Andrew Childress

  • Bahasa Indonesia

In this tutorial, we'll look at how to make animated PowerPoint presentation designs from a template. This includes how to create animated slides in PowerPoint, as well as other animation in PowerPoint presentation designs.

Animations in PowerPoint can really draw your audience's attention to elements of a presentation. You don't have to use separate apps to create animation effects. PowerPoint offers some of the easiest, point and click tools to add animation to your presentations.

There are two key types of animation in Microsoft PowerPoint that you'll learn to use in this tutorial:

  • Object animations , which are individual items like, text or shapes going in motion on a slide.
  • Animated transitions , the effects that play when you move from one slide to the next in PowerPoint.

In this tutorial, we'll learn how to create an animated PowerPoint presentation with a template. You'll learn how to add both key types of animations to a presentation. We'll also look at how to make animated slides  in PowerPoint from a template.

Tips and Tricks for Making Animations in PowerPoint

Not sure which animations are best for your project? When making animations in PowerPoint, it's important to know when to add them and when to keep it simple. Check out these simple tips and tricks for your next PowerPoint presentation.

how to create a animated presentation

1. General Tips for Using Animation in PowerPoint

Just because you  can  animate everything in PowerPoint doesn't mean that you should. We've all sat through presentations with distracting animations. When making animations in PowerPoint, be strategic.

Animations serve to complement the content and draw the user's eye to key elements. The PowerPoint animation effects shouldn't be the focus of a slide. Your content should be. Here are key tips to add animations to your PowerPoint presentations tastefully:

  • Limit yourself to one to two key PowerPoint animations on each slide to avoid distracting the audience.
  • Use animations to draw attention to key points on the slide instead of applying them to random elements.
  • Use simple PowerPoint animation effects like fade or dissolve animations that are less distracting than flashier options.

how to create a animated presentation

With that in mind, let's dive into adding PowerPoint animations in a presentation:

2. Add PowerPoint Object Animations

Object animations  bring elements onto or off a PowerPoint slide. They're a big part of making animations in PowerPoint. You can use these effects to reveal key points or draw attention to a specific part of the slide. Imagine leaving the conclusion for each slide hidden until you press a button on your remote, for example.

Let's explore how to make animated PPT presentation designs stand out with object animations.

To experiment with how to create animated PPT object animations, we'll use this PowerPoint template. Download it now if you'd like to follow along. Otherwise, these steps will apply to any existing PowerPoint presentation or template.

powerpoint template

To get started with object animations, start off by clicking on an element on your slide. You can choose an element like a text box, image, or even a shape you've drawn on the slide.

Now, click on the  Animations  tab. This menu makes it easy to choose an animation to add to an object.

On the Animations tab, you can simply click on one of the animation thumbnails to apply it to a selected object. Download this PowerPoint Design template on Envato Elements.

Click on the part of the slide that you want to animate. Again, this could be a text box, image, chart, or any object that you can select on the slide.

Once you've got an object selected, simply click on one of the animation thumbnails. PowerPoint will play a preview of the selected animation and you'll see the object come onto the slide.

In this screenshot, you can see that I've selected a text box, in this PowerPoint template and chosen the Fly In effect to add to the text box.

Now, simply click on the PowerPoint animation that you want to add to an object. I recommend choosing a simple animation effect like Fade  or  Appear.  Keeping an animation simple will bring it onto a slide naturally and not distract the audience.

3. Sequence Object Animations in PowerPoint

If you've added many PowerPoint animations to the same slide, you might want to re-order the object animations. For instance, your images might come onto a slide before the title appears.

In this case, it helps to resequence animations . To reorder animations, switch to the  Animations  tab on PowerPoint's ribbon. Then, find the  Animation  Pane  button and click on it to open a panel that shows all the animations on the slide.

On the right side, you'll see the  Animation Pane  open. In it you'll see a list of animations that'll play on the slide.

In the example below, you can see two animations on the side, each of which represents an object's animation.

The numbers next to objects represent the order that the animations will play in this PowerPoint slide design.

To reorder the animations, simply drag and drop them in the list on the Animation Pane . Click Play All  to preview the animations once they're reordered.

4. Add PowerPoint Slide Transitions

Now, let's talk about how to create animated slides in PowerPoint. Slide transitions show as effects when you move from one slide to the next. These are another form of PowerPoint animation you can apply with relative ease.

To apply a slide transition, start off by selecting a slide and clicking on Transitions on PowerPoint's ribbon. With a slide selected, simply click on one of the animation thumbnails on the ribbon to apply it to the current slide. You'll see a preview of the active transition animation play.

The star icon next to the slide thumbnail shows slides in this PowerPoint template that have transition effects applied.

Notice that slides that have animations show a small icon in the sidebar. So, you can easily identify the slides that you've applied transitions to.

On the Transitions tab on PowerPoint's ribbon, simply click on the thumbnail for an animation to apply it to a slide, as shown in this PowerPoint design template.

There are three other key options that you can set on the ribbon for each slide's transition:

  • Sound . Choose a drop-down option to play a sound when the slide advances.
  • Duration . This describes the duration (speed) that the animation plays. You can set a longer duration in seconds for the animation to play more slowly or shorten it for a faster transition.
  • Advance Slide . Instead of advancing the slide by clicking through the presentation, tick the After option to automatically change slides after a certain amount of time.

The principles of limiting PowerPoint animation and effects are the same for slide transitions. Use them sparingly and stick to the simple dissolve or fade effects.

Make Better PowerPoint Animations and Presentations

So far, we've tackled the basics of PowerPoint animation and how to create animated PPT elements. Let's take these ideas and explore them in a customizable PowerPoint presentation. Here's the template design we'll use in this walkthrough:

stylish PowerPoint slide design

You can download this template and follow along. Or apply these techniques to any PowerPoint template design you prefer.

1. Start With a Strong Introduction

Above all, you'll want to start off by showcasing your organization. For example, if you're going to recruit employees to join your company, it helps to give them background on what it is that you do. Trying to sell an idea to investors? They'll need to know what you're about and why to trust you.

Take a look at this sample slide from this professional PowerPoint design template . Where do you think animation would be an appropriate addition?

A simple fade in could be a classy addition here. Think about this in contrast to something overly busy, like every element here flying in from a different direction. That would be really distracting!

Start your PowerPoint presentation with a strong introduction. Stock photo from Envato Elements.

2. Introduce Your Topic Clearly and Concisely

Organization and clarity often go hand in hand. When considering how to make animated PowerPoint presentation designs, start with a simple layout. Less is often more. Once your content has been laid out in a clear and easy to understand way, you can consider making animations in PowerPoint.

Here's another example slide from this PowerPoint presentation. We could try some object animations here. For example, perhaps each of the three points here could fade or pan in, one by one. That could make sense and support the idea of progression here.

Keep things organized in your PowerPoint design and introduce your topic clearly. Stock photo from Envato Elements.

3. Describe Your Progress Visually

Visuals can be very communicative. Consider trying an infographic or other visual element to help convey ideas.

For example, a 50% increase sounds like a big deal, but it's going to visually look like a big deal when we see a visualization of this information.

So, how about making animations in PowerPoint for this scenario?

We could use animations to reinforce the infographic, for example. Or maybe we could have the percentages fade in last, to emphasize their importance. When in doubt, pick one part to emphasize. Less is usually more.

Infographics and other visual aids can help visually communicate topics in your PowerPoint presentation.

4. Remember to List Your Contact Details

A strong PowerPoint presentation is typically designed to inform and engage an audience. We want our audience to connect with us, so make sure they're clear on how to do so. It's great to take questions during or after your presentation, but what about later?

Again, when thinking about making animations in PowerPoint, keep these tips in mind:

  • Where do you want to add emphasis? Use animation to enhance, not distract.
  • Not sure? Then keep it simple with a clean transition into the slide.

So, in this slide, we could stick to a simple fade in, that could work just fine. No need to keep viewers waiting on any information here.

Make sure your PowerPoint presentation tells the viewer how to get in touch. Stock photo from Envato Elements.

You'll notice that not all these slide examples contain complex animations. When each slide is loaded with many animated objects, your audience is likely to become distracted and tune out. This is why we recommend that you be selective with including animations in your PowerPoint presentations.

Static presentations have long been the norm, but why settle? Instead, consider creating animated presentations that have vibrant and eye-catching designs. Using animated presentation software will help make your presentations shine and stand out from the crowd.

What is an animated presentation? It’s a presentation that has moving parts inside the slides and creative slide transitions. In some cases, you can even have your animations trigger as you click on the slide.

These effects can make your presentation much more engaging for your audience. Not only that, it gives you, as the presenter, cues to move forward with the information on the slides. Sure, PowerPoint can be animated too, but there are many other, better options for animated presentation software that you should know about.

Animated Presentation Software FAQs

animated presentation software - Visme logo

An animated presentation software allows users to apply special effects to the transition between slides. Using a tool like Visme will turn your presentations into works of digital art.

The animation options are classy, easy to use and never over the top.

Visme's animated presentation templates  include a staggered animation of elements right out of the box. So, even if you don’t add anything else to your slides, a finished Visme presentation will already be animated and ready to go!

If you don’t like the way this default transition works, you can change it inside the slide controls.

Below are the different animation controls available inside Visme.

Slide Transitions

As I mentioned before, Visme presentations come animated right out of the box .

But there are plenty of other options if you want to change that. Click on the gear icon in one of the slides and you’ll see the option for “slide transitions.”

animated presentation software - slide transitions

You can choose between the following:

  • Transition delay
  • Advance after
  • When a video is done playing

The last one only applies if you have added a video to your slide.

The default transition style is “enter from side” but you can also choose from the following:

  • Staggered fade
  • Enter from bottom
  • Enter from top
  • Simple fade

All choices can be selected for one slide at a time, or for all slides. This is practical when some slides have media, like video or audio narration.

Pro-tip: Stick to one style or at the most two. If you mix and match too many styles your presentation will look confusing and the magic of animated transitions will be lost. Also, if you add animation to your elements, these have to work together with your slide transitions!

The animation controls in Visme are available for every single element on a slide. To access them, simply click on an element, click Actions and click Animate to open the animations menu.

animated presentation software - animations animated presentation software - animations

Next, select if you want the animation as an element enters the stage or as it exits.

Then, set the timing for the animation and then pick the animation style .

You can choose from the styles below:

  • Fly from left
  • Fly from right
  • Fly from top
  • Fly from bottom

After you have added at least one animation, you’ll be able to see the animation timeline. Click on the arrow next to the timer that now appears at the bottom of your screen to look at the basic or advanced animation timeline.

Interactivity

To level up your presentations even more, add interactive elements to your slides. Some of the interactivity features that Visme boasts includes:

  • External links
  • Video embeds
  • Slide linking
  • Voiceovers activated on click
  • Hotspots for pop-ups or hoverovers

To add interactivity to your presentation, click on the element that you want to make interactive, click Actions then click Actions again from the menu that’s appeared. You can choose to link that element to an external web page, a slide or another element.

Animated Illustrations

The last major animation feature that Visme has to offer is our vast library of animated illustrations, graphics and presenting cartoons. Add characters, illustrations, gestures, special effects, avatars and more that help your slides move and catch your audience’s attention.

If you want to know more detailed instructions on how to make presentations with Visme, watch our tutorial video on how to use the various features.

3D Animated Characters

Aside from the animated illustrations and graphics, Visme also offers an easy-to-use character builder you can use to create 3D animated characters .

Add these 3D characters to your presentations to instantly grab attention and boost engagement. In fact, you can also create a custom 3D character to represent your brand. This lets you design hyper-personalized presentations that strengthen your brand identity.

Customize the appearance of your character—from facial hair to skin tone—so it fits your vision. Then, choose an animation style or pose that matches your content (or keep your character static.) You can even save your custom 3D animated characters to use in other projects and presentations.

3D Data Widgets

Finally, transform boring statistics and numbers into visually engaging graphics that represent your data in the most engaging way possible. How? With Visme’s 3D Data Widgets .

Our 3D widgets are created by in-house professionals, which means you won’t find these graphics anywhere else. Show percentages, amounts and comparisons with 3D thermometers, batteries, clocks, stacks of coins and books and more unique graphics.

The best part? They’re all fully customizable. You can change the colors to fit your brand or design, and even rotate the objects in 3D.

how to create a animated presentation

Prezi has been the animated presentation software of choice for educators for a long time. The zoom in and zoom out effects are always a delight with students of any age.

Let’s take a look at how animations work on Prezi and their range of customization.

First of all, Prezi uses animation as the way a presentation transitions from slide to slide.

The first slide has all the topics in a layout and the presenter must click on each one to enter a set of slides. When a topic is clicked, the effect is a zoom-in visual that takes the audience on a journey inward. The presenter can then exit that slide and zoom-out to the first overview slide again.

Additionally, all slide elements can be animated to fade in or fade out. Simply click on an element and add an animation. The animations for each element can be reordered easily with a movable tab.

animated presentation software - Prezi interface

From the animation controls, you can also add a new zoom-in area to any slide, which adds another level of information to the presentation.

Finally, the main overview page can have animation controls depending on what topic has been opened, creating even more animated options.

3 PowerPoint

animated presentation software - powerpoint logo

The most widely used presentation software, PowerPoint, also has lots of animation features.

The options for animation on PowerPoint are quite varied and can turn a boring presentation into a fun experience. But they can also turn any presentation into a big animated mess in no time .

Of course, if you use some restraint, you can create amazing animated presentations with PowerPoint. Let’s take a look at the animation options inside PowerPoint.

First of all, every single element inside each slide can be animated more than once.

PowerPoint offers around a hundred animation options; from regular slide-ins to pinwheels and color fills. When an animation is added to an element, a marker shows up next to it on the slide that shows its position in the animation timeline.

how to create a animated presentation

The animation timeline is on the right side and includes lots of customization options.

The timeline is unique for each slide, and the order can be rearranged by dragging the elements up or down on the timeline. Each animation effect can be given an “on click” control and also a timed value.

Slide transitions in PowerPoint also have animation controls.

how to create a animated presentation

There are around 20 slide transition options and they can be further customized using the controls in the top bar. You can choose how long the transition lasts and even give it a sound.

animated presentation software - Genially logo

Genially has a pretty high standard for animations. When you click on any element in a slide, two tiny buttons pop up. One of them is for adding animations to that particular element.

The animation controls open on the right side of the editor and offers many customization options. What’s unique about this animated presentation software is that the effect can be continuous apart from on-entrance and on-exit. What you can’t do is control animations on a timeline or add a delay.

animated presentation software - Genially interface

When it comes to slide transitions, there are around ten style options. Choose for it to be horizontal, vertical or centered. The slide transitions can be selected slide by slide or for all slides at once.

5 Beautiful.ai

animated presentation software - beautiful ai logo

Animation controls in Beautiful.ai are available inside each slide. And if you don’t choose anything, the elements in your slides will be slightly animated on their own.

But that's the only thing that makes Beautiful.ai an animated presentation software .

animated presentation software - beautiful ai interface

Customizability is limited. If you want to change how the animations work, you can change the speed, timing and order. What you can’t do is choose how or from where the element appears on the slide.

There are some simple slide transitions, but you have no option to change them either.

Create a stunning presentation in less time

Keynote is the Apple software version of PowerPoint.

There are plenty of animation options for animating elements on Keynote slides. Like most other animation software , you can animate the entrance and the exit of an element on a slide.

Additionally, you can also add an action animation to happen when you click on the slide.

The options for animation range from standard fades to bumps and light bulb spark effects. All the animation options can be customized for speed and intensity, and can also be given a specific timing.

animated presentation software - Keynote interface

Keynote also has animated slide transition effects. The controls are in the same place as the element animations, you just have to click on the slide instead of an actual object. There are over 20 transition effects, which can be customized for duration and direction.

There is one particularly special transition effect called Magic Move. This animated transition makes objects, words and characters look like they are moving from one slide to another.

animated presentation software - Slides logo

In the Slides animated presentation software, you can animate all the elements in a slide with the usual fades and slides. These can be customized to work on click, on hover or automatically on a timer. The timing controls have duration and delay values that you can edit.

The slide transitions in Slides are a bit more unique than standard animated transitions.

animated presentation software - Slides interface

Transitions are separated into regular transition and background transition, and there are six options for each. The background transition effects work only when a slide has a background image or color.

However, the transitions can only be done for the entirety of the presentation, not slide by slide.

Transitions in Slides are automatically applied to the entirety of the presentation, not slide by slide. However, you can override this for specific slides by tweaking the settings for each individual slide.

What are the different animation styles commonly used in presentations?

Presentations often use various animation styles, like 2D, 3D, motion graphics, whiteboard and kinetic typography. 2D animations are flat and simple, while 3D adds depth and realism. Motion graphics combine text, shapes and images, and whiteboard animations mimic hand-drawn illustrations. Kinetic typography uses moving text to convey messages.

What are the types of animated presentations?

Some types of animated presentations include 2D animation videos, 3D animation videos, whiteboard animation videos, motion graphic videos, animated typography videos and stop motion videos.

Which animation is best for presentations?

The best animation style for presentations depends on the content and target audience. However, simple, clean animations that enhance the message without overwhelming the viewer are generally preferred in most situations.

It's important to choose animations that complement your presentation's tone and purpose instead of distracting from the core content.

Can you animate a PowerPoint presentation?

Yes, PowerPoint offers built-in animation tools, effects and transitions that allow users to animate the text, images, shapes, slides and other elements in their presentations.

You can also edit your PowerPoint presentations using a third-party tool like Visme to add even better, more advanced and sleek animations, interactivity and design elements.

What are the 4 types of animation in PowerPoint?

PowerPoint offers four main types of animations: entrance, emphasis, exit and motion paths.

  • Entrance animations determine how elements appear on the slide, such as fading in or flying in.
  • Emphasis animations draw attention to specific elements, like pulsing or changing color.
  • Exit animations define how elements leave the slide.
  • Motion paths create custom movement patterns for objects.

What is better than PowerPoint?

There are several alternatives to PowerPoint, but one of the best tools for creating engaging presentations is Visme. The platform offers powerful and easy-to-use tools for creating, editing, animating, presenting, sharing and downloading all kinds of slide decks.

Visme’s presentation software gives you access to thousands of ready-made presentation templates and lets you customize every aspect of the slides, use AI and branding tools, add animated elements and interactivity, embed multimedia and much more.

Genially in a nutshell

How do I make a presentation interactive and how does Genially work? Find the answers to all of your slide-related questions here!

What’s an interactive presentation?

Interactive slides contain clickable hotspots, links, buttons, and animations that are activated at the touch of a button. Instead of reading or watching passively, your audience can actively interact with the content.

Genially’s interaction presentation software allows you to combine text, photos, video clips, audio and other content in one deck. It’s a great way to condense more information into fewer slides.

If you’re a teacher, you can share multiple materials in one single learning resource. Students can create their own projects using digital media and online maps. For business or training, try embedding spreadsheet data, PDFs, and online content directly in your slides.

An interactive slide deck is more user-friendly than a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation or Google Slides document. That’s because you can break information down into chunks with pop-ups, labels, voiceovers and annotated infographics.

The other benefit of interactive content is increased engagement. It’s easier to keep your audience’s attention when they’re actively participating. Try Genially’s presentation software and free slideshow maker to see how it’s better than other presentation websites. You won’t go back to standard presentation apps!

How do you make a clickable slide?

The best way to make slides clickable is to use Genially’s free interactive presentation program. Design your slide then apply an interaction. In a couple of clicks, you can add popup windows, hyperlinks, close-up images, games, animations, multimedia and other content.

Choose from the library of hotspot buttons and icons to show people what to click on. Go to Presenter View to get a preview and see how your content will appear to your audience.

How do I create presentations that look professional?

You’ve got a deadline looming and you’re staring at the screen with a blank presentation. We’ve all been there! Starting a presentation design from scratch is tricky, especially if you’re short on time.

Genially’s free online presentation maker has over 2000 ready-to-use templates for professional slide presentations, photos slideshows, and more. Each slide design has been created by our team of top graphic designers. No need to worry about fonts, centering images, or designing a matching color scheme. It’s all done for you.

Start by browsing our layouts and themes for education, business and then customize with your own text and images.

How do I share or download my slides?

Because Genially is a cloud based presentation software, you can simply share the link to your slides. Like other online presentation tools, there are no files to download or store on your computer. Everything is saved online.

When you publish your slide deck, it gets its own unique url, just like a website. Share the link with others to let them explore the content in their own time. If you’re presenting live, just click the Present button.

You can also embed your presentation on your website, company wiki, or social media. Genially is compatible with WordPress, Moodle, Google Classroom, and other platforms. If you use an LMS, you can also download your interactive design slides in SCORM format.

For slideshow videos and slideshows with music, share online or download as an MP4 video. Check out our free slideshow templates for ideas.

How To Create Cool Animated Presentations In 5 Easy Steps

You’ve probably seen one of those really cool animated video presentations on YouTube and thought to yourself: “Wow I want one of those explainer videos !” But you soon find out that it’s too expensive, and doing one yourself is just impossible because there is no tool out there that lets you do it…right?

Well, you’re wrong! Now you can Do-It-Yourself!

Once you have learned the five steps to “creating an awesome Powtoon”, you will be able to create your very own cool animated “presentation-cartoon” ( Powtoon ) using Powtoon‘s awesome online animation software.

start using powtoon cta

Functionally it’s as easy as creating a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation, but there are a few new things that you need to consider — (after you finished reading this article please refer to our video tutorial: How To Write an Addictive Script )

How to Create an Animated Presentation

So here are the steps to create an awesome 90 seconds product demo clip using our online video maker :

Step 1: Script

You need to create a script that describes what will happen in every “scene”.

We recommend working with the following simple guidelines to create exciting presentations with an engaging and captivating story:

  • Identify the problem are you or your product addressing .
  • How does the frustration manifest itself? (Expensive, labor-intensive, annoying, etc…)
  • Aggravate problem (for example show what usefulness other solutions are there)
  • What is your solution, what are its benefits and why is it better?
  • CALL TO ACTION: Test us – Try us – Buy Us.

Remember that when reading your newly created script without pauses, 90 seconds corresponds to around 225 words! So before finalizing your script, please make sure to do a word count (and if I can give you another piece of advice: SHORTEN THE SCRIPT ONCE and then SHORTEN IT AGAIN).

Try this animated presentation video template!

Step 2: Voiceover Guide / Background Music

You need to either choose a background track for your music or record a voiceover. This means that you need an MP3 file of the TEXT PARTS of the script read out as they will appear in the Powtoon . Don’t worry, this does not have to be a professional voiceover, it can just be something basic for now, you are doing this mainly as a TIMING guide.

So you can do this yourself (record yourself in http://audioboo.fm/ ) or use an online text to voice software . You can always hire a professional voiceover artist later to give your Powtoon a really polished sound, this can make a really big difference for a relatively small investment.

Once you have your voice-over guide, all you need to do is upload it into Powtoon and you will now be able to add the visuals to the sound.

powtoon video play button graphic

Step 3: Dividing the Slides

Now you can start creating visual content according to the script. Each slide represents a scene and an idea as outlined in the script. Try to keep your slides short, this way you can put a lot of interesting visuals in your Powtoon project.

If you have a voiceover, you can make some of the words come to life using Powtoon’s animated options by making them appear in time on the screen. You don’t need to have each word that appears in the script on the stage but rather chose important words to emphasize certain points.

Step 4: Populate the Slides

Now it’s time to include additional features and make things fun such as colors, graphics, background, animation styles, props, images, and characters to your slides. It’s important to convey the message together with the graphic objects and as little text as possible, so the audience doesn’t have to sit there reading all the time (unless this is the effect you’re after) and doesn’t get overwhelmed with information.

For example: If the problem makes the main character sad, it is enough to display the main character in a sad pose without adding any text.

powtoon editor example image

Step 5: Timing

Now you have to time it all. This is the last step and is actually one that can have a significant effect on the “professional” look and feel of your final result.

The Powtoon timeline is designed to allow you to easily adjust the appearance and timing of all the elements on the screen. You can now listen to the voiceover running in the background and make sure that all the visual elements reflect what you hear. The more accurate you get this; the more awesome the final result!

PowerPoint Animations: Animate Text, Objects, and Slides in Your Presentations

Cover for how to create PowerPoint Animations

Working with graphic assets can bring a degree of expectancy when delivering a presentation, such as in the case of PowerPoint animations. They can help add emphasis to slide content and reveal parts of the slide gradually to help presenters discuss topics sequentially.

As a presenting software, PowerPoint provides all kinds of animations for emphasis, entrance, exit, and to create a set motion. Join us today to learn all about animations in PowerPoint and unleash your creative potential.

Table of Contents

How PowerPoint Animations Can Benefit Presentation Design

Understanding powerpoint animation basics, types of animations in powerpoint, how to animate text on powerpoint, animating objects for visual impact, crafting seamless slide transitions in powerpoint, mastering advanced animation techniques in powerpoint, dos and don’ts of powerpoint animations, real-world use cases of animated presentation slides, recommended animated powerpoint templates, enhanced engagement and understanding through animations.

Dynamic presentations can have many benefits. The importance of such animations is often only realized by people familiar with PowerPoint. As we’ve seen in our guide on visual communication , graphical elements can make concepts more understandable. In the case of animations, we can use the transitions between slides or elements to split concepts and make them clearer.

Audience engagement is another factor, as eye-catching slides often include surprise elements hidden behind animations. These elements attract the audience’s interest and increase retention rate. In this case, animations serve as powerful presentation aids for the speaker.

Capturing Audience Attention

PowerPoint animations are more likely to capture the audience’s attention than static slides. The moving objects on-screen are the type of visuals people are likely to find attention-grabbing instead of trying to read through static slides or looking at static images. On this behalf, storytelling techniques boost their efficacy in connecting with the audience by implementing animations and transitions rather than sticking to static slides.

Emphasizing Relationships Between Elements

Whenever we work with contrasting values, like pros and cons slides , animations help the presenter highlight areas of interest or disclose the opposite values section by section. This, in turn, structures the speech for real-time interaction with the graphical assets rather than having the audience read the slide and lose focus on the speech.

Interactive Presentations

As mentioned before, presenters can craft compelling stories through the careful use of animations in PPT. What is often overlooked is the link between interactive presentations and animations. For instance, a speaker can deliver different outcomes of the presentation by selecting one path whose outcome is revealed through an animation. This “wow” factor induces surprise and creatively presents case scenarios.

Another option is when introducing your team in presentations. Rather than using static slides, incorporating animations gives more rhythm to the presentation and invites the public to interact with the speaker.

Getting Started with Animation in PowerPoint

To start with animations in PowerPoint, select an object you wish to animate and go to the Animations tab to choose an animation to add to the slide element. When adding animations to multiple objects in a slide, you should consider the sequence you wish to use to animate objects.

Animations tab in PowerPoint

Accessing Animation Features

When accessing animation features, you will come across various animation types. By expanding the Animations menu, you can select animations for entrance, exit, emphasis, and motion paths to create a path for your animated sequence. You can also click to instantly preview an animation for the selected object or switch to slideshow mode to see how the animation will appear.

All animation options

Adding Animations to Text and Objects

Once an animation is added to a text or object, a number is assigned. This number shows the sequence in which the object will be presented. For example, the object will be the first to be animated on screen, followed by two, three, and so on.

Sequence number for animations in PowerPoint

You can adjust the sequence of animations, triggers, and other settings from the Animation Pane in PowerPoint.

Animation pane and trigger

Timing and Sequence in Animations

The Timing menu in the Animations pane provides options to set the duration of the animation, the time to delay the animation on the screen (if necessary), and to assess if the animation starts on click, with the previous or after the last animation. How you select these animations will help you adjust the time and sequence of the animations. For example, you can use ‘ with previous’ option to show two animated objects simultaneously.

Controls for animations

Entrance, Exit, and Emphasis Animations

Some of the most commonly used animation types fall under three categories: entrance, exit, and emphasis animations.

Entrance Animations

The Entrance Animations are meant to start or introduce objects. You can explore all entrance-related animations by going to Animations -> Animation (menu) -> More Entrance Effects . This will reveal all entrance animations you can click to preview for a selected object. These often consist of basic animations with effects like appear, fly-in, float-in, strips, wheel, circle, box, dissolve-in, split, wedge, wipe, plus, diamond, checkerboard, blinds, etc. The animations can be divided into three categories: basic, subtle, and moderate. These categories help identify the type of effects in each category according to how prominent they might be on screen.

Entrance PPT animation

Exit Animations

The Exit Animations are meant to help exit a slide or animated sequence to close a topic or subtopic, or to conclude the on-screen animations for a slide. These animations are similar to the Entrance Animations with the same effects. You can use these animation types for an exit sequence using effects like blinds, circles, checkerboard, box, plus, split, wedge, wipe, diamond, dissolve out, contract, swivel, fade, zoom, basic zoom, collapse, float up, etc.

Like the Entrance Animations, you can go to  Animations -> Animation (menu) -> More Exit Effects to preview the animations and to see the three categories for basic, subtle, or moderate animations.

Exit PPT animation

Emphasis Animations

Other than basic, subtle, and moderate, the Emphasis Animations come with an additional category, ‘exciting.’ Emphasis animations in PowerPoint provide visual aids for emphasizing content within slides. The effects for these animation types in PowerPoint are also quite different from the entrance and exit-themed effects. Effects like fill color, grow/shrink, transparency, line color, teeter, color pulse, object color, desaturate, darken, lighten, blink, wave, and others can help emphasize an object within a slide to make it pop out before the audience.

Emphasis PPT animation - Emphasis Effect Animations in PowerPoint (Fill Color, Grow/Shrink, Line Color)

Exploring Motion Path Animations

If primary effects aren’t what you want, it’s time to switch to Motion Paths . These are animated effects in PowerPoint that showcase objects across a specific path. In other words, these are elaborate animations that drag objects on the screen based on a particular shape or path, such as a 4,5, 6, or 8-point star, crescent moon, circle, diamond, football, heart, octagon, pentagon, square, trapezoid, teardrop, right triangle, arc (down, right, left, up), curvy right, bounce right, etc.

Motion Paths are divided into four categories. The basic effects consist of shapes, whereas, Line Curves provide lines and curves to animated objects. Similarly, the special category contains more elaborate effects such as inverted square, loop de loop, peanut, bean, curved square, etc.

Motion Path animation

Choosing Appropriate Animation Styles

When choosing animation styles, picking a style that best resonates with your presentation slides is important. The animations’ names and categories can help you identify what might work for you. Furthermore, after adding an animation, you can go to Effect Options to view the various directions and options used to refine the animation to build your sequence further. Depending on the animation type, you can pick variations of the animation, directions, colors, transparency, points to edit or lock, or other options for selected effects. The image below shows the variations for the Wheel animation in PowerPoint via Effect Options .

Effect Options for PowerPoint Animations

Similarly, if you select Transparency from Emphasis Effects, you can choose how transparent the object will appear on the screen. Likewise, many color-themed effects enable picking a custom color to animate an object.

Transparency effects for animations

Since Motion Paths are unique, you will get options to edit points, lock paths, reverse the direction of the default animated sequence, etc.

Edit points in Motion Paths PowerPoint

Now that you know how to animate in PowerPoint, it’s time to explore making written content more interesting using animations.

Start by opening a blank PPT file and adding a placeholder text. The idea is to learn how text interacts with animation effects without working with complex graphic layouts.

Creating a placeholder text in PowerPoint

Select the text and switch to the Animations tab. In there, pick an animation effect of your preference. You will get a preview of the effect applied – which will show the number of the animation order once completed.

How to animate text in PowerPoint

Animations for text, like any other animation, can be controlled in terms of behavior by accessing the panel at the right-most section of the Ribbon.

Controls for text animation

Additionally, we can expand the animations panel to select from the different effects offered by PowerPoint.

Animations for text in PowerPoint

Animating Text Elements on PPT Templates

Animating text elements to highlight key aspects of your slides can be a great way to create engaging presentations. The Animated 3D 4 Steps & Core PowerPoint Template shown below are among the Animated PowerPoint templates at SlideModel that animate objects and text elements for emphasis while retaining a clear layout.

As visible from the animated sequence from the Animation Pane in the image below, the slide deck uses animated text boxes with a mix of other slide elements to create a sequence where a four-step diagram is highlighted with supported text to help elaborate each part of the diagram in an animated sequence. We can add, remove, or modify the included effects via the Animation Pane.

Animation Pane in PowerPoint

Balancing Text Animations for Impact

By balancing text animations, you can have maximum impact when highlighting content for your slides. The animations can be triggered to start simultaneously to reveal all the text after a sequence of objects, before objects appear, or one by one to reveal the diagram contents gradually.

Linking triggers for animations

Animating Images, Shapes, and Charts

When animating shapes and images, you can use a variety of animation types for entrance, exit, and emphasis, and to make the content pop out. However, charts require subtle animations, and it’s best to use basic effects to reveal charts, such as Appear and Disappear .

The Animated Network Diagram PowerPoint Template is an example of how to animate shapes.

Animated Network Diagram PPT template

The template’s title slide reveals shapes and icons in the form of a diagram in an animated sequence.

You can also include images in such a template to customize the given diagram and animate it to reveal the image simultaneously or after a set of objects has already been revealed.

Animating pictures in PowerPoint

If you are including a chart in your slide that is to be animated, make sure the animation corresponds to other elements that might also be animated. For example, you can trigger the chart to be revealed after the slide title with a simple Appear effect. In such a case, the chart can be displayed altogether or gradually, in animated form.

How to animate a chart in PowerPoint

Applying Object Animations Strategically

When placing slide objects, you must apply the animations strategically to avoid revealing information out of sequence. Furthermore, it is also worth considering how your effects appear. For example, in the image of the diagram below, would you prefer the diagram to appear floating upward or downward? Such considerations and other vital elements, such as your branding needs, are important to ponder when setting your animated sequence.

Order PowerPoint animation options

Enhancing Presentation Flow with Transitions

While Animations for PowerPoint are one way of making your slides engaging, PowerPoint Transitions is another. You can access them via the Transitions tab in PowerPoint and apply transitions between slides.

Transitions panel in PowerPoint

While many legacy transitions provide basic effects when switching between slides, some of the more recent additions to this menu, such as Morph Transition , enable the creation of elaborate animations by using Transitions to animate your slides. The below example shows a slide with the Morph transition, giving an animated effect to the diagram.

Morph Transition PPT

Maintaining Coherence Between Slides

When applying Transitions, it is essential to maintain coherence between slides by ensuring they don’t overlap with any added Animations. To do this, you should preview your slide deck to see how it might appear once all the animated effects have been included in your slides. Like PowerPoint Animations, you can also use Effect Options for Transitions to set a sequence or direction that best suits your needs.

Transition Effect Options in PowerPoint

Layering for Complex Animation Effects

Using layers of multiple objects and slides can easily create advanced animation effects. This can be done using not only PowerPoint animations but also transitions. The Animated Pendulum Swing PowerPoint Templates from the SlideModel archive of animated templates use Transitions like Morph to create animated sequences. The below example shows a swinging pendulum created using Morph.

Animated Pendulum PPT slide

Combining and Triggering Animations

Depending on the number of elements within a slide and the animations used, you can use triggers to customize and set sequences for slide elements to animate. The example below shows the selected pendulum’s various linking options for the on-click trigger. By placing your slide objects to be connected and triggered with different parts of your slide, you can create and customize animated sequences that can be pretty attention-grabbing.

Triggers for Animations in PowerPoint

PowerPoint Animation Painter

If you thought you had to start from scratch to animate each slide of your presentation, you are sorely mistaken. Much like the Format Painter option in PowerPoint, we can find Animation Painter , which is accessible via the Ribbon under the Advanced Animation control options.

Animation Painter in PowerPoint

This tool helps us duplicate animations between elements of the same slide or copy animation effects from one slide to another. As a format copying tool, it requires at least one animation effect to be placed otherwise the option is grayed out.

Creative Experimentation

Experimenting with Animations in PowerPoint can be pretty helpful to avoid making monotonous presentations. Experimentation does not necessarily require making slides from scratch, but you can also use ready-made templates such as the 3D animation PowerPoint Templates at SlideModel. Alternatively, some slide deck templates offer a considerable range of animation effects intended for maximum audience engagement, which users can quickly customize by editing placeholder areas for text, images, and logos.

Below is a list of do’s and don’ts of PowerPoint Animations for making presentations that best use animated effects.

Maintain Animation Moderation

It is essential to maintain moderation when using animations, as the use of too many animations on a single slide or presentation can make the content confusing.

Use of Appropriate Animations

Try to use appropriate animations for slide objects. The animation should suitably show if the object is to enter, exit, be emphasized, or be highlighted using a motion path.

Avoid Animation Overload

Avoid flashy animated sequences unless your presentation is meant for an audience that might find engaging, such as children in a classroom session.

Subtle can be Just as Engaging

Sometimes, subtle animations can be just as engaging as an animation with an elaborate effect. This can, in fact, be a better option than using animations that might be visually overpowering or difficult to follow due to elaborate effects.

Ensure Visual Consistency

As discussed earlier, it is vital to maintain consistency in using animated effects. Be it Animations or Transitions, using flashy effects or too many diverse effects can hurt how the audience perceives your content, as it might become confusing, visually overpowering, or unprofessional. In such a case, the audience might quickly lose interest in the presentation, leading to Death by PowerPoint.

Less is More

The design language of visual designs over the past decade or more has been intended to use fewer effects and graphical elements with ample space to make the interface look clean. Be it Modern UI or Material design apps, this design language has been evident across desktop and mobile UIs. Using the same concept, you can design your slides with fewer animations and graphical elements to make your content more visually appealing.

Turning PowerPoints into Millions

Courtney Allen, a professional PowerPoint designer who came out of a BFA in graphic design from Boise State University, had all but PowerPoint as a part of her portfolio. She started her freelancing career via Upwork, making over a thousand PowerPoints for clients, bringing in as many as $2 million. She suggests using simple designs and animations to make the most out of PowerPoint presentations.

Guy Kawasaki Pitch Deck

Guy Kawasaki, a former Apple employee, whose famous 10-slide pitch deck has inspired a variety of PowerPoint templates. This rule was designed for startups and business presentations, focusing on pitching a concept to investors. While this isn’t directly related to using animations in presentations, it is an example of making the best use of minimalist content in a few slides. You can learn more about the Guy Kawasaki pitch deck from our article about the 10/20/30 rule for PowerPoint presentations .

How not to use an Animated PowerPoint Presentation in Court!

Presentations with animations aren’t always a great idea. In 2014, a court in the United States criticized a PowerPoint presentation by the prosecutor, which led to the court throwing the case out. The presentation was made with sound effects and animations, with flashy elements like the bullseye. Some of the significant mistakes made by the prosecutor included ‘visual advocacy,’ where the defendant was marked with the word ‘guilt’ in the slide deck. Not to mention, the animated presentation seemed to be aimed at influencing the court using visual aids. Something that did not sit well with the court.

Use of PowerPoint by the US Military

The US Military has often been accused of Death by PowerPoint for preparing what some call the worst PowerPoint slides ever created. The issue became so profound that in 2011, it was revealed that an executive communications manager at Microsoft, Dave Karle, was tasked with ensuring that the US military could finally start using the software properly. After discussions with top military officials, an updated military presentation method was created, consisting of a number of presentation templates, tips, and graphics and more than 6000 map symbols.

In this section, you can check some ready-made templates that can be easily customized for your presentation’s purposes. All these templates feature professionally made animation effects with native PowerPoint tools.

We mentioned the advantages of using PowerPoint animations to discuss contrasting values of a situation. Well, this animated Pros & Cons slide is the ideal tool for that purpose, offering a generalist view, then two accompanying slides for Pros & Cons, respectively, with animated effects to introduce additional information per point.

Using animations to make visually appealing and engaging presentations requires ensuring that your content corresponds with your added animated effects. It is always best to use animations in moderation and to keep your slides minimalist while unleashing your creativity as a presenter. Using ready-made PowerPoint templates can also help give you a good starting point to begin experimenting with animations and effects. This can also be useful for people new to PowerPoint Animations to explore what is doable with an animated slide deck, using animated sequences tailored for customization.

Whether you’re using an animated template or making one from scratch, a preview in slideshow mode can save you a lot of trouble with potential issues tied to animated effects. Last but not least, using animations in PowerPoint isn’t always necessary, and you can even go for a simple slide deck with a handful of slides. What matters is that you should be aware of the information being presented, and the visual aids should be just to aid your slides and not meant to be the whole package on their own.

The best ways online to create an animated presentation.

how to create a animated presentation

A lot of people rely on static slide decks created using conventional presentation apps like PowerPoint or Keynote. It seems that the use of animations is still perhaps overrated. Many presenters don’t like experimenting with animations, even for their PowerPoint slides, as they like playing it safe.

This can perhaps be attributed to the plethora of technical issues that presenters can face due to device and software compatibility problems, many of which we touched upon in our post about common tech problems faced by presenters.

While you might not be an expert in using professional animation software like 3D Studio Max, Maya or Adobe After Effects, however, you can easily create animated presentations using some easy to use web services.

Video presentations made using web apps can be shared online or downloaded as offline video files which you can play using a computer or mobile device, without worrying about device compatibility problems. In what is to follow, we will provide you with a list of the 5 best web services for making animated presentations.

1)  GoAnimate

It doesn’t matter whether you are a techie or someone who still has problem navigating through the Windows Start menu. If you know how to use a mouse and keyboard that’s all you need to start making professional looking animations using GoAnimate . This web service allows creating animations using a readymade template, background music and animated characters that you can pick and choose from the given options.

Using GoAnimate is pretty much like using PowerPoint. The only difference is that instead of a slide deck, you can create animated videos with your custom branding. GoAnimate is perfect for making anything from short video clips to marketing demos, videos for your YouTube channel and of course, animated presentations with interesting characters.

GoAnimate screenshot

GoAnimate videos can be downloaded offline, uploaded to YouTube or used for your projects made using other software like Lectora. GoAnimate has a monthly subscription system, however, you can sign-up for a 14-day free trial to test the service.

Wideo is another awesome website for making animated presentations using readymade templates, animated characters and a plethora of useful tools that can help you create animated video clips in no time.

You can start making animated presentations and video clips by either starting from scratch, or opt for a readymade template. Wideo provides a simple slide based layout to help presenters create animated videos with custom branding, animated characters, audio tracks and some awesome backgrounds. Wideo not only provides animated characters but you can also create videos using realistic imagery, such as marketing and sales video presentations with details about your product or service.

Wideo screenshot

Videos made using Wideo can be downloaded offline, uploaded to YouTube and shared across social media websites.

Wideo can be used on a 7-day trial basis, with a limitation of making 30 second videos. This should be enough to test drive the service and see if you want to use Wideo as your animation maker.

3) Animation Maker

Animation Maker is another easy to use web app for making animated videos. You can make use of 120 different animation styles for making awesome video animations. The available video templates cater for all kinds of categories, such as for making animations about education, travel, business, health, food, sports, etc. Animation Maker even has templates for making animated infographics.

Animation Maker has a free edition with limited functionality. The free version is limited to 2 minute SD quality videos.

4)  PowToon

PowToon works pretty much like GoAnimate and Wideo. You can use readymade templates for making animated presentations and video clips by designing various slides that play out in animated form. PowToon offers a lot of resources like royalty free music, animated charts and graphs, as well as online collaboration features to help you design some awesome animated presentations.

Presentations made using PowToon can be downloaded as MP4 files or uploaded to YouTube. You can also export your content in PDF or PPT format. PowToon has a Presentation Mode for making animated video presentations, and a Movie Mode, which is suitable for making video clips of a different nature, such as perhaps marketing videos, animations for a class lecture, informative video clips, etc.

Powtoon screenshot

PowToon offers a free version with 100MB storage, with the option to make 5 minute video clips. The premium packages offer a lot of additional features, with the option to create HD and Full HD video animations.

5) MakeWebVideos

MakeWebVideos is so easy to use that you can create an animated video clip in just 30 minutes. There are several useful templates offered by this online video software that you can pick for making awesome video animations. You can get started by picking a video template, and follow a simple 3 step process to change the graphics, text and background music to quickly create an animated video presentation, marketing video, public service message, etc.

With easy editing features, you can create HD videos which can be downloaded offline or embedded online. MakeWebVideo gives you an estimate for your video once it’s complete. It’s more of a pay as you go system, where costs can vary according to the type of video you create and the resources you use.

MakeWebVideos screenshot

Here is an explainer video which shows how you can create animated videos with MakeWebVideos in just a few minutes.

The web services mentioned in this post include presentation services which are as easy to use as PowerPoint. By using your creative sense, these services can enable you to turn boring charts and confusing data into easy to understand, animated video clips, with a voice over, background music, informative text and animated characters.

animation video checklist

Renderforest’s video maker stands out as one of the best animation apps , offering a range of features and benefits comparable to the top animation apps available, making it a solid choice for those aiming to create an animated video with ease and efficiency. Users also enjoy more control over the creation process and can customize every little detail.

Now that we’ve explored Renderforest’s features and benefits, let’s examine the step-by-step process for making animated videos using this powerful computer platform.

 1. Understand Your Audience

Before going ahead with the creation process, you’ll want to grasp who exactly your audience is and what they resonate with.

For example, let’s say that you’re a tech startup that is aiming to launch a new app specifically targeting Gen Z users.

The Gen Z users are your target audience. In this scenario, understanding that your audience is tech-savvy, digitally native, and values authenticity and humor is crucial.

Conduct Comprehensive Market Research

Consider using tools like Google Analytics, social media insights, and surveys to gather data on your audience demographics, preferences, and behaviors. For our tech startup example, you might discover that Gen Z users prefer short, visually appealing content delivered through TikTok clips, Instagram Stories, or even YouTube Shorts .

Analyze Audience Feedback

Engage with your audience through comments, polls, and direct feedback to gain valuable insights into their likes, dislikes, and pain points. For instance, you may find that Gen Z users appreciate memes, pop culture references, and relatable content that speaks to their experiences.

Personalize Content Accordingly

Based on your research, tailor your animation video’s message, tone, and visuals to resonate with your target audience.

Why not add slang, memes, and trending topics that align with their interests and preferences?

For a tech startup, this may involve using vibrant colors, playful animations, and catchy music to capture Gen Z’s attention and create a connection with them.

2. Create a Compelling Story

select scenes to make animation video

Storytelling is the backbone of any successful animation video, serving as a vehicle to convey your message in a memorable and engaging way. Now, let’s consider the example of a nonprofit organization that is trying to raise awareness about environmental conservation.

Define Your Narrative

Try crafting a storyline that not only educates but also emotionally resonates with your audience. For the environmental nonprofit, the story could follow a protagonist’s journey as they witness the impact of climate change on their community and take action to protect the environment.

Develop Engaging Characters

Introduce relatable characters that your audience can empathize with and root for. In our example, the protagonist could be a young activist who inspires others to join the fight against climate change through their passion and determination.

Create Tension and Resolution

You can build suspense by introducing conflicts or challenges that the characters must overcome. This may involve illustrating the consequences of environmental degradation and the urgency of taking action. Ultimately, resolve the story by showcasing the positive outcomes achieved through collective efforts and environmental stewardship.

Pace Your Storytelling

Make sure to maintain a balance between exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution to keep viewers engaged from start to finish. Use visual cues, music, and narration to guide the audience through the narrative arc and evoke emotional responses at key moments.

3. Choose the Right Animation Style

choose the right animation style

The animation style you choose plays a significant role in shaping the overall tone, mood, and message of your video. Here are different animation templates available on Renderforest and how they might be applied to various scenarios:

2D Animation

Ideal for storytelling and character-driven narratives, 2D animation offers a timeless and versatile approach to visual storytelling. You can use this to create whimsical, hand-drawn illustrations for children’s stories, explainer videos, and educational content.

3D Animation

With its immersive depth and realism, 3D animation is well-suited for product demonstrations, architectural visualizations, and cinematic sequences, which allows for intricate detailing and lifelike movements. This also makes it ideal for showcasing complex concepts or bringing fantasy worlds to life. And for branding purposes, Renderforest offers an online 3D logo animation maker free of charge.

Whiteboard Animation

Whiteboard animation simplifies complex information with its minimalist design, keeping viewers focused on the message through distinctive drawings. Ideal for educational and corporate use, this style effectively conveys stories with its unique, engaging video creations.

Typography Animation

Typography animation blends text with motion, creating dynamic content often seen in movie titles and various video formats. It appeals to font enthusiasts and is widely utilized in social media, business promos, and music videos, offering a canvas for creative text animation .

Account for your brand identity, target audience, and the message you want to convey when choosing an animation style. Whether it’s the playful charm of 2D animation, the immersive realism of 3D animation, or the dynamic energy of motion graphics, the style should match your objectives and resonate with your audience.

4. Use Visual Design Elements

Visual design elements are the building blocks of your animation video, shaping its aesthetics and boosting its storytelling impact.

Here’s how you can use these elements effectively to create animation videos:

Color Palette

Choose a color palette that reflects your brand identity and aligns with the viewer’s emotions and preferences. Let’s suppose you’re creating a corporate training video. You might want to opt for a subdued palette of blues, grays, and whites to convey a sense of professionalism and reliability to your audience.

Select fonts that are legible, visually appealing, and consistent with your brand’s voice and tone. For a fashion brand targeting young, fashion-forward consumers, for example, trendy and stylish fonts like sans-serif or handwritten scripts can convey a sense of creativity and modernity. On the other hand, a financial institution may choose more traditional and authoritative fonts—like serif or slab serif—that instill trust and credibility.

Imagery and Graphics

Integrate images, illustrations, and graphics that enhance your narrative and engage your audience visually. For example, if you’re creating an animation video for a travel agency, stunning photographs of exotic destinations, iconic landmarks, and adventurous activities can transport viewers to far-off places and inspire their wanderlust. Similarly, custom illustrations and icons can simplify complex concepts and add visual interest to educational or explainer videos.

Composition and Visual Hierarchy

Don’t forget to pay attention to the composition of your animation frames and the visual hierarchy of your elements to guide viewers’ attention and create a seamless viewing experience. Use techniques like framing, rule of thirds, and leading lines to create visually compelling compositions that draw viewers into the story. You’ll also want to make sure that important information is presented prominently and clearly, using size, color, and placement to prioritize key elements and messages.

5. Implement Engaging Audio

Audio elements are essential for enhancing the emotional impact and immersive quality of your animation video. Let’s explore how you can leverage audio effectively to create a memorable viewing experience.

Background Music

Go for background music that complements the mood and tone of your video, whether it’s uplifting and energetic, soothing and ambient, or dramatic and suspenseful.

For example, a fitness brand promoting a new workout program may use upbeat and motivational tracks to inspire viewers and keep them engaged. Meanwhile, a meditation app may opt for a calming and tranquil music track to create a sense of relaxation and serenity.

Sound Effects

Incorporating sound effects to enhance the realism and dynamism of your animation adds depth and dimension to visual elements and actions.

In an animated explainer video demonstrating the features of a mobile app, for instance, sound effects like button clicks, swooshes, and notifications can simulate the user experience and make the content more interactive and engaging.

As for a nature-themed animation, ambient sounds like chirping birds, rustling leaves, and flowing water can create an immersive audio environment that transports viewers to the scene.

Try to use voice-overs to deliver narration, dialogue, or information in your animation video. It also adds a human touch and personality to your storytelling.

You can choose voice actors whose tone, accent, and delivery style align with your brand and target audience. For example, a children’s educational video may feature a friendly and enthusiastic voice-over artist who engages young viewers and makes learning fun and engaging.

A corporate training video, on the other hand, may stick with a professional and authoritative voice to convey expertise and credibility.

6. Export and Share

how to create a animated presentation

Optimizing your animation video for viewing across different platforms and devices is always a good idea. It’s key to maximizing your brand’s reach and engagement.

But how can you get your video to perform well on other mediums, such as mobile and social media channels?

Aspect Ratio

Consider the aspect ratio of your video to ensure it displays optimally on various devices and platforms. For mobile viewing, vertical or square aspect ratios are often preferred, as they take up more screen real estate and are better suited to the way users hold their devices. On social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where vertical videos dominate the feed, optimizing for vertical viewing sees that your content stands out and captures viewers’ attention.

Resolution and File Size

Optimizing the resolution and file size of your video helps to strike a balance between visual quality and loading speed. High-definition (HD) resolution is perfect for crisp and clear visuals, but large file sizes can result in slow loading times and buffering issues, especially on mobile networks. Compressing your video files and choosing the appropriate resolution for each platform can ensure smooth playback and a positive user experience across devices and connection speeds.

Mobile-Friendly Design

Design your animation video with mobile users in mind, keeping user interface elements and text legible and interactive on smaller screens. Using large, clear fonts and intuitive navigation makes it easy to view and navigate on touchscreens.

Keep in mind how your video will appear in a mobile feed or timeline, optimizing thumbnails, captions, and descriptions to attract attention and encourage clicks.

7. Testing and Iterating

Once you’ve created your animation video on Renderforest, the journey doesn’t end there. The next—and hopefully final—step is to test and iterate your animation video based on your audience’s feedback. This is to make sure that your video resonates with your viewers and achieves its intended goals.

A/B Testing

To guarantee that your video resonates with your target audience, you’ll want to conduct A/B tests with different versions of your video. This allows you to compare performance metrics such as view count, engagement rate, and conversion rate.

Test variations in visuals, audio, messaging, and calls-to-action to identify what resonates most with your audience and drives desired outcomes. For example, you can experiment with different thumbnail images, video lengths, or voiceover styles to see which combination generates the highest engagement and conversions.

Analyze Viewer Engagement

Use analytics tools to track viewer engagement metrics such as watch time, drop-off points, and click-through rates. Analyzing this data will give you insights into how viewers are interacting with your video and where improvements can be made.

Suppose you notice a high drop-off rate at a certain point in the video. You can revisit that segment to identify potential issues with pacing, content relevance, or viewer retention.

Gather Audience Feedback

Try to encourage viewers to provide feedback through surveys, comments, and social media interactions. Also, pay close attention to both qualitative feedback, such as comments and testimonials, as well as quantitative data, like survey responses and ratings.

Once that’s done, you want to use this feedback to identify strengths and weaknesses in your video and make informed decisions about how to iterate and improve future content. For example, if viewers consistently praise the visuals but critique the pacing, you can prioritize adjustments to pacing and storytelling in your next video project.

Iterate and Refine

Based on your findings from testing and audience feedback, you can make iterative improvements to your video to dial up its effectiveness and impact.

You’ll find that this may involve refining visual elements, tweaking audio cues, optimizing for different platforms, or adjusting messaging to better resonate with your audience. When you continuously iterate and refine your video content based on real-world feedback and data, you can make sure that each iteration is more engaging, compelling, and effective than the last.

Wrapping it Up

With attention spans getting shorter and shorter, mastering the art of animation video creation can significantly enhance your brand’s communication strategies and captivate your audience’s attention online.

By following the step-by-step guide outlined above and using the features of Renderforest, you can make an animation video that will leave a lasting impression on your viewers. The platform also offers a ton of other tools, like the audio visualizer , which you ca use to make music videos .

So, are you ready to get started? Try Renderforest’s Video Animation Maker today and bring out your unique creativity with some stellar animation video production.

Animate images and make animations from scratch like a professional

Staviraa

1. Presentation

Hi! I'm Staviraa, formerly known as “V21e”.

I'll show you how to make animations from scratch using some of the features available in Clip Studio Paint, such as the “eraser” layer properties and brush customization. I'll also show you how to animate images that were not previously planned for animation, taking advantage of the program's features such as “Auto Interpolation”.

I'll explain how I animate and my logic when working within the program.

Hope you like it!

I'll divide the article into sections. If you want to go straight to applying effects to the image, go to the section “6. Methods, tips and important points for planning animation”

2. The animation

Animation is a rapid explosion of images that gives inanimate objects the illusion of movement. It's an optical illusion, in a nutshell.

Animation is adding the time factor to the medium of expression. A photograph with the time factor? It's a video strip. A real-life sculpture simulating movement in a sequence of photos? It's the "stop-motion" animation style. Drawings with movement in time? Traditional or 2D animation.

The dimension of "time" that is given to the work can be in different ways.

According to Richard Williams in his book "Animator's Survival Kit" (2001) the human being has managed to create the dimension of time to tell small animated stories before the invention of animated films. With the invention of the Thaumatrope ("wonderturner" in English), the Praxinoscope and the Flick book... to name a few.

✧ Objects to simulate time in images: thaumatrope (1.), the praxinoscope (2.) and the Flick book (3.).

✧ How the thaumatrope works. It consists of a disk with two different images on both sides and a piece of string on each side of the disk. In the animation above, the image of a bird and a cage are shown at different speeds. When the thaumatrope spins at high speed (Left) it seems that the bird is inside the cage. The slower animation (Right) can be distinguished when the thaumatrope spins, without generating an optical illusion.

After the invention of animated films, animation has now become a more accessible medium for everyone. This facilitation is due to the greater accessibility of electronic devices capable of projecting images at high speed - movie projector, television screens, computers and cell phones - and the creation of software that allows the creation of animations compatible with these media such as Clip Studio Paint.

Let's start exploring how to give the dimension of "time" to our illustrations in Clip Studio Paint!

✨ It has been seen that the minimum projection speed required for an animation to be able to deceive the human perception of movement is the exposure of 24 images in one second . This exposure measurement is known as “ Frame Per Second ” or as “Frame rate” (English). Its translation into Spanish would be “ Photograms per second” and “Frame rate ”, respectively. Its abbreviation is “FPS“ and its symbol is “f/s ”.   The following FPS amounts are usually used to animate: 8FPS, 12 FPS 24FPS, 30FPS, 60FPS… up to 120FPS!   The more FPS required to animate, the smoother the animation will look… however, it means using more drawings to be able to finish a second. Be careful not to overdo it with the amount of FPS you use for animation! Especially if it's 2D animation… [laughs]

3. Introduction to animation tools

Although in this article I will highlight the most important tools and functions in my opinion for the animation process, it is necessary to have basic knowledge of what the Clip Studio Paint interface is in its animation mode.

I suggest reading the following articles , especially if it is your first time in the world of animation within the ClipStudio Paint program. If you are someone more experienced in the program or you come from other animation interfaces, you may not need to read them to navigate fluently through this tutorial. Even so, I suggest a little reading if you have questions.

I hope my explanations are useful for your learning process!

》Article focused on explaining in detail the Clip Studio Paint animation interface.

It shows everything from setting up a new document for animation to basic explanations of animation concepts such as “ frames per second”

》Specialized section for freehand animations and how to animate moving backgrounds in a simple way. It consists of several parts, ideal for getting familiar with the interface.

If you want to see what's possible with animations in ClipStudio Paint, I recommend checking out KevinFarias 's work right here at Clip Studio Paint TIPS!

He has very complete and clear work when explaining, especially since he documents each of his creations step by step not only in his written article, but also with a video. Don't hesitate to check it out and get inspired!

4. Animation interface

4.1 timeline.

In order to animate, you need to add the “Time” dimension to Clip Studio Paint. This is done with a timeline. To access the timeline in Clip Studio Paint on a computer, you can do it in two ways.

First method: You can access this feature by going to the bottom left of the canvas, where the [zoom slider] is located, you will then be able to see the figure “⯭” (1). Click on the icon to display the timeline (2).

Image of the Clip Studio Paint program where “⯭” is located (top) | Timeline display (bottom)

You can change the display size of the timeline on the screen by moving the cursor near the top edge of the timeline until the cursor changes to “↕“

To hide the timeline, click “⯯”.

Second method: This feature can be accessed in [Window]→[Timeline]

(Image below).

4.2 Basic animation tools on the timeline

When unfolding the timeline, we can find different icons that will help us in our animation process.

In the timeline, there will be a small section where we can see our animation cells (6) and their exposure duration weighted in frames per second.

We have an icon to play or stop our animation (1), add special folders to start animating (2), add cells to make new drawings to our animation (3), the use of [onion skin] (4) and an icon to access [Automatic interpolation].

In case your timeline looks empty - Common in .clip documents that were not configured from the beginning for animation - We have the [New timeline] icon (8.) to add the “ time ” dimension to our document.

✧ Steps to activate the timeline. Click on [New timeline] (1). A pop-up window will appear with the timeline features (2).

✧ In the timeline pop-up window, you can customize the animation cell speed [FPS] and the total number of cells you want to start animating (3). If you are happy with this data, click [accept] (4).

If you create a new file from the beginning specifying that it is for an animation, the “activate timeline” step is skipped.

Note: In Clip Studio Paint Pro you can only work with 24 total frames. In Clip Studio Paint EX you can work with more than 24 total frames. The FPS are customizable in both versions.

✧ Done! You have your timeline active!

There is a correlation between the timeline and the display area of our layers. (Image below)

✧ b. The correlation between the animation folders in the layer view and the timeline is shown. This is marked with different colors. | a. The correlation between the layer view in the layer view and the timeline is shown.

4.3 Animation folders, frames and onion skins

Layers inside [animation folders] on the timeline are transformed into [Frames] . However, you work inside them as if they were a normal layer.

If you work on a layer outside of a timeline folder, you will not be able to animate.

To add a new [animation folder], simply click its icon.

The animation folder will be displayed on the timeline and in the layer view.

There are two ways to add frames to the Timeline. **The first method is to click on the icon to add a new frame.

This action will be reflected in the timeline and in the layer view.

The second method, is to select the area of the timeline where you want to add the frame. The selection is represented by the red line on the timeline.

Next, [Right click] → [New animation cel].

If you want to add another frame, simply repeat either process.

Added frames will automatically be named 1, 2, 3, […] ; when a frame is added between two keyframes, the frame number plus a letter is usually displayed. Example: 1a, 1b, 1c […] (Image below)

If you want to move the size of a frame, you can select the slot between frames on the timeline. It will turn red. Then, by dragging with the cursor, you can move the frame to where you want it.

You can also move multiple frames at the same time by selecting them!

If you want to delete a frame, simply [right click] on the frame → [Delete]

The [onion skin] allows you to see some of the drawings before and after the selected frame. This allows you to animate the intermediate frame more consistently. It is activated and deactivated by clicking on its icon, as shown in the following animation.

4.4 Automatic interpolation

Interpolation allows you to animate static images or complete animations in a very simple way. The existence of this tool allows you to greatly speed up the workflow.

For example, if you have a complete animation of a butterfly flapping its wings, you can animate its path through the air without having to redraw the butterfly animation.

Auto-tweening is not limited to moving an object or animation around, you can also animate a scale (1), the rotation of the object axis (2) and opacity (3.)! (see image below)

It is possible to animate all of these features in a single animation or image. With a little creativity, anything is possible! I suggest that if you plan to use this feature, do so at the final stage of your animation.

To activate this feature, you need to be in the folder you want to enable keys for in order to do automatic interpolation. Next, go to the [Timeline] bar → [Enable keys for this layer] (image below) .

On the timeline, in the folder we want to animate, small triangular figures will appear at the bottom indicating that the timeline is ready to insert animation keys. In the layer view, in the folder we selected to animate, a pencil and a lock icon will appear.

To add a new keyframe to animate with automatic interpolation, we give [Right click] → [Insert key]. The keyframe will appear on the indicated frame (red line on the timeline). A diamond will appear over the frame. (Image below)

To edit the position of our folder, we have to go to [tools] →[Operation Sub Tool] →[Object]

With the [Object] sub tool it is possible to edit very easily what would be the position, opacity and rotation of the objects within the folder since the image transformation controller appears. (image below)

You can see the measurements and features to be animated reflected in [Tool Properties] - below the subtools window- . They can be seen active because they have a rhombus inside a square next to the name of the feature to be animated. If you want to add a key to a feature that has not been considered for animation within [Tool Properties], simply click on its corresponding square. (Image below)

If you want to Delete, Cut, Copy or Paste any keyframe with its information, you must position yourself over the keyframe in the timeline →[Right click] →[Delete/Cut/Copy/Paste]. (image below)

If you use [Insert Frame…] or [Delete Frames…] within the popup window, you will delete or add frames from the timeline, not from the auto-interpolation keyframes.

You can also delete auto-interpolation keyframes by positioning the timeline pointer (red line) over the keyframe you want to delete (1). Then click on [Delete Key] (2.) (Image below)

Do you want to edit the content inside the animation folder again? You can disable auto-interpolation keyframes by clicking [Enable keyframes for this layer] or you can click [Edit layers with keyframes enabled] (image below.), whichever you like best is fine.

✨ - I have several animation layers: one for lineart, one for base coloring, one for highlights and shadows. How do I animate them all together with automatic interpolation?*   -It is necessary to put all the animation layers inside a normal folder inside the layer viewer. Once you have that normal folder, make sure that the normal folder is selected and click [Enable keyframes for this layer]. The normal layer will be ready to animate both in the timeline and in the layer viewer. The last step is to insert keyframes in the normal folder inside the timeline… and that's it! you have everything to work with multiple animation folders at once.

4.5 Setting shortcuts for animation

Keyboard shortcuts are very useful to speed up work on the computer or on our phone. There are very famous keyboard shortcuts such as “Ctrl+Z” to return to a previous action or “Ctrl+C” to copy something selected. Knowing how to configure or know keyboard shortcuts is important to be able to customize and make our experience more enjoyable when using Clip Studio Paint.

For the animation process, I suggest programming 2 new keyboard shortcuts: Previous Key and* Next Key.

This will avoid hiccups and the feeling of immobility that comes from not being able to have dynamic control in the travel between keyframes in the timeline.

To configure our custom keyboard shortcuts, this function can be accessed in [File]→[Shortcut Settings]. (Image below).

Next, a pop-up window will appear. Within this window, there are the categories and sub-categories that can be customized for a keyboard shortcut in Clip Studio Paint.

To customize the [Previous Key] and [Next Key] actions, you will need to go to [Animation]→[Move Frame] in this window. In this subcategory, you will find [Previous Key] and [Next Key].

I suggest that you assign [Previous Key] and [Next Key] keyboard shortcuts that are easy to remember, rarely used, and one right after the other. I use the “.” key for [Previous Key] and “-” for [Next Key]. They are right next to the arrow keys and easy to remember.

4.6 Tips for getting familiar with animation mode

At this point, with all of the above in mind, I suggest that you open a new document and play around with the program, trying to animate something simple… It can literally be a doodle! The important thing is that you become familiar with the tools and see how you work more comfortably within the program.

Take your notes, take your time… after that, we are ready to animate!

5. Animation production process

I have written this section to inform you about the animation process and what exactly I am going to cover and work on in this article.

The animation process within the industry can vary greatly from the sequence of steps that are taken to make a school project animation or an individual animation for fun.

In my words, the differences between each process depend on the intention behind the creation of the project - entertainment in the industry, final school project, presentation for a contest, personal project- , the level of organization necessary to make the project efficient with the resources at hand - workers, salary, time frames, training in different animation programs- and the final result -personal satisfaction, quality, monetary compensation, etc.-.

The general steps to make an animation are the following:

-Planning: Choose the concept or idea, design characters, get to know the audience.

-Design: Create script, storyboard, layout, character and background design.

-Animation: References for animation, keyframing, in-betweens, coloring, lighting.

-Postproduction: Editing, special effects, retouching and audio.

For this article, I'll just cover a little bit of the planning and animation part of making a mini animation… the rest of the steps are superfluous! You don't need to have a storyboard for a 3 second animation or character sheets when the characters are stationary… that's better used in a longer animation project.

In this article, all that's required is a little bit of creativity, clarity on what you want to work on… and of course, knowing how to use Clip Studio Paint!

Speaking of clarity, let's talk about…

6. Methods, tips and important points for planning animation

What do you want to animate? How do you plan to do it? With the tools we know, what can we do to make our animation easier? With this section of the article, I hope to help you find answers to these questions.

Here, your personal experience in using drawing programs, video editing, making animations and post-production programs to add special effects will be very useful, especially for the experience of how to organize a project.

✧ Descriptive image about how an animation or drawing project is visualized in the artist's mind.

When you are a beginner at drawing in digital programs, it is normal to draw everything on the same layer. However, with time, experience and looking for a little bit of techniques, our workflow becomes more refined. The background is worked on in one layer, the main characters in another; the coloring of the outline of the drawing is worked on separately and the details go at the end. This workflow may be logical, but at the beginning when we are just discovering the world of digital drawing, it can be difficult to speed up our work. The same happens with knowing how to animate. That is why your experience animating, drawing or editing is important here!

Animation folders have the same properties as a normal layer, so it is possible to divide the drawings into animation folders and work on parts separately.

Some things possible with the animation tools in Clip Studio Paint are the following:

You can animate frame by frame (1) and add auto-interpolation to that animation (2). This can be very helpful for walking or flying creatures like ghosts. You can present a still image and animate on it in an animation folder frame by frame (3). This is quite useful if you want to animate hair that is moved by the wind or light clothing . If you want to animate with the least possible effort, you can animate a still image with auto-interpolation (4) . You can achieve very nice results with that simple function like a girl waving . You can also make two animations at different times (5). This allows you to make an animation that repeats itself that is very attractive to the eye despite being so simple.

These are just a few examples… knowing how to organize your animation folders and knowing how to handle the Clip Studio Paint tools will allow you to exploit your creativity to the maximum.

Can you identify or imagine how I made the following animation?

(Work in progress. I'm too excited to wait to finish my article so I can post it. Please expect updates as the days go by. I hope it helps.)
