance of Artificial Intelligence, taught by Professor Colleen V. Chien — one of the top 20-cited IP and cyberlaw scholars in the U.S. One focus of her new class will be how AI is transforming the practice of law, and the opportunities AI and automation technologies offer to ameliorate or exacerbate existing inequalities in the practice of law, including the access to justice gap.

“Students will gain fluency with AI technologies and explore the ways in which law and policy are being developed and applied in order to minimize the harms and maximize the benefits offered by AI,” Chien says. “Examining a variety of governance tools, including court adjudication, legislation, regulatory frameworks, industry standards, and best practices, this course will dive deeply into the intersections of AI and human rights, civil liberties, privacy, IP, consumer protection, employment, and other laws.”

“This program will equip participants with in-depth knowledge of the ethical, regulatory, and policy challenges posed by AI,” Sterling added. “It will focus on building practice skills to help them advise and represent leading law firms, AI companies, governments, and non-profit organizations.”

Designed for working professionals, the LL.M. executive track can be completed over a calendar year with part-time online coursework and one full-time summer in Berkeley, or over two consecutive summer semesters in residence. The program attracts lawyers from over 40 countries, including those with a J.D. from the United States.

Applications for the program open on August 1, 2024. Interested candidates can email [email protected] for more information.
