Course fees - postgraduate research programs, what are the fees for postgraduate research study.
The tuition component of a graduate research degree is typically fully funded for Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian Permanent Residents by the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP) . The RTP provides eligible candidates with a fee offset scholarship for a maximum period of four years' full-time equivalent study for a doctorate by research and two years' full-time equivalent study for a Master's by research. Domestic candidates based at La Trobe or an affiliated institution also pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee each year, which helps to fund student services, facilities and amenities.
International candidates are liable for an annual tuition fee. International applicants may apply for a fee remission scholarship. More information is available on our international fees and scholarships webpage.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
A PhD is a research degree normally of three to four years duration. A thesis must demonstrate to external examiners a substantial body of knowledge at the frontier of a field of research or learning, including knowledge that constitutes an original contribution. The thesis should not exceed 80,000 words.
Applicants for the PhD will normally have completed a Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with Honours (H1 or H2A) from an Australian university or an equivalent qualification.

La Trobe University offers a range of scholarships for eligible candidates who are undertaking higher degrees by research. The Graduate Research School manages the administration of all higher degrees by research and scholarships for these degrees.
