Ph.D. Program

GRADUATE COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of 96 hours (including a 32 hour master's degree), divided into 3 stages, is required. The master's degree or its equivalent constitutes Stage 1. Stage 2 ends when all departmental course and credit requirements are fulfilled and the preliminary examination is passed. Stage 3 is devoted to the dissertation (the dissertation prospectus, the dissertation proper, and the final examination on the dissertation).
  • At least 64 hours, including thesis credit, must be in courses meeting on the Urbana- Champaign campus or in other locations approved for residence credit for the Ph.D. In absentia registration for thesis credit requires approval of the Graduate College.
  • The subject of the dissertation must be reported to the Graduate College at the time of the preliminary examination.
  • The dissertation must comply with the requirements set forth in  Instructions for the Preparation of Thesis issued by the Graduate College.
  • The time limit for the doctorate is seven years from first registration in the Graduate College. Those who begin doctoral work here with a master's degree from another university have a six year limit. Students who have reached or exceeded the time limit for the degree may not continue to register without permission from the Dean of the Graduate College. Such permission can be granted only upon the recommendation of an executive officer of the department showing tangible progress toward the degree and a reasonable completion date.
  • Students who have completed the 96 hour credit requirement, have passed the preliminary examination, are making no use of University facilities, and have left campus, are not required to maintain registration. Students must be registered, however, during the term in which they take their final examinations (i.e., oral defense of the dissertation). In that term, students who have completed the 96 hour requirement may enroll in CMN 599 for zero hours.
  • If more than five years elapse between preliminary examinations and the final examination, students are required to pass a second preliminary examination as a prerequisite to admission to a final examination. The form of the second preliminary examination need not be identical to that of the first.

DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND INFORMATION

In stages 2 and 3 (after completion of a master's degree) the student must satisfactorily complete:

  • A minimum of 40 hours of coursework (not including hours counted toward the methods requirement)
  • The research methods requirement
  • The Preliminary Examination
  • The Dissertation

The details of these requirements are as follows.

COURSEWORK:  A minimum of 40 hours of coursework is required (not including hours counted toward the research methods requirement), and at least half of these must be in the department. Not more than eight hours of independent study can be counted toward the 40 hours of coursework; however, special topic courses using an independent study number (e.g., CMN 595) do not come under this limitation if they meet as regular courses or seminars.

Though no specific courses are mandated, every doctoral student is expected to have had exposure (either through Ph.D. coursework or previous courses) to both social-scientific and humanistic facets of the study of communication. Just what coursework this might involve is left to the student's program planning committee.

Each student is expected to develop a major and a minor area of specialization. Given the diversity of specializations, an exhaustive list of alternatives is not possible. In general, each student should design areas of specialization in ways that look toward continued growth and development in a professional career. In the process of constructing areas of specialization, each student should work closely with the advisor and program planning committee.

At least 12 hours of credit must be earned in classes outside the department. These classes may be from more than one department. (Classes taken to fulfill the coursework requirement and classes taken fulfill the research methods requirement can satisfy this outside-credit requirement.)

RESEARCH METHODS:  All candidates must demonstrate proficiency in research methods that are appropriate to their research interests. Because the central requirement is methodological competence, there can be no simple general formula for assessing proficiency. But ordinarily proficiency is demonstrated by successful completion of a program of relevant courses in methods that is determined by the student's program planning committee; this program might include work in quantitative, qualitative, historical, or critical methods. In all cases the candidate will be required to have taken a minimum of two such courses, though the normal practice is to require work beyond this minimum.

Proficiency in a foreign language may constitute a part of the methodological preparation if it is relevant to the candidate's specialized research interest (e.g., the dissertation). Satisfactory reading proficiency in a foreign language has usually been treated as scoring 485 or above on the Educational Testing Service French and Spanish tests and 470 or above on the German test, or passing a 2-semester 500 level course in the chosen language with a grade of A or B, or securing written certification from a professor of the chosen language that the candidate reads and understands it. Language credit secured elsewhere is generally not transferable except that ETS scores less than two years old may be accepted.

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION:  The examination is administered by the student's preliminary examination committee consisting of at least four faculty members (i.e., the advisor plus three others), all of whom must be members of the Graduate Faculty. At least two of the members must be tenured and at least half of the committee must be departmental faculty. Ordinarily, there will be substantial overlap between the composition of a student's program planning committee and the composition of the preliminary examination committee, but the two committees need not be identical.   Students must be enrolled for the entire academic term in which the preliminary exam occurs.

During the student's last semester of course work, the student must enroll in at least four hours of CMN 595, an independent study devoted to the preliminary examination. These hours of CMN 595 will not count as either coursework hours or methods hours; they will not count against the limitation on hours of independent study. Enrollment in this preliminary examination 595 requires permission of the student's preliminary examination committee. Permission is sought by submitting, no later than the mid-point of the semester preceding the desired 595 enrollment, a preliminary version of a dissertation prospectus. Based on the preliminary prospectus, the student's preliminary examination committee will approve enrollment in 595, disapprove enrollment in 595, or request that the preliminary prospectus be revised and resubmitted for evaluation.

When approval to enroll in 595 is granted, the preliminary examination committee will formulate the written portion of the preliminary examination. The written portion of the preliminary examination has three parts:

  • The purpose of the  general examination  is to assess the student's engagement of broader issues that transcend the student's particular specialization.
  • The purpose of the  specialty examination  is to assess the student's mastery of work in the student's specialty area(s), including specifically the student's understanding of material directly relevant to the student's dissertation work.
  • The purpose of the  methods examination  is to assess the student's grasp of relevant research methods and practices, including specifically the student's mastery of the methods relevant to the student's dissertation.

The implementation of each part of the written examination is left to the discretion of individual preliminary examination committees. The specifics of the format are less important than that the three areas of the written preliminary examination be addressed in a manner that suits the purposes of the examination.

When a preliminary examination committee grants permission for a student to enroll in the preliminary examination 595, the advisor should compile a document containing the preliminary examination questions and timetable for preliminary examination completion and 595 enrollment. That document should be shared with the student and the committee.

Upon completion of the written work in the preliminary examination 595, the student (with approval of the advisor) should schedule an oral examination.  Before this oral part of the preliminary examination can be held,  the Graduate College must appoint a preliminary examination committee.

The request to appoint a committee and therefore schedule an oral examination must be made with the Graduate College at least three weeks before the exam date. To schedule the exam, the student (with approval of the advisor) must contact the Department of Communication graduate program office to request that the Graduate College appoint a final examination committee and, in making the request, specify a date for the examination. The student should ask the department to make this request no less than three weeks before the desired examination date. When the Graduate College has appointed an official final examination committee, the department will receive notification, including a form on which the examining committee's evaluation is to be returned. The committee is forwarded the notification and the form is to be picked up the department's graduate program office prior to the exam.

The oral examination concerns the student's 595 work and any other matters the committee may deem appropriate. The scheduling of the oral examination, its location, and the like are at the discretion of the committee. It is common practice that  committee members   be given at least two weeks to read the answers to the examination  before the oral examination meeting; faculty who do not receive exam responses with sufficient time to read them may request that the meeting be rescheduled.  The committee chair, student, and at least one additional voting member of the committee must be physically present for the entire duration of all oral components of the preliminary exam. All voting members of the committee must be present in person or participate via teleconference or other electronic communication media during the examination, deliberation, and results determination.

Upon completion of the oral examination, the preliminary examination committee (a) submits a grade for the work in 595 and (b) submits an evaluation of the preliminary examination to the Graduate College. The examining committee's evaluation may take one of three forms: Pass, Fail, or Continuation. If the result is Pass, the student moves on to the next stage of doctoral work (the dissertation prospectus and then the dissertation itself). If the examination is judged to be a failure, the student is dropped from candidacy for an advanced degree. If the committee wishes to continue the examination, the committee will determine the appropriate course(s) of action; this may involve the student's rewriting some questions, taking additional class work and then rewriting, producing a paper on some specified topic, etc. At some point, of course, the committee must reach a judgment of Pass or Fail.

The result of the examination is reported on the Graduate College form sent to the department when the preliminary examination committee is appointed. The advisor should give the completed form to the Director of Graduate Studies who will retain a copy in the student's file and return the original of the completed form to the Graduate College.

Upon completion of the work in the preliminary examination 595, the student should be in a position to submit promptly a revised final dissertation prospectus. Indeed, where appropriate, the oral preliminary examination may be expanded to include consideration of the student's revised final dissertation prospectus.

DISSERTATION  Completion of a suitable dissertation is the final stage of the doctoral program. The following summarizes the required steps in completing the dissertation.

Committee:  The dissertation committee must be composed of four or more faculty members. At least three must be members of the Graduate Faculty, at least two must be tenured, and at least half of the committee members must be departmental faculty. Usually the composition of the dissertation committee will substantially overlap with that of the program planning committee and the preliminary examination committee, but these need not be identical. Usually one's advisor will be one's dissertation director, but technically these are different roles that different persons might fill.

Prospectus:  A dissertation prospectus must be approved by one's dissertation committee. Prospectus approval requires submission of a complete, written prospectus. Exactly what form the prospectus takes (its length, its detail, the matters covered, and so forth) is at the discretion of the committee. Advisors must complete the Committee-Approved Dissertation Prospectus form and submit it with the approved prospectus to the Director of Graduate Studies. Students should not assume that their dissertation project has been approved until a signed prospectus has been filed.

Defense:  The following steps should be completed before the final examination over the dissertation.

1.  At least three weeks prior  to the expected date of the defense, the student (with approval of the advisor) must contact the Department of Communication graduate program office to request that the Graduate College appoint a final examination committee and, in making the request, specify a date for the examination. When the Graduate College has appointed an official final examination committee, the department will receive notification, including a form on which the examining committee's evaluation is to be returned. The committee is forwarded the notification and the form is to be picked up the department's graduate program office prior to the exam.

2. Committee members  must be given at least two weeks to read the dissertation  before the oral examination meeting; faculty who do not receive the dissertation with sufficient time to read it may request that the meeting be rescheduled. 3. The committee chair, student, and at least one additional voting member of the committee must be physically present for the entire duration of all oral components of the defense/final exam. All voting members of the committee must be present in person or participate via teleconference or other electronic communication media during the examination, deliberation, and results determination.

Format and Deposit:  After the final examining committee has approved the dissertation--including approval of all final revisions--the dissertation should be ready for format checks. Format checking is based on a complete, presumably perfect, copy of the approved dissertation. In preparation of final copy, the candidate should follow exactly the most recent format requirements available from the Graduate College Thesis Office . There are three steps to a format check:

1. The  advisor  must check the dissertation for form, content, freedom from errors in typography, layout, citations, reference lists, and Graduate College specifications.  The advisor must notify the Director of Graduate Studies in print or by electronic mail that s/he is satisfied that the dissertation meets appropriate standards of scholarship and presentation.

2. The department's graduate program office checks the entire dissertation to ensure that it meets the department's standards and to spot any potential problems in relation to the Graduate College specifications. Upon a satisfactory examination of the dissertation or, if necessary, after required corrections have been made, the department's graduate program office will submit a scanned copy of the Thesis/Dissertation Approval Form to the Graduate College .

Although we makes every effort to complete a format check within two weeks after receiving a dissertation, more time may be needed, especially in the weeks before deposit deadlines when several dissertations are being processed. Moreover, if a dissertation requires a great many corrections and revisions in light of the format check, the candidate must attend to them before the department will certify the dissertation ready for deposit. Candidates should allow plenty of time before the deadline for deposit of dissertations. 

THE MECHANICS OF GRADUATING In a bureaucracy such as the University of Illinois, merely completing all degree requirements will not yield a degree. One's papers must be in order. A key to having one's papers in order is having one's name on the official degree list for the desired graduation date. Thus, if you are expecting to receive a degree you should do two things:

1. Arrange to get your name on the appropriate degree list. This must be done with Student  Self-service . 

If you are registering in the term in which you expect to graduate, watch the screens of BANNER for the question: Do you expect to receive a degree at the end of this term? Answer Yes.

2. Tell the Director of Graduate Studies that you are expecting to receive a degree at the given graduation date. (This way, when the preliminary version of the degree list is received by the department, the list will be checked to ensure that your name appears on it.)

If you do not do these things, then no matter what else you have done, you might not graduate, because only those on The Degree List graduate.

One need not be enrolled to graduate. One can graduate in August, for example, without having been enrolled in the summer session. Doctoral candidates must be enrolled in the term in which the final oral examination (the dissertation defense) is held, but they need not be enrolled in the term in which the final copy of the dissertation is deposited.

For each graduation, there is a deadline by which the appropriate examining committee (the comprehensive examination committee for master's students, the final dissertation examination committee for doctoral students) must convey its evaluation to the Director of Graduate Studies. The exact deadlines vary from year to year and are available at the Graduate College web page  here . A student who hopes to make a certain graduation date will need to plan so that the Director of Graduate Studies will be able to certify (by the deadline) that all degree requirements have been met.

The PhD in Strategic Communication offers advanced instruction in health communication, instructional emergency risk communication, and crisis communication; it prepares students with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue a successful, advanced career in communication and related fields in both academic and applied settings.

Strategic communication, one of the fastest-growing areas situated within the broader field of communication, is an innovative and unique subfield. It is distinct from other communication subfields in that it is intentionally goal-driven communication wherein communication scholars work in partnership with professionals in the public and private sectors to solve real-world problems.

The Strategic Communication PhD requires a minimum of 60 credit hours beyond the master's degree. The zero-hour Doctoral Colloquium will be required in the fall semesters of the first year. The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has four areas of study: Accounting and Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.

The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research

The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

Communication studies at Purdue University celebrate a long and distinguished history, having offered graduate degrees since 1947. Our campus-based M.A. and Ph.D. programs focus on five areas: organizational communication; interpersonal communication; public relations; health communication; and media, technology and society. Our fully online M.S. program focuses on strategic communication for industry professionals.

Master’s and Ph.D. Programs (Campus-based)  

Masters of Communication. Students can earn either an MA or an MS in Communication from the Brian Lamb School of Communication. Students have an option to choose a thesis track or a non-thesis track. The program is designed to be flexible and students can tailor the program to meet their individual interests. Our graduate program is organized along five instructional units:

Ph.D. in Communication . The Brian Lamb School of Communication offers a Ph.D. in Communication. The program is designed around these five instructional units:

One of the defining features of the program is its flexibility. Students design their own course work to create a program that is tailored and unique to each individual student. All admitted students in the campus-based program receive funding.

Concentrations (Areas of Study):

Health and Risk Communication: Issues of health have become increasingly critical and complex, generating the need for individuals who can communicate effectively about health. The health communication program at Purdue seeks to fulfill this growing need for trained health communicators by exposing students to the theory, research, and practice.

Interpersonal Communication: Scholarship in interpersonal communication focuses on the study of fundamental processes that occur in all social interactions (interpretation, message production), the codes (verbal and nonverbal) through which everyday interactions are accomplished, and the functions that people pursue in these interactions (persuading, informing, providing support, etc.) We also investigate how communication shapes, and is shaped by, human relationships, including friendships, romances, families, and work relationships.

Media, Technology & Society: Graduate work in Media, Technology, and Society covers research on media and technological processes, their consequences, and the role that mass communication plays in both public and private life. Courses focus on local, national, and global media systems and audiences, as well as emerging information and communication technologies and environments.

Organizational Communication: Organizational communication examines the relationships between communication and organizing through the study of discourse, meanings, symbols, and information flow.

Public Relations: Purdue’s public relations program emphasizes negotiation and maintenance of relationships among organizations and their social, political, and economic environments. The program emphasizes the integration of public relations theory and research into practice to develop an understanding of the interactions between organizations and their publics. The Public Relations unit at Purdue prepares students to cultivate and sustain mutually-beneficial relationships between organizations of all types and their strategic publics both as practitioners and researchers.

Master’s Program (Online/Distance): 

Online MS in Communication: The online MS program in communication, along with the graduate certificate in strategic communication management, is specifically designed for full-time professionals working in the industry. The program focuses on strategic communication concepts, such as public relations, integrated communication, and organizational communication, and helps students develop communication leadership skills necessary for professional success. Students in this program get an education in strategic communication planning, crisis communication, global communication, social media, communication research methods, and related areas. The program is entirely asynchronous, and students typically take courses one at a time in 8-week blocks. The doctoral study programme Strategic Communication Management is an interdisciplinary study, focusing on new strategic managerial values (personal, intercultural, economic, political, cultural, artistic, religious, health-related, scientific, global, regional, national, and local), leadership competences, soft skills and communication.

Over the course of six academic quarters, the PhD programme focuses on theoretical and methodological approaches to the Humanities and a variety of social approaches to the field of communication. Moreover, strategic managerial skills and profound knowledge of communication management lies at the heart of this particular PhD programme.

Nowadays, organisations of all kinds are expected to be both rhetorically and aesthetically convincing, and to formulate strategic visions and goals convincingly. Members are also supposed to be integrated with shared values and symbols of identification – often across physical and cultural distances. The aim is to be able to predict the attitudes and demands of the growing number of shareholders, and then manage the relationship across various media.

In other words, organisations are expected to be able to organise and manage messages to and from a variety of recipients across formal organisational boundaries. As a result, communication has become a strategic management concern that includes leadership and human resources as well as marketing, public relations, and advertising.

Details on the programme schedule

Structured doctorate.

In addition to an individual doctorate, which is still the most frequent form of acquiring a PhD in Germany, the “structured doctorate” has become firmly established in recent years. The “structured” doctorate is distinguished from the “individual doctorate” by some special formal features, but it primarily strengthens the professional and social integration of the doctoral students compared to an individual doctorate. The doctorate programme covers a standard period of 3 years, including completion of the dissertation and completion of the oral doctoral examination. 180 ECTS credits must be earned.

Programme requirements

The following must be completed in the course of doctoral studies:

  • At the end of the first academic year, the candidate has to submit a completed dissertation concept of about 25 pages (6 ECTS) to the examination secretariat. The dissertation concept is assessed as passed or not passed by both supervisors. Exceeding the deadline for submission will result in the loss of admission to the doctorate programme, unless the doctoral candidate is not responsible for exceeding the deadline.
  • In the course of the doctorate programme, doctoral seminars and case studies are to be attended in which oral presentations are to be held

Participation in the curriculum

The choice of programme and admission to a programme usually entails a thematic focus. Doctoral students in a programme therefore not only regularly attend the specialist colloquium of their supervisor, but can also benefit from a generous range of additional courses that are specially tailored to the programme’s goals and the needs of its doctoral students. By participating in courses and workshops, both within the framework of the degree and across programmes, you will benefit from the opportunity to discuss and network.

Supervision

Supervision and mentoring in the programmes is distributed among several persons (at least two, often three) who advise on dissertations in a team. A supervision agreement signed by all supervisors, the doctoral student and the spokesperson of the programme sets minimum standards and formulates the expectations of both parties. Naturally, the aim of these agreements is not to further formalise the doctorate in legal terms, but to increase the binding nature of agreements and advisory meetings and to improve the overall supervision.

Difficulties that repeatedly arise while working on the dissertation and which easily impair progress for weeks can be discussed and solved quickly and simply with other doctoral students. And since there usually is a programme coordinator, you also have a contact person for questions and problems that are not directly related to your dissertation.

Admission requirements

  • Completion of a first professional degree in a subject closely related to the curriculum offered and that corresponds to the acquisition of at least 120 ECTS credits (Diploma / Master's degree or an equivalent domestic or foreign degree).
  • One of the most important admission requirements for the doctorate is the sponsorship of one of the research professors in programme, in which he or she agrees to supervise the candidate’s planned doctoral project. Applicants should therefore familiarise themselves with the research areas of the faculty members and contact potential supervisors before applying for admission. This contact and the preliminary agreement should be indicated in the research project’s description. This precondition is intended to ensure that no doctoral student is left without a supervisor after enrolling in the programme. The commitment is provisional and the supervisors of the thesis may be changed after the start of the programme if all parties involved agree. This is especially the case if the project should be redefined later on.

The Corporate and Public Communication (CPC) major in the Professional Communication Master’s Degree program was designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in dynamic communication roles within both corporate and public sections. This versatile program is available online and on-campus, providing flexibility to accommodate diverse learning preferences. 

The overall purpose of the Corporate and Public Communication major in the Professional Communication degree program is to teach essential skills for graduate students to be successful in communication-based careers. Specifically, the CPC program focuses on training graduate students who are seeking to enhance their knowledge and experience in professional communication and/or gain applied skills for professional growth and career elevation in communication-related positions found in many professional sectors, including corporations, small/large businesses, government organizations, non-profits, and public agencies. 

As an Applied Communication program, the CPC major takes a holistic approach to training graduate students across several areas directly related to communication careers, such as: marketing communication, organizational communication, strategic communication, conflict resolution, crisis communication, public relations, persuasion, and data collection/data analytic methods. Thus, students learn how to use a variety of communication channels, tools, and platforms to connect with clients, colleagues, audiences, and other stakeholders.

Program goals

This terminal Master’s degree was designed for graduate students currently employed in or seeking professional positions. The program emphasizes applied skills preparing students for a variety of communication careers. The goals of the CPC program include: 

  • Preparing students for professional careers within business, government, not-for-profit organizations, or educational institutions
  • Providing students with experience in making formal communication presentations
  • Helping students develop quantitative and qualitative skills in organizational communication contexts and
  • Equipping students with basic knowledge of communication theories with particular emphasis on those that apply to corporate and public affairs, public information, and issue management

By providing a broad understanding of different communication strategies, techniques, and best practices students graduate the program with:

Admission Requirements

All applicants for the Corporate and Public Communication master’s program must meet both university and program requirements.

  • Complete and submit the your graduate application online through the Graduate Application Portal . 
  • Pay a non-refundable application fee of $30. Application packets will not be reviewed until the fee has been paid.
  • Submit a completed Residency Affidavit. All applicants must submit this form, which is completed online.
  • Arrange for an official transcript from each college or university attended to be sent to the Office of Admissions. Transcripts may be sent digitally but must come directly from the institutions attended. An unofficial transcript may be uploaded for the College of Applied Studies for review.

Program Application Requirements

In addition to the university requirements, CPC program applicants must meet the program requirements listed below. FSU and the Corporate and Public Communication program applies a holistic approach to the application review process. Applicants that meet the following requirements will be considered for the program but are not guaranteed admission. Admission decisions will be provided through the FSU application portal or by notification from the graduate program faculty or staff.

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and a GPA (Grade Point Average) of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 system) on all work attempted while registered as an upper-division student working toward a baccalaureate degree.
  • The GRE requirement has been waived for all master’s applicants applying through fall 2026. If students choose during this time to not include GRE scores, it is important to have strong GPAs to be considered for admission.

  • Applicants must arrange for the submission of three letters of recommendation through the FSU application process that speak to your ability to succeed in this graduate program. At least one (1) letter must be from an academic source, one (1) should be from professional or organizational experience, and the final letter can be academic or professional/organizational in nature.
  • Submit/upload a resume or curriculum vitae, which is carefully proofread, professional in nature, and outlines all related academic and professional experiences relevant to this program.
  • This writing sample should be an original, self-authored 5-10 page paper. Topics can vary and the paper will be evaluated for clarity of expression, writing style, use of format, and potential for graduate-level writing. Examples can include a research paper from an undergraduate course (written by the applicant), professional report, executive summary as part of applied experience, project proposals, or other example of writing that applicants feel demonstrate their writing potential for success in graduate school.
  • We prefer this sample to be a sole-authored sample by the applicant, if an applicant wants to submit a co-authored sample, please include a description of your contributions to the sample.

The Corporate and Public Communication Program provides a GRE waiver for applicants that meet requirements. To be considered for a  GRE Waiver  you must complete the form and provide the requested supporting documentation using our online portal.

International students

It is strongly recommended that international candidates submit and complete applications early, at least 3-4 months prior to the deadline because it takes extra time to process international documents. Meeting deadlines early and additional requirements will facilitate the application review process. 

Degree Requirements

Students are required to complete a minimum of thirty-three (33) hours of graduate-level coursework, which includes a capstone final project and a project defense in their last semester. All thirty-three hours must be graduate-level coursework (5000 level and above). Twenty-seven (27) hours must be letter graded. Required coursework includes:

  • Twenty-four (24) hours of core classes that include theory and principles, research methods, and application
  • Six (6 hours) of elective courses 
  • Three (3 hours) capstone course
  • Successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination (0 Credit hours)

Master of Science (MS) in Corporate and Public Communication (fully online or in-person) 

This program requires a minimum of thirty-three (33) hours of graduate-level coursework, which includes a capstone final project and a project defense to be completed during the students' last semester. It is possible to complete the program in as few as two years if some coursework is completed during summer sessions. All courses must be passed with a “B-” grade or better and students are expected to maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout enrollment in the program. The program requires students to take:

This project is comparable in scope to a master’s thesis where students demonstrate the ability to produce work that represents independent and critical thinking while applying concepts and theories toward a professional communication situation. 

  • COM 8966 (0hrs) Comprehensive Exam 

The comprehensive exam test student mastery of program core courses. The exam has both a written and oral portion. Graded S/U.

*Students registered for COM 8966 for zero semester hours while enrolled in additional courses will not be charged for the zero-credit hour course. However , when registering for a zero-credit hour course ONLY , students will be charged for one semester credit hour at the Florida In-State Resident tuition-rate.

Master of Arts (MA) in Corporate and Public Communication (fully online or in-person)

This program requires the same minimum thirty-three (33) hours and grade point average requirements as the Master of Science. However, these students must complete six (6) or more semester hours of graduate credit in humanities courses. They must also demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language, which may be accomplished in any of the following ways: 

  • Certification of proficiency by the appropriate FSU language department 
  • Twelve (12) semester hours in a foreign language in a college or university with an earned average of 3.0 in those courses 
  • Four (4) years of a single language in high school

Combined BS/MS Professional Communication Program

Academically strong students may complete the bachelor’s program in Professional Communication and master’s program in Corporate and Public Communication at an accelerated pace by applying to the combined bachelor’s/master’s program . Courses taken for undergraduate credit do not count toward a graduate degree, unless the courses are in Communication at the 5000 level or above and are taken after being accepted into the BS/MS program. (There is no blanket approval to substitute courses. Any course substitutions must be approved by all members of your committee BEFORE substituting).

Admission Information for Our Corporate Communication Graduate Degree

Admission requirements.

  • A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
  • Unofficial transcripts can be used for acceptance purposes with the submission of a Transcript Request Form .
  • Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

  • Be in your final term and planning to start your master’s degree after the last day of class for your bachelor’s degree.
  • Complete a Bachelor’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
  • Submit an official/unofficial transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show a minimum of 105 completed credit hours.
  • If you are a current Liberty University student completing your undergraduate degree, you will need to submit a Degree/Certificate Completion Application .
  • Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new master’s degree.

Transcript Policies

Unofficial transcripts combined with a Transcript Request Form can be used for admission. Official transcripts are required within 60 days of the admissions decision or before non-attendance drops for the first set of matriculated classes, whichever comes first, and will prevent enrollment into future terms until all official transcripts have been received.

Before sending unofficial college transcripts, please make sure they include the following:

  • Your previous school’s name or logo printed on the document
  • Cumulative GPA
  • A list of completed courses and earned credit broken down by semester
  • Degree and date conferred (if applicable)

Official College Transcript Policy

An acceptable official college transcript is one that has been issued directly from the institution and is in a sealed envelope. If you have one in your possession, it must meet the same requirements. If your previous institution offers electronic official transcript processing, they can send the document directly to [email protected] .

Degrees and GPA Requirements

Bachelors degree: All graduate applicants must hold an earned baccalaureate from a regionally accredited college or university or the recognized equivalent from an international institution.

University GPA requirement: The minimum grade point average for admission consideration for graduate study at the University of Denver must meet one of the following criteria:

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the baccalaureate degree.

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits (approximately two years of work) for the baccalaureate degree.

An earned master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution or the recognized equivalent from an international institution supersedes the minimum GPA requirement for the baccalaureate.

A cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all graduate coursework completed for applicants who have not earned a master’s degree or higher.

Official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), C1 Advanced or Duolingo English Test are required of all graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship status, whose native language is not English or who have been educated in countries where English is not the native language. Your TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test scores are valid for two years from the test date.

The minimum TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test score requirements for this degree program are:

Minimum TOEFL Score (Internet-based test): 80 with minimum of 20 on each subscore

Minimum IELTS Score: 6.5 with minimum of 6.0 on each band score

Minimum C1 Advanced Score: 176

Minimum Duolingo English Test Score: 115 with individual subscore minimum of 105 for Literacy, Comprehension, and Conversation and minimum subscore of 95 for Production.

Required Essays and Statements

We require a scanned copy of your transcripts from every college or university you have attended. Scanned copies must be clearly legible and sized to print on standard 8½-by-11-inch paper. Transcripts that do not show degrees awarded must also be accompanied by a scanned copy of the diploma or degree certificate. If your academic transcripts were issued in a language other than English, both the original documents and certified English translations are required.

Transcripts and proof of degree documents for postsecondary degrees earned from institutions outside of the United States will be released to a third-party international credential evaluator to assess U.S. education system equivalencies. Beginning July 2023, a non-refundable fee for this service will be required before the application is processed.

Upon admission to the University of Denver, official transcripts will be required from each institution attended.

Recommendations are optional and not required as part of admission materials. The admission committee reserves the right to request recommendations when reviewing an admission application.

What Does a Career Look Like After Earning a Master’s Degree in Strategic Communication & Public Relations?

Public relations (PR) is everywhere. From small businesses to celebrities and large corporations, having a PR professional or department is crucial for the success of a business. While the field is constantly evolving, its importance never diminishes.

Sacred Heart University offers a master of arts in strategic communication & public relations (SCPR) program for individuals interested in expanding their PR and communications skills. Foluke Omosun , program director for the SCPR program, explains how earning this degree can advance your career.

What is PR?

PR is the process of building mutually beneficial relationships with an organization’s target audiences, using effective and compelling messages and channels. It’s about adopting an integrative approach to creating cohesive, data-driven content to build meaningful connections that support an organization’s mission and goals. Through SCPR, you seek to shape or enhance a brand’s image and the public’s perception of that brand.

What are some necessary skills to be successful in an SCPR career?

To be successful in the PR industry, you need strong verbal and written communication skills, since the job involves writing, content creation and relationship management with media, influencers, clients, employees, customers and more.

Research, problem solving, strategic thinking and creativity also are crucial skills to have. PR professionals gather and work with data that inform our decisions and actions—whether it’s in crisis communication, social media management or media relations. PR professionals also create campaigns and messaging for traditional and social media that require creative skills and strategic thinking. Additionally, it’s essential to be highly organized and have great time management skills because it involves a lot of multitasking.

Why are these skills important for SCPR professionals to have?

The PR field continues to evolve as new communication channels emerge. However, the foundation for communicating strategically hasn’t changed much. For example, we still need to understand the audience we’re trying to reach with our messaging, what types of content will influence them, what channels of communication they use and how to reach them. Communication skills, research skills, problem solving, strategic thinking and creativity will be necessary for SCPR professionals no matter the changes occurring in the field.

“At SHU, we guide our students to be conscious citizens who communicate ethically on behalf of their clients and to their various audiences,” said Omosun. “Through teamwork and project-based assignments, students learn to apply skills such as conducting research, problem solving, creating strategic campaign plans and content for clients and delivering engaging presentations.”

What is the curriculum of SHU’s SCPR program?

SHU’s program is designed to prepare students for success in the professional PR industry. Students complete 36 credits (12 courses) all designed to provide them with in-depth knowledge and practical skills. Courses include multimedia communications, crisis communications, political communication, social media, advertising, PR, consumer culture and more.

One way we’re adapting is by launching a student-run PR agency in fall 2024 where students will work with community-based nonprofits.

Additionally, SHU’s small class sizes allow for a hands-on approach for personalized coaching by faculty members. Together, students plan and create content for a variety of platforms and blend theory and practice in designing communication campaigns for clients through project-based activities. Each student receives a MacBook laptop with the latest Adobe software, so they have experience using software professionals in the field use. Students get to keep the MacBooks after they graduate.

Purdue’s online data science master’s addresses burgeoning demand for trained data scientists

The interdisciplinary degree is accessible for working professionals from both technical and nontechnical backgrounds

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Data scientists who can make sense of today’s epic floods of data to generate actionable insights and communicate them to a variety of audiences are in demand in almost any field, from retail business and industry to health care, government, education, and more.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that jobs for data scientists will grow 36% by 2031. Nationally, there were nearly 125,000 data scientist jobs added from 2013-2023. Yet many of those jobs — with many more openings coming — went unfilled for a lack of trained data scientists. The bottom line: Nearly every industry today requires data scientists, and the number of these positions is expected to grow.

Purdue University’s new 100% online Master of Science in data science degree addresses the need and the high demand for a trained data science workforce that can harness the power of data to drive innovation, efficiency and competitiveness. The interdisciplinary master’s program is designed for working professionals with a technical background but includes a pathway to entry for professionals from nontechnical fields.

“This data science master’s program is specifically designed for online delivery and optimal online learning, making it accessible to professionals around the world,” said Dimitrios Peroulis, Purdue senior vice president for partnerships and online. “The interdisciplinary curriculum is diverse, customizable to a student’s needs and tailored for practical application immediately.”

Purdue’s online master’s in data science features core courses covering foundations of data science, machine learning and data mining, big data technologies and tools, data analysis, and data visualization and communication.

Students do a capstone project pairing them with an industry mentor and a collaborative team to manage a data science project from inception to completion. That includes developing project timelines, allocating resources and adapting strategies based on the project’s evolution. The capstone, modeled after curriculum from The Data Mine , Purdue’s award-winning data science learning community, is an opportunity to apply knowledge acquired throughout the master’s program to solve complex, real-world problems.

The online master’s program also features the opportunity to earn industry-aligned certificates along the way to earning a master’s degree. Options include education, leadership, and policy; smart mobility and smart transportation; data science in finance; spatial data science; geospatial information science; managing information technology projects; IT business analysis; and applied statistics.

The program was developed by an interdisciplinary cohort of expert faculty from Purdue’s flagship campus, including the colleges of Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Health and Human Sciences, Liberal Arts, Pharmacy, Science, and Veterinary Medicine, along with the Mitch Daniels School of Business, the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, the Purdue Libraries, and the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars.

“Purdue’s new online MS in data science program leverages the real-world experience of faculty working across several distinct disciplines,” said Timothy Keaton, assistant professor of practice in Purdue’s Department of Statistics, who was involved in developing the new degree. “This cooperation between experts in the application of data science in diverse fields provides a great opportunity to create engaging and meaningful coursework that incorporates many different potential areas of interest for our students.”

Students will develop expertise in programming languages, gaining the ability to design and implement data-driven solutions; learn to apply advanced technologies, including cloud computing and big data frameworks, to effectively handle and process large-scale datasets; gain a deep understanding of machine learning algorithms and models, applying them to real-world scenarios; and become proficient in collecting, cleaning, and analyzing diverse datasets.

The curriculum also is designed to teach learners data visualization and communication methods for creating compelling visual representations of complex data to effectively convey insights, along with the application of storytelling techniques to communicate findings clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences. The program covers adherence to ethical standards in data science, privacy, transparency and fairness as well.

The program draws on Purdue’s expertise in myriad aspects of data science. Known for its emphasis on practical programs with proven value, Purdue has been rated among the Top 10 Most Innovative Schools for six years running by U.S. News & World Report and is the No. 8 public university in the U.S. according to the latest QS World University Rankings.
