Location, Location, Location

Ground-up builds and full guttings mean you can choose the placement of your office, but think twice before defaulting to a central spot. “The floorplan from four years ago doesn’t work anymore,” says New York–based interior designer Nate Berkus. “The home office used to be in the middle of the home, off the kitchen or family room, but people are moving it down the hall to feel a separation between the home and the home office.” The physical remove helps delineate work from home, making the office a destination unto itself. 

Desk Marks the Spot

The desk is often the room’s centerpiece, so positioning is crucial. “We don’t like to do desks that face a wall, as it makes them feel confining,” says designer Ali Budd from her Toronto studio. “[You want to look out] at an open space whenever possible.” 

What you don’t want to see is a tangle of wires. To avoid unseemly cords stretched across the room, Budd has designed desks that run the power cable down the inside of the leg of the desk and directly into a floor outlet. This is where antique pieces prove problematic: It’s hard to hide much tech inside without retrofitting, which means you might want to consider whether it’s still the right workspace for your modern job. 

“One hundred percent of our clients want [integrated] tech,” says London-based designer Katharine Pooley, who has designed castles, superyachts, and jets for royalty around the world. “They’re used to it, and they want it done better.” This means seamlessly integrating the technology in such a way that “none of our desks have computers or wires on them anymore—everything’s wireless, everything’s seamless.” A bespoke Pooley design allows for computers to be concealed within the casework, to be raised and lowered at the push of a button; these statement desks are made by hand and can take up to eight months, with prices running into the high five figures or more. 

Getting Wired

If you spend hours sitting at a desk, choose comfort over chic. “Gone are the days of picking a home-office chair on the aesthetics alone,” notes Berkus, who has designed spaces for the likes of Ricky Martin and Karlie Kloss. “The request for decently designed, ergonomic seating is constant,” he says. Sergio Silva, vice president of design and innovation at ergonomic-furniture brand Humanscale , suggests keeping it simple. “Stay away from over-stylized designs,” he says. “Chairs that focus on function and simplicity tend to have a timeless aesthetic.” 

Silva recommends Humanscale’s Freedom chair (designed by the late Niels Diffrient, the “father” of ergonomics) for a sleek, self-adjusting seat that adapts to the user’s movement rather than the other way around. 

Call Centered

“The background of a video call has become a key element of design,” explains Hoppen, who designed Sydney’s lavish Sirius Building, while Berkus notes it has been “a consideration for every project in the last three years—we have conversations about camera and Zoom angles.” If a picture paints a thousand words, your backdrop speaks volumes before you ever open your mouth. At Pooley’s Château de la Croix des Gardes, in Cannes, the office features a collection of rare books that are beautiful but also functional: They diffuse the direct reflection of noise, thus improving the sound profile of the room. Berkus says that a successful project always comes down to balance. “You don’t want it to read as too opulent, too studied, too finished,” he says. “A properly designed home is always at the crossroads of function and beauty.”

Designing Effective Homework

Best practices for creating homework that raises student achievement

Homework. It can be challenging…and not just for students. For teachers, designing homework can be a daunting task with lots of unanswered questions: How much should I assign? What type of content should I cover? Why aren’t students doing the work I assign? Homework can be a powerful opportunity to reinforce the Shifts in your instruction and promote standards-aligned learning, but how do we avoid the pitfalls that make key learning opportunities sources of stress and antipathy?

The nonprofit Instruction Partners recently set out to answer some of these questions, looking at what research says about what works when it comes to homework. You can view their original presentation here , but I’ve summarized some of the key findings you can put to use with your students immediately.

Does homework help?

Consistent homework completion has been shown to increase student achievement rates—but frequency matters. Students who are given homework regularly show greater gains than those who only receive homework sporadically. Researchers hypothesize that this is due to improved study skills and routines practiced through homework that allow students to perform better academically.

Average gains on unit tests for students who completed homework were six percentile points in grades 4–6, 12 percentile points in grades 7–9, and an impressive 24 percentile points in grades 10–12; so yes, homework (done well) does work. [i]

What should homework cover?

While there is little research about exactly what types of homework content lead to the biggest achievement gains, there are some general rules of thumb about how homework should change gradually over time.

In grades 1–5, homework should:

• Reinforce and allow students to practice skills learned in the classroom
• Help students develop good study habits and routines
• Foster positive feelings about school

In grades 6–12, homework should:

• Prepare students for engagement and discussion during the next lesson
• Allow students to apply their skills in new and more challenging ways

The most often-heard criticism of homework assignments is that they simply take too long. So how much homework should you assign in order to see results for students? Not surprisingly, it varies by grade. Assign 10-20 minutes of homework per night total, starting in first grade, and then add 10 minutes for each additional grade. [ii] Doing more can result in student stress, frustration, and disengagement, particularly in the early grades.

Why are some students not doing the homework?

There are any number of reasons why students may not complete homework, from lack of motivation to lack of content knowledge, but one issue to watch out for as a teacher is the impact of economic disparities on the ability to complete homework.

Multiple studies [iii] have shown that low-income students complete homework less often than students who come from wealthier families. This can lead to increased achievement gaps between students. Students from low-income families may face additional challenges when it comes to completing homework such as lack of access to the internet, lack of access to outside tutors or assistance, and additional jobs or family responsibilities.

While you can’t erase these challenges for your students, you can design homework that takes those issues into account by creating homework that can be done offline, independently, and in a reasonable timeframe. With those design principles in mind, you increase the opportunity for all your students to complete and benefit from the homework you assign.

The Big Picture

Perhaps most importantly, students benefit from receiving feedback from you, their teacher, on their assignments. Praise or rewards simply for homework completion have little effect on student achievement, but feedback that helps them improve or reinforces strong performance does. Consider keeping this mini-table handy as you design homework:

The act of assigning homework doesn’t automatically raise student achievement, so be a critical consumer of the homework products that come as part of your curriculum. If they assign too much (or too little!) work or reflect some of these common pitfalls, take action to make assignments that better serve your students.

asia's first porsche design tower to debut in bangkok 

Porsche to build its third design tower in thailand.

German automotive giant Porsche is set to introduce Asia’s first Porsche Design Tower in Bangkok , in partnership with Ananda Development, a leading real estate developer in Thailand. Situated at one of the capital’s most prestigious addresses, the project will feature 22 exclusive duplex and quadplex Sky Villas, ranging from 525 to 1,135 square meters, aimed at redefining luxury living. The Porsche Design Tower Bangkok will be the first of its kind in the continent and the third worldwide, following successful developments in Miami, USA, and Stuttgart, Germany. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with completion expected by the end of 2028.

Porsche Design & Ananda Development Craft Bangkok’s Landmark

The Porsche Design Tower Bangkok, a result of the collaboration between Porsche Design (find more here ) and Ananda Development (find more here ), is set to become a future landmark in the city of Bangkok. The two partners have envisioned a residence that combines cutting-edge architecture with luxurious living spaces, crafted to cater to the passions of its residents.  One of the tower’s most distinctive features is the integration of Passion Spaces, luxury garages designed for residents to house their curated car collections. These personalized spaces serve as private sanctuaries in the heart of the city, doubling as sophisticated venues for social gatherings and versatile backdrops for various pursuits. Central to the building’s design is The Loop, a spiral car ramp that provides direct access to these exclusive garages. The tower’s façade, inspired by the Porsche 911 Targa’s innovative roof mechanism, features a fully automated terrace door system, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living.

The architectural highlights continue with the X-Frame pedestal structure at the building’s entrance, inspired by Porsche’s Mission R concept car, offering a unique and striking entry experience. At the top of the 95-meter-tall, 21-story tower is The Crown, a light signature reminiscent of Porsche’s iconic sports car lighting, adding a distinctive touch to Bangkok’s skyline. Inside, residents will find a blend of exclusive materials, luxurious furniture, and state-of-the-art facilities, including a 25-meter swimming pool, a performance fitness center, a spa, a social lounge, and a business lounge, all contributing to an unparalleled living experience.
