A UNIQUE homework club which provides support to hard-pressed parents has opened in Plassey.

Mayor Jerry O’Dea was on hand to open the 2015 Homework Club, which will operate under the auspices of Limerick’s Gateway to Education organisation.

Based in Wickham Street, this charity offers second-hand books, clothes and learning materials at much discounted prices to parents who might not be able to afford new copies.

The homework club, now in its third year, runs between Tuesday and Thursday, with the organisers charging €5 per pupil for three nights each week.

Charity chief executive Suzanne Roche, who hails from Rosbrien, said she was inspired to open the club when a lady came into her shop who could not read or write, and was concerned her child was not getting the support they needed.

The homework club is now at full capacity.

Mayor O’Dea said: “It is a fantastic facility and I have no doubt that it has helped children in the past three years. Without the volunteers and the buddy system that Suzanne has in place here, I do not think the progression of the programme would be possible.”

For more information, telephone 061-481633.
