Dissertations and Theses
Graduate academic degrees frequently require the completion of a large, often book length, research paper. This paper is called a thesis (when written for a master's degree) or a dissertation (for a PhD). It usually involves extensive research and is geared toward an academic audience. A committee of faculty members oversees the research and writing of the paper and the graduate student must follow proper research methodology. The faculty committee must give their formal approval of the work before the student may receive their degree. As a result of all this, theses and dissertations are considered to be scholarly works and a really valuable resource when you're working on your own papers, especially since they tend to be original research focusing on areas of current interest in the discipline.
Theses and dissertations written by TU students are readily available from McFarlin Library. (See the box at the bottom of the page.) Dissertations written by students at other colleges and universities since 1997 may usually be obtained online using ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global (see the two boxes below this one). If the thesis or dissertation is not available through ProQuest, you may try requesting it through Interlibrary Loan. Some university libraries may not be willing to loan these materials since their copy may be the only one in existence. Contact the Interlibrary Loan Dept. if you have questions or concerns about this.

"ProQuest Dissertations and Theses: Global (PQDTGlobal) is the world's most comprehensive collection of full-text dissertations and theses. As the official digital dissertations archive for the Library of Congress and as the database of record for graduate research, PQDTGlobal includes millions of searchable citations to dissertations and theses from 1861 to the present day together with over a million full-text dissertations that are available for download in PDF format. Over 2.1 million titles are available for purchase as printed copies. The database offers full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and strong retrospective full-text coverage for older graduate works. It also includes PQDT UK & Ireland content." -- ProQuest
Finding TU graduate theses and dissertations
In the past the Library kept two bound copies of each dissertation and thesis written at The University of Tulsa. One is housed in the University Archives. The other copy, with some exceptions, is now located in Temporary Shelving, Intermediate Level North. If you want to see a print copy of a thesis or dissertation, you are welcome to retrieve it from the stacks yourself, or you may fill out and submit the online book request form . However, many TU theses and dissertations have been scanned and made available online through Proquest . There is still an archival bound copy of each available in Special Collections.
If you're looking for information regarding The University of Tulsa Graduate School's policies and requirements, please see Thesis and Dissertation Information on the University portal (requires login with your TUnet ID).

M.S. Petroleum Engineering
The degree of Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering usually requires the completion of an original research thesis in addition to coursework beyond the baccalaureate level.
Thesis Program (standard)
The traditional, research oriented M.S. program with thesis emphasizes advanced study and research experience. To be eligible for research, a student must have identified an appropriate research area and be accepted as an M.S. thesis student by a member of the MPGE faculty.
Non-Thesis Program
This program is designed to meet the professional needs of part-time students and other students whose background and educational goals may be best served by additional instructed study in lieu of the research investigation involved in an M.S. thesis. To pursue this plan-of-study, students must indicate interest in the coursework-emphasis program on the application for admission. After admission, these students are encouraged to identify faculty members who will serve as their academic M.S. program advisers or they may complete the program under the overall guidance of the Graduate Liaison. The non-thesis M.S. program culminates in a comprehensive examination.
Only students pursuing the thesis option are eligible to be appointed to graduate assistantships.
Students wishing to change from the thesis to non-thesis option must petition the MPGE Graduate Liaison. If the petition is approved, no more than 24 hours of credit will be transferred towards the fulfillment of the course requirements in the non-thesis option. Such a transfer cannot take place during a semester.
Curriculum & Degree Requirements
Every M.S. program must meet all the Basic Requirements for the Master's Degree as decided by Graduate College, and each student is responsible for ensuring compliance with these requirements. In addition, the specific MPGE requirements for the appropriate M.S. plan options delineated below must be met.

Follow UT PGETexas Tech NowTexas tech university joins u.s. doe’s $44 million carbon storage project. August 14, 2024 This partnership will help leverage decades of experience to establish an equitable and environmentally responsible technical assistance program. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) has selected Texas Tech University as one of nine university and industry-led projects to split $44.5 million in federal funding to advance commercial-scale carbon capture, transport and storage across the U.S. With an award just over $6.2 million, Texas Tech intends to implement and accelerate the equitable and environmentally responsible deployment of storage-based carbon management projects in the Permian Basin. The team will provide technical and engagement support for stakeholders to develop a framework for the establishment of a carbon management hub, which will utilize carbon capture storage (CCS) and result in net-zero emissions. “It’s a feeling of accomplishment that six years ago, we started looking into nontraditional oil and gas research topics – CCS being one of them – and pushed to develop a team and technology level where we were ready to take on this type of research,” said Marshall Watson , department chair of the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering . “What is even more exciting is this award aligns with our mission to serve the industry and people of West Texas.” Texas Tech has partnered with five universities, two national laboratories, one geological survey, one private company, and a variety of regional stakeholders and local communities. These stakeholders have extensive technical, managerial, regulatory and business expertise specific to carbon transport and storage in the Permian Basin. Watson is the primary investigator (PI) of this project along with his co-PIs, Qingwang (Kevin) Yuan , an assistant professor of petroleum engineering, and Hossein Emadibaladehi , an associate professor of petroleum engineering. They also have teamed with William Keffer, a professor of energy law at Texas Tech School of Law , and Nikki Kantelis , an associate professor of energy commerce and business economics at the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business . “They will be completing the legal and regulatory work alongside us,” Watson explained. “We are excited for this multidisciplinary collaboration.” CCS is already an integral part of the Department of Petroleum Engineering, which has filed two related patents in addition to this award. The department also has added a CCS certificate program that became available to students graduating in May 2024 and expanded into other energy areas such as hydrogen, geothermal, emission detection/mitigation and produced water management. “We, in petroleum engineering, are not against alternative fuels at all,” Watson said. “We’re for producing an abundant amount of energy so we can survive in an environmentally friendly manner.” DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), under the purview of FECM, will manage the Texas Tech project along with the others selected. Developing and Evaluating an Assessment of Preschoolers’ Science and Engineering KnowledgeA major challenge to promoting effective early science and engineering education is the lack of reliable and validated assessments that align with current educational guidelines for science and engineering. Existing early science and engineering assessments either cover a narrow range of concepts and practices and/or are not designed in a way to evaluate and provide information within theorized dimensions of science and engineering knowledge and skills. The goals of this study were to develop a preschool science and engineering assessment and to examine the factor structure of children’s science and engineering knowledge and skills using the newly developed assessment. A 120-item assessment was developed and administered to 186 children (50.28% female) ages 3-to-5 years ( M = 4.62 years, SD = 0.61 years). The overall best fitting structure of the assessment was found to be a three-dimensional model: disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. Items that had low correlations with the overall test, loaded poorly onto their respective factors, or were found to provide overlapping information with other items (i.e., exhibited similar difficulties for the same content areas) were removed, resulting in a final and brief (48-item) version of the assessment. This study has important implications in that the newly developed science and engineering assessment can be used in both the research (e.g., evaluate curricula, interventions) and classroom (e.g., assess learning) settings to provide information at the dimension-level, and has the potential to transform how we view and instruct science and engineering during the early childhood years.
