Life Is Better Today than in the Past Essay

Introduction, how life in modern times different from that of the past, society then and now.

Although most individuals may argue that the world is at the verge of destruction, because of the increased civil wars, environmental problems such as global warming, and the ever-increasing gap between the rich and the poor, the quality of life in the contemporary society is far much better than it was fifty years ago.

It is very hard to imagine how life was fifty years ago when most products of technology were not present. As compared to historical communities, present societies are more developed, democratic, diverse, and all-inclusive. In addition, people’s health has improved; individuals can interact freely; the transportation system is better, and communication is easy and fast.

Therefore, although every innovation and development cannot lack some form of negative effects, the world is a better place than it was fifty years ago; hence, the need for every individual to appreciate and always struggle to make the world a better place for both present and future generations.

One primary fact that every individual should attest to is that, as compared to fifty ago, nowadays the quality of healthcare is better and more responsive to the ever-changing health condition of the world.

Unlike in the past when diseases such as small pox, measles, pneumonia, and even HIV and AIDS were a threat to the human existence, presently, majority f these diseases can be cured, and for those that cannot be cured there are numerous control measures or vaccines to control their spreading.

This like scenario has been made possible by the increasing research endeavours in the medicine world aimed at making the world a healthy place. As a result of the improved health condition, nowadays individuals can afford to live long and productive life spans with little fears of the likelihoods of a disease arising that will lack a cure.

Although some individuals may argue that some diseases are incurable; hence, to some extent the world is stagnant somewhere in terms of health, it will be so illogical to compare the health status of the world fifty years with the present situation, where even life supporting machines exist.

In addition to an improved quality of health, because of the numerous products of technology such as the computer, numerous aspects of life have improved greatly.

With the internet nowadays individuals can send or receive information from any part of the world within short time spans. Moreover, with numerous products of technology such as the television, presently individuals are always updated with any occurrences and information from any part of the world.

This cannot be compared to fifty years ago when the few radio and cable television sets that were available could only transmit their news within short distances. On the other hand, in the present world there exist numerous modern conveniences that have made life easy.

For example, with the presence of microwaves, fridges, gas burners, washing machines, printers, fax machines, video decoders, and many other office and home electronic gadgets, individuals can perform all the office and home chores easily, faster, and more efficiently.

Another aspect of life that is far much better than it was some fifty years ago is the quality of education. With the internet and other forms of “sophisticated” modes of learning for example, distance education, e-learning, and virtual classrooms, nowadays individuals are able to learn from any geographical positions.

In addition, nowadays societies appreciate the importance of education to the wellbeing of the society, because of the numerous research endeavours aimed at improving the quality of life that are included in most present scientific studies.

As compared to some fifty years ago, the literacy level in most present societies is very high, as most present governments offer free basic education to its citizenry. As a result of this, the level of self-conscious and self-esteem is better in present societies, because more individuals are able to provide for their families using the practical concepts learnt in both formal and informal educational settings.

On the other hand, life in present societies is better, because of the increased respect of every individual’s fundamental civil rights. Most present day governments are democratic and respect the right of its citizenry, something that was rare in most past societies, because of the nature of power that was enjoyed by the ruling class.

Closely related with increased respect of civil rights, is the ever reducing racism and segregation on racial, social class or background basis. Nowadays societies have learnt to appreciate and live in harmony with one another; hence, the nature of peace that is enjoyed by the world and the freedom of movement from a society or country to another.

In conclusion, considering the present condition of the world economically, technologically, socially, and politically, the world of today is a better place to live in as compared to fifty years ago.

This is because modern conveniences and technological innovations have revolutionized how human do everything is done, without which life could be very hard to live. Although people were comfortable with their lifestyles fifty years ago, possibly it is because they had no knowhow any of the modern developments could have made their work better.

Worldwide, people divided on whether life today is better than in the past, current economic conditions a key factor in assessing progress.

Numerous countries found themselves at important crossroads – whether it was military conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors, civil rights and war protests in the U.S., or Soviet tanks crushing Czechoslovakia’s Prague Spring.

How far do people around the globe think they and others like them have come, compared with 50 years ago? Pew Research Center put that question to nearly 43,000 people in 38 countries around the globe this past spring.

At a country level, some of the most positive assessments of progress over the past 50 years are found in Vietnam (88% say life is better today), India (69%) and South Korea (68%) – all societies that have seen dramatic economic transformations since the late 1960s, not to mention the end of armed conflict in the case of Vietnam. A majority in Turkey (65% better) also share a sense of progress over the past five decades. In some of the more developed countries, publics also report that life is better today, including 65% in Japan and Germany, and 64% in the Netherlands and Sweden.

But not everyone is convinced that life today is an improvement over the past. Americans are split on this issue : 41% say life is worse while 37% say better. Meanwhile, half or more in countries ranging from Italy (50%) and Greece (53%) to Nigeria (54%) and Kenya (53%) to Venezuela (72%) and Mexico (68%) say life is worse today.

In general, countries that are more upbeat about their national economy are more likely to say life today is better compared with the past. For example, in Vietnam, where 91% say economic conditions are good, a corresponding 88% say life is better for people like them compared with 50 years ago. And in Venezuela, where only 20% say conditions are good, 10% say life is better for people like them. Overall, the correlation between economic assessments and views of the past is quite strong (+0.68).

These are among the major findings of a Pew Research Center survey conducted among 40,448 respondents in 37 countries from Feb. 16 to May 8, 2017. A separate survey in the U.S. was conducted June 27-July 9, 2017, among 2,505 respondents.

Regional variations in assessments of present vs. past

Latin Americans stand out for their widespread negative assessment of progress over the past half-century. Venezuelans and Mexicans (72% and 68% life is worse) are the most downbeat, but nowhere in the region do more than half say life has improved for people like themselves.

Across the Middle East and North Africa, views of life today compared with 50 years ago vary substantially by country. Turkey reports the most progress in the region, with 65% saying life is better, followed by Israel, where 52% say the same about their country. Tunisians, Jordanians and Lebanese tend to say life has gotten worse for people like them, with Tunisians expressing the most widespread negativity (60%).

In sub-Saharan Africa, comparative assessments of present and past are more evenly divided. A median of 46% say life today is worse than five decades ago, compared with 42% who think life is better. Positive ratings of progress range from 47% “better” in South Africa to 36% in Ghana.

Nigeria and Kenya are the only countries surveyed in the region where more than half say life is worse (54% and 53%, respectively).

Europeans tend to see the past half-century as a period of progress. A regional median of 53% describes life as better today, compared with 30% who take the opposite view. Upbeat assessments are most common in Germany (65% better), the Netherlands (64%), Sweden (64%), Poland (62%) and Spain (60%). Greeks (53% worse) and Italians (50%) are the least convinced that life is better than 50 years ago.

The Asia-Pacific region is home to some of the most favorable assessments of progress. Vietnam (88% better) stands out, but views of life today vs. the past are also quite rosy in India (69%), South Korea (68%) and Japan (65%). Filipinos are the least sanguine about progress, with fewer than half (43%) saying life is better.

In North America, Canadians widely report progress over the past five decades (55%) while fewer Americans (37%) say the same about life in their country. In the U.S., Republicans are more likely to say life is better today , compared with Democrats – an attitudinal shift in the wake of Donald Trump’s election as president in November 2016.

The more educated are more likely to say life is better

The reverse pattern, with less educated more optimistic about life today, is seen in just two countries: Nigeria (by 23 points) and Turkey (9 points).

Age differences also appear in Australia, Sweden, the U.S. and Germany among advanced economies, and in South Africa, Ghana and Peru among emerging economies.

There is a reverse pattern on age in South Korea, where 73% among those 50 and older say life is better now compared with 59% who say this among 18- to 29-year-olds. This pattern is also found in Senegal and Venezuela.

Divisions within countries point to perceived gains and loses

In some countries polled, views about who has gained and lost over the past half-century divide sharply along religious or ethnic lines.

In Nigeria – home to both Muslims and Christians, but now governed by an elected Muslim leader – Muslims are much more enthusiastic about their country’s progress. Nearly three times as many Nigerian Muslims as Christians (62% vs. 22%) say life is better today compared with 50 years ago.

In Israel, 50 years after the Jewish State was victorious in the Six-Day War against a coalition of Arab nations, Israeli Jews are far more convinced than Israeli Arabs that life today is better for people like them. Nearly six-in-ten Jews in Israel say life has improved, compared with only a third of Israeli Arabs who see similar progress.

And in South Africa, there is a sharp racial divide on social progress: Blacks in the country, who a half-century ago were oppressed via the apartheid system, are much more likely to say life is better today for people like them (52%), compared with mixed-race (or “coloured”) and white South Africans (37% and 27%, respectively).

Political divides on life today in Europe

For example, Germans who support the Alternative for Germany party (AfD) are 28 percentage points more likely to say that life is worse off for people like them than those who have an unfavorable view of the anti-immigrant party. This pattern also holds in Sweden among supporters of the Swedish Democrats, in France among those with a favorable view of National Front, in the Netherlands among PVV supporters and in the UK among fans of the UK Independence Party (UKIP).

• For men: Work for men was more widespread, more dangerous, worse paid, and, well, just more annoying . According to the 1920 census, 85 percent of men over 14 were in the labor force, compared with just 69 percent for men over 16 today. It was the dawn of scientific management, with factory workers introduced to a brand new office colleague, the time clock. Manufacturing workers averaged 55 hours at work per week, 10 percent more than self-reported averages today. And the jobs were more dangerous: With a fatality rate of 61 deaths per 100,000 workers, the workplace was about 30 times more dangerous than it is today.
• For women: Women were much less likely to work, and in 1915, many were finding employment at elementary and high schools. The reason for women’s early entry into education in the U.S., however, is a little depressing. School boards preferred female teachers not only because they were seen as more loving, but also because they would do what male principals told them while accepting less than a man’s wage.
• For the elderly: For those who did make it to old age (something of a feat back then), Social Security didn’t exist, and in bad times, poverty among the old was so bad that contemporaries wrote of growing old as if it were a dystopia—the “haunting fear in the winter of life.” In 1938 a writer with the American Association for Old-Age Security said "our modern system of industrial production has rendered our lives insecure to the point of despair.” The industrializing economy was no country for old men or women. As families moved off farms into cities and suburbs, it became harder for some old people to find work in factories, which ran on limber sinews and sweat. In the 40 years before 1920, the share of men over 65 working on farms dropped 39 percent.

Henry Ford introduced the affordable automobile for the everyman in 1908, and it soon dominated the streets. A decade later, about half of the cars the United States were T's, also called "flivvers." The automaker's big news in 1919: It would begin offering electric starters in addition to the standard hand crank.

The World Series was a scam.

Accused of throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, eight members of the Chicago White Sox were later banned from the sport for life.

Alcohol was officially illegal.

Prohibition officially went into effect in 1919 with the passage of the 18th Amendment. The temperance movement cited concerns about the effects of alcohol on political corruption, spousal abuse, and public health , among other consequences. As of 1933 you could (legally) toast to its end.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience .

Living a happy life is a dream of every human being. Most of the ease and cure what we enjoy today was not possible once. That being said, it is agreed that life today is better than what it was about 100 years ago. This will be proven by analyzing, that how a technology has changed the way people connects’, as well as, the advancement in medical science for curing certain disases which was not able to cure before 100 years ago.

Hundred years ago, it was quite difficult to communicate with a person living in other part of the world. For example, if someone had an emergency case and wants to update his friend instantly, then it was an impossible thought. In fact, due to inexistence of any instant communication system, it used to take several months to contact a person living in other country . However, today technology is evolved and various options are there to connect people in a blink of eye. Due to the availiblity of email, instant messaging softwares, and other voice over internet facilities, it is conviniently possible to easily and cheaply communicate with a person living in any country.

Medical sciences on the other hand has also evolved during last hundered years. The advancement in medical science has made it easy to cure certian diseases which was not possible before. For example, tuberculosis, which was once imagined as a deadly disease can now be cured due to the proper availiblity of appropriate medicines. The credit goes to the medical sciences which has made our lives’ more livable than it was a hundred years ago.

To conclude, the advancements in both communication system and health care industry has made vital contribuitions to our lives in order to live a better life today. Given the current trend of high research and development in technology and medical sectors, it is highly foreseeable that human life will be much better in coming decades.

Hi, welcome to the forum! I thought your essay was pretty good, but maybe I would make a minor tweak to your focus. The prompt asks if life is better today. You sort of skipped right over that and discussed why life is better. Maybe its just a matter of saying that people are healthier and live longer and so are happier, and then you can switch to the reason why we live longer. The same thing with your first paragraph - make sure to state that communicating with others makes us happy before jumping to technology. Your writing was pretty clear, but you had a lot of minor grammatical errors and a few phrases and sentences that were not really structured correctly. Overall, I think this would rate about a band 6.

No matter how much we learn about our ancestors as individuals, it’s hard to picture what their lives were like back then. What were their struggles and challenges? What were their daily routines? Was life simpler for them?

Search historical records on MyHeritage

Back in 2016, we posted about some of our favorite items in a list compiled by a theater troupe in Del Tura, Florida, about life in 1915:

• Average life expectancy for men was 47.
• Fuel for cars was only sold in drug stores.
• Only 14 percent of homes had a bathtub.
• Only 8 percent of homes had a telephone.
• The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.
• The average US worker made between $200-$400 each year.
• More than 95 percent of all births took place at home.
• Sugar was 4 cents a pound, eggs were 14 cents a dozen, coffee was 15 cents a pound.
• Most women washed their hair only once a month, using Borax or egg yolks.
• The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30.
• Crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea had not yet been invented.
• There was neither a Mother’s Day nor a Father’s Day.

But even in the 8 years between 1915 and 1923, so much had changed. Here’s a glimpse into life 100 years back from 2023:

Politics and world events

1923 was a tumultuous year on the global stage. In Germany, the Weimar Republic was grappling with severe hyperinflation, causing considerable economic turmoil. This crisis played a role in the eventual rise of the Nazi Party. Meanwhile, the Irish Civil War drew to a close, marking a significant turning point in the country’s history.

Fashion trends

Women’s fashion was dominated by the “flapper” style, characterized by dropped waists and shorter skirts that reached just below the knee. Hairstyles also broke with tradition, as many women sported chic, bobbed cuts. Men usually donned suit jackets with high, starched collars and wide ties — an image of sophistication in the Roaring Twenties.

Technological advances

Radios began appearing in homes as the first commercial models became available. With the establishment of radio broadcast stations a few years earlier, news and entertainment were now transmitted directly into living rooms — a novelty that dramatically altered how people stayed informed and entertained.

Entertainment

The silent film industry was thriving. In fact, the Warner Bros. film studio was founded in 1923, marking the beginning of an entertainment empire. Also debuting that year was the first issue of Time magazine, which would grow to become one of the most influential publications in the world.

1923 was a momentous year for baseball. The New York Yankees clinched their first World Series victory, and the legendary Yankee Stadium opened its doors for the first time — quickly earning the nickname “The House that Ruth Built” in honor of the iconic Babe Ruth.

Automobiles

The Ford Model T was the vehicle of choice for many. Known as the “Tin Lizzie,” this automobile was affordable and reliable. However, by 1923, other car manufacturers, such as General Motors, were introducing competitive models with more features and style options.

Prohibition era

Prohibition was in full swing in the United States in 1923, banning the sale, production, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. This law inadvertently spurred the growth of illegal speakeasies and organized crime, leading to a cultural phenomenon known as the Roaring Twenties.

In the realm of health, the discovery of penicillin was still five years away. In 1923, many bacterial infections remained untreatable, and common causes of death included pneumonia, tuberculosis, and diarrheal diseases.

Economy and cost of living

The Roaring Twenties was a time of economic prosperity. In the United States, post-World War I growth made for a robust economy. However, the average US worker made only between $200–$400 per year. To provide some context, here’s what common items cost:

• Sugar was priced at 4 cents per pound.
• A dozen eggs cost 14 cents.
• A pound of coffee would set you back 15 cents.

I think that the life expectancy figure is probably inaccurate, likely culled from mortality schedules of the time which included deaths of infants and children, who had very high morality rates at the time. In my family with maybe one or two notable exceptions the men all lived into their 80s. One could also ask, if men died so young, why was there such an availability of men of much greater age for the roles of statesmen, writers, poets, and so one? Taft was President then and in his 50s, he was followed by Wilson in his mid 50s as well. Mark Twain died in 1910 in his 70s.

Life 100 Years Ago vs Life Now – What Has Changed?

Every day our world and the way we live changes, and life 100 Years ago vs life now is very different. People used to be different towards one another and towards the elderly. Money and life had a different meaning. But, over time these things have changed due to society, technology and the way we act, think and feel in general.

How has technology changed in the last 100 years? Our generation lives in a fast-paced, technologically progressive society. Life today vs 100 years ago is much more advanced. The early 1900s were a fascinating time of primitive automobiles. The major invention at that time was the first toggle light switch. The major tech invention of today is CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technology. This use of technology in agriculture is changing farming now from old farming methods. It enables us to reprogram life as we know it. We are also making strides in artificial intelligence, robotics, sensors, and networks. As well as advancements in synthetic biology, materials science, space exploration and more!

Life 100 Years ago vs life now was different when it comes to love and relationships too!

Dating in the past vs now has evolved quite a bit. Thanks to the Internet. New generation relationships often start via online dating. People also commonly live together without getting marriage. One of the biggest differences in dating then and now is our openness about it. We are no longer so conservative about our love lives, and sex lives. As a result, infidelity and casual relationships are quite common these days. Regardless of these thought-provoking facts, there are simple habits that will make you more attractive and get people to like you . If you are interested in actual dating, that is!

There’s also a big difference between education now and in the past. Nowadays graduating high school is more of an expectation, rather than a privilege. But, education 100 years ago was not the same. Only about 10 percent of high school students actually graduated. Yet, classrooms 100 years ago looked much like classrooms now. There are still chalkboards and chalks, but classrooms today are also filled with computers. Students also have access to online learning and are able to earn degrees from home.

How has healthcare changed in the past 100 years?

Marijuana, morphine, and heroin were sold over the counter. Now, marijuana has been legalized (or about to become) in the recent past. But, morphine and heroin without a physician’s prescription are illegal. Hospital stays used to be lengthy. Along with severe blind spots in prevention and a lack of patient respect. Today, the length of hospital stays for recovery from procedures has declined substantially. Due to technological advances. Hospital births are common and pretty much expected. But, back then over 95 percent of childbirths occurred at home.

People didn’t make too much of a big deal about personal hygiene either. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. While most women only washed their hair once a month using Borax or egg yolks as their shampoo. In comparison, life 100 years ago vs life now are polar opposites, as far as personal hygiene is concerned. Our obsession with hygiene and personal care is undeniable. We shower daily, brush our teeth twice a day, we remove unwanted hair. We put on makeup, and wouldn’t dare to leave the house without deodorant and perfume. And more than likely, we overestimate our hand sanitizer effectiveness. Instead of trusting our own body’s defense system. There are so many amazing facts about the human body most of us still don’t even know about!

How else was life 100 years ago vs life now different?

Well, it’s also worth mentioning that women have made a lot of progress towards equality. Life of a woman 100 years ago was very different. But, one thing women one hundred years ago and women today have in common is the need for independence. Let’s look at women’s roles in society then and now. In the early 1900s, women wanted to be seen as more than mothers and wives. Today they are still working towards equality in the workplace. And advocating for higher education! After being seen as the weaker sex, during the World War, women had to step up to fill men’s vacant jobs. Of course, they were expected to return to their domestic roles when the men returned from war. But the cause was already underway. Today, women are just as career-driven as their male counterparts and have just as many opinions to voice about society.

A hundred years ago money was important, but it wasn’t the cornerstone of everyone’s life!

You could get a handle full of candy for a penny, and now you have to pay a couple of dollars just for a candy bar. In the past, people stored basic items and had more access to fresh foods and raw materials. Which is not the case today! Profits made on things are skyrocketing. Whilst big companies are keeping people dependent on manufactured products more than ever. Inflation has also been taking its toll on our society.

Entertainment in the 1910s was important. People loved music and dancing! Marking the era of Early Jazz, also known as Dixieland Jazz (from 1900 to 1928). Going to the theater, opera and to the circus was very popular back in the day. People also loved sports in the early 1900s. Especially tennis, golfing, football and soccer. Today we play video games, we get to enjoy virtual reality and online video chat. We can go skydiving, paragliding and bungee jumping; Go to bars, nightclubs, music festivals, and casinos, and we get to travel the world; Keep in touch with friends and family on Social Media; Have entertainment and information available at our fingertips; Read e-books and magazines on our tablets; Binge-watch movies and our favourite shows on Netflix. Plus, we get to entertain each other on platforms like YouTube! Not to mention having access to online shopping around the clock.

Life 100 Years ago vs life now has changed due to technology, the Internet, and health care. Revolutionizing human civilization. Indeed, the difference between lifestyle now and 100 years ago is remarkable. Though certain life lessons have remained the same, and they are worth remembering. No matter what the next 100 years may bring!

We cannot deny that technology helps our communication become easier. In stead of sending letter to keep in touch with others, we can connect to someone in other countries or even countries around the world through Zalo, Gmail, Facebook and so on. This method is not only quick but also money-saving .Moreover, these technologies can be used for entertainment as reading news,watching youtube and playing games. In addition, the mode of transportation has modernized than before . In the last 100 years, people often travelled to somewhere on foot, by bike or they rode house ,but these day the masses prefer to use bus ,motorbike or car because they are the fastest and time saving. Thanks to appearance of modern transportation, travelling become easier and more convenient. In conclusion, it is clear that our life become better and better day by day. The quality of life has improved effectively.The advancement medical science, development in technology and appearance of modern code of transportation are the main feature which create distinction between at these days and 100 years ago.

From 1909, the world population soared from 1. 7 to 6. 4 billion people. Also the average life expectancy was only 47 years back then! There used to be a minimal amount of cars in the streets, people probably used to walk more often and just 8000 automobiles in the United States could be found there with only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit was 10 mph.

Even though the air didn’t use to be so polluted by cars and other vehicles 100 years ago, I think that now, it is much more easier and faster to get where we need as we have invented airplanes etc. ut then again we have to deal with traffic and mentioned problems coming with polluted environment. Looking at how working has developed throughout the years, we can see a ch

ange that had a huge influence on our lives. In those times before, it was often the case that children had to work, so that the family would have enough money. Also electronics and similar fields of sciences didn’t exist, people used to work in agriculture and farming used to be their biggest source of income. But time back then wasn’t only about work.

People knew how to use their free time like we do today. Although they didn’t use to go to cinemas or amusement parks with high technology, they used to enjoy visiting theatres or various social events such as balls etc. People that couldn’t afford seeing plays in theatres probably used to spent time with their families at homes. When I think about changes in education between now and then, I think that ther

is a drastic change. Before e. g. 90% of all doctors had no college education and two out of every 10 adults couldn’t read or write.

Now we have many types of schools focused of different fields of jobs and people can choose which university they want to go to. Also the government pays for the students each year. This brings me to the idea whether political systems and politicians have changed. There used to be many wars that affected the whole world such as the World Wars but there are still some conflicts between countries which result in miscellaneous attacks on people. That is probably what hasn’t changed.

But on the other hand, we have relatively stable political systems (where there used to be kings or dictators, presidents or other heads of state are). Another thing we could look at is food and drinks as all people need to eat and always will. I don’t think that this has changed much over the century, but certainly with higher and new technologies, we can prepare meals in healthier ways etc. However, alcohol is probably much more used now than before. Also because of that new technology, we now have e. g. microwaves, electric ovens etc. while e. g. bubble gum, toasters nor even milk cartons used to exist 100 years ago.

For centuries, people have been clamoring to glimpse solar eclipses. From astronomers with custom-built photographic equipment to groups huddled together with special glasses, this spectacle has captivated the human imagination.

Creating a Permanent Record

In 1860, Warren de la Rue captured what many sources describe as the first photograph of a total solar eclipse . He took it in Rivabellosa, Spain, with an instrument known as the Kew Photoheliograph . This combination of a telescope and camera was specifically built to photograph the sun.

Forty years later, Nevil Maskelyne, a magician and an astronomy enthusiast, filmed a total solar eclipse in North Carolina. The footage was lost, however, and only released in 2019 after it was rediscovered in the Royal Astronomical Society’s archives.

For scientists and astronomers, eclipses provide an opportunity not only to view the moon’s umbra and gaze at the sun’s corona, but also to make observations that further their studies. Many observatories, or friendly neighbors with a telescope, also make their instruments available to the public during eclipses.

Women from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and their professor tested out equipment ahead of their eclipse trip (to “catch old Sol in the act,” as the original New York Times article phrased it) to New London, Conn., in 1922.

A group from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania traveled to Yerbaniz, Mexico, in 1923, with telescopes and a 65-foot camera to observe the sun’s corona .

Dr. J.J. Nassau, director of the Warner and Swasey Observatory at Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, prepared to head to Douglas Hill, Maine, to study an eclipse in 1932. An entire freight car was required to transport the institution’s equipment.

Indirect Light

If you see people on Monday sprinting to your local park clutching pieces of paper, or with a cardboard box of their head, they are probably planning to reflect or project images of the solar eclipse onto a surface.

Cynthia Goulakos demonstrated a safe way to view a solar eclipse , with two pieces of cardboard to create a reflection of the shadowed sun, in Lowell, Mass., in 1970.

Another popular option is to create a pinhole camera. This woman did so in Central Park in 1963 by using a paper cup with a small hole in the bottom and a twin-lens reflex camera.

Amateur astronomers viewed a partial eclipse, projected from a telescope onto a screen, from atop the Empire State Building in 1967 .

Back in Central Park, in 1970, Irving Schwartz and his wife reflected an eclipse onto a piece of paper by holding binoculars on the edge of a garbage basket.

Children in Denver in 1979 used cardboard viewing boxes and pieces of paper with small pinholes to view projections of a partial eclipse.

Staring at the Sun (or, How Not to Burn Your Retinas)

Eclipse-gazers have used different methods to protect their eyes throughout the years, some safer than others .

In 1927, women gathered at a window in a building in London to watch a total eclipse through smoked glass. This was popularized in France in the 1700s , but fell out of favor when physicians began writing papers on children whose vision was damaged.

Another trend was to use a strip of exposed photographic film, as seen below in Sydney, Australia, in 1948 and in Turkana, Kenya, in 1963. This method, which was even suggested by The Times in 1979 , has since been declared unsafe.

Solar eclipse glasses are a popular and safe way to view the event ( if you use models compliant with international safety standards ). Over the years there have been various styles, including these large hand-held options found in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1979.

Parents and children watched a partial eclipse through their eclipse glasses in Tokyo in 1981.

Slimmer, more colorful options were used in Nabusimake, Colombia, in 1998.

In France in 1999.

And in Iran and England in 1999.

And the best way to see the eclipse? With family and friends at a watch party, like this one in Isalo National Park in Madagascar in 2001.
