PhD Program

When preparing for their doctoral research, PhD students are required to attend all of the courses and activities included in the programme of the Paris-Dauphine Doctoral School of Management.  The presence of visiting professors may open up the opportunity of ad hoc training for the students of Edogest.

In 1st year (D1), the PhD programme includes cross-disciplinary elementary courses focusing on the epistemology and methodology of management research. In 2nd year (D2), PhD students are asked to choose a research seminar in connection with their thesis subject, either at Paris-Dauphine University within the framework of existing Research Master’s programmes, or in other universities/institutions. The 3rd year (D3) is devoted to thesis writing.

Objectives of the PhD Programme

Edogest proposes a real PhD programme whose purpose is to:

  • Strengthen support to PhD students and improve their works, as much in terms of quality as of completion time
  • Develop the publications of PhD students during the thesis preparation process.

Content of the PhD Programme

The PhD programme consists of a common-core syllabus (D1), a specialisation seminar (D2), a research work status seminar (D1, D2, D3), as well as an optional writing workshop (D2, D3).

Second-Year Programme (D2)

Optional Seminar (20 hours) Upon the thesis supervisor’s opinion, PhD students are required to choose one among the range of existing Paris-Dauphine 2nd-year Research Master’s seminars (cf. the eight proposed 2nd-year Research Master’s programmes). This seminar must satisfy the PhD students’ specialisation needs in epistemological, methodological, or thematic terms. Examples: Game Theory, Industrial Economics, Social Network Analyses, Behavioural Decision Theory, Corporate Finance, Sociology of Innovation, Cross-Cultural Management, Information Systems, etc. These seminars may also be attended in other universities or institutions (EHESS, Insead, Paris X…).

Research Work Status Seminars During their thesis years, PhD students are required to attend these compulsory seminars organised by the research laboratories to which they belong. At least once a year during their course of study, PhD students will be asked to present the progress of their work in front of two professors from their research centre (among whom their thesis supervisor). PhD students may further consult “resource” persons (in Econometrics, Data Analysis, Scales, Qualitative Methods) within the framework of their research work.

Writing workshop (optional) This non-compulsory seminar is open to all PhD students and teachers/researchers of “Dauphine Recherche en Management” and Edogest who wish to progress in the publication of contributions in peer-reviewed journals (cf. next page/“writing workshops”).

Modes of Assessment

The PhD students’ regular attendance at each seminar is controlled and assessed on a “pass or fail” basis. Students will obtain their PhD provided they have attended all compulsory doctoral seminars. Schedule: 1.    As regards the common-core syllabus (D1), three weeks are successively reserved in January, March and May, during the first year of thesis work, with the possible intervention of English-speaking visiting professors. The optional seminar (D2) follows the schedule of the various Research Master’s programmes concerned.   2.   Research work status seminars (D1, D2, D3) are organised by each research centre.

Training program overview

A research training program for managers experienced in business.

The Executive PhD from Université Paris Dauphine – PSL, which is delivered in English and French, is a doctoral level executive program that provides training in applied research.

This training program for senior, experienced executives – who will be supported by an Executive PhD thesis supervisor – offers a unique opportunity to combine research training with practical application. The program has been designed so that executives can complete their studies in parallel with their professional career.

Our Executive PhD offers a wealth of opportunities for international participants on the program to share their experiences, with a wide variety of topics covered by the more than 100 theses that have been defended since the program was established.

Through writing an Executive PhD thesis, students will develop high-level capabilities, enabling them to translate a management problem related to areas such as Strategy, Management, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing and Information Systems, into a research problem.

They will explore and harness existing knowledge in the field of Organizational Sciences (Management, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, and so on), and they will design and implement an empirical study that will ultimately enable them to develop an original model for understanding and resolving that problem. The skills acquired through researching and writing the Executive PhD thesis are ones that students can apply to a wide range of situations.

The bachelor’s degree at Paris Dauphine is a three-year program. The first two years provide a general background in Law, Economics, Management and Social Sciences. In their third year, students are asked to select one major.  The Management major is oriented towards corporate and organization management. Students learn the basic skills in the most important management areas: accounting, process management, corporate finance, marketing, human resource management, etc. The Finance Department provides a few courses in this major.

After their bachelor studies, students usually complete their specialization by entering a master program (M1). Students coming from Dauphine are required to complete successfully the course “Corporate Finance”, and one course between “Financial mathematics” and “Statistics applied to management”, in order to qualify for admission to the M1 Finance.
