How to Start Freelance Writing: Advice From a Six-Figure Freelancer

freelancer assignment help

I’ve been freelancing since my early college days. It all started with a project my then-boss didn’t have time for.

For me, this effectively sanctioned my pursuit of paid projects outside of work. I definitely stumbled through the process of dealing with my first freelance client but luckily, didn’t completely mess it up.

This early freelancing experience taught me an important lesson:

I have a skill that people are willing to pay for. Even outside of a traditional employer/employee relationship.

From there, I went on to graduate. I worked two sales gigs as a foot in the door to my real dream job: marketing. I ate up every opportunity I could find to grow my existing knowledge — including light freelance assignments.

Eventually, one of my freelance clients, turned mentor, helped me see that I had it in me to support myself doing the things I like to do most, full-time. He became my first really big client, giving me enough work to cover my basic needs, and enough time in my schedule to do work for other clients, too.

Fast forward to today…

It’s been  over three years  now that I’ve been freelancing full-time and I’ve gotta say, this freelance thing ages like a fine wine.

It gets a  lot  better… over time .

I’ve managed to achieve a rare and beautiful work/life balance. But it took time and hard work. It involves continuously challenging myself to get outside my comfort zone.

Here’s what I’m trying to say:

If you put in the tough work  now , you’ll be that much closer to your dreams, with just a few years or months to go.

On my journey to finding success, I’ve shared a lot of the lessons learned along the way for various clients and freelancing publications, which you’ll find below. I love mentoring new freelancers — I also co-founded an in-person meetup for locals:  Freelancers Union Spark Denver .

I put this all-in-one guide that you’re reading together because I wanted new and growing freelancers to have a resource to consult at any stage when they learn how to start freelance writing.

The following represents my best advice for how to start freelance writing — some of my favorite pieces to write:

Jump Ahead to a Specific Section:

Final Thoughts: How to Start Freelance Writing

Please don’t quit your job to freelance without a solid plan.

You may be fantasizing about leaving in a fit of rage, when you just can’t take it anymore.

But unless you have some published samples to demonstrate your abilities, an emergency fund to cover a few months of rent as you wait for clients payments to process, and ideally, a couple clients lined up, the first few months of working for yourself are going to be a rude awakening.

So for the love of God, at least consider my advice for building a freelance writing  side gig  that you can scale up when the time is right:

  • For Sophie Lizard (a winning Pitchfest bidea): Your Month-by-Month Guide to Starting a Successful Freelance Blogging Business
  • For CO : Quitting Your Job (without Burning Bridges) to Freelance Full Time

Sales 101 & How to Pitch

I can’t think of a better test run for the entrepreneurship side of freelancing than an entry-level job in sales. I learned so much by starting my post-college career with a sales job at Groupon.

My  #UnpopularOpinion  for new freelancers to learn how to properly support themselves?

Put in a few months (to a year) at a sales-driven organization and work your way up from  warm leads sales  (people proactively reaching out to your team to inquire about making a purchase) to  cold calling sales  (reaching out to people who may have never heard of your solution before).

There’s nothing  quite  like the pressure of a  sales manager  and metrics to teach you essential closing and follow up techniques. A sales job will also help you learn how to maintain a consistent pipeline of work opportunities.

My Skillshare class,  How to Negotiate a Six-Figure Freelance Salary  can help you understand the most important sales techniques you should practice if you want to make bank as a freelance writer.

Here’s some of my best sales advice that you can use to find success:

  • For CO: How to Write Article Pitches that Get the Job
  • For The Write Life: Guess What, Freelance Writer? You’re Also a Salesperson
  • For The Marketing Daily Advisor; I Object (if You’re Not Using Buckets)!

&  How to Create Urgency

On that note, these were all written for my client  Cirrus Insight , a multi-purpose sales productivity tool:

  • 15 Sales Books You Must Read (Ideas For Beginners & Pros)
  • The Best Sales Closing Techniques Recommended by Experts
  • Why Every Smart Sales Team is Using Email Tracking
  • How Using a CRM Can Help Grow Your Freelance Business
  • 6 Ways to Overcome Rejection & Close the Sale
  • Freelance Sales 101: The Follow Up Gets the Sale
  • What to Include & Avoid in Sales Emails

Freelance writing involves a special kind of sales: pitching topics to editors and brands.

An effective freelance writing pitch includes the following:

  • What’s in it for me?: Answer this for your prospect.
  • Do your research and pitch an article based on common topic threads you notice are being covered — just make sure to contribute a unique angle.
  • Share industry expertise: A good writer who’s also an industry expert is basically unstoppable (and easier to compensate more).
  • Share 3rd party testimonials in the form of listing off relevant clients that you’ve worked with. Your best published samples will help seal the deal.
  • Engage with brand ahead of time: For example, by sharing their articles on Twitter. Then, call attention to it as part of your pitch. Doing this makes it so you’re more than a writer — you’re a member of their audience.

Here’s an example of how this might look written out:

freelancer assignment help

It  might  seem like I overdid it a bit in this pitch but check out what my recipient said in response! Oftentimes, going the extra mile in your pitch is what sets you apart from others, who might just send a quick note with a sample and call it a day.

Make it as easy as possible for someone to see you as their future writer by connecting the dots in your pitch.

Building Authority (& Backlinks)

When I first committed to learning how to start freelance writing , I applied for a staff writing job at  Search Engine Journal . At the time, I honestly was being a  little  too ambitious — I didn’t have a lot of experience or published works to show off (or learn from).

Although I didn’t get the job, they really liked me and invited me to be a contributor (check out my first article about  duplicate content  on LinkedIn and Medium). I’ll be honest with you: I don’t make any money writing for Search Engine Journal. But all the business it’s helped me to win justifies the time spent on creating quality content.

I’ve talked about my approach to leveraging bylines in detail on the  Clients from Hell podcast , but here’s the TL:DR;

Writing guest posts for high authority blogs can be great inbound marketing for your business, in addition to providing samples that you can leverage to get well-paying gigs. Guest posting can also be a great way to build backlinks to your freelance portfolio website, which will help you to come up in relevant searches.

If you’re unsure where to start reaching out,  Theme Circle  put together an awesome guide for where to guest post, organized by topic and authority (measured by  domain authority , which is important for SEO).

Just as with building up your freelance client roster, the key to success is a good pitch:

  • For WPMU DEV: The Benefits of Guest Blogging: Your Guide to Finding Success

&  How to Design and Craft a Killer Author Bio Readers Will Love

  • For The Blogsmith: How to Get Backlinks (without Being Annoying)
  • For Search Engine Journal: How to Identify High-Quality Guest Blogging Opportunities

This is a good lesson to learn early on:

You’re not going to make  six-figures freelancing  if you exclusively pitch to publicly posted jobs.

I really have a problem with the fact that most job board postings aren’t transparent when it comes to payment. You’re expected to spend time customizing the perfect pitch, but oftentimes, your efforts result in an invite to write a free test piece. It only goes downhill from there.

Yeah… no thanks.

But there are some hidden gems if you stay on top of job board postings. I started writing for  Sprout Social  after responding to a job post I found on ProBlogger.

Here are my best job board-related resources to help you with how to start freelance writing:

  • Job board: ProBlogger
  • Job board: Freelance Writing Morning Coffee Newsletter
  • For CO: Forget Freelance Sites: Connect with Other Freelancers to Find New Jobs
  • For Freelancer FAQs: Are You Wasting Time Applying to the Wrong Jobs?

Facebook Groups: to Get Feedback, Enjoy Camaraderie & Share Opportunities

As a freelancer, you miss out on the opportunity to lean on coworkers when you have a problem to work out or just need a break from the grind.

I’ve found the following Facebook groups to be especially useful for finding online “coworkers” and getting feedback for how to start freelance writing successfully:

  • Word Workers
  • The Copywriter Cafe
  • Goal Diggers Podcast Insiders
  • Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing

The modern freelance writer needs to at least have an  awareness  of SEO.

My Skillshare class,  SEO for Bloggers & Solopreneurs , provides a straightforward process for conducting simple keyword research and effectively implementing keywords within a blog article.

These articles represent some of my most relevant SEO tips for freelance writers:

  • For WPMU DEV: WordPress SEO Tools for Every Budget

So if you want motivation to constantly be striving for the next level of what you can achieve when you learn how to start freelance writing, I encourage you to sign up for their newsletters and pay attention to their ideas and processes.

On that note…

If you’ve enjoyed this article so far, sign up for  my newsletter , where I share my best content marketing tips.

Everyone fakes it until they make it in some areas, but I only ever feel confident raising my rates after I’ve taken on projects and clients that push me out of my comfort zone, teaching me something new.

Accounting & Bookkeeping Basics

Here’s another lesson I want you to take into learning how to start freelance writing:

If you’re not good with numbers, or organization, outsource your bookkeeping and tax preparation  as soon as possible .

It was the best thing I ever did. These tools and resources helped me then — and now:

  • CO: This freemium tool offers an all-in-one solution for proposals, contracts, invoices, expenses, subscription payments, and time tracking.
  • For CO: Freelance Accounting 101: How to Thrive When Payment is Irregular
  • Quickbooks is the foundation of all my accounting processes. You can start on one of their basic plans, then upgrade to gain access to various features (like payroll processing) as your needs grow.
  • Gusto handles full-service payroll needs, which I use to initiate payment properly between my S-Corp and myself as an employee (and to pay my contractors).

Oh, the stories I could tell you about dealing with assholes…

Here are the most important things to do from early on to protect yourself and your valuable time:

  • Detail the scope of work and payment terms in a contract.
  • Don’t begin work until the contract is signed and you’ve received payment upfront. I recommend at least 50% for big projects, the full amount for anything less than $1000 worth of work.

Repeat after me: these are  non-negotiables .

I’m hoping that this specific advice for how to start freelance writing will save you from the worst offenses:

  • For CO: Handling an Overdue Invoice & Other Get Paid Strategies & Freelance Contract Template: Essential Contract Clauses
  • For Search Engine Journal: 25 Warning Signs That You’re Dealing with a Client from Hell
  • For The Write Life: 5 Ways to Bounce Back When You Lose a Freelance-Writing Client
  • For Torque: How to Deal with Scope Creep
  • For GoDaddy: Habits of business owners who get paid on time

To find freelance writing success, you must first get in control of  yourself .

You have to learn how to find a work/life balance. You have to learn how make time to enjoy the perks of freelancing (traveling, taking a nap, wearing yoga pants, etc.) without  completely  taking advantage of them (to the point where you miss deadlines).

It’s a delicate balance and this advice for how to start freelance writing involves my best tips for self-management:

  • For CO: Be Your Own Boss: 10 Rules to Create for Yourself as a Freelancer
  • For Marketing Daily Advisor: Should You Join a Mastermind Group?
  • For Planio: How to Focus Better: Overcoming Distractions & 10 Ways to Be Productive When Working from Home & How to Find Your Perfect Work-Life Balance

I didn’t hit six-figures until I hired contractors to help me run various aspects of my business.

Once you’re ready to level up (or ideally, right before), check out my best advice for outsourcing various aspects of your freelance writing activities:

  • A series for WPMU DEV: How to Vet & Hire a WordPress Subcontractor & How to Onboard Contractors to Your WordPress Business & How to Grow Your WordPress Business with Virtual Assistants
  • For Cirrus Insight: https://www.cirrusinsight.com/blog/do-i-need-an-assistant

So glad you liked the Infographic! My friends at Easel.ly made it and they did a fantastic job.

To answer your question: when I first started my freelance business, I considered insurance but ultimately ruled it out as something I really needed — especially now that I’m more focused on creating content that goes through multiple rounds of reviews and is approved by the client before it goes live (vs social media where I feel like stuff goes wrong all the time!).

I’m so glad it was helpful to you Jean-Christophe!

Thanks so much, Nick! Nice seeing you at the Denver Bloggers Club event the other day. 🙂

Deciding to become a freelance writer is exciting, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming and confusing at first.

You’ve explored your passion for writing, dabbled in creating content, and maybe even shared some pieces on a personal blog or self-publishing platform.

But what comes next? How do you bridge the gap between aspiring to work as a freelance writer and landing your first paid gig?

We’re here to answer exactly that question with our guide on where to find freelance writing jobs as a beginner.

Below, you’ll find 40+ websites, job boards, communities, and newsletters to help you find plenty of new freelance writing gigs. You’ll also find platforms we’ve used to hire freelancers in the past.

Let’s jump in!

Traditional job boards: LinkedIn, Indeed, and Glassdoor

(🏅We’ve hired from here)

LinkedIn , Indeed , and Glassdoor are some of the most reliable places to find freelance writing jobs, even for beginners.

Simply sign up for an account (you can use your existing Google account to sign up on LinkedIn, Indeed, or Glassdoor or your Facebook account to sign up on Glassdoor), and then use their job search features to find writing jobs.

Try search terms like “writing,” “writer,” “blog writer,” “freelance writer,” “entry-level freelance writer,” or “entry-level writer.”

On LinkedIn, you can narrow down your search by setting the “Experience level” filter to “Entry level” and “Job type” to “Contract” for beginner-friendly freelance gigs. On Indeed, filter by Job type > Contract for freelance work.

Pro tip: Make the most of LinkedIn by creating a compelling profile that showcases your writing skills. Highlight your relevant experience, include links to samples of your work, and add a professional headshot.

Also, follow companies and individuals related to your niche (such as publishers or content marketing agencies) for networking opportunities. Engage with their posts and consider reaching out with personalized connection requests to build a strong professional network.

Upwork is a freelancing platform that connects individuals with clients looking for various services, including writing. Writers of all levels can find gigs on Upwork, but it’s especially useful for those just starting out.

First, sign up for an Upwork account and create a profile detailing your skills and experience.

Next, use the search function to find jobs. Filter results by job category (e.g., Content Writing or Sales & Marketing Copywriting), type (hourly or fixed-price), client history (i.e., how many hires they’ve made), project length, and hours per week.

When you find a job you’d like to apply to, submit a proposal and wait for it to be approved.

Pro tip: Personalize your proposals by emphasizing your unique strengths — such as your knowledge of SEO, ability to meet tight deadlines, or expertise in a certain industry (e.g., technology or finance).

Freelance Writing Jobs

Freelance Writing Jobs features job posts for freelance writers from all over the internet. Listings are updated regularly, and you can narrow your search by job location, category, and date posted.

You don’t need an account to browse the site. However, since it collects job listings from across the web, you won’t actually apply through Freelance Writing Jobs itself. As a result, you may need to sign up for an account on a different platform to apply for the gigs that interest you.

Contently is a creative marketing platform that helps freelancers connect with brands seeking top-notch writing services. It regularly posts opportunities from a wide range of industries — from tech to biopharma to medicine and more.

All you need to get started is a Contently account. It’s free to sign up, and you can begin creating your portfolio immediately. Add your best samples, outline your experience and skills, and upload a profile picture.

Make sure to turn on the “Available to work” setting and set “View as” to “Everyone.” You’ll then be ready to start landing clients.

Guru is a freelancing platform where you can find various writing jobs.

To get started, register for a free Guru account and create a comprehensive profile outlining your rates, experience, and skills.

You can then search for jobs, filtering by payment terms (hourly or fixed rate), employer spend (i.e., how much the client has budgeted for the project), location, category, and number of quotes received.

Once you find an opportunity that interests you, tap the “Send Quote” button to bid on the project with your custom rate.

Behance , owned by Adobe, is a platform where creative professionals can showcase their portfolios and find new work. While it’s most popular with graphic designers, illustrators, and other artists, Behance is also great for freelance writers.

The platform shares many job opportunities, including ones in writing that you can find using keywords like “writer” and “content creator.” Behance lets you filter jobs by “Freelance” or “Full-Time” — but we’ve found that some gigs listed as full-time accept applications from freelancers, too.

Simply sign up for a free account and start browsing gigs.

A job board specializing in remote and flexible opportunities, FlexJobs is fantastic for freelance writers of all experience levels.

The site requires a subscription ($9.95/week, $24.95/month, $39.95/three months, or $59.95/year). With it, you can access tens of thousands of job opportunities and search for the ones that fit your exact preferences.

Filter by job category, work schedule, experience level, location, job type, and more. You can even view opportunities from companies with accolades, such as Great Place to Work Award recipients and those who’ve made the Fortune 500 list.

FlexJobs can also automatically notify you when it posts new listings that meet your criteria.

JournalismJobs.com

JournalismJobs.com is a site that posts jobs in journalism and media — including freelance writing opportunities at digital publications, newspapers, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations.

It’s free to create an account, and you can sign up to receive daily freelance job alerts in your preferred industry and location.

Robert Half

Robert Half is a recruitment agency that helps professionals find their next opportunity.

It posts new jobs to its board daily, and we’ve found that the best search terms to find freelance writing gigs are “freelance content writer” and “freelance copywriter.” Robert Half advertises both remote and in-person (within the United States) opportunities, which you can filter by state.

You won’t need an account to browse jobs, but it’s a good idea to sign up for one (it’s free) before applying. You can also upload your resume, and a Robert Half team member will contact you if you’re a good match for open positions.

ProBlogger is a platform dedicated to blogging and freelance writing. It has a job board featuring writing opportunities from various niches, with new listings added regularly.

With the Advanced Job Search function , you can filter listings by keyword, location, type (e.g., freelance), category (such as blog writing or ghostwriting), company type (from studios to large organizations), and date posted.

You can search for gigs without an account, but you’ll need to sign up for a free Candidate account to start applying.

Creative Circle

Creative Circle provides staffing and consulting services to those in creative industries. It also has a job board and various resources for job-seekers, including freelance writers.

Search for jobs by title, skill, or keyword, and filter by type (e.g., freelance), location (remote or a physical location in the US or Canada), and date posted.

Creative Circle refreshes its job board daily, and the recruitment process is straightforward:

  • Apply for an open role, and Creative Circle will set up an interview if your experience is a match.
  • Creative Circle shares your resume and writing work with the client to see if you’re a good fit.
  • You await the client’s decision, and if you land the gig, Creative Circle will handle all the necessary paperwork.

Hubstaff Talent

Hubstaff Talent connects freelancers with clients looking for remote talent around the world. The platform has a client network in the thousands, and new opportunities are added to its job board nearly every day.

Start by setting up your Hubstaff Talent freelancer profile — adding your personal details, experience, skills, writing samples, hourly rate, and how many hours per week you can dedicate to freelance work. You can also add your social media links, resume, and profile picture.

Then, browse the job board for freelance writing opportunities. There are various filters to narrow your search, including experience level, location, and project budget.

Mediabistro

Mediabistro posts career opportunities for professionals in the creative and media industries — e.g., graphic designers, digital marketing managers, reporters, photographers, editors, writers, and others.

Its job board boasts hundreds of listings — including ones from major organizations like Dotdash Meredith and Hearst Communications, two of the largest digital and print publishers in the US. You can sort jobs by type, experience level, duration (e.g., freelance, part-time, full-time, etc.), and location.

To find freelance writing jobs, you needn’t enter any keywords. Simply click “Writing & Editing” in the “Job Type” dropdown and set “Duration” to “Freelance.”

Pro tip: Once you’ve set these filters, tap the navy-blue “Create Job Alerts” button to receive an email when Mediabistro adds new jobs that fit the criteria.

Companies can then contact you for work. A ClearVoice team member might also reach out to you directly about completing writing assignments.

How to Become a Freelance Writer

If you’ve ever wanted to help hone a brand’s social media voice or get published in your favorite magazine, freelance writing is an avenue to make that happen. A freelance writer is able to take on a variety of assignments, all coming down to their ability to write and communicate effectively given a set of parameters. Some treat freelancing as a way to make extra money while others turn it into a full-time profession.

Breaking into the business of being a freelance writer takes many different shapes, whether you go from a full-time writer employed by a company to a project-by-project case or create a website to spotlight your abilities as a writer and advertise you’re looking for work. Additionally, there are many niches of freelance writing that apply to a variety of types of businesses .

There’s so much to talk about when it comes to how to become a freelance writer and the opportunities available to make money as a freelance writer too. Hopefully I can give a bit of an overview to get your journey started:

How I became a freelance writer

The path to become a freelance writer is different for everybody. Every writer takes a different path to becoming a freelancer, but you may find the story of Gabe B., an editorial writer with 10 years of freelancing experience, helpful:

“I originally studied journalism in college, where I learned the foundations of writing for newspapers, magazines, news websites, broadcast news, and more. There was also light instruction on freelance writing, but most familiarity with the practice came from actually doing it. During college, I freelance wrote a couple of articles for smaller publications, which was a great experience in terms of refining story ideas and working with editors.

After graduating, I accepted a fellowship at a news startup. Once that ended, I had to figure out my next steps. While I was hoping to land a full-time job, that did not immediately happen. Instead, I started freelance writing for another news startup. They could only offer me 20 hours a week, but I took it. During those 20 hours a week, I wrote a couple of news blogs and one bigger feature story. Eventually, I was offered a full-time position with the publication because they were now familiar with my work and there was a job opening.

Since that first job, I’ve had a number of other full-time positions at various publishers. While almost all my time and work went toward these jobs, I did freelance writing for other places every so often. The policy on freelance writing with a full-time job differs from place to place, but usually the rule is that you can take on a freelance assignment as long as it is work that wouldn’t typically fit under what you cover at your full-time commitment. For example, if you write about beauty, you will likely be able to take on a freelance assignment about food.

A few years ago, I split ways from my last full-time editorial job. Since then, I have found freelance writing jobs through a variety of methods. My primary one is pitching editors at different publications story ideas. This is probably one of the most traditional aspects of freelance writing in the journalism world. Pitching requires a lot of work, flexibility, and especially a thick skin because many of your story pitches are likely to be passed on. But once you find a home for a story idea you crafted, it’s a very fulfilling experience.

Every so often, I am also fortunate enough to be contacted by potential employers for freelance assignments. I have either worked with these editors in the past or are familiar with my previous work and ability to execute. Being asked to take on freelance writing may happen if you have a website touting your abilities and showcasing your past work. This gives a possible employer or editor an idea of how likely you are a fit for a certain assignment and the means to contact you to gauge interest and availability.

Since departing from my full-time job, I have taken on many different freelance writing opportunities. My first experiences were with editorial writing, but I have now taken on copywriting, social media writing, and more. They have also been about a wide range of subjects and niches.”

Types of freelance writing

There are many different categories under the umbrella of freelance writing. Of course, there are certain qualities that many of these categories share. The most important one is that all types of freelance writing require a solid grasp of baseline skills and mechanics such as spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

But considering the wide spectrum of freelance writing assignments available to writers, there’s surely something for everyone. Keep in mind that along with the various formats freelance writing can take, there are any number of topics that can be covered. For example, let’s say you’re a writer interested in health. You might write a reported piece about funding for mental health resources for a newspaper or magazine as one assignment and then write copy for a startup that created an app monitoring healthy sleeping habits as another.

Regardless of what subjects you are most capable of writing about, there are many different types of freelance writing.

Editorial writing

This is arguably the most long-established form of freelance writing. Writing for a magazine, newspaper, or news website falls under editorial writing. With this type of writing, you’ll be held to journalistic standards and ethics. In most cases, you’ll have a story assignment and execute it. Some articles will require you to report, meaning pulling together research from various credible sources and interviewing people to use their quotes in the story.

Publications will often hire a freelance writer because they know that writer is well-versed in a specific subject or has access to certain reporting. There are also opinion pieces or “ hot takes ,” which are less about being objective and presenting the facts and more about pulling together various evidence points, analyzing, and making an argument.

example of how to become a freelance writer by being an editorial writer

Copywriting

Copywriting is another large subcategory of freelance writing. It’s pretty much everywhere without you even realizing it. As the American Writers and Artists Institute describes the craft, “copywriting is the process of writing persuasive marketing and promotional materials that motivate people to take some form of action.” These actions include donating to a cause, signing up for a newsletter, making a purchase, clicking on a profile, and much more.

Unlike editorial writing, you usually won’t be pitching copywriting ideas. In most cases, you’ll have to apply for copywriting jobs. If you have experience with copywriting, it’s a great idea to have that listed on your professional CV website or have a portfolio of your copywriting work available to view. That way if a business is looking for a copywriter, they can use your website as a resource to see if you might be a potential freelance writer they want to work with.

Content Writing

Content writing is a bit between editorial and copywriting. Instead of telling a story through the lens of journalism, content writing is for marketing purposes. Content writers are still storytellers, but the usual goal is to develop brand awareness and engage readers rather than to persuade someone to specifically buy something.

Overall, content writing will be longer form content such as blogs and articles. The people over UX Planet have some pretty digestive infographics breaking down the difference between copywriters and content writers.

example of a landing page to show how to become a freelance writer that writes copy

Social media writing

Blending together aspects of editorial, copy, and content, social media writing is specifically creating copy that will be shared on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and more. If it’s for a publication, it often will reflect the journalistic standards and ethics that the publisher holds itself to. But social media writing for a company will likely be more focused on simply helping build brand recognition on social media that will eventually also hopefully convert to more sales.

Social media writing often taps into trending topics to stay relevant in social buzz. That might mean partaking in the latest meme or news cycle. However, a lot of social media writing is evergreen.

example of how to become a freelance writer for social media showing a social post

Technical writing

At its core, technical writing is a type of writing used to explain complicated, specialized, and technical information to the reader. The most common types of technical writing you have likely interacted with are instructional materials from a new gadget or software manuals. TechWhirl goes into the nitty gritty of what technical writing is.

Business Writing

Business writing is communication materials used in a professional setting. As the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Writing Center explains , it includes “genres such as policy recommendations, advertisements, press releases, application letters, emails, and memos.”

Some businesses will employ freelance writers to create a white paper, an official report that details the company’s mission statement and informs potential customers.

Ghostwriting

Ghostwriting is when books, tweets, blogs, or any other written material is credited to someone different from who did the actual writing. Celebrities, politicians, and other high-profile individuals will use ghostwriters for their autobiographies. More recently, they will have ghostwriters create content for their social media channels.

Benefits of freelance writing

Freelance writing can be a bit intimidating at first, but once you become comfortable you’ll find that there are a number of benefits that come with the job.

Set your own schedule

The only time restrictions you’ll have as a freelance writer are deadlines. Otherwise, you’ll be able to work whenever you want. This is great for people who don’t enjoy the typical 9 to 5 work day. Meanwhile, other people who like a structured work day can still embrace that mentality. But because you’re setting your own schedule, you can sleep in whenever you want, run errands during the middle of the day, and many more things that come with the flexibility of being a freelance writer.

Work wherever you want

Because you aren’t tied to an office building or even a specific place, you can practically work wherever you want as long as you have the equipment needed to complete assignments. Becoming a digital nomad will allow you to see the world while still making money online .

Manage your own workload

Depending on what your financial situation is, you can work as little or as much as you’d like. If life is fairly hectic and you have other things going on, you can choose to only take on a few assignments. Meanwhile, if you are looking to keep yourself extremely busy, you can hustle to get as many assignments as possible.

Decide what you want write

As a freelance writer, you can be selective with what you want to write about (see our guide on how to start a service business ). You may only want to take on stories about a certain subject matter. Or, if you want to learn more about other genres and topics, you can try expanding your horizons and pitch things that are out of your typical wheelhouse.

Steps to becoming a freelance writer

Now that I’ve run through the basics of freelance writing, I’ll touch on some of the steps to becoming a freelance writer. Although everyone has different backgrounds and experiences, these are some general guidelines.

Setting up an organizational system

Creating a freelancer website, choosing your specialty, securing a freelance writing assignment or job, setting your rate, staying communicative.

Everyone has varying levels of organization, but creating a system will help dramatically when it comes to freelance writing. You’ll want to keep track of details such as pitches or reach-out emails that you’ve sent out, assignments that you’ve been given, their requirements (especially the word count and deadline), the rate, and invoicing instructions. Jotting this down in a notebook, Google Doc, spreadsheet, or task management system such as Trello are all different ways to organize your work life as a freelance writer.

You’ll want to show your previous work and what you’re capable of by creating a freelance website , which will also show that you have an active presence online. Your website can take different forms, but there are two that are most helpful if you are trying to become a freelance writer. If you don’t have any writing samples published yet, using your website as a blog can demonstrate your writing skills. And if you already have work, be sure to have your portfolio on your website or links to your published projects. This will also spotlight the types of writing you’ve done and the topics you have expertise with.

Tip: Try out this sleek and stylish content writer website template , which caters to writers of all types. If you want something more personalized, consider hiring a Wix designer .

Whichever camp you fall into, it’s good to have links to your social media accounts so potential employers can see your voice on social. This is particularly vital for those that want to get into social media writing.

Generally, your website’s domain name will incorporate your name or business name. And of course, have a contact form or email listed on your website easily accessible in case someone would like to reach out for a freelance writing opportunity.

While being a generalist can be beneficial when you’re more established, it’s important to figure out what you want to write about. That way once you start getting more freelance assignments, you’re building a niche of what you excel at and a portfolio of relevant work. This goes for both the type of freelance writing and the subject material of what you’re writing about.

The next logical step is to finally secure a freelance writing assignment. As aforementioned, nailing a freelance writing opportunity will usually depend on the type of freelance writing. For editorial freelancing, you can start pitching editors to see if they’ll commission one of your story ideas.

Meanwhile, other freelance writing jobs for something like copywriting or technical writing will likely require you to submit an application. You can look for these sorts of jobs on places such as Indeed, Monster, LinkedIn, and more. There are also more specialized job boards for freelance writing opportunities such as Contena , BloggingPro , IWriter , and others.

One thing that new freelance writers don’t realize they need to do is set their rate. The biggest factor is usually your experience level. If you’re new to the industry, you’ll probably be on the lower end. But once you build a reputation, you can start increasing how much you charge for your work. Rates depend on the type of freelance writing–for example, editorial writing usually pays less than content writing. Also, a bigger, more profitable company or client might have a bigger budget to spend on freelance writers. While keeping all these factors in mind, also know that you should always be paid for your work, no matter what skill level you are at. Do not be afraid to advocate for yourself.

Being able to communicate effectively in a freelance piece is foundational and just as pivotal is staying communicative with your employers and contacts. If you are emailing someone about a freelance piece and they ask a set of questions, make sure you answer all of them in a timely manner. This communication is cardinal throughout the entire freelance writing engagement, whether it’s addressing edits on a piece or updating someone on how a project is going.

Managing freelancers? Start here.

Caeleigh MacNeil contributor headshot

Managing freelancers doesn’t have to be daunting. In this article, we’ve outlined five key processes to master for effective freelancer management—so you can outsource tasks without creating extra work for your team.

Freelancers are self-employed workers who aren’t committed to a single organization long-term. They’re often experts in their craft, honing their skills across different companies and projects.

That’s where freelancer management comes in.

What is freelancer management?

Freelancer management is the process of building and maintaining a team of freelancers. It includes everything you need to do to keep your freelance engine humming—from administrative tasks like invoice tracking to managerial duties like onboarding and communication.

At its most basic, freelancer management comprises these five responsibilities:

Finding freelancers

Onboarding freelancers

Sending and receiving assignments

Tracking invoices and budget

Managing freelancer relationships

Managing freelancers vs. in-house employees: What’s the difference?

Managing freelancers is different from managing in-house team members. That’s because you typically hire freelancers for a specific task or project. Plus, freelancers often choose to contract with multiple companies at the same time, so your work isn’t their only focus. For that reason, they often work more flexible hours than regular employees—focusing on deadline-driven assignments rather than being available during specific work hours.

On the other hand, full-time employees fill an ongoing role that may evolve over time. They’re more of a long-term investment, requiring a significant onboarding period to get them up to speed on company processes and culture. Thanks to that upfront investment, in-house employees have the knowledge and resources they need to learn, grow, and take ownership of complex projects. On the flip side, freelancers have a more specific focus and should come into a project with the skills they need. For them, onboarding is much less intensive and focuses more on understanding the assignment you’ve hired them for.

Managing freelancers: 5 steps to master, with examples

Managing freelancers can be daunting, especially if you haven’t dealt much with contractors in the past. But while there are a lot of moving parts, you can break freelancer management down into five concrete steps—which, when mastered, will help you rev up your freelance engine in no time.

1. Find quality talent

Finding the right freelancers can be tough, but it’s easier if you know where to look. Here’s how to start searching:

Use your network: Ask colleagues about freelancers they’ve worked with in the past. Are there any contractors they can recommend?

Ask your current freelancers: If you already work with a contractor and are looking to hire more, ask if they have any colleagues who are open to taking on more work. Freelancers tend to know and work with other freelancers, so they’re an amazing resource for referrals.

Post on social media: Advertise your freelance opening on LinkedIn, Twitter, or another platform. Sites like Facebook often have groups specifically for freelancers to connect and share their craft—for example, groups for freelance writers. Try joining and posting your opening there.

Outsource your search: Thanks to the gig economy, freelance platforms like Upwork and Fiverr are growing. If you’re in a time crunch and need help fast, these specialized platforms help connect you with freelance talent around the world.

When reaching out to potential freelancers, it pays to be very specific about the project you’re hiring for. To set expectations and avoid miscommunications down the line, be sure to communicate an overview of the role, required qualifications, and a rough project timeline . For example, here’s a sample outreach message from a company looking to hire freelance copywriters:

Acme Company is looking to bring on additional freelance copywriters in anticipation of increased project demands. We’re specifically looking for individuals with experience writing content within the software industry who can match our company’s tone and voice. This is an ongoing freelance opportunity, with the potential for 40+ hours/month of consistent work.

Copywriters must be able to:

Provide clean copy in line with our style guide and company voice.

Write emails and UI copy for mobile apps.

Incorporate feedback from product managers.

If this sounds like something you qualify for, please send your resume and any relevant samples to [email protected]

When you’re doing cold outreach, it’s a good idea to ask for references, work samples, or a brief sample assignment. That way, you can verify that freelancers have the required qualifications before bringing them on board.

2. Set up a freelancer onboarding process

While freelancer onboarding is less intensive than employee onboarding, it still takes some upfront effort to get contractors up to speed. Creating a standard freelancer onboarding process can save you time and stress in the future. Instead of starting from scratch each time a freelancer joins, follow a predefined process to ensure new contractors have the information they need to successfully execute your project requirements.

Here are some key pieces to include in your freelancer onboarding process:

A contract: This is a written agreement that outlines project deliverables, payment terms, and your project timeline. Having freelancers sign a detailed contract helps avoid misunderstandings down the road.

Invoicing instructions: Every company handles freelancer invoicing a bit differently. To make the invoicing process seamless, provide instructions for how and when freelancers should submit invoices, plus how to send necessary tax forms and payment details. You can also include an invoice template to ensure contractors provide all the necessary information.

A project brief : Your brief outlines all the information a freelancer needs to know in order to get started on a project. It should include a project description, a list of deliverables , the project deadline, guidelines for executing the project, and instructions on submitting finished work. The more information you provide about your expectations and requirements, the more likely it is that freelancers will be able to produce what you’re looking for.

When it comes to hiring freelancers, templates are your friend. For example, you can work with your internal legal team to create a template contract and project brief, then fill in key details for every new freelancer. It’s also helpful to templatize onboarding communications to minimize back-and-forth and ensure you’re giving contractors all the information they need.

See below for an example onboarding message, but always check with your internal HR and legal teams before implementing any contracts.

3. Create a system to send and receive assignments

Sending and receiving assignments is a big part of freelancer management. To make things run smoothly, set up a standard process that all freelancers can use to see their tasks and submit finished work. For example, in Asana you can share a project with your freelancers and then assign them tasks with specific deadlines, so it’s crystal clear what needs to be done by when.

Creating an assignment management system helps avoid extra communication and work. Instead of sending separate emails for every new assignment, you can just add and assign work in your task management tool . Then, contractors can attach their finished work to each task. As an added bonus, this also gives you a bird’s-eye view of which tasks are assigned and completed—so you can see project progress in real time.

4. Standardize your budget-tracking process

Budget tracking is a mainstay of freelancer management. You need to be able to determine how much money you have to spend at the beginning of each month—then assign freelance work accordingly. And at the end of the month, it’s equally important to compare invoices against your projected budget to make sure you’re not overspending.

Creating a standardized budget-tracking process helps you check all these boxes each month. Here’s how to get started:

Determine your invoicing cadence. For example, you can have freelancers submit invoices bi-weekly or at the end of each month. When all freelancers submit their invoices at the same time, it’s easier for you to predict and keep track of spend.

Create a project budget document. This should have space to track projected vs. actual spend for every invoicing period (every two weeks if freelancers submit bi-weekly invoices or every month if they submit monthly invoices).

Send assignments based on how much money you have available to spend. This is easy to calculate if you pay freelancers per deliverable or project. If you pay hourly, be sure to provide guidance on how many hours freelancers should be working.

Remind your freelance team to submit their invoices at the end of each invoicing period.

Collect invoices and use them to document how much you’ve actually spent, compared to the estimated spend in your budget.

5. Manage freelancer relationships

Freelancer workers have the flexibility to pick and choose which clients they want to work for. That means it’s in your best interest to cultivate a strong relationship with contractors—because the better your relationship, the more they’ll want to work with you.

Here’s how to build rapport and trust with your freelance team:

Practice emotional intelligence: Emotional intelligence helps you understand how others feel so you can collaborate more effectively. When you apply emotional intelligence skills to your interactions with freelancers, you can communicate with empathy and build stronger relationships over time.

Don’t micromanage: Freelancers work on their own schedule, so it’s not realistic to expect them to be available all the time. It’s ok to check in occasionally, but ultimately you need to trust that freelancers will complete their work on time.

Build feedback into the process: Nothing is perfect on the first try. When working with freelancers, it’s important to build at least one round of feedback into your workflow. For example, have freelancers submit a first draft so you can provide any necessary notes before the project moves forward.

Create communication guidelines : Be clear about which communication channels freelancers should use, how they can get in touch with you, and how you plan to share information with them. For example, you might use a combination of email and instant messaging—or consolidate all communication in one project management platform . This is especially important if you manage a remote team and can’t meet with freelancers face-to-face.

Set concrete deadlines: Clarity is extra important when dealing with freelancers, because miscommunication can waste time and money for both parties. When starting a project, be very clear about when work is due and how freelancers should submit assignments.

Keep track of your relationships: Create a freelancer database

When you put so much effort into building strong connections, it’s important to keep track of all those relationships. That way, you can easily reach out to contractors you’ve worked with in the past when new projects come up.

Creating a freelancer database helps you build and track your freelancer network. It’s a single source of truth where you can see everyone you’re currently working with, individuals you’ve worked with in the past, and any potential new freelancers you haven’t worked with yet. That way, you can always find the right person for a particular assignment.

Here’s what to include in your freelancer database:

Each freelancer’s name and contact information

Preferred rates

Strengths and areas of expertise

Projects they’ve worked on in the past

[product ui] Freelancer database (lists)

Freelancer management, simplified

Managing freelancers doesn’t have to be a daunting process. As long as you have the right processes and infrastructure set up, you can build and maintain a healthy freelance team. All it takes is a bit of planning and a hefty dose of confidence.

More From Forbes

Let’s help big corporates trust the freelance revolution.

A recent Forbes article by Matt Mottola entitled, “Every freelance platform needs an enterprise strategy” was a popular read last year. The title and story line are accurate without doubt. Big corporate clientship of freelancing offers several important advantages to freelancers and to the marketplaces that support them.

For example, Howdy found that big corporates offered Latam freelancers higher pay and more attractive working conditions. Michael Kearns, CEO of Virtasant notes that big companies are more prepared to engage freelancers on larger and longer projects. Codemonk recognizes the benefit of deeper, longer term, strategic relationships. Enterprises are also more willing to think global as freelance platforms Indielist, Uncompany , and Ollo discovered working together on behalf of a large global technology company. G2i and Andela are two of the platforms that recognized the potential of Enterprise to drive significant revenue growth. Expert powerhouse and Redegate found that big company clients also supported collateral opportunity in areas like expert networks or corporate education. Flock notes that Enterprise growth is a reputation builder.

A number of reasons led the freelance revolution to be more quickly embraced by startups and small and medium sized (SMB) organizations. Not surprisingly, as Scotland’s Gigged.ai CEO Rich Wilson points out, SMBs organizations are more likely to experience urgent talent gaps as they grow and strategically pivot. Claus Leinoe, CEO and founder of Denmark’s Jelber finds they are more open to temporary talent and contingent staffing by necessity. Norway’s Folq points out that SMB clients find freelancing an efficient means of attracting difficult-to-find and expensive-to-own fulltime talent when in fact they’re only needed periodically or “on demand”.

But change is in the wind. A 2024 Malt survey of 5000 European freelancers found that big corporates – what pundits generally mean by “enterprise” – provided about half of freelancer’s work in 2023 overall, and specifically 34% for German freelancers and 51% for French freelancers. By contrast, in 2021, Enterprise represented only 20% in Germany and 14% in France . It’s a meaningful change in a short period of time.

As Michael Solomon, co-CEO of 10x Management explained, working with Enterprise companies is different. The sales cycle is longer. Requirements are greater. Competition is more intense. There are more steps, more decision makers, and more gatekeepers. Compliance is a huge concern and, hence, the psychology is different. Big corporates tend to see freelancing as imposing a series of risks and potential liabilities that need to be managed. For the big corporate crowd, freelancing remains a work in progress, not yet fully formed or professionalized.

In turn, the challenge for freelance marketplaces interested in expanding their big corporate business is this: How to demonstrate the ability to manage the important risk factors that stand between freelancers and Enterprise clients. As a first step, it’s important to clarify what these risk factors are:

Business continuity risk – Does the platform have the financial means to remain in business for the foreseeable future?

Talent risk – How can we be sure the platform talent meets my requirements for technical competence and experience?

Scale risk – Does the platform have the talent and systems to expand as our needs increase?

Cultural risk – Can I feel confident that freelancers on the platform have the interpersonal skills to work effectively with our staff?

Retention risk – How can we be sure platform talent will remain fully engaged until the work is completed?

IP risk – How can we be sure the platform and talent respect our requirements for confidentiality?

Compliance risk – How can we ensure we are operating legally and protected from suit or fine as the protection an agency or company would offer?

Outcome risk – Will the platform commit to delivering the outcomes promised, and doing what’s necessary if outcomes are missed?

Insight risk – Will the platform offer guidance that helps us (HR) manage total talent e.g., insights about future talent demand, high in-demand skills, compensation trends.

New-to-me risk – Will the platform protect me (as the decision maker). Working with freelancers feels risky. Will you help mitigate the risks to me and my team?

Freelancers can’t wish away these risk factors, but they can understand them. Success working with both SMB and Enterprise clients depends on how well freelancers and their freelance marketplaces understand the concerns and take action accordingly.

To help freelance marketplaces to better understand the variety and intensity of risk-related concerns, Humancloud undertook a pilot study working with freelance marketplace CEOs and executives in the US and internationally. Leaders from the DACH region as well as Germany, Benelux, UK, France, Spain, and Latam participated. Marketplace executives were asked to share their ratings of the risk factors for both SMB and Enterprises using a five point scale where 1=not a risk factor, and 5=significant risk factor.

Here's what the survey found:

A quick review of the data from this pilot study points out several risk factors that are shared by both SMB and Enterprise companies, three key areas where Enterprise worries are meaningfully higher than SMB, and two new risks worth understanding:

First, there are many risk related concerns that freelance marketplace executives see as common to both SMB and Enterprise companies. Six of the 10 risk factors were judged to be important enough to be at least moderately important as a consideration in establishing working relationships with freelance marketplaces.

The areas where risk was generally seen as low was cultural risk and insight risk. The worry that freelancers lack the skills to act professionally and effectively cooperate was low. The expectation that marketplace might not provide guidance, education, or research on broader talent issues and challenges was also deemed a lesser concern.

Four risk factors were described as significant for both SMBs and Enterprises:

· Talent risk

· Retention risk

· Outcome risk

· New-to-me risk

It’s no surprise that access to high quality talent and the commitment to doing the complete job (retention risk) were shared concerns. It’s worth noting that clients – both SMB and Enterprise - increasingly expect freelance marketplaces to meet specific outcomes rather than simply broker a relationship between freelancers and clients.

This is a material change, as is the expectation that platforms will act in ways and provide support that enables HR and other big corporate clients to reduce their personal risk in selecting a freelance solution. “New-to-me” risk is an important factor that marketplaces must incorporate into their service.

The pilot survey also found a number of areas where big corporates are expected to be more risk sensitive:

· Scale risk

· Compliance risk

The first of these is scale risk, the ability to expand and contract services as required by clients. Big corporates are keen to leverage successful work, and admired talent, over their larger base, and expect preferred freelance marketplaces to have the scale to be able to support this.

IP risk is a second critical area. Enterprises are seen as more sensitive to misbehavior or inappropriate sharing of confidential client information, and the consequences of IP issues is seen as more problematic.

And as expected, compliance risk is a big concern for the Enterprise segment; after all, the size and potential cost of problems is magnified. For example, Nike may have misclassified thousands of freelancers or other temporary office workers and now faces a potential tax fine of $530 million . A 2022 settlement with the State of New Jersey cost Uber over $100 million.

It's also worth mentioning that two newly identified risk areas received strong votes of affirmation in the pilot study. For example, Insight risk – will the marketplace provide insight and support in utilizing freelancers – was one of the few areas where SMBs were expected to be more demanding of assistance than big corporates. Expect both client categories to want more platform support.

Finally, new-to-me risk is an obvious, important, and rarely mentioned risk factor. HR’s lack of involvement with freelancers until recently is indicative of real uncertainty in how to strategically factor freelancing into talent requirements and work and organization design. For freelancing to fully embed, marketplaces will have to be consultants and educators, providing independent talent with more than a dash of change management.

Viva la revolution!
