Two months ago, I had the privilege of taking part in an inter-school extempore competition. First, a screening contest was held in our school. Around twenty students delivered a speech on the topic. “Is the education of women necessary for the upliftment of Indian society? We all had prepared well, but the final result had the names of the best three participants only. My joy knew no bounds, when I saw my name in the list. I had no idea that I would be selected. I had done well, no doubt, but to represent my school in an inter-school competition was a very big responsibility.

The competition was a month away. A month? It was too short a time to prepare on all the topic under the sun, I selected a number of recent topics and started preparing myself earnestly. I wanted to win laurels for my school. It did not mater to me if I did not win, but at the same time, I wanted to earn a good reputation for my school. My father helped me a lot, he would point out weaknesses, and within a month, I was ready to face the contest.

The day of the competition dawned. Oh! It was a very gloomy rainy day. My spirits sagged but my parents encouraged me saying I was sure to get success. I reached the Youth Hostel, where the contest was scheduled to be held. There were many contestants, all waiting with bated breaths, for the competition to commence.

The judges arrived, and the rules of the contest were told. The topic was “Global Warming”. Each student was allowed to speak for seven minutes, after six minutes, a warming bell would be rung. After the warning bell, the student could speak for only one minute, after which he/she would be disqualified. There were fifty students from prestigious schools.

As my turn was approaching, I felt sweet beads breaking out on my forehead. Although I was well prepared, I could not help feeling nervous. My name was called out and I approached the stadium. Before starting. I prayed in my mind, asking God to help me.

I started speaking and I got so engrossed in my speech, I did not realize how time flew, till I heard the bell. I concluded the topic and came back to my seat. I couldn’t believe that the contest was over. All the other students, spoke veiy well, truly, the cream of the student community was present there. The matter they presented was concise and interesting. I did not think, I stood a chance of winning. It was a very tough competition.

At the end of three hours, the contest came to a close. We waited, in eager anticipation, for the panel of judges to announce the results. It seemed that time had come to a standstill. At last one of the judges came to the dais. As he announced the result, there was loud applause. There were three prizes. Each of the Prize winners was awarded a cash prize along with a certificate. My name led the list of prize winners! I was so overjoyed that tears rolled down my eyes. I received my prize and went home as a proud winner! So overjoyed that tears came to my eyes. Thinking that I had brought honor to the school. I thanked God and felt very humble before his bounty.

January 1, 2019; New Delhi: This year the Interschool Debate Competition was held at our school. There were 24 different schools participating. The competition was held for a week. Food and accommodation were arranged at our school hostel. All the participants were extraordinarily skilled.

One could actually see the future leaders in the contestants. The decisions of the judges were final. There were no foul plays. This year our school won the first prize and much to our amazement two of the best speakers were from our school.

All the participants were students with equal calibre and potential but in the end, some stood out shining brighter than the others. The topic for the final competition was ” the increasing number of old age homes in India “. There were so many notable points presented by each team but the point presented by the winning team was the game-changer.

The prizes were given away by the honourable education minister, who talked about a few memories from his school days.

Intercollege Debate Competition

August 18, 2018; Kerala: The day of the final competition had arrived. Everyone was at the brim of tension. A hot discussion was going on between the judges. Everyone present knew that the decision was rather difficult, even for the judges. The final teams presented their views and proved their points in such a manner that none could decide which team was better.

The competition was a week long. There were a large number of participants from different colleges. All the necessary arrangements were done by our college management and students. Food and accommodation for all the registered participants were arranged in the college. The topic was ” Corruption and Politics “.

This was the topic given for the final round. This brought to light many of the hidden facts about corruption in politics. Every point presented was accepted with cheering. So sharp were the points that it actually made a commoner think about the fact. The first prize was won by St.Teresa’s College.

Inter-Department debate competition

January 1, 2019; New Delhi: The debate competition was held between different departments. Each department could be represented by two teams. The competition was judged by an excellent debater known for his skills in debating. The competition was held in the auditorium. Points presented were accepted by the spectators with cheers and claps.

Some of the points even made us think about the facts. There was so much talent in the room. Arguments were made and proved. The competition was so interesting that it had a very huge audience. The competition was a huge success. Our college chairperson was selected as the best speaker and debater.

The first prize was won by the department of political science. They marched through the college ground. At the end of the prize distribution, the principal gave his presidential speech thanking everyone for their active participation and also the organisers, and everyone who worked for making this a success. Our principal appreciated the judging panel and also all the participants for sharing their views with us.

Inter-state College Debate Championship

January 1, 2019; New Delhi: The competition was arranged by the Mahatma Gandhi University. Participants representing different states from different colleges had come to take part in the competition. The huge attraction of this competition is that the winner receives a check of 1 lakh for the college he/she studies and a sum of twenty thousand for themselves.

Experts from every State came to take part in the competition. This is a competition conducted to bring out the talents in the students and to take it to the next level. There were heated discussions. All the necessary arrangements for the participants were arranged in the college where the competition was held.

There were refreshment counters and snack bars. There were necessary precautions taken in case of any emergencies. The participants exhibited their oratory skills and displayed their knowledge. They proved their points in such a manner that the audience was convinced.

The competition was a huge success and the first prize was won by the team representing New Delhi. The best debater was Royce Adams. The competition came to an end with a vote of thanks given by the principal of the college in which the competition was held.

You may choose (but are not required) to respond to one or more of the questions below.  

  • Describe a specific experience during your time at Emory that highlights the impact of international/global education on your personal and academic growth. How did this experience shape your understanding of global issues and cultural diversity?  
  • How have you contributed to the diversity of perspectives at Emory through your involvement, identity, and leadership?

Meet the winners of The Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition 2023

The Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) is the world's oldest international schools' writing contest, established by the Society in 1883. With thousands of young people taking part each year, it is an important way to recognise achievement, elevate youth voices and develop key skills through creative writing.

Each year, entrants write on a theme that explores the Commonwealth's values, fostering an empathetic world view in the next generation of leaders and encouraging young people to consider new perspectives to the challenges that the world faces. Themes have included the environment, community, inclusion, the role of youth leadership, and gender equality.

In the past decade alone, this high-profile competition has engaged approximately 140,000 young people, over 5,000 schools and thousands of volunteer judges across the Commonwealth.

Celebrating the Commonwealth Year of Youth, the theme, 'A Youth-Powered Commonwealth,’ asked QCEC entrants to explore the power young people hold within the global community and to consider how this power can be harnessed to make a meaningful impact in the world.

Siddhi Deshmukh

Senior Winner

A creative thinker and a voracious reader, Siddhi Deshmukh is from the city of Mumbai, India. Siddhi is a 17 year-old student currently studying in Mayo College Girls’ School, Ajmer. She is the President of the English Creative Writing Society, and head of the World Scholar’s Cup club at her school. Siddhi’s role is instrumental in writing and directing the upcoming Annual School Play, and she is also an active member of Mayo College Girls’ School’s English Editorial Team. Siddhi’s passions lie in studying English Literature, History, Psychology, and Political Science, and she plans to pursue her passions in the future.

Siddhi is a canine lover and values her time that she spends with her dog, Snowy, whenever she is home. One of her major interests is films, as she finds them immensely empowering, and she loves watching them with her mother. A huge fan of Hozier, Bowie and the Beatles, Siddhi also finds inspiration in music and books. Her favourite authors include J.R.R Tolkien, Donna Tartt and Oscar Wilde. Siddhi, through her expression of writing, delves into the existential conflict of human existence and her writing is often inspired by the experiences she draws from her personal life.

Shreeya Sahi

Ever since Shreeya was young, she was hungry for stories, and always wanted more. Now, at age 12, she loves writing stories as much as reading them.

She currently lives in Panchkula, a cosy town in Northern India. Shreeya has hopped through schools with varied philosophies in USA and India. The different perspectives and thoughts have shaped her into who she is today. 

Her passion lies in creating magic from the mundane. She fills empty sketchbooks with whimsical drawings, bakes with whatever's in her kitchen, and delights in skipping stones on a still pond. 

For the Queens Commonwealth Essay competition Shreeya wrote a letter to the Little Prince, expressing her admiration for him. She is grateful for her family, friends, and facilitators and wishes all of them could be present for the award ceremony. A special nod to Mr. Gibbs and Mrs. Mckeown, who seeded her love for writing, and her steadfast mom and comical brother, who were there for every story twist.

Yong Sin Kong is a 15-year-old Form 3 student from Kluang High School. She has been an avid enjoyer of storytelling since her early years, whether it be in the form of literature, cinema, or theatre. Whenever she writes, she draws inspiration from the people she idolises, ranging from Neil Gaiman to Lin Manuel-Miranda.

She is an ardent fan of the Beatles, musicals, 80s coming-of-age films, and dystopian novels. More often than not, you can find her dancing around her room to the latest Taylor Swift album or diligently journaling with glitter gel pens. In Johor, Malaysia, she shares her life with her family and her loyal dog, Mimi.

Isabel Allende once said, “Write what should not be forgotten.”

That is a quote 11-year-old Mitali Ragtah has always lived by on her journey as a young writing enthusiast. In the gloomy winters of 2020, during the lockdown, 9-year-old bookworm Mitali wanted to do something different. So, she brought together some short poetry and voilà, her first book, “Freedom then and now” was written.

Then she wrote her second book in 2022, “Fairy tales with a twist”. It was inspired by all the girls who believed they were weak and powerless and needed a prince to solve all their problems. Mitali strongly believes in and advocates gender equality and for this she has participated in some in-school organisations and many debate clubs.

When she isn’t scribbling away, Mitali likes to hang out with her family and friends, play soccer and perform the classical India dance, Bharatnatyam.

Important Notes.

  • The two Participants must be in a Senior PUBLIC or PRIVATE Secondary SCHOOL in Lagos

Beginning in the 1830s, the Siberian weasel invaded the Irtysh zone from the east to the west in the forest zone and the north to the south from the forest zone to the forest-steppe and steppe zones. Initially, the abundance of the species gradually increased, underwent a rise with a 1.5- to 2-fold biotic excess capacity of the territory, and then decreased, which was followed by the formation of cyclic changes in the abundance with double intervals averaging 22.5 years. Now, the highest density of the Siberian weasel population is registered in the northern and central forest steppe, it is lower in the forest zone and minimum in the southern forest steppe and steppe. In addition, the biotic relations of the Siberian weasel are characterized as follows: neutralism complemented by the elements of commensalism (with badger, weasel, steppe polecat, ermine, and American mink); antibiosis (amensalism with European pine marten, fox, corsac fox, raccoon dog; competition with sable; predation by wolverine); relations with sable and European pine marten are antagonistic in a number of habitats. In order to understand cyclic changes in the size of the Siberian weasel population inhabiting the Middle Irtysh zone, additional study is required.

Winners of TSL International Essay Competition and Debate 2022

TSL International Student Essay Competition Winners!

The 2022 Essay Competition concluded with the Student Debates and Partner Power Summit. During the Debate and Summit – held online from 11th to 16th July – we had a fruitful week addressing the theme of Climate Justice. This year, we received 1,122 essay entries from 59 countries and the top 10 winners were announced at the Awards Ceremony.  See the winners below.

Primary Schools

Esther Oyinboade, from Pearl Shore, Nigeria, is the recipient of this year’s first prize. Esther’s essay highlights the environmental challenges faced by her country. These include resource loss due to mismanagement, desertification, pollution and gender inequality. Esther recommended several ideas to help address these problems, including afforestation and innovative technologies, policies and educational initiatives.

The first prize and also the Grand Prize winner was awarded to Dhruv Bhatt from Bhartiyam International School in India. The judges were impressed by Dhruv’s focus on the social inequalities in the slums of India. He believes that the education of basic sciences will empower young people in vulnerable societies to take action to combat the climate crisis.

Student Debates

The debate brought together 53 students from 33 countries. The students expressed different points of view on addressing different inequalities to help combat the climate crisis. The debate was divided into two categories across two days – Primary and Secondary. In the Primary Debate, the debaters addressed generational, economic, gender and racial inequality – building on the ideas put forward in their essays. Then, in the Secondary Debates, the debaters looked at inequalities from both “Pro” and “Con” sides, demonstrating both positive and negative arguments for addressing inequality to combat the climate crisis. The judges had a challenging time and finally picked multiple best teams and individuals for commendations, due to the many compelling arguments put forward.  The winners are listed below.
