Structure of research article abstracts in three Philippine international refereed journals: Towards a proposed genre model across disciplines—Features and patterns

Profile image of Camilo M Villanueva, Jr

The exploratory-descriptive study looks at Philippine research article (RA) abstracts to find out how closely they adhere to and how far they depart from internationally established standards to identify the set of generic structural patterns and features founded on and representative of how Filipinos think, summarize, and write abstracts for disparate content domains and for a global audience. Thirty randomly selected abstracts (10 for each journal published online between 2001 and 2010) to research papers written in English by Filipinos were analyzed for structure based on the frameworks of move patterns by Swales (1990) and Bhatia (1993) and content development by Hans–Vaughn & Onwuegbuzie (2010) as primary variable as well as for standard features, specifically tense use/shifts and length based on number of words, as secondary variables in order to lay down generic standards based on Philippine texts that will serve as groundwork in proposing a Philippine genre exemplar that may be applied across disciplines. The initial findings on the characteristics and features--specifically, move patterns, tense use, and number of words--of abstracts in three Philippine internationally refereed journals (Asean Journal of Chemical Engineering, The DLSU B&E Review, and Philosophia--International Journal of Philosophy) reveal the following specifications as the most preferred based on actual usage. On the one hand, abstract structure follows (a) content development that is mainly problem/purpose > conclusion but may also be from problem/purpose > method > conclusion; (b) move development that is either purpose > conclusion or purpose > method > conclusion; and (c) move development that is largely introduction > method > discussion. On the other hand, the most characteristic features include (a) being in or using the present tense as against a few that uses the past tense and (b) having an average length of 130.1 words across disciplines. Comparison of these findings with and against international standard move patterns and features not only moves toward benchmarking specifications for the genre of Philippine RA abstracts but also identifies key elements in Filipino communicative styles that cuts through disciplinary borders and across multicultural boundaries.

The existence of abstract is compulsory within a research article (RA). Abstract is a summary or brief overview that describes entire content of RA. At a glimpse, abstract tells readers what the RA is all about and at the same time, it acknowledges readers and allows them indirectly to give pre-assessment about quality of the RA. This study aims to find rhetorical moves and linguistic features; tenses and voice forms of RA abstracts by Indonesian authors in Applied Linguistics published in international journals. Using content analysis method, sixty RA abstracts were extracted from two international journals; Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics (IJAL) and TEFLIN journal, and examined based on their rhetorical move following five-move model by Hyland (2005) and Arsyad (2014) for fact-finding. The results reveal; 1) Move 2 (Aim/ Purpose), Move 3 (Method) and Move 4 (Finding/ Result) exist in total sixty RA abstracts, unlike Move 1 (Introduction) and Move 5 (Conclusion and Sugges...

Rhetorical move analyses of research article (RA) abstracts have established variations across disciplines and cultures. However, there is still a need for more explorations on Applied Linguistics discipline. Comparing native and other group of non-native speakers of English, such as Filipino users of the language, has also been a neglect in research as far as the researcher’s knowledge is concerned. Hence, this study investigated the rhetorical moves in the RA abstracts of American and Filipino writers who are published in two journals related to Applied Linguistics field. The study also explored the lexical verbs underlying each move in all the abstracts. Each abstract was then segmented into moves. Findings revealed that the moves Situating the Research (STR), Presenting the Research (PTR), and Discussing the Research (DTR) were obligatorily used by both groups of writers, while the moves Describing the Methodology (DTM) and Summarizing the Findings (STF) were obligatory only amo...

A plethora of research has shown that genre analysis through move analysis is a practical approach to identify the complexity of writing research articles (RAs). However, little is known about the genre knowledge development that is manifested in abstract discourse patterns. This study aims to determine whether or not there is an influence from the level of education with the development of genre knowledge, especially in the field of writing research abstracts. Using Hyland’s (2000) five-move analysis model, this study analyzed the comparison and identity of abstracts of theses and dissertations in English and Indonesian. From the analysis, it can be seen that there are some differences and similarities in the manifestation of abstract discourse patterns in English and Indonesian final paper abstracts. In terms of genre knowledge, its development could be reflected through the level of study, in this case, from master’s to doctoral degrees. As evident in the dissertation abstracts i...

The abstract has become the first part that will be read by readers in a research article. Some important aspects in the abstract are move structure and linguistic features. This study examines the rhetorical moves and linguistic features of English research article abstract written by three groups of authors in Applied Linguistics. The research design was mixed method design combining quantitative and qualitative method with the corpus of this study consisted of 60 abstracts by postgraduate students, national and international authors found in RA abstracts. The results show that the common moves by three groups of authors have only three moves (i.e purpose, method, and results). The common linguistic features used by three groups of authors are active voice, present tense, and simple sentence. By comparing the three groups of abstracts the differences are found in the postgraduate students authors. They were used move 1 (Background/ introduction/ situation) fewer than national and international authors. Furthur the postgraduate students used past tense more dominant than present tense and using hedges is more frequently than national and international authors. This study concludes that in writing RA abstracts a writer should adjust the commonly used rules the abstract especially in using 5 moves in the abstracts. INTRODUCTION An abstract is the first part that will be read in the publication journal, research article, thesis, and so on. The readers can overview the content of a journal by reading an abstract. Submitting an abstract is an important thing even in national or international journal. The objective can be more detail seen by reading the abstract. Abstract is beneficial for the reader to identify the keywords that will make it easier for exploring the research.

The abstract is an important part of any research articles. In recent years, many pedagogical approaches have realized that lack of proper writing support in writing research article abstract can frustrate the writers and make their research paper less-effective. The present study present rhetorical move analysis of the research article abstracts by employing Hyland's 2010 model of move analysis. The data was collected from the two volumes of the National University of Modern Languages' Journal of Critical Inquiry. The results show that the purpose move is the most frequent move, while the conclusion move is the most lest frequent in the abstract published in the Journal of Critical Inquiry. The present study suggests that the researchers use the purpose move in their abstracts with the highest frequency and are less inclined to use conclusion move.

Abstracts are an essential part of research articles (RAs) because they are the readers' first encounter in their search for relevant literature. Writing an effective abstract in English which can "sell" the article to a wider circle of readers is therefore important to novice writers, especially multilingual ones. Based on the corpus of 584 English abstracts of Thai empirical RAs published by six Rajabhat (teacher-training) university journals which are indexed in the Thai-journal citation index center (TCI), this study aims to explore not only their rhetorical structures but also the grammatical and interactional metadiscourse features. The results show that there were three types of abstracts (Informative, Indicative and Combinatory) and the absence of certain moves in a large number of abstracts of each type. Moreover, this abstract corpus had a few instances of move embedding, a complete absence of move cycles and the existence of abstracts with several paragraphs. Regarding the linguistic features, there was a prominent presence of active voice, future tense and the sparing use of interactional meta-discourse devices across the moves. These findings tend to indicate a need for journal editors and novice writers, especially those from non-English backgrounds to be informed about the characteristics of good RA abstracts in English (i.e., rhetorically and linguistically) and an increased amount of form-based instruction in academic courses to address the linguistic deficiencies of new multilingual writers.

Research article (RA] abstract is regarded as an essential part in identifying the basic content of the report among the current academic communities. This study aimed at investigating whether native and nonnative academic writers differed in terms of rhetorical moves as well as the use of verb tense in abstracts. To achieve this end, a sample of 40 RA abstracts (20 by American and 20 by Iranian academic writers] in English was selected from International Journal of Language Studies (IJLS). The data analysis revealed that move two [Purpose], three [Method], and four [Result] were considered the obligatory structural moves in both sets of data, while move one [Introduction] and move five [Conclusion] served as optional moves. With regard to the use of verb tense in each move, it was found that present tense was the preferred tense in move one and five, but past tense was used in move three more frequently in two sets of data. It was also shown that while the present tense was the preferred tense for Americans in move two and four, Iranians more often used the past tense. The findings of this study can help academic writers, teachers and students and raise their awareness to master the conventions of academic writing in scientific communities.
