Homework is no fun, especially if you’ve got a full schedule. You only have a little bit of time and a little bit of energy. And it takes so long to get through it.

Not anymore. We’ve got some helpful homework hacks for you that will make doing your homework faster and less painful.

1. Plan Your Homework and Make a List

When you start your homework, you’ll probably jump right into the first thing on your mind or the first thing you pull out of your backpack, then work your way through the rest of your assignments. There’s a better way.

Figure out how much time you have to do homework, then list out all the different tasks that you have to do. Estimate how long it will take to complete each assignment to see if you need to allow yourself more time. Be realistic. Once your list is complete you can work straight through instead of stopping frequently to figure out what to do next. It will also be extremely gratifying to cross things off after each assignment you finish!

2. Get Out All the Books and Supplies You Need

While you’re working, you discover you need a calculator, you need a certain book, you need a new pencil, you ran out of paper… the list can go on.

Since you’ve now identified all your assignments, figure out everything you need to get each item done and bring it to your workspace so it’s there when you need it.

3. Find a Quiet Place to Work Without Distractions

Speaking of workspace, you probably prefer doing your homework in front of the TV, but that can actually be the biggest distraction of all. Sitting in front of the TV is probably slowing you down, making homework time seem much longer that it actually is.

Find a place that’s quiet, with as few distractions and clutter possible. Remember, the faster you get it done, the faster you can get back to fully enjoying Netflix.

4. Turn Off Your Phone

We know this is probably the last thing you want to hear. How can you live without your phone? But for a couple hours, its totally worth it. Every time you get a notification and check your phone, it breaks your focus. It then takes more brain power to get back on track to what you were working on.

5. Listen to Classical Music While Working

We know what you’re thinking… Classical music? Seriously?

However, classical music is great for background audio. There aren’t any lyrics or beats to distract your focus. And research has shown that students who listen to classical music score higher on tests than students who listen to other genres of music. So find some good classical playlist on Spotify, then celebrate with Queen Bey when you’re done.

6. Eat Snacks and Drink Water

At the end of a long day, you may be mentally and physically tired. If you go straight into homework it may take you a long time to finish and it won’t be your best work.

Having some light healthy snacks and drinking plenty of water helps revitalize your brain and body. Avoid soda, energy drinks, or sugary snacks that will only make you crash before you’re done.

7. Take Short Breaks in Between Homework Tasks

If you have a lot to do, you may feel the pressure to just work straight through hours and hours of homework. But this will likely end up slowing you down, prolonging the entire session.

Do your work in short sprints. Go hard at a task, then take a quick break to stretch and walk around. It’ll re-energize your mind and body to keep going. For starters, try working for 25 minutes, then taking a 5-minute break.

8. Reward Yourself After You’re Finished

Homework isn’t always fun. But negativity can slow you down.

How many times have you found yourself still staring at your textbook around midnight (or later!) even when you started your homework hours earlier? Those lost hours could be explained by Parkinson’s Law, which states, “Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.” In other words, if you give yourself all night to memorize those geometry formulas for your quiz tomorrow, you’ll inevitably find that a 30 minute task has somehow filled your entire evening.

We know that you have more homework than ever. But even with lots and lots to do, a few tweaks to your study routine could help you spend less time getting more accomplished. Here are 8 steps to make Parkinson’s Law work to your advantage:

1. Make a list

This should be a list of everything that has to be done that evening. And we mean, everything—from re-reading notes from this morning’s history class to quizzing yourself on Spanish vocabulary.

2. Estimate the time needed for each item on your list

You can be a little ruthless here. However long you think a task will take, try shaving off 5 or 10 minutes. But, be realistic. You won’t magically become a speed reader.

3. Gather all your gear

Collect EVERYTHING you will need for the homework you are working on (like your laptop for writing assignments and pencils for problem sets). Getting up for supplies takes you off course and makes it that much harder to get back to your homework.

The constant blings and beeps from your devices can make it impossible to focus on what you are working on. Switch off or silence your phones and tablets, or leave them in another room until it’s time to take a tech break.

5. Time yourself

Noting how much time something actually takes will help you estimate better and plan your next study session.

6. Stay on task

If you’re fact checking online, it can be so easy to surf on over to a completely unrelated site. A better strategy is to note what information you need to find online, and do it all at once at the end of the study session.

7. Take plenty of breaks

Most of us need a break between subjects or to break up long stretches of studying. Active breaks are a great way to keep your energy up. Tech breaks can be an awesome way to combat the fear of missing out that might strike while you are buried in your work, but they also tend to stretch much longer than originally intended. Stick to a break schedule of 10 minutes or so.

8. Reward yourself! 

Finish early? If you had allocated 30 minutes for reading a biology chapter and it only took 20, you can apply those extra 10 minutes to a short break—or just move on to your next task. If you stay on track, you might breeze through your work quickly enough to catch up on some Netflix.

Our best piece of advice? Keep at it. The more you use this system, the easier it will become. You’ll be surprised by how much time you can shave off homework just by focusing and committing to a distraction-free study plan.

Keep a physical or digital list of all your pending assignments and their deadlines. You can consistently track your tasks using this list. A notebook or note-taking app would work well.

When it’s time to work on your assignments, pull out this list and start with the most urgent task that has the closest deadline. Continue working your way through the list based on how urgent each task is.

The list clarifies which assignments require immediate attention and which can be done another day.

This allows you to dive right into doing your homework and saves precious time.

Making lists can lighten your brain’s workload . It also helps to reduce anxiety and boost productivity.

2. Spruce things up with a study buddy

One of the best ways to boost motivation and get the ball rolling is by doing homework with a study buddy.

Having someone with you can help you to stay engaged and on task.

By putting homework on your calendar, you'll have the time allocated in your already-too-busy schedule, you'll reduce your stress by knowing when, exactly, your homework will be done, and you'll be better able to enjoy whatever else you have planned since you'll know your homework is already taken care of.

Sneak in Your Homework

Use small increments of time whenever possible. You know that 20-minute bus ride you have to and from campus every day? Well, that's 40 minutes a day, 5 days a week which means that if you did some reading during the ride, you'd get more than 3 hours of homework done during your commute.

Those little increments can add up: 30 minutes between classes here, 10 minutes waiting for a friend there. Be smart about sneaking in small bits of homework so that you can conquer the bigger assignments piece by piece.

You Can't Always Get It All Done

Understand that you can't always get all your homework done. One of the biggest skills to learn in college is how to gauge what you  can't  get done. Because sometimes, there really is only so many hours in a day, and the basic laws of physics mean you can't accomplish everything on your to-do list.

Create a study space

It can be difficult — or even impossible—to study if the environment in which you are studying is distracting you. If you try to do your homework in your bedroom or at a friend’s house, you might find it impossible to focus. After all, who wouldn’t be distracted in these scenarios?

Instead of doing your homework on your laptop while lying in bed, try sitting up at a desk in a quiet room. Develop a routine

Developing a routine can help you become more effective at doing your homework. Try to do your homework at the same time each day, or at a similar time each week. Devote a certain amount of hours to a certain assignment that you have, and stick to this amount of time.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

• Best for: 24/7 homework assistance 

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription. 

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

• Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them. 

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

• Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
• Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.  

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

1. Do Your Homework and Assignments in School

You can start to work on your assignment right after your lectures. Take advantage of the extra time you have in your school day or stay on campus for a while after classes. You will complete your homework faster because the lessons are still fresh in your head.

If you don’t get your homework done on campus, you should create an after-school schedule. Decide the amount of time you can dedicate to homework every evening. With some apps, you can even prevent yourself from opening the sites you block until the set amount of time is over. This will allow you to concentrate only on the task in front of you.

5. Use a Timer

Attempting to focus for hours without taking short breaks can be counterproductive. One of the most helpful homework hacks is to use the Pomodoro technique. It is an approach that uses a timer to divide the workload into cycles of 25 minutes. The cycles are separated by quick breaks starting from 5 minutes. 

To use this technique, you will need to establish the assignment task you want to work on from your homework plan and start the timer. You will go hard on the task for 25 mins without losing focus. Once your timer goes off, you can take a break of 5 mins to stretch, grab a healthy snack, or walk around. You should set a timer for your break to avoid taking too much time. Repeat the cycles until you either complete your homework or the time you allocated for your homework schedule ends. 

After working for four cycles, you can take a more extended break of about 15 to 30 mins. 

If you focus entirely on just homework for the set amount of time, you will get your homework done faster. 

You can work in cycles of more than 25 minutes if your concentration span allows it.

If you require background music, create your playlist early to avoid disruptions during your focus intervals. Make sure it’s music that enhances your productivity.

The Pomodoro Technique is also a good way of remaining on task if your work requires surfing online. 

6. Do the Most Challenging Tasks First

While it’s tempting to start working on the easy parts, begin with the most challenging homework problems. That’s because you have the most energy and concentration when you start. “We didn’t develop PhotoMath as a cheating tool. We really wanted kids to learn,” said Tijana Zganec, a sales and marketing associate at tech company MicroBlink, which created PhotoMath. “If you want to cheat, you will find a way to cheat. But if you want to learn, you can use PhotoMath for that.”

HwPic Co-Founder Tiklat Issa said that the app was initially rejected by Apple’s App Store, which believed it would promote cheating, but he successfully argued that just because someone uses the app in a way that it’s not meant to be used doesn’t mean the app should be punished.

Issa added that HwPic prohibits cheating in its terms and conditions. Tutors don’t solve homework that has words like “Quiz” or “Exam,” and they often know if a student is sending a photo during a test if they’ve paid for expedited answers, and if the photo is dim, blurry and taken under a desk. “We’ve minimized cheating,” said Issa. “We haven’t eliminated it. That’s kind of unrealistic.”

Wolfram Alpha

Wolfram Alpha is similar to PhotoMath, only that it targets older students studying high levels of math and doesn’t support photos. The service also outputs step-by-step solutions to topics as advanced as vector calculus and differential equations, making it a popular tool for college students.

“It’s cheating not doing computer-based math, because we’re cheating students out of real conceptual understanding and an ability to drive much further forward in the math they can do, to cover much more conceptual ground. And in turn, that’s cheating our economies,” said Conrad Wolfram, Wolfram Research’s Director of Strategic Development, in a TEDx Talk . “People talk about the knowledge economy. I think we’re moving forward to what we’re calling the computational knowledge economy.”

Homework Helper

Chinese Internet search company Baidu launched an app called Homework Helper this year with which students can crowdsource help or answers to homework. Users post a picture or type their homework questions onto online forums, and those who answer the questions can win e-coins that can be used to buy electronics like iPhones and laptops.

The app has logged 5 million downloads, much to the dismay of many some parents who argue that the students spend less time thinking about challenging problems. A Homework Helper staffer admitted to Quartz , “I think this is a kind of cheating.”

Slader is a crowdsourcing app for high school and college students to post and answer questions in math and science. While students can post original homework for help, many questions in popular textbooks have already been answered on the app, according to Fast Company . An Illinois high school said earlier this year that it suspected students were using the service to cheat on their math homework.

Slader argues that it’s “challenging traditional ideas about math and education,” and said that the ideas behind its app “aren’t a write-off to teachers,” according to its blog . Slader told San Francisco media outlet KQED that it shouldn’t be dismissed as a cheating tool, but rather considered a way for students to access real-time help.

How to find time to get your homework done

High school can be one of the busiest times of your entire education. You’re not only juggling classes, but also everything else that comes along with the age: sports and other extracurriculars, social activities, standardized tests, college searches, etc. And it’s not as if you have all day to accomplish these tasks – you’re actually in school for most of the day. So it is no wonder that so many of you are stressed out, pulling all-nighters, and barely getting your homework done.

If this sounds like you (it totally sounds like me when I was in high school), then just trust me: you can get better at managing your time in one way or another. I did! (But not until senior year. Oops.)

Before I get to the strategies for finding time to do your homework, I just have to mention the importance of creating a proper workspace. This might be your bedroom, a den, your school library – anywhere that’s quiet and distraction-free. Not a good idea to set up shop at the kitchen table if that’s Grand Central Station at your house. Wherever you choose to make your workspace, make it awesome: have plenty of supplies so you don’t have to stop what you’re doing to find a pen. Make sure there is no TV in sight, and if you’re using your computer, stay off social media and the fun stuff until you’re done with business. (If your social media self-discipline is weak, try an app like SelfControl (free) or Freedom ($10), which block certain sites when you activate the program. Deactivate the program when you’re done with your homework if you want.) I suggest using the same workspace every day if you can. Over time and with consistency, your brain and body will automatically switch to “homework mode” the moment you sit down at your workspace. Humans are cool like that.

So how do you actually find the time to get your homework done?

1. The first step to managing your time is to figure out how many hours you really have left after school and after any of your after-school activities. (By after-school activities, I mean things like practice, dance, horseback riding, work, etc. – not hanging out with friends, which is something we’ll get to later in this post.) Sit down with a calculator and a calendar and do the math to figure out how much time you really have to work on homework/studying on Monday through Friday. For instance: If you have field hockey practice right after school until 5pm during the week, and your ideal bedtime is 10pm, then you have 5 hours a day to work on homework. Well, not really, because unless you sleep at school, you might not get home until 5:30, then you probably shower and eat dinner, and that brings you to 6:15. So that leaves you with 3 hours and 45 minutes to work on homework. Knowing exactly how much time you’re working with is crucial to knowing how to manage it.

2. Schedule your tasks and write down everything that needs to get done in the amount of time you have.  You might find it helpful to create two different schedules — one general schedule at the beginning of the week (to plan out your week in advance) and another schedule every single day after school. Some days you’re going to have more homework than other days, so I really do recommend taking 10 minutes every single day, before you begin your homework, to plan out the afternoon and evening.

Here’s some tips for creating your schedules:

• Write down all your to-dos for the day, whether you have actual assignments and papers, you need to study for a test, or you have to read a certain amount in a book.
• Next to each assignment, write how long you think it will take you. Obviously it’s just an estimate, as you’re not psychic, but take an educated guess. Err on the side of giving yourself more time than you think you need.
• Budget time to study for upcoming tests. If it’s Monday and you have a statistics test on Thursday, then maybe give yourself 30 minutes to study on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. An hour and a half spread out over three days is better than binge-studying the night before.
• Budget time to re-write or type any notes you took during the day. This shouldn’t take long at all, but check out my blog post about note-taking , and how typing up notes and “filling in the gaps” should be done the same day you take your notes.

3. Finally, get to work. Do the quicker tasks first. In other words, attack your one-page Spanish worksheet and your five math problems before you write the first draft of your history essay. Completing the smaller, quicker items first allows you to focus the rest of your time on your larger task, without the distraction of knowing you still have other things to do.

As you complete items, cross them off your list. (So satisfying!) If you want, give yourself a 5-minute break between each item so you don’t burn out. I’d recommend actually setting a timer for 5 minutes , because you know as well as I do that 5 minutes on Facebook turns into 30 minutes so fast.

If you complete an item in less time than you estimated, add that remaining time to the next task.

If a task takes you longer than you estimated, then see where you can make up that time. Either subtract time from other tasks, or as a last resort, move your bedtime back. I’m so hesitant to suggest moving your bedtime back, but sometimes there is just no way around it. Another possibility is to get up a little earlier the next morning to finish an assignment. But be realistic: if you’re a zombie in the morning and honestly don’t see yourself rising early to work on homework, then don’t force yourself. What works for one doesn’t always work for another.

I’ve got to mention procrastination here. If you struggle with procrastination, these tips can help you .  There will of course be times when you will feel overwhelmed because all your teachers really did dump a ton of work on you at once. When this happens, just use every minute you have to plug away at at least something . Do the best you can. But there are other times when you’ll be overwhelmed because you saved everything to the last minute and you just realized it’s all due tomorrow. Although self-inflicted, your pain is just as real in these situations as in the other ones, and you will also just have to do the best you can do get through those moments. However …

… don’t procrastinate! Best lesson I ever learned in school, ever, was to start an assignment right away no matter how far away the due date was. In step 2, when you’re writing your daily list of tasks to get through, plan even just 20 minutes to start your English paper that’s due in a week. Plan just 15 minutes a day to read a few chapters in your book that’s due in two weeks. Take advantage of lighter homework days to make a dent in future assignments. Trust me – do it just once and it’s the best feeling ever to get ahead.

Also consider that evening doesn’t have to be the only time you get homework done; look for other pockets of time throughout your day to chip away at assignments.

Here are some sneaky extra sources of time that could be used to get homework done:

• free periods during school
• free time between the end of school and the beginning of practice
• bus rides to and from games and events
• car rides home or to wherever you’re going (as a passenger, of course)
• when you’re waiting for dinner to be served
• waiting rooms at doctor’s/dentists/whatever’s offices
• before school if you get there early
• after school when you’re waiting for your ride

Working on the weekends?

Weekends are of course for reenergizing (sleeping!), seeing friends and doing other non-school related activities. But, they’re also an excellent time to study for upcoming tests and to work on longer-term projects such as an essay due at the end of the week. Balance is important — so make sure you’re having some fun on Saturday or Sunday — but you’ll be doing yourself a huge favor by putting aside a chunk of time on one or both days to attack what needs to get done for the upcoming week. I suggest you work with your natural tendencies when figuring out when to work during the weekend. For instance, if you’re a morning person, do your work in the morning when your energy levels are higher. If you’re really not a morning person, then work in the late afternoons, before evening activities. Schedule this time into your weekends as if it’s a soccer game or a doctor’s appointment. Make it non-negotiable.

Managing your time well is the core of productivity. If you struggle with getting things done, get stressed about deadlines, and find yourself sacrificing your sleep because you have “so much work to do,” then you’re probably not managing your time well. Quizard provides a paragraph explanation along with the short answer. READ THOROUGHLY bc it is a computer and sometimes the wording makes it come up with “the wrong (short) answer” even though throughout the (longer paragraph) explanation you can figure out the true answer that Quizard happened to word incorrectly or chose a similar but wrong multiple choice option for. If you’re not trying using it for just the short answer not bothering to read and check the answer and dont read the paragraph then ya.. some of your answers are gonna be wrong. WHAT KIND OF AI ARE YOU!? So, i tell it that it’s incorrect, it’s actually “gymnasium” & it tells me, “ I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but can you explain the answer’s to me?” ….. The present Author’s experience, that one had to confront people, with a degree, of severity; to get them, to think, for themselves. They had to be driven, into it, by very powerful confrontation, with deep insight. Nothing less, would do it, than a facing-off, with someone, far more knowledgeable, than they were ( or had been taught, to be ). You have to be hard, on people, for them, to respect you -- in their own interests -- but not so much, that they turn away !

This reminds me of a book I read in the 6th grade, 1960 to you, called “Danny Dunn and the Homework Machine.” In the book Danny Dunn’s father was a computer scientist and father built his own computer. Danny Dunn and his friends program the computer to do their homework for them. They also designed a gizmo that would let them write out four copies of the homework that changed the handwriting of each copy that was written out, so it looked like four different people’s handwriting. They got caught, if I remember correctly because though the handwriting was different the content was the same. When caught they said they programmed the computer, so in doing the programming they did the work. Danny and friends did not carry the day and had to stop using the computer. So, who really did the work? Technology requires us to confront difficult questions, but they should be confronted fairly. I remember when using online “resources” was questionable because of the doubtful reliability. Pierre Salinger, who once was JFK’s press secretary, gave an opinion on a controversial issue (don’ remember the issue) and said he was sure he was correct because he found it on the internet. This was at a time when a comment like that became a joke. But that is not the case now. I teach in an online classroom, but that was once a dubious educational platform. We learned to make it into a very viable one. I imagine that AI will go through a similar transformation and the time will probably come, more quickly than we may think, when this will be a viable tool, if it isn’t already. Instead of running away from it, we need to train students to use the tool properly. My experience with AI is minimal (the AI component of MS Word). It keeps telling me to change the word I used with a more common word that means the same thing. What it does is make my writing more pedestrian and removes what we call “style.” Cordially, J. D. Thank you, Jacob, for this thoughtful piece. I am a doctoral faculty member and the discussions we've had to "distinguish" AI from generative AI are in many ways maddening, like the snake swallowing its tale. We discuss appropriate and inappropriate uses as well as penalties. And I dare say the students retort with "so what?" because they know we can't fully prove they've had a program write something for them because they've taken the time to craft detailed prompts for the bot to respond to (in many of our cases) and what comes out is not as deeply "wrong" as what you've described. At least not now ... it likely was back in their first year course when they got off with a warning, which provided them with the tools to use the bot better. My point to students is to ask, generally, how much time it took them to "teach the bot" what they wanted because in that time, they could have written the assignment themselves. I also remind them that when they get out in the world, people don't function like bots and will ask questions: it is a terrible thing to be marching around with letters in front of you name that you can't defend with your own scholarship.

I’ll admit it: I’m getting tired. Tired of pushing against the current of “AI” hype. Tired of explaining that having a chatbot produce answers for you is not education. Tired of explaining that, indeed, taking ideas and words you didn’t make and submitting them as your own work (without attribution) is plagiarism. Tired of arguing that thinking for ourselves and not pursuing cognitive offloading to massive for-profit companies are genuine human goods.

Whatever, I sometimes say. If students want to stifle their own social, intellectual, and, dare I say, spiritual growth and have chatbots do their work, just let them. Like I said, I’m tired. I’m tired of flailing to explain how what I find precious in life is in fact precious. Maybe I’m just being a stick-in-the-techno-progress-myth mud. But then I see what some students submitted as their own work this term, academic work that dedicated instructors would have to read and evaluate, and I once again feel like I cannot give up on saying all this. Over and over.

Because, besides other misconduct, what I saw was students not bothering to secure a required book, not bothering to read it, and instead feeding prompts to ChatGPT, taking the output – I will not call it “writing” – and submitting it as their own considered thoughts on the matter. As the academic integrity director at my university, I saw a lot of this this spring, compared to the prior term. I’m assuming my institution is not an outlier in this regard. And I hear people say we need to get the discourse around academia and “generative AI” away from cheating. Would that we could. But what I saw in a large number of cases was not just disheartening regarding academic success or integrity, but also a gesture of vanity that took the quiet part of the “generative AI” moment and said it loud. Especially with OpenAI announcing their ChatGPT Edu application in May, those of us who see the problems with this new automated, corporate model of education can’t remain silent or passive.

It’s always difficult to see a student cheat or plagiarize or engage in fraud. But seeing these assignments was different. In case after case, I began reading what sounded like a college-level essay. But as I proceeded, I noticed the vagueness, the fifty-cent words, and the hyperbolic relevance that many of us have come to associate with chatbot outputs. But the primary problem was, in these particular essays, the actions of the characters as well as the plot points “the students” discussed weren’t in the book. They weren’t in the book at all . They were, rather, what the discourse refers to as “hallucinations” (but that term smacks of actual cognition too much for my taste). That is, they didn’t exist until the chatbot that students had prompted brought them into existence. And my, how the chatbot went on about how important these characters were, the moral valence of their activities, etc., etc. But it was all utter bullshit , in the technical sense of discourse unhooked from any sense of the value of truth and falsehood. Bullshit that some students see as at very least “good enough,” if not “better than I could do.”

Both of these evaluations are wrong. But it’s not that the chatbot “got it wrong” that’s so problematic. Humans get stuff wrong all the time. It was, rather, that students read material that had no reference to reality and found it so convincing – maybe, again, seeing it as “better than what I could do.” Rather than being better than what they could do, that output was really a tissue of probabilistic text that had no reference to reality, produced by something without any capacity to engage with reality  – only digital inputs that “code” the reality that exists beyond the data system. We all know that chatbots produce random, meaningless, inaccurate text (and apparently this still isn’t a strike against machine-learning applications in education for lots of people), but some students are still convinced that these machines can do their work for them and do it better than they can.

As we all know, these products have massive hype behind them, convincing students (and plenty of more experienced people too) that, indeed, what the chatbot can do is “better than what I could do.” There’s the “no, it enhances what people do” angle in the hype, but let’s get serious: given the media ecology surrounding the tech sector in our contemporary neoliberal, Western culture; given the subconscious and not-so-subconscious ongoing narrative of progress that has glommed on to tech when all other accounts of intrinsic progress have been stymied; given the incessant proclamation by social media influencers that there’s no point in doing one’s own work when machines can do it for you; and especially given that our students are entering a world that reinforces a worldview oriented toward efficiency, productivity, and profitability with the devices the adults in their lives valorize and for which they train them (often without explicit critique), the idea that our young people will resist the view that their work is of a wholly different order than what chatbots produce (and of intrinsically superior value) is strained at best. We are seeing the commodification of communication itself. We need to keep reminding ourselves that chatbots are not magical robot agents but, rather, products made by technicians working at powerful companies in an extractive capitalist system.

We have to help them see this, and we’re not doing a good job.

But let’s get back to how these papers weren’t engaging with reality, and not doing so at length . Again, it’s not that one detail was off or one name was wrong. It was pages of prose about characters and plot points that don’t exist. And students took it at face value as solid work, solid enough to put one’s name at the top of and submit as one’s own. The vanity at work here is difficult to ignore after seeing all these examples. And that’s the word that I came to when I sought to describe this situation. One day in May I was talking through the difficulty of seeing so many students thinking this was an acceptable way of doing their intellectual work, when our office’s coordinator put words to what I was trying to get at: “the emptiness of it.”

Yes, the emptiness of having the opportunity to engage in serious reading, serious dialogue, serious thinking, serious interpreting, and instead “offloading” that reading, dialogue, thought, and interpretation to a probabilistic engine: emptiness, vanity. Vanity in the sense of Ecclesiastes: “Vanity of vanity, all is vanity!” Vanity in the sense of the Oxford English Dictionary: “That which is vain, futile, or worthless; that which is of no value or profit.” But especially, vanity from Latin vanitas , “emptiness, nothingness, nullity, want of reality” (Lewis and Short, A Latin Dictionary ). Most especially that last one: “want of reality.”

And I already hear plenty of people saying, “But that’s not how you’re supposed to use these tools!” I get that. But we can wish that all we like; the essays I was reading were showing what can happen when humans engage with these applications. In the parlance of our times, this vanity is a feature, not a bug, of these systems. When students work with a chatbot to produce text that is passable, whatever learning took place there took place despite the chatbot’s production of text. Because the student had to know what text produced was based in reality, was prudently stated, and was relevant to the task. Otherwise, students don’t know what they don’t know about that text output. If it happens that a student doesn’t know these features and submits something that passes for reality anyway, it’s an accident; the crapshoot of probability worked out as far as assessment goes.

But education is not supposed to be a probabilistic crapshoot or an information-processing exercise to “solve the problem” of getting a degree. It’s supposed to be a formation of the mind (and the whole person, ideally). I think the chatbot moment is pointing up how our institutions and cultural expectations of education have come to see education really as the former, not the latter. There is a difference between producing a text for your boss and learning how to craft a text that is actually a representation of one’s own considered thought in light of one’s subjective engagement with the surrounding world.

And it is precisely here that the vanity of using these applications in education comes into view. While employing these systems for some tasks may have “value or profit” in terms of efficiency and production for markets, these qualities are not (or, I hope they are not) the goals of a liberal arts education. The friction, the struggle, the discerning of such an education are precisely the point, for it is only in that friction and struggle that discernment is exercised and one undergoes, as Saint John Henry Newman says, “enlargement [of the mind] or enlightenment.” For Newman, education is not an accumulation of knowledge. Rather,

The enlargement consists, not merely in the passive reception into the mind of a number of ideas hitherto unknown to it, but in the mind’s energetic and simultaneous action upon and towards and among those new ideas, which are rushing in upon it. It is the action of a formative power, reducing to order and meaning the matter of our acquirements; it is making the objects of our knowledge subjectively our own. ( Knowledge Viewed in Relation to Learning , 153)

The activity of the intellect here is a kind of knowledge that is non-instrumental. This does not mean that it cannot be used for something else outside the human subject, but that its primary (and sine qua non ) aspect is the formation of the human subject as one who understands the nature of the world and its parts in ever clearer and more complex ways.

Because the chatbot moment is pointing up the difference so starkly between instrumental production of text (and visuals and audio) on the one hand and learning that forms the individual’s intellect in the “enlarging” way Newman describes on the other (for some of us at least), it’s a great catalyst in fact for articulating exactly what we do want for our students. We want to invite them into work that is meaningful to them, challenges their current horizon, and leads them to ask more questions and wonder how the world could be this way and how it could be different. And, perhaps, to do something about it. When I’m able to see this aspect of our collective situation, I’m reinvigorated, not tired. But I have to keep working things out like I have in this essay to see it again.

Ate/eats : If you say someone "ate," it means you are saying that they did something exceptionally well or deserving of praise, according to Keyhole . "Did you hear Charli XCX's latest album? She ate."

Aura points: "Aura points" refer to a lighthearted way of measuring coolness, based on a TikTok trend, according to Polygon . " Did you see her new shoes? She definitely just gained some aura points."

Cap/No cap : To "cap" means to "lie, to boast, or to front," according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary (although this meaning hasn't officially made it yet). "No cap" means you are being truthful or honest. "Joe said he didn't take my food, but I think that's cap."

Drip : Drip means cool, stylish or fashionable clothing, according to Arizona State University . If someone is "dripped out," it means they are dressed stylishly. "I just went to the mall and bought some new drip."

Fanum tax : The act of stealing someone's food without their permission. The origin comes from online comedy creator Fanum, who is a part of streamer and Youtuber Kai Cenat's "influencer crew," according to Business Insider . Fanum is known for jokingly taking other's food and calling it a "tax." "I took his fries when he wasn't looking — he had to pay the Fanum tax."

Goat: An acronym meaning "Greatest of all time." LeBron James is the goat. He's been goated since he was in Cleveland.

Gyatt/Gyat : Gyatt or gyat (Ge-yaht) is used to express strong excitement, surprise, or admiration, often in reference to seeing a large butt, according to Dictionary.com . It can also be used as a term by itself for a large butt.

Looksmaxxing : "Looksmaxxing" is an online movement dedicated to maximizing your physical appearance, often through a variety of techniques including improving your jawline, skincare and muscles, according to The BBC . "Riley's been obsessed with looksmaxxing videos on TikTok lately."

Mewing : Mewing is looksmaxxing technique aimed at improving your jawline by holding your tongue on the roof of your mouth, according to the BBC. Mewing comes from a controversial British orthodontist named John Mew. who developed a practice called "orthotropics." According to the BBC, there is little evidence supporting its effectiveness. "Dude, are you seriously mewing right now? Are you looksmaxxing?"

Mog : To "mog" someone is to be significantly more attractive than them, and thereby lower their attractiveness in comparison, according to Vice News . "He mogged everyone else at the party with his drip."

Ohio : No, they aren't really talking about the Buckeye state. Unfortunately for Ohioans, "Ohio" has a slang meaning of strange, weird, cringe or dumb . The origin likely originates from a number of memes like "it's all Ohio," or "Can't even X in Ohio" that circulated online culture in the 2020s, according to Know Your Meme . "Did you see how she was dressed at school today? She's so Ohio."

Rizz : A shortening of the word "charisma," used to state that someone has success in attracting romantic partners, according to Merriam-Webster . "He spent the entire party rizzing up the girls."

Rizzler : A rizzler is someone who is successful at flirting with people, according to The New York Times .

Sigma: A "sigma" (based on the Greek alphabet) is a male who has overcome the hierarchy of "alpha" and "beta" males, often characterized by silent success, or someone is a social outcast by choice and "plays by their own rules," according to Know Your Meme . Colloquially, it can just mean good or best.

Skibidi (Skibidi toilet) : "Skibidi" refers to a series of surrealist videos popular on Youtube , which features an army of human-headed toilets fighting a war against another army of camera-headed men, according to Forbes . Skibidi as a slang word is largely meaningless and is a simple reference to the video series.

Slay : If you "slay" something, it means you do it particularly well, according to Dictionary.com . ""Did you hear Charli XCX's latest album? She's slay."

Before the announcement for UK shows, Irish promoters MCD said on its website that the price of both of the two Croke Park gigs in Dublin will start at 86.50 euros (£72.75) without booking fees.

When do tickets go on sale and how can I get them?

All tickets will go on sale on Saturday 31 August. The Dublin dates will be on sale from 8am and the UK dates will go on sale at 9am .

But fans can now register to be in a pre-sale ballot until 10am (UK time) on Friday morning.

The deadline was originally 7pm on Wednesday but the band changed it due to "a last minute surge" in entries.

Successful applicants in the ballot will be informed by 5pm on Friday via email with full access information, however, this does not guarantee fans a ticket as they are still sold on a first come first served basis.

The band has warned fans on social media that confirmation emails for the ballot entry may be delayed due to a high volume of people signing up, but has assured them that anyone who has filled in a ballot correctly before the deadline will receive one.

The band's official website has "strongly advised" anyone hoping to purchase tickets to register in advance of the sale with the relevant ticket agencies.

Top tips for getting tickets

The ticket sites offer key advice for fans looking to have an edge over others in the race for in-demand tickets.

Here's a summary of their biggest tips:

• Don't wait until Saturday morning to register. This will mean you have plenty of time to get your account set up with all the right billing and delivery information • Verify your account. You have to add your phone number and confirm a one-time passcode with new accounts for protection. You only need to do it once • If you already have an account, double-check it. It's worth logging in before Saturday just to check you know your password, your delivery and billing information is all correct, and to ensure you've already completed your one-time passcode • Make sure your card details are already saved to avoid last-minute scrambling • Get your phones and laptops charged before the deadline • Make sure you're happy with your internet connection. Private WiFi is best, and if that isn't working, Ticketmaster advises using your mobile data over public WiFi, which it says is "usually the least reliable" • Don't refresh the page while in a waiting room. Ticketing sites use a queuing system when they get busy, meaning you get put in an online waiting room with other fans. They warn that refreshing the page won't move you further up the line, and that the page itself updates automatically. So once you're in, wait it out...

How many tickets can I buy and how expensive could they be?

You can get a maximum of four tickets per transaction, and you aren't permitted to sell them for more than you bought them for, according to event organisers.

The price of tickets hasn't been announced yet, though the Manchester Evening News has reported they are expected to exceed £100.

Back in 2009, just over a month before Oasis split, the band performed at Wembley Stadium and charged £38.50 plus VAT (which at the time was 15%), meaning the total cost was just over £44.

When Sky News put those numbers into the Bank of England's inflation calculator, the total was £68.02 - which is still considered low nowadays.

Will there be another chance to buy tickets?

There won't be another official sale, but you may be able to snatch resale tickets.

On its website, Oasis says it has partnered with Ticketmaster and ticket resale platform Twickets to ensure tickets aren't resold for more than the price originally paid - including booking fees.

The band has also warned those reselling the tickets that selling through any other platforms will breach the terms and conditions of the sale and may result in the tickets being cancelled.

Do you even deserve tickets?

Since the announcement, social media has been flooded by debate about who this concert is really for.

"What's your favourite B-side?" - an eligibility test being used by people who "were at Knebworth".

Die-hard Oasis fans who were there in the 90s will say they are the ones who most deserve to get their hands on tickets.

"Imagine waiting 15 years for Oasis to reform only to lose out on tickets to Chloe, 21 from Stockport who just wants to hear Wonderwall live", one X user posts.

In response, another writes: "Obsessed with all the men creating fictional young women who they might lose out on Oasis tickets to."

"Like most kids, my parents influenced my music taste growing up, from Bruce Springsteen and Tina Turner to the Rolling Stones.

"Kylie Minogue, obviously, was also a big feature in my cassette collection.

"But Oasis were the first band that felt like mine, not music I'd inherited.

"As a teenager I listened over and over, studied the album covers, and went on to see them live five times, each gig holding different memories and anecdotes. For those of us who grew up with them, they embodied our youth, the spirit of the '90s.

"But that doesn't mean these gigs belong to the older fans, which, like it or not, is the bracket I fall into now. You only have to see all the teenagers and younger adults at Liam's solo shows to see how Oasis's songs resonate with different generations. The music has stood the test of time, which can only be a good thing.

"Those gatekeeping fans are most likely the same as those complaining about how all music is rubbish these days. Well, you can't have it both ways.

"If I'm lucky enough to get tickets, I hope to be singing along with bucket-hat wearing fans of all ages."

Flying within the U.S. will soon require an extra document that's more secure than a state-issued driver's license or ID if you don't want to lug around your passport with you. 

Beginning in May of next year, all U.S. travelers will be required to have the official document, known as a Real ID, on hand when traveling domestically by air. As an alternative, they may carry their passports with them. 

The initiative is a long time coming. It was initially slated for enforcement beginning in May 2023, but the deadline was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Here's everything you need to know, including what is required to apply, and how and where to do so. 

What is a Real ID?

It's essentially an enhanced form of identification which, beginning May 7, 2025, will be required to access certain federal facilities, board commercial aircraft, and enter nuclear power plants, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). 

The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses, permits, and ID cards. It's designed to reduce identity fraud, as it also prohibits Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel from accepting cards that don't meet the new minimum standards, according to the DHS.

Who needs one?

Any traveler who is 18 years or older who plans to fly domestically or visit certain federal facilities will require a Real ID, or an alternative acceptable form of identification, such as a passport. Beginning May 7, 2025, TSA will only accept Real ID cards with the compliant star marking. A handful of states including Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Vermont are issuing Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDL) with a flag marking, which also meet Real ID standards. 

Do I have a Real ID?

All Real IDs have a star marking in their top right corner. 

If you recently renewed your driver's license, it could be an Enhanced Driver's License, or EDL, which also meets Real ID standards. Check the top right corner of your license for an American flag, indicating it is Real ID-compliant. If it doesn't have the stamp, it is not in compliance with the act. 

How do I get one?

All U.S. states are issuing Real ID cards through their driver's licensing agencies, with requirements varying by state. Many offices require a reservation, which you can make online.

Visit the DHS website , and click on your state of residence for specific instructions on how to apply, as well as what documents you'll need to bring with you to your appointment. Typically you'll need your social security card, proof of citizenship, and multiple proofs of residence.

How much does it cost?

There is no additional fee for a Real ID, but standard DMV processing fees do apply. Getting an enhanced ID costs $30.

It feels like homework never stops getting piled on, and keeping track of it all can feel a little chaotic. That’s where a homework schedule comes in. With a good schedule, you won’t have to worry about missing homework assignments or not having enough time to finish them, and it’s surprisingly easy to put one together. Not sure where to start? Understanding What Needs To Get Done

• The subject or course in which the work is assigned (for example, Spanish , algebra , French or English )
• Know what you're expected to hand in or do and ask if you do not understand (for example, turn in an essay , develop a PowerPoint presentation, or take a test.)
• The details of your assignments (for example, double-spaced or single-spaced, blue ink or black).
• Page numbers (which pages you need to read, study, or refer to complete your assignment.)
• Due date of the assignment.

Getting All of Your Homework Done

• To solve this problem, if you cannot meet all the deadlines, use a static priority rate-monotonic policy. Find the course that releases new homework the most frequently, and list it the highest (do the work first), and so forth. This is mathematically optimal among all static-priority scheduling policies. In other words, if ANY static priority scheme can meet all the deadlines, the rate-monotonic static priority scheme will meet all the deadlines, too. When the static priority scheme misses deadlines, it is deterministic - the lowest priority class assignments will be skipped, so it behaves predictably when you are overloaded. If certain assignments have the same due date, then start with the one(s) that are hardest or will take the longest.

• If you have a five-page English paper due on Friday, evenly spread the total amount of hours you believe it is going to take to complete the paper between each day.
• If you have multiple assignments to complete in one night, it may be helpful to start with the most challenging on and leave the easier ones for later.
