Doctor of Philosophy in Education
Our phd in education aims to produce educational researchers who are rigorously trained in high-quality, high-impact research work that can help shape education policy, as well as design interventions to improve educational practice in the country., graduate programs, graduate admissions, about the program.
With its research emphasis, this doctoral program in education is designed to equip students with the competences essential to conducting cutting-edge interdisciplinary research intended to inform and impact education practice and policy. Students are offered both scholarly supervision and personal mentoring in the entirety of the program so that not only are they equipped with an in-depth understanding of current educational trends and issues, but they are also provided with the expertise needed in an array of quantitative and qualitative methods they will need to do solid high-impact research.
This PhD research track only has 24 units of coursework to enable students to focus on their doctoral thesis, expected at the end of the program to provide an opportunity not only to showcase their mastery, but more importantly to make a substantial contribution to the field of education in general and Philippine education in particular.
Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of the program, the student is expected to be able to demonstrate the following competences:
- Demonstrates an in-depth and systematic understanding of the major and complex issues and debates at the frontier of the field of education and at its interfaces with other disciplines
- Leads the conduct of scholarly, original, and complex research that demonstrates advanced competence in addressing critical educational issues and problems, including the capability to synthesize–and build on–the most current educational theories, principles, and practices
- Exhibits scholarly and professional integrity, autonomy, and authority as manifested in one’s commitment to develop novel theories and practices at the frontiers of the discipline

Admission Requirements
Applicants should have a Master of Arts degree in Education and are required to submit the following:
- Clear research thrust
- List of Research Publications (abstract)
- Accomplished Application Form
- Official Transcript of Records (for both undergraduate and master’s degrees)
- Referral letters from at least three (3) former professors
- two (2) recent ID photos
Aside from the above, international applicants are required to submit any of the following:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): overall score of at least 80 for Internet-based test (IBT) and 550 for Paper-based test (PBT). *
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS): at least a band of 6.5 *
- Cambridge Assessment English: at least an overall score of 176 *
* Test scores cannot be older than two years.
Applicants should pass the graduate school entrance examination which is administered by the Bulatao Center.

- After reading all that has been said here I am still confused and as such, honestly think there should be a global conference( like the Bologna Process) on the renaming of academic degrees, particularly Doctorates. The academia world must then call 'a spade a spade' on all five continents. My reasoning is: PhDs should only be awarded to the Arts,Humanities and Social Sciences. ScD/D.Sc./Sc.D(Doctor of Science) to Physical sciences and the Engineering fields. Until this happens there would be confusion- which to my mind is ironic! – user56214 Commented Jun 6, 2016 at 8:05

It depends on the university and the country.
In England, a PhD is typically awarded for a thesis and oral examination of the thesis, usually followed by implementation of corrections to the thesis, the requirements for which are specified during or just after the oral exam. It's often done soon after a Masters, which is done soon after a Bachelors, so a fairly large proportion of PhDs are awarded at the start of one's academic career. Whereas a DSc is awarded for a portfolio of work, (in some cases submitted together with an over-arching critique of that portfolio), and thus is more likely to be awarded later in an academic's career.
Nominally, a PhD is a doctorate in philosophy, but is typically awarded for pretty much any subject. There are some who argue that philosophy of knowledge always form part of these studies, regardless of the subject. I occasionally use this line to try to inspire students, myself. A DSc is a doctorate in science, and is not awarded for literature, law, divinity, or music, each of which has its own dedicated higher doctorate.
The DSc is a higher doctorate than a PhD, in England. In some other countries, they're equivalent.
Both get the honorific title doctor.

In essence, different countries have different views due to their historical development, which generally fall into two clusters:
- Doctor of Science is equivalent to Ph.D.
- Doctor of Science is a sort of super-Ph.D.
In general, much of the world seems to be slowly standardizing around Ph.D. as a universal term, though given national pride and the traditions of academia, it might never congeal completely around a single interpretation of the terms.
In the United States, the Doctor of Science is identical to the Doctor of Philosophy except that it's awarded only in the natural sciences, and only by a few universities. Massachusetts Institute of Technology awards both degrees, for instance, and the curriculum is identical. (MIT doctoral graduates in the physical sciences and engineering can choose either degree title once all the requirements have been met. Those in the social sciences and biology don't have the option of choosing the Doctor of Science, however; they all get the PhD.)
In the United Kingdom and some other countries, the Doctor of Science is a "higher doctorate" awarded after submission of a portfolio of published work -- typically around 80-120 journal articles. It signifies a much higher level of accomplishment than the PhD, and it's usually awarded to researchers relatively late in their careers. There are equivalent higher doctorates in other fields of study: Doctor of Letters, Doctor of Laws, Doctor of Divinity, etc.
- Thank you! As I recall from my time studying for my Scientiæ Baccalaureus degree at MIT 1980-84, MIT only offered an ScD. I wonder if they later "threw in" the PhD so graduates could choose, thus avoiding having to explain the difference to the less sophisticated, or am I simply mis-remembering? I found this current official explanation helpful: "The PhD and ScD degrees are awarded interchangeably by all departments in the School of Engineering and the School of Science except in the fields of biology, cognitive science, neuroscience, medical engineering, and medical physics." The Doctor of Science Degree is purely a research degree that extends well beyond what is formally required for a Doctor of Philosophy Degree. Extensive publication of research is a prime prerequisite for the D.Sc. Degree, not merely the completion of a dissertation. A dissertation plus an extensive port folio of research publications add-up to qualify a candidate for the Doctor of Science Degree. Usually the D.Sc. Degree is inter-disciplinary, such as a combination of research in history, economics, and political science or government, which gears the candidate for inter-disciplinary publication.

Students must complete a minimum of thirty-three (33) units of course work for the program, of which fifteen (15) units are core courses, nine (9) units are area courses, and nine (9) units are elective courses:

The Ph.D. Program is designed to provide an in depth knowledge and technical skills in their major fields of specialization. Moreover, the program shall improve their managerial and entrepreneurial competence.
The student must be able to conduct an independent scholarly research work and is able to draw or infer conclusions that may modify or enlarge upon what has been previously known. The candidate must present a dissertation embodying the results of his research.
The Doctoral Program in Plant Science provides two major areas of specialization. Agronomy and Horticulture, with Crop Production and Management as area of concentration. Minor work is also provided for students taking major work in other departments. The MS and Ph.D. degrees,are established on individual basis by the Advisory Committee/Guidance Committee constituted to guide the work of the student.
Aside from qualifying examination as a requirement for regular admission to the Ph.D. Degree, the program also requires a comprehensive examination, and in oral defense of the student’s dissertation.

Program Description
The Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy Program is a doctoral degree program under the academic track. It aims to provide students who already have a master’s degree in philosophy or in any other related field with excellent opportunities to further expand and deepen their grasp of the crucial issues in philosophy with a view to developing a specialized focus, either in the context of tradition or in relation to recent trends in world philosophy. Eclectic and creative, the program provides a diverse curriculum of course offerings covering a wide range of philosophic concerns as seen from the perspectives of the various philosophical traditions. From Analytic Philosophy to Continental Philosophy, from Asian and Comparative Philosophy to the newly emerging Filipino philosophy, the program ensures that differing philosophical inclinations are given equal treatment.

Cognate Courses
- Students may enroll in a 3-unit graduate course offered as a cognate course by any other department in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). Such course will be credited as an elective course.
- All graduate courses offered by the Department of Philosophy, being foundational and having no prerequisite courses, may be taken as cognate courses by graduate students of other CLA departments.
Foreign Language Requirement Any one foreign language (except English) that is suitable for the topic of one’s dissertation. The credit units for the courses taken should amount to 6 (or its equivalent of 84 hrs. of instruction) and should be completed with passing grades.
Course Repetition and Completion
A grade below 2.5 for courses taken under the doctoral programs would require repetition of such courses. A grade of “Incomplete” or “Deferred” incurred in a term automatically becomes a “W” (Withdrawn) if not completed within the succeeding term, and its highest possible completion grade is 3.5.
Financial Aid Full and partial scholarships are available through the Office of Admissions and Scholarships (OAS).
Admission Requirements 1. The applicant must have a master’s degree in philosophy or in any other course. If the latter, the applicant, in his/her first term of enrollment, will be required to enroll in one or two refresher courses to be determined by the Graduate Program Coordinator or the Chair of the Department of Philosophy. 2. A letter of application and two letters of recommendation from former professors or present employers. 3. Passing a qualifying examination. 4. An interview with the Graduate Program Coordinator or the Chair of the Department of Philosophy.

(4) Publicly Defended Dissertation (12 units)
- Public oral defense of dissertation has two stages: proposal and final.
(5) 1 Publication in a Refereed and Indexed/Abstracted Journal or Juried Creative Work
- Publications may have single or multiple authors; and journals may be published nationally or internationally. Additional supporting documents may be required.
APPENDIX: DESCRIPTIONS OF THE ACADEMIC COURSES
A. BASIC COURSES Philosophical Research 3 units This is a research course where the student is trained to use proper documentation, that is the proper use of parenthetical references (PR) and reference lists (RL). The parts of a paper or book or thesis are discussed. Students are trained how to use the library, how to write a book review, and related matters. In particular, they are trained to write an Introduction, a Theoretical or Conceptual Framework, and a Review of Related Literature.
Philosophy of Mind 3 units A study of modern and contemporary trends in the philosophy of mind among European and Anglo-American thinkers.
Phenomenology and Existentialism 3 units A thorough study of the views of Brentano and Husserl on the project of phenomenology and how existentialist philosophers such as Sartre, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty react to such views.
Philosophy of Language 3 units A critical study of the nature of language, meaning and communication, including the theories of Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, Chomsky, Austin, Searle, and others. Open to students of Linguistics and Languages.
Postmodernism 3 units An examination of a contemporary movement called postmodernism in terms of its philosophical and cultural roots, claims, scope and influences, and critical reactions to certain dominant ways of thinking that have characterized modernist thought, such as those described by Derrida as “logocentric,” as expressed in various areas that include literature, art, architecture, film, and philosophy.
Philosophy of Science 3 units A critical study of the philosophical problems related to science, including what the laws of nature are, causality, explanation, theories, models, the ontological status of theoretical entities, induction, probabilities, value judgment in science, and others.
Eastern Philosophy 3 units A thorough and holistic approach to philosophies traditionally classified as Eastern which include Buddhist Philosophy, Indian Philosophy, Chinese Philosophy, and Islamic philosophy.
Filipino Philosophy 3 units An in-depth review and analysis of available philosophical writings by Filipinos: cultural, traditional, and constitutional/national approaches to Filipino philosophy.
Philosophical Problems 3 units The course aims to introduce students to the philosophical endeavor through examining some of the significant and key issues in philosophy such as the problem of evil, the problem of value and the problem of free will, and other problems that matter. As philosophers, we try to find out whether our views on the above can be supported with rational arguments, or whether we have to give them up in light of closer scrutiny.
B. MAJOR COURSES Analytic Philosophy 3 units A critical study of the works of analytic philosophers from Bertrand Russell and G. E. Moore to the present.
Continental Philosophy 3 units An introductory course on continental philosophy with emphasis on the philosophers of existentialism, phenomenology, hermeneutics, and postmodernism.
Hermeneutics 3 units An in-depth study of hermeneutics as culled from the writings of Dilthey, Gadamer, Ricoueur, Derrida et al.
Advanced Symbolic Logic 3 units A survey of recent trends approaches in the study of modern (symbolic/mathematical) logic or of modern methods and principles used in distinguishing good (correct) from bad (incorrect) reasoning.
Ethics 3 units
An in-depth study of the classical and contemporary theories in moral philosophy covering both normative ethics and meta-ethics.
Feminist Philosophy 3 units A critical examination of feminist perspectives on traditional philosophical methods or ways of doing philosophy in the areas of ethics, social philosophy, philosophy of science, and epistemology, among others, as advanced by the movement’s leading figures which include de Beauvoir, Kristeva, Gilligan, Smith, Collins, and Harding.
Advanced Metaphysics 3 units A rigorous and formal analysis of the basic assumptions of classical metaphysical systems and their expressions in the history of philosophy, as well as their consequences for modern science and philosophy.
Advanced Epistemology 3 units A critical in-depth discussion of the most significant theories of knowledge, including both the continental, pragmatic, and analytic traditions.
Social and Political Philosophy 3 units An analytical study of the various theories on social justice as advanced by the Social Contractarians (Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau), Marx, Rawls, Nozick, Dworkin, and others.
Philosophy of Education 3 units A critical survey of the philosophies of various education thinkers from the Sophists to the present day but with emphasis on contemporary thinkers.
Advanced Aesthetics/Philosophy of Art 3 units A critical examination of classical and contemporary theories that seek to explain the nature of beauty and art.

Introduction to Philosophy 3 units A panoramic holistic survey of the divisions of philosophy with emphasis on the basic concepts and ideas of philosophy. The latest edition (15th ed.) of the Encyclopedia Britannica listed seventeen (17) divisions of philosophy. This Introduction may include Filipino Philosophy and other Asian philosophies. This course is summarize courses in philosophy.
Process Philosophy 3 units A study of the philosophies of Heraclitus, Whitehead, Hick, and Hartshorne, among others
Critical Theory 3 units An in-depth study of the presuppositions and development of the fundamental views and claims of the philosophical movement called critical theory as put forward and argued for by its key figures (Habermas, Marcuse, Horkheimer, Adorno, et al.)
Marxist Humanism 3 units An in-depth study of Marx’s theory of alienation as expounded in his work Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts and as analyzed and developed by other thinkers like Lukacs, Fromm, Marcuse, and Sartre, among others.
Asian/ Eastern Philosophy 3 units An in-depth study of the major works of Confucius, Lao Tzu, Buddha, Hindu philosophers, and others.
Comparative East-West Philosophy 3 units A comparative and dialogical analysis of Eastern and Western philosophical currents.

A critical and reflective examination of the various philosophical views concerning the existence and nature of the unconscious, as well as the philosophical issues that it gives rise to.
Philosophy of Technology 3 units A critical examination of the philosophical views concerning the nature of technology and its effects on society from the classic contrast in the views of Dewey and Heidegger to the contemporary approaches of Baudrillard, Borgmann, Feenberg, and Haraway, among others
Structuralism/Post Structuralism 3 units A study of the philosophy of methods of structuralism and poststructuralism. This will explore the ideas of Claude Levi-Strauss, Noam Chomsky, Jacques Lacan, Roland Barthes, Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, and others.
Buddhist Philosophy 3 units A thorough study of the origin, basic teachings, and various branches of Buddhism
Chinese Philosophy 3 units An in-depth study of the philosophies of Confucius, Mencius, Lao Tzu, Han Fei Tzu, Mo Tzu et al.

D. BRIDGING COURSE Introduction to Philosophy for Non-philosophy Majors This course is a remedial course for non-philosophy majors who are taking up graduate studies in philosophy. It should provide a background of the study of philosophy and equip students with basic knowledge in undertaking its study. This course will introduce students to some of the main areas of research in contemporary philosophy such as epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, moral philosophy and others. Topics included: understanding what philosophy is, its characteristics, aims and methods, and how it differs from other subjects. This course is an introductory overview of several different areas of philosophy.

Jessica Cooperman joins the Department of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages as an associate professor, the Doris and Simon Konover Chair of Judaic Studies and Director of the Center for Judaic Studies and Contemporary Jewish Life. She previously served as the Director of Jewish Studies and Chair of Religion Studies at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. She is the author of Making Judaism Safe for America: World War I and the Origins of Religious Pluralism, which received an honorable mention for the Saul Viener Book Prize in American Jewish History. Cooperman is also co-editor of the journal American Jewish History. Her current research project is history of Passover in the United States.
Angela Eikenberry joins the School of Public Policy as a professor and director. Eikenberry’s research focuses on the social, economic, and political roles of philanthropy and nonprofit organizations in democratic governance. She received the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s John Grenzebach Research Award for Outstanding Research in Philanthropy and a Fulbright Scholar Award to conduct research in the UK. Eikenberry previously served as the president of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) and was a fellow in the National Academy of Public Administration.
Na-Rae Kim joins the Department of English and Department of Social and Critical Inquiry as an assistant professor. Kim’s research and teaching focuses on 21st Century Asian American fiction, transnational Korean literature, representations of North Korea, and Critical Asian studies. Her book project, titled Re-Turning Korea: Navigating Homelands in Korean American Literature, explores 21 st century Korean American literary imaginations of South Korea, North Korea, and Korean America.
Hanlin Zhou joins the Department of Geography, Sustainability, Community, and Urban Studies as a tenure-track assistant professor. He earned his doctoral degree in geography from the University of Toronto. His academic interests lie at the dynamic intersection of artificial intelligence with geospatial data and technology, focusing on understanding human activities such as mobility, health behaviors, crime prevention, as well as natural and human-induced environmental risk.
Ying Zhou joins the Department of Statistics as an assistant professor. Zhou received a B.S. in mathematics and a B.A. in economics from Wuhan University, a master’s degree in mathematics of finance from Columbia University, and a doctoral degree in statistics from the University of Toronto. She was a postdoctoral researcher in the Center for Causal Inference at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research interests include causal inference, semiparametric theory, and interdisciplinary data science.
