Band 7 Sample Answer For Writing Task 2 – The Internet Is Viewed As An Excellent Means Of Communication
The internet has become an integral part of modern communication, revolutionizing the way individuals connect and share information. Proponents argue that it serves as a powerful catalyst for globalization, enabling instantaneous communication and breaking down geographical barriers. Social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, have transformed into virtual meeting places where people from diverse backgrounds can share their thoughts and experiences.
Critics argue that the brevity and informality of online communication, characterized by the use of emojis and abbreviations, may lead to a degradation of language proficiency. The speed and convenience of digital communication might encourage impulsive responses, sacrificing the depth and thoughtfulness inherent in face-to-face interactions.
While the speed of online communication is advantageous, we must not lose sight of the importance of depth and nuance in our interactions. Striking a balance between the efficiency of digital communication and the richness of traditional forms is crucial for maintaining robust communication skills.
To illustrate, consider the rise of remote work facilitated by digital communication tools. While remote collaboration has become more accessible, there is a growing recognition of the importance of periodic face-to-face meetings. These in-person interactions allow for a depth of communication that may be challenging to achieve solely through emails or video calls.
In conclusion, while the internet undeniably enhances communication by fostering global connectivity, there are valid concerns about its potential to erode traditional communication skills. Striking a balance between the efficiency of online communication and the depth of face-to-face interactions is imperative for navigating the evolving landscape of communication in the digital age.
1. Unprecedented: Never done or known before; without previous example.
Example: The rapid development of technology in recent years is unprecedented, transforming various aspects of our daily lives.
2. Degradation: The condition or process of deteriorating or being reduced to a lower rank or level.
Example: The degradation of the environment due to pollution is a pressing global concern.
3. Inherent: Existing as a natural or essential part of something.
Example: The risks inherent in the experimental procedure were carefully considered before its implementation.
4. Impulsive: Acting or done without forethought; acting on sudden desires or instincts.
Example: Her impulsive decision to quit her job without a backup plan led to unforeseen challenges.
5. Robust: Strong and healthy; vigorous and full of health.
Example: A robust immune system is essential for resisting various illnesses and infections.
Band 8 Sample Answer For Writing Task 2 – The Internet Is Viewed As An Excellent Means Of Communication
The internet, often celebrated for its transformative impact on communication, has reshaped the way people connect and share information globally. Advocates underscore its role in democratizing communication, providing a platform for diverse voices and breaking down geographical barriers. Social media platforms, blogs, and online forums have become virtual town squares, allowing individuals to express their ideas and engage in conversations on a scale never seen before.
However, as the internet continues to shape the landscape of communication, concerns have arisen regarding its potential adverse effects on language proficiency and the depth of discourse. Critics argue that the brevity and informality of online communication, exemplified by platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, may contribute to a decline in language richness. The prevalence of emojis and abbreviations, while enhancing efficiency, can compromise the nuanced expression of thoughts and emotions.
In my perspective, the internet serves as a powerful facilitator of communication but requires a thoughtful approach. While digital platforms offer unparalleled speed and convenience, it is crucial to recognize the value of depth in communication. The challenge lies in preserving the art of meaningful conversation while embracing the benefits of technological advancements.
Consider the example of educational institutions incorporating online learning platforms. While these platforms enhance accessibility to education, there is a growing acknowledgment of the need for interactive discussions and face-to-face sessions to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. It highlights the importance of a balanced approach that leverages the advantages of digital communication while recognizing its limitations.
In conclusion, the internet has undeniably transformed communication, providing new avenues for expression and connection. However, a conscientious effort is required to safeguard the richness of language and depth of discourse in the face of evolving digital communication methods.
1. Democratizing: Making something accessible to all people; bringing democracy to a process or system.
Example: The internet has played a key role in democratizing access to information, allowing people from diverse backgrounds to participate in the global conversation.
2. Brevity: The quality of being brief or concise; expressing much in few words.
Example: The journalist’s writing style is characterized by brevity, conveying complex ideas in succinct sentences.
3. Nuanced: Characterized by subtle differences or distinctions; having a nuanced understanding involves recognizing and appreciating fine details.
Example: The politician provided a nuanced response to the question, considering multiple perspectives before giving an answer.
4. Conscientious: Wishing to do one’s work or duty well and thoroughly; diligent.
Example: The conscientious student always completes assignments on time and pays attention to detail.
5. Comprehensive: Including or dealing with all or nearly all elements or aspects; thorough.
Example: The research paper provided a comprehensive analysis of the historical events, covering various angles and perspectives.

Band 9 Sample Answer For Writing Task 2 – The Internet Is Viewed As An Excellent Means Of Communication
The advent of the internet has ushered in a new era of communication, fundamentally altering the way individuals interact and share information. Its impact is profound, enabling unprecedented global connectivity and fostering a virtual environment where ideas can be exchanged at an unparalleled speed. Proponents extol the internet’s ability to democratize communication, giving voice to diverse perspectives and transcending geographical constraints.
However, amidst the celebration of the internet’s transformative power, questions loom about its potential consequences on the depth and richness of human communication. Critics argue that the brevity and informality inherent in digital interactions, epitomized by platforms like TikTok and Twitter, may contribute to a subtle erosion of language proficiency. The rise of visual communication, including emojis and memes, challenges traditional notions of expression, prompting concerns about the nuanced nature of conversations.
In my considered opinion, navigating the digital landscape requires a nuanced approach. The internet, with its efficiency and immediacy, undoubtedly enhances communication, but it necessitates a conscious effort to preserve the depth of discourse. Balancing the benefits of rapid connectivity with a commitment to meaningful and nuanced communication is essential for individuals to thrive in this evolving communication paradigm.
Consider the example of professional collaborations in the corporate world. While digital platforms facilitate quick exchanges of information, successful teams recognize the importance of periodic face-to-face meetings for fostering deeper connections and understanding. It exemplifies the need for a holistic approach that integrates the advantages of digital communication with the irreplaceable depth offered by traditional, in-person interactions.
In conclusion, the internet is a powerful force reshaping the fabric of human communication. Embracing its advantages while safeguarding the richness of language and depth of discourse demands a conscious and balanced approach, ensuring that the digital age enhances, rather than diminishes, the art of meaningful conversation.
1. Ushered: To cause or mark the start of something new; to lead or guide.
Example: The invention of the smartphone ushered in a new era of mobile communication.
2. Profound: Having deep meaning or significance; intense or penetrating.
Example: The scientist made a profound discovery that revolutionized our understanding of the universe.
3. Epitomized: To serve as a perfect example or representation of something.
Example: The historic speech by Martin Luther King Jr. epitomized the ideals of the civil rights movement.
4. Conscious: Having an awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings, sensations, or surroundings; mentally perceptive or alert.
Example: After practicing mindfulness meditation, she became more conscious of her thoughts and emotions throughout the day.
5. Holistic: Dealing with or considering the whole system or entity rather than focusing on individual parts.
Example: Holistic medicine emphasizes the importance of treating the entire person, including their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Model Essay 1
The rapid expansion of the internet and proliferation of social media platforms have transformed global communication, engendering both expansive benefits and significant risks. While I assert that these changes are largely beneficial, this essay will explore both the enhanced connectivity and the associated challenges of misinformation, proposing that education and regulation are essential for mitigating the negative impacts.
Social media transcends traditional communication barriers, such as the slow pace of letter delivery, by enabling instant global interactions through emails, tweets, and messages. This immediate connectivity enhances personal relationships and fosters international cooperation. For instance, during crises like natural disasters, social media platforms like Twitter prove crucial for quickly sharing information and coordinating relief efforts, thereby playing a key role in emergency response and recovery. This function highlights social media's transformative impact on how we connect and collaborate across distances.
However, social media's engaging features, such as vast reach and anonymity, contribute to its drawbacks by facilitating the spread of misinformation. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the rapid circulation of unverified information through these platforms created widespread confusion and posed serious public health risks. Additionally, the algorithms that drive content curation on these platforms tend to prioritize user engagement over accuracy, promoting sensationalist material that may not be truthful, thereby compounding the problem. This dynamic highlights the need for careful management and regulation of social media to mitigate its negative impacts while preserving its benefits.
Despite these concerns, I contend that the evolution of communication through social media is fundamentally positive. Introducing comprehensive digital literacy programs in schools would empower young users to critically evaluate online content and recognize biased information. Such initiatives, supported by policy changes that hold digital platforms accountable for content management, can significantly reduce the impact of misinformation.
In conclusion, while social media presents new challenges in the form of misinformation and rapid dissemination of harmful content, these issues can be addressed through education and regulatory reforms.
Model Essay 2
The invention and the prevalence of social media have influenced how individuals communicate with others in this contemporary society. While some people believe that this is a positive change, others argue that there are negative impacts of social media. I firmly believe that while there are cons of social media as well as pros, we can mitigate it through education.
One of the advantages of using social media is being able to communicate with anyone in the world without any delays. In doing so, users can send different types of information, including texts, images, videos and emojis. This is a substantial development compared to letters, which is an old way of communication, as they took few months to be sent overseas and allowed only papers and small items to be put in the envelopes. Moreover, individuals can even share images and videos that are posted by other users on social media. My friend and I often send hilarious reels to each other on Instagram to help each other relieve stresses. This exemplifies that social media allows users to keep communicating with their friends and families even if they do not have any recent updates.
While there are advantages of social media, it also has negative effects on individuals, such as misinformation. Since all individuals can share information without expertise in the technological field, a lot of fake posts and videos can be observed on social media. For instance, many users pretended to be citizens of Ukraine or Russia when the war between these two countries broke out, spreading incorrect update about the war. Furthermore, once fake information is posted on social media, it can be shared unintentionally by other users who believe it to be true, thus allowing it to spread among users quickly.
From my point of view, social media is a positive development. The negative aspects of social media are the undeniable facts; however, they can be mitigated by encouraging schools and parents to educate their kids about possible dangers on social media before letting their children use it.
In conclusion, social media holds both positive and negative effects on users. However, it should be viewed as a positive development, considering how education can be an effective way to mitigate its negative impacts.

The Impact of the Internet on Society: A Global Perspective
- Manuel Castells archive page
Provided by BBVA
The Internet is the decisive technology of the Information Age, and with the explosion of wireless communication in the early twenty-first century, we can say that humankind is now almost entirely connected, albeit with great levels of inequality in bandwidth, efficiency, and price.
People, companies, and institutions feel the depth of this technological change, but the speed and scope of the transformation has triggered all manner of utopian and dystopian perceptions that, when examined closely through methodologically rigorous empirical research, turn out not to be accurate. For instance, media often report that intense use of the Internet increases the risk of isolation, alienation, and withdrawal from society, but available evidence shows that the Internet neither isolates people nor reduces their sociability; it actually increases sociability, civic engagement, and the intensity of family and friendship relationships, in all cultures.
Our current “network society” is a product of the digital revolution and some major sociocultural changes. One of these is the rise of the “Me-centered society,” marked by an increased focus on individual growth and a decline in community understood in terms of space, work, family, and ascription in general. But individuation does not mean isolation, or the end of community. Instead, social relationships are being reconstructed on the basis of individual interests, values, and projects. Community is formed through individuals’ quests for like-minded people in a process that combines online interaction with offline interaction, cyberspace, and the local space.

Globally, time spent on social networking sites surpassed time spent on e-mail in November 2007, and the number of social networking users surpassed the number of e-mail users in July 2009. Today, social networking sites are the preferred platforms for all kinds of activities, both business and personal, and sociability has dramatically increased — but it is a different kind of sociability. Most Facebook users visit the site daily, and they connect on multiple dimensions, but only on the dimensions they choose. The virtual life is becoming more social than the physical life, but it is less a virtual reality than a real virtuality, facilitating real-life work and urban living.
Because people are increasingly at ease in the Web’s multidimensionality, marketers, government, and civil society are migrating massively to the networks people construct by themselves and for themselves. At root, social-networking entrepreneurs are really selling spaces in which people can freely and autonomously construct their lives. Sites that attempt to impede free communication are soon abandoned by many users in favor of friendlier and less restricted spaces.
Perhaps the most telling expression of this new freedom is the Internet’s transformation of sociopolitical practices. Messages no longer flow solely from the few to the many, with little interactivity. Now, messages also flow from the many to the many, multimodally and interactively. By disintermediating government and corporate control of communication, horizontal communication networks have created a new landscape of social and political change.
Networked social movements have been particularly active since 2010, notably in the Arab revolutions against dictatorships and the protests against the management of the financial crisis. Online and particularly wireless communication has helped social movements pose more of a challenge to state power.
The Internet and the Web constitute the technological infrastructure of the global network society, and the understanding of their logic is a key field of research. It is only scholarly research that will enable us to cut through the myths surrounding this digital communication technology that is already a second skin for young people, yet continues to feed the fears and the fantasies of those who are still in charge of a society that they barely understand.

Communication Today
Internet as a Medium of Communication in Modern Society
Marshall Stephen David * Dr. H.K. Mariswamy**
Introduction
The advent of new information and communication technologies has translated the global village concept of Marshall McLuhan into a reality. New media have created ‘information society’ and brought about the globalization of information resources and services. With the exponential growth in the emergent media technology including the Internet, the print, broadcast, telecommunications, and computer communication have formed the new domains in order to create the converged media world in general and global consumption of goods and services in particular. The new media are technology oriented channels of communication which facilitate ‘user-to-user’ interactivity in contemporary society. The emergence of Internet replaced the ‘one-to-many’ model of traditional mass communication with the possibility of the ‘many-to-many’ web of communication. Internet is also one of the more important tools of interactive communication in modern society. Interactivity has become a key term for number of new media use options evolving from the rapid dissemination of Internet access point, the digitalization of the media and media convergence. Internet has also become an important medium of communication in modern society.
Concept of Internet
The Internet is a massive network of communication networks which has changed the way citizens around the world live, learn, work, earn and communicate. The Internet is also known as the ‘NET’ which is a network of networks of computer databases and information services. Internet is also known as the world without bars-neither of time, space nor language. Its worldwide reach and connection to any type of computer have broken the boundaries of communication.
An online popular encyclopedia from the Internet, Wikipedia explains what Internet means and what it is: “The Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It is a “network of networks” that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked web pages and other resources of the World Wide Web (WWW)”.
According to DiMaggio, Hargittain, Neuman, and Robinson (2001:03), the Internet is defined as the ‘electronic network of networks that links people and information through computers and other digital devices allowing person-to-person communication and information retrieval.’ The advent of the computer and the Internet has brought a whole new world in terms of gathering, disseminating, creating, and criticizing information and communicating with people. The multimedia available over the Internet is surprisingly varied. The Internet is the latest revolution in communication technology.
Evolution of Internet
Access of Internet is on the rise. Internet brings a large quantity of comprehensive information to public domain. Internet has become the in-thing of education. Academic life involves using computers with Internet. Students use Internet to gain more comprehensive information. It is the vital link for quick reference for scholars as well as for all. Internet’s use could be optimized to get the best for students. Internet basically utilizes the convergence of computers and communication technologies. Both these technologies are making strides since 1970’s in an unprecedented way.
The World Wide Web being part of Internet was a project conceived in 1989 at the CERN high-energy laboratory in Europe. In 1991 the Internet was released to public. The formal birth of Internet was registered, when Internet society was chartered on 1992. The goal was to allow scientists and employees around the world to conveniently share research and ideas. Of course the World Wide Web has evolved into something much more than a research tool. With the introduction of graphical web browsers, it has become a communication medium for much wider, global audience. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most important developments in the history of the human communication, as important as the invention of Gutenberg’s Printing Press.
The Internet became popular in the early 1990’s. The United States is the motherland of Internet revolution. The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) played a major role in the creation of Information Processing Technology Office (IPTO) which had networked country-wide radar systems together for the first time. Leonard Kleinrock, Licklider and other scientists conducted monumental research in Internet revolution.
The CERN, a pan European organization for particle research publicized the World Wide Web project in 1991. It was invented by English scientist Tim Bernes Lee in 1989. It was eventually replaced in popularity by the Mosaic web browser. In about one decade, the Internet successfully accommodated the majority of previously existing public computer networks. During the 1990’s, Internet grew by 100 percent. The information and computer scientists described the Internet as a ‘prime example of a large-scale, highly engineered, yet highly complex system, according to Wikipedia (2011:06).
India has emerged as an information super power in the world. It continues to be one of the fastest growing major telecom markets in the world. The Government of India have brought about sweeping reforms over the last two decades. The state-owned Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) launched Internet services in India in 1995. In November 1998, the Government ended VSNL’s monopoly and privatized the Internet services in India. There are about 200 operational ISPs in the country according to the latest statistics. According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India, the low cost of broadband has helped increase Internet usage in the country.
Despite the large number of providers, 10% of the ISPs have 90% of the subscribers. The state owned BSNL and MTNL have grown rapidly to hold first and second place in terms of subscribers. The remarkable expansion of cyber cafes has played a crucial role in fueling Internet revolution in India. There are about 60% of users who regularly access the Internet via the country’s more than 10,000 cyber cafes. The number of broadband subscribers is also remarkably increasing in the country according to Broadband Market Services (2011:01).
Internet as a Medium of Communication
As of now, many people log on the web and search for information instead of going to the newspaper or television to get information. As the number of people who use the Internet is growing, most people now accept that Internet as a revolutionary new medium that has changed the life styles remarkably.
The Internet has several distinctive features. First, the Internet is an active and interactive medium. In other words, the Internet is a two way medium. The person who uses the Internet is called as the ‘user’, not a viewer or listener. ‘User’ suggests activeness and controllability. Internet users can create information by themselves or actively search and reach the information on the web. Further, people evaluate the given information and set forth their view so that other people can see them.
Interaction with other users is another feature of interactivity of the Internet. Opinions and views flow freely on the web. Even though television viewers can watch television actively by means of choosing a channel, television watching is still a passive activity when compared to Internet use.
Internet has proved to be one of the most innovative inventions for us. It has made its presence felt in every sphere of our life, be it economy, society, health care, spirituality, etc. Prominent among its benefits is the impact it has had on the education sector. Students can now gain access to innumerable research papers, apart from getting latest updates in the field of science and technology.
Internet has created new challenges for the society and most threatening among these is the impact it has had on the young generation of users including the children, adolescents and youth. Internet addiction has been recognized as a disorder in many countries, and rehabilitation centers have been created to help people to get over it. According to the empirical evidence, a large proportion of Internet addicts are youngsters, who are extremely vulnerable to its ill-effects. There are several advantages and disadvantages of Internet.
In reality, the Internet exists within a natural world where everything is transparent. Scholars have considered Internet as a sprawling global city that never sleeps. The Internet allows greater flexibility in working hours and location, especially with the spread of unmetered high-speed connections and web applications. The Internet can now be accessed almost anywhere by numerous means, especially through mobile Internet devices.
The Internet is the fastest way to spread information to a vast number of people simultaneously across the globe. The low cost and nearly instantaneous sharing of ideas, knowledge and skills has made collaborative work dramatically easier, with the help of collaborative software. Mobile phones, data cards, handheld game consoles and cellular routers allow users to connect to the Internet from anywhere.
The Internet allows the computer users to remotely access other computers and information sources easily, wherever they may be across the world. There are innovative ways and means of Internet browsing. E-mail is an important communications service available on the Internet. The Internet e-mail can be sent or received irrespective of the space and time by the modern Internet users even with little knowledge of computers.
The Internet telephoning is another common communication service made possible by the creation of the Internet. The Voice-over- Internet Protocol is mostly free of cost or cheaper especially over long distances. File sharing is an example of transferring large amounts of data across the Internet. A computer file can be uploaded to the website and downloaded by the users.
The webcams are viewed as even lower-budget extension of video phenomenon. Video chat rooms and video conferencing are also popular with many users.
“There are no official censors, no bosses, no board of directors, no stock holders or stake holders and other constraints in Internet browsing,” according to Leon and Leon (2000:05).
Importance of Internet
The rise of new media including the Internet has increased the communication between people all over the world. The Internet has enabled the people to express themselves through blogs, websites, pictures and other user-generated media. The evolution of Internet has brought about the globalization of education, business, management, development and other processes. The Internet culture has explored unknown paths and has led to overall development of the mankind. The Internet technology has also enhanced the information access and utility to various sections of the society.
As Kubey (2000:04) argued, the Internet as new media technology may enhance and help our lives or do harmful things to people. The Internet now is becoming an important research topic in various fields, including communication, sociology, psychology, public health, political science, education, computer science and so on. Studies about the Internet started from investigating who had Internet access. Researchers then moved to investigate actual Internet use, including how much time people spend on the Internet and what they are doing.
The Internet is a global, liberally available series of interconnected information sources with the aid of computer networks that transmit data in the form of video, audio, images, text, computer program files, or in other formats. It is amusing to use Internet for trade, education, communication, advertising and entertainment. Services like electronic mail, online chat, forums, blogs, transfer of content (data or programs), and the interlinked web pages between millions of smaller domestic, professional, academic, religious, entertainment, business, medical, political and government servers benefits the user.
Internet opens opportunities for users by bringing down the barriers of distance, time and cost. It is one medium where one can stay anonymous, or be faceless, voiceless, and still communicate with text or graphic representation. One can have control over how much or how little one would reveal about themselves as communicators through the Internet.
Many scholars in various fields, such as education, psychology and sociology, have studied the impact of the Internet on people and society and reported the advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet. The children, adolescents, women and other sections of the society are affected by the Internet both positively and negatively in modern society. According to the latest Internet survey, about 900 million people worldwide were online. The studies have also revealed that all most all educational institutions in the world have Internet access regardless of level, region, or poverty concentration. As Internet use among the users is dramatically rising, the scholars need to know what impact the Internet has on the community of users as a medium of communication in modern society.

Impact of Technology on Communication Essay
Introduction, advancement of technology in communication, media technology and online communication, the impacts of mobile phone on communication, reference list.
The realm of technology is ever-changing. New advances in applied science have forever transformed the way people interact. Exploring the impact of technology on communication and debating whether people connect with others differently seems to be the topic of the day.
Technology has allowed people to keep in touch no matter the distance. One is able to communicate 24 hours around the clock, seven days a week, 365 days on an interpersonal level.
What are the real impacts of technology on communication? How do electronics mediate and change the ways in which humans interact? How has the emergence of the Internet, mobile phones, and social networks affected society and businesses?
In order to reveal the importance of technology in communication, the essay tries to find answers to these questions. It explores how everything has changed over the years and discusses the connection between technology and communication.
To begin this examination and find answers to these questions, we begin by defining media and communication and outlining the stages of technological advancement from old age to the present day in the field of communication. The paper will highlight the use of the Internet, newspapers, radio, and other media, but it mostly dwells on the use of mobile telephony.
Communication is “the imparting or exchange of information by speaking, writing or using some other medium” (Daniel & Rod, 2011). On the other hand, media is defined as “the main means of mass communication (television, radio, and newspapers) regarded collectively.”
Technology has changed everything in the modern society. The way we communicate has been revolutionized by the advancement of new innovations in the telecommunication sector. Connecting with other people with ease is more feasible in today’s world, and this is due to speed.
Several centuries ago, books and newspapers reigned as the only choice of communication. Then later, innovators brought the radio and television before innovation was taken a notch higher with the coming of the personal computer (Johnson, 1997, p.3).
With every new innovation, the reliance on books and newspapers as the mass medium of communication continued to reduce. With time, human culture has come to understand the power and the mechanisms involved in technology and invention. In today’s world, information has permeated the cycles of change and development.
The world today, past and present, can be studied at ease with the growing information technology. Technology has advanced with sheer velocity allowing different media to shape our thinking and habits. The people who were born during the television era thought that it was the climax of innovation, but they suddenly found themselves acclimating to a new medium, the World Wide Web.
Every time a new medium rolls out, the perceptions towards the previous media you were used to change (Johnson, 1997 p5). Technology proved to be powerful in the sense that no human being can predict what will change and what won’t with certainty.
The irony of it all is the fact that the influence of technology extends beyond generations to come. It is with no doubt that technology has changed the lives of human beings; information and entertainment are being received in a more convenient way.
The innovation of having a conversation using a device called the telephone changed everything in communication. This became magical, and one couldn’t believe such innovation would exist (Tofts, 1997, p.40).
With the emergence of new media technologies, consumers have been empowered to ‘filter’ the information they want to receive. This allows them to have a choice of which news to watch or what information to listen to (Palmer, 2003, p.161).
Media consumption has been made an engaging experience with marketers studying the preferences of the consumers in order to reflect broader social changes in society. In today’s world, the computer is seen as a multi-purpose machine with work and leisure functions, therefore, creating more value.
The rise of the Internet has also made it possible to have virtual offices where the user can work from home or any convenient location. The flow of information from different media has greatly changed the social structures of society at different levels (Barry, 1999).
Digital media has enabled news and event to be channeled in real-time. The combination of the Internet and commerce has given birth to e-commerce sites providing huge potential for marketers to reach out to virtual communities.
In the world today, there are numerous media screens within our surroundings. This ranges from the television sets in our houses, computer monitors at the office, mobile phones and MP3 players in our pockets and handbag.
Even when shopping or waiting to board a plane, you’re most probably staring at screens with entertainment media (Soukup, 2008, p.5). Heavy marketing has been adopted by producers of mobile technologies targeting consumers who possess mobile phones with picture and video capacity (Goggin, 2006, p.170).
Media texts producers have termed mobile media as a “third screen,” a device that consumers carry around with much ease. Unlike television screens, broader communication networks have been integrated into personal computers and mobile phones (Goggin, 2006, p.9).
Train, buses, and airplanes have been dominated by mobile screens providing passengers with entertainment as well as other media content, especially advertisements (Caron & Carona, 2007, p.17). With a lot of commercial media content, the preferences of people change in their everyday lives.
The world of popular media has become chaotic, with hundreds of television channels to choose from, thousands of songs ready for download, and not forgetting millions of web pages to surf.
The emergence of social media like Facebook and Twitter has enabled people to manage interactions and relationships with many friends. Technologies have impacted interpersonal communication enabling people to interact more often than before.
In addition to reducing the distance between people, online communication with tools like Facebook and Twitter enables people to keep track of their contacts with friends and are more aware of the last time they interacted with them. Online communication now incorporates more than one mode of contact, including text, voice, and body language.
A mobile phone is a device that has always been seen as connecting people who are far apart, thus overcoming the geographical distance between them. The number of mobile phone users has continued to increase substantially. The mobile phone has been integrated as part of people’s lives in the sense that it’s available and easy to use, keeping us connected to our families, friends, and business people (Ling, 2004, p.21-24).
The how and when the way we use our mobile phones impacts our communication not only with those we’re communicating with but also with the people within our proximity. At this point, it is paramount to note the changes that have taken place and that have allowed the adoption of mobile phones. The tremendous proliferation of this device has drastically changed the traditional communication model.
Who are the users of mobile phones, and for what purposes do they use them? Has there been any change in the way mobile phone facilitates communication? How has the face to face interaction been affected by mobile calls? Has mobile communication enhanced relationships?
These are some of the questions that arise when we try to fathom the way communication has affected our personal and professional lives. There are sentiments that mobile phones have reduced humans to emotionless beings.
There is no doubt that the revolution brought about the use of mobile phones in the way we communicate. There have been different perceptions among individuals and social levels in society in regard to mobile usage.
When we had fixed telephone lines that were put in a booth, telephones were seen as business tools only and were placed in a fixed, quiet environment. There was restriction when it came to teenagers using these phones (Agar, 2003). The ‘birth’ of mobile phones brought changes, and phone calls became a habit to many irrespective of age or location.
Today, people can use mobile phones wherever they are in private or in public. People have been addicted to their mobile phones more than any other gadget known to man, with the device remaining on throughout. Its portability enables people to carry it wherever they go (Castells, 1996).
A personal virtual network has been created whereby users can be available at all times to communicate with friends, family, and colleagues. The geographical barrier has been destroyed, making people feel close to one another, and the face to face communication has been rendered rather less important with this mediated communication (Richard, 2004, p.22).
Meetings and briefings have become obsolete, with communication being mediated by a computer or a phone. Mobile SMS (short messaging service) service and the Internet has become the preferable communication channels for most teenagers and young people all over the world (Plant, 2000, p.23).
There are places where mobile phones have become taboo devices, places like churches and crucial corporate meetings. At such places, the mobile ring is seen as a nuisance. In other scenarios, it is seen as a destructive device by acting as a third party and especially for dating couples who want to have a private conversation.
Any phone ring is seen as an ‘intruder,’ and this harms the relationship between the partners (Plant, 2000, p.29). In his research, Plant observes that there are those people who use mobile as ’a means of managing privacy where calls are carefully selected’. He categorizes this group of people as ‘hedgehogs.’
The other category is those people who use mobile phones as the key central part of their life. They become so attached to the device and cannot do without it. Plant referred to this group as ‘fox.’ They are regular users who need to feel connected with their families and friend. Their life will be dreadful if they lack the device (2000, p.32).
Telephones have promoted the use of text messaging and modernization since it’s allowing people to communicate more both verbally and by texting in a more convenient and efficient way. SMS has made communication to be more immediate, and users can customize the message at ease with the various applications installed on their mobiles (Richard, 2004, p. 100).
The advanced phones have email support as well as multimedia messages making chatting become a lifestyle for many who conduct business and those initiating intimate communication. It has emerged that SMS has made people become more united.
Users have developed abbreviated messages, which are now universally accepted as an appropriate language. The initial purpose of the phone to make calls has even lost taste with many people, especially the young generation.
According to Reid &Reid, more than 85% of teenagers prefer texting to talking on their mobile usage (Reid & Reid, 2004, p.1). There is ease of communication when it comes to texting in the sense that some formalities are eliminated, making communication more personal.
Texting has helped introverts who may lack the skills to have phone conversations allowing them to express their true self to other people leading to greater understanding and stronger relationships (Reid & Reid, 2004, p.8).
The use of mobile technology has affected the personalities of people to a great extent. Today, more people are hiding their feelings and whereabouts behind mobile phones, and this has raised suspicions among families, friends, and couples.
People go through text messages of others just to find out more about the individual who might even have no clue about what is happening. Contrary to this, most people believe that mobile is so crucial in enhancing the relationship between people no matter the distance and that it bonds us together more than it separates us (Plant, 2000, p.58).
The usage of mobile phones by children and teenagers has changed the way parents bring up their kids. Parenting has really changed as parents try to increase their surveillance and monitor their children’s mobile usage.
Their concern is to know who communicates with their kind and the kind of conversations they normally have. They are worried about the kind of social network the children create in their contact lists.
With the emergence of virtual communities, the influence of mobile phones has spilled over and affects parenting in general. Nonetheless, the primary purpose of mobile phones to facilitate communication has not changed.
There is no doubt that technology has changed the way humans communicate. Great impacts can be seen in the way communication has changed the social structures of our society at all levels. Even in years to come, technology remains the driving force of the way people interact.
The advancement of technology ensures that communication is quicker and that more people remain connected. There has been an evolution in interpersonal skills with the advancement of technology, and users should always be keen on adapting to new ways of communication.
Technology has continually brought new methods of communication leading to the expansion of mediated communication. The reality of having one message shared across a huge audience (mass communication) is now with us. A situation where neither time nor geography can limit the accessibility of information.
We have seen the merging together of newspapers and books with computer technology so that the frequency and ease of reporting information and advertisements can be increased. The exposure of both individuals and society to mediated communication has therefore affected our daily lives, particularly in our culture and the way we communicate.

Band 4+: The internet is viewed as an excellent means of communication by many. However, there are some who would argue that it is actually destroying our communication skills. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
In this technological epoch, humans are cannot imagine their life without internet. The majority of the uses select internet for contact purpose and this trend is increasing day-by-day, while, other are not favor of this trend because it is demolished conversation skills, however, this stance will explain both prospective with reasons and examples.
Begin with, talking with digital device have numerous benefits. The most preponderant one is, reduce hesitation and individuals are easily represented their point of view. Moreover, it is not only give an opportunity to commute with anyone without any disturbance but also save time. For example “WhatsApp” is the best intelligence app, which has used by all around the world and user also delighted by its affective services.
Controversial side, there have few pitfalls of this trend. The most iron fist is, social interaction and communication skills are decreasing by this phenomenon. Results, it declines vital inner strength among individuals such as confidence to face the society, reduce bonding with relationships and enhance the disrespects. For instance, ‘Hindustan Time’ newspaper reveals that, nowadays children are less respectful and comfortable with their relatives as compared to the past due to the fact they are not usually interact with their known one’s, and they never know, in which way they are communicated with distinct relations.
To conclude, although, internet have quite fruitful results, yet, proponents should pay concern on its threads owing to the fact that I reckon that it is deeply destroyed cultures and manners and interaction with community.l

Essay#64 | The Internet
Ielts writing tip.
It is particularly important in IELTS writing task 2 to display clear thinking and organization. You should go through the processes you have been practising, taking notes and organizing your writing but in addition you should remember to:
- have a clear introduction telling the reader briefly what areas you are going to cover;
- make it clear which side of an argument you are presenting (use clear linking expressions such as ‘On the one hand … On the other hand’) and make sure you do not mix two sides of an argument in the same paragraph;
- give examples clearly (choose good examples which illustrate your argument when you take notes, and when you write introduce them with phrases such as ‘We can see an example of this … ’);
- make it clear when you are giving your own opinion (use expressions such as ‘in my view … ’);
- give a clear conclusion which relates your argument back to the original question/s and summarises your opinion
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
It is generally believed that the Internet is an excellent means of communication but some people suggest that it may not be the best place to find information.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Model answer.
Using the Internet has become a normal part of everyday life for many people. They use it to book airline tickets, or to access news about world events, or to follow the fortunes of their favorite football club. Millions of people across the world belong to social networking groups where they keep in touch with their friends and if they live away from them, their family. In my opinion, these are all good ways to use the Internet.
When it comes to finding out information there are some very good sites where it is possible to check, for example, someone’s biographical details or statistics about global warming. However, information from the Internet should be used with caution, because although there are many reliable sites, such as academic journals and well-known newspapers, there are also unreliable ones, so it is important to check where the information originates from before using it.
Some students use websites that offer ready-made assignments. This is not a good idea, even if you ignore the fact that it is cheating, because such websites may contain factual errors or biased views. In a recent case, a student found herself in serious trouble when she submitted an essay from one of these sites only to discover that it was about Austria, not Australia, but had an error in the title.
Nevertheless, it is nowadays possible for people all over the world to study or do business on an equal footing, in a way that was unimaginable only a few years ago. On the whole, I believe that the Internet is an excellent way both to communicate and to find information, as long as it is used intelligently.
