Doctoral programs.

The goal of the GSE PhD in Education is to prepare the next generation of leading education researchers. The cornerstone of the doctoral experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Education is the research apprenticeship that all students undertake, typically under the guidance of their academic advisor, but often with other Stanford faculty as well.

In this apprenticeship model, doctoral students are provided with a multi-year funding package that consists of opportunities each quarter to serve as teaching and research assistants for faculty members' courses and research projects. By this means, and in combination with the courses they take as part of their program, students are prepared over an approximately five-year period to excel as university teachers and education researchers.

The doctoral degree in Education at the GSE includes doctoral program requirements as well as a specialization, as listed below, overseen by a faculty committee from one of the GSE's three academic areas.

LSTD allows doctoral students to study learning sciences and technology design within the context of their primary program of study (DAPS, CTE, or SHIPS).

Race, Inequality, and Language in Education (RILE)

RILE trains students to become national leaders in conducting research on how race, inequality, and language intersect to make both ineffective and effective educational opportunities. RILE allows students to specialize within their program of study (DAPS, CTE, or SHIPS).

Doctor of Philosophy in Education

The Johns Hopkins School of Education’s full-time PhD program offers an individually tailored learning experience based on a student’s interest in finding solutions to pressing education problems. Select applicants receive full tuition and a stipend.

The School of Education will pause admission to the Doctor of Philosophy in Education (PhD) program for the 2025-26 academic year while we add several programmatic improvements. The next intake for admission to the PhD program will be for students who want to matriculate in the Fall 2026 semester. The online application will open in August 2025 to begin accepting submissions, and the application completion deadline will be December 16, 2025. The program provides rigorous interdisciplinary training that develops students’ abilities to conduct evidence-based research on real-world educational challenges. Instruction and mentorship emphasizes the development and evaluation of policies and practices that address real-world educational problems.

Students benefit from a one-to-one apprenticeship model that pairs exceptional interdisciplinary candidates with nationally acclaimed faculty mentors, along with engaging coursework, sophisticated methodological training, and cohort-based learning.

Program Overview

With its goal of pursuing big ideas and sharing knowledge to address real-world challenges, Johns Hopkins University takes pride in its founding mission as the U.S.’s first research university. The full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education at the Johns Hopkins School of Education embraces that tradition. We offer a world-class, research-focused program that prepares exceptional scholars to investigate and develop policies and practices that improve educational outcomes from pre-K through secondary school and beyond.

Students draw insights from different disciplines (e.g., educational psychology, learning sciences, sociology of education), synthesizing their knowledge to craft multidisciplinary, evidence-based approaches to address educational policies and practices — particularly those that can improve outcomes for historically underserved populations. Immersion in modern research methods — advanced statistical techniques, open science approaches, and data science — facilitates students’ capacities to argue for research-based educational reforms.

Students benefit from the mentorship of nationally acclaimed researchers in an apprenticeship model as well as collaborative learning opportunities from courses, research groups, and their cohort. Our graduates go on to careers in higher education as professors, policymakers, and influential scholars at research-intensive universities, institutes, and centers.

All PhD students at the School of Education are eligible for a fellowship for up to four years. The fellowship includes a yearly stipend and will cover tuition and fees. The fellowship also covers individual health, dental, and vision insurance. All PhD students must be registered full time and be in good academic standing every semester to continue to be eligible for their fellowship.

Through our PhD program, students acquire cutting-edge research skills that position them for tenure-track faculty positions in higher education, policymaking roles with state agencies or school systems, and leadership positions in educational research organizations.

Welcome to the graduate group in education phd program.

Our Ph.D. program critically engages students in contemporary issues that impact education research, policy and practice.  Emphasizing collaboration, the program is an interdisciplinary graduate group that draws its faculty from diverse fields of education, humanities, social science, physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and medicine, and engages with key campus centers and programs, such as the M.I.N.D. Institute and the Poverty Center.

Designed to foster scholarly engagement and impact the practice of education, students may select from 5 areas of emphasis:

Earning a doctorate in education can help educators develop the skills they need to move into management roles like principal, superintendent, or academic dean.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), over the next decade, there will be an average of 20,200 new job openings for elementary, middle school, and high school principals , who earn a median annual salary of $101,320. Demand for postsecondary education administrators , who earn a median annual salary of $99,940, is expected to grow at a similar rate, with an average of 15,300 new job openings per year.

The length of time it takes to complete a doctorate in education varies based on the number of credits a program requires, which can range from 40-90 credits. The cost of this degree also varies, with the Education Data Initiative reporting that, on average, a doctorate in education costs $62,780.

How to Choose a Doctorate in Education Degree Program

Choose your area of study.

There are a number of different options students can choose from when it comes to a doctorate in education, so the first step in selecting a program is identifying your specific area of study based on your educational and career goals.

Common areas of study include education leadership, education policy, curriculum and teaching, instructional technology and media, literacy studies, and higher education. Different areas of study will lead to different roles within the education system, such as roles in administration, research, or classroom instruction.

Students should also consider whether they want an EdD, which is a professional degree, or a PhD, which is a research-focused degree.

This is also a good time to consider the logistics of earning a doctorate in education. Can you attend a program with classes that meet during daytime hours, or do you need the flexibility of a program with evening and weekend classes? Will you be able to accommodate attending all classes in person, or do you also want to explore online doctorate programs ?

Research schools and programs

Establishing parameters for the type of doctorate in education program you’re seeking will help you narrow your options as you begin to conduct your research.

Most students start their research by visiting a school’s website, which typically publishes information about curriculum, faculty, experiential learning requirements, student outcomes, cost, and admissions requirements. If you have specific questions, contact the school’s admissions office or attend virtual or in-person information sessions, if available.

To help you determine if a program is a good fit, ask the following questions:

  • What is the program’s curriculum? How does it align with your interests and goals?
  • Who are the faculty members, and what are their qualifications?
  • Are there internship requirements or other experiential learning components?
  • What networking opportunities are available to students?
  • What support services does the institution offer graduate students, including tutoring, tech support, and mental health care?
  • What scholarship and financial aid opportunities are available?
  • What type of accreditation does the institution and program have?

Confirming the school’s accreditation status is essential, as this can impact your eligibility for financial aid, future employment, and further educational opportunities. Colleges in the U.S. can have regional or national accreditation , with regional accreditation being the more widely recognized accreditation status. Additionally, seek out doctorate in education programs that have programmatic accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) to ensure that they meet industry standards for educator preparation. You can verify if a school and program are accredited through the Council for Higher Education Accreditation’s database .

Prepare for tests and applications

Exact application requirements will vary by school, so be sure to review this information as you research programs. If you need clarification, speak to an admissions counselor from the schools you’re considering.

Most programs will require applicants to submit the following for a doctorate in education program:

  • Completed application and required fees
  • Official transcripts from all postsecondary schools previously attended
  • Letter(s) of recommendation
  • Resume or CV
  • Personal statement

If you haven’t yet taken the GRE or your scores are more than five years old, plan on taking this standardized test well before your application is due. There are multiple opportunities throughout the year for students to take the GRE and multiple ways to prepare, including self-paced study or prep classes.

Additionally, review any specific eligibility criteria the program may have, including a minimum amount of work experience or a specific undergraduate degree, to ensure that you qualify for the program.

Select your program

There is no specific number of doctorate in education programs a student should apply to. Some students focus on one or two programs that meet their specific needs, while others apply to multiple programs to increase their odds of acceptance. The most important thing is to select a program that meets your needs in terms of career preparation, scheduling logistics, and budget. If you apply to and are accepted by multiple programs, compare your options to the priorities you outlined in step one to help you decide which program is the best fit for you.

Determine how you’ll pay for your degree

If you haven’t already, get specific information about the program’s cost, including tuition and fees, and what financial aid resources are available. This information may be available on the school’s website, or you can contact the financial aid office to learn more.

Many doctoral programs offer fellowships or other forms of financial support to fully or partially cover the cost of the degree. When researching programs, students should inquire about the availability and eligibility requirements for these opportunities.

In terms of need-based aid, graduate students can apply for Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Direct PLUS Loans through the U.S. Department of Education’s Federal Student Aid program by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Colleges also use the information from this application to determine eligibility for institutional need-based aid, like scholarships and grants. Students enrolling in education-focused programs may also be eligible for TEACH Grants from the Federal Student Aid program.

Other sources of financial support include scholarships from external sources, such as professional organizations, nonprofits and private scholarship funds, and community and religious groups. Individuals who plan on working while earning their doctorate in education can also inquire with their employer about tuition assistance benefits . Many educational institutions offer this type of benefit to employees who are seeking additional education to prepare for high-level administrative roles.

Together, Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offer a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education with three concentration choices: Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS); Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE); and Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT). The Department of Education at the University of California–Los Angeles (UCLA) offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education: Urban Schooling that trains graduates to improve the practice of urban education by investigating the complex issues facing urban areas and their schools. The PhD follows an interdisciplinary approach to solving problems in education by drawing on other disciplines such as political science, sociology, economics, linguistics, history, and psychology. Admission to the program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for undergraduate and graduate work; GRE verbal and quantitative scores of 150 each; and proven related career interest. A master’s degree is preferred; students entering the program without an approved master’s must take a Doctoral Screening Exam in the spring term of the first year or the fall term of the second year. Two strands are offered: Education, Schooling, and Social Transformation (EST) and Design, Learning, and Social Transformation (DLT). Core courses required for both strands include Schools as Social Institutions; Schools in Social Contexts; and Schools, People, & Power. Other cross-strand courses include Social Theories of Practice; Learning & Identity; and Language Issues in Education. The program takes most students around five years to complete and culminates with a doctoral qualifying exam as well as a dissertation. UCLA also offers combined Master of Arts (MA) and PhD programs in Higher Education & Organizational Change; Human Development and Psychology; Social Research Methodology; and Social Sciences and Comparative Education, as well as several Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Doctor of Education (EdD) programs and a postgraduate certificate open to doctoral students.

Northwestern University

Northwestern University offers an interdisciplinary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Human Development and Social Policy (HDSP) that draws on the study of anthropology, political science, economics, sociology, and psychology to answer questions about public policy as it relates to human development. Coursework related to human development includes Child Development; Adolescent Development; Adult Development and Aging; and Nature-Nurture Revisited. Courses in the social policy discipline include Social-Community Interventions; Topics: Organizations, Institutions and Society: Persistence and Change Among Public, Private and Non-Profit Sectors; and Educational Policy: Design, Implementation and Effects. Additional methods coursework is required and includes courses such as Proseminar in Human Development & Social Policy and Quantitative Methods III: Empirical Tools for Causal Quantitative Analysis. Applications are due in December for a fall start date, and interview invitations are sent in January. Applications should include an application fee, a statement of purpose, a resume, a writing sample, transcripts from all postsecondary institutions, GRE scores, and English proficiency scores for non-native English speakers. Graduates of Northwestern have assumed roles as teachers and researchers at colleges and universities, as well as policy analysts for government or research organizations. Northwestern also offers a PhD in Learning Sciences and one in Computer Science and Learning Sciences (CS+LS), as well as several master’s degrees in education.

Stanford University

The Graduate School of Education (GSE) at Stanford University offers a unique Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Social Sciences, Humanities, and Interdisciplinary Policy Studies in Education (SHIPS). The SHIPS approach includes two distinctive, but complementary approaches: to develop students’ skills in a disciplinary tradition and to develop skills in a major issue in education. Students can choose a program in one of the seven Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) disciplinary traditions (anthropology; economics; history; linguistics; organizational studies; philosophy; and sociology); a program in one of the four Issue Domains in Education (IDE) areas (educational policy; higher education; international comparative education (ICE); and race, inequality, and language in education (RILE)); or a dual specialization program studying one HSS discipline and one IDE area. The dual specialization program takes full advantage of the SHIPS model and does not take more time or total units than a single program. The Stanford PhD program requires students to commit to four to five years of full-time study, but can take less for students who have a related master’s degree. Students who do not have a relevant master’s degree must earn a doctoral minor related to their program. The PhD culminates in a dissertation project, which is proposed during the fourth year of study. Stanford offers student fellowships and assistantships to graduate students in addition to loans and scholarships. In addition to the SHIPS program, the Stanford GSE offers several other graduate programs in education.

Online and Hybrid Programs

Michigan state university.

Michigan State University’s (MSU) College of Education offers a PhD in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology (EPET) that can be taken in an on-campus mode or hybrid mode depending on the student’s needs. Students attending the program on campus will need to pursue the degree full time by completing three courses each semester in addition to working 20 hours each week in a paid assistantship program; in this mode, the degree can be completed in four years or more. The hybrid mode is built for students who are working full time and can only attend school part time; these students will typically complete four courses each year and finish their degree in five or more years of mostly online learning. One semester of face-to-face learning is offered to those students who are able to take leave from their jobs, and graduate assistantships may be available during that semester to help with the cost of attending class on campus. Two areas of emphasis are offered in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology; an additional specialization in Language and Literacy Education is offered for the Educational Psychology emphasis, as well as an optional Urban Education Graduate Certificate. Graduates of the program have worked as teachers and researchers in a university setting and as leaders in school systems or the private sector. Several master’s degrees are offered at MSU in education, many of which are in an online format.

Colorado State University

Colorado State University (CSU) offers an online Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Education and Human Resource Studies: Higher Education Leadership Specialization designed for students who are employed full time. The learning experience is marked by two video conferences per week plus two face-to-face meetings on campus per year, one in January and one in July. Only 10-12 students are admitted to each cohort, a group of professional peers who stay together throughout the duration of the program. To be admitted, applicants must have two years of experience in higher education and a regionally accredited master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA. GRE scores are not required. Rather than exams, students submit papers as the predominant form of assessment. Coursework includes Higher Education Finance, Student Development in a Collegiate Context, Analyzing Education Literature, Simulated Presidential Cabinet I, and a final dissertation. Graduates of the program can advance their careers in higher education in positions in administration, student services, and academic support leadership. CSU also offers a hybrid PhD in Organizational Learning, Performance, and Change (OLPC), as well as several online and hybrid master’s programs in education.

University of Kentucky

At the University of Kentucky’s (UK) School of Educational Leadership Studies, students can get an online PhD in Educational Leadership. The PhD at UK focuses on scholarly research and graduates seek roles as faculty, research scientists, or other professional educational roles. In a rare 100% online format, students at UK will complete 42 credit hours of coursework plus four credit hours in a residency for a total of 46 credit hours, taking an average of five to six years to complete, though it is possible to complete the program in as little as four years. The program has a cohort format in which a new group of students is admitted each fall, with applications due by January. Coursework focuses on a Leadership Core (with courses such as Leadership in Educational Organizations I and Politics of Educational Leadership) and a Research Method Core (with courses such as Research Design & Analysis in Education and Field Studies in Educational Settings. In addition to taking 15 hours in each of these two areas, students take 12 hours of elective courses. A handful of courses are held in a live, synchronous format via Zoom sessions on five or six Saturdays each term, but other courses are taught in the evening during the week, allowing students to work during the day. The PhD in Educational Leadership culminates in a dissertation, qualifying exam, and dissertation residency. To be admitted, candidates should have an accredited master’s degree with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and GRE scores in the top 49th percentile. They should also have completed a basic graduate-level course in statistics with a grade of B or higher.

Question : What is the difference between a PhD and a Doctor of Education?

Answer : While there are some similarities between these two terminal degrees in education, there are also distinct differences. In general, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education tends to focus on research, theory, and preparing graduates for roles as college professors and researchers. The EdD tends to focus more on the application of research to solve educational problems and preparing graduates for roles in educational leadership and administration. PhDs typically (but not always) require students to attend full time, while EdDs are often designed for working students. Still, PhDs tend to take longer to complete (commonly four to six years as opposed to three years for an EdD).

Answer : A PhD in Education can prepare graduates for many types of careers. Many graduates of PhD programs enter teaching and research roles at the postsecondary level at colleges and universities. Answer : A PhD in Curriculum and Instruction prepares graduates to become teacher educators as well as researchers, policymakers, and administrators. Sometimes PhDs in Curriculum and Instruction offer specialization options, further narrowing the scope of study and career possibilities. Specializations may include Early Childhood Education or a teachable subject area such as science or mathematics.

Question : What is a dissertation?

Answer : Most PhD in Education programs culminate with the writing and defense of a dissertation, which is an in-depth research project in which students study and develop an original concept related to their degree, and then present it to faculty who ask questions while the students “defend” their work. Even if you are attending an online or hybrid program, certain aspects of the dissertation may have to be completed in person, but you should check with the schools of your choice for more information.

Answer : In the United States, many colleges and universities offer academic tenure, which is a permanent job contract, for faculty positions under certain circumstances. Tenure is appointed by the college or university administration (usually via a tenure committee) to instructors who meet a set of guidelines set by the school. Tenured faculty positions are typically coveted because these instructors can only be terminated under exceptional circumstances such as the discontinuation of the program or high financial demand.

Answer : Tenure requirements depend on the college or university and may be somewhat subjective. Professors who are hired on a tenure track are typically called assistant professors and it may take six or seven years (or more) to earn tenure. When considering assistant professors for tenure, the tenure committee typically reviews their research contributions, published work, ability to secure grant funding, and teaching effectiveness in the classroom.

Degrees and GPA Requirements

Bachelors degree: All graduate applicants must hold an earned baccalaureate from a regionally accredited college or university or the recognized equivalent from an international institution.

Masters degree: This program requires a masters degree as well as the baccalaureate.

University GPA requirement: The minimum grade point average for admission consideration for graduate study at the University of Denver must meet one of the following criteria:

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the baccalaureate degree.

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits (approximately two years of work) for the baccalaureate degree.

An earned master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution or the recognized equivalent from an international institution supersedes the minimum GPA requirement for the baccalaureate.

A cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all graduate coursework completed for applicants who have not earned a master’s degree or higher.

Official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), C1 Advanced or Duolingo English Test are required of all graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship status, whose native language is not English or who have been educated in countries where English is not the native language. Your TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test scores are valid for two years from the test date.

The minimum TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test score requirements for this degree program are:

Minimum TOEFL Score (Internet-based test): 80

Minimum IELTS Score: 6.5

Minimum C1 Advanced Score: 176

Minimum Duolingo English Test Score: 115

Other Required Materials

We require a scanned copy of your transcripts from every college or university you have attended. Scanned copies must be clearly legible and sized to print on standard 8½-by-11-inch paper. Transcripts that do not show degrees awarded must also be accompanied by a scanned copy of the diploma or degree certificate. If your academic transcripts were issued in a language other than English, both the original documents and certified English translations are required.

Transcripts and proof of degree documents for postsecondary degrees earned from institutions outside of the United States will be released to a third-party international credential evaluator to assess U.S. education system equivalencies. Beginning July 2023, a non-refundable fee for this service will be required before the application is processed.

Upon admission to the University of Denver, official transcripts will be required from each institution attended.

Three (3) letters of recommendation are required.  Letters should be submitted by recommenders through the online application.

Top 5 universities in the UK

5.  university of edinburgh.

Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is the sixth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Britain and Ireland’s seven ancient universities.

It is made up of three colleges: arts, humanities and social sciences; science and engineering; and medicine and veterinary medicine. Within these colleges are 20 academic schools.

A range of student clubs and societies is on offer, including a music society, a theatre society and a variety of sports teams including football, rowing, judo and rugby.

The student newspaper, The Student , is one of the oldest student newspapers in the UK. It was founded by the author Robert Louis Stevenson.

UCL’s main campus is in the central London area of Bloomsbury. Nearly half of all UCL students are from outside the UK, with significantly more from Asia than from continental Europe.

UCL was the first university in England to admit students irrespective of class, race or religion, and the first to admit women on equal terms with men, following the educational philosophy of Jeremy Bentham, the university’s “spiritual founder”.

For admission, undergraduate students are required to have achieved top grades in their high school exams. The most competitive degree is the BSc in philosophy, politics and economics, which receives 30 applicants for every place.

Famous alumni include Mahatma Gandhi; Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone; and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who met the other members of his band at the university.

3. Imperial College London

Imperial’s main campus is near Kensington Palace in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, with other campuses around the city. The student cohort is extremely international and is made up of more than 125 nationalities.

Imperial College London is consistently ranked among the best universities in the world for science, technology, engineering, medicine and business.

It was formed in 1907 from a merger of three colleges in London and now has 17,000 students and 8,000 staff.

In addition to top scientists, Fields medallists and Nobel prizewinners, Imperial also produces influential government advisers and policymakers. Many graduates go on to achieve breakthrough innovations in industry and business, and are highly sought after by blue-chip companies and start-ups.

The author H. G. Wells and Sir Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin, are among Imperial’s famous alumni.

2. University of Cambridge

In total, 117 Nobel laureates are affiliated with the University of Cambridge , and Cambridge-linked mathematicians have won 11 Fields medals. Notable alumni include actors, athletes, politicians, royals and cultural figures, including biologist Charles Darwin, broadcaster David Attenborough, conservationist Jane Goodall and actress Olivia Colman.

Like Oxford, the University of Cambridge is fundamentally collegiate and is also one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities. The town is just an hour from London.

The university is home to more than 19,000 students and 9,000 staff. There are 31 colleges, some of which date back to the 13th century, and more than 100 academic departments.

Cambridge is particularly renowned for excellence in mathematics and has educated some of the most famous British scientists.

Undergraduates are taught via lectures and supervisions – intimate tutorials with only a couple of other students at most. The workload is heavy but terms are shorter than at many other UK universities.

Cambridge libraries are home to extensive collections of medieval manuscripts, and the university museums display collections of archaeological artefacts and zoological specimens.

Oxbridge and the Ivy League: tips for applications

1. University of Oxford

More than 30 world leaders, 27 British prime ministers, 50 Nobelists and 120 Olympic medallists were educated at Oxford. Stephen Hawking, Hugh Grant and Indira Gandhi are some of its famous graduates.

Undergraduates and postgraduates belong to one of its 44 colleges and often live in the college building or college-owned accommodation.

One of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities, the University of Oxford attracts top scholars and students. Entry standards are high and admission is competitive; on average, the institution receives five applications for each available place.

Social life and recreational activities – such as rowing, cultural events and societies – also revolve around the college. Undergraduates are taught almost exclusively by tutors in their college, while postgraduate students are primarily served academically by a centralised faculty.

There are more than 100 libraries at Oxford, the most famous of which is the Bodleian, built in 1602. The city also has a number of museums, including the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, which houses the remains of a dodo, and the Museum of the History of Science, which displays a blackboard used by Albert Einstein.

Associate of Arts in Early Childhood Development and Education

The Associate of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Development and Education is your first step in building a foundation for success in a career in childcare by preparing you to work with children and families in a variety of settings. Our completely online program is designed to meet the needs of diverse students. This degree leads to Associate Licensure in Pre-Kindergarten Education (in Ohio*). Graduates are qualified to teach in licensed childcare and preschool programs, and are eligible for associate pre-kindergarten teacher licensure after passing the OAE (Ohio Assessments for Educators) Pre-Kindergarten I and Pre-Kindergarten II tests. Also, interested students can apply ALL of the coursework toward a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Science.

For our military-affiliated learners:

Ohio State is dedicated to supporting our military community. Registered Virtual Lab School users who have completed all 15 foundational courses within the Infant Toddler, Preschool, or School-Age track, can use 13 credit hours from the Virtual Lab School towards the online degree in early childhood education, as well as any scholarships or aid available from the U.S. Department of Defense or Ohio State’s military affairs to assist in covering the cost of tuition.

The Associate of Arts, Early Childhood Education program is approved in Ohio and prepares students to teach in childcare, pre-schools, and pre-K programs within a school district. Should a student wish to teach in a school district’s pre-K program outside of Ohio, additional curriculum may be required to meet the requirements defined by the state educator licensing board. Students interested in obtaining a pre-K school district position should contact the state educator licensing board prior to enrolling in the program to confirm requirements.

Graduates of the Associate of Early Childhood Education and Development program will be equipped to identify typical and atypical child development and apply the latest research on physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development to early childhood education.

ESEPSY 2309 – Psychological Perspectives on Education

This course deals with the major theories of human development, motivation and learning. Planning of instruction, teaching strategies, assessment and classroom management are examined. Authentic pedagogical practices are used to gain an understanding of the teaching and learning process. 

ESSPED 2650 – Introduction to Young Children with Exceptionalities

Intro to Young Children with Exceptionalities is an overview of the education and early care of exceptional learners from birth to the early grades. This course will focus on young children whose attributes/learning abilities differ from the norm to such an extent that an individual family service plan (IFSP) or an individualized program of special education (IEP) is required to meet their needs. 

HDFS 2200 – Family Development (Virtual Lab School Equivalent)

Dynamics of family interaction over the life cycle; emphasis on developmental, social, and cultural influences on the family experience. 

HDFS 2410 – Child Development (Virtual Lab School Equivalent)

Study of the nature, nurture, and development of children from conception through the childhood years. 

HDFS 3300 – Promoting Early Language & Literacy Development in ECDE

This ECDE course focuses on theories of language development, the sequence of speech and language development and differentiating between normal and atypical speech. Emphasis will also be placed on the teacher’s role in facilitating communication and literacy skills, on planning and implementing appropriate language and literacy activities, and on selecting & using literature to enhance language. 

HDFS 3310 – Developing Age Appropriate Curriculum for ECDE

This course is an overview of care giving for infants and toddlers in group settings. Developmentally appropriate programming for infants and toddlers is emphasized across developmental areas through routines, environment, and experiences with a focus on language and brain development. The role of staff and parent relationships is explored as is state rules for licensed child care centers. 

EDUTL 2820 – Creativity and the Creative Arts in ECDE

This course introduces students to basic definitions, theories, and practical examples of using creativity, imagination, and the arts as means for educating young children within and outside of traditional early childhood educational settings. 

HDFS 3189.01 – Field Work with Targeted Populations: Children (Virtual Lab School Equivalent)

Field Work for students who are interested in working with children. 

HDFS 3450 – Positive Guidance of Young Children in Group Contexts (Virtual Lab School Equivalent)

Examines strategies to help promote adaptive behavior in home, school, and community contexts. Students will learn strategies for managing and preventing behavioral problems and develop an understanding of behavior management practices. 

HDFS 3800 – Professional Development (Virtual Lab School Equivalent)

The professional: performance, role in society, position securement, involvement in organizations, and continuing development. Students are encouraged to take this course early in the major. 

KNSFHP 1103 – Introduction to Health and Wellness in American Society (Virtual Lab School Equivalent)

A study of student health problems; designed to foster understandings and attitudes needed for intelligent decision-making related to present and future health needs.

Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Science, The Ohio State University (2014) MS in Human Ecology, The Ohio State University (2014) BS in Psychology, The Ohio State University (2001) I am fascinated by young children and particularly interested in the way key relationships in young children’s lives impact their social-emotional development. As a former infant-toddler and preschool educator, I had an opportunity to develop a broad perspective on the myriad of relationships within which children and families function. My published research thus far has taken a family systems perspective, focusing on how individual characteristics of new parents may interact to influence each other’s parenting, and how particular parenting practices may predict children’s social-emotional development. For my dissertation work, I am investigating the relationships between early childhood teachers and families, applying theoretical models of coparenting to the childcare setting. In particular, I am studying how teachers and families understand their relationships with each other, what factors are associated with how these relationships function, as well as how these relationships are associated with family involvement and child social-emotional functioning.
