How to watch the Apple event September 7 — live stream the iPhone 14 launch

Here's where you can watch every one of Apple's big announcements today

Apple event september 7 2022 at 10 a.m. PT

If the buzz about today's Apple event is accurate, we could have plenty of new Apple products to see — everything from four new iPhone 14 models to a trio of Apple Watches and new AirPods Pro. And you don't have to miss a moment of it if you know where to watch the Apple September event online.

Apple typically holds a fall product launch in September where it rolls out new products just in time for the holiday shopping season. This year, we have the date — today, September 7 — and a pretty good idea of what to expect. iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro rumors are picking up steam, so those are a safe bet. The heavily rumored Apple Watch 8 should be part of the event, too, and we also expect the AirPods Pro 2 to launch.

Here's how to watch today's Apple event, and we've made it very easy by embedding a video player below. Also check out our Apple event live blog for all the big news as it happens.

When is the Apple September event?

Apple has scheduled its next product launch for today — that's Wednesday, September 7. The in-person event — Apple's first since the Covid-19 pandemic began, give or take a few VIPs at June's Worldwide Developer Conference — starts at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT / 6 p.m. BST.

Apple has billed this event as its Far Out product launch. There are different interpretations as to what Apple means by "far out," but it could be an indicator of some improvements to the cameras included with the iPhone lineup.

How can I watch the September Apple event?

Apple will host a live stream of its September event on its website, and you'll be able to view that on any web browser, whether you're using a laptop, desktop or mobile device.

In addition, Apple continues to live stream its events on YouTube , and the Far Out event will be no exception. We've embedded the video placeholder for the September 7 product launch above, and you can follow along in our Apple event live blog , which is currently tracking all the last-minute news and rumors leading up to the launch.

You can set a notification through YouTube to be alerted when the Apple September event begins. Typically, the placeholder video makes way for a live stream a few hours before the actual event.

If you own an Apple TV, you've got another option for watching the Apple September event, and this one lets you view everything on a TV screen. Apple events can be found in the TV app on the Apple TV, the same area that houses Apple TV Plus content as well as the Up Next and What to Watch streaming suggestions.

What will Apple announce at its September event?

As we noted at the outset, this is the time of year when Apple likes to introduce new smartphones. So even if the company hasn't explicitly confirmed that we're getting a look at the next iPhone on September 7, it's widely assumed that's exactly what's happening.

iPhone 14: Specifically, we're likely to see the iPhone 14, with Apple expected to show off four new models. In addition to the standard 6.1-inch iPhone 14 model, we think we're going to see a 6.7-inch version, which replaces the iPhone Mini in Apple's phone lineup. This new device will either be called the iPhone 14 Max or iPhone 14 Plus, and it's essentially a standard iPhone with a bigger screen.

iPhone 14 Pro concept art

The iPhone 14 Pro lineup figures to be the more impressive of Apple's new phones. In addition to the A16 Bionic processor — the other two iPhones are expected to still use the A15 chip introduced with the iPhone 13 — the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max might replace the notch with a pill-shaped cutout to house the front camera and Face ID sensors. Speaking of cameras, both the main camera and ultrawide lens on the iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to see improvements.

These changes could come at a cost — Apple is said to be increasing the cost of the Pro models by $100 over their iPhone 13 counterparts.

Apple Watch 8: The other big announcement likely to occur on September 7 involves an update to the Apple Watch . And like the iPhone 14, we're expecting to see multiple watches make their debut.

Apple Watch 8 render

You may already be familiar with the Apple Watch 8, one of the annual updates Apple rolls out. The highlight for this year's model will reportedly be a temperature sensor along with a low-power model for extending battery life. But we might also see an Apple Watch 8 Pro , a higher-end version of Apple's watch that's supposedly more rugged than the standard model. Apple could show off an Apple Watch SE 2 , updating the entry-level watch in its lineup.

More: Read 5 biggest Apple Watch 8 rumors .

AirPods Pro 2: This one appeared to be less certain than the iPhone and Apple Watch rumors, but more Apple insiders have stepped up to claim that new AirPods are on the agenda for today's event. That's good since we're overdue for a new version of Apple's high-end wireless earbuds.

Rumored features include fitness tracking tied into the new Apple Watches, improvements to active noise cancellation and the addition of lossless audio support and EQ customization.

New software announcements: The iOS 16 , macOS Ventura and watchOS 9 updates shouldn't catch anyone by surprise since Apple previewed all three software updates in June. However, all three of those updates are slated for fall releases, so Apple could use the occasion of its Far Out event to give us an exact release date. In the case of iOS updates, for example, they usually arrive a few days ahead of any new iPhone launches.

iOS 16 lock screen with Now Playing widget

iPadOS 16 is slated for a fall release, too, though Apple has already confirmed it's arriving later than the iOS 16 release . Still, it wouldn't be out of character for Apple to give us a date for that update, too.

Other possible announcements: An event featuring four new phones, three new watches, and an AirPods update would be pretty packed on its own. But that doesn't prohibit Apple from surprising with something else.

It's heavily rumored that the company is working on a VR/AR headset , though the product itself isn't likely to arrive until next year. Nevertheless, Apple isn't above previewing new products well in advance of their launch. The original iPhone got a sneak preview about six months before its actual release, and the first Apple Watch saw a similar tease. If Apple is serious about establishing its virtual reality bona fides, it could take a similar tack with its rumored headset, taking advantage of an in-person event to preview the device.

Apple's other product lines may see updates before 2022 draws to a close. There's the possibility of a new iPad Pro model coming out this year, New MacBook Pro models with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips have also been tipped for late 2022, with the Mac mini also in need of an update. And that's before we mention the iMac Pro 2023 , which most people are tipping for next year.

Of course, these announcements are far more likely to get an event of their own — probably in October — as opposed to having Apple cram everything into its September 7 event. We'll find out for certain when we tune in for the event live stream later today.

Everything Apple Announced Today: iPhone 14, Apple Watch Ultra, and More

Apple Watch Ultra iPhone 14 Pro and AirPods Pro 2nd Gen on yellow geometric backdrop

It’s September, and you know what that means: iPhone season. Today, Apple held an event at its Cupertino, California, headquarters, where it unveiled annual updates to its mobile devices. There are four new iPhones 14, a more durable Apple Watch for adventure enthusiasts, and a new pair of AirPods Pro.

Here’s everything Apple announced.

Closeup of iPhone 14 Pro camera

iPhone 14 Pro costs $999, or $1,099 for the larger Pro Max.

Did you like the idea of an iPhone Mini? Well, too bad. Apple has nixed its smallest phone in favor of a new iPhone 14 Plus , which sits a rung above the just announced iPhone 14 but below the top-tier iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max . Like its Pro Max sibling, the 14 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen. The standard-size iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro have 6.1-inch displays.

Outside of this, most of the changes with this year’s iPhone lineup are coming to the Pro models. The infamous notch, for example, which housed the sensor components necessary for Face ID, has now slimmed down to a pill-shaped cutout in the same area, not unlike most modern Android phones . It's called the “Dynamic Island” and Apple's making it interactive. If you're on a call, for example, this area will passively show you call controls if you press and hold it. It's a smart way to reclaim the space. There’s also always-on display support, so you won’t have to tap your phone screen or pick it up to see notifications or the time of day.

The sensor notch can now show notifications. Apple calls it Dynamic Island.

The Pro models are also the only handsets to use the brand-new A16 Bionic processor. It’s the first time the standard non-Pro iPhones are sticking with a prior year’s chipset, but this is likely due to supply chain constraints and aimed at keeping costs low. The A15 Bionic in the iPhone 14 is still a super speedy chip, but you won’t get the very best performance.

The primary camera on the Pros will finally move away from 12 megapixels and will utilize a 48-megapixel sensor (a common trait among most Android phones). More megapixels doesn’t necessarily mean better photos, but it will let you capture more detail, and you can print your photos at larger sizes without losing sharpness. Apple says it's using a new Photonic Engine for its image processing on all the new iPhones that deliver improved low-light performance across the board for all the cameras, and a new Action video stabilized mode lets you capture smoother footage than ever before (at a lower resolution).

All of the new iPhones support features like Car Crash Detection, and will get two years of included support for Apple's new Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, which lets you point your iPhone at a satellite to contact emergency services in the event of a dire situation in an area with no cellular service.

iPhone 14 in all the new colors. The base-model 14 starts at $799.

The iPhone 14 costs $799 and is available September 16. The iPhone 14 Plus is $899 and will be available October 7. The iPhone 14 Pro is $999, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is $1,099. They’re up for preorder on September 9 and go on sale September 16.

Apple Watch Ultra

Apple Watch Ultra is on sale now for $799.

Apple’s yearly watch upgrades tend to be iterative. After all, if it ain’t broke, why fix it? That makes this year’s extra rugged and tough Ultra Watch the most exciting Apple wearable announcement since the optical heart sensor landed in the Series 4.

Apple consulted with extreme athletes at the top of their fields, like ultrarunning celeb Scott Jurek, to design the Ultra. The watch is aimed at the premium, over-$500 adventure market that is currently committed to super-fancy Garmins. With a case measuring 49 mm, this is Apple’s biggest watch ever, which allows it to boast an improvement we’ve been anticipating for years: slightly better battery life! Apple claims the Ultra gets 36 hours on a single charge and up to 60 hours in an extended-power mode. (I do feel obligated to note here that the Garmin Instinct 2 gets up to three weeks on a single charge.)

Apple Watch Ultra

Apple Watch Ultra in normal mode (left) and low-light mode (right). The display turns red in dark environments so it doesn't spoil your eyes’ natural night vision.

The other changes, however, are very exciting. The Ultra is swathed in rugged titanium and topped with a durable sapphire crystal display. A new action button in international orange allows you to switch which sports you’re tracking with a press. A precision dual-frequency GPS system tracks your location, even in environments like cities or tree cover that frequently gunk up satellite signals. And a bigger display makes it easier to see all the new advanced fitness metrics that will debut in WatchOS 9, including a new “night mode” that switches the display to a reddish hue in dark environments to preserve your natural night vision.

Apple Watch Ultra with three different watch band options

Apple Watch Ultra comes with one of three straps.

Three bands are available, each aimed at keeping the big honkin’ watch on your wrist in either alpine, trail, or ocean environments. Apple has even bigger plans for the Ultra, including a new Oceanic+ app that will let divers use the watch as a wrist-mounted dive computer—a pretty clear swing at Garmin’s popular high-end dive watches.

Closeup of person rock climbing and wearing Apple Watch Ultra

Apple Watch Ultra. It's big!

The most surprising part of the announcement? The Apple Watch Ultra costs $799. You can preorder it today, and it will ship on September 23. While $799 is pricey, for these specs it is well within the expected Garmin price range. Two and a half days of battery still isn’t enough to go on a basic weekend camping trip, but we’re getting closer.

Apple Watch Series 8 in different colors

Apple Watch Series 8 starts at $399.

Most of the groundbreaking Apple Watch improvements went to the Ultra, so it’s probably not a surprise that if you already own a Series 7 watch, you might not need to upgrade immediately to the new Series 8. This year’s standout health feature is a new body temperature sensor (although, again, I feel obliged to point out that a similar temperature sensor has existed on other watches for years). It’s aimed at tracking women’s ovulation and fertility, although in a post- Roe world you might want to reconsider whether you track that information.

The Series 8 includes Crash Detection, which is also a feature on the Ultra and the iPhone. Two new motion sensors, an improved gyroscope, and a high G-force accelerometer can detect a severe car crash and connect you to emergency services, provide location, and notify your predetermined emergency contacts. Battery life hasn’t improved, although Apple announced a new Low Power mode that can give you up to 36 hours of battery life by temporarily disabling features like the always-on display and auto-workout detection. Cellular models will now also support international roaming.

The new SE is still the affordable Apple Watch, with crash detection, a larger display, and the same chip as the Series 8. The Series 8 will start at $399 for GPS and $499 for the cellular model, along with three months of Apple’s Fitness+ home workout service. The SE starts at $249. The watches will be available on September 16. Time to finally pour one out for the Series 3, which is no longer available.

Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Gen

AirPods Pro 2nd Gen are $249 and go on sale this Friday.

Apple’s new AirPods Pro look like the last version of AirPods Pro . While there’s not a huge difference in looks, there are a few changes in the guts.

The second-generation AirPods Pro have a new custom-made chip called H2 that Apple says boosts the sound quality and noise-canceling abilities of the buds. Battery life is slightly better, at six hours of listening time and 30 hours total in the charging case. It’s better than the previous version but still on the low end compared to other wireless earbuds . There are new touch sensor controls on the stems of the buds, where you can change volume with a swipe of your finger. Apple says it has improved motion detection in the new Pros, which lets it better track fitness activities.

The case for the AirPods Pro gets some improvements as well, most notably the ability to charge on an Apple Watch puck and to sync with Apple’s Find My app and emit a beeping sound to help you locate them when they’re lost. The new AirPods cost $249 and will be available for preorder on September 9.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro showing SOS Satellite feature

The new iPhones come with an emergency SOS feature that can connect to satellites even in places that don’t have cell coverage. Apple says the service will be free for two years if you buy an iPhone 14. Presumably, there will be a monthly fee after that.

If you already have an Apple Watch or an iPhone, you’ll get a software update notification on Monday, September 12; iOS 16 and watchOS 9 will be available as free software updates on that day.

Apple didn’t announce any news about the iPad or Macs today, which all but confirms that we’ll get another Apple event in a month or so with updates to both of those product lines. Both the iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura should arrive in October.

Design changes

Two very different stories here. The iPhone 14 is largely identical to the iPhone 13 (although you do now have the option of a larger screen, which we’ll discuss in due course), but the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max see significant design changes.

iPhone 14

As predicted the Pro models lose the notch, which is replaced by two smaller floating apertures for the front-facing sensors, but these have been made far more of a feature than expected.

Joined together by a black bar to form a single thin lozenge, Apple calls this the Dynamic Island. Its appearance, including size and controls, varies depending on the app and context. It acts as a sort of mini widget, displaying sport scores, running timers, or other basic information from an app you’ve swiped out of, or allowing you to interact with an app without opening it in full.

iPhone 14 Pro dynamic island play icon

Jason Snell/Foundry

This is an ingenious way of turning what could have been an annoyance–we have to wait at least another year for a genuinely all-screen iPhone design–into an appealing feature.

In terms of physical dimensions, this year’s Pro models have slimmer bezels around the screen, yet the camera module on the rear is larger than previously. The lenses themselves are bigger in diameter, and project further from the back surface of the phone. We suspect that most buyers will want to put the 14 Pro in a case to protect this protuberant module, although that would mean missing out on the pleasing new color finishes.

Colour options

The 14 and 14 Plus come in five colors: Midnight, Starlight, (Product) Red, blue and a new purple finish. The Pro models come in silver, gold, a new Space Black and a different and much darker purple, called Deep Purple.

iPhone 14 Pro Max

Screen upgrades

There’s no new version of the 5.4-inch iPhone mini format. (The iPhone 13 mini remains on sale , however, so small-handed buyers still have that option.) Instead Apple has launched a large-screen non-Pro model called the iPhone 14 Plus.

So this is the new lineup:

  • iPhone 14 (with a 6.1-inch screen)
  • iPhone 14 Plus (6.7-inch screen)
  • iPhone 14 Pro (6.1-inch screen)
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7-inch s

Compared to last fall’s lineup of new phones:

  • iPhone 13 mini (5.4-inch screen)
  • iPhone 13 (6.1-inch screen)
  • iPhone 13 Pro (6.1-inch screen)
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max (6.7-inch screen)

Always-on display

Other than the size of the 14 Plus, the screens of the non-Pro models are largely the same as that of the 13. But the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max gain an always-on screen. This will dim automatically and minimise animation and onscreen power usage (it can dynamically drop to a refresh rate of just 1Hz) when the device is idle in order to preserve battery life, while continuing to show the most important information and certain widgets.

iPhone 14 Pro lock compare

The 14 Pro display is also brighter than that of the 13 Pro, with 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness and up to 2,000 nits outdoors.

Camera upgrades

Both Pro and non-Pro iPhones get camera upgrades this year, although there’s no prize for guessing which is more impressive.

Non-Pro models

We’ll begin with the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus.

The basic specs here are the same as last year: you get a dual-camera array with 12MP wide and ultra-wide lenses. But Apple promises better performance thanks to the inclusion of a faster aperture and larger sensor on the main camera.

iPhone 14 and 14 plus in hands

A key part of the 14’s photographic improvement is low-light shooting: Apple claims it offers 49 percent better performance in such conditions. There’s also a new Action Mode designed to improve stabilization when you’re shooting video.

The TrueDepth camera at the front has also been upgraded. It gains autofocus, and here too you should see improved low-light performance thanks to a wider aperture.

The headline upgrade here was leaked well in advance. As expected, the iPhone 14 Pro gains a 48MP wide-angle camera on the rear.

That impressive figure, however, could be slightly misleading. Most photos you take with the 14 Pro won’t be 48MP at all; they will be 12MP, albeit with far greater detail, as the camera uses image processing to combine four pixels into one.

As well as packing more megapixels, this sensor is 65 percent larger than the Wide camera in the iPhone 13 Pro, which again means better low-light performance–up to 2x better, according to Apple’s claims. There’s also a new Photonic Engine computational system to help capture more detail when light is limited.

iPhone 14 Pro camera array

Tech specs and new features

There are lots of improvements under the hood. Here are the key new features and spec upgrades.

Safety features

Apple’s renewed interest in personal safety can be split into two main strands, both of which are also available on the new Apple Watches: a new crash detection feature, and satellite connectivity for emergencies.

Crash detection uses an upgraded gyroscope and accelerometer to recognise when you’re in a crashing vehicle–much like the older Fall Detection feature, but for potentially far more dangerous situations. If the iPhone thinks you’ve been involved in a crash, it will (unless countermanded) call emergency services and notify your preferred contacts.

Emergency SOS via satellite, meanwhile, is a feature that can use satellite connectivity to get in touch with emergency services when you’re out of cellular range. (It’s based on short pre-scripted texts, but if the emergency provider you’re trying to contact only responds to calls, a team of intermediaries will handle that for you.) You’ll need a clear view of the sky, but the feature will show you where to point the device so as to establish and maintain a good connection.

The satellite feature is initially available in the US and Canada only. At some point it seems likely to carry an ongoing fee, but Apple says it will be free for the first two years after purchase.

New A15 and A16 processors

The word “new” there is debatable, but there’s certainly change of sorts in the processor department.

The non-Pro models are still running A15 Bionic chips, just like all four of the 13-series iPhones last fall. But this has been upgraded to carry an additional GPU core (like the one in the 13 Pro last year), and should thus deliver somewhat improved performance over the standard 13. (It’s also possible that Apple has increased the RAM allocation from 2021, as was rumored before the event. We won’t know until review samples start showing up, as Apple doesn’t publicly disclose RAM.)

Far more excitingly, the Pro models get processors from the next generation: the A16 Bionic. As was predicted back in 2020 , this is being manufactured with a 4nm rather than 5nm process, which should mean improved performance and power efficiency. Apple hasn’t given us much concrete detail about the performance we can expect from the A16 (other than that it has 16 billion transistors and the Neural Engine can process nearly 17 trillion operations per second, up from 15.8 trillion in the A15), but the company did claim it’s 40 percent faster than the closest competition.

In other words, expect the 14 Pro to absolutely obliterate any and all speed benchmarks, while delivering less noticeable improvements in the real world until the available software can catch up with its capabilities.

Battery life

Apple is claiming small improvements in battery performance across the range, with the three non-Plus models all gaining an hour on their predecessor. The iPhone 14 Plus, of course, has no direct predecessor–but its larger chassis means a large battery that should comfortably outperform the iPhone 14 Pro. Here are the claimed figures:

  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 29 hours of video playback (up from 28 hours on 13 Pro Max)
  • iPhone 14 Pro: 23 hours (up from 22 hours on 13 Pro)
  • iPhone 14 Plus: 26 hours
  • iPhone 14: 20 hours (up from 19 hours on 13)

Apple unveiled four new iPhones during a press event on Wednesday, along with three new Apple Watches, an updated AirPods Pro and a feature that could save lives when cell service isn't available.

Here's a closer look:

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus : Apple fans can now buy a larger-sized iPhone without paying the Pro price. The new iPhone 14 (6.1 inches) and the iPhone 14 Plus (6.7 inches) feature longer battery life, the same chip as last year's iPhone 13 Pro model (the A15) and a new camera system, including a 12 MP main camera with bigger pixels, a faster aperture and improved sensors. Other features: front-camera auto focus capabilities; a new action mode that lets users keep videos stable while moving; and the removal of the physical SIM card, opting instead for a digital, "e-SIM" card.

Cost: iPhone 14 starts at $799 and the larger iPhone 14 Plus model starts at $899. Colors: midnight, starlight, blue, purple and Product Red.

iPhone 14 Pro: Apple's premium iPhone line redesigned the polarizing notch in favor of a pill-shaped one. Inside holds the true-depth camera, and includes a brand new feature that Apple is calling "dynamic island," for interactive widgets on your lock screen and access to music controls, timer and other features. The models will come in four colors: space black, silver, gold, and deep purple.

AirPods Pro 2: The latest wireless earbuds have a longer lasting battery, feature a button at the bottom of the case that alerts you to its location and improved and dynamic noise-cancellation technology. Cost: $249; hits stores on Friday.

Three new Apple Watches :

Apple Watch Ultra ($799): The high-end smartwatch is designed for outdoor enthusiasts. Think: deep sea scuba divers and triathletes. It features a brighter display, is more water resistant, comes with an advanced compass and gets 60 hours of use time.

Meanwhile, the Series 8 — which starts at $399 for GPS model and $499 for cellular — narrows in on women's health, with revamped period cycle tracking tools that can predict ovulation. It can also detect when a user has been in a car crash.

The Apple Watch SE , which starts at $249 for GPS models and $299 for cellular, also features crash detection technology, and is faster than the previous model.

Satellite connectivity: Emergency SOS via Satellite could be a life saver for people needing to communicate when off the grid. By pointing an iPhone 14 toward a satellite in the sky, which the phone will help locate, users will be able to send and receive information to get emergency help even if cell service isn't working.

iPhone 14 Pro unveils notch-free 'dynamic island' feature

From CNN's Aditi Sangal and Adrienne Vogt

(Apple)

The iPhone 14 Pro will come in four colors: space black, silver, gold, and deep purple.

The device's front eliminates the much-maligned notch, has a true-depth camera, and includes a brand new feature that Apple is calling "dynamic island."

The feature will be like a widget on top of your home screen, where you'll be able to see alerts in a concise way without distracting you from what you're already doing on your phone.

You can get a game's updates or know when your ride share has arrived without leaving the app you're in, Apple's Alan Dye said.

"Each alert has its own personality so they are easy to identify in a glance," he added, saying it "displays dynamic activity, always active and visible."

The island is interactive so you can have easy access to controls for music, a timer, and other tools.

The iOS 16 lock screen will also work with dynamic island, Dye said.

(Apple)

Apple also revealed a 48-megapixel camera with a quad-pixel sensor that will "optimize for detail."

The new sensor groups every four pixels into one large one, according to Apple, and there's an up to two-times improvement in low light compared to the iPhone13 Pro.

iPhone 14 will start at $799, 14 Plus will start at $899

From CNN Business' Catherine Thorbecke

(Apple)

The latest iPhone 14 will start at $799, Apple announced, which is the same starting price as last year's iPhone 13 but with all of the new features. The larger iPhone 14 Plus model will start at $899.

The news brings relief for those who were worried about price hikes. Ahead of the event, some expected Apple to jack up the price of the latest iPhone 14 due to supply chain hiccups and inflationary pressures.

Apple unveils satellite connectivity

From CNN Business' Samantha Murphy Kelly

(Apple)

Apple unveiled the long-rumored satellite connectivity feature called Emergency SOS via Satellite. The tool is intended to help people communicate when their cell service isn't working -- a process that Apple said years to make a reality.

The company said it designed and built specific technology so iPhone 14 devices can connect to satellites when not near a terrestrial tower. By allowing users to point their device toward a satellite, which the phone will help locate, users will be able to send and receive information to get emergency help.

The company said it created a short text compression mechanism to condense messages that take about 15 seconds to send if a user has a clear view of the sky. (It may take a few minutes longer if something like foliage is in the way.)

Apple said local providers will be alerted to help call for help.

Latest iPhones eliminate physical SIM cards

(Apple)

Apple announced that its latest iPhone lineup eliminates the need for a physical SIM card and instead uses a digital, "e-SIM" card.

With this option, you can store multiple e-SIMs on the same device and have multiple cellular plans and phone numbers on the same phone. It also prevents others from removing the physical SIM card if your iPhone is lost or stolen.

Apple said all US models of iPhone will no longer have the SIM tray.

New Airpods Pro will be available for $249 starting Sept. 9

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

(Apple)

Apple's latest generation of AirPods Pro will be available for $249 starting Sept. 9.

Here's what's new:

  • A light swipe up and down the headphone will increase or decrease volume.
  • AirPods will have 6 hours of listening time with a single charge, which is better than the original AirPods Pro.
  • Each headphone is now equipped to make a noise to help you find it.
  • There is also a speaker at the bottom of the case that will make a loud noise to help you find it.

The new AirPods Pro also come with improved and dynamic noise-cancellation technology, Apple's Mary-anne Rau said Wednesday. The Airpods are able to cancel out double the amount of noise than the original AirPods Pro.

The device's H2 chip "delivers advanced computational audio previously unable to run on a device this size," she added.

There's an adaptive transparency mode, which dynamically reduces harsh environmental noise. The AirPods Pro will react instantaneously to any high decibel noise you're exposed to.

Apple also touted more detail and clarity in sound, personalized spatial audio profile options and a smaller ear tip for listeners.

Introducing the new iPhone 14 lineup

(Apple)

Apple unveiled its new smartphone lineup on Wednesday, including the new iPhone 14 with a 6.1-inch screen and the iPhone 14 Plus with a larger 6.7-inch screen.

"As you can see we're going big with iPhone 14 and even bigger with iPhone 14 plus," CEO Tim Cook said as he introduced the lineup.

The latest iPhones feature longer battery life and "ceramic shield" smartphone glass.

The new iPhone 14 uses the same chip as last year’s iPhone 13 Pro model (the A15), the first time it’s repeated a chip in years. It comes with a 12 MP main camera with bigger pixels, a faster aperture and improved sensors.

For the first time, the new front camera has auto focus, allowing it to focus at multiple distances in low light for better individual and group selfies. It also has a new action mode that lets users keep videos stable while moving.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro comes in five colors: midnight, starlight, blue, purple and Product Red.

Apple is launching an $799 smartwatch called Watch Ultra

(Apple)

Apple unveiled a new higher-end $799 smartwatch designed for outdoor enthusiasts,

The new model, called the Apple Watch Ultra, is the "most rugged Apple Watch ever," COO Jeff Williams said on Wednesday. It's designed for “exploration, adventure and endurance,” he said, adding that it "has been in the works for years."

The watch features the biggest, brightest display ever on Apple Watch, making it easier read in the harshest sunlight. It is more water resistant, can be used while wearing gloves and gets 36 hours of battery life on a single charge -- and 60 hours if used with the new battery optimization setting coming this fall.

Apple Watch Ultra will also feature a wayfinder. It includes compass in the dial to work in night, ocean and other topographical conditions, according to Williams.

iPhone SE 4 Rumors: What May Be Next for Apple's Budget Phone

The iPhone SE 4 may get modern features like Face ID, potentially signaling the end of the home button.

new iphone presentation 2022

The 2022 iPhone SE was an incredible value.

Apple's mainline phones, like the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro , usually take the spotlight, but the  iPhone SE  made a comeback in 2020 and 2022.

Looking ahead, the iPhone SE's future is less certain. Rumors and reports about if and when Apple will release an iPhone SE 4 have conflicted, with some predictions from well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggesting the device may have been canceled.

Apple hasn't mentioned whether it plans to release new iPhone SE models moving forward since it rarely speaks about future products. Now that Apple has moved away from the iPhone Mini,  the iPhone SE has an important role to play as the smaller and more affordable iPhone in Apple's lineup.

Read more : Top Phones to Expect in 2024

There's plenty of room for Apple to further improve its pint-size iPhone. While my colleague Patrick Holland praised the 2022 iPhone SE  for its accessible price and familiar home button, he criticized it for its lack of night mode photos and dated design. Android competitors like Samsung and Google have also improved their similarly priced budget phones in recent years. The Google Pixel 7A and Samsung Galaxy A54 5G both offer features once reserved for premium devices, like high refresh rates and multiple cameras.

It's impossible to know exactly what to expect from Apple until the company makes an announcement. Based on predictions from the often-accurate Kuo, along with other leaks and Apple's product launch history, here's what we'd expect from Apple's next budget iPhone.

Apple didn't respond to a request for comment regarding a future iPhone SE when this story was originally published.

new iphone presentation 2022

iPhone SE 4 release date is a mystery

Perhaps the biggest question about the iPhone SE 4 is whether it will ever exist; Kuo's predictions have been back and forth in recent years. In 2019, the analyst said Apple was working on an iPhone SE with a full-screen design similar to the iPhone XR, as MacRumors reported  at the time. Apple has released two versions of the iPhone SE since then that retain the old iPhone 8-inspired design, which led to speculation about whether the model Kuo was referring to has been canceled or postponed.

Kuo's 2023 predictions regarding the iPhone SE 4 have also been mixed. He reported in January that an iPhone SE originally planned for 2024 was canceled , but followed up in February to say the project had been revived . He changed his prediction again in April  to say that the model he previously referred to might just be an engineering prototype for an Apple in-house 5G baseband chip. His previous comments also suggested the iPhone SE 4 would include this 5G chip.

A report from MacRumors indicated Apple is indeed developing a new iPhone SE that reportedly includes some dramatic upgrades. But it may not launch until 2025, according to a newer report from MacRumors .

The iPhone SE's release cadence hasn't been as routine as that of Apple's flagship iPhones. Apple launched the first iPhone SE in March 2016, while the second-generation version came out in April 2020. The newest, third-generation iPhone SE arrived in March 2022. A 2024 launch would fit the schedule Apple has followed in recent years, although it's hard to be certain since there was a four-year gap between the first two models.

Rumors suggest an iPhone 14 or XR-like design

The iPhone XR (left) next to the iPhone 8 Plus (right)

The iPhone XR (left) compared to the iPhone 8 Plus.

If the company is working on another iPhone SE, there's a chance it could have a 6.1-inch screen similar to Apple's modern flagship phones. The current iPhone SE, by comparison, has a 4.7-inch screen with thick borders at the top and chin, much like the iPhone 8.

What's less clear, is which iPhone Apple will model the SE after, if the company is working on a new version. Other than Kuo's 2019 report, serial leaker Jon Prosser and analyst Ross Young , CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, have also suggested that the next iPhone SE could include a larger screen and a design that resembles the iPhone XR.  A MacRumors article  reported in September 2023 that the iPhone SE 4 will have a modified version of the iPhone 14's chassis, and reiterated that point again in November. Given that MacRumors' reports are more recent, it seems reasonable to expect the next iPhone SE to be modeled after the iPhone 14 in terms of appearance.

A reportedly leaked case design further suggests the iPhone SE may have a refreshed look to match Apple's latest devices. The images were published by serial leaker Majin Bu on X as well as on the Chinese social network Weibo before making the rounds on tech blogs such as MacRumors , TechRadar and NotebookCheck .

Kuo's February 2023 post also suggested the iPhone SE 4 could have an OLED screen instead of an LCD, which would mark a notable step up for Apple's cheaper phone. MacRumors similarly reports that the next iPhone SE will have an OLED display.

OLED screens typically show deeper blacks and better contrast compared to LCD, and Apple previously kept this display technology exclusive to its Pro series. Kuo's follow-up  in April mentioned that the device he thought might have been a future SE could just be an engineering prototype.

The iPhone SE will likely have a larger battery

The next iPhone SE could inherit the iPhone 14's battery as well, according to MacRumors. If the blog's previous reports about the iPhone SE 4 following in the iPhone 14's footsteps prove to be accurate, a larger battery would be necessary to power its larger screen. Apple doesn't disclose the battery capacities for its phones, but it says the iPhone 14 should get five extra hours of video playback compared to the third-generation iPhone SE. Between the new chip and bigger battery that we're expecting to find in the next iPhone SE, it sounds like Apple's next affordable iPhone could see some pretty significant gains in battery life.

Touch ID or Face ID? We'll have to see

Fans of Apple's Touch ID fingerprint sensor may be out of luck. MacRumors reports that the next iPhone SE will have Face ID, like other modern iPhones, instead of Apple's fingerprint sensor. That conflicts with Kuo's report from 2019 , which indicated that the next iPhone SE would have a smaller notch area without Face ID and Touch ID embedded in the power button. That sounds similar to Apple's approach with its 10th-generation iPad, fifth-generation iPad Air and sixth-generation iPad Mini, which have Touch ID in the top button.

It may get the iPhone 15's camera, USB-C and Action button

iPhone SE 2022 charging port macr

Apple's next wallet-friendly iPhone may have a few things in common with the iPhone 15. Since Apple switched to USB-C for the iPhone 15 lineup to comply with new European rules, it seems likely that the iPhone SE 4 could ditch the Lightning connector, as well. MacRumors also claims the iPhone SE 4 will have USB-C.

The more surprising note in MacRumors' story is that the iPhone SE 4 could gain the Action button, which is a new key for programming shortcuts that's currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. It would be an interesting choice considering the Action button is currently one of the major differences that distinguishes Apple's new pair of premium iPhones from its entry-level models.

MacRumors also reports that a 48-megapixel single camera could be in store for the next iPhone SE. That would signal another similarity it could share with the iPhone 15, which also has a 48-megapixel main camera. If the report is accurate, the iPhone SE will only have one rear camera, unlike Apple's more expensive phones. The regular iPhone 15 has wide and ultra-wide cameras, while the Pro versions have wide, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras.

It will likely have a new processor, rumored Apple 5G modem

A diagram shows a simplified blueprint of Apple's A16 Bionic smartphone processor

Apple's newest mobile processor is the A16 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 14 Pro series.

The iPhone SE typically has the same processor as Apple's most recent flagship iPhone. For example, the 2022 iPhone SE has the same chip as the iPhone 13, which launched in September 2021. Since Apple's newest mobile chip is usually the iPhone SE's standout feature, it's hard to imagine Apple straying from that pattern.

Kuo also suggested the next iPhone SE could have an Apple-made 5G chip. Still, it's hard to know if that prediction still applies since he later revised his estimate to say this device was likely an engineering prototype to test that 5G chip. MacRumors also reports that the iPhone SE 4 will have an Apple-made 5G modem.

Apple acquired Intel's modem business in 2019, leading to speculation that it will eventually build its own 5G modems rather than rely on Qualcomm as a supplier. Making its own chips allows Apple to maintain greater control over launch timelines and product features, an approach that has been a key part of its strategy across its major product lines. Although Apple hasn't disclosed its future plans, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon told CNBC in March that he's expecting Apple to start using homegrown modems in 2024.

The fourth-generation iPhone SE could end up becoming one of the most exciting iPhone updates in years, simply because we don't know exactly what to expect. If the leaks, rumors and reports turn out to be accurate, Apple's budget iPhone may be set to take a big leap forward in terms of design, functionality and screen size either this year or in 2025.

iOS 18 Will Add These New Features to Your iPhone

iOS 18 is expected to be the "biggest" update in the iPhone's history . Below, we recap rumored features and changes for the iPhone.

iOS 18 Siri Integrated Feature

Apple will announce iOS 18 at its annual developers conference WWDC, which is scheduled for June 10 through June 14 .

Smarter Siri and Generative AI

iOS 18 Mock Siri Feature Baubles

Apple CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly teased that the company is working on generative AI, and plans to share details "later this year," and Apple's marketing chief Greg Joswiak also recently hinted at AI in a social media post about WWDC 2024.

Generative AI surged in popularity in late 2022, when OpenAI released ChatGPT, a chatbot that can respond to questions and other text prompts. The company has also expanded into generative AI tools for images and videos. Other companies like Google and Microsoft have also pushed into the generative AI space, and the technology is quickly evolving.

iOS 18 is not expected to include Apple's own ChatGPT-like chatbot . Instead, Apple has reportedly held discussions with companies such as OpenAI, Google, and China's Baidu about potential generative AI partnerships, which could lead to other chatbots being integrated into iOS 18, although Apple's exact plans are unclear.

Some generative AI features might be exclusive to iPhone 16 Pro models , which are rumored to have a Neural Engine with "significantly" more cores .

More Customizable Home Screen

iPhone Home Screen Gradient Blank Spaces 1

MacRumors exclusively reported that iOS 18 will finally allow users to place app icons anywhere on the Home Screen grid . This means that users will be able to create blank spaces, columns, and rows between app icons. This basic feature has long been available on Android smartphones, and now Apple is bringing it to the iPhone.

iPhone users can already customize the Home Screen with apps such as Shortcuts and Widgetsmith, which can be used to create "blank" app icons and widgets, but Apple's official solution will be much more convenient.

We expect iOS 18 to include additional customization options beyond icon arrangement, as part of the biggest Home Screen revamp in years.

New Apple Maps Features

apple maps 3d feature

With the custom routes feature, Apple Maps users would be able to choose specific roads to travel on while navigating, for reasons such as familiarity or scenic views. This feature is expected to be available in the U.S. only at launch. Google Maps already allows users to create custom routes on the web, and then view them on an iPhone.

Topographic maps first debuted on the Apple Watch last year with watchOS 10, and code suggests that the feature will be expanded to the iPhone, Mac, and Vision Pro with iOS 18, macOS 15, and visionOS 2. These maps include details such as trails, contour lines, elevation, and points of interest for hiking and other outdoor uses.

RCS Support in Messages App

General Apps Messages

RCS support should result in the following improvements to the default messaging experience between iPhones and Android devices:

  • Higher-resolution photos and videos
  • Audio messages
  • Typing indicators
  • Read receipts
  • Wi-Fi messaging
  • Improved group chats, including the ability for iPhone users to leave a conversation that includes Android users

These features are already available for iMessage and in many third-party messaging apps, such as WhatsApp and Telegram. RCS support on the iPhone will extend the features to green bubbles in the Messages app.

Connect with engaged customers by tapping into Thursday Night Football’s new and enhanced ad products

Watch our 2023 newfront presentation on how brands can connect with audiences..

Every year at the upfronts, TV networks, streaming services, and media companies present their content lineups and other features and services to advertisers. Afterward, advertisers and their agencies negotiate and sign deals with TV networks, streaming services, and media companies, committing to spend a set amount of money to buy ads.

Streaming TV and linear TV continue to help advertisers reach a large number of audiences. By connecting with engaged viewers, marketers can help boost their brands’ awareness and consideration. Additionally, supply for premium content is limited, which encourages advertisers to secure ad spots.

The upfronts span weeks of presentations by streaming services and media networks. Audiences who attend these presentations include advertisers, media buyers, marketers, journalists, and TV and streaming industry professionals.

Both the upfronts and IAB NewFronts serve as a way for advertisers to secure inventory at scale. The NewFronts function like upfronts, but for digital and new media companies. NewFronts has a stronger focus on technical features, products, and offerings. At the upfronts, there is a greater focus on content programming, giving ad buyers a chance to preview what content is coming so that they can plan and purchase advertising inventory.

2024 iPhone colors: What will Apple release this year?

The new iPhone 16 won’t be here until September, but we already know a lot about it. More than the new chip, slimmer bezels, and better cameras, the most anticipated feature of each year’s iPhones is the new colors Apple has in store. Here’s what we know so far about what’s coming this year.

iPhone 15: Will there be a new mid-cycle color?

For the past several years, Apple has introduced a new iPhone color midway through the cycle to boost sales and interest a bit before the next model arrives in the fall. Here are the most recent examples of this:

・ March 2023: Yellow (iPhone 14/14 Plus)

・ March 2022: Green (iPhone 13/13 mini); Alpine Green (iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max)

・ April 2021: Purple (iPhone 12/12 mini)

・ April 2018: (PRODUCT)RED (iPhone 8/8 Plus)

・ March 2017: (PRODUCT)RED (iPhone 7/7 Plus)

There haven’t been any rumors of a new iPhone 15 color coming this year, though last year’s yellow color was a surprise release. So Apple may still launch a new color in April or May alongside the rumored iPad Air and iPad Pro.

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus: What new colors are coming?

According to a Weibo leak , the iPhone 16 will expand on the iPhone 15’s offerings, with a total of seven colors: blue, pink, yellow, green, black, white, and purple.

Apple currently offers the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus in five colors: blue, pink, yellow, green, and black. However, they are the palest iPhone colors Apple has ever offered and can almost look white in some lighting. Notably, the iPhone 15 is the first year Apple hasn’t offered an iPhone in (PRODUCT) RED since this finish debuted with the iPhone 7 in 2017.

Apple also still sells the iPhone 14 in blue, purple, yellow, midnight, starlight, and red, as well as the iPhone 13 in blue, pink, midnight, starlight, green, and red. Finally, the iPhone SE is available in midnight, starlight, and red.

Anyron Copeman / Foundry

iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max: What new colors are coming?

A rumor by Majin Bu on X (formerly Twitter) claims Apple will shake up the color options for the iPhone 16 Pro this year with two new hues: desert yellow and cement gray. The colors will reportedly be reminiscent of the classic gold and space gray options last seen on the iPhone 11 Pro.

Like the iPhone 15, Apple’s color palette for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max was somewhat muted this year. Apple took its cue from the phones’ use of titanium for the first time to create four metal-themed colors: natural, blue, white, and black titanium.

Apple doesn’t sell older Pro models, so these are the only colors sold this year. Previously, Apple offered the iPhone 14 Pro in space black, silver, gold, and deep purple.

2024 iPhone: What’s the new color trend?

According to the rumors, Apple will be going a little retro with its colors in 2024. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to get two new shades that closely resemble the gold and space gray hues of old, while the iPhone 16 will see the return of purple and white, which were last seen with the iPhone 12 in 2021 and iPhone 11 in 2020, respectively.

Stay up to date with all the latest news and rumors in our iPhone 16 roundup .

It’s been many years since Apple hasn’t offered an iPhone in a PRODUCT(RED) colorway.

Scottie scheffler tops $15 million in 2024 winnings with another masters win.

Should one need proof there’s more money in professional golf than ever before, Scottie Scheffler’s four-stroke victory at the Masters Tournament gives him more than $15 million in winnings through nine events in 2024 – including just the first of the four major championships.

Scheffler earned $3.6 million and collected his second Green Jacket in three years by convincingly pulling away down the stretch during Sunday’s final round at Augusta National Golf Club. The No. 1 ranked golfer in the world birdied six of his final 11 holes as challengers faltered to notch his third win of the young season and become the first pre-tournament favorite to win the Masters since Tiger Woods in 2005.

Scheffler’s $15.1 million in official winnings is the third highest in a single season in PGA Tour history and certainly puts him in striking distance of the record $21 million he raked in last year. Scheffler has already surpassed the $14 million he earned in 2022, when he won four times (including the Masters) and led the PGA Tour in prize money.

There’s been significant attention toward the money handed out to professional golfers who made the jump to the LIV Golf tour in recent years. But the competition also led the PGA Tour to significantly raise its tournament payouts. Augusta National has as well, boosting its total purse for the Masters to $20 million this year.

Prior to the past two years, there were just five instances in PGA Tour history of the leading money winner topping $10 million. Three of those were by Woods (2005, 2007, 2009) and the other two were Vijay Singh in 2004 and Jordan Spieth in 2012.

During the 2021-22 season, Scheffler and Cam Smith both eclipsed $10 million in winnings.

Last year, as the PGA Tour boosted its prize money total to $415 million, seven players won at least $10 million, with Scheffler becoming the first golfer to top the $20 million earnings milestone despite “only” two wins.

The 27-year-old Scheffler has already surpassed that win total this year by taking titles in three of his past four starts. He pocketed over $9 million last month alone, with a $4 million check for winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational, a $4.5 million payday for defending his title at the Players Championship, and over $550,000 for his runner-up finish at the Houston Open.

“I'm playing really good golf right now,” said Scheffler, who has yet to shoot a round above par in 2024 and is a combined 142-under par over 35 tournament rounds. “I feel like I'm in control of my emotions as I've ever been, which is a good place to be. I feel like I'm maturing as a person on the golf course, which is a good place to be.”

“It's hard to argue with the results of the last few weeks,” added Scheffler, whose wife Meredith is pregnant with the couple’s first baby. “I've been playing some nice golf. But I really try to not focus too much on the past. I'm going to go home this week and reflect on this week and soak it in as best I can.”

Get more done on iPad.

Quickly insert objects, find settings, and get to your favorite tools with the customizable toolbar. And Stage Manager makes it easy to multitask across multiple presentations and apps at the same time. 1

Make backgrounds disappear.

Now you can more easily remove backgrounds from supported images — and even live videos — or adjust them to your liking.

Add live video feeds to any slide.

Appear in a window, right on your slides, with a picture-in-picture display during remote presentations. Or include a live feed of your iPhone or iPad screen to show off apps.

Get started with dynamic themes.

Start with one of three beautiful new animated themes, then customize it to set the tone for each slide with 18 adjustable background presets — from understated to highly visual, monochrome to colorful, calm to energetic.

Captivate your audience with dynamic backgrounds.

Make your presentation stand out by adding stunning color and visual interest to your slides. Create motion on a title or closing slide for a bold statement, and keep viewers engaged with subtle movement throughout the presentation.

Present with your team. Seamlessly.

For slideshows with multiple presenters, you can take turns controlling a single deck — from anywhere — on Mac, iPad, and iPhone.

Play YouTube and Vimeo videos right in Keynote.

Embed a video from YouTube or Vimeo, then play it right in your presentations, without the need to download or open the video in a media player. 2

Present over video conference. Like a pro.

Play a slideshow in its own window so you can access other apps while you present. You can view your presenter notes, upcoming slides, and navigation in a separate window as well.

Outline your presentation. Easier.

With outline view for iPhone and iPad, quickly jot down your thoughts, restructure ideas, and move concepts from slide to slide. Then switch to slide view and start designing.

Present like never before. From anywhere.

With Keynote, presenting remotely can be just as seamless as presenting in person. Say goodbye to saying “Next slide, please” — now multiple people can present together, even remotely, with each person taking control of their section of the deck. Add a live video feed of yourself to any slide for a picture-in-picture experience. Or when presenting on your Mac, include a live feed of your iPhone or iPad screen to walk through your apps. You can even play a slideshow in its own window, so you can simultaneously access your notes and other apps.

Any presentation. Any device. Anytime.

You don’t work in one place on just one device. The same goes for Keynote. Work seamlessly across all your Apple devices. The slides you create using a Mac or iPad will look the same on an iPhone or web browser — and vice versa.

You can also work on presentations stored on iCloud or Box using a PC.

Start using Keynote at iCloud.com

Create and present together. Even when apart.

Work together in the same presentation, from across town or across the world. You can see your team’s edits as they make them — and they can watch as you make yours, too. You can even get notifications when people join, edit, or comment. When presenting as a team, you can also take turns controlling a single deck from anywhere.

Use Apple Pencil when inspiration strikes.

Add color, illustrations, and handwritten comments for more beautiful presentations with Apple Pencil on your iPad.

Plays well with Office.
