Introduction: the miracle of life.

My son, the embodiment of my hopes and dreams, is a living testament to the miracle of life. His existence has profoundly altered my perspective, reshaping my understanding of love, responsibility, and the essence of human potential.

The Journey of Growth

Watching my son grow is akin to witnessing a seed sprouting into a sapling. Each day brings a new development, a fresh layer of complexity. His first word, his first step, his first day at school – these milestones are not just his achievements, but mine too. They serve as reminders of the immense capacity of human growth and the transformative power of nurturing.

Reflections on Parenthood

Parenthood, particularly through the lens of raising my son, has been a journey of self-discovery. It has unveiled my strengths and weaknesses, teaching me patience, resilience, and the true meaning of unconditional love. My son’s laughter is my solace, his tears my deepest sorrow. His victories are my triumphs, his struggles my battles.

The Promise of the Future

My son holds the promise of the future. His youthful curiosity, boundless energy, and unjaded perspective inspire me to envision a world full of possibilities. As he navigates through life, I am confident that he will contribute positively to society, embodying the values and principles I have strived to instill in him.

In conclusion, my son is not just a person; he is a journey, an ongoing narrative of growth, discovery, and promise. He is my life’s greatest accomplishment and my most profound source of inspiration.

500 Words Essay on My Son

The miracle of parenthood.

The moment I held my son for the first time, I felt a surge of emotions that words could hardly describe. It was a beautiful amalgamation of joy, fear, love, and responsibility. The tiny bundle of joy, with his innocent eyes and soft coos, was a mirror reflecting my own self, and yet, he was a unique soul, ready to explore the world in his own way.

Watching Him Grow

As my son grew, I saw him evolve, each day presenting a new facet of his personality. His first steps, his first words, his first day at school – each milestone was a testament to his growth and my journey as a parent. He was not just growing physically but also emotionally and intellectually. His curious questions about the world, his innocent interpretations, and his unique perspectives often left me amazed. They were a constant reminder that he was not just a reflection of me but an individual with his own thoughts and ideas.

The Challenges and Triumphs

Raising a child is not without its challenges. There were sleepless nights, countless worries, and the constant fear of making mistakes. But every challenge was worth the triumphs. His first word, his first A grade, his first soccer goal – every accomplishment filled me with a sense of pride and joy that outweighed any hardship.

The Lessons He Taught Me

My son, in his own way, has been my greatest teacher. Through him, I learned the true meaning of unconditional love and patience. I learned to appreciate the little things in life, to find joy in the simplest of moments. I learned to see the world through a child’s eyes – full of wonder, curiosity, and endless possibilities.

The Journey Ahead

As my son enters his teenage years, the journey of parenthood takes a new turn. It’s a phase of transition, not just for him, but for me as well. It’s about giving him the freedom to make his own choices and learn from his mistakes, while still being there to guide and support him. It’s about balancing the fine line between being a parent and a friend.

Conclusion: The Joy of Being a Parent

In conclusion, being a parent to my son has been the most rewarding journey of my life. It’s a journey filled with love, joy, challenges, and learning. It’s a journey of watching a part of me grow into an individual with his own dreams and aspirations. It’s a journey that has shaped me as much as it has shaped him. As I watch my son grow, I look forward to the many more milestones, triumphs, and lessons that lie ahead. For in the end, it’s not just about raising a child, but also growing and evolving as a person.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

I Love My Son — But I Don't Always Like Him

Our personalities are so different and we struggle to connect in a way that I feel we should.

this image is not available

My oldest child has a chokehold on my heart. I love him fiercely and would roll over and die for him like any decent mother would do, but I don't understand my kid. He mystifies me on a daily basis and the result is a wide chasm filled with glitches and huffing frustration from both of us.

I never wanted kids to begin with. I know, that sounds horrible to admit, but it's true. I wanted to be the cool aunt to my many nieces and nephews because the thought of being a mother truly terrified me. I had absolutely no idea how to relate to children outside of the fun parts of games and toys.

When my husband and I found out we were expecting, I cried like a total wimp while my husband gave the universe a fist bump and a giant, "HELL YEAH!" We obviously had two different ideas about the news of that pregnancy.

When our son was born, every single misgiving I had during pregnancy melted away and was slowly replaced with the kind of fears that every new parent has. My entire focus in life shifted from selfish to selfless and I spent the next few years growing into the mother I never thought — and am still surprised to find — that I was capable of being.

But now my son is old enough to have his own unshakable ideas about how he navigates this life and those ideas are diametrically opposed to mine; we glitch constantly. And although it pains me to say it, there are days when no matter how much I love my child, I find that I don't like him.

I hear parents whispering all the time about how they have a favorite child and that that favoritism shifts back and forth between their kids based on good or annoying behavior. I always quietly judged them and thought they must be missing a chunk of their soul to say such a thing, but I get it now. I have ephemeral favorites too and those weird feelings of favoritism shift based on how many glitches I am experiencing with my oldest son.

One day when my son was particularly energetic and bouncing off the furniture, throwing toys across the room, shouting instead of talking, and generally behaving like a total tyrant, I yelled, "Why can't you just sit down and be quiet?! I can't figure you out! Why are you so hard to understand?!"

He started crying and looked at me like I had just slapped him. His eyes welled with tears and his hands went up to cover his face. My heart broke into thousands of complicated pieces. In that moment of frustration I had yelled out a selfish truth to a child who was justifiably expecting me to be a selfless mother. What the hell was wrong with me? Who the hell says THAT to a child?! I was so ashamed of myself.

Of course, he could not have possibly begun to understand the locus of my confusion and inability to relate to his energy and attitude. And yet there was I was yelling because I have nothing in common with my child and couldn't understand his perspective to save my life.

And that is when it hit me that my son is not the problem. I am. I realized how unbelievable unfair it was for me to expect that he would grow to be a person like me, with the same wants, the same personality, the same temperament. I had to come to terms with the fact my kid is a unique person with ideas that are radically different from mine.

This was one of those ugly albeit humbling lessons in motherhood. While I always figured that as a parent I would instinctually have all the answers so that I could raise great kids, it turns out that I know nothing and that being a good mom means forcing myself to let my child change me in profound ways. If I'm not open to that change then I will never have hope of fully understanding my kids; I will fail as a mother.

10 Things I Love About My Son

Posted on August 1, 2013 Written by Tonya

When it comes to our children, we all think we’ve hit the jackpot… Our kids are the cutest, sweetest, smartest and most well-behaved and everyone else’s aren’t. And while that be so in own little delusional worlds, when it comes to my kid, there are a few things that I am really grateful for that Lucas is/does/doesn’t do/has:

10. He has never EVER been a screamer. THANK GOD!!

9. Despite being a very picky eater, h e has always been a very neat eater, who doesn’t like using his hands and wipes his mouth with a napkin almost after every bite.

8. He may not always go to sleep at his bedtime, but he can entertain himself (usually by looking at books, amusement park maps and catalogs) by himself until he falls asleep and the typical requests for water, snacks, extra cuddles, just five more minutes, etc. are at a minimum.

7. He has WAY more patience than I do when it comes to waiting in lines, waiting in doctor’s offices and getting stuck in traffic. He just accepts it.

6. He has his dad’s sense of humor… very dry and expression filled. He knows how to bring the funny and keep you on your toes.

5. He has the makings of a true humanitarian displaying genuine concern about other people and their well-being. If he overhears me talk about a sick friend, days later he will ask me how they are doing.

4. He is social and wants to meet and talk to new people and make friends.

3. He is crazy inquisitive and the questions he comes up with and the connections he makes and the details he retains blow my mind daily.

2. His blue eyes make me melt. They are bight and beautiful and are a direct reflection of my own and my father’s, which I have written about before here .

1. He’s happy. He wakes up smiling and goes to bed smiling. Sure he has his moments (he’s still only four) and we definitely butt heads from time to time, but for the most part, he is really easy going (another trait he most certainly got from his dad).

I honestly don’t know what I ever did to deserve such an amazing and special blessing. I love this kid to pieces and I could come up with hundreds of qualities, quirks and special characteristics that I adore about him.

What are your favorite things about your child?

One of my favorite things about my four year old is how tender he is. He is going to melt some lady’s heart one day. My middle son has taken after his father and does everything so assiduously. My daughter has a gorgeous heart – not mean spirited at all. These are the things that I love. Thanks for helping me to remember them.

What a great list! The best part about making a list like this is one day they grow older (yup, for real), and you can look back and see how these traits are still in them – just more developed! My kids love hearing about the things I loved about them when they were smaller, because I can always tie it right to who they still are now!

European colonization began with the Spanish: Juan Ponce de Len (of Fountain of Youth fame) sighted the area first, and later Spanish explorers were excited by the well protected, deep water bay. They recommended settlement, and in 1559, Tristn de Luna y Arellano arrived at the bay and founded the first European settlement in the United States. He named it. Puerto de Santa Maria. It failed miserably. He sent his men on worthless scouting missions into the desolate pine forests, lost all of his ships in a hurricane (with the supplies still on board!), and was so incapable and uninspiring that his men mutinied. He lived, thanks to the intervention of Catholic missionaries in the town, but once Spanish ships arrived a few months later, the remaining Spaniards quickly abandoned the settlement. Spain didn’t return.

Grants are available from bodies such as English Heritage, but it is still the residents who bear the financial brunt and some prefer to stick with chain link fencing, however ugly. But security is also a major issue and a solid set of railings is considered by many to be a practical necessity, keeping undesirables at bay. Not that they are always deterred. Three years ago, London’s largest garden, Ladbroke Square, had its entire complement of benches stolen.

  • Offer Encouragement: Encourage your son to pursue his dreams and goals with confidence. Let him know you believe in his abilities.
  • Include Personal Experiences: Share your own life experiences and lessons learned. This shows your vulnerability and makes your advice relatable.
  • Use Positive Language: Frame your messages positively. Focus on what your son can achieve rather than dwelling on limitations.

Feel free to use them as templates or draw inspiration from them to create a unique and heartfelt letter tailored to your son’s needs and personality.

Letter #1: “Courageous Heart: Overcoming Life’s Challenges”

My Dearest [Son’s Name],

I hope this letter finds you in good spirits and health. As I sit down to write to you today, my heart is filled with a profound love and admiration for the wonderful person you are becoming. Watching you grow and evolve into the remarkable young man you are today has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Your kindness, intelligence, and determination never cease to amaze me, and I want you to know how immensely proud I am to be your parent.

I want to share with you a personal story from my own life, a moment when I faced a significant challenge that tested my courage and strength. It was a time when I was just a few years older than you are now, and I found myself in a situation that seemed insurmountable. I had taken on a project at work that was incredibly demanding, and it felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders. I was overwhelmed with self-doubt, anxiety, and fear of failure.

The nights were long, and there were moments when I wanted to give up and walk away from it all. But I didn’t. Instead, I dug deep within myself and found a reservoir of inner strength I never knew I had. I realized that courage doesn’t mean the absence of fear, but rather the ability to move forward in the face of it. I kept reminding myself that challenges are opportunities in disguise, and every obstacle is a stepping stone towards personal growth and success.

I want you to understand that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. It’s about acknowledging your fears, embracing them, and then taking a step forward, even when your heart is pounding with uncertainty. It’s about believing in yourself, even when the world doubts you. It’s about never giving up on your dreams, no matter how tough the road may seem.

To cultivate a courageous heart, my dear son, always remember these words:

Believe in Yourself. Have unwavering faith in your abilities. You are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to.

Face Your Fears. Don’t run from your fears; confront them head-on. This is where growth and resilience are born.

Learn from Setbacks. Don’t be disheartened by failures. They are not the end but a stepping stone towards success. Each setback is a lesson waiting to be learned.

Surround Yourself with Positivity. Choose to be around people who uplift and support you. A strong support system can make all the difference.

Stay True to Your Values. Your values are your moral compass. Stand by them even when it’s challenging.

Keep Moving Forward. Life will throw curveballs, but don’t let them stop you. Keep moving forward with determination and purpose.

Always remember, my dear son, that I believe in you wholeheartedly, and I am here to support you every step of the way. Your courage and resilience will carry you through life’s challenges, and I have no doubt that you will achieve greatness.

In closing, I want to leave you with a quote that has always inspired me and continues to do so. It’s by Mary Anne Radmacher and goes like this: “Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.'”

I love you more than words can express, and I am so proud of the incredible person you are becoming. Keep your heart courageous and your spirit resilient, and you will achieve all your dreams.

With all my love and unwavering support,

[Your Name]

Letter #2: “The Kindness Compass: Navigating Life’s Path”

I hope this letter finds you well and filled with the same warmth and love that I carry for you in my heart. I want you to know just how deeply proud I am of the person you are becoming. Your kindness, my dear, is a beacon of light that shines brightly in our world, and it fills my heart with immense joy.

Kindness, my son, is a force of nature, a guiding light that can lead us through life’s darkest moments. I’ve seen it firsthand, in countless acts that have touched my heart and reminded me of the beautiful soul you are. Remember that time you helped your friend with their math homework, patiently explaining the concepts until they understood? Your willingness to lend a hand, without hesitation, was a testament to your empathy and compassion.

Or how about the day you saw a stray kitten shivering in the rain and brought it home, gently nursing it back to health? Your kindness wasn’t limited to people; it extended to all living creatures, teaching me that empathy knows no bounds.

These acts of kindness, my son, are not insignificant. They are like ripples in a pond, spreading love and warmth to everyone they touch. I’ve seen how your kindness has built bridges between people, how it has melted away misunderstandings and brought smiles to faces that were once filled with tears.

Never underestimate the impact of your kindness, for it has the power to change lives, to heal wounds, and to mend broken hearts. In a world that can often feel cold and unforgiving, your kindness is a beacon of hope, a reminder that goodness prevails.

As you continue on your life’s journey, my dear, I want to offer you some guidance. Make kindness a central part of your life, let it be your compass in navigating the world. Embrace empathy, for it allows you to walk in someone else’s shoes, to understand their struggles and joys. Cultivate compassion, for it is the driving force behind every act of kindness. And always seek to understand, for in understanding, you can bridge divides and bring people closer together.

Remember, my son, that being kind doesn’t mean being weak. Kindness is a strength that can move mountains and change the world. It takes courage to be kind in the face of adversity, but it is a courage worth embracing.

I want you to know that I wholeheartedly support your efforts to be a force for good in this world through your acts of kindness. Your journey may have challenges, but never waver in your commitment to spreading love and kindness. And when you face moments of doubt or discouragement, remember this quote that I hold dear in my heart: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

With all my love and pride,

Letter #3: “Passion Unleashed: Embracing Your Dreams”

My dearest [Son’s Name],

I want you to know just how much I love and admire you. Watching you grow into the amazing person you are today fills my heart with immense pride and joy. Your curiosity, your determination, and your boundless enthusiasm have always been a source of inspiration for me.

Life is a journey filled with twists and turns, and along the way, you’ll encounter countless opportunities to pursue your passions and dreams. I want you to know that I wholeheartedly believe in your ability to achieve whatever you set your mind to, just as I’ve witnessed in the lives of others who followed their hearts.

Let me share a personal story with you. When I was young, I had a passion for writing, just like you have a passion for [mention your son’s passion or interests]. I remember spending hours in my room, scribbling down stories, poems, and ideas. At times, it was challenging, and there were moments when I doubted myself. But I persevered, driven by the sheer love for what I was doing. Over the years, my dedication paid off, and I found a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose in my writing. It became not just a hobby but a way of life, allowing me to express myself and connect with others in meaningful ways.

I’ve also seen friends and acquaintances who pursued their dreams with unwavering determination. From the musician who practiced tirelessly to the scientist who delved into research with relentless passion, their stories all share a common thread: they found their calling and embraced it wholeheartedly. They faced obstacles, setbacks, and moments of self-doubt, but they never gave up. And in the end, they achieved remarkable success and personal fulfillment.

I want the same for you, my dear son. I want you to discover your passions and pursue them with the same dedication and enthusiasm. Start by exploring your interests and talents. What makes your heart race with excitement? What activities bring you the most joy and satisfaction? These are the clues that will lead you to your true passions.

Once you’ve identified your passions, set clear goals for yourself. Create a roadmap for your journey and break it down into manageable steps. Remember that dreams become reality when we set our intentions and work tirelessly to achieve them. It may not always be easy, and you might face challenges along the way, but I know you have the strength and determination to overcome them.

Know that I am here to support you every step of the way. I will provide guidance and encouragement whenever you need it, and I will celebrate your successes, no matter how big or small. Your dreams are my dreams too, and I believe in you with all my heart.

In conclusion, my beloved son, always remember this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Embrace your passions, forge your own path, and never stop chasing your dreams. Your journey will be filled with fulfillment, purpose, and boundless joy.

Letter #4: “Unity in Diversity: Embracing the World”

My dearest Son,

I hope this letter finds you in good spirits, and that you know just how deeply I love and appreciate you. As I sit down to write these words, my heart swells with pride at the person you’ve become. Your kindness, compassion, and the warmth you bring to the world have always been a source of joy in my life.

I wanted to share some thoughts with you about a theme that I hold close to my heart – embracing diversity and fostering unity in the world. It’s a theme that I believe is not just important, but essential for the betterment of our society and our world as a whole.

You see, I’ve been fortunate enough to experience firsthand the beauty of diversity and the richness it brings to our lives. When I was a young adult, I had the opportunity to travel to different countries and immerse myself in various cultures. It was during those travels that I learned how much we can gain from understanding and accepting people from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.

I remember a specific moment when I was in a small village in India, sharing a meal with a family I had just met. Despite the language barrier and our vastly different life experiences, there was an incredible sense of connection and warmth in that moment. It made me realize that beneath our outward differences, we all share a common humanity, a shared longing for love, happiness, and belonging.

Another experience that left a lasting impression on me was when I worked with a diverse team of colleagues from all corners of the world. Our diverse perspectives and approaches brought forth innovative solutions that none of us could have achieved on our own. It was a powerful lesson in the strength of unity in diversity.

My dear son, I want you to know that in a world that sometimes seems divided and polarized, you have the power to make a difference. Embracing diversity and fostering unity begins with empathy, respect, and tolerance. Treat every person you meet with kindness, regardless of their background or beliefs. Seek to understand their perspectives, and in doing so, you’ll build bridges that can transcend any divide.

Remember, it’s the small acts of kindness and understanding that can ripple out and create waves of positive change. Your actions, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can make a profound impact on the world. By being an advocate for unity and inclusion, you can inspire others to do the same.

I’d like to leave you with a quote that has always resonated with me, and I hope it will inspire you as well: “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” These words, spoken by Martin Luther King Jr., remind us that despite our differences, we are all in this together, sailing the same sea of life. Let this be your guiding principle as you continue to embrace diversity and foster unity.

My son, the world is a better place with you in it, and I have no doubt that your journey towards promoting understanding and unity will leave a lasting mark on our world. I am here to support you every step of the way, and I couldn’t be prouder of the compassionate and inclusive individual you’ve become.

Letter #5: “Eternal Learner: Embracing the Joy of Knowledge”

I hope this letter finds you well and thriving in the pursuit of knowledge that has always been at the core of who you are. I want you to know, first and foremost, how incredibly proud I am of the person you are becoming. Your insatiable curiosity and thirst for knowledge have always brought me immense joy, and it’s something that sets you apart in a world where the love of learning can sometimes be overshadowed.

Your unquenchable desire to explore and understand the world around you is a gift, a beacon of light that guides you on a path of lifelong learning. I’ve watched you embark on countless adventures, whether it be through the pages of a book, the melodies of a musical instrument, or the wonders of the natural world. Each time, you embrace the opportunity to learn with open arms, and it fills my heart with boundless happiness.

As you grow older, I want to share with you the beauty and fulfillment that comes from being a lifelong learner. Throughout my own life, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of knowledge. I’ve seen individuals who, despite the challenges they faced, found joy in the pursuit of learning. One such person was your great-grandfather, who, in his late years, became an avid painter, proving that it’s never too late to discover a new passion.

I’ve also had the privilege of meeting lifelong learners who turned their insatiable curiosity into incredible opportunities. They traveled the world, discovered new cultures, and forged connections with people from all walks of life. Their knowledge opened doors they never could have imagined, and it’s a testament to the boundless potential that comes from embracing the joy of acquiring knowledge.

So, my dear son, I want to offer you some guidance on nurturing your love for learning and expanding your horizons. First and foremost, keep reading. Books are the windows to the world, and through them, you can explore places, ideas, and perspectives beyond your wildest imagination. Seek out diverse genres and authors, for they hold the keys to unlocking new worlds within your mind.

Secondly, never stop seeking new experiences. Whether it’s traveling to a foreign land, trying a new hobby, or engaging in thought-provoking conversations, these experiences will enrich your life and broaden your perspective.

Most importantly, stay curious about the world. Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and never settle for easy answers. The pursuit of knowledge is a journey that has no end, and the more questions you ask, the more you’ll discover.

Know that I am here to support you on your educational journey and intellectual pursuits. I wholeheartedly believe in your capacity to achieve great things through knowledge and education. Your potential is boundless, and I can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll accomplish.

In closing, remember the words of Albert Einstein, who once said, “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence.” Embrace the joy of learning, my dear son, for it will light your path and lead you to incredible heights.

With all my love and faith in your intellectual journey,

Letter #6: “Building Bridges: The Art of Meaningful Relationships”

I want to begin this letter by expressing just how deeply I love and admire you. You have grown into such an incredible person, and I couldn’t be prouder of the way you connect with others. Your ability to build and nurture meaningful relationships is truly remarkable, and it warms my heart to witness the kind of person you’re becoming.

I remember when you were just a little boy, and you would make friends with everyone you met. You had this innate gift of making people feel valued and heard, and it was evident even then that you had a special talent for forging connections. I want to share some stories from my own life and the lives of others to emphasize the importance of these bonds.

You know, I’ve always believed that trust is the foundation of any strong relationship. Trust is like the bricks that build the bridge between two hearts. Without it, the bridge becomes shaky and unstable. I learned this lesson the hard way in my own life, but I also learned that trust can be rebuilt with time, patience, and a commitment to open and honest communication.

Empathy is another crucial aspect of nurturing meaningful relationships. It’s the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, to understand their feelings and perspectives. I’ve seen you demonstrate this quality countless times, and it’s one of the reasons why people are drawn to you. Empathy allows us to connect on a deeper level and creates bonds that withstand the test of time.

Communication is the lifeline of any relationship. It’s not just about talking; it’s about actively listening and being present when someone needs you. I’ve learned that the best way to nurture a friendship is to be there when it counts, to lend a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on. Your willingness to be present for your friends is a quality I deeply admire.

Kindness, my dear son, is like the mortar that holds the bricks of trust and empathy together. It’s the small acts of kindness that strengthen our connections with others. Never underestimate the power of a kind word, a smile, or a helping hand. These gestures can make all the difference in someone’s life.

As you continue on your journey of building and nurturing meaningful relationships, please know that I am here to support you every step of the way. These relationships are an essential part of a fulfilling and happy life, and I have faith in your ability to create and maintain them.

In conclusion, always remember that you have the power to build bridges between hearts, and those bridges can lead to the most beautiful and fulfilling connections. There’s a quote I’d like to share with you that sums it up perfectly: “The most beautiful thing in the world is a heart that loves, and a heart that knows how to build bridges.” Keep building those bridges, my son, and watch the beauty of meaningful relationships flourish.

With all my love and faith in your relationships, [Your Name]

Letter #7: “Nature’s Steward: Preserving Our Precious Planet”

I hope this letter finds you well, my beloved child. I want to begin by telling you how much I love and cherish the natural world that surrounds us. The beauty of the Earth, with its lush forests, majestic mountains, and awe-inspiring oceans, fills my heart with wonder and gratitude every single day. It’s a gift that I’ve passed on to you, and I am so proud of the care and concern you have shown for our environment.

Your dedication to environmental stewardship is truly inspiring. I remember the countless hours we spent exploring the woods behind our home when you were a little boy. You would examine every leaf, identify various bird songs, and eagerly share your findings with me. Those moments forged a deep connection to nature within you, and I couldn’t be prouder.

We’ve also had the privilege of meeting people from different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives during our travels. Each encounter has been a lesson in the beauty of diversity and the importance of understanding and accepting others. Remember our trip to that remote village in South America? We were welcomed with open arms, and the warmth of their hospitality left a lasting impression on us. It taught us that the love for the Earth transcends borders, languages, and cultures.

Now, as you grow into a responsible young adult, I want to offer some guidance on how you can further contribute to environmental conservation efforts. It’s vital to understand that every action we take, no matter how small it may seem, has an impact. Reduce waste. Conserve resources. Be mindful of water usage. Make sustainable choices. In short, be a good citizen of the world.

You must know that your dedication to preserving the environment is a noble endeavor. Your actions can make a meaningful difference in the world. You have the power to inspire others to follow your path, to protect the Earth for future generations. Your commitment to being a responsible steward of the planet fills my heart with hope and pride.

In closing, always remember that I love you more than words can express, and I have immense hope for a sustainable future. As we embark on this journey together, let these words from Rachel Carson, a true champion of environmental stewardship, guide you: “The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.”

With all my love,

Letter #8: “Balance and Bliss: Navigating Work and Life”

I want to begin this letter by expressing the deep love and pride I feel for you. It’s hard to put into words just how much admiration I have for your dedication and ambition. Your relentless pursuit of your dreams has been nothing short of inspiring. I’ve watched you work tirelessly, and I want you to know that I am your biggest cheerleader.

As you journey through life, I want to share with you the wisdom I’ve gathered along the way. One of the most crucial lessons I’ve learned is the art of achieving balance and happiness in the pursuit of a fulfilling life. This delicate equilibrium between your career and personal life is something that many strive for but few truly attain.

Let me tell you a story from my own life. There was a time when I was so engrossed in my work that I almost lost sight of the things that truly matter – the warmth of family, the joy of spending time with loved ones, and the simple pleasures that life has to offer. It was only when I took a step back and reevaluated my priorities that I realized the importance of balance.

I’ve also been fortunate to know individuals who have successfully balanced their work and personal lives. One such person is your grandfather. Despite his demanding job, he always made time for family dinners, weekend outings, and cherished moments with us. He taught me that success isn’t just about climbing the corporate ladder; it’s about finding happiness in every aspect of life.

Balance, my dear, is about setting priorities. It’s about recognizing that time is our most precious resource and using it wisely. It’s about nurturing personal relationships, maintaining good health, and taking time to relax and recharge. It’s about ensuring that your career aspirations align with your personal well-being.

I know that balancing work and life can be a daunting challenge, especially in today’s fast-paced world. But I want you to remember that it’s possible. It begins with setting clear boundaries and managing your time effectively. Learn to say no when necessary, and don’t be afraid to delegate. Find ways to stay organized and prioritize your tasks.

Never underestimate the power of nurturing personal relationships. Your loved ones are your support system, your refuge in times of stress, and the source of your deepest joys. Make time for them, cherish the moments you share, and let them be your anchor.

I want you to know that I fully support your pursuit of a balanced and fulfilling life. I believe in your ability to achieve both personal and professional success while maintaining happiness. You have the determination and resilience to find that equilibrium.

In conclusion, always remember that life’s balance is a journey, not a destination. Cherish every moment, find joy in the little things, and live with gratitude in your heart. As you navigate this path, keep in mind the words of Albert Schweitzer: “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”

With all my love and faith in your life’s balance,

Letter #9: “Creative Spirit: Embracing the Artist Within”

I wanted to take a moment to express the deep love and admiration I have for you. Watching you grow and flourish into the incredible person you are today has been an absolute joy and privilege. Your creative talents and passions have always held a special place in my heart, and I want you to know just how much I value them.

From the very beginning, your artistic spirit has shone brightly, and it fills my heart with pride to see you embrace the artist within. Your passion for painting, music, and all forms of creativity is nothing short of inspiring. It reminds me of the incredible power that lies within the human spirit to create and express. Your talents are like a beacon of light in this world, and I believe they have the potential to touch the lives of many.

I want to share a personal story with you. When I was your age, I, too, had dreams of pursuing a creative path, but life took me in a different direction. It’s not that I regret the choices I made, but I’ve always admired those who had the courage to follow their artistic passions, just like you are doing now.

Think of artists like Vincent van Gogh, who faced numerous challenges and rejection but continued to paint with unwavering dedication. His beautiful works of art now bring joy to people all over the world. Or consider the music of Beethoven, who composed some of his most magnificent symphonies despite being deaf. These stories remind us that creativity knows no bounds, and it can triumph over adversity.

Embracing your creativity can bring a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose to your life. It’s about tapping into the unique vision and voice that reside within you and sharing it with the world. Through your art, you have the power to connect with others on a deep, emotional level, and perhaps even inspire them to pursue their own dreams.

Nurturing your creative spirit takes time and effort. It requires practice, dedication, and a willingness to push boundaries. Don’t be afraid to experiment, make mistakes, and learn from them. Great artists have always been those who were unafraid to take risks and explore new horizons. You have that same potential within you.

I want you to know that I wholeheartedly support your artistic pursuits and endeavors. I believe in you and your ability to make a meaningful contribution to the world through your creativity. You have a unique perspective to share, and your voice deserves to be heard.

As you continue on your creative journey, remember these words by Pablo Picasso: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Embrace your inner artist, my dear son, and never let go of that creative spirit that sets your heart on fire.

With all my love and faith in your creative journey,

Letter #10: “Timeless Moments: Cherishing the Gift of Now”

My Darling Son,

I want you to know just how deeply I love and appreciate you. You are a precious gift in my life, and every moment we spend together is a treasure beyond measure. I cherish the time we have together, and I wanted to share some thoughts with you about the importance of living in the present and making the most of each moment.

Do you remember that camping trip we took a few years back? It was a beautiful summer weekend, and we were surrounded by the serene beauty of nature. As we sat by the campfire, I couldn’t help but reflect on how wonderful it was to be there with you, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It was a perfect example of how being present in the moment can create lasting memories.

Time is a fleeting and precious commodity, my son. It rushes past us like a river, and we cannot turn it back or slow it down. That’s why it’s so essential to make the most of every moment we have. The memories we create today will be the stories we tell tomorrow.

I want to encourage you to embrace mindfulness, gratitude, and being fully present in your experiences. When you wake up in the morning, take a moment to appreciate the beauty of a new day. When you spend time with loved ones, put away distractions and be present with them. When you face challenges, remember that they are opportunities for growth and learning.

I support you wholeheartedly in your efforts to cherish the gift of now. Every moment you spend living fully is a moment well-lived. As the saying goes, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” Let those words resonate with you, my dear son, and always remember that the present moment is a precious gift.

I am grateful for the moments we share, and I look forward to creating many more beautiful memories together. You are capable of achieving greatness, and I will always be here to support and love you through every moment of your journey.

These ten examples offer a diverse range of life lessons and values that you can tailor to suit your son’s unique journey. Use them as a starting point to create a letter that will inspire, guide, and support him on his path to a bright and fulfilling future.

Closing Thoughts

In crafting an inspirational letter to your son, you are not just imparting wisdom but also forging a deeper connection with him. Your words can become a source of guidance, support, and unwavering belief in his potential. As a parent, you have the power to inspire him to reach for the stars, overcome challenges, and lead a life filled with love, success, and happiness.

Remember, an inspirational letter is not just a one-time gesture; it’s a legacy, a roadmap for your son’s future. So, take the time to write that heartfelt letter, and watch as it becomes a beacon of light on his journey through life.

8. My Child, I Don’t Ever Want You To Forget How Much I Love You Sometimes Parents don’t make their feelings clear; they assume that their children know of the deep love they feel for them. Yet when misunderstandings occur, and things are left unsaid, it can lead to needless doubts and insecurities. I don’t ever want you to feel insecure, and I want you to remember these words I am telling you now, because they will always be current and never changing… You are the greatest thing that ever happened to me. There is nothing I’d rather see than your smile, and nothing I’d rather hear than your laughter. I am proud of the person you have become, and no matter what happens in your life, I want you to know I love you more than anything and I will always be here for you, forever and always.

9. sons and daughters, they grow up, move away, have their own lives… but in the hearts of their mothers, they are still the “little ones” who they will always hold dear., 10. my son, my wish for you is simple… have the very best life imaginable. live like you will never grow old, laugh giggle, cry if you must… play as hard as you work, make time for the people and things that you adore. when you sleep have the best dreams that will make you wake up with a smile on your face. and that you always, always know that you are loved. this is my wish for you., 11. i adore his smile. i cherish his hugs. i admire his heart. but most of all… i love that he is my son., 12. sons may grow into men and grow out of their toys, but in the hearts of mothers they are still their little boys..

13. Your son will only hold your hand for a little while, but he will hold your heart for a lifetime.

14. my son, i closed my eyes for but a moment and suddenly a man stood where my boy used to be. i may not be able to carry you now in my arms, but i will always carry you in my heart. you have given me so many reasons to be proud of the man you have become, but the proudest moment for me is telling others that you are my son. i love you now and forever., 15. my son is the best thing in my life. i love him with all my heart..

You are Loved.

Why I Am a Good Son to My Parents Essay

Frances Bowen, a respected academic in innovation and sustainability, once said that “to become a thoroughly good man, is the best prescription for keeping a sound mind in a sound body.” Upon reflection, I am convinced that I’ll reap handsome benefits from demonstrating goodness to both my parents ever since I was a small child. This short paper aims to illuminate the reasons why I am a good son to my parents.

Firstly, at a personal level, I believe I am a good son to both my parents as I have never questioned their authority in an irresponsible manner. Although it is true that some parental control can be perceived as demeaning and dictatorial, especially in adolescence, I have always found a way to address my parents’ concerns in a mature and firm manner. When I finished high school, for example, I remember my father standing his ground that I should pursue a course that I never had an interest in.

Although our arguments at home were potentially explosive, I managed to bring on board one of his best friends to make him understand that I needed to be given a chance to choose my own trajectory. Eventually, the problem was settled, and the respect I had earned from my parents still remained intact for not questioning their authority in an irresponsible manner.

Secondly, I have never neglected to abide by the advice received from my parents. Personally, I believe that internalizing parental guidance is fundamental to my personal and professional growth because it is difficult for parents to mislead me as some of my friends would do. I remember one time when my parents advised me to develop a profoundly religious orientation so as to ground my life on sound values and virtues. While most of my friends were demonstrating open revolt to the advice provided by their parents by attending dance parties instead of religious gatherings, I decided to follow my parents’ advice by going to church and practice the teachings as received from our pastoral staff. The result of this undertaking is that my parents, as well as siblings, can now depend on me for moral and spiritual support.

The third reason why I believe I am a good son to both my parents is grounded on the fact that I have been, and will always be, a shining star in academics and extra-curricular activities. I can still remember how happy my mother was when she came to collect my academic reports from middle-grade level through senior high school. She always went with a radiant face knowing too well that she would be called upon to address other parents on motivating students to perform better academically. Similarly, my father always accompanied me in major sports competitions, knowing that I would shine in several field and track events. To date, my parents are very fond of the photographs taken during these ceremonies, and I can tell that these priceless photographs still act as a fundamental source of happiness.

The fourth reason is that I have always been there for my parents in times of need or discomfort. When my mother was diagnosed with a severe but treatable health condition a few years ago, I remember I canceled a holiday I was going with close friends just to be by her side. Upon reflection, I realized that this particular gesture provided my mother with a great deal of moral support. Owing to this and the medical attention provided by doctors, she responded well to treatment and was out of hospital earlier than expected. To date, my parents thank me for standing by them in that trying period.

Although I cannot fully exhaust the reasons why I perceive myself as a good son to my parents, I know that goodness is an asset that has assisted me in laying a solid foundation for success in my future personal, family, and professional endeavors.

Father To Son Poems

The relationship of a son towards both his parents is very complex. A son will likely feel a close bond with his mother, yet see his father as an adversary and competitor. When a son sees how his father interacts with his mother he will either attempt to model his father's behavior or reject his father's example of relationships with women. From the parents' point of view, having a son can be one of the greatest joys they will ever experience but also one of the greatest challenges. Balancing the need to offer freedom to your son while placing appropriate boundaries may be an area of contention.

i love my son essay

I’m letting my son be in love

My son and I are on our way home from preschool when he breaks the news: He is in love. Miss A is a new teacher at his school. She is young, tall, and beautiful and works over at the “baby room.” But he saw her enough on the playground to know that she is the one. He quickly reassures me that he loves me too and I work really hard to repress a giggle. Because love is serious business.

When we get home we immediately have to make a card for Miss A. He picks out a pink marker and a couple of stickers—snakes, insects, butterflies. He is sure Miss A loves those things. Then he sits next to me to dictate the letter: “Miss A, I love you so much. You are so beautiful. I love you very, very much.”

I don’t know what it is that makes me change his words as I write the card. I feel badly about it almost immediately, and feel ashamed for censoring his emotions. But I want him to use those words sparingly, to not reveal too much, too soon. But am I right in this?

My parents never told me they loved me when I was a child.

I never had a doubt in mind that they did. Everything they ever did with their lives happened for me and for my brother: missed careers, late nights at second jobs, shuttling us to private English lessons, spending money they didn’t have on toys and trips to make sure we never wanted for anything. I always knew that they loved and cherished me and that they would sacrifice everything for me in a heartbeat.

But the words “I love you” were never spoken by them or by my grandparents when we were young.

It wasn’t until my mom started to work at the American Embassy in Budapest, surrounded by Americans, that we started to say “I love you” to each other. The way Americans are so free and open with expressing their emotions in words was contagious, and my family caught on. Tentatively, at first, but then with abandon, every time we talked on the phone or saw each other we said “I love you.” We even graduated to the more intense expression in Hungarian, which roughly translates to “I adore you.”

When I first started dating, I was careful with how and when I said “I love you” to my boyfriend. You can only say it for the first time once, and you can never take it back. So I used it sparingly during my dating career, saving it for those times when there was nothing else left to say.

And now I am married to an American who says “I love you” all the time. The first time he told me was in the middle of the night as we reached for each other while adjusting pillows. “Do you love me as much as I love you?” he mumbled in the darkness and I knew even then, half asleep, that I definitely did.

And now, after 13 years of marriage, he still says it all the time: first thing in the morning, when he calls to check in during the day, when he comes home, when I am cooking dinner, when we are bathing our son, when we are watching TV, when I am brushing my teeth, when we go to bed. I love you, I love you, I love you.

Some days I want to tell him to stop saying it. I don’t want him to waste it, to run out of occasions and reasons to say it. And I wonder if expressing such a private emotion with such ease and freedom somehow cheapens it. What happened to showing, not telling?

It’s definitely harder, for sure, to show love with actions only. My husband does that too—I know he loves me from the way he looks at me, the way he lines up my shoes I leave haphazardly in the hallway, the way he does the laundry, makes ice cream runs, the way he smiles and brings me tea when I am sitting in the dark with my headphones on, writing. Of course he loves me. I would know it even if he never said a word to me.

I try to keep up and say it to him just as much, but I still feel guarded about using up my “I love yous.” I am here. I ironed your shirts. I scratched the itchy spot on your back. I made you a cocktail. I let you sleep in Saturday. Of course I love you.

Of course, then there is our son.

I tell him that I love him all the time. It just seems to pour out of me, the words sweet and precious, not even close to expressing what I really feel for him. But I have a compulsion to say it, whisper it into his soft little ears, into his open-mouthed laughter, into his sweaty neck. He says it to me all the time and I know that this is true love.

We teach our son to express other emotions and he is pretty eloquent when he identifies anger, sadness, or disappointment. “Use your words” is a constant mantra in our house. To say “I am angry” instead of shoving his friend. Or to say “it made me sad that you took away my toy” when he wants his toy back from his classmate.

So what is it about his “I love you” letter that makes me squeamish? I tell myself that it’s  because I want to protect him from heartbreak. Sure, there is that, but then I realize that I am also jealous of his freedom in saying exactly what he feels.

He doesn’t know about heartbreak, about hiding true feelings, about putting on an act to look cool. He just knows the truth of those words—that when you feel the feeling, you name it, and say it. Happiness. Anger. Sadness. Love. I wish I were as good at identifying and expressing my emotions every day, but just as I feel like it’s a risk to say “I love you,” it’s also a risk to say “I am disappointed” or “I am scared” or “I am happy.” Do I say those enough? Probably not.

I don’t censor the next card we make for Miss A. I watch my son run up to her on the playground and I think about how quickly this pure, innocent, exhilarating love is lost to the years, to experience, to heartbreak and how lucky I am to get a glimpse of it again through my son’s eyes.

I might be trying to teach him how to show love, but he is teaching me how to use my words.

I love My Family Essay

I love my family deeply and unconditionally. They have always been there for me, supporting me through thick and thin, and I can always count on them to be there for me. Whether it's a difficult moment or a happy one, they make it all the more special just by being a part of it. My family is not just my parents and siblings, but also my extended family and close family friends, all of whom I hold close to my heart. I feel so lucky to have such an incredible support system in my life, and I am grateful for them every day. They are truly a blessing in my life, and I love each and every one of them with all my heart.

I love my family more than anything in this world. They have always been my source of comfort and support, and I cannot imagine my life without them. My family consists of my parents, my siblings, my grandparents, my aunts, uncles, and cousins, and each of them holds a special place in my heart.

Growing up, my family was always there for me, no matter what. When I was feeling down, my parents would listen and offer words of encouragement. When I was happy, they celebrated with me. They provided me with a stable and loving home, and they gave me all the opportunities I needed to succeed.

As I have grown older, my love for my family has only deepened. I have come to appreciate their constant support and unwavering love even more. I have also come to realise how important it is to have a strong family bond, and how lucky I am to have one.

One of the things I love most about my family is how diverse and unique each member is. My parents are complete opposites, yet they complement each other perfectly. My siblings have their own individual personalities, and I love learning about their quirks and interests. My cousins are always a source of laughter and joy, and my grandparents always have wise words of advice to share.

I love my family with all my heart, and I am proud to be a part of such a strong and supportive unit. Over the years, my family has faced many challenges and obstacles, but we have always managed to come out on top, thanks to the love and support we have for one another.

A Difficult Time

One of the most difficult situations we faced as a family was when my younger brother was diagnosed with a serious illness. It was a trying time for all of us, and we were all scared and worried about his health. However, my family rallied around him and did everything we could to support him. My parents took turns staying by his bedside in the hospital, and my siblings and I did our best to keep his spirits up by visiting him and bringing him treats and games.

Through it all, my brother never lost hope or his positive outlook on life. He continued to fight, and with the love and support of our family, he made a full recovery. It was a difficult time, but it brought us all even closer together, and I am proud of the way we all came together to support one another.

These experiences have only strengthened the bond I have with my family. I have come to appreciate the love and support we provide for one another even more, and I am grateful for the memories we have created together. I am proud to be a part of such a loving and supportive family, and I know that no matter what life throws our way, we will always be there for one another.

Financial Difficulties

I remember one instance where my family came together to overcome a difficult situation. It was a few years ago, when my family was facing financial difficulties. My parents had both lost their jobs, and we were struggling to make ends meet. We were all feeling the pressure, and it seemed like the situation was hopeless.

However, my family refused to give up. We came together and started brainstorming ways to make ends meet. My siblings and I started looking for part-time jobs, and my parents started selling some of their belongings to make ends meet. We also started cutting back on expenses, and we all made sacrifices to help the family get back on its feet.

It was a difficult and trying time, but we all pulled together and worked as a team. With hard work and determination, my parents were able to find new jobs, and our financial situation improved. We were able to pay our bills, put food on the table, and start saving for the future.

I am so proud of my family for coming together during that difficult time. We proved that with hard work and determination, we could overcome anything. We also learned the value of coming together as a family and supporting one another during difficult times. This experience brought us even closer together, and I will always cherish the memories we created during that time.

How Would You Describe Your Child?

  • February 17, 2016

Picture of Foxy

My son’s 4th-grade teacher asked me to describe my son in “a million words or less.” I was tempted to send her  my coffee table book about him , along with a bottle of wine and the words “Good luck.”

Ultimately, I decided that post didn’t really do my son enough justice, so I wrote something new. I kept it under a million words, though. Here’s what I sent the teacher:

Colin is a sweet, loving, gentle boy. But he doesn’t fit into a neat little box.

He still holds my hand, hugs me, and tells me that he loves me every day. He does the same with my husband.

Home is his very favorite place to be.

He is crazy smart , and his memorization skills rival those of Rain Man. At the same time, he prefers to be lazy if given the opportunity. He has been known to put forth the minimum effort required. He sometimes skims over directions. He works furiously (but not always meticulously) so he can return to “fun” things.

Colin is incredibly sensitive. He does not like to be made fun of, be made an example of, or be the center of attention. He has a hard time distinguishing between someone laughing with him and at him.

He loves dogs. And cats. And goats. And every animal really. But especially dogs. He told me that if he had millions of dollars, he’d open an animal sanctuary and assign a butler to each animal. He’d also buy video games and candy, but he thought of the animals first.

He loves to read . But he forgets that fact sometimes. It’s that minimum effort thing again.

Colin doesn’t like competition. He doesn’t like it when winners gloat. Or when people lose. He wants everyone to win. Unless it’s his sister. Then he’ll be the first in line to take her down.

He doesn’t like change, new experiences, or anything foreign to him. He probably won’t volunteer to do something in the class that he hasn’t done before. He needs to watch and process things before he feels comfortable participating.

He’s a quiet boy. Until he is comfortable. Then it’s hard to shut him up.

Colin is the opposite of an adrenaline junkie. He doesn’t like roller coasters , shots , scary movies, when people get in trouble, vegetables, plane rides, or really anything fearsome.

He’s experienced a lot of death in his nine short years: a great uncle, an uncle , four cats, and two dogs. He takes loss pretty hard, but grieves openly and healthily.

He has an aversion to physical activity and has never once voluntarily participated in any team sport. Miss Willow is some kind of sorceress because he actually enjoys PE.

He loves computers, video games, and the Internet. We hope to channel that passion and turn him into the next Bill Gates.

Colin is an introvert and needs alone time to recharge. He will remove himself from a group of people in the middle of a gathering. He will walk along the edges of the playground during recess. He will retreat into himself when he becomes overwhelmed. And that’s okay with us.

He loves imaginary play. He talks to himself and acts out all sorts of scenes in his mind. When I punished him and took away all of his favorite toys, he told me, “Mom. You may have cancelled fun today and taken away all of my toys, but there’s one toy you can’t take away.” And then he pointed to his head.

He loves creating art and writing stories. He has already written several comic books. (But he prefers technology.)

He has a strong sense of fairness and justice. He doesn’t like when people cheat, when people don’t get a turn, or when things don’t go his way.

Colin is funny . And he loves being silly. His sense of humor can be off the wall .

He’s extremely curious about the world. He asks a lot of questions. He wants to know the answers to everything. For my own sanity, I showed him the magic that is Google very early on.

He’s very rule oriented and very black and white . We’re working hard to help him see shades of grey (not the movie), not correct others when they make a mistake, and be more flexible when things don’t go as planned or anticipated.

He’s quirky. And a little socially awkward. I’ve got money on him growing up to be an engineer.

Colin will wear pajamas in public, mismatched clothing, and finger nail polish. He likes what he likes , and he doesn’t really care what anyone else thinks. He is totally unaffected by other people’s opinions and standards. I’m going to miss this quality when/if he outgrows it.

He can be a sneaky little #@$& ! He steals cookies. He started his own YouTube channel (behind our backs—and was devastated when he got caught). He would never do that at school, but I think it’s interesting because it shows he can break rules and take risks despite his sometimes-rigid personality.

Colin is a sweet, loving, gentle boy. We hope you enjoy him as much as we do.

How would you describe your child in a million words or less?

Oh, thank you for this glimpse. What a lovely way to start my morning.

Thank YOU for reading. xoxo

Oh come on…now I have to do this too… loved it.

Thank you! And if it makes you feel any better, now I have to do this for my daughter (whose teacher did not request one).

That was really lovely.

Thank you so much. xo

It sounds so much like my George. School was hard for him. He’s eighteen now.

I bet George is a fabulous adult. 🙂

Wow – I could have copied and pasted when my son was in junior school. Beautiful description. Did you get a response from his teacher?

Thank you so much! His teacher is wonderful, and we have discussed my quirky little guy a number of times. 🙂

I love this. I have three boys and I HATE it when their teachers send home the little piece of paper for me to tell them about my son. I can’t fit all that they are and all that we adore about them on those little pages.

EXACTLY. We need at least a couple of pages. 🙂

That is so lovely. My son is every bit as complicated as Colin, but I’m never allowed to tell the whole story in the 10 minute slot I get on Parents’ night. The school can barely handle the juxtaposition of incredibly smart and dyslexia, let alone his other 999 colors.

Thanks for sharing.

“colors” I LOVE that! 🙂

That was beautiful…your son sounds like an awesome human being.

Thank you! And I think he is. I’m not biased at all. 😉

*sniff*. My 19 year old son will be leaving for Marine bootcamp next month. I think I’m going to do this for him. If I can stop crying long enough….

That would be an awesome gift. xoxo

I bet Colin will really appreciate this post when he grows up. It’s a lovely snapshot of him as a fourth grader. I’d consider myself very lucky if I had a mother who’d taken the time to describe my personality, passions, and how I relate in the world in such a loving and articulate way.

I hope so. But I’m putting money in the therapy jar just in case.

Add this to the book!! 🙂

What a gorgeous tribute to your son! Thanks for sharing.

Thank YOU for reading. And commenting! xo

I am one of your quiet followers but this was just so lovely I had to comment.

Thank you so much for being here. And for commenting. xoxo

I loved the “million words or less” question from teachers! (They adore responses like yours, by the way) Here was mine~ http://dayleefix.blogspot.com/2014/08/hump-day-and-even-better-back-to-school.html?m=1

Life of each person is a collection of memories, current affairs and expectations of what will happen in future. Most of the events can hardly be remembered, but some of them are carried through the whole life. When looking back to my past, I consider the birth of my son to be the most long-awaited, gripping, and important thing.

A little creature that only weighted 9 lbs has absolutely changed by life. Tahjha’s birth has converted both mine and my husband’s world into something more than just a routine. From the very moment I realized that I have created another person, the whole idea of living on this planet was turned upside-down. Yusefiman Wright, my husband, has doubled his attention to me and praised our child, and I have never seen him so happy and alert. It is astonishing how a little creature like that influenced our lives. Though, many years have passed since Tahjha was born, I still remember that very day clearly. The sun was shining brightly; the air was still and humid. It seemed like nature was awaiting her birth together with me and my husband. There was a moment when I realized that someone was there with me in the hospital room when I was being prepared for giving birth. It may sound superstitious, but a bird flew inside the room when I was actually in the middle of delivering the baby. It seemed that only I was aware of its presence, but it was so strange and at the same time beautiful that I felt no more pain and even smiled. The bird was soon gone, but the feeling of supernatural stays with me till now. The delivery was not easy though, as far as the baby appeared to be quite big and I was suffering from great pains, due to this reason. The doctor was forcing me to push again and again, but for whatever reason the baby got stuck in the birth canal. Later on, I was told that this happened, because the baby was quite big. My mother, who was present in the room, was really nervous and that was only worsening the situation. Apparently the baby’s head was positioned in the wrong way and was not able to go through the birth canal. I was suffering terribly for nearly an hour giving birth vaginally. My doctor stated that such situations commonly happen, but I was already giving up. It was my husband, who was really the one to help and assist me emotionally. Though the pain was awful, I was not offered any type of pain relief, as it might have affected the child. The midwives did a really good job answering my questions and helping me to stay conscious. They were talking about everything they were doing, which kept we confident and distracted me from the pain. Finally, he was born, a creation of purity and innocence, and combination of love and affection.

Needless to say, my daily schedule was completely ruined. I had to rearrange or cancel many appointments and plans. Even my days off were not those carefree moments of doing nothing and being a coach potato anymore. I finally acquired a constant and solid goal in my life. I realized how purposeless my life had been before the birth of my dear son. I was engaged in a rat race of the city, not knowing why and what I am struggling for. My son gave me a true vision of the present and the future. Indeed, I had to spend all my time with him: nursing, helping, guiding, and putting him on the right track. The precious moments of his first steps, his first word, and his first smile will never fade away from my heart and mind. My husband revealed himself as being a true man who was always ready to assist me in any venture. Our child became a key stone in our relationship. Both his physical and financial aid made it possible for us to obtain the best goods and services needed for our precious kid.

Undoubtedly, the first weeks and months after the birth of Tahjha were extremely troublesome. I was overloaded with house work, as far as having a child at home turns the whole house into a big and never-ending mess. I have to admit the fact that I regretted getting pregnant after several sleepless nights, when my son screamed and cried till early morning with no particular reason. However, seeing Tahjha growing up, acknowledging his love and affection for me and my husband, I forgot all the troubles and stress that accompanied his early childhood. Truly speaking, with the birth of my son I have been given a new lease of life, a new boost to continue living and struggling for better life.

It is true that hundreds of experiences influence a person during a lifetime; however, only a few of them can really engrave in his heart and be remembered forever. I was lucky enough to give birth to my son and be able to raise, teach, and take care of her. This was truly the best experience of my life and it should never be forgotten!

I wanted my son to reject masculine stereotypes. Then he fell in love with tractors

When Jay Deitcher's son entered toddlerhood, he developed a fascination with toys the author had deemed too masculine, like tractors.

After turning 2 years old, my son, Avishai, started demanding that he only wear tractor shirts, and my mind spiraled into darkness. I catastrophized worst-case scenarios, imagining a world where he fell for everything stereotypically manly. I envisioned him on a football field, barreling through mega-muscled opponents. Imagined him waxing a sports car on a warm summer day. I have always judged other guys who seemed boxed in by masculinity, but 3 ½  years ago, when I became a stay-at-home dad , my bias skyrocketed.

My son was born in Albany, New York, on the bedroom floor of the apartment I shared with my wife. Minutes after his arrival, we took turns cuddling him against our bare chests. While the midwife and her assistant cleaned up, my wife, always one to joke, even soon after giving birth, bragged that she had a connection to our new baby that I could never attain because men couldn’t bond with babies like women could.

The author with his wife and one of their children, a son named Avishai.

Her comment stabbed into me, but I feared she was right. To me, femininity was connected to empathy and kindness while masculinity equated to being frigid. Men didn’t hug. Men didn’t say I love you. Men were angry. Aggressive. Inept as parents. I became determined. I was going to create a bond stronger than any parent had ever achieved, but I told myself that to do so I needed to distance myself from anything deemed masculine.

To me, femininity was connected to empathy and kindness while masculinity equated to being frigid.

I immediately cut my hours at my social work gig, taking on the role of caregiving full time. It made sense because my wife made more money and I was accustomed to being around kids; it was what I did for a living. Every day I fed Avishai and cuddled him and soothed him. We co-slept , and he snoozed with his head resting on my chest, listening to the rhythm of my heartbeat. I began attending mommy-and-me playgroups and bristled when other caregivers made jokes about me providing daddy day care. I held resentment that so much of society acted as if dads couldn’t care for their kids (therefore putting pressure on women for the brunt of the caregiving) — but I too looked at dads that way. I shuddered at jokes about men being incapable of figuring out how to work a diaper, yet I felt most couldn’t. I became even more of an avid stereotyper: I grimaced at anyone driving a Ford car, the John Wayne of automobiles. I hated men who wore plaid. Felt ill if someone mentioned a wrench or another tool. When my mom-in-law bought Avishai a coverall with footballs on it, I shoved it into the depths of his closet, never to be found.

"I paraded him through the park while he rolled his baby doll down the sidewalk in its stroller," Deitcher writes.

When my mom-in-law bought Avishai a coverall with footballs on it, I shoved it into the depths of his closet, never to be found.

It wasn’t as if I’d grown up with a negative example of fatherhood. My dad was an interior decorator, working 60 hours a week at the family business: Deitcher’s Wallpaper and Design Center. Outwardly, my father filled the role of man of the house, but inside, my mom made most of the family decisions. My father was never afraid to blur boundaries. I was hugged frequently and told I love you. He, too, despised sports, but loved watching Hallmark movies with my mom. After his employees started selling home-manicure sets as a side hustle, my father spent nights sitting at the kitchen counter beautifying his nails.

Avishai with his grandfather, the author's father.

In many ways, I am an extension of my father, further pushing what is acceptable for men. Once my son could walk, I paraded him through the park while he rolled his baby doll down the sidewalk in its stroller. I felt accomplished because he mirrored being a caretaker.

But then came the tractors. It started with YouTube. On days I was especially drained, I’d sit Avishai in front of the TV and click on “Little Baby Bum.” He fell in love with the tractor songs, and I was so worn, I didn’t care. When he asked to watch clips of construction equipment, I mindlessly pressed play. But when he demanded the shirts, I felt like I failed him. I pride myself on blurring gender lines . I wanted him to, also.

I had to make a choice: buy him clothes with pictures of heavy machinery on them and make the kid happy, or force him to wear shirts emblazoned with fuzzy animals to appease me.

The author's son is all smiles aboard a fire truck.

As the supposed heir to the family business, I stocked shelves and mixed paint throughout my teenage years, but my father acted as if the job ran in our family’s veins, so he never gave decent directions for how to do any aspect of the gig. Nothing came naturally to me, and my father stared over my shoulder as I worked, frustrated because I measured window treatment dimensions differently than he would have. My body spiraled into panic any time I attempted manual labor.

When I left for college, I swore I’d never hang a picture frame again. My father accepted I wasn’t interested in taking over the store, but he tried to push me towards degrees he felt were rational. He made it clear that my passion for art was just a hobby, not a career. So I enrolled in a computer science program, then switched to a business program. It took years of me faltering before my father gave up on directing me — something clicked in him and he began supporting me in following my passions. And then I discovered exactly what I was supposed to be. When I became a stay-at-home dad, my father kvelled, the Yiddish word for bursting with pride.

The author and his son as a baby.

Although I like to believe I’m a special guy because I’m a stay-at-home dad who breaks through gender boxes, I’m not an anomaly. In his time, my father redefined what it meant to be a man. And today’s generation is pushing it further. Fathers are increasingly taking on previously gendered roles including cleaning, grocery shopping and cooking. The number of stay-at-home fathers is on the rise, according to the Pew Research Center . Research also shows that dads are more involved in child care and that they see parenting as central to their identity.

I had difficulty understanding my son’s interest in tractors, and at first, I tried to nudge Avishai toward different videos and clothing. But then I remembered how hard it was for my father to trust me to follow my passions, and the way we connected after he finally did. I took on being an at-home father because I wanted to bond with my son, and I realized that meant I needed to let him discover his own interests. He had to define his own identity, not influenced by my own bias of what I deemed to be too masculine.

Deitcher leaning into the tractor life.

I started taking joy in his joy. He radiates wearing his shirts emblazoned with diggers and dozers and excavators. At 3 ½ years old, he can name dozens of types of tractors (I always thought there was only one). He makes up quasi-gibberish tractor stories, sings quasi-gibberish tractor songs. Together, we clean the living room: He uses his tractors to put all his toys away. Sometimes my dad comes over and we drive tiny plastic machinery from room to room. My son beams. My dad beams. I was a young, single mom when I had my son, and I thought I was missing out on my 20s. Now, I'm glad I had him when I was younger.

  • When I had my son, I worried I might miss out on my 20s.
  • There were trips I wanted to take, and I knew it would be easier to date if I wasn't a parent.
  • However, I realized that my time with him was precious, and I'm glad I had him when I was young.

Insider Today

I found out I was pregnant with my son just before turning 26. At the time, I didn't have my own place, I worked part-time, and I had about $300 in my bank account. I had no assets aside from owning my car, and I was not in an ideal position to have a baby .

Back then, I didn't have any other friends who were parents, and I felt that I just wasn't ready to become a mom. But now that my son is 10 and I've made it over the halfway mark to him being 18, I'm actually really glad I had him when I was younger .

I reminded myself to be present

When my son was little, sometimes I did feel like I was missing out. But when he was born, I was filled with this intrinsic wisdom that his stages wouldn't last forever. Reminding myself to slow down, be present, and enjoy his younger ages always helped me get over the fear of missing out on doing things I might otherwise have been doing if I wasn't a parent.

When there were times that I wished I could date easily or take a big trip, I told myself that those things could come later. What I didn't want to miss out on was him.

I was in better shape

I just turned 37. While I know I'm still young, I'm definitely starting to feel my age. One recent morning I woke up, and my hip hurt for no apparent reason. I look to my close friends, who are experiencing similar aches and pains, and wonder how they're dealing with chasing around toddlers on top of it. Looking back on how much I accomplished as a young single mom, I'm not sure I would have been able to do the same if I had a new baby at this age.

No one is ever ready

One thing I've observed is that no matter what age you are or where you are in your life, no one is ever truly "ready" to become a parent. It's something you figure out as it's happening, and that's exactly what happened to me. During the duration of my pregnancy and my son's first year, I grew up really fast. He made me want to be the best that I could be, because I wanted what was best for him, and so I figured out the challenges as they came along.

I only figured out what I wanted to do because I had to

I don't think I would have figured out what I wanted to do with my life if I didn't have my son when I did. After having him, I realized two things. The first was that I wanted to show him it is possible to have a job you enjoy.

The second was that I wanted to be available to spend time with him before and after school, as well as on the weekends. So I finished my degree and became a teacher, which allowed me to be home when he was. I knew my life as a writer would come in time when he was older, and I had all of those summers off.

As a parent, everything looks different

When I became a mom, I saw everything differently. As I watched my son grow up, I saw the world from his perspective — how magnificent everything was, but also how difficult. My attitude toward my upbringing changed as well, and I was able to empathize with my dad, who was also a single parent. Becoming a parent helped me feel connected to other people, because I saw that what people want for themselves and their children is often the same.

When my son graduates from high school, I'll be 44. If I still want to, I'll be able to take those big trips or pursue careers I wouldn't have been able to while he was young. I once thought waiting to do these things later was a sacrifice, but I know I see it as a blessing. When my son is grown, I'll still be fairly young and fit, but I'll also be wiser than I was in my 20s. The lessons I'll have learned from parenting will actually enrich the experiences that I've put on hold.

Speaking Russian in America

An illustration with nesting dolls, a sunflower, Cyrillic script and a tank.

By Sasha Vasilyuk

Ms. Vasilyuk is the author of the novel “Your Presence Is Mandatory.” She wrote from San Francisco.

In January 2022, I was planning a summer trip to Ukraine and Russia for my 4-year-old son and me.

I spent half of my childhood in Ukraine and half in Russia before moving to the United States when I was a teenager. When I became a parent, my one, obsessive goal — as a mother raising a child in America with a man who spoke only English — was to teach my son Russian. It wasn’t about his future résumé; it was because Russian forms such a deep-rooted part of my immigrant identity that I couldn’t imagine talking to my child in another language.

I spoke to him exclusively in Russian and found him a Russian-language day care. For three years, his Russian was better than his English. But when he turned 4 and made English-speaking friends, it started to slip. He started inserting English words in otherwise Russian sentences and talking to himself in English while playing alone.

Then, after a Christmas break with his American grandma, he spoke to me in English. I panicked. I decided he needed a full immersion as soon as possible.

A visit to Ukraine and Russia would allow him to see that his mother’s native language wasn’t a quirk of hers but something normal for millions of people. I told him he’d eat piroshki , see the circus and finally meet his cousins in Kyiv and Moscow.

One month later, Russian forces poured into Ukraine.

I did not immediately tell my son a war had started. I believe in telling children the truth, but I couldn’t even explain to myself why one of my homelands was invading the other, why my cousins in Kyiv were hiding in bomb shelters, why my cousins in Moscow were fleeing the country. Maybe I’d tell him once I had a better grasp of what was happening or, better yet, when it was over. I was certain that it wouldn’t — couldn’t — last long.

For two days, I called family in Ukraine in the early morning, before he woke up, and reserved my tears for nights. On the third day, we were hiking in a park when two American women approached and asked what language we were speaking. When I said, “Russian,” their faces contorted, and one of them said, “Oops,” as if they’d caught me doing something wrong.

If I’d been on my own, I might have said that the Russian language, spoken by many in Ukraine and other former Soviet republics where Russian was mandated, is not an indicator of political or moral affiliation with the actions of Vladimir Putin. But I wasn’t on my own, and I didn’t want my son to see his mother having to defend herself. We hurried on down the hill. When he asked me why that lady had said “Oops,” I said I had no idea.

Afterward, I grew self-conscious at stores and playgrounds and tried not to speak Russian to him too loudly.

One of Mr. Putin’s bogus reasons for the invasion was to protect Russian speakers in Ukraine, even though many Russian speakers — like my family — had felt perfectly safe in their bilingual country. As tanks rolled toward Kyiv, I thought about the effort and resources I’d expended teaching my son a language that was being used as an excuse for violence. I’d entangled him in a mess that he did not have to be a part of.

Many people in Ukraine vowed to stop speaking Russian, but that didn’t feel like the right solution for us. I decided to carry on as we were and say nothing about the war until and unless he asked.

I read articles by psychologists that recommended never lying to your children, even about distressing events; they cautioned that it’s important to dole out the truth in a limited, age-appropriate manner. I found an article that said to “ask yourself whether you are lying to benefit your kids or lying more to benefit yourself.” I had a hard time separating the two. I knew that compared with my relatives in Russia and Ukraine, I was lucky to have the choice to lie at all.

I’ve read reports of parents in war zones going to extreme lengths to hide the brutality of war from their children, even as they live it. Part of me thinks that this merciful lying is a biological instinct, that it’s somehow better for the survival of the species to allow our children to believe the world is better than it is.

But it can also be cultural. Soviet history, for example, contains a lot of private grief under a gilded collective exterior. My grandfather was a prisoner of war in World War II. He hid it from us his whole life because in the twisted moral code of the Soviet Union, P.O.W.s were considered almost traitors . My family learned of his secret only after his death, when we discovered a confession letter in which he begged the K.G.B. not to tell us because he didn’t want to traumatize us with his shame. I never really understood that until Russia invaded.

As the war dragged on, the summer of our planned trip came and went. My son didn’t notice, and I thanked his child brain’s nebulous sense of time for sparing me the need to explain. That November, he turned 5. I increased his dose of Russian-language cartoons and started to teach him to read in Russian.

Then one day he came home from day care and asked, “Mama, is there a war in Ukraine?”

A mix of panic and relief washed over me. We went to the world map on the wall of his bedroom, designed by a friend from Kyiv. I showed him the outline of Ukraine, with its little cartoons of borscht and onion-domed churches. I said something about tanks, about how terrible war was. He nodded silently. I kept it limited and age-appropriate. I also omitted a crucial piece: He did not ask me who started the war, and I didn’t tell him. I could not bring myself to volunteer that it was Russia.

A few months later, I saw my son make a beeline for a Russian-speaking family on the beach. When I caught up, they were asking him — and then me — where we were from. Their tone was urgent, insistent. They needed to know we weren’t from Russia; they had recently arrived in the United States from Kherson, Ukraine. As soon as I heard “Kherson,” I sent my son off to play. Their son was just a few years older, and he seemed to be traumatized, alternating between staring into space and angry outbursts at his grandma. I listened to how the family had survived a brutal six-month Russian occupation and watched my son play in the distance.

Let his little brain know about suffering. But not about Russia’s betrayal. Not yet.

Cameron Mathison shared a tender moment with his daughter Leila as she prepared to head off to her senior prom.

On April 28, the All My Children alum, 54, posted a series of photos on Instagram celebrating the 17-year-old as she was all dressed up for her big night out.

"Senior Prom🥹," he began his caption, accompanied by photos of the father-daughter duo posing in front of some greenery outdoors.

"Leila, I want you to know that you are always on my mind and in my heart," the actor continued. "I’m so grateful for every moment I get to spend with you, and remember no matter where life takes you always know that you are loved beyond measure."

In the photos, the actor embraced Leila as she wore a black prom dress with lace detailing and an open back, completing her look with a black and white corsage and an elegant updo. He sported a plain black T-shirt and khaki pants.

"You are such an incredible daughter and I’m so proud of the person you have become," he added. "Love dad❤️."

"The last photo I may have a tear or two 😭," he added as a disclaimer.

Mathison and his wife, Vanessa — who shared the screen on General Hospital — have two children together , a son named Lucas whom they welcomed in April 2003 and Leila, who was born in July 2006.

Vanessa also chimed in on her husband's post, writing that she and Mathison are "lucky beyond belief ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️."

The Dancing with the Stars alum often shares some of his favorite moments with his kids on social media. Back in December, he posted a selfie of himself and Leila spending the day at a meditation center in Los Angeles.

"What a beautiful way to spend the weekend," he wrote alongside the photo. "Incredible teachings, meditations, and people ... So grateful for this center helping people be happy from the inside out☺️❤️🙏🏼."

In March, he also posted photos of himself and Lucas , 21, spending a day out on the town in L.A., stopping by a coffee shop, enjoying a plate of oysters and taking a drive in a vintage blue and white-striped Mustang. In his caption, the actor quoted Winnie the Pooh: "A day spent with you is my favorite day. So today is my new favorite day."

Over the past several years, the host has also been candid about his health problems,  revealing in September 2019 that he had renal cell carcinoma, or kidney cancer . A week later, he underwent partial nephrectomy surgery, a difficult procedure where doctors remove a tumor while only taking out a small portion of the kidney.

Just three weeks later, Mathison revealed on a red carpet that he was already feeling better, and that he had been declared cancer-free.

"I'm feeling really, really well," he said at the time, speaking with Extra . "It's three weeks out of surgery and I honestly didn’t even think I would be feeling up to coming here. The recovery has been great, the surgery went really well, the prognosis is very optimistic."

In December, he celebrated four years of being cancer-free .

"I had my 4-year cancer checkup, so I'm healthy, cancer-free... doing great," he told  Entertainment Tonight  at the  2023 Daytime Emmy Awards . "I'm stronger than I've ever been. I've got more energy than I've ever been. I worked really hard at it."
