Illiteracy has traditionally been viewed as largely a third world problem. However, it is becoming apparent that in countries such as the USA and Australia, illiteracy rate is on the increase. Discuss possible causes for this and its effect on society.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

The problem of illiteracy has been considered more common in poor developing countries. However, in recent years, there has been an increasing number of people in developed countries who are unable to read and write. In this essay, I examine the potential causes and implications out of such phenomenon.

Although there are many factors causing the rise in illiteracy rate in western countries, financial reason may be one of the most influential. Firstly, the global financial crisis, which resulted in poor economic conditions in western countries, may force young people to shorten or even terminate their schooling years. The unprecedented hikes in tuition fees further exert financial pressures to these people. Along with the increasing cost of living, it is likely that these people quit studies to enter the workforce. They remain poorly educated.

Without adequate literacy, these people will be unemployed or underemployed. For this reason, it can be detrimental to society in several ways. From a social viewpoint, unemployed people are more prone to engage in criminal acts such as robbery, in order to ease their financial problems. In addition, unemployed people are often low in morale and are more susceptible to depressions. Furthermore, if these young people had studied, they would have been employed in a proper job. Thus, from a financial perspective, government are losing potential tax revenue that could have been used to improve public infrastructure for the betterment of society.

In conclusion, the issue of rising illiteracy rate has to be addressed urgently in order to prevent or curtail those negative consequences impacting the western societies.

Despite better access to education, many adults today still cannot read or write.

In what ways are they disadvantaged due to their illiteracy? What can governments do to help them?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Model Answer:

Despite free-education offerings from the state, significant advancements in education and better literacy rates worldwide, many adults continue to face the challenge of illiteracy. This essay will explore the various ways in which adults are disadvantaged due to their inability to read or write and discuss potential government initiatives to assist them.

Illiteracy imposes severe limitations on individuals in their daily lives. Firstly, illiterate adults face significant challenges in accessing information. They are unable to read newspapers, books, or even basic written instructions, which hinders their ability to make informed decisions and stay updated on current affairs. Additionally, illiteracy can lead to limited employment opportunities, as many jobs require basic reading and writing skills. This often results in lower-paying jobs or unemployment, contributing to financial instability and perpetuating the cycle of poverty. In the digital age, illiterate individuals face further disadvantages. The widespread use of technology and the internet has transformed the way information is accessed and communicated. However, those who are unable to navigate digital platforms due to illiteracy are excluded from online resources, e-commerce, and digital communication tools.

Governments can play a crucial role in addressing adult illiteracy through targeted initiatives. Firstly, the state can invest in comprehensive adult literacy programmes that provide basic reading and writing skills to individuals who missed out on formal education. Furthermore, governments can promote adult literacy by creating supportive environments. This can be achieved through partnerships with NGOs, community organizations, and businesses to establish adult learning centres and vocational training programmes. These initiatives not only address the immediate literacy needs but also equip individuals with practical skills that enhance their economic prospects.

In conclusion, the disadvantages faced by illiterate adults are numerous and far-reaching. Their limited access to information reduced employment opportunities, and exclusion from the digital world hinder their personal, social, and economic development. However, through targeted government interventions, such as adult literacy programmes, vocational training, and community partnerships, the cycle of illiteracy can be broken.

IELTS Bar Chart: Illiteracy Rates

The bar chart shows estimated world illiteracy rates by region and by gender for the last year.

The bar chart compares the percentages of illiteracy of men and women in 6 different areas.The data is from last year. On the whole, illiteracy rates of women were higher than men in all places and, the rates of men changed according to the area they are living in. Looking at the details, the lowest illiteracy rates belongs to developed countries with both females and males being at around %2. Also, In Latin America and Caribbean the rates of men and women were similar, with males at %10 and females at around %12. The highest female illiteracy rates were recorded in South Asia, Arab states and Sub-Saharan Africa with rates at %55, %52 and %49 respectively. Similarly the highest male illiteracy rates were recorded in the same 3 countries with Arab states being the lowest with around %28. On the other hand, in East Asia and Oceania the male illiteracy rate was around %9 while, the rates of women were %20.

Academic writing: part 2 introductions and conclusions.

Most students know that essays should start with an introduction and end with a conclusion. However, beginning and ending the essay is often far more difficult than writing the main body. Introductions are especially difficult because they give the examiner his or her first impression of your essay writing skills. Conclusions are the last thing the examiner will read before deciding your grade! Therefore, it’s important to know what should and should not be included in each of these sections.

Introductions

The purpose of an introduction is to clarify what you understand the title to mean . You may also want to mention briefly why this is an important issue . Finally you need to outline how you intend to answer the question. Let’s examine each of these ideas in more detail.

1. Clarifying the meaning of the title What are you being asked to do? Define any keywords. If there are no words which require a definition, it is still a good idea to interpret any keywords in the title. Look at this essay title, for example: Illiteracy has traditionally been viewed as a third world problem. However, in developed countries, illiteracy is increasing. Examine possible causes for this and its effect on society.

You should define ‘illiteracy’ in the introduction. It’s also important to make it clear that you understand the difference between ‘third world’ and ‘developed’ countries. You also might want to interpret the word ‘society’. What exactly does ‘society’ mean in the context of this essay? Clarifying this will help you to write a focused, relevant essay.

2. Mention briefly why this is an important issue. You may want to include one sentence addressing why this issue is interesting or important, and to whom. However, take care. Students often begin essays with a statement such as ‘Illiteracy is a hot topic in today’s society’. Try to avoid this. It sounds as if you are reciting a phrase you have learnt and you are not thinking about the issue itself. Consider why illiteracy is important, who it affects and whose job it is to solve the problem.

3. Outline how you intend to answer the question This is a very important part of the introduction. The last sentence of your introduction should outline exactly what you aim to do in your essay, and how you aim to do it. This sentence is called the Thesis Statement . The thesis statement is very similar to the title. For example, a suitable thesis statement for the title above could be:

This essay will firstly describe some reasons why illiteracy is increasing in developed countries, and then examine the effect of illiteracy on society.

 A good thesis statement will show the reader how the essay will be structured. For example, by reading the thesis statement above, the examiner will know the number of sections in the essay, and the topic of each paragraph. He or she will also know that the writer understands the question in the title and is addressing it directly. Obviously, you cannot write a good thesis statement unless you have planned your essay outline first.

One more important thing to remember is that you must not start answering the question in the introduction. Do this in the main body of the essay.

Conclusions

Conclusions are actually quite simple. The purpose of the conclusion is to answer the question in the title . Do this by referring to the points you have already made in the main body. Don’t repeat whole sentences, just summarise the main points. It is also important that you do not raise any new ideas in the conclusion. The conclusion need not be long. Keep it brief and make sure it is directly related to the question.

It is true that illiteracy is becoming a serious problem in industrialised nations. This is surprising as most people think that this is a problem only in under-developed nations such as in parts of Africa and India. Illiteracy is related to many other problems such as poverty, over-population and governmental corruption. Let us take a more detailed look at the causes of this growing problem in many Western nations. One of the most obvious reasons for the increase in illiteracy is the advent of television. Children no longer have to read to obtain information. Neither do they have to read to relax. Today children get home from school and go straight to “the box” to watch their favorite program. Watching television is much easier and more exciting than reading. Another reason for the increase in illiteracy is the fact that so many women work. This means that children are often alone at home and so they are unsupervised. When parents get home they are often too tired to spend quality time whit their children. It is also true that many people blame schools for the decline in illiteracy. In many countries there has been a move away from teaching basic skills such as reading and writing. There are many effects of this growing illiteracy rate. The most obvious is unemployment. This may in turn lead to alcohol and drug abuse. Ultimately the economy of the country begins to suffer and there is a drop in living standards. To address this problem, parents need to become more aware of their responsibilities and schools need to consider a change in their teaching methods. If this worsening trend is not reversed, the problem of illiteracy will become very serious.
