The aim of this study is to explore the extent to which the bilingual acquisition research plays a major part in bilingual acquisition theories. This study reports the language development of a bilingual child from a Tamil and English language speaking home from the first vocal sound to the holophrastic stage.it elaborates how in each stage the child develops her bilinguality in both comprehension and production. The study was carried out by maintaining the proper records of the child's utterances in the form of 'diary' and digital recording and the traditional method of phonetic transcription was used to record utterances. The research method applied in this study is longitudinal and naturalistic observational sampling in nature, as most of the early bilingual researchers apply. The results of this study reveals contrary to the myth in bilingual language acquisition both the skills of comprehension and production in one language is always dominant, parallel and equal than the other language at a given time. This study falsifies the myth the comprehension skill is more dominant in one language (English) than the other language (Tamil), and at the same time production is vice versa (more dominant in Tamil than English). This case study reveals that the skills of comprehension and production are not language oriented but the accessibility of child, based on language choice.

Many first language acquisition (FLA) studies have found a strong correlation between lexical and grammatical development in early language acquisition. For bilingual first language acquisition (BFLA), the development of grammar is also found to be correlated with the size of the lexicon in each language. This case study investigates how a Malay-English bilingual child developed the lexicon and grammar in each of her languages and considers possible evidence of interaction between the languages during acquisition. The study also aims to show that the predominant linguistic environment to which the child was alternatively exposed might have played an important role in her lexical and grammatical development. Thus, the study presents two sets of data: (a) a 12-month longitudinal investigation when the child was 2;10 up till 3;10 in Australia and (b) a one-off elicitation session at age 4;8 when the family was in Malaysia. The findings show that not only the emergence of grammar is lin...

The techniques of collecting data used are documentation and observation. The objectives of descriptive qualitative study are obtained from the utterances of a 1.6 year old boy, his name is Fati. On the discussion part the analysis will focus on syntax, vocabulary and the factors that affect him in acquiring language. As the object, the boy is obtained four languages as simultaneous languages, namely Indonesian, English, Mandailingnese and Javanese. In conclusion, the object of this case is able to produce words and phrases based on he usually heard

The present study discusses about the monolingual and bilingual child language acquisition on theoretical concern and the varied language acquisition processes which reflect in the language competence of both monolingual and bilingual child. It provides a detailed account of the different terminologies exists in literature of child language acquisition, particularizing the notion of Chomsky’s Universal Grammar (UG). It links and differentiates the study of language acquisition of monolingual children from the bilingual in light of four important criteria. Finally, the papers suggest/points out as a concluding note how the study of child bilingualism could make a significant contribution in the area of language acquisition research. Index Terms Language Acquisition, Language Development, Bilingual Acquisition, Monolingual Child, Bilingual Child, Universal grammar

The main purpose of this study is to explore and examine an early bilingual child whose use of English might be different on the account of the context the child uses English. Specifically, it was sought to find out if the child resorted to different phonological varieties as well as different interaction patterns while communicating. The relevant data were collected through spontaneous speech samples while the bilingual child was playing games with one of his care-takers and through a questionnaire filled out by two English-speaking native-speakers, where they intuitively judged the child on a phonological basis. The scrutiny of the data revealed that there were times where the child sounded more like his monolingual English-speaking peers; however, there was also evidence claiming the opposite, meaning the child used the language in different ways and accommodated to his Philippine nanny. Also, the questionnaire completed by the native-speakers indicated that there were some cases...

The toddler’s first words were unintelligible speech by adult. This study was conducted to investigate the language development undergone by a 18-months bilingual toddler. The study of language development had two perspectives in terms of clinical and linguistic perspective. This study was a linguistic perspective to find out the language development processes especially in phonological processes undergone by a 18-months bilingual toddler. This study employed descriptive case study as the method with observation and video recording as the data collection. The participant of this study was a 18-months Javanesse-Indonesian toddler. The data were collected for 30 days. The data were categorized and analyzed based on Ingram's theory (1976). The result revealed that there were three categories of phonological processes undergone by 18-months Javanesse-Indonesian toddler such as substitution, assimilatory, and syllable structure processes. The syllable structure processes with initial...
