Distance learning
We offer an exceptional range of flexible and accessible career and life changing learning opportunities. We have been teaching students by distance learning for more than 20 years, providing internationally-recognised academic qualifications including certificates, diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and PhDs. This means that you don't need to leave your job to study or relocate. You can study from anywhere in the world, and at a pace that will fit in with your other commitments. It is possible to switch between distance learning and campus-based study. Our programmes can help you to change careers , enhance your existing career, or help you to pursue your passion for the past whatever your age and experience.
All of our courses are of exactly the same academic quality and standard as our campus programmes, and you will graduate with a University of Leicester qualification. Our distance programmes are written and taught by academic staff with specialisms in the subject area, and all our teaching is informed by our own original research. Fees are considerably less than for our campus programmes.

PhD by Distance
The PhD by Distance programme allows students who are unable to commit to basing themselves in Edinburgh to study for a PhD in a field of History, Classics or Archaeology from their home country or city.
What's involved?
The PhD by Distance mode is available to all applicants for eligible HCA PhD programmes, who will apply via the Postgraduate Degree Finder . Applicants will select between on-campus and distance options, as well as between part-time and full-time options.
PhD by Distance students will receive the same level of support and supervision as on-campus students. The frequency with which students will meet with their supervisors, and method of communication for supervision sessions, will be provisionally agreed at the point of application and confirmed during induction.
Please be aware that some funding bodies do not permit students to study by distance, for example both ESRC and AHRC regulations currently state that students must be residents at the Institution where they are studying.
Entry requirements
The entry requirements for the PhD by Distance are the same as for the School’s on-campus PhD programmes.
In addition, applicants to the PhD by Distance will also be required to complete a PhD by Distance Applicant Admission Form. This form must be emailed to the Postgraduate Research Office ( [email protected] ) who will upload this to your application on your behalf.
Applicants should provide information about previous experience of distance study together with a statement detailing the potential risks and characteristics of distance learning. It is important that student’s applying for this mode of study recognise its particular challenges. While experience of studying at a distance is desirable in applying for the programme, this is not a specific requirement for admission. All of this should be discussed with the potential supervisor(s) prior to application and can be reflected on further during the admissions interview.
Applicants should also use this additional application form to provide details of the access they will have to research facilities at the normal site of study and where the core datasets that they will rely on are located.
Working whilst studying
The School understands that many students will take on paid work alongside their studies. The University’s guidance for full-time PhD students is that they should work no more than an average of 9 hours per week for across the academic year, to ensure they have time for their studies. While there are no specific rules about how many hours part-time students can work, the School recommends that part-time students allocate at least two to three days a week, on average across the year, to their PhD research. You should discuss any working patterns that you have with your proposed supervisor and reflect on the time you are devoting to your studies throughout your programme, particularly if you are struggling to make sufficient progress; this might well be a topic for discussion at annual reviews. Please note that if you need to apply for an extension at the end of your programme, you cannot use the fact that you had a job alongside your studies as a justification for this – an extension request can only be based on unforeseen circumstances. If you need to take on more work for a temporary period of time and this will impact on your studies, you should consider an Authorised Interruption of Studies.

Programme details
Programme description.
PhD Archaeology will see you undertake substantial original research leading to a thesis that constitutes a genuine contribution to archaeological knowledge. You can undertake your PhD as either a full-time or part-time programme.
Archaeology students often undertake some form of fieldwork as part of their PhD. This could be a small-scale excavation, survey, rock art recording, or work with museum collections and archives.
You may also carry out qualitative social research in the realm of heritage studies (e.g. conducting qualitative interviews or participant observation). Archaeology research at Manchester is characterised by a number of themes, which give a distinctive flavour to our research and teaching. These include the study of:
- history, theory and practice of Archaeology;
- the archaeology of cultural identity;
- landscape, monuments and architecture;
- technology and society;
- death and the body
- archaeological heritage and the contemporary significance of the past.
Our doctoral students are part of a thriving disciplinary research culture with regular research seminars.
Many of our students undertake some undergraduate teaching following appropriate training.

Teaching and learning
The PhD programme is based on supervised independent research. The student-supervisor relationship thus sits at the heart of this programme.
Doctoral supervision is on a one-to-one basis, with meetings usually fortnightly in the first year.
Each student has a main supervisor, a co-supervisor and an additional panel member who acts as an independent reviewer. The Department's Postgraduate Research Officer provides more general academic advice and support.
In addition to regular personal supervision, our graduate research students each have a research panel which meets a minimum of two times per year (on more occasions if necessary).
The research panel increases the breadth of expertise available to the student and widens the informational and networking opportunities accessible to them.
In addition the panel reviews the development of the student's research proposal, provides feedback on draft chapters and conference papers, discusses research progress, and provides guidance on the formulation of realistic objectives.
Training opportunities
During the course of your programme, research postgraduates need to develop both broad generic research skills and specialised skills relevant to your specific discipline and field study.
Some of these skills will be acquired as part of our skills training, as well as a range of courses available across the University.
artsmethods@manchester is a programme of talks, workshops and events running throughout the academic year, which explores approaches to arts research, research methods and the dissemination of arts and languages research at Manchester.
Archaeology students, especially those working on heritage research projects, also find the equivalent programme of workshops and training sessions offered by the School of Social Sciences useful.
Some training in archaeological approaches and techniques is provided through the AHRC Northwest Doctoral Consortium.
Additional bespoke training specific to the needs of individual projects is provided by PhD supervisory teams with the support of the Department's Laboratory Technician.

Anthropology and Archaeology
PhD, MPhil Anthropology and Archaeology
The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology has an international 'four-field' approach, combining archaeology with evolutionary, social and linguistic anthropology. Our key strengths lie in our integrated approaches to understanding cultural, biological and social diversity and change. We focus particularly on adaptation, adversity and globalisation. Our research themes include 'Ecologies', 'Liveable Futures', 'Transitions and Turbulence', and 'Connections and Creativity'.
Our research spans from earliest prehistory to the modern day. Field research takes place in the UK, as well as Bhutan, Brazil, China, Colombia, Dominica, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, Venezuela, and elsewhere.
We are well equipped to undertake anthropological and archaeological fieldwork, including excavation, and we have world-class radiocarbon dating and organic residue analysis laboratories on site. We foster partnerships with professional institutions nationally and locally to provide additional collaborative opportunities for our students (for example, with the Royal Anthropological Institute Ethnographic Film Festival, UNESCO City of Film, and Bristol Museum and Art Gallery).
In addition, we draw on expertise and facilities from across the University (such as the Brigstow Institute ; Cabot Institute for the Environment ; Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research ; Jean Golding Institute ). We also work closely with institutes and centres in the Faculties of Social Sciences and Law ( Migration Mobilities Bristol ; the Centre for Environmental Humanities ; and the Centre for Health, Humanities and Science ), as well as the Faculty of Science ( Bristol Isotope Group ; Organic Geochemistry Unit ).
Programme structure
MPhil: a standalone, one-year (full-time) research degree. Students will undertake their own research project, concluding in the submission of a 25,000-word dissertation. Students may have the option to audit units from our taught master's programmes if they are relevant to their research.

Meet our supervisors
The following list shows potential supervisors for this programme. Visit their profiles for details of their research and expertise.
Research groups
Ecologies: Our research coalesces around critical issues of the human relationship with the environment and our long-term planetary futures. Our research on ecologies ranges broadly in time, with projects on human evolutionary pasts including the origin of sociality in primates, adaptation and extinction in apes, prehistorical changes in human societies and the evolution of cultural traits, and subsistence and dietary changes over millennia. We also focus on contemporary societies and how people respond to and live in the shadow of climate disasters. Research ranges broadly in terms of region, with projects in East Africa on fungi and food security and human behavioural ecology in relation to reproductive health; in South America on children and their relationship to both forest and urban environments in Peru and resource extraction and environmental destruction in Amazonia; in Asia exploring how people navigate and adapt to an international landscape of borders; and in the Pacific and Europe on the cultural uses of plants. We also bring this theme home to the southwest of England with archaeologies of changing landscapes and landscape usage from Prehistory to the present day.
Liveable Futures: What is needed for life to be sustained? What conditions must be in place if we are to occupy a world that is habitable, and a society that enables human and non-human life to flourish? What challenges must we overcome to realise this vision of a hopeful and thriving future? Asking and answering such questions has always been at the heart of human experience, but we live at a moment where they are being posed anew in light of unprecedented contingencies and opportunities. Ecological emergencies. Faltering confidence in liberal democracy. Ever-accelerating technological transformations. These encounters shift our perceptions on what the future holds, as they provoke a collective "soul searching" on what it means to secure a liveable future for humanity, and even for life as such. Our research into Liveable Futures demonstrates how an anthropological perspective can contribute to and reshape this conversation.
Turbulence and Transition: Whether affected by disease, drugs, changing diets, migrations, trauma, extractive practices, hurricanes, political shifts, or conflict we are interested in how humans live through and make sense of world altering events and everyday lived experiences. Our work is concerned with keeping pace with global changes – actively reflecting on, and reshaping anthropology and archaeology's approaches to, and impacts on our changing world. Our research projects track the challenges faced by human beings past and present, exploring how lives and material cultures are impacted by technological, social, and environmental change. Our research projects explore themes such as survival and resilience in the Caribbean in the face of destructive storms; the impacts of anarchy, civil war and rebellion in the southwest of medieval Britain; educational and linguistic transitions amongst ethnic groups in contemporary China; and how we can best support the survivors of sexual abuse.
Connections & Creativity: Here we explore the possibilities for new forms of discovery and methodological engagement with past and contemporary societies. We are initiating, creating, and caretaking large-scale datasets that drive new forms of understanding, interpretation, and integration. We also have a growing expertise in multi-modal anthropological approaches and the deployment of visual and creative methods of engagement and cultural production. Our expertise foregrounds opportunities for collaboration, co-production and participatory methods, placing our department at the heart of contemporary issues.

The main requirement for a PhD online through distance learning is to present and discuss a thesis of at least 100 pages for review and evaluation by an academic committee at Selinus University. A thesis for this research program must explore human societies of the past using their material remains and must implement the development of archaeology as a scientific discipline. Archaeological methods and theories should be explained using case studies from the continents of Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas. The dissertation should include the latest developments in this field and present theories and practices found in scientific reality concerning the latest archaeological discoveries.
