What To Consider When Choosing the Best Clinical Research Companies?

Choosing the right clinical research company (CRC) is crucial for the success of any clinical trial. Here’s a detailed guide on what to consider:

What To Consider When Choosing the Best Clinical Research Companies

Expertise and Specialization

Always ensure the CRC has expertise in your specific therapeutic area. Companies with experience in similar drug trials or medical devices can better navigate the complexities of your project.

Regulatory Compliance

The CRC must adhere to regulatory guidelines like FDA (US) , EMA (Europe), and others. Check their track record in meeting these standards to avoid compliance issues.

Reputation and Track Record

You should research the company’s history. Look for testimonials, case studies, and reviews from past clients. A company with a strong reputation is likely to deliver quality results.

Project Management Capabilities

Effective project management is key. Assess their ability to manage timelines, budgets, and communication. A CRC that provides transparent, regular updates is preferable.

Patient Recruitment Strategies

Patient recruitment can be challenging. Evaluate their strategies for participant recruitment and retention. Consider their demographic reach and methods for ensuring a diverse participant pool.

Data Management and Analysis

The CRC should have strong systems for data collection, management, and analysis. Ask about their use of Electronic Data Capture (EDC) systems and how they handle data security and confidentiality.

Cost and Financial Terms

Get a clear understanding of the cost structure. Consider the value for money rather than just the lowest cost. Ensure there are no hidden fees and clarify what is included in the quoted price.

The scientific research & development industry includes the activities of three types of research and development: basic research, applied research, and experimental development. Basic research includes experimental or theoretical work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge of the underlying foundations of phenomena and observable facts, without particular application or use in view. Applied research includes original investigation undertaken in order to acquire new knowledge, directed primarily towards a specific practical aim or objective. Experimental development includes systematic work, drawing on existing knowledge gained from research and/or practical experience, directed to producing new materials, products and devices, to installing new processes, systems and services, and to improving substantially those already produced or installed. The number of large companies in the scientific research & development industry is an indicator of the overall economic performance of that sector. Not only do these companies provide jobs for the local markets, but they are also able to achieve success in global markets, thus generating greater value.

Positive experience working with TBRC as an expert. TBRC reached out to me in early 2022 requesting insights about certain instruments and tools used in the field of Neurosurgery in the US, particularly when related to traumatic brain injury and stroke. They had a list of questions that were sent to me prior to the meeting, which we went through during the meeting (via conference call/ phone). My responses triggered some additional inquiries. The interview took place on time, and did not go over the time allocated. The team members at TBRC were punctual, professional and clear about their needs. Overall, it was a positive experience. I would work with them again.

Customer-obsessed science means inventing and applying scientific approaches to understand and solve customer problems. It’s not just about coming up with the best algorithm or model you can think of, but proving it with sound methodology and ensuring it’s applicable to real-world challenges. This is core to everything that we do at Amazon, and it’s what makes us different. We start with our customers and work backwards from their needs, testing and improving our products and services based on their behavior and feedback.

bryon-cook.png

Christopher Stratchey wrote, "The separation of practical and theoretical work is artificial and injurious. Much of the practical work done in computing, both in software and in hardware design, is unsound and clumsy because the people who do it have not any clear understanding of the fundamental design principles of their work. Most of the abstract mathematical and theoretical work is sterile because it has no point of contact with real computing." Our customer-obsessed science strategy reliably nudges me back towards the intersection of the practical and theoretical. That's where the really game-changing work is at.

salal-humair_grey_230517221746.png

It means first developing a conviction that the problem we are working on is or will be truly important to customers. It's like asking the five whys — all starting with, ‘Who cares about the problem, and why should they care?’ — before getting down to a mathematical model. Once we are convinced about the value, it's about developing the right science to address the problem — and the problems that have the most customer impact in the long-term often require exciting new science and systems. This helps us focus on science that will really move the needle for our customers and stand the test of time.

gerard-medioni-002_grey_230517221637.png

Customer-obsessed science means to always put yourself in the customer's shoes to improve the experience. It also means listening to customer pain points, and inventing on their behalf. They will tell you what they don't like, but it is up to us to provide solutions to delight them. Just Walk Out is a prime example of innovative solution addressing the "nobody likes to wait in line" customer pain point.

rajeev-rastogi_grey_230517221737.png

Customer-obsessed science aims to solve customer problems and improve customer experiences. It is aligned with business priorities and brings value to our business. It is science that works backwards from customer needs and pain points, as opposed to forward from technology. It's important not to confuse customer-obsessed science with science that has a short time-horizon — customer-obsessed science be focused on the long-term.

justine-hastings_grey_230517221654.png

Customer-obsessed science means that you focus on understanding the customer's problem and bringing the best scientific tools to solve the problem. It means that you are not dogmatic about methods, but seek to apply the best method or combination of methods to solve the customer's problem. You invent and simplify, seeking expertise by partnering with others if the best method(s) is not your specialty.

Spyros Matsoukas, Senior Principal Applied Scientist, Alexa AI

Research and development that is grounded on real-world challenges and customer-facing problems. Only by working backwards from the customer, including defining metrics that characterize customer experience, we can ensure that our scientific innovations have measurable impact on customers’ lives.

nikko-strom_grey_230517221825.png

Customer obsession in science means applying the scientific method in service of our customers. Working backwards from the customer; their needs, wants, and pain points, is focusing our work on scientific innovation that is truly impactful. But science is a creative endeavor -- we often find surprises and new insights along the way. As we do, we continuously evaluate new ways to delight our customers.

Douglas Terry.jpeg

Customer-obsessed science is about anticipating customers' needs by devising innovative solutions to challenging problems that customers do not yet realize they have or will have. This allows us to respond quickly with enhanced services when these needs do arise.

Garrett van Ryzin

I was always attracted to practical science — calculating where a projectile will land, how current flows in a circuit, what determines supply and demand. I love understanding how the world works and using this knowledge to make things better. And this is exactly what Amazon's customer-obsessed science is all about, working backwards from what customers value and using science to innovate and make their lives better. It's what great science is all about.

MyData-TRUST, new to NC, plans Sept. 10 data privacy summit for life sciences

A summit on data privacy and protection in the life sciences will draw up to 100 professionals to the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in Research Triangle Park (RTP) on Sept. 10 for a full day of presentations, panel discussions and networking.

More than a dozen experts will discuss recent developments in the field for an audience of data privacy, legal and compliance professionals, as well as professionals in clinical operations, data management, informatics and IT security, at pharmaceutical, biotech, medical tech and health care companies and contract research organizations (CROs).

The event, U.S. Data Privacy for Health 2024 , is being organized by MyData-TRUST , a Belgium-based global data protection and privacy consulting firm that specifically serves the life sciences industry. The N.C. Life Sciences Organization (NCLifeSci) and FBFK Law, a Texas law firm, are supporting the summit.

Attendees, who can register online , will receive Continuing Privacy Education (CPE) credits that can be applied to various professional certifications.

“Privacy and data protection in 2024 is an incredibly dynamic space, and recent developments in AI (artificial intelligence) have added a new dimension of excitement and complexity,” said Avery Miles, MyData-TRUST’s deputy director for the United States. “Our program speaks to the specific needs and challenges of professionals working with privacy and data protection within life sciences, clinical trials and the healthcare space, and offers practical insights that they can take back to their organizations. A full-day conference with high-quality, narrowly tailored data privacy content dedicated exclusively to life sciences is a rare find.”

Summit logo

Topics to be covered at the summit include:

  • Emerging data privacy regimes in the U.S. life sciences sector
  • Challenges and opportunities facing global DPOs (Data Protection Officers)
  • Running clinical trials in Europe: where GCP meets GDPR
  • CRO GDPR code of conduct
  • Data privacy for healthcare apps
  • How to effectively manage a data breach
  • AI in health care and clinical research

The event will also include networking sessions over lunch and after the day’s program.

Company new to North Carolina

MyData-TRUST established an East Coast office in June to expand its service offering and support its growing client base in the United States. The company chose the Research Triangle region over sites in Boston and New Jersey, Miles said. The Research Triangle’s advantages included relative affordability, a qualified workforce, major research universities and hospitals, direct flights to major cities, and a high concentration of CROs, pharmaceutical companies and biotech startups, he said.

The company is leasing temporary space at NCBiotech’s Landing Pad , which provides office space and services to companies new to the state and is planning a move to permanent space in the Research Triangle area.

“We are so grateful to NCBiotech for the opportunity to lease space at the Landing Pad,” Miles said. “We are in the ‘heart of the action,’ so to speak, and have taken advantage of the many networking opportunities to create brand awareness and make industry contacts.

MDT logo

The company has three employees at the new North Carolina office and is looking to fill a business development and sales position. “We will also be hiring additional operational roles in the near future,” Miles said.

Since its founding in 2017, MyData-TRUST has grown to 120 employees -- doubling since 2022 -- with offices in Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Romania, Mexico, San Francisco and now North Carolina.

Miles, a Greensboro native and graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was tapped to lead the East Coast office by the company’s founders, who knew him from his days as a data protection and privacy attorney in the CRO industry.

Miles started with Raleigh-based PRA Health Sciences (now ICON PLC), where he negotiated commercial contracts and clinical trial agreements, then held various positions during nine years with RTP-based Worldwide Clinical Trials, where he transitioned to data privacy full time.

“I left the CRO industry for a couple of years and had been working for large Fortune 500 companies in medtech and health care,” Miles said. I was excited to get back to working within a smaller organization where I could play a strategic role in growing a business. I’ve spent my entire career in life sciences and developed my own niche as a privacy professional within this space. In a lot of ways, I was custom-built for MyData-TRUST and was thrilled with the opportunity to join a team of talented, like-minded professionals from across the globe.

“I was also eager to get back to serving clients, especially in the biotech sector. It is immensely rewarding to help our clients build a privacy program, but also to be a part of a broader project or mission of bringing something meaningful into the world, like life-saving therapies.”

Filling an industry niche

Data privacy and protection in the life sciences is mostly concerned with safeguarding the personal and medical information of patients and research subjects. Such data is essential to product development and for demonstrating the safety and efficacy of drugs, therapies or medical devices to obtain regulatory approval.

“Data is the lifeblood of innovation in the life sciences industry,” Miles said. “Advances in technology and data science, fueled by AI and ML (machine learning), have meant that we can more efficiently analyze massive datasets and derive incredible insights like never before. These insights can improve healthcare, save lives and have profound positive impacts on the human experience.

“But when striving for these lofty goals, organizations must have measures in place to lawfully use the personal data they collect and safeguard the confidentiality of their patients and research subjects. As such, privacy should be considered an extension of an organization’s data-optimization strategy.”

Authorizing legitimate use of valuable patient data and protecting it from misuse or accidental or criminal breaches, is vital for a company to avoid fines, lawsuits and legal damages -- repercussions that can be “potentially existential for a startup biotech,” Miles said. Failure to comply with privacy laws and regulations can also delay clinical trials, costing companies time, money and trust.

“That’s real money and real risk to the ultimate goal of getting their study, drug or therapy approved,” Miles said. “In addition to the fines and reputational damage, you may end up with valuable data that you can’t use for your core objectives.”

As a cautionary tale, Miles cited the recent case of Enzo Biochem, a New York-based bioscience tools and diagnostics company. Enzo suffered a ransomware cyber-attack that compromised the clinical test results of more than 2.4 million patients and the Social Security numbers of 600,000 patients. The New York Attorney General subsequently fined the company $4.5 million for poor data-security practices.

Data privacy and protection is becoming a more complex challenge due to a rapidly changing and ever more stringent regulatory environment, Miles said.

“We have seen an explosion of new privacy and data protection laws both abroad and in the United States,” he said. “Compliance can be complicated, especially if you are new to privacy, in a new jurisdiction or dealing with co-regulatory frameworks such as Good Clinical Practice. If organizations want to successfully get their clinical trials up and running, and running smoothly thereafter, they need to fulfill all of these regulatory requirements.

“We are here to help organizations do just that, and we can deliver our service in a very nimble, cost-effective and tailored fashion because we are exclusively dedicated to the life sciences sector and understand the business. We have also embraced AI and technology in our privacy management solutions to increase efficiencies and reduce costs.

“We’re international so we can cover a wide range of jurisdictions, but we’re small enough that we continue to maintain our white-glove service standards for our clients. I would characterize us as a niche boutique, but the industry need is extensive. Organizations are starting to realize that privacy is not just a core value; it is a value proposition. MD-T delivers that value, and we’ve grown an entire multinational business out of it.”

By Rick Smith

On Aug. 26, 1999, NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory opened its powerful telescopic eye in orbit and captured its awe-inspiring “first light” images of Cassiopeia A , a supernova remnant roughly 11,000 light-years from Earth. That first observation was far more detailed than anything seen by previous X-ray telescopes, even revealing – for the first time ever – a neutron star left in the wake of the colossal stellar detonation.

Those revelations came as no surprise to Chandra project scientist Martin Weisskopf, who led Chandra’s development at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. “When you build instrumentation that’s 10 times more sensitive than anything that was done before, you’re bound to discover something new and exciting,” he said. “Every step forward was a giant step forward.”

Twenty-five years later, Chandra has repeated that seminal moment of discovery again and again, delivering – to date – nearly 25,000 detailed observations of neutron stars , quasars , supernova remnants , black holes , galaxy clusters , and other highly energetic objects and events, some as far away as 13 billion light-years from Earth.

Chandra has further helped scientists gain tangible evidence of dark matter and dark energy , documented the first electromagnetic events tied to gravitational waves in space, and most recently aided the search for habitable exoplanets – all vital tools for understanding the vast, interrelated mechanisms of the universe we live in.

This image features the Cassiopeia A supernova, an expanding ball of matter and energy ejected from an exploding star. Here, rings of neon blue and brilliant white emit veins of polished gold. The rings and their arching veins encircle a place of relative calm at the center of the supernova remnant. This hole at the center of the circle, and the three-dimensionality conveyed by the rings and their arching veins, give this image of Cassiopeia A the look of a giant, crackling, electric blue donut. X-rays detected by Chandra show debris from the destroyed star and the blast wave from the explosion.

“Chandra’s first image of Cas A provided stunning demonstration of Chandra’s exquisite X-ray mirrors, but it simultaneously revealed things we had not known about young supernova remnants,” said Pat Slane, director of the CXC ( Chandra X-ray Center ) housed at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “In a blink, Chandra not only revealed the neutron star in Cas A; it also taught us that young neutron stars can be significantly more modest in their output than what previously had been understood. Throughout its 25 years in space, Chandra has deepened our understanding of fundamental astrophysics, while also greatly broadening our view of the universe.”

To mark Chandra’s silver anniversary, NASA and CXC have shared 25 of its most breathtaking images and debuted a new video, “ Eye on the Cosmos. ”

Chandra often is used in conjunction with other space telescopes that observe the cosmos in different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, and with other high-energy missions such as ESA’s (European Space Agency’s) XMM-Newton ; NASA’s Swift , NuSTAR ( Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array ), and IXPE ( Imaging X-ray Polarization Explorer ) imagers, and NASA’s NICER ( Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer ) X-ray observatory, which studies high-energy phenomena from its vantage point aboard the International Space Station.

Chandra remains a unique, global science resource, with a robust data archive that will continue to serve the science community for many years.

“NASA’s project science team has always strived to conduct Chandra science as equitably as possible by having the world science community collectively decide how best to use the observatory’s many tremendous capabilities,” said Douglas Swartz, a USRA (Universities Space Research Association) principal research scientist on the Chandra project science team.

research company science

“Chandra will continue to serve the astrophysics community long after its mission ends,” said Andrew Schnell, acting Chandra program manager at Marshall. “Perhaps its greatest discovery hasn’t been discovered yet. It’s just sitting there in our data archive, waiting for someone to ask the right question and use the data to answer it. It could be somebody who hasn’t even been born yet.”

That archive is impressive indeed. To date, Chandra has delivered more than 70 trillion bytes of raw data. More than 5,000 unique principal investigators and some 3,500 undergraduate and graduate students around the world have conducted research based on Chandra’s observations. Its findings have helped earn more than 700 PhDs and resulted in more than 11,000 published papers, with half a million total citations.

Weisskopf is now an emeritus researcher who still keeps office hours every weekday despite having retired from NASA in 2022. He said the work remains as stimulating now as it was 25 years ago, waiting breathlessly for those “first light” images.

research company science

“We’re always trying to put ourselves out of business with the next bit of scientific understanding,” he said. “But these amazing discoveries have demonstrated how much NASA’s astrophysics missions still have to teach us.”

The universe keeps turning – and Chandra’s watchful eye endures.

Chandra, managed for NASA by Marshall in partnership with the CXC, is one of NASA’s Great Observatories, along with the Hubble Space Telescope and the now-retired Spitzer Space Telescope and Compton Gamma Ray Observatory . It was first proposed to NASA in 1976 by Riccardo Giacconi, recipient of the 2002 Nobel Prize for Physics based on his contributions to X-ray astronomy, and Harvey Tananbaum, who would later become the first director of the Chandra X-ray Center. Chandra was named in honor of the late Nobel laureate Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, who earned the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983 for his work explaining the structure and evolution of stars.

Super micro stock falls after short seller hindenburg research calls company 'serial recidivist' in new report.

Super Micro Computer ( SMCI ) stock fell more than 2% Tuesday following a report from short seller Hindenburg Research claiming, among other things , "accounting manipulation" at the AI high flyer.

Hindenburg Research said its three-month investigation "found glaring accounting red flags, evidence of undisclosed related party transactions, sanctions and export control failures, and customer issues." The firm disclosed Tuesday that it had taken a short position in Super Micro.

Yahoo Finance reached out to Super Micro and had not heard back from the company at the time of publication.

The maker of data center servers and management software captured the attention of investors this year as it rode the AI wave . The company buys components from AI chipmaker Nvidia ( NVDA ).

Super Micro shares soared from $290 in early January to north of $1200 by March. The stock is off about 50% from its March peak but is still up 90% year to date. The company recently announced a 10-for-1 stock split effective Oct. 1.

In its report, Hindenburg claimed that despite a $17.5 million settlement in August 2020 with the SEC following an inquiry for "widespread accounting violations," Super Micro's business practices did not improve and senior executives who had left amid the scandal were later rehired."

The report quotes a former salesperson: “Almost all of them are back. Almost all of the people that were let go that were the cause of this malfeasance.”

The report stated, “Even after the SEC settlement, pressure to meet quotas pushed salespeople to stuff the channel with distributors using 'partial shipments' or by shipping defective products around quarter-end, per our interviews with former employees and customers.”

"All told, we believe Super Micro is a serial recidivist," Hindenburg said in its report.

"It benefitted as an early mover but still faces significant accounting, governance and compliance issues and offers an inferior product and service now being eroded away by more credible competition."
