Rivers in Nepal

M oving mass of water which flows from high land to low land is called river. Rivers begin or rise to flow from mountains or lakes. They flow through mountains, rocks and plain lands. They finally fall in to the sea or some other river. There are a large number of rivers in Nepal. Most of them rise from Himalayas or high mountains. However, some come from the mountain tops. Most of the rivers in Nepal start from snow-capped mountains so they flow continuously. These rivers are permanent in flowing water.

A few names of such rivers are: Koshi, Tamor, Gandaki, Karnali, Arun, Trisuli, Rapti,Sunkoshi, Narayani, Seti etc. Koshi is the biggest, Gandaki is the deepest and Karnali is the longest of all these rivers in Nepal. We all are rich in water resource. We can make good income from these rivers. However, only a little part of water resource is in proper usage. It is unfortunate that most of the water flows down uselessly.

Rivers are very useful. They have many advantages. some of their advantages are given as follows. We can irrigate our fields from the water of rivers. People can use the water of rivers as drinking water. We can get fish from rivers. The rivers of Nepal are very effective to produce hydro-electricity. We can row boat and raft along the rivers. Rivers can create some problems also. Flooding is one of the most dangerous problems caused by river.

Nepal is a beautiful country. The presence of different natural resources has made Nepal even more beautiful. Our country's precious resources include green hills, green forests, the snowy Himalayas, and rivers. Nepal is considered to be the second richest country in terms of water resources after Brazil.

Rivers have special importance to Nepal because the geographical division of our country is based on rivers. The west and east borders of Nepal are the rivers Mahakali and Mechi, respectively. Rivers are taken as the basis of the border line to separate zones and districts of Nepal. Ten zones of our country are named after rivers. Nepal is naturally provided with a network of hundreds of rivers. Among the rivers, the Sapta Koshi is the largest. The other big rivers in our country are the Sapta Gandaki, the Karnali, and the Rapti. Some of the rivers like Bagmati, Narayani, Kali Gandaki, etc. are of religious importance. The deepest river in our country is the Narayani.

On the basis of the distribution of rivers, Nepal is divided into three regions. They are the Koshi region, the Gandaki region, and the Karnali region.

Besides, rivers are of great economic importance to our country. Rivers are the source of hydroelectricity. Since we have many large and fast-flowing rivers, we can produce sufficient electricity. According to the studies conducted on the rivers of Nepal, it is calculated that the rivers of Nepal can produce electricity, which can electrify the whole of Asia. But unfortunately, we are not able to produce enough electricity for our own use. Steps should be taken to produce electricity sufficient for our own country. The river is the source of irrigation. If the water from the river is used for irrigation purposes, we can produce more food and become self-sufficient in food supply.

To conclude, plans and policies need to be formulated to utilize our rivers in scientific ways and develop the country in all aspects. If we do so, our country will definitely come under the list of the developed countries in the world.

A massive amount of water flowing from one place to another is a river. Rivers are the greatest natural resources in Nepal. There are many rivers in Nepal. Some of the big rivers of Nepal are Mechi, Koshi, Bagmati, Narayani, Kaligandaki, Seti, Mahakali, Rapti, Seti, and Karnali. Actually they originate from high Himalayas. Rivers are very important for us.

Firstly, water from rivers is used for irrigation, secondly, for generation of hydroelectricity and for domestic purpose. Rivers are important also for scenic beauty. Many tourists love watching the flow of water and rivers are also used for rafting and even for transportation.

In spite of such advantages of rivers, people are polluting water resources by throwing wastage garbage, dead bodies, and waste materials. People have managed their drainage in rivers. Pollution of water in rivers has caused a great disadvantage for people themselves.

Our main challenge is that we are not being able to fully harness the water resources available in our country. So, we should take good advantage of resources available in our country. And for that protection of rivers is very much essential.

About the Karnali River

The Karnali rises from Mt. Kailash on the Tibetan Plateau, and flows 671 miles to its confluence with the Ganges River in India. The river provides water for millions of people, provides for fish and wildlife resources and has a high value for ecotourism especially in the form of whitewater rafting and as an approach corridor to the Sacred Mt. Kailash. These ecological services sustain livelihoods throughout the Karanli River Basin. An ancient river, the Karnali was in place as the Himalayan Mountains were thrust up by the collision of the Eurasian and the Indian tectonic plates. As the mountains rose, the river downcut into the landscape, the sinuous channel already in place. Hard rock ledges, ancient and current day landslides create steep stream gradients, boulder strewn reaches and world-class whitewater rapids. Fed by glacial meltwaters and strong monsoon rains, this powerfully erosive river provides water, nutrients and sediments to the lands along its path providing fertile agricultural plains.

The Karnali, along with three other sacred rivers, the Ganges, the Indus (Sutlej), and the Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo) all initiate from within 100 km (66 miles) of the slopes of Mt. Kailash on the Tibetan Plateau and supply food and water to billions of people in China, Nepal and India.

The Threat of a New Dam and Reservoir

Three hydropower dams are planned for the main stem of the Karnali River, with another 40 proposed on tributary streams throughout the watershed.  Construction of hydropower at this scale will irreversibly affect aquatic species habitats, migrations and ultimately their survival.  The majority of the power provided by these dams will be exported to neighboring nations while Nepal will bear the social and environmental costs.

  Environmental & Social Risks of Hydropower Development

Hydropower development has multiple environmental and social consequences if not based on a strategic planning process.  The risks include:

• Poor quality environmental assessments that often disregard environmental risks especially to native fishery resources
• Dams that prevent migratory fish from reaching spawning grounds and that alter aquatic species habitats
• Road blasting for dams, and road access in general, if not well designed that  exacerbates landslide risk
• Acquisition of high-value agricultural lands that disrupts local livelihoods
• Loss of native flora and fauna that impacts biodiversity and the human communities that depend on it
• False promises to locals of the benefits they will receive from construction and operation of dams that degrades trust and social structures
• Corruption in large infrastructure projects that results in low-quality construction practices

The Potential for Natural Disasters in Nepal is Among the Highest in the World

Earthquakes are a given in Nepal due to its location on the still moving Indian and Eurasian continental plates.  The rising Himalaya and weak geology result in landslides.  Monsoon rains result in significant flooding. Natural disasters have the following effects on dams:

Earthquakes

• Trigger landslides and rockfall
• The Gorkha earthquake of 2015 put 42 mega and small hydropower plants out of operation, one tenth of Nepal’s total energy generating capacity was damaged
• Directly damage dam infrastructure (i.e falling boulders causing cracks)
• Block rivers creating dam-break flood events
• Deliver high sediment loads (some of the highest in the world) to the stream channel rapidly filling reservoirs and degrading
• Damage electrical transmission lines, road, and village infrastructure
• Large storms overpower dam capacity to control flows
• Carry large amounts of sediment into hydropower reservoirs

If there is a country’s flag that stands out among all other countries it is the flag of Nepal . Our flag is very unique and cannot be compared to other countries’ flags due to its shape. It also has a hidden meaning behind it which represents the country’s peace-loving and friendly nature, bravery, and immortal history.

My country Nepal is situated between two countries, India and China. Although it is sandwiched between international powers, conflicts have not happened between any, and peace remains. Nepal is a country of various castes and cultures. In other words, it is like a beautiful garden of flowers with people of different ethnicities and backgrounds.

My country Nepal is not only unique for its flag but also its geographical terrain, the variety of castes and cultures you can find, and the rich history of it. It is the land of various great places and important figures that people know far and wide. The temperature here spans from cool to hot and is a heaven for residing in.

There are about 126 castes in Nepal each with its own rich history and culture which makes Nepal a rich place for culture. Some dating back to the millenniums. Not only that, our country is very rich in its geographical terrain. From the lowest point of just 70 Meters from sea level to the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest (8848.86 meters) , we have temperature scales that vary from place to place. It is divided into three regions, Terai, Hilly, and Himalayas each according to their altitude and geographical differences.

Himalayan regions have high and mighty Himalayas that are breathtaking to look at. Out of the world’s top 10 highest peaks, 8 of them fall in my country. It is already a great pride to have come from such a country. The diverse flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes, lush and green jungles, historical and religious places in Nepal are enough to gather the attention of foreigners and locals too. People from all over the world pay thousands of dollars just to see our country’s snow-capped mountains, rivers, cliffs, waterfalls, other beautiful landscapes, the rich flora and fauna, and sites of great religious and historical importance. It just doesn’t end there.

Our country ranks in the top 5 for the richest in water resources. With just a small country with an area of 1,47,181 sq kilometers, it has the potential to fuel hydropower worth 2% of the entire world. It may look small in number but taking our country’s small area in context, it is a potential incomparable to all. The Terai region holds fertile land and smooth flowing waters that are excellent for farming and cultivating.

Nepal is also known as an agricultural country where 60% of the people here follow agriculture as their work. Our country also has huge historical importance. Gautama Buddha the founder and preacher of Buddhism which is practiced worldwide was also born in Nepal. Buddhism is known to preach peace and non-violence and to love everyone. King Janak is also an important figure who holds great importance to communities in Nepal.

Other personalities include Bhrikuti, Araniko, etc. Our country is also known for its bravery. Our country never has to celebrate Independence day as we were never under the rule of any other. We stood and fought against the Britans and other Mongol countries. Brave Gorkhalis were united after a long struggle and fought their way to preserve their country. The courage and bravery of Nepali people are also know world wide. Many brave Gorkhalis went to fight under countries in world wars and won various colors and medals. This brought our country so much respect that we even enjoy it for granted to date.

Although our country’s history, culture, terrains, and achievements make anyone feel proud, the power struggle for the politicians, previous kings, and presidents have made the country weak and fall in the developing country category. Our rich natural resources have not been utilized and we have fallen way behind. Corruption is widely prevalent in our country and the loans we have taken from other countries are in a large number. The amount of food and other materialistic consumption has made Nepal import more and export less.

Our country is poor but the people here are rich. This is because of the corruption and the illegal working/trading that has been done. The government has not made significant progress and the people aren’t responsible. Although I feel proud to be A Nepali, the condition of my country makes me feel bad. People should feel responsible and carry out their duties and not just complain about the government.

The government too should implement proper policies and rules and enforce them accordingly. Utilization of our natural resources should be done in an effective way and social evils such as discrimination according to castes and genders, other superstitions should be slowly removed. Centralized development should stop and we should control the people moving out to other countries with their skills that are wasted abroad. This way we can slowly develop our country.

Rescuers recover first body from 2 buses swept into river in Nepal by a landslide

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Rescuers in Nepal recovered Saturday the first body after a landslide swept away two buses, pushing them into a raging river a day earlier, authorities said.

The buses, carrying more than 50 people, fell into the Trishuli river which was swollen by continuous rainfall over the past few days as heavy monsoon downpours turned their waters murky brown, making it even more difficult to see the wreckage.

The body was that of a man and was found some 50 kilometers (31 miles) from where the buses fell, said government administrator Khima Nanda Bhusal. He added rescuers found a bank card and were in the process of identifying the man whose body was transported to a nearby hospital.

Rescuers are now expanding their search area toward the southern region from the landslide area where the man’s body was found, Bhusal said.

Weather conditions improved Saturday and search teams were able to cover more ground in the hunt for the missing buses and passengers. Heavy equipment had cleared much of the landslides from the highway, making it easier to reach the area.

Soldiers and police teams were using rubber rafts, divers and sensor equipment to try and locate the buses, which were pushed off the highway into the river by a landslide.

Three people were ejected from the buses and were being treated in a nearby hospital.

Nepal’s rivers generally are fast-flowing due to the mountainous terrain. Heavy monsoon downpours in the past few days have swollen the waterways and turned their waters murky brown, making it even more difficult to see the wreckage.

The buses were on the key highway connecting Nepal’s capital to southern parts of the country when they were swept away Friday morning near Simaltal, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of Kathmandu.

A third bus was hit by another landslide Friday morning a short distance away on the same highway. Authorities said the driver was killed but it was not clear if there were any other casualties.

Monsoon season brings heavy rains to Nepal from June to September, often triggering landslides in the mountainous Himalayan country.

The government has imposed a ban on passenger buses traveling at night in the areas where weather warnings are posted, according to the Home Ministry.
