Feedback Champions

Fostering a supportive feedback culture, computer-mediated annotations (e.g. e-assignments, turnitin), posted on february 16, 2015 by laurence georgin in 1-to-1/ detailed feedback , class/ general feedback , feedback technologies, what is it.

Following a number of low scores on the National Student Survey, several departments across the University of Southampton started to use online platforms such as E-Assignments or Turnitin to mark assignments and deliver feedback. This has proved to be particularly successful with students who maintain that annotated scripts are very helpful and particularly useful in terms of written assignments. As a result, many departments have found that their feedback scores in the National Student Survey have improved. For further information regarding E-Assignments, visit: https://www.assignments.soton.ac.uk/public/Help.aspx . For Turnitin, visit:  http://www.southampton.ac.uk/isolutions/computing/elearn/blackboard/esub/staffplagiarism.html

Once students’ assignments and exam scripts have been marked, many academic staff post solutions to common problems experienced by students. This can be a useful way of giving a large amount of feedback to students, which can be used year after year.

How can students make the most of it?

It is important that students take the time to go through any feedback they may have received and identify not only their strengths, but also their weaknesses. This will consequently allow them to concentrate their efforts on their weaknesses, and make further progress. Similarly, if students find that their department doesn’t use online platforms, such as E-Assignments, to deliver feedback, they should talk to either their course rep or lecturer about it.

Policy and Process

Policy and Processes for Assessment at the University of Southampton

A guide to University assessment polices is held in the Quality Handbook .

Please visit the Assessment Timetables tab for details of processes for main assessment periods for undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes.

Assessment through coursework (assignments) is handled by your Faculty's Student Office; please contact them directly for information, or view the Faculty website for specific programme details.

Assessment Overview:

Assessment at the University of Southampton is designed to:

  • be an efficient, integral part of the curriculum
  • to assess learning outcomes
  • to be fair with transparent marking policies, and assessment outcomes being monitored to ensure inclusivity
  • to balance both the formative and summative to enable meaningful feedback
  • to be incremental and sufficiently demanding
  • to be redeemable (e.g. have policies for re-sits and re-submissions)

Source: Quality Handbook, University of Southampton

Each Programme of Study (course) will use a variety of assessments in order to judge learning outcomes, including essays, written assessment, group work, dissertations and projects, and others. Programme Creation and the subsequent reviews will determine what type of assessment and the weighting contributing to the final award is appropriate.
