In fact, a mentor is a source of experience and information from which a mentee can learn from. My life mentor came as part of my academic life, and we have always bonded and focused on something deeper. Education can be one of the difficult activities and it calls for crucial perspective and mentorship. My mentor is associated with academics and his life is one of a kind. In general perspective, the life of my mentor had a lot of impacts in my life. In fact, his life journey is an absolute role model and exemplary example that has become part of my life. The journey of my mentor was driven by a global vision. This is because he has tremendously become successful in life based on his view based on broader objectives and goals. In his day to day activities he was driven by his global vision. Perhaps, my mentor always asserted that a program is one of the absolute means in achieving life goals. My mentor became successful through his focus on leading from the front. The journey of my mentor was full of challenges both financial and social, but he was always willing to share his expertise, skills, and knowledge. The life journey of my mentor was full of demonstrations of positive attitude as well as positive aspects. There were occasions whereby life seemed to be difficult and success seemed unachievable. He could always focus on the importance of remaining positive in a life and he always builds a positive attitude towards life. My mentor has always succeeded in most of his activities, but what is behind his success is the personal interest in mentoring and the urge to make the world a better place for all people. My mentor life was a clear image of what good mentors should look like. He was compassionate, knowledgeable, and possessed good qualities of a trainer and a teacher. It is worth noting that mentoring is more of teaching that the art of changing someone’s life. He could communicate so easily, and this formed the basis of all educative sessions that we carried out. Mentorship entails growth among all the stakeholders. There are occasions whereby my mentor could take some advice from me. Such life is encouraging since he focused on growth and dynamic nature of life. Based in the life of my mentor, values and good network are some of the common characteristics. The essence of having good network with other people drives one towards success. On the society, my mentor is well known for his ability and reputation to help others and make them solve their problems. Setting of good example sets the centre stage of the entire mentoring skills and knowledge. Mentoring incorporates various activities, my mentor was a father of a family, but he always focused at solving the mentee problems rather than involving them in their problems. One of the crucial components of my mentor life journey is the issue of professionalism. He basically had professional skills, which include respect, personal courage, competence, integrity, as well as commitment. These qualities that he possessed during the mentoring process seemed to have been the pillar of his career as a mentor. My mentor is one of the important people in my life for various reasons. It is evident that he has actually impacted my life in various ways. Looking at my entire life, I attribute my success and strengths to him since he saw me through various aspects of life. In life we tend to underestimate the impacts of mentor, and this is why many people fail in life. My mentor is very important because he encouraged me in various occasions. There are many occasions that I feel too low, and in such occasions he encouraged me. In addition, my mentor is important because he helped me reduce the mistakes I make in life. The wisdom that I received from him helped me to prevent the mistakes that could not be avoided easily. I was weak in various issues, but through his mentorship I managed to eliminate my weaknesses. This is one of the difficult aspects of mentoring since it entails a lot of pruning off. Our friends will always tolerate our weakness, but a mentor will ensure that the weakness is eliminated. He is also important because he brought out my strength and ensured that i realize my potentials in life. It is through my mentor that I became truthful and honesty. Success in life is all about saying the truth and being honesty. There are various impacts that my mentor has caused in my life. Some of the impacts are associated to empowerment, support, expectations, boundaries, social competencies, time management, positive identity, as well as positive values. Faced with the many challenges of graduate school, students may find that the important goal of connecting with mentors gets lost in the shuffle of classwork and research. But developing those professional relationships is worth the time.

"Research shows that mentees generally perform better in their programs and after they get out of school" than students without mentors, according to W. Brad Johnson, PhD, a psychology professor at the U.S. Naval Academy and author of several books about mentoring. "Students tend to get tied into the mentor's network of colleagues, and that creates more open doors."

Graduate students with mentors are also likely to be more satisfied with their programs, be more involved in professional organizations, and have a stronger sense of professional identity, Johnson says.

Of course, finding a mentor or mentors isn't always easy. Many graduate programs pair students with an advisor, but advisors typically focus on administrative matters or short-term assignments, not overarching questions about a student's career goals and how to achieve them.

"It is optimal if mentors stand by your side and help you figure out what you want to do with your life," says APA President Nadine J. Kaslow, PhD, an Emory University psychology professor and chief psychologist of Atlanta's Grady Health System. "Getting through grad school and an internship and postdoctoral work is a complex process, and the more support and encouragement we can get along the way, the better off we will be."

About 70 percent of psychology PhD students and 50 percent of PsyD students say they had a mentoring relationship with their advisors, Johnson says about his research. "Very often, mentoring is left to the luck of the draw or chance," he says. "Program leaders assume that graduate students will just gravitate to a faculty member who may become a strong mentor for them, but that isn't always the case."

Learning from peers and professors

It's best for students to find more than one mentor, Johnson advises. "Make a constellation of mentors," he says. "Don't put all of your expectations on one person to meet your needs developmentally. Faculty are incredibly busy and are often overwhelmed with the number of students they are assigned."

Creating that constellation of mentors — faculty members, peer students and outside professionals — takes a multi-pronged approach and a willingness by students to be assertive, says Johnson, who also teaches at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. If an advisor doesn't become a mentor, students can reach out to other faculty members by scheduling meetings, volunteering to work in a research lab, or assisting with grant writing. "Joining faculty in the work they are already doing helps make these relationships collaborative and collegial more quickly," he says.

Todd Avellar, a fifth-year psychology doctoral student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, found a mentor early. While he was still an undergraduate at Santa Barbara, psychology professor Tania Israel, PhD, met with him and discussed his career goals and helped convince him to enroll in graduate school, where she still serves as his mentor. Avellar has traveled to conferences where Israel has introduced him to some of her colleagues. "She really showed me the ropes," he says.

Avellar also has been on the other side of the mentoring relationship by serving as a peer mentor to new graduate students. His program assigns more senior students to help first-year students navigate the unfamiliar waters of graduate school. Peer mentors can offer a behind-the-scenes look at a graduate program and answer questions that students might not feel comfortable asking a faculty member, Avellar says. He often takes new students on campus tours, shows them cheap places to eat, and fills them in on internal politics in his department.

"A peer mentor is just a few steps ahead of you, so they have a good idea of where the potholes and land mines are," he says.

As a former APAGS committee member, Avellar pushed for the association to develop a position statement on the need for high-quality mentorship opportunities at graduate schools. The statement, which was approved by the APAGS committee in July, calls on doctoral training programs to ensure faculty mentoring opportunities for every student.

"Certain areas are traditionally not discussed in the classroom, such as close guidance on networking, navigating the post-graduation working world, acquiring publishing and business-of-practice skills, and other areas necessary for the successful passage of a graduate student to early-career psychologist," the position paper states. "These areas befit the mentoring relationship."

The position statement also encourages the use of programs such as "speed mentoring" events, mentoring groups and paired mentor matches. In speed mentoring, students move among tables and speak briefly with professionals with various expertise to get career advice and potentially develop a more lasting connection. "We need to recognize that mentoring isn't one size fits all," Avellar says. "It really needs to be adapted to each student."

Gina Raciti wasn't sure about her future when she was studying for a master's degree in counseling at Johns Hopkins University. While taking a course taught by Johnson, she started talking with him after class, and he suggested that she pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology. He also helped her focus on research and writing skills to make her a more competitive applicant to doctoral programs.

"I think it was a good confidence boost that he believed I could do it," says Raciti, now a fourth-year doctoral student at George Washington University. "He's the one I've kept in contact with the most, and he's also been an emotional support."

It's really important to have someone supporting you in grad school, Raciti adds. "As grad students, we often doubt ourselves, and there's that imposter syndrome where you feel like you don't belong but you're still here. It helps to have someone who believes in you."

Seeking outside help

Both APAGS and APA offer mentorship opportunities that can extend beyond the university to professionals already working in the field. For example, during her time as a graduate student at the University of Memphis, Ayse Ciftci, PhD, found mentors outside the university through her volunteer work with APA Div. 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology). APA divisions and regional conferences can offer networking opportunities that may lead to mentorships, Ciftci says.

Ciftci now mentors students as an associate professor and training director of the counseling psychology program at Purdue University. She says the benefits of the mentoring relationship go both ways: She is still learning from her mentees, who offer fresh perspectives and curiosity. "It's important to remember it's not a one-way relationship," she says. "Students should have an active role."

APA and APAGS offer some mentorship programs specifically for students who may be underrepresented on campus or have difficulty finding mentors who understand their needs:

  • APA's Disability Issues in Psychology pairs disabled graduate students with mentors with similar disabilities. Both mentors and mentees can apply online at the APA website.
  • APAGS's Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity offers a free yearlong mentoring program (September through August) that matches LGBT students with LGBT professionals. Applications are due by Aug. 15 each year and can be completed online through the APA website.
  • APA Div. 45 (Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity and Race) offers a mentorship program for graduate students from ethnic or racial minorities or for students interested in psychology issues relating to those groups. Applications are accepted in June at the Div. 45 conference and in December through an online application. More than 40 students have been matched with long-term mentors through the program.

Dos and don'ts

Whether a mentorship involves a faculty member or a professional, there are some important issues to consider to avoid potential pitfalls. The APA Centering on Mentoring Task Force created a free guide with advice for mentors and mentees, including issues that can create problems, such as sexual relationships, bullying by mentors who expect unpaid work from mentees, or overdependence by mentees on a mentor's advice.

Other advice for mentors and mentees includes:

  • Be sure to establish appropriate boundaries and expectations at the beginning of the relationship. Mentees shouldn't expect mentors to serve as their therapists, says Eddy Ameen, PhD, assistant director of APAGS. The relationship also should evolve as the mentee advances in his or her education. "You're moving more from being a student in their eyes to being more of a colleague," he says.
  • Since faculty members are often very busy, mentees should take the initiative to schedule meetings to seek advice, Johnson says. "Many of these relationships wither on the vine if there isn't good exchange and contact early in the relationship," he says. "You don't want to be annoying and obnoxious, but you certainly want to bring yourself to that faculty member's attention."
  • Mentors should provide honest feedback without being overly critical, and they shouldn't steer a mentee's career decisions, Kaslow says. "You want to guide people," she says. "You want to give them information and let them make their own choices. You want to encourage them to capitalize on their strengths."
  • Mentees also should be able to reject a mentor's advice without facing retaliation if the advice doesn't mesh with the mentee's own career goals, Johnson says. "Many faculty unconsciously try to shape their mentees in their own image," he says. "For example, they may try to push them into their area of research."
  • The imbalance in power between the mentor and mentee also can lead to problems, such as questions about authorship of studies that involve work by the mentee, Ciftci says.

If a mentoring relationship becomes unhelpful or toxic, then mentees need to consider terminating the relationship or consulting with other students or faculty members, Johnson says.

While problems can occur, most mentoring relationships offer many benefits for both mentors and mentees. "I really love mentoring," Kaslow says. "It's a wonderful way to give back to the community and help new people grow and learn and advance our profession. I also learn so much from my mentees."

Mentorships may continue long after students graduate and advance in their careers, Ciftci says. "A lot of learning happens outside of the classroom, and mentoring is a critical part of it," she says. "I believe mentoring is probably the key factor for success in graduate school."

In business, as in life in general, there are so many times where we can become stuck in place, simply spinning our wheels and making no progress forward. Not only does this stop growth cold, it leads directly to complacency — the enemy of any smart businessperson. One of the easiest and most effective ways to avoid this is with the help of mentors. In fact, I advocate that every person have at least three mentors.

A mentor is simply someone who helps us get unstuck, a non-judgmental person who listens with an open mind to help us steer clear of the mistakes they themselves made (and wish they’d had a mentor to help avoid). A mentor helps us accelerate our growth by showing us a clearer path with fewer distractions and obstacles. Think of it this way: When you climb a mountain, you’re thrilled to get to the top — but then quickly look to the next peak and resolve to reach that summit. A mentor helps you scale those upcoming peaks.

Entrepreneur Jim Rohn put it well: “Don’t take the casual approach to life. Casualness leads to casualties. Seek out the mentors that you need that will lead you to greatness in your field. If you’re not willing to learn from others, who are you willing to learn from?”

I personally have three mentors with whom I talk on a regular basis. I also count as mentors the countless others I have never met but whose wisdom made an impression on me via their books, podcasts or TED talks. Mentors are not only for the fortunate or the rich. Sometimes you may have to invest; often they are free. But when you ask someone to be your mentor, remember that it’s a two-way street of give and take. You must give them value as well.

As a business coach, one of the most common things I see is that many people simply lack the courage to ask for help. We have this odd belief that we should be able to do it all on our own, that asking for help is a sign of weakness. In fact, just the opposite is true. As motivational speaker Les Brown said, “Ask for help not because you’re weak, but because you want to remain strong.” Or, as the psychologist and well-known speaker Anne Wilson Schaef explained, “Asking for help does not mean that we are weak or incompetent. It usually indicates an advanced level of honesty and intelligence.”

So, how do you go about getting some mentors? Look to those you admire, who you trust and just pick up the phone and ask. Say, “I am looking for a mentor. Can I call you once a week or twice a month for five or 10 minutes to get advice? And what can I do for you in return?”

How many times have you found yourself practically babbling as you think out loud about a problem, only to discover that by the end of your monologue, you’ve already started to see a solution? That’s what talking with a mentor is like. With their neutral mindset, they give us new lenses and new perspectives. They help keep us on the right path at the right speed — not so hyped up that we’re careening a thousand miles an hour, nor so slow that we sit and do nothing.

Graduating college today looks much different than in times past. As we continue to grapple with Covid-19, new grads are entering the worst job market in more than a decade . A mentor will help you accelerate your job search and make fewer mistakes along the way. Pick those who are successful in your chosen field and let them help by offering advice, encouragement and, hopefully, introductions.

We insure everything from our health to our car to our house. Think of a mentor as people insurance — someone we can reach out to in real-time in the moment we need them. Someone to ask, “I am at a fork in the road and need some advice. Can you give me a minute?” A good mentor gives you the courage and confidence to do things maybe you wouldn’t do on your own. Many times, it just takes a word or a sentence to get you grounded, validated and back on the right path. Sometimes it’s so subtle you can’t even put your finger on it.

That may sound vague, but the benefits of mentorship are, in fact, thoroughly documented. The firm SAP HR Research examined 43 studies published over the last 30 years and found a positive correlation with the career outcomes of mentored vs. non-mentored employees. Those with mentors received higher compensation, a greater number of promotions, felt more satisfied and committed to their career and were more likely to believe they would advance. Furthermore, 76% of people view mentors as important to their overall success.

Remember, the level of consciousness that got you where you are today is not the level that will get you where you want to be. Think big — with mentors!

A mentor and mentee’s reflection on mentoring

Since I started pharmacy school, I have a better appreciation for the importance of mentorship. I am very thankful for the individuals who have shared some of their time to help guide me through this new journey. The profession of pharmacy presents a wide range of opportunities so I always appreciate having others’ advices on how to best achieve my goals.

Some things can only be learned through experience. For that reason, having mentors can be extremely valuable, especially at the beginning of a career. During my internship at ASHP this past summer, I had the opportunity to meet Jaclyn Boyle. Jaclyn’s passion for our profession is truly inspiring. She has already accomplished a lot to help advance patient care and continues to go above and beyond to expand the role of pharmacists. Ever since I met Jaclyn, I knew I had a lot to learn from her. I highly value our mentoring relationship because not only do we share the same passion for our profession but we share a desire to always surpass our limits and help each other maximize our potential.

Mentorship can be life changing. Without mentors, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I find it very helpful to have people to look up to; individuals who you not only share goals with but who can also help guide some of your decisions. I chose to pursue a profession that is constantly evolving and I want to ensure that I can keep up and continue to learn throughout my entire career. I want to contribute to our profession to the best of my ability and having a mentor like Jaclyn can definitely help me meet this goal.  

Here is Jaclyn’s perspective on mentorship:

As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?” Mentoring is a way to contribute to others by dedicating yourself to your mentee’s well-being. To me, mentoring is about building a synergistic relationship based on common interests and goals. When I met my mentee during our shared experience at ASHP, we instantly developed a relationship based on shared passion for the profession of pharmacy and desire to learn more about ourselves.  The nice thing about having an ambitious mentee is that they consciously or unconsciously push you to do more. For example, knowing that my mentee is depending on me for guidance and/or professional development, I am constantly thinking of ways that I can contribute to her success by seeking out new opportunities for her and for us.

No two mentor-mentee experiences are the same.  I like to think of our relationship as a journey to a better place; somewhere neither of us would have gone to alone.  As a mentee myself, I have observed key things that my mentors have done for me in order to be able to pass those qualities to my mentees. By investing in my mentees, I hope to contribute to the profession through others; something I could not accomplish with merely my own contributions. 

Besides all of the benefits that the mentor and mentee gain from this experience, I feel that the continuity and advancement of the profession is derived from such relationships. The discovery of oneself through another helps us on the journey to having a successful career. In the midst of challenges, one can rely on a mentor for words of reassurance or advice that you may not want to hear. It is during those times when the mentoring relationship is tested and can become stronger. Mentoring provides benefits that extend far beyond the formal, outward expression of calling someone your “mentor” or “mentee”; personally, it is nice to know that I was able to help someone, even if it is in a small way.
