CC1 Chap 5 Vocab

TermDefinition
area the number of square units needed to fill up a region on a flat surface
base surface a solid object stands on, or the bottom line of a shape such as a triangle or rectangle
dimensions flat region or space tell how far that the figure extends in each direction
generic rectangle A type of diagram used to visualize multiplying expressions without algebra tiles
height how tall an object is
mixed numbers A number that consists of an integer and a fraction.
parallel Two or more straight lines on a flat surface that do not intersect
perpendicular Two rays, line segments, or lines that meet (intersect) to form a right angle (90º)
product The result of multiplying.
quadrilateral A polygon with four sides
ratio compares two quantities by division
triangle a polygon with 3 sides
trapezoid A quadrilateral with at least one pair of parallel sides

Choose any strategy to find the area of each shape below. Use the information in the Math Notes boxes for help. Assume that the shape in part (a) is a parallelogram and that the shape in part (b) is a trapezoid.   

A parallelogram, slanted right, with bottom side labeled, 4 in.  A right triangle is created by a dashed line segment of 5 in, drawn from the top left vertex, to the bottom side, at a 90 degree angle to the bottom.

Form a rectangle using the left portion of the parallelogram. Then find the area of the rectangle.

When the trapezoid is copied and rotated, a parallelogram can be formed.

Form a parallelogram using the rotated trapezoid.

Now find the area of the parallelogram.

Use this area to find the area of the original trapezoid.
