How Trump could replace JD Vance if the Ohioan's terrible polling continues

  • There's growing speculation that Donald Trump may have some remorse over picking Sen. JD Vance.

Sen. JD Vance of Ohio has had a rough week and a half since he was announced as former President Donald Trump's vice-presidential candidate . While Trump insists he's sticking with Vance, the senator's poor polling combined with Vice President Kamala Harris' momentum has led some to ask: Could Trump replace Vance? And if so, how would it work? For those wondering, the answers lie in recent history and the fine print of Republican Party rules.

It's still technically possible that Trump could choose a new No. 2. But such a decision would have to happen very soon.

The Democratic and Republican National Committees have separate rules governing how they fill vacancies of presidential or vice-presidential nominees. Under Rule 9, the Republican National Committee explains how it fills a vice-presidential vacancy "which may occur as the result of death, declination, or otherwise."

The rule allows the party to reconvene its national convention if it chooses or to move ahead with a vote of the smaller group of Republican National Committee members who would determine Vance's replacement.

It would be a race against the clock

Time arguably poses more complications than the specific rules, says Amy Dacey, a former CEO of the Democratic National Committee who's now the executive director of the Sine Institute of Policy & Politics at American University.

"I think sometimes what people forget is that people start voting in September," Dacey told Business Insider. "There's an early vote in some states in September. So this is not just a November election. And the worst-case scenario would be for your nominees not to appear on a ballot in a state."

Crucially, the rule explicitly applies to a scenario in which Vance voluntarily steps aside, says Kenneth Mayer, a recently retired political-science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He told BI there was no precedent for forcibly ripping the nomination away from a vice-presidential candidate after the convention.

Mayer also said impending state deadlines posed a significant issue, and the complications would only snowball once ballots were printed. It would be, he said, "extraordinarily disruptive" both logistically and politically to replace Vance as the vice-presidential nominee.

Vance has had a rocky start to joining the ticket

Among Vance's biggest problems are his numbers — a CNN polling analysis found he was the least-liked vice-presidential candidate on the heels of their convention since 1980.

In a survey that Punchbowl News conducted at the Republican National Convention, almost 80% of staffers and leaders said they disapproved of the Vance pick. Most of those asked said Trump should have gone with Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia instead.

Though Trump has consistently stated his support for Vance, reports say some in his orbit are questioning whether the Ohioan was a wise pick now that Harris will almost certainly be the Democratic presidential nominee.

Trump has faced similar situation before. In 2020, there were rumors he would replace former Vice President Mike Pence on his ticket. Trump denied those reports. "If I did, that would be a great act of disloyalty because he's been great," he said.

A representative for Vance declined to comment on the record, and Trump's team didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Trump reaffirmed his support for Vance on Thursday, telling Fox News that Vance was "doing a great job."

"He is fantastic. No, it wouldn't have mattered," Trump said when asked whether knowing about Harris' candidacy would have changed his strategy.

There's been only one modern example of such an extraordinary move occurring

Left unsaid is that if a president or presidential hopeful were to replace their running mate, it would become an immediate scandal, one that risks overshadowing an entire election. Democrats did as much in 1972 when George McGovern dropped his vice-presidential nominee, Sen. Thomas Eagleton of Missouri, after only 18 days together on the ticket.

Eagleton resigned under pressure after the public found out he'd been treated for depression. The debacle is in part responsible for the extensive vetting process that modern vice-presidential picks endure, as McGovern selected Eagleton at the last minute and with little scrutiny.

Politics and journalism have undergone seismic shifts in the half-century since the Eagleton episode, but a similar level of chaos and speculation would probably arise should Trump make a similar choice.

"Rule Nine and the RNC rules don't cover what the practicality of this would be and how it would affect the Trump campaign," Mayer said. "It would be hugely damaging. It's just hard to recover from something like that."

FACT FOCUS: A look at false claims around Kamala Harris and her campaign for the White House

Democrats are quickly rallying around Vice President Kamala Harris as their likely presidential nominee after President Joe Biden’s ground-shaking decision to bow out of the 2024 race.

The announcement that Vice President Kamala Harris will seek the Democratic nomination for president is inspiring a wave of false claims about her eligibility and her background. Some first emerged years ago, while others only surfaced after President Joe Biden’s decision to end his bid for a second term.

Here’s a look at the facts.

CLAIM: Harris is not an American citizen and therefore cannot serve as commander in chief.

THE FACTS: Completely false . Harris is a natural born U.S. citizen. She was born on Oct. 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, according to a copy of her birth certificate, obtained by The Associated Press.

Her mother, a cancer researcher from India, and her father, an economist from Jamaica, met as graduate students at the University of California, Berkeley.

Under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, anyone born on U.S. soil is considered a natural born U.S. citizen and eligible to serve as either the vice president or president.

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside,” reads the amendment.

There is no question or legitimate debate about whether a citizen like Harris is eligible to serve as president or vice president, said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School.

“So many legal questions are really nuanced — this isn’t one of those situations,” Levinson told the AP on Monday.

Still, social media posts making the debunked assertion that Harris cannot serve as president went viral soon after Biden announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the race and would back Harris for president.

“Kamala Harris is not eligible to run for President,” read one post on X that was liked more than 34,000 times. “Neither of her parents were natural born American citizens when she was born.”

False assertions about Harris’ eligibility began circulating in 2019 when she launched her bid for the presidency. They got a boost, thanks in part to then-President Donald Trump, when Biden selected her as his running mate.

“I heard today that she doesn’t meet the requirements,” the Republican said of Harris in 2019.

CLAIM: Harris is not Black.

THE FACTS: This is false. Harris is Black and Indian . Her father, Donald Harris, is a Black man who was born in Jamaica. Shyamala Gopalan, her mother, was born in southern India. Harris has spoken publicly for many years, including in her 2019 autobiography , about how she identifies with the heritage of both her parents.

Despite ample evidence to the contrary, social media users are making erroneous claims about Harris’ race.

“Just a reminder that Kamala Harris @KamalaHarris isn’t black,” reads one X post that had received approximately 42,000 likes and 20,400 shares as of Monday. “She Indian American. She pretends to be black as part of the delusional, Democrat DEI quota.”

But Harris is both Black and Indian. Indeed, she is the first woman, Black person and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president. This fact is highlighted in her biography on WhiteHouse.gov and she has spoken about her ethnicity on many occasions.

Harris wrote in her autobiography, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” that she identifies with the heritage of both her mother and father.

“My mother, grandparents, aunts, and uncle instilled us with pride in our South Asian roots,” she wrote. “Our classical Indian names harked back to our heritage, and we were raised with a strong awareness and appreciation for Indian culture.”

In the next paragraph, she adds, “My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters.” Harris again refers to herself as a “black woman” in the book’s next chapter.

CLAIM: Harris got her start by having an affair with a married man, California politician Willie Brown.

THE FACTS: This is missing some important context. Brown was separated from his wife during the relationship, which was not a secret.

Brown, 90, is a former mayor of San Francisco who was serving as speaker of the California State Assembly in the 1990s when he and Harris were in a relationship. Brown had separated from his wife in 1982.

“Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago,” Brown wrote in 2020 in the San Francisco Chronicle under the article title, “Sure, I dated Kamala Harris. So what?”

He wrote that he supported Harris’ first race to be San Francisco district attorney — just as he has supported a long list of other California politicians, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Harris, 59, was state attorney general from 2011-2017 and served in the Senate from 2017 until 2021, when she became vice president. She has been married to Doug Emhoff since 2014.

Harris’ critics have used the past relationship to question her qualifications, as Fox News personality Tomi Lahren did when she wrote on social media in 2019: “Kamala did you fight for ideals or did you sleep your way to the top with Willie Brown.” Lahren later apologized for the comment.

Trump and some of his supporters have also highlighted the nearly three-decade old relationship in recent attacks on Harris .

CLAIM: An Inside Edition clip of television host Montel Williams holding hands with Harris and another woman is proof that Harris was his “side piece.”

THE FACTS: The clip shows Montel with Harris and his daughter, Ashley Williams. Harris and Williams, a former marine who hosted “The Montel Williams Show” for more than a decade, dated briefly in the early 2000s.

In the clip, taken from a 2019 Inside Edition segment , Williams can be seen posing for photographs and holding hands with both women as they arrive at the 2001 Eighth Annual Race to Erase MS in Los Angeles.

But social media users are misrepresenting the clip, using it as alleged evidence that Harris was Montel’s “side piece” — a term used to describe a person, typically a woman, who has a sexual relationship with a man in a monogamous relationship.

Williams addressed the false claims in an X post on Monday, writing in reference to the Inside Edition clip, “as most of you know, that is my daughter to my right.” Getty Images photos from the Los Angeles gala identify the women as Harris and Ashley Williams.

In 2019, Williams described his relationship with Harris in a post on X, then known as Twitter.

“@KamalaHarris and I briefly dated about 20 years ago when we were both single,” he wrote in an X post at the time. “So what? I have great respect for Sen. Harris. I have to wonder if the same stories about her dating history would have been written if she were a male candidate?”

CLAIM: Harris promised to inflict the “vengeance of a nation” on Trump supporters.

THE FACTS: A fabricated quote attributed to Harris is spreading online five years after it first surfaced.

In the quote, Harris supposedly promises that if Trump is defeated in 2020, Trump supporters will be targeted by the federal government: “Once Trump’s gone and we have regained our rightful place in the White House, look out if you supported him and endorsed his actions, because we’ll be coming for you next. You will feel the vengeance of a nation.”

The quote was shared again on social media this week. One post on X containing an image of the quote was shared more than 22,000 times as of Monday afternoon.

The remarks didn’t come from Harris , but from a satirical article published online in August 2019. Shortly after, Trump supporters like musician Ted Nugent reposted the comments without noting they were fake.

CLAIM: A video shows Harris saying in a speech: “Today is today. And yesterday was today yesterday. Tomorrow will be today tomorrow. So live today, so the future today will be as the past today as it is tomorrow.”

THE FACTS: Harris never said this. Footage from a 2023 rally on reproductive rights at Howard University, her alma mater, was altered to make it seem as though she did.

In the days after Harris headlined the Washington rally, Republicans mocked a real clip of her speech, with one critic dubbing her remarks a “word salad,” the AP reported at the time .

Harris says in the clip: “So I think it’s very important — as you have heard from so many incredible leaders — for us, at every moment in time, and certainly this one, to see the moment in time in which we exist and are present, and to be able to contextualize it, to understand where we exist in the history and in the moment as it relates not only to the past, but the future.”

NARAL Pro-Choice America, an abortion rights nonprofit whose president also spoke at the rally, livestreamed the original footage. It shows Harris making the “moment in time” remark, but not the “today is today” comment.

The White House’s transcript of Harris’ remarks also does not include the statement from the altered video. Harris’ appearance at the event came the same day that Biden announced their reelection bid .

KB5042429: New recovery tool to help with CrowdStrike issue impacting Windows devices

As a follow-up to the CrowdStrike Falcon agent issue impacting Windows clients and servers, we have released an updated recovery tool with two repair options to help IT administrators expedite the repair process. The tool automates the manual steps in  KB5042421 (client) and KB5042426 (server) . Download the signed Microsoft Recovery Tool from the Microsoft Download Center . You can use the tool to recover Windows clients, servers, and Hyper-V virtual machines (VM).

There are two repair options:

Recover from Windows PE : this option uses boot media that automates the device repair.

Recover from safe mode : this option uses boot media for affected devices to boot into safe mode. An administrator can then sign in using an account with local administrative privileges and run the remediation steps.

Determine which option to use

This option to recover from Windows PE quickly and directly recovers systems and doesn't require local administrative privileges. If the device uses BitLocker, you may need to manually enter the BitLocker recovery key before you can repair an affected system.

If you use a non-Microsoft disk encryption solution, refer to guidance from that vendor. They should provide options to recover the drive so that you can run the remediation script from Windows PE.

This option to recover from safe mode may enable recovery on BitLocker-enabled devices without requiring the entry of BitLocker recovery keys. You need access to an account with local administrator rights on the device.

Use this option for devices in the following situations:

It uses TPM-only protectors.

The disk isn't encrypted.

The BitLocker recovery key is unknown.

If the device uses TPM+PIN BitLocker protectors, the user will either need to enter the PIN or you need to use the BitLocker recovery key.

If BitLocker isn't enabled, then the user only needs to sign in with an account with local administrator rights.

If you use a non-Microsoft disk encryption solution, refer to guidance from that vendor. They should provide options to recover the drive so that you can run the remediation script from safe mode.

Additional considerations

Although the USB option is preferred, some devices may not support USB connections. For these situations, see the section on how to Use Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) for recovery .

If the device can't connect to a PXE network, and USB isn't an option, try the manual steps in the following articles:

Otherwise, reimaging the device might be a solution.

With any recovery option, first test it on multiple devices before you use it broadly in your environment.

Create the boot media

Prerequisites to create the boot media.

A Windows 64-bit client with at least 8 GB of free space on which you can run the tool to create the bootable USB drive.

Administrative privileges on the Windows client from prerequisite #1.

A USB drive with a minimum size of 1 GB and no larger than 32 GB. The tool deletes all existing data on this drive and automatically formats it to FAT32.

Instructions to create the boot media

To create recovery media, from the 64-bit Windows client in prerequisite #1, use the following steps:

Download the signed Microsoft Recovery Tool from the Microsoft Download Center.

Extract the PowerShell script from the downloaded file.

Open Windows PowerShell as an administrator and run the following script: MsftRecoveryToolForCS.ps1

The tool downloads and installs the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) . This process might take several minutes to complete.

Choose one of the two options for recovering affected devices: Windows PE or safe mode .

Optionally select a directory that contains driver files to import into the recovery image. We recommend you select N  to skip this step. ​​​​​​​

The tool imports any SYS and INI files recursively under the specified directory.

Certain devices, such as Surface devices, might need additional drivers for keyboard input.

Select the option to either generate an ISO file or USB drive .

If you choose the USB option:

Insert the USB drive when prompted and provide the drive letter.

Once the tool completes creating the USB drive, remove it from the Windows client.

Instructions to use the recovery option

If you created media in the previous steps for Windows PE, use these instructions on affected devices.

Prerequisites to use the boot media for Windows PE recovery

You may need the BitLocker recovery key for each BitLocker-enabled and affected device.

If the affected device uses TPM+PIN protectors, and you don't know the PIN for the device, then you may need the recovery key.

Instructions to use the boot media for Windows PE recovery

Insert the USB key into an affected device.

Restart the device.

During restart, press F12  to access the BIOS boot menu.

Note:  Some devices may use a different key combination to access the BIOS boot menu. Follow manufacturer-specific instructions for the device.

From the BIOS boot menu, choose Boot from USB and continue. The tool runs.

If BitLocker is enabled, the user will be prompted for the BitLocker recovery key. Include the dashes ( - ) when you enter the BitLocker recovery key. For more information on recovery key options, see Where to look for your BitLocker recovery key .

Note:  For non-Microsoft device encryption solutions, follow any steps provided by the vendor to gain access to the drive.

If BitLocker isn't enabled on the device, you may still be prompted for the BitLocker recovery key. Press Enter to skip and continue.

The tool runs the remediation steps as recommended by CrowdStrike .

Once complete, remove the USB drive and restart the device normally.

If you created media in the previous steps for safe mode, use these instructions on affected devices.

Prerequisites to use the boot media for safe mode recovery

Access to the local Administrator account.

If the affected device uses BitLocker TPM+PIN protectors, and you don't know the PIN for the device, then you may need the BitLocker recovery key .

Instructions to use the boot media for safe mode recovery

From the BIOS boot menu, choose Boot from USB and continue.

The tool runs and the following message appears: This tool will configure this machine to boot in safe mode. WARNING: In some cases you may need to enter a BitLocker recovery key after running.

Press any key to continue. The following message appears: Your PC is configured to boot to Safe Mode now.

Press any key to continue. The device restarts into safe mode.

Run  repair.cmd from the root of the media drive. The script runs the remediation steps as recommended by CrowdStrike .

The following message appears: This tool will remove impacted files and restore normal boot configuration. WARNING: You may need BitLocker recovery key in some cases. WARNING: This script must be run in an elevated command prompt.

Press any key to continue. The script runs and restores the normal boot mode.

Once the tool completes successfully, the following message appears: Success. System will now reboot.

Press any key to continue. The device restarts normally.

Use recovery media on Hyper-V virtual machines

You can use the recovery media to remediate affected Hyper-V virtual machines (VM). When you create the boot media , select the option to generate an ISO file .

Note:  For non-Hyper-V VMs, follow instructions provided by your hypervisor vendor to use the recovery media.

Start the VM and press any key to continue booting to the ISO image.

Depending on how you created the recovery media, follow the additional steps to use the Windows PE or safe mode recovery options.

Set the boot order back to the original boot settings from the VM’s Hyper-V settings.

Restart the VM normally.

Use PXE for recovery

For most customers, the other recovery options will help restore your devices. However, if devices are unable to use the option to recover from USB, for example, because of security policies or port availability, IT admins can use PXE to remediate.

To use this solution, you can use the Windows Imaging Format (WIM) image that the Microsoft recovery tool creates in an existing PXE environment. The affected devices need to be on the same network subnet as the existing PXE server.

Alternatively, you can use the PXE server approach outlined below. This option works best when you can easily move the PXE server from subnet to subnet for remediation purposes.

Prerequisites for PXE recovery

A 64-bit Windows device that hosts the boot image. This device is referred to as the “PXE server.”

The PXE server can run on any supported Windows client 64-bit OS.

The PXE server should have internet access to download the Microsoft PXE tool  from the Microsoft Download Center. You can also copy it to the PXE server from another system on your network.

The PXE server should have inbound firewall rules created for UDP ports 67, 68, 69, 547, and 4011. The downloaded PXE tool (MSFTPXEToolForCS.exe) updates the Windows Firewall settings on the PXE server. If the PXE server uses a non-Microsoft firewall solution, create rules following their recommendations.

Note:  This script doesn't clean up the firewall rules. You should remove these firewall rules after remediation is complete. To remove these rules from the Windows Firewall , open Windows PowerShell as an administrator and run the following command: MSFTPXEInitToolForCS.ps1 clean

Administrative privileges to run the PXE tool.

The PXE server requires the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Download and install the latest version .

The affected Windows devices should be on the same subnet as the PXE server. They should be hard-wired instead of using a Wi-Fi network.

Configure the PXE server

Download the Microsoft PXE tool  from the Microsoft Download Center. Extract the contents of the zip archive to any directory. It contains all of the necessary files.

Open Windows PowerShell as an administrator . Change to the directory where you extracted the files and run the following command: MSFTPXEInitToolForCS.ps1

The script scans for the Windows ADK and Windows PE Add-On installation on the PXE server. If they're not installed, the script installs them. To proceed with installation, review and accept the license terms.

The script generates the remediation scripts and creates a valid boot image.

If required, accept the prompt and provide a path containing the driver files. Driver files may be required for keyboard or mass storage devices. Generally, you won't need to add drivers. If you don't need any additional driver files, select N .

You can configure the PXE server to deliver a default remediation image or a safe mode image. You'll see the following prompts: 1. Boot to WinPE to remediate the issue. It requires entering BitLocker recovery key if system disk is BitLocker encrypted. 2. Boot to WinPE configure safe mode and run repair command after entering safe mode. This option is less likely to require BitLocker recovery key if system disk is BitLocker encrypted.

The script generates the required distribution files and provides the path where it copies the PXE server tool.

Double-check the prerequisites for PXE recovery , especially the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.

From the PowerShell console as an administrator, change to the directory where the PXE server tool is copied, and run the following command to launch the listener process:  .\MSFTPXEToolForCS.exe

You won't see additional responses as the PXE server handles connections. Don't close this window as that will stop the PXE server.

You can monitor the PXE server progress in the MSFTPXEToolForCS.log file in the same directory.

Note:  If you want to run multiple PXE servers for different subnets, copy the directory with the PXE server tool, and rerun steps 3 & 4.

Use PXE to recover an affected device

The affected device must be on the same subnet as PXE server. If the devices are in different subnets, configure IP helpers in your network environment to enable the discovery of the PXE server.

If the affected device isn't configured for PXE boot, follow these steps:

On the affected device, access the BIOS\UEFI menu.

This action is different across different models and manufacturers. Refer to documentation provided by the original equipment manufacturer for the specific make and model of the device.

Common options for accessing the BIOS\UEFI involve pressing a key like F2, F12, DEL, or ESC during the startup sequence.

Ensure Network boot is enabled on the device. For additional guidance, refer to documentation from the device manufacturer.

Configure the network boot option as the first boot priority.

Save the new settings. Restart the device for the settings to apply and boot from PXE.

When you PXE boot the affected device, the behavior will depend upon whether you chose Windows PE or safe mode recovery media for the PXE server.

For more information on these options, see the additional steps to use the Windows PE or safe mode recovery options.

For the Windows PE recovery option, the user is prompted to boot to Windows PE and the remediation script runs automatically.

For the safe mode recovery option, the device boots to safe mode. The user needs to sign in with the local Administrator account and manually run the script.

In safe mode and signed in as the local Administrator, open Windows PowerShell as an administrator.

Run the following commands: del %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike\C-00000291*.sys bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot shutdown -r -t 00

Once complete, restart the device normally by responding to the prompt on the screen. Access the BIOS\UEFI menu and update the boot order to remove PXE boot.

In a follow-up message on X on Sunday, Biden also announced that he's endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.

My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats -- it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," he wrote.

Verification of Death:

In order to publish obituaries a name and phone number of funeral home/cremation society is required. If you’re looking for a way to become confused in record time, I have you covered. With a cover letter, that is. Here’s what you do: Type into your favorite web browser, “Are cover letters necessary” and get ready for that head-spinning sensation that comes with multiple conflicting answers.

Or, skip the confusion and just believe me: Yes, cover letters are necessary.

Despite the surveys stating many employers ignore them, or that fewer than half of candidates send them (which I find head-spinning in itself), or even the polls showing that recent hires were the ones who did send letters … despite all the information out there, I default to a simple tie-breaking question: Why wouldn’t you write a letter?

It’s not as if recruiters are going to throw out your application because you included a letter. They’ll just decline to read it. But what if someone does want a letter and you didn’t use one? That’s not a chance you’ll get back.

So send a letter and stop worrying about whether you “need” to. Do it because some people want a letter and you don’t know which ones they are. It’s cheap insurance, and if you set up a system, it doesn’t need to take very long.

If you’re interested in such a system, you won’t be surprised to learn it involves templates. You just need a few models that you can modify for different purposes. Here are three that I commonly use as starting points.

• Template one simply acknowledges that you’re sending materials. It would usually be sent in the body of your email:

I have attached my résumé in response to your posting for a ____. Thank you in advance for considering me; I look forward to the opportunity to discuss this position in the near future.

• Template two is more detailed and more customized to the position. This model is best used for situations in which you fit requested criteria fairly well, eliminating the need to explain very much.

As a ______ with __ years of experience, I was very excited to see your posting for a ___. In reviewing your needs, I see that my skills match the required criteria. I also have a number of additional strengths and work experiences that would be helpful.

My résumé contains more details, but here are the highlights of what I could offer in this role:

(Include four or five bullets with short sentences or phrases noting your main assets for the job. You can also incorporate some of the key words from their posting – but don’t copy and paste whole phrases.)

I would be interested in discussing this opportunity further, and look forward to talking with you soon.

• Template three is nearly entirely customized, which makes the use of boilerplate paragraphs an important time-saver. Despite this apparent oxymoron, you’ll see that customizing boilerplates is usually easier than writing a fresh letter each time.

As an admirer of XYZ Corporation (any warm opening can be used, including a reference to a mutual contact, or perhaps acknowledgement of the company’s success) I’m delighted to respond to your posting for a ___ ( or) I’m interested in talking with you about current or future needs for a ____.)

With in-depth experience as a ____ and additional strengths in ___ and ___, I can make solid contributions in this position. As you’ll see from my résumé, my background includes ____, which has brought me in frequent contact with your company (or some other information that connects you to the company or field) . My contacts in the field and my understanding of related regulations (or whatever your key strengths are) will let me make an immediate contribution in your department.

Your cover letter is one of the most important pieces of your job application. In it, you have the opportunity to showcase your aptitude for writing as well as your experience, skills, and even your personality. Yet we often balk when crafting a cover letter, as the options of what to write about can seem overwhelming.

Before you begin writing a cover letter, it can be helpful to start with knowing what not to write about. Here are some phrases never to include in a cover letter, along with alternatives to use in order to make your cover letter as compelling as possible.

1. “To whom it may concern”

As the first line a hiring manager sees when reading your cover letter, the salutation you choose carries more weight than you might think. Using a salutation such as “To whom it may concern” or “Dear Sir or Madam” is an immediate red flag to the person reading your cover letter. Not only is it awkwardly formal and impersonal, but it also indicates you haven't done your research to determine the name of the person who'll be reading your letter. It's best to take the time to do some research on LinkedIn or the company's website to find the name of the hiring manager or recruiter who'll be reading your letter. If you truly can't find the name of the person, use “Dear Hiring Manager” as your salutation.

2. “Detail-oriented”; “outside-the-box thinker”; “dynamic”

Try to stay away from clichéd adjectives, as they don't provide any specific information about you that will distinguish you from other candidates. Being “detail-oriented” may sound impressive to you, but buzzwords like this are overused and vague. “To Whom It May Concern”

Personalization will take your cover letter from an OK submission to a grade A application – after all, there’s a human reading on the other end, and you have to make that connection to get noticed. Starting off your cover letter with “To Whom It May Concern” is impersonal and makes employers think you’re mass emailing your letter to any and all open positions.

To grab the employer’s attention, address your letter to the decision-makers in the company; Googling a hiring manager or head of the department involves minimal effort on your end, and it goes a long way.  If you can’t find the person you need to address, then a “To Whom It May Concern” isn’t bad — but you should still try to start your letter with something more detailed like, “To the Company X Hiring Managers” or “To the Company Y Marketing Department.” It will show employers that you put a little extra thought into your cover letter before clicking “Send.”

“I’m a really hard worker.”

You may be the hardest worker the company has ever seen, but everyone uses this phrase when applying for a job; it’s not something that will distinguish you from any other candidate. Think of some of your more original traits coupled with a story that proves you can do exactly what you say you can do, e.g. “When working at my last company, I used my creative marketing skills to increase monthly signups by 40%.”

“I think that I would be a great fit because…”

This phrase is wrong for two reasons: the first being that it is yet another generic phrase that can be found in any cover letter. However, the real reason we’ve mentioned it is because your cover letter is the time to sell yourself, to convince the employer that you’re the best candidate they’ve ever come across. Avoid using weak language like “I think,” “I hope” or “I wish” and instead, take control of the hiring manager’s attention with strong, self-assured language. For example, “This position speaks to my customer service and retention skills” or “My three years of experience in ed tech make me well-equipped to take on product testing and user experience at your company.”

Note that you shouldn’t be arrogant: You can balance confidence and humility by showcasing your capabilities while also talking up the company and its accomplishments to show the employer what an incredible opportunity this would be for you.

Did you read the job description? Because that’s exactly what the employer will wonder when he or she sees that you’ve listed out all your incredible skills that, unfortunately, have absolutely nothing to do with the position. Map out the parts of the position that speak to your work experience or skill set, and then reflect your tailored qualifications in your cover letter. It’s an added bonus to think of an impressive story that supports each of your points for why you’d be best for the position so that it comes across clearly and convincingly in your writing. (That doesn’t mean you actually need to tell a story for every qualification you list – remember that your cover letter should be no longer than a page!)

“I may not have a lot of experience, but…”

*Delete.* If you’re a student or a recent grad, employers already know that you don’t have a lot of experience up your sleeve: Your cover letter should make them second guess their underestimation, not confirm it.

Be confident in your abilities and make sure that comes across in your writing – you may have a lot of potential, but this is the time to talk about what you can bring to the table right now. How will the company benefit from hiring you?

Phrases that rehash your resume.

Your cover letter isn’t the time rattle off a list of the same accomplishments you mentioned on your resume – instead, the purpose is to give the employer a more well-rounded version of who you are as a candidate. It’s your extra edge, so use it to talk about an accomplishment that isn’t on your resume. As an alternative, you can elaborate or provide more information on a resume bullet point that you think needs more attention.
